En los domicilios de los solicitantes se vienen produciendo con mucha frecuencia problemas con los equipos por la antigüedad de los mismos, adquiridos en el año 2008. están muy deteriorados, no duran las baterías, se producen perdidas de la conexión durante las entrevistas de valoración y habitualmente se solicita apoyo técnico por su mal funcionamiento y por las repetidas averías que se están originando por su uso continuado. Los teléfonos móviles corporativos también están muy deteriorados.
Estos son los dos primeros párrafos de la carta que José Luis Prieto Rivera, subdirector general de Gestión y Tramitación del Procedimiento de Dependencia, envió el pasado 18 de febrero a sus superiores y al Área de Gestión y Aplicaciones Informáticas de la Comunidad de Madrid. La situación es insostenible, explican los valoradores, que aseguran que incluso tienen que sustituir las teclas de sus ordenadores por mal estado.

Por todo lo expuesto, resulta imprescindible la pronta renovación de todos los equipos de los valoradores de dependencia adscritos a la Subdirección General de Gestión y Tramitación del Procedimiento de Dependencia de la Dirección General de Atención a la Dependencia y al Mayor: 70 ordenadores portátiles y 70 teléfonos móviles que deberían incluir necesariamente GPS. Le ruego me indique el calendario previsto para la renovación de los equipos propuestos, concluye su misiva Prieto Rivera.

Actualmente la Comunidad de Madrid que preside Cristina Cifuentes tiene una plantilla de 60 valoradores. En la comunidad de Madrid hay 130.000 beneficiarios dentro de sistema de dependencia.

¡Cabe en tu regazo, en tu pupitre, en tu mesa de trabajo! A finales de los cincuenta, que unas piernas soportaran un portátil era toda una revolución. Por eso, el anuncio de lanzamiento del Donner 3500 mostraba las de un ejecutivo con aquella máquina sobre ellas y acompañaba la instantánea con entusiastas mensajes. Este es el único ordenador que puedes llevar contigo, aseguraba rotundamente el reclamo publicitario.

Donner 3500 no era el primer ordenador concebido para ser transportado de un lugar a otro. Desde principios de los cincuenta, el Ejército estadounidense se propuso que las máquinas pudieran desplazarse al campo de batalla. La compañía Sylvania cumplió aquel sueño en 1954, si bien ningún humano podría haber cargado con aquel aparato. MOBIDIC ocupaba un remolque de nueve metros de largo y pesaba casi 5.500 kilos.

Cuatro años más tarde nacía RECOMP, un ordenador científico digital que, según la publicidad de la época, podía viajar a cualquier parte. Teniendo en cuenta que pesaba 90 kilos, en la práctica parecía imposible que aquel aparato que utilizaba transistores fuera un aventurero: se necesitaban dos personas para transportarlo.

Cuando la compañía Donner Scientific publicó aquel anuncio en 1959, no le faltaban motivos para presumir de que su computadora portátil sólo pesara 10 kilos. Eso sí, había truco. El dispositivo no utilizaba unos y ceros para realizar sus operaciones lógicas. El ordenador analógico más pequeño que jamás se había hecho formaba parte de la lista de máquinas que, por culpa de los chips, acabaron quedando en el olvido.

En 1953, nacía en Berkeley (California) la compañía Donner Scientific, especializada en la fabricación de ordenadores analógicos. El ingeniero jefe era Jerry Collings, un texano que fue capaz de reducir considerablemente aquel portátil analógico.

Mejorar el diseño y los métodos de empaque hizo que el 3500 fuera una última generación atractiva... Componentes pasivos de precisión, amplificadores operacionales, multiplicadores y generadores de funciones fueron el secreto de su precisión y su rendimiento. Así explicaba Collings la receta con la que logró mejorar aquella máquina que funcionaba gracias a válvulas de vacío, según recoge el periodista Evan Koblentz en su revelador libro Del ábaco al 'smartphone': la evolución de los ordenadores móviles y portátiles.

El aparato servía para realizar ciertos cálculos: era capaz de resolver ecuaciones diferenciales de quinto grado. Su manual de instrucciones advertía que debía calentarse durante al menos diez minutos antes de comenzar a utilizarse. También aconsejaba una revisión diaria, o semanal, de las tensiones de salida de la fuente de alimentación.
Tampoco era precisamente fácil de usar. Si alguien quería resolver una ecuación, tenía que programar el ordenador mediante cables de conexión. Una laboriosa tarea que debería hacernos apreciar más nuestro moderno 'touchpad'.Hasta ahora, el ingeniero, el profesor, o el científico que necesitaba un ordenador analógico en su trabajo se enfrentaba a una situación difícil, rezaba el panfleto publicitario. Donner 3500 pretendía que esos profesionales tuvieran un portátil en su lugar de trabajo por un precio que oscilaba entre los 1.200 dólares de la época (unos 8.600 euros actuales) y los 1.800 dólares (13.000 euros).

Jerry Collings nunca previó que los ordenadores digitales llegarían a ser pequeños y populares. Uno de los padres de las computadoras digitales tampoco parecía creer en aquel momento que los portátiles no fueran a ser analógicos.

John Mauchly, un físico apasionado de la meteorología, se dio cuenta en los años treinta de que necesitaba una máquina para realizar cálculos en poco tiempo. En 1946, veía la luz ENIAC (Computador e Integrador Numérico Electrónico), el primer ordenador digital electrónico de propósito general que Mauchly diseñó junto al ingeniero eléctrico J. Presper Eckert.

Aquella máquina utilizada por el Laboratorio de Investigación Balística del Ejército de Estados Unidos, precursora de nuestros actuales ordenadores, no era precisamente pequeña. Sus 18.000 válvulas de vacío ocupaban 167 metros cuadrados en la Universidad de Pensilvania.



Mauchly también desarrollaría UNIVAC I, la primera computadora comercial especializada en los negocios. La máquina también ocupaba una habitación, aunque era tan avispada que supo predecir incluso que Eisenhower ganaría las elecciones presidenciales de Estados Unidos en 1952.

Pero Mauchly dio un giro a su carrera poco antes de que comenzara la era de IBM y los siete enanitos, la expresión con la que se aludía en los sesenta al gigante de la informática y a las otras empresas de menor tamaño que se repartían el resto del mercado (entre ellas Remington Rand, fabricante de UNIVAC).

Fundó una empresa de consultoría tecnológica, Mauchly Associates, el mismo año en el que se publicó aquel anuncio del Donner 3500. Comenzó a planear entonces la creación de su propio portátil analógico, que cualquier hombre sentado en su despacho pudiera utilizar para calcular automáticamente la planificación de un proyecto. Lo llamó SkeduFlo.

En 1962, ya se había creado un primer prototipo del modelo MCX-30 que iba a salir al mercado por la friolera de unos 10.000 dólares (casi 70.000 euros al cambio actual). Le seguiría un nuevo modelo de dimensiones más reducidas, que cabría en un maletín lo suficientemente pequeño para llevarlo como equipaje en un avión.

Mauchly debió generar unas expectativas todavía mayores cuando anunció el SkeduFlo en 1962. Popular Mechanics afirmó que los hombres de negocios podrían pronto llevar ordenadores en sus bolsillos, según las predicciones de este pionero.

Mientras, Time señalaba que Mauchly imaginaba un ordenador en miniatura para uso doméstico que hará no sólo que las listas de la compra queden obsoletas sino que marcará la extinción del vendedor o el dependiente de la caja registradora. Según la prestigiosa revista, las mujeres llevarían su ordenador en el monedero. Evidentemente, era imposible desarrollar un 'smartphone' de esas características en la época. Pero los SkeduFlo, que no iban a ser precisamente de bolsillo, no llegaron a venderse. No superaron la fase de pruebas debido a su mediocre rendimiento.

Ni el Donner 3500 ni el fallido SkeduFlo llegaron a triunfar. El primer portátil de éxito comercial de la historia aparecería dos décadas más tarde. El Osborne 1, un ordenador digital con una memoria de 60 kilobytes, que comenzó a venderse en 1981.

Aunque pesaba casi lo mismo que el portátil analógico más pequeño de la historia, aquel maletín era más asequible (1.800 dólares, unos 4.100 euros actuales) y albergaba un ordenador con pantalla en el que ejecutivos o periodistas ya podían escribir con relativa comodidad. Así que casi nadie volvió a acordarse de aquel aparato de Donner Scientific que se podía tener en el regazo mientras resolvía ecuaciones. Un pionero que desapareció de la memoria colectiva.

Amigos de Edward Snowden y activistas del software libre han ayudado a crearlo y ahora una respetada hacker polaca se une al equipo, aportando el sistema operativo perfecto para esta máquina.

anna Rutkowska se dio a conocer mundialmente en 2006, cuando demostró que era posible atacar el sistema operativo Windows con una inteligente técnica que bautizó como Pastilla azul. La hacker polaca no fue flor de un día y siguió con sus valientes investigaciones, que le han reportado el respeto de la comunidad hacker mundial. Rutkowska es hoy una de las pocas mujeres que cuentan en este selecto grupo.

En 2007 fundó su propia empresa, Invisible Things Lab. Y en 2010, junto con un amigo, empezó a trabajar en un nuevo sistema operativo al que llamaron Qubes OS, de código libre y basado en la distribución de Linux, Fedora. Como no podía ser de otra forma, su intención era crear un sistema lo más seguro posible, basado en la premisa de que el ordenador está continuamente bajo ataque.

Here’s the iBall Compbook Exelance that’s powered by the latest Atom chip and costs only Rs 9,999. Is that a deal or what?Of course, the first question that crossed our mind on seeing the device was why iBall chose to call it “Excelance” and not “Excellence.” I’m sure they had their reasons. But I still can’t think of any that might be reasonable.It’s made of plastic; textured plastic on the top and matte-finished plastic everywhere else. There’s plenty of flex, the keyboard unit can depress inwards when typing and the charger feels flimsy and cheap. It’s also heavier than you’d expect.Again, this laptop costs Rs 9,999 and at that price, I’m actually impressed that they managed to build a fully functional laptop.Despite the flexing, the laptop doesn’t seem like one that will fall apart any time soon and in the one month that I used it, it held up rather well.

Chances are that we'll see an announcement in October 2016 - which could include a Surface Book 2 - but others are saying that the launch could be in Spring 2017. The reason for that is due to more rumours that Microsoft is delaying the second part of the big Windows 10 update until early next year. This update is known as Redstone - or RS2 because it's the second part of it - and Microsoft is supposedly hanging on until the new Surface devices are ready so it can showcase the software features on them.
While October this year is the next period with a good possibility, it perfectly feasible that Microsoft could wait until 2017, with some touting March. As well as Redstone, it would give the firm more time to get the product ready (the Pro 4 launched with a number of issues including battery drain) and ensure the device comes with Intel Kaby Lake processors which are coming later this year.

This is all backed up by a report by Kitguru which says the Surface Pro 5 will arrive in early 2017 mainly due to the Kaby Lake processor.

It's slightly tenuous but Microsoft ending production of the Surface 3 by the end of 2016, via ZDNet, means it would create space for a new model - potentially before the end of the year. This could simply be the Surface 4 but we could also see the Surface Pro 5, too as Microsoft would likely launch them together.

One other option for a Surface Pro 5 announcement cum launch is 2 August which is the release date for the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, although this is probably unlikely.

Although it's early days, there are a few rumours circulating. One is that the Surface Pen - the stylus bundled with Surface Pro tablets - will be updated so that it contains a rechargeable battery that charges wirelessly when magnetically attached to the tablet. The current Surface Pen attaches magnetically but is not rechargeable as it takes an alkaline AAAA battery:

Opera claim it is the first major browser to offer the “dedicated power-saving mode” which is activated by a simple click of the mouse when the battery cable on your laptop is unplugged.The power savings are made through a number of browser optimisations, including reducing activity in background tabs, that allow laptop users extra hours when they are on the move or without a power cable.After conducting tests Opera says the power savings have been made “without compromising the speed and functionality you expect”.Initial testing was done to reflect how people normally use their browsers and results showed the Opera system could last 50% longer than other browsers such as Google Chrome, when running Windows 10, 64-bit.Style Covers ($20-$25): these are cosmetic backs and they'll be available in six designs at launch; Washed Oak, Charcoal Ash, Silver Oak, Black Leather, Black Herringbone and Red Nylon. More will be added in the future. They're sturdy, yet slim. Though they slightly thicken the phones, they do remove the camera hump and protect the many data pins on the back. I do like the look of the naked phones, but our black models show so many fingerprints so quickly, that I'd rather cover it.

- The InstaShare Projector ($299.99) has a built-in stand and a secondary 1100 mAh battery. This is a 50 lumen DLP projector (400:1 contrast ratio) that can project up to 70" images and it has keystone and brightness adjustments. For those unfamiliar with projector specs, this isn't a very bright or high contrast projector, so you'll use it in dark rooms to maximize viewability and contrast.- The JBL SoundBoost ($79.99) makes the phone as loud and full sounding as a laptop...a laptop with better than average audio. The Mod has stereo 3 watt speakers (6 watts total) with a claimed 80db loudness. It also has a 1000 mAh secondary battery and a built-in kickstand.

- Incipio OffGrid power back. A not too thick 2200 mAh battery that augments battery life. It's likely most appealing to those who go with the Moto Z rather than Z Force, since the basic Z has the smaller battery. There are other battery backs coming with some serious style from Kate Spade and Tumi priced from $60 to $90.There are more Moto Mods under development, and third parties can develop Mods with the help of Moto's dev kit. Mods must be certified by Motorola, which is likely a good thing so you won't have to worry about poorly designed Mods that might disrupt the phone's functions. Motorola says that the Moto Mods platform will be supported by future Moto Z phones, so they'll likely find new life if you upgrade to next year's Z phone.

Whether you choose the Moto Z or Moto Z Force you'll get the same bright and colorful AMOLED 5.5" display with QHD 2560 x 1440 resolution for a high 535 PPI pixel density. These are truly lovely displays, and the Moto ShatterShield on the Z Force Droid Edition doesn't reduce image quality despite a complex 5 layer design. Colors are saturated and blacks are inky, which is typical of AMOLED, but they're a bit more natural than the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. If you like Samsung AMOLED displays, you'll probably like these Moto displays. If you found those Galaxy displays attractive but a bit too saturated, you might even prefer the Moto Z family screens. The Z screens are plenty zingy and saturated (more so than IPS phones like the LG G5), but they're not as saturated as Samsung's, even on the "vibrant" setting.

There's nothing to see here, move on. The Snapdragon 820 is currently the top of the line CPU available in US flagship Android smartphones, and it performs similarly here compared to the Samsung Galaxy S7 family and the HTC 10 running on the same CPU. It's a fast and efficient 4 core CPU (two 2.2 GHz high power cores and two 1.6 GHz low power cores) that's plenty fast. While we noticed occasional lag on the midrange Moto G4 with the Snapdragon 617, we experienced zero lag on the Moto Z and Moto Z Force Droid Edition models. There's plenty of Verizon bloatware on board, but Moto's very clean Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow build (close to Nexus clean) helps. Moto is typically very quick to update to new Android versions, and we hope to see Android Nougat at the end of summer when available from Google, but Verizon isn't the fastest carrier when it comes to approving Android OS updates.

Just a few years ago, Motorola was synonymous with mediocre cameras in phones. That certainly has changed, and the 13 and 21 megapixel cameras in the Moto Z and Z Force are able to hold their own against the flagship competition. The Droid Force's 21MP camera with the Sony IMX338 sensor is noticeably better at capturing fine detail than the lower resolution 13MP Moto Z, which isn't surprising. Though both phones are quick to focus thanks to the usual contrast detect system augmented with laser focus, the Moto Z Force nailed more photos spot on in challenging situations like macro and subjects with movement (from branches swaying in the breeze to a zipping kitty). It adds PDAF (phase detection auto focus), which is the next step up not just for camera phones but for mirrorless and dSLR cameras. While both cameras are good, the Moto Z Force camera stands out and yields more keepers. If your phone is your only camera and photography is important to you, the Z Force is the one you want. If you just want good camera phone photos, but it's not the most important feature on your list, then the Moto Z will do.

Both cameras can shoot 4K video at 30 fps and 1080p video at 60 fps. They have optical image stabilization, which helps reduce jitters in video footage and allows the camera to use lower shutter speeds for sharper low light photos. Auto HDR and panorama are standard, and there's an advanced mode if you want control over more settings. The camera app is simple and fairly intuitive.Both phones have relatively good battery life compared to their flagship brethren, and the Moto Z Force obviously has the better battery life since it has a higher capacity 3500 mAh battery vs. the 2600 mAh in the Moto Z. Both smartphones' battery life can be augmented via the Incipio 2220 mAh Moto Mod back and both come with a Moto TurboPower charger, which is akin to a Qualcomm Quick Charge charger. It can top up the battery by 40% in 30 minutes. I had no trouble routinely making it through the day with the Moto Z with moderate use, and the Moto Z Force lasted until the next afternoon. If you're a Pokemon Go fanatic, the data connection and heavy GPS use will result in lower runtimes.

While the overall key feel is better than on most laptops, the tactile feedback wasn't as strong as we've experienced on some other ThinkPads, including the ThinkPad 13 and the X1 Carbon. Nevertheless, I achieved a rate of 96 words per minute with an error rate under 4 percent on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, which is well in line with my typical score.Like most ThinkPads, the T560 has a red TrackPoint pointing stick located between its G and H keys. As on other Lenovo laptops, the little eraser-like nub provides extremely accurate navigation and allows you to perform complex movements, such as highlighting text, clicking on a tiny icon or drawing a precise crop box, without even lifting your hands off of the home row.

If you don't like pointing sticks, the ThinkPad T560's 3.9 x 2.2-inch buttonless touchpad will more than suffice. In our tests, the pad allowed us to move seamlessly around the UI, clicking on icons or drawing figure eights in Windows Paint, without experiencing a hint of the jumpiness we sometimes see with buttonless units. Multitouch gestures -- including pinch to zoom, three-finger swipe (to switch apps) and two-finger scroll -- worked smoothly and consistently.The 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080 nontouch display on our configuration of the ThinkPad T560 offered wide viewing angles and accurate colors. When I watched a trailer for the new Ghostbusters movie, the glowing greens and blues from the apparitions and the green in Slimer's body were quite vibrant but not overly so as we see on some highly saturated displays. Fine details, such as the reflections in a metal hood ornament and the pores on characters' skin, were easy to make out.

Lenovo ThinkPad T560The T560's screen didn't fare quite as well on synthetic benchmarks as it did in our subjective testing. According to our colorimeter, the 1080p panel can reproduce a modest 71 percent of the color gamut, which is less than the 89 percent mainstream-laptop category average and well behind the Dell Latitude E5570 (107 percent). However, the XPS 15 with a 1080p screen (71.9 percent) offered similar output, while the Tecra A50 (64 percent) didn't do as well.

Confirming the accuracy we noted in our viewing experience, the laptop's display returned an impressive Delta-E error rate of 0.63 (0 is perfect). That's well above the category average (0.45) and the Tecra A50 (4.54). The Latitude E5570 (0.7) and the XPS 15 (0.51) were similarly accurate. The ThinkPad T560's matte screen was more than luminous enough in our tests and offered wide viewing angles, with colors staying true at up to 80 degrees to the left or right. However, according to our light meter, the panel registers a modest 237 nits, which is below the 248-nit category average and the Latitude E5570's 242 nits. The Dell XPS scored an impressive 382 nits, while the Tecra A50 trailed the field (172 nits).

In addition to the 1920 x 1080 nontouch model we tested, the T560 is available with a 1920 x 1080 touch panel, a 2880 x 1620 nontouch display or a 1366 x 768 nontouch base model. Only get the low-res, 1366 x 768 screen if you're planning to give the notebook to an underperforming employee … as a punishment.While the T560's speakers are more than adequate for listening to dialogue, they are far too tinny for jamming to music. When I streamed Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina," the audio was loud enough to fill my dining room, but the percussion sounded painfully distorted. The scratchy guitar section on AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" was equally hard to tolerate.

Lenovo ThinkPad T560With the ThinkPad T560, Lenovo found plenty of room for most of the ports a business user would want, with the notable exceptions of USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3. The laptop's right side houses two USB 3.0 ports, a mini DisplayPort and a Kensington lock slot. Its left surface contains a smart-card reader, an Ethernet port, an SD card reader, a 3.5-mm audio jack, an HDMI-out port and a third USB 3.0 connector. While few peripherals today require Thunderbolt 3 or USB Type-C, these standards are becoming more and more popular, so users may miss them a year or two down the road.

With its Intel Core i5-6300U CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SATA SSD, our review configuration of the ThinkPad T560 offered solid performance that was more than good enough for productivity and heavy multitasking. Even with more than 20 Chrome tabs open and a 1080p video playing in another window, the T560 didn't suffer from even a hint of lag. However, pricier competitors with more powerful, quad-core processors outpaced Lenovo's laptop on our tests.

On Geekbench 3, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall performance, the ThinkPad T560 scored 6,210, which is better than the Core i5-6200U-powered Toshiba Tecra A50 (5,865) but a bit behind the mainstream-laptop category average (7,625). With their high-wattage, quad-core processors, the Core i7-6820HQ-powered Dell Latitude E5570 (12,148) and Core i7-6700Q-enabled Dell XPS 15 (13,502) scored far better.Number crunchers will appreciate the dedicated numeric keypad, which has a shortcut key above it for the calculator app.

Lenovo's laptop took a reasonable 4 minutes and 14 seconds to complete our spreadsheet macro test, which matches 20,000 names with their addresses. That's much faster than the category average (5:05) and the Tecra A50 (4:30) but a bit behind the Latitude E5570 (3:29) and the XPS 15 (3:36).

The T560's 256GB SATA SSD took just 28 seconds to copy 4.97GB of mixed media files, for a rate of 181.76 MBps. That's noticeably faster than the category average (130.06 MBps), slightly quicker than the Latitude E5570's SSD (159 MBps) and light-years ahead of the Tecra A50's hard drive (30.47 MBps). However, the 512GB PCIe-NVMe SSD in the XPS 15 clocked in at a faster 254 MBps. The ThinkPad T560's integrated Intel HD 520 graphics processor is good enough for video playback, photo editing and light video editing. However, if you're planning to do computer animation or play demanding games, you'll want a laptop with a discrete graphics chip.

Lenovo's laptop scored a respectable 55,599 on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall graphics prowess. That score is better than the Tecra A50's mark of 54,622 but far behind the category average (73,744), the Latitude E5570 (91,399) and the XPS 15 (114,482), the latter of which was configured with discrete Nvidia 960M graphics.If you pack the ThinkPad T560, you can leave your power cord at home. Thanks to Lenovo's Power Bridge technology, which pairs an internal 44-watt-hour battery with a removable three-cell (23 watt-hours) or six-cell (72 watt-hours) unit, the T560 is the longest-lasting laptop we've tested. With the six-cell battery -- a $15 option that adds 0.4 pounds -- Lenovo's laptop lasted an epic 21 hours and 3 minutes on our test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi. That number drops to a still-strong 10 hours and 10 minutes with the three-cell battery on board.

The mainstream-laptop category average is a mere 6 hours and 13 minutes -- miles behind the T560. The Toshiba Tecra A50 (5:59), the Dell Latitude E5570 (7:17) and the Lenovo ThinkPad P50 (8:25) don't come close, either. Lenovo's ThinkPad T460, the 14-inch sibling of the T560, conked out after 17 hours and 4 minutes because its internal battery is only 23 watt-hours. Thanks to Lenovo's Power Bridge technology, you can also hot-swap the external battery without having to power down the laptop. So if 21 hours isn't enough, you can carry a second unit in your bag and pop it right in as necessary.Lenovo ThinkPad T560On a par with other business laptop webcams, the T560's 720p lens captured bright but splotchy images of my face under the fluorescent lights in our office. Lenovo preloads the ThinkPad T560 with a couple of helpful utilities and a minimal amount of bloatware. Lenovo Companion runs hardware scans on your laptop, finds system updates and provides easy links to support resources. Lenovo Settings lets you configure your Wi-Fi card, sound, camera and display. Unfortunately, like most Windows 10 systems, the laptop also comes with Flipboard and Candy Crush Soda Saga preloaded, along with a shortcut tile that goes to the Photoshop Express page of the Windows Store.Lenovo ThinkPad T560The ThinkPad T560 comes with a standard one-year "depot" warranty, which covers parts and labor, along with the cost of shipping a defective laptop in for service. If you're willing to spend more, you can extend the warranty term up to five years and add on-site service or accidental damage protection, for prices ranging from $19 to $579. The ThinkPad T560 is available in a number of different configurations. If you purchase it from Lenovo.com, you can pick key components, such as the screen, CPU, storage drive, battery and amount of RAM. The display is available in 1366 x 768 nontouch, 1920 x 1080 nontouch, 1920 x 1080 touch and 3K nontouch resolutions. The processor can be a Core i5 or Core i7, and the storage drive can be a mechanical hard drive, a SATA SSD or a blazing-fast PCIe SSD. A backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader and smart-card reader all cost extra.

Though you can't configure a ThinkPad T560 with discrete graphics on Lenovo.com, third-party retailers sell a few versions of the laptop with low-level, Nvidia 940MX graphics on board. For example, PC Connection sells a T560 with a Core i5-6300U CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, a 1920 x 1080 display and the Nvidia GPU, for $1,564.

Enduring for an epic 21 hours with the six-cell battery, the T560 is the longest-lasting laptop we've tested.

The $809.10 starting configuration comes with a 1366 x 768 display, a Core i5-6200U CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and a three-cell battery. Our $1,286.10 review unit came with a 1920 x 1080 nontouch screen, a Core i5-6300U CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, a six-cell battery and Windows 10 Pro. We strongly recommend configuring the ThinkPad T560 with the six-cell, 72-watt-hour battery (a $15 premium), getting at least the 1080p nontouch screen (a $50 upgrade) and choosing an SSD over a mechanical hard drive.

If you're looking for a mainstream business laptop with a 15-inch screen, the Lenovo ThinkPad T560 should be at the top of your list. Lenovo's laptop is a joy to use because of its sharp, colorful display; comfy keyboard; and pair of accurate pointing devices. Even better, the T560's hot-swappable battery offers the longest battery life of any current laptop, and its MIL-SPEC-tested chassis ensures that it can withstand years of constant use.Users looking for a laptop that's easier to carry should consider either the consumer-oriented Dell XPS 15 or the 14-inch ThinkPad T460. However, if you want the ultimate 15-inch productivity laptop, the ThinkPad T560 is your best choice.It's not unusual to see a little bit of fire in an robot-fighting competition, generally in the form of a flamethrower. But the blaze you'll catch in this middleweight match that happened at RoboGames 2016 is something different altogether. This is a battery gone bad, and the ensuing inferno is nothing to sneeze at.

What likely happened here is probably catastrophic failure due to puncturing. Essentially, a violent enough jolt can break the non-conductive wall that separates a battery's anode and cathode, which causes a big, nasty short inside the system. This rapid, uncontrolled exchange of electricity creates a lot of heat, which can start to affect the electrolyte in the battery, causing it to expand and creating extreme pressure inside the battery. That's bad enough as it is, but then sometimes the battery also explodes from that pressure, and the electrolyte catches fire due to all the heat, which is when things gets really bad.

Why does all that matter? This is the same type of battery you're likely to find in your phone or laptop, and it's subject to the same sort of failure.That doesn't necessarily mean that your phone is a bomb waiting to go off; the lithium-ion design of many phone and laptop batteries is more physically robust than so-called "lithium-polymer" or "LiPo" designs often found in RC vehicles and other devices that need to use a ton of power and need to use it fast. The two function with the same basic chemistry, but LiPo batteries pack in more power in a smaller, more fragile frame by using flexible pouches instead of more rigid containers. Some phones and laptops opt for LiPo for space reasons, but many still use the more rigid variety. After all, those gadgets don't need all that much power in the grand scheme of things.

But increasingly popular electric people-moving devices do need all that power. Take hoverboards, for instance, the two-wheeled, self-balancing crafts the Consumer Product Safety Commission just recalled of half a million of, citing concerns about their batteries. When you're dealing with batteries on the scale of the flaming on you see above, it pays to be extra, extra, extra careful when it comes to quality. That's why the CPSC introduced a new certification for the devices, and has been slowly but surely clearing the safe boards for sale in the United States.Most of the time, if it's made by a reputable company and treated with care, a battery is completely safe and the only real danger is running out of juice. But it's good to remember just how much power is packed into these things, and the damage it can do if it gets out the wrong way.

Imagine your laptop, phone, or other battery-driven piece of tech recharging in less than 15 minutes? That’s at least an hour faster than the fastest smartphone recharging systems can manage today, and something most of us would find extremely beneficial. The good news is, the world’s first graphene battery pack is here, and it promises to deliver exactly this level of performance.Revealed by Chinese company Dongxu Optoelectronics, the battery pack is called the G-King. It has a 4,800mAh capacity, which is considerably more than what we see in a smartphone, and more inline with small tablets, or compact laptops like the 11-inch MacBook Air. Dongxu claims the battery regains its lost charge in 13 to 15 minutes. The battery shouldn’t fall over after a single recharge either. Dongxu says the cell is strong enough to be discharged and recharged 3,500 times, which it states is seven times the strength of a conventional Li-Ion battery.

It’s all thanks to graphene, the wonder-material we’ve been hearing about for some time, which has the potential to revolutionize the world of battery technology. In other words, it’s small and basic. It makes up for that by being cheap — it starts at $99 through Kickstarter, and the company expects it to start in the $129 range if and when it hits retailers. (If the campaign hits $1 million, the company plans to offer a slightly more expensive 1080p display option as well.)To power it, you activate the Andromium OS app — which is available in beta form in the Google Play Store — on your phone, then plug it into the shell over microUSB or USB-C. You’re not limited to any particular model, but the company says the phone should have at least 1.5GB of RAM, a dual-core chip, and Android 5.0 or higher. (It also has to support the USB-OTG standard, but that shouldn't be an issue for the vast majority of devices.)

The idea, as it’s always been, is to leverage your phone’s power with a laptop’s form factor. In Andromium’s eyes, buying a new phone then becomes akin to buying a new laptop.
Now, that probably won't hold true for everyone. A cheaper phone won’t be as smooth as a pricier one. Plenty of Chromebooks are affordable and perfectly capable. And while your phone is a tiny computer, it’s not a tiny laptop — much of the Superbook’s success will come down to how well Andromium OS turns Android into competent desktop software.That said, it does seem to have the basics down — a browser, a file manager, a taskbar, a launcher, some level of multitasking, etc. — and as we’ve seen on Chrome OS, Android itself has plenty of apps that translate well enough to desktops. You can watch videos on YouTube, write documents with Microsoft Word, and play a bunch of games. The Superbook's display isn't a touchscreen, though, which could make using those a little less natural.

Andromium says it’ll open its SDK so developers can tailor their apps for Andromium, too, though how much support that gets remains to be seen.In any case, the campaign has raised more than $400,000 in a couple days of funding, way past its initial target. While the usual risk with crowdfunding projects remain, Andromium says its prototypes are finished, and that it hopes to ship the Superbook to backers by February 2017.Either way, given how strong today’s smartphones have become, the time might finally be right to make this nerd fantasy a reality. Again.Stop me if you've heard this idea before: Imagine turning your smartphone into a laptop just by plugging it into a laptop "shell."Yeah... it's not a new idea and yet Superbook, a product that promises to turn your Android phone into a laptop, has already smashed its Kickstarter campaign goal of $50,000 with more than $398,000 pledged as of this writing and 28 days left to go.

On paper the Superbook sounds great, but having tried many other "turn your phone into a laptop or PC" gadgets like the Motorola Atrix and the Laptop Dock that kickstarted this concept way back in 2011, I can't say any of them blew me away.The largest company in denial is Microsoft. It made a big deal out of Continuum, a feature that lets you plug your Windows 10 Mobile phone into any screen and turn it into a near desktop PC experience.It's a sound idea, but one that nobody really cares for it seems. People are perfectly fine owning different devices that run different operating systems.The selling point of "all your data is synced" to your phone is a moot one in my opinion. With cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft's OneDrive, most of us already have access to our data from any device.

At $99, the Superbook costs a lot less than most Chromebooks, but you could easily find a $150 or $200 Chromebook that'll have better specs and doesn't require your phone.Still, I'm not saying the Superbook won't deliver on its promises. I'm just not sure if it's really a solution to any real problem that exists, since you'll still end up carrying two devices (a phone and a laptop). So why not carry a laptop that is a real laptop instead of just an empty shell waiting to be unlocked with your smartphone?Smaller tablets face a strong headwind from the rise of large phones, but the Asus ZenPad Z8 is one solid slate. The speedy, 7.9-inch tablet is not only lighter than similarly sized competitors, but its vivid screen and strong speakers also make it great for watching video and listening to music. This $249 Verizon exclusive also offers 4G connectivity. If it weren't for slight pauses while opening apps and some branded bloatware, we'd have only positive things to say about the ZenPad Z8.

The 0.3-inch thick Asus ZenPad Z8 is quite slender. Its front features a simple, 7.9-inch display, with thin left and right display bezels, and its back panel offers an elegant, textile-patterned, soft-touch finish that is comfortable to hold.Asus ZenPad Z8The ZenPad Z8's 8-megapixel rear camera protrudes slightly from the top left corner of the back panel, and its 2-MP selfie shooter sits off-center to the right in the display's top bezel.Power and volume buttons live on the right side, while a flap on the top left side covers slots for the micro SIM card and microSD card (it supports up to 128GB). The ZenPad Z8's headphone jack sits on the device's topside, and its Type-C USB 2.0 port lives on the bottom. While I wish the tablet offered the speedier, USB 3.0 connectivity, I appreciate the reversible port.

The ZenPad Z8 weighs 10.9 ounces, which makes it lighter than the Acer Predator 8 (12.4 ounces; 0.3 inches) and the LG G Pad F 8.0 (12.31 ounces; 0.35 inches). The Asus ZenPad's 7.9-inch, 2048 x 1536-pixel display is a stunner, offering tons of detail, brightness and color. When I watched a Suicide Squad trailer on this screen, I was impressed by the vivid oranges of El Diablo's flaming hands, the electric green of Joker's hair and the dark, inky shadows of Gotham at night. The panel also showed off the myriad dents on the head of Harley Quinn's mallet.Asus ZenPad Z8The tablet offers a Blue-Free Motion setting that Asus claims will smooth video play quality, but in my testing, it just adjusted movement to that soap-opera-fast speed you see on improperly configured TVs. The Splendid display color adjustment utility allows you adjust hue and saturation balances and offers Bluelight Filter and Vivid presets. The former may help some people go to sleep, while the latter ramps up the color saturation to unnatural levels.

According to our colorimeter, the ZenPad Z8 is colorful, bright and accurate. It produces 104 percent of the sRGB gamut, which is more than the G Pad F 8.0 (79 percent) or average tablet (89 percent) can. The Predator 8 (174 percent) shows even more colors.The ZenPad Z8 earned a 0.88 on the Delta-E (closer to zero is best) test. That beats the scores of the Predator 8 (5), G Pad F 8.0 (1.84) and the average tablet (2.24).The back panel sports an elegant, textile-patterned, soft-touch finish that's comfortable to hold.
Plus, the Asus emitted up to 362 nits (a measure of brightness). That beats showings by the Predator 8 (296 nits), the G Pad F 8.0 (331 nits) and the average tablet (280 nits). The Asus tablet also offers impressively wide viewing angles; I saw its colors stay strong at 70 degrees to the left and right.

The ZenPad Z8's top and bottom speakers filled a medium-size conference room with great sound. The slate provided an excellent rendition of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Run Away with Me," blasting strong synths, clear vocals and sturdy bass.Asus includes a DTS-powered Audio Wizard utility that offers four sound settings: Movies, Music, Gaming, Vocal and Smart. I recommend sticking with Music, as it allows for the clearest sound in trailers, songs, games and podcasts.The ZenPad Z8 offers a nifty Asus ZenUI launcher but also some annoying Verizon junkware. The launcher places navigation animations on top of Android Marshmallow 6.0.1, so icons visually rotate 90 degrees when you flip through screens. ZenUI also makes slight graphical changes over Marshmallow (different buttons for the bottom-row navigation that perform the same functions), and you can disable all of the launcher's twists for a pretty close-to-stock experience.

Asus automatically enables its ZenMotion gestures, which allow you to wake the tablet from sleep mode by double tapping the panel. You can also open apps from sleep mode by tracing one of six letters (specifically C, e, S, V, W and Z) on the screen. You can assign those letters to the apps of your choice, and by default 'C' opens the Camera in rear-shooting mode, 'e' opens email, 'S' opens the Camera in selfie mode, 'V' opens Contacts, 'W' opens Weather and Z opens Chrome.The 7.9-inch, 2048 x 1536-pixel display is a stunner, offering tons of detail, brightness and color.

Ignore the preloaded apps, including Verizon junk like texting app Message+ and glorified account-info app My Verizon Mobile.

Asus' stock email app is good for those who need to connect to all of their email accounts, as it supports accounts on Outlook, Yahoo, AOL, Verizon and Microsoft Exchange, as well as those that run on the POP3 and IMAP standards. You may find Asus' to-do list app Do It Later useful if you use other Asus devices. However, the stock Asus keyboard may prove difficult to use, as its keys are on the small end.The ZenPad Z8's 1.8-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor and 2GB of RAM offer speedy performance. This tablet narrowly edges out the more expensive Predator 8, which is powered by a 1.6-Ghz Intel Atom x7-Z8700 CPU and 2GB of RAM. The less expensive LG G Pad F 8.0, which packs a 1.2-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 4000 CPU and 1GB of RAM, fails in all speed comparisons.

Bereits Ende Oktober bringt Lenovo sein runderneuertes Notebook-Flagschiff Yoga 900 in den Handel. Für den Vorgänger Yoga 3 Pro hatte sich Lenovo einiges an Kritik anhören müssen, die vierte Auflage des stilprägenden Ultrabooks soll nun vieles besser machen. Den zwar stromsparenden, aber lahmeren Intel Core M schickt man aufs Altenteil, stattdessen gibt es CPUs der sechsten Core-i-Generation (Skylake) bis hinauf zum i7. Dessen Kühlung soll dank eines 30 Prozent größeren Lüfters leiser geworden sein.
Überarbeitet wurde auch die Tastatur, die nun wieder eine Reihe mit richtigen Funktionstasten spendiert bekommt. Beim Yoga 3 waren diese als Doppelbelegung auf die Zifferntasten gewandert. Neun Stunden Laufzeit verspricht Lenovo zudem mit dem neuen Akku, der 66 statt 44 Wh speichern kann.

Vom Vorgänger übernommen wurde der 13,3 Zoll große IPS-Touchscreen mit 3200 × 1800 Pixeln und das ungewöhnliche Scharnier. Der Bildschirm lässt sich Yoga-typisch um die Tastaturhälfte herumklappen und das Gerät so unter anderem zum Tablet umwandeln. Abnehmen wie beim Microsoft Surface Book kann man ihn wie gehabt nicht.Typisch für die Yoga-Serie kann der Bildschirm des Yoga 900 einmal komplett um die untere Hälfte herum geklappt werden.
Zwischen Intel Core i5 und i7 kann der Nutzer wählen, Details zu Taktraten und Modellnummern gibt es bisher noch nicht. Der Arbeitsspeicher ist 8 oder 16 GByte groß und die SSD steht mit 256 oder 512 GByte zur Auswahl. Außer den zwei klassischen USB-3.0-Anschlüssen, so wie einer USB-Typ-C-Buchse gibt es noch einen SD-Kartenleser und eine Headset-Buchse.

Das Yoga 900: Dicker und schwerer

Die verbesserte Hardware fordert bei den Maßen ein wenig Tribut: Mit 15 Millimetern Dicke und 1,3 Kilogramm Gewicht hat das Convertible 2 Millimeter und 100 Gramm im Vergleich zum Vorgänger zugelegt. Neben knalligem Orange und dezenterem Silber steht als dritte Farboption nun ein Goldton für den Displaydeckel und die Unterseite zur Auswahl. Neuerdings ist auch das Scharnier in der passenden Farbe lackiert, der Rest des Gehäuse bleibt wie gehabt in Schwarz gehalten.In Deutschland wird die günstigste Ausstattungsvariante des Yoga 900 mit Core i5 und 8 GByte RAM rund 1700 Euro kosten und ab Ende Oktober erhältlich sein. Die neuen Samsung-Smartphone Galaxy S7 und Galaxy S7 Edge wurden laut einem Bericht von Sammobile vor einigen Tagen von der Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in den USA zertifiziert. Beide Modelle wurden dabei in Versionen für die vier großen US-Provider Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile und Sprint genannt, was auch Rückschlüsse auf eine große Verfügbarkeit der neuen Smartphone zulässt.

In den inzwischen nicht mehr öffentlich einsehbaren Unterlagen der FCC war auch ein Screenshot zu sehen, der die ID der Zertifizierung des Akkus und dessen Leistung verrät. Laut diesen Angaben handelt es sich um einen Akku mit 3.600 mAh und damit um eine deutlich stärkere Version als beim Vorgänger Galaxy S6 Edge, der sich mit 2.600 mAh begnügen musste.Damit könnte das neue Smartphone eine deutlich längere Akkulaufzeit besitzen und einen Kritikpunkt an den S6-Modellen beheben. Für die Standard-Version des Galaxy S7 wird übrigens ein Akku mit 3.000 mAh vermutet. Austauschbar werden die Akkus aber laut den bisherigen Gerüchten weiterhin nicht sein.

Offizielle Informationen zu den neuen Smartphones wird es erst am 21. Februar geben, wenn Samsung seinen Unpacked-Event abhält. Den Grund für falsche Ergebnisse, die in den letzten Tagen die Runde machen, sieht Apple in den Tests, die Resultate unter Laborbedingungen ermitteln, die Hardware stets ans Limit pusht und damit eine Testumgebung schafft, die nichts gemein hat mit dem Einsatz der Geräte in der „wirklichen Welt“.

Kids can be messy and accident-prone. That's why Asus put its focus into making the C202 as durable as possible. The chromebook features 3mm of dark-blue rubberized molding around all four corners of its grayish, texturized-plastic chassis. On the bottom, there are also two rubber grips that help keep the C202 from slipping around on your desk or out of your hand. To top it all off, Asus says the C202 can withstand drops of up to 3.9 feet, and its keyboard is resistant to spills of up to 66cc (a bit more than a quarter-cup) of liquid.

Measuring 0.89 by 11.57 by 7.87 inches (HWD) and weighing 2.64 pounds, the C202 is slightly thicker, but lighter than hardy competitors like the Lenovo ThinkPad 11e Chromebook (0.87 inch, 3.1 pounds) and the Dell Chromebook 11 Non-Touch (0.83 inch, 2.7 pounds). And as far as 11-inch chromebooks go, the C202 is definitely on the thicker side. That being said, its small size means it doesn't take up too much space in a backpack or messenger bag, and isn't going to break your back while commuting to work or traveling between classes.

The 11.6-inch display has a resolution of 1,366-by-768 with an antiglare coating, which is good when working outside or in a brightly lit environment. A potential downside is that the screen lacks touch capability, a feature that's found in other chromebooks like the Acer R 11. Furthermore, while the hinge can open up to a full 180 degrees, it's not quite convertible. The idea is that the hinge facilitates easy viewing for collaboration. The reality is that the rubber grip on the bottom prevents the laptop from lying completely flat, and viewing angles aren't great unless you're pretty much hovering directly over the screen.

The keyboard deck and touchpad are both made from silver plastic that looks and feels sleek. The keys also feature blue lettering, which I personally find to be a bit hard to see under dim lighting, but the larger font on the key labels helps with that. The typing experience on the C202 is adequate—the keys feel fine but aren't anything spectacular, and while the keyboard might feel small for some, it's a good size for a child's hands. The two stereo speakers located on the front bottom corners of the chromebook can get pretty loud and have decent audio quality, as long as you don't expect bumpin' bass lines at top volumes.

Port selection is fairly standard. The left panel houses the HDMI port, audio jack, three-in-one card reader (SD/SDHC/SDXC), and a USB 3.0 port; on the right you'll find the other USB 3.0 port, power jack, Kensington lock slot, and two lights that indicate whether you're plugged in or if your battery is charged. Dual-band 802.11ac wireless connectivity, a 720p HD webcam, and 16GB of eMMC flash memory round out the features. Note: Because Chrome OS relies on Web applications and cloud storage, you won't find much local storage on chromebooks. And while there are a number of chromebooks with 32GB of local storage, 16GB isn't out of the ordinary for similarly priced products.

It should also be noted that the C202 was made to be easily taken apart. According to Asus, the keyboard, motherboard, battery, and thermal module can be dismantled in about 10 minutes, so it would theoretically be easier and more cost-effective for schools to make repairs or replace parts. This isn't a feature that we've seen much from chromebooks, and it helps the C202 stand out from the crowd. The C202 comes with a two-year International warranty, as well as a one-year battery pack warranty.

The Asus Chromebook C202 is powered by a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Celeron N3060 processor with Intel HD Graphics 400. The C202 we tested came with 4GB of memory (a 2GB version of this chromebook, the C202SA-YS01, is available for $199), which was fine for light browsing but the system noticeably slowed down when I had multiple tabs open. Music streaming on Spotify and video playback on YouTube were smooth up until I opened the sixth or seventh tab, which caused the track or video I was playing to skip or buffer. At that point, I also began to see some lag when working in various Google Drive applications simultaneously.

Part of the reason might lie with the C202's processor; almost all of the other chromebooks we've tested recently have more juice. For instance, both the Dell Chromebook 11 Non-Touch and the Lenovo 100S Chromebook feature 2.16GHz Celeron processors. And while the difference between a 1.6GHz and a 1.8GHz processor is generally not that noticeable, the CTL Chromebook J2 and Asus Chromebook Flip (C100PA-DB02) both feature the 1.8GHz Rockchip RK3288-C and delivered smooth and nimble multitasking during testing.

In terms of battery life, the C202 clocked in at an impressive 12 hours, 5 minutes in our rundown test, outlasting the Acer Chromebook R 11 (10:35), Lenovo Thinkpad 11e (7:35), CTL Chromebook J2 (8:55), and Dell Chromebook 11 Non-Touch (10:37). This chromebook will last a whole school day and then some.
The durability, affordable price, long battery life, and modular design of the Asus Chromebook C202 make it a good choice if you're looking for a budget computer for yourself or your kids and you don't need Windows. But its sluggish multiple-tab browsing can seriously frustrate anyone trying to work on important projects or documents in Web-based applications. For only $20 more, the Asus Chromebook Flip is a convertible chromebook with a touch screen and impressive multitasking capabilities. The Acer Chromebook R 11, though more expensive, remains our Editors' Choice for its convertible design, large IPS touch screen, and speedy performance.

HP has taken the wraps off its new affordable Chromebook 11 G5. The laptop is priced starting $189 (roughly Rs. 12,800), and will be available online from July, while retailers will sell it from October.

The laptop comes with the Chrome OS interface, which means eventual support for Android apps on the laptop. Google has announced a long list of Chromebooks that will get Google Play support, but also mentioned that all the latest devices will get to use Android apps. There's a variant that even supports touchscreen for added usability, especially while using Android apps on Chromebook.As far as the specifications go, there are two choices of display. Users can choose from an 11.6-inch HD (1366x768 pixels) IPS touchscreen display with Gorilla Glass protection, or an 11.6-inch HD (1366x768 pixels) anti-glare standard display. The HP Chromebook 11 G5 is powered by an Intel Celeron N3060 (2 cores, 2 threads, 2MB L2 Cache, 1.6GHz base clock, 2.48GHz Burst clock) processor, paired with either 2GB or 4GB of RAM. Optics include an HP TrueVision HD webcam at 720p resolution, and storage options can be configured either to 16GB or 32GB.

The touchscreen variant weighs about 1.14kg, while the standard model weighs 1.18kg. Furthermore, the HP Chromebook 11 G5 touchscreen variant lasts for about 11 hours on a single charge, while the standard model lasts for about full 12 hours 30 minutes. Both models come with support for two USB 3.1 ports, and a headphone jack.HP further claims that the Chromebook 11-inch G5 was made keeping in mind students and teachers, and the primary target market is education. The company took feedback from students using a Chromebook, and tried to incorporate that into its new offering. HP's Chrome OS lineup also includes Chromebook 11, Chromebook 11 EE, Chromebook 13, and Chromebook 14.

It goes without saying that — while it certainly has many more use cases — the primary target market for this laptop is education. “Engineers at HP took feedback from teachers and students using Chromebooks in the real world to refine the next generation of devices,” HP says in its press release. “Specifically, they aimed to make the latest version of the thin and light Chromebook 11 G5 more durable and user-friendly for students than ever before.”As for the specs of the laptop, you’ll find an Intel Celeron N3060 Processor, an HP TrueVision HD webcam at 720p resolution, either 2GB or 4GB of RAM, and storage options at either 16GB and 32GB. The touchscreen model weighs in at 2.51 lbs and lasts about 11 hours on a single charge, while the non-touch model weighs 2.61 lbs and lasts up to the full 12 hours and 30 minutes. Both models have two USB 3.1 ports, and a headphone jack.

Navigating the sub-$1,000 mainstream laptop market is an exercise in compromise. Case in point: the Acer Aspire F15. For $599, you get a 15.6-inch laptop that offers good overall performance, a fast SSD and more than 6 hours of battery life, all in an attractive chassis. However, there are a couple of caveats in the form of a lackluster display and a spongy keyboard. But if you consider those minor quibbles, the F15 might just be the notebook you're looking for.Thank you, Acer, for not phoning this one in. You could have just put out a slipshod notebook clad in ugly plastic. Instead, you had the foresight to adorn the lid in silvery metal with a visible and tactile crosshatch that plays up the raised diamond-cut Acer logo. I'm even a fan of the slim gray plastic border that culminates in a slim strip that forms the lip. The overall presentation is jaunty, indeed.

Opening the lid rewards you with an aluminum keyboard deck, which is lightly brushed for visual effect. A slim black plastic border surrounds the deck and gives way to a gray plastic undercarriage.The F15 is dotted with a selection of ports, slots and drives, with technologies old and new. You'll find a USB 2.0 port and a DVD writer located on the notebook's right side with the power port. On the left, there's two USB 3.0 ports, a USB Type-C port, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet and VGA. Hiding along the left front lip is a SD card reader.Measuring 15 x 10.2 x 0.9~1.1 inches, the 5.1-pound F15 is thicker than competing notebooks, such as the Lenovo IdeaPad 300S (3.6 pounds, 13.4 x 9.5 x 0.77 inches), the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5.4 pounds, 14.9 x 10.3 x 0.9 inches) and the HP Notebook 15 (4.8 pounds, 15.1 x 10 x 0.96 inches).

You cant have everything in a $600 notebook, and the 15-inch display on the F15 is one area where its budget price shows. When I watched the 1080p trailer of The Magnificent Seven, Denzel Washington's usually glowing mahogany skin looked dull and listless on the 1920 x 1080 matte screen. Although I could clearly see the creases and stitches in the actor's black shirt, its faded appearance made it look as if it had seen one too many trips in the washing machine.The F15 can reproduce only 62 percent of the sRGB gamut, which is below the 88 percent mainstream average, but enough to skate past the Inspiron 15's 59 percent. The HP Notebook 15 (63 percent) and the IdeaPad 300S (67 percent) werent much better.

Color accuracy, too, was off. The panel got an abysmal 4.6 Delta-E error rating (lower is better), which to be fair isn't too far off the 4.2 average, but well short of our 0 ideal. The IdeaPad 300S, the Inspiron 15 and the HP Notebook 15 notched 4.4, 3.8 and 3.3, respectively.Averaging 201 nits on our brightness test, the F15 fell below the 259 nit brightness typical for a mainstream notebook. The other laptops did only marginally better, with the Inspiron 15 measuring 239 nits, while the IdeaPad 300S and the HP Notebook 15 produced 225 and 220 nits.Despite their diminutive size, the pair of speakers mounted on the F15's undercarriage can pump out loud, clear audio. Fantasia's powerful vocals in "Free Yourself" filled the room, but I noticed that the accompanying harp and piano sounded tinnier than usual. When I switched over to Janelle Monae's "Yoga," the bass was pretty nonexistent.

The F15's backlit island-style keyboard delivers a mediocre, but tolerable, typing experience. I found that the 1.6 millimeters of key travel and 52 grams of force needed to depress the keys made for less responsive keystrokes. The spongy feel forced me to strike the keys harder than I'd like, which affected my score on the 10fastfingers typing test, dropping my average 60 words per minute down to 51 wpm. However, I definitely appreciated the massive 4.1 x 3.0-inch touchpad. No matter which multitouch gestures I performed (two-finger scroll, three-finger tap or four-finger tap), my fingers were rarely in danger of hitting the edge. Overall, the touchpad was fast and responsive and the bottom corners delivered clickier feedback than the keyboard.

Equipped with a 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-6200U processor, a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, the F15 is an able workhorse. It's not the strongest in the stable, but it'll get the job done. The laptop seamlessly streamed an episode of Voltron from Netflix with seven Google Chrome tabs running in the background and a full system scan running.On Geekbench 3, a synthetic overall performance test, the F15 scored 6,044, which is below the 7,521 mainstream average. However, that's on a par with the Inspiron 15 (6,331), the HP Notebook 15 (5,784) and the IdeaPad 300S (5,753), all of which have 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-6200U CPUs.

A few columns ago we mentioned possible complications with the new OLED display technology for TVs and computer monitors. Steve Suderman, the proprietor of Good Vibes, responded: "We have yet to see an OLED failure of any kind . . . only sold 10 so far but the track record is 100%." You rarely see a solid-state drive, let alone a 256GB SSD, on a sub-$600 laptop, but the F15 comes with one and it helps the performance immensely. Because of its SSD, the laptop duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in a reasonable 44 seconds. That translates into a file- transfer rate of 114.3 megabytes per second, which is a tad short of the 128.1MBps average. However, that's much better than the Inspiron 15 and the HP Notebook 15, whose 1TB, 5,400-rpm hard drives could achieve only 31.9MBps and 29.6MBps, respectively. The IdeaPad 300S and its 500GB 5,400-rpm hard drive reached only 28.1MBps.During the OpenOffice Spreadsheet Macro Test, the F15 paired 20,000 names and addresses in 4 minutes and 29 seconds, beating the 5:02 category average. The HP Notebook 15 and the Inspiron 15 were only a second behind at 4:30, with the IdeaPad 300S in hot pursuit with 4:31.

With its Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU, the F15 could never be mistaken for a gaming laptop. While it could definitely run browser-based titles, taxing games such as Doom, The Witcher 3 or Rise of the Tomb Raider are pretty much out of the question.When we tested its graphics performance with the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark, the laptop notched 58,642, well below the 73,353 average. The Inspiron 15, the IdeaPad 300S and the HP Notebook 15, which have the same GPU, did about the same, scoring 62,763, 52,840 and 51,066, respectively.It won't get you through a full day, but three-quarters of a workday isn't too shabby. On the Laptop Battery Test, the F15 spent 6 hours and 22 minutes continuously surfing the web over Wi-Fi before it tapped out.

MORE: Laptops with the Longest Battery Life While it matched the Inspiron 15's time and beat the HP Notebook 15 (5:51), it still missed the 6:31 mainstream average. The IdeaPad 300S lasted a few minutes more at 6:25.The F15 is a cool customer for the most part. After running a full-screen Hulu video for 15 minutes, the touchpad and center of the laptop measured 84 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The bottom of the notebook reached 101 degrees, which is higher than our 95-degree comfort threshold.If you plan to do a lot of video chatting, you may want to get an external webcam.The test shots I took with the 720p camera were grainy and blown out. My pink dress is at least two shades darker than what the image shows and my skin looks gray. To add insult to injury, there's a bit of lens flare coming from the overhead lights.

It might be interesting to compare how these services to, say, Hyper-V and VMWare. This is another area where I believe Microsoft is still quite far behind the market leader, but it’s still established itself as a credible number two.While I have a huge problem with the way Microsoft handled the “Get Windows 10” upgrade advertisements in Windows 7 and 8.1 for much of the past year, this kind of pop-up, as described by Laptop Magazine, is perhaps more defensible.Windows 10 — the operating system, not the Edge browser itself — has apparently begun encouraging users to switch away from Chrome, warning them that it’s a drain on their laptop batteries.The premium notebook has a hybrid battery split into two thinner pieces, offering a battery life up to 9 hours 45 minutes. Priced at Rs 1,19,990, HP Spectre will be available in India from July 25, 2016. A hit or a miss, only users will tell.

HP ticked all the boxes it wanted to when it developed the Spectre 13. It's an incredibly thin laptop that won't take up much space no matter where you store it, nor will its 2.45-pound weight break your back. Thanks to its Core i5 and i7 processors and solid overall performance, you can get a lot of work done on this laptop without it slowing you down. It also won't overheat on you thanks to the hyperbaric cooling system, even if you'll have to deal with the occasional hum of the fan.

The Spectre 13's metallic-enhanced design may not be everyone's style, but I do give HP props for not making a MacBook or MacBook Air clone. Windows users have another flashy notebook to choose from in the Spectre 13, and one that will surely make a couple of heads turn. I also appreciate that HP didn't try to make the Spectre 13 a hybrid—it's a laptop for people who prefer laptops thanks to its sturdy hinge and comfortable keyboard. I only wish the trackpad gave me more room to breathe.

Overall, there are scant few compromises with the HP Spectre 13. It doesn't have any 4K or touchscreen display options, so keep that in mind if you've wanting a laptop that supports either. You also won't be able to lean the display back very far due to the hinge's design, but that's a small price to pay. If you've considered the new, £1,049 MacBook but are not married to OS X, the HP Spectre 13 is a good alternative that has more connectivity options and a fair bit more computational grunt.

The Surface Book is a totally new product in Microsoft's range, representing the first laptop the company has ever made. The new but more familiar Surface Pro 4, which launched alongside the Surface Book on 6 October, is designed to be tablet first, laptop second, while the Surface Book takes a laptop-first, tablet-second approach with a 13in detachable touchscreen and a full-size, sturdy keyboard. MICROSOFT SURFACE BOOK REVIEW: PRICE, MODELS AND RELEASE DATE

In the UK there are four (update: now five) Surface Book models to choose between with variations on the processor, amount of RAM and storage capacity. There's also the optional dedicated graphics card which is housed in the keyboard. Take a look at table below for specs of each Surface Book model.

Microsoft originally decided not to launch the 1TB model in the UK. The official Surface Book release date in the UK is 18 February. You'll be able to buy the Surface Book from Microsoft, PC World and Currys which kindly supplied us with one to review.
Prices range from £1,299 up to £2,649 so the Surface Book is not a budget laptop by any stretch of the imagination. It's not totally outrageous either but it more expensive than a key rival, the MacBook Pro, which starts from £999 for the 13in model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage. You need to spend £1,999 on the 15in model to get a discrete AMD Radeon R9 graphics card; the rest have Intel Iris Pro Graphics.

Lithium-ion batteries are part of items that we use every day and we hardly think about them, but they can cause explosions and fires if they’re prone to overheating. That’s the case for batteries that are part of laptop computers sold in the last few years by HP and by Sony, and now those batteries have been recalled.

Both HP and Sony recommend powering down your computer and removing the battery if you have an affected model. Run the computer on A/C power, and contact the company for a replacement that should be less prone to overheating.The HP recall includes batteries sold between March 2013 and August 2015, and that work with the HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion. They may have come with the computer or been purchased separately for a backup battery. The CPSC has the specific battery barcodes that you should look for if you have an HP or Compaq laptop. If you have an affected model, go to HP’s recall site or contact the company at 888-202-4320.

Sony also announced a much smaller recall last week, but we thought we’d mention it as long as we’re talking about laptop batteries. The risk of overheating and fire is similar, and these batteries also came from Panasonic. There haven’t been any reported fires or injuries, though, since there are significantly fewer of these batteries out there.

The Sony batteries were for sale from February 2013 through October 2013, and customers could have received them as part of their computer, from a repair by Sony, or purchased separately for a backup battery. The CPSC has the list of affected Vaio models, and you should contact the company at 888-476-6988 for a replacement battery if you have one of them.

The ThinkPad T560's advantage over similar systems, like the ThinkPad T460, is, of course, its large 15.6-inch screen. My review unit came equipped with a 1920 x 1080, nontouch display, which is just sharp enough for a screen this size. It feels roomy enough for screen-intensive tasks like editing large spreadsheets, and split-screen multitasking is comfortable.I'm a big fan of the matte finish that comes on most ThinkPad models, including this one. The screen has an anti-glare coating that wards off distracting reflections from windows and overhead lights. And while many matte displays are a bit on the dim side, this one offers average brightness, which is good for typical indoor use. A couple of other display options are available, including a 1080p touch screen. I wouldn't recommend that option, since power-hungry touch panels tend to drain your battery in a hurry. You can also opt for a low-res, 1366 x 768 display, which most workers should avoid.

True to the ThinkPad brand, the T560 comes with a top-notch keyboard that's perfect for marathon typing sessions. You get an extremely generous 2.41 millimeters of key travel, which is well above the 1.5mm that we consider the minimum for a work laptop. The keys also offer good amount of feedback on each stroke, even if they don't feel quite as snappy as the keys on the ThinkPad T460.In addition to the standard touchpad, the ThinkPad T460 includes a red TrackPoint nub amidst the G, H and B keys. This lets you precisely control your mouse cursor without moving your hands from home row on the keyboard, but it can take some getting used to if you're a TrackPoint newbie.

Battery life

If longevity is your top priority, there's no better laptop than the ThinkPad T560. The system lasted longer on our battery test than any other laptop we've ever tested — at least, if you opt for the extended, six-cell battery. With the beefier battery attached, the T560 ran for 21 hours and 3 minutes, which is about twice as long as this system ran with the standard, three-cell battery. That's long enough to last through two complete workdays and then some.Even the standard battery life of 10 hours and 10 minutes is pretty impressive when you consider that the average 15-inch laptop runs for just over 6 hours on the same battery test, which simulates continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi. Rival systems, including the Toshiba Tecra A50(5:59) and Dell Latitude E5570 (7:17), all lagged well behind the T560.

Heavy multitasking is no problem for the ThinkPad T560. My review unit came equipped with an Intel Core i5-6300U processor with 8GB of RAM, a configuration that allowed me to breeze through my workday without a hitch. Some rival 15-inchers are even more powerful, though.The T560 racked up a very solid score of 6,210 on the Geekbench 3 benchmark test, which measures overall performance. That score's pretty good for the money, even if it lags slightly behind the category average of 7,625. Pricier systems like the Core i7-6820HQ-equipped Dell Latitude E5570 (12,148) blow the ThinkPad T560 out of the water, but the Dell's performance is overkill for the average worker.

The T560 also did pretty well on our spreadsheet test, matching 20,000 names to their addresses in a very solid 4 minutes and 14 seconds. That time beats the category average of 5 minutes and 5 seconds, but runs about a minute behind pricier rivals.
The ThinkPad T560 can be ordered in a huge variety of hardware configurations through Lenovo.com. The baseline model offers a low-res 1366 x 768-pixel display, a Core i5-6200U processor with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive, all for $809.Our midrange review unit hits a much better sweet spot for the average worker. It comes equipped with a higher-res 1920 x 1080-pixel display, a more powerful Core i5-6300U processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of speedy solid-state drive (SSD) storage, all for $1,286.It's hard to find fault with the ThinkPad T560. It's simply the best 15-inch business laptop on the market, combining solid performance with strong security, a quality keyboard and a durable design. It's absolutely epic battery life doesn't hurt, either.

Commuters who don't mind sacrificing a bit of screen space might be better off with Lenovo's more portable ThinkPad T460, which is similar to the T560 but has a smaller, 14-inch display and slightly shorter battery life. Dell's XPS 15 is also a solid pick thanks to its relatively lightweight design, but it lacks business-class durability and security. That makes the ThinkPad T560 the big-screen business laptop to buy.

One of the realities of living in Toronto, Canada, about a two-hour drive from the nearest American city when traffic cooperates, is experiencing a distinctly four-season climate. Winter lives up to the stereotype of being bitterly cold, before giving way to a mild and rainy spring, and eventually a hot and humid summer. The warmth lasts for no more than three to four months, however, before the leaves turn orange in October and Starbucks brings out the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

For the past three months, I have been testing the AyeGear J25 Jacket to see how it holds up to those Canadian extremes, starting with a below-freezing, snowy day in early April to a comparatively sweltering 90º day in mid July. In addition to wearing the jacket around Toronto, I brought it with me on a recent trip to San Francisco, allowing me to test its convenience going through airport security and away from home in general. On my trip to San Francisco, I packed a tableful of items into the jacket with ease, including a 15-inch MacBook Pro, Apple Watch, two iPhones, two SD cards, EarPods, Lightning-to-USB cable, wall charger, pack of chewing gum, car keys, sunglasses, passport, boarding pass, charging case, portable battery pack, wallet, and loose change. In addition to all of that, the jacket could hold two iPads.

My immediate reaction after putting on the jacket was that, perhaps as to be expected, it was rather heavy. It almost feels like wearing a lead apron at a dentist office during teeth X-rays. Walking around with all of your electronics and personal belongings strapped to your body obviously hunkers you down somewhat, and wearing this jacket for an extended period of time can become rather uncomfortable.
The weight might be a worthy tradeoff for frequent flyers, however, as the jacket makes airport security a much less frustrating experience. Anyone that has stood in line at the TSA checkpoint knows it can be a tedious, albeit important, process: take your shoes off, take your laptop out of its bag, and place all of your individual belongings in the bins before proceeding through the metal detector. When wearing the jacket, however, all you have to do is quickly take it off with your shoes, much to the delight of those waiting behind you.
AyeGear's J25 Jacket is built to last in all weather conditions. It is made from a mixture of cotton (67 percent) and nylon (33 percent) that proved to be waterproof -- water drops bead off -- and wrinkle free. The jacket also has an adjustable rollaway zipped hood, a breathable lining, and removable sleeves to turn the jacket into a vest, making it useful for hiking trips or similar activities in warmer weather.
