LENOVO ThinkPad T430si Battery all-laptopbattery.com Despite the low-ish specs, there's no getting around the Surface Go's disappointing battery life. It clocks in at around seven hours of use and we've seen some figures banded about at six - although we think for real-world use that's a little bit on the harsh side. We did get oven seven hours out of it once. The Surface Go uses Windows 10, as you'd expect. But here it's in S Mode. This is a special mode of Windows that doesn't enable you to install desktop apps. Instead, you can only get your apps from the Windows Store. Now, it is easy to switch out of S Mode to install desktop apps (there's a special app in the Windows Store to perform the switch) but it is irreversible.Microsoft claims it is more secure to be in S Mode because dodgy applications can't be installed. However, if you consider yourself a relatively sensible user in terms of the apps you install, we'd recommend switching it out of S Mode right away. That's for two reasons. The Windows Store is limited in terms of apps; firstly because all the apps have to be approved by Microsoft; secondly because developers don't see the advantage. Google Chrome isn't in there for example, while we found some apps like Paint.net which are free normally but are pay-for in the Store. Microsoft wants more devices to use S Mode and so developers may increasingly develop apps for the Store (mind you, we've been saying that for years) but at the moment support remains patchy.Additionally, S Mode restricts you to not only use Microsoft Edge but also to use Bing as your search engine. This is nothing short of ridiculous. Edge has become a really good browser and has enough features for many, but restricting it yet further simply doesn't make sense. Elsewhere the Go has cameras front and rear, which is a welcome addition for Windows Hello. This enables you to log-in with your face and works well but you do need to be within a certain angle of the camera - it doesn't seem as wide-angled as Apple's Face ID, for example. The Surface Go isn't a do-anything device like the Surface Book 2 - and neither should you expect it to be given the price difference between the two. Instead, it's a super-portable machine for doing bits and pieces on the go. Emailing, taking notes in a meeting, and watching a bit of iPlayer on the train on the way home.It has all the successful hallmarks of Surface and, while the additional costs of the keyboard and pen are annoying for your bank balace, they're integral to how you should think about using this device (especially the former).
Surface Go could have smaller bezels, it could have a lot better battery life, and it probably could be leaner with an ARM-based processor. But changing the chip would not only annoy Microsoft's great mate Intel, it would limit it in other ways: after all, this is a full PC you can install desktop apps on (if you take Windows 10 out of S Mode). And with this level of portability, that's certainly not to be sniffed at. Now with Apple Pencil support, the entry-level iPad is even more of a winner than before. In terms of pure tablets, this is the best. What the Surface Go brings to the party over and above this device is the ability to use Windows apps and work in the same way as any other laptop (well, if you buy the Type Cover keyboard). The Surface Pro 4 is getting on a bit and we're expecting it to be replaced soon. Even if there is a new one, that doesn't change the fact it's a rival to the Surface Go simply because it's more of a performance version. The best Android tablet we've seen yet, the Galaxy Tab S4 also has some PC-rivalling capabilities thanks to Samsung's DeX. It's not far off being as expensive as a Surface Pro even if the S Pen stylus is included (the keyboard isn't). MSI, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer which forays into high-end gaming laptops has launched a new product for the Indian masses. The company has unveiled its first professional laptop in India which the company is calling as PS42. The professional will be available in two variants with the top-end variant featuring the latest 8th-gen Intel Core i7 processor which will be clubbed with a Nvidia GeForce MX150 graphics card. This would be enough to power the device through some basic graphics intensive software. Under the hood, the MSI PS42 is backed by an 8th-gen Intel Core i7 processor which is paired with a Nvidia GeForce MX150 GPU graphic card to take care of the graphics. The MSI PS42 comes with 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD. The laptop features a slim frame measuring 15.9mm and weighs just 1.1kg making it an ideal to carry around. Ports and other hardware The PS42 comes with Nahimic 3 audio engine speakers which enables the laptop to produce an immersive 7.1 channel cinematic surround sound effect. The professional laptop features dual exhaust thermal design so that the device does not get overheated even with intensive usage. As for the ports, there are two USB Type-C ports, two full-sized USB ports, one 3.5mm combo jack, and one SD card reader. MSI is also claiming that the PS42 is backed by a powerful battery which can last up to 10 hours with a single charge. We would like to test the device before verifying the claims. Pricing and availability: As mentioned earlier, the PS42 will be available in two variants. The low-end variant with Core i5 processor will retail at Rs. 77,990 and the top-end variant with Core i7 processor will be available at Rs 99,990. Both the laptops will be available for sale at all leading online stores such as Amazon, Flipkart, and Paytm and also on MSI retail stores across the country.
Plugging in the power -- or at least what you think is power -- to a USB-C powered laptop can connect your computer, and the valuable personal data on it, directly to hackers. Your personal financial information, passwords and documents stored on the laptop could help a cybercriminal steal your identity. The laptop may even be used to attack your employer’s computers and network. The European Union is already moving to require all smartphones be compatible with USB-C power adapters – itself a move that endangers users’ privacy. If the EU made a similar standard for laptop computers, it would threaten to make the problem worse, by increasing the number of people vulnerable to what is basically the digital equivalent of pick-pocketing. Mobile phones have been hackers’ targets for years. Phones that are left behind or stolen can contain sensitive personal data that can let a criminal open a new bank account or take out a loan. However, a far more insidious way to get the data is to simply connect to the phone and steal everything it holds. As the phone is not lost, the user may be unaware that anything is wrong. Attackers try to get access to mobile phones via their internet connections and local wireless connection technologies like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.But some attackers are finding a weakness in phone charging. Many newer phones use the same port – one of several types of USB – for both connecting to a computer and charging. A charger could be modified to attack your phone via that trusted connection. This has led some researchers to recommend never using public USB chargers for your smartphone. Older mobile phones, including some smartphones, that used power-only connections didn’t have to worry about this issue. Users of these devices can plug in to public multi-device charging stations without worry, as there is no connection to the device’s data. For those with combined data and power ports, however, the same port that many people only use to power their phone is commonly used by hackers and even law enforcement to access the data on it.Until recently, laptop computers had enjoyed some protection, with most having a dedicated power port to connect their chargers to. Other purpose-specific ports allowed connections to desktop monitors, conference room projectors and other devices, without need for concern. USB-C changed this, with one high-speed port now able to provide and receive power, send video signals to projectors and monitors, and connect to USB thumb drives and numerous other peripheral devices. Lenovo ThinkPad L420 Battery all-laptopbattery.com There are bleeding-edge technologies that promise to one day free us from not only having to find a power outlet when we start panicking about a device’s dying battery, but cords and cables altogether. Ossia’s Cota technology, for example, can wirelessly deliver power to electronics the same way wifi delivers internet to your phone and computer. But a practical mass rollout of such a system is still years away. The reality is that cords, plugs, and physical power outlets will be with us for many decades to come, so even the smallest of improvements or innovations that make plugging in our gear less of a hassle are welcome. The surprisingly useful addition of a simple LED torch to its plug isn’t the only thing that makes Stella a worthwhile upgrade; Ten One Design’s execution is nearly-perfect. The MacBook version of the Stella comes in two colour versions, while the PC version comes in two and three-prong options. (Photo: Andrew Liszewski/Gizmodo)The $35 (£27) cable, which is currently only available in the US, but fingers crossed it comes to the UK soon, is designed to replace the section of cord that connects your laptop’s power brick to a wall outlet, and is currently available in versions for both Apple and PC laptops—but a compatibility double-check may be a good plan if you’re buying the Stella for a non-MacBook device.I tested the Stella with an older MacBook Pro, and swapping out the brick’s standard power cord for Ten One Design’s upgrade was as simple. The Stella does look a little different than the power cord Apple includes with its MacBooks; trading a thick rubber sheathing for a braided nylon shell. But I much prefer how the Stella looks, and the braided cable is actually more flexible, so it’s easier to wind around the power brick when cable wrangling. Despite the extra tech, the Stella’s plug is still small enough to easily squeeze into a crowded power bar. The business-end of the Stella—the part that actually plugs into an outlet—is only just slightly bulkier than Apple’s. But it can still easily squeeze into a crowded power bar, and Ten One Design has made the braided cord exit the plug at a 45-degree angle which the company claims will help reduce stress and damage at the connection point. It looks like a perfectly normal electrical plug, but inside the Stella is additional hardware similar to what you’d find inside a non-contact voltage tester, tools electricians use to detect the presence of a live wire without actually having to touch it by detecting the surrounding electrical field. The Stella incorporates a simplified version of this technology to automatically activate an LED when power is detected. It’s not quite as sensitive as the tool an electrician would use, but I found it was able to detect a power outlet from as far as a couple of inches.
The Stella uses a non-replaceable battery to power its low-energy LED that Ten One Design claims will work for at least a decade—well past the life of any laptop. But while the LED is certainly bright enough to illuminate an outlet when it’s a couple of inches away, it’s in no way usable as a torch. You’ll want to treat it more as a last mile tool (or in this case, a last inches tool) that can save you from having to blindly try to jam a plug into an outlet in the dark, but you’ll need to know where that outlet is first. Is the Stella a must-have upgrade? If your laptop spends its entirely life sitting in one place, then the answer is no. But if your laptop never leaves your side, joining you on business trips and hotel stays where you’re constantly plugging and unplugging your computer into strange and different places, then there’s a strong case to be made for the upgrade. But I actually run into this problem far more often with my iPhone’s charging cable, so if Ten One Design ever manages to squeeze a smart LED into that tiny wall wart, I’ll be first in line with my credit card. The Surface Go is a super portable 2-in-1 that's great as a second go-anywhere machine. Unfortunately, battery life isn't great and once you've added the accessories it's not cheap. But for a portable machine there's little else to take it on.
While the back of the Surface Go is attractive in that familiar Surface way with its integrated kickstand, there's a problem: the front bezels are massive. It's a shame because the 10-inch PixelSense display is better than many in this class, but it looks a bit out of date straight out of the gate.As a tablet, the Go weighs just 522g, making it highly portable. You'll find yourself placing it in a folder, sleeve or folio to carry it round as it's not hugely different in footprint to an A4 sheet of paper. It's around 8mm thick, enabling it to be slotted into small gaps in baggage with ease. It's portability that is the Go's main strength, as its name suggests. We've always been fans of the Surface kickstand, but like other 2-in-1s the Surface Go does present usability problems with its optional Type Cover keyboard attached. Firstly, train or airline tables offer limited, thus the keyboard is often stuck out from the table and isn't stable. Secondly, it just isn't that good to work with on your lap. In an ideal world nobody would be hunched over a computing device on their lap. But the real world isn't like that and if you regularly work at conferences or on public transport you'll probably be much better off with a laptop. There are two Surface Go configurations, which differ in terms of the RAM (4GB vs 8GB) and storage (64GB vs 128GB). Whether that is enough for you to buy the pricier model (it's an extra £130) depends on what tasks you'll need the Surface Go to handle. This isn't a primary device in our opinion unless you're going to be doing browsing, typing and emailing. The processor inside the Surface Go has an interesting name – Pentium Gold. With Intel's prevalent Core i3, i5, i7 and i9 branding it's easy to forget that Intel still makes Pentium processors. The silly thing about the nomenclature is that modern Pentium processors bear no relation to their predecessors and is part of the Kaby Lake series of chips introduced at the start of 2017. They slot in between the super-basic Celeron line-up and the Core m3 (used in the Apple MacBook) and Core i3 series. We weren't expecting the Surface Go to perform that well and in terms of pure grunt it doesn't have a lot. But Windows 10 is fairly easy going on most devices and the Surface Go is no exception. OK, so it was a little tardy installing some Windows Updates and a couple of apps but otherwise it was absolutely fine for everyday use including editing photos and running numerous apps simultaneously.Surface devices are supposed to offer the latest specs, although they have been weirdly slow to move to USB-C and dump proprietary adapters. The Go has a headphone jack and USB-C port but, alas, Microsoft has stuck with the proprietary Surface connector for charging. We'd expect this to change for a secondary USB-C in a later version, which would make all the difference in terms of connectivity. There is, however, a microSD card reader under the kickstand, which is potentially handy (although it does mean photographers wanting to use the Surface Go for simple photo edits will need to use a microSD card and adapter in their camera).
Dell Latitude E5420 Battery all-laptopbattery.com While fires in carry-on items create their own hazards on flights, experience has shown that they can be extinguished with water. Crew can’t reach bags in cargo areas during flight, so must rely on a plane’s fire suppression systems. The U.S. Homeland Security Department in June 2017 funneled more such electronics into cargo holds out of fears that electronics as small as a tablet computer could be used to hide terrorist bombs. The agency stopped short of a threatened ban on taking the devices into airline cabins, but required additional screening of electronics. The FAA hasn’t imposed any new restrictions on what passengers may pack in checked bags. Last year, in a notice to airlines, it said they should conduct a safety study to determine what more they should do to limit the risks of battery fires in cargo areas. The FAA tests found that the anti-fire halon gas installed in airline cargo areas wouldn’t extinguish a lithium battery fire, but it prevents the blaze from spreading to adjacent material such as cardboard or clothing. However, aerosol cans exploded in tests even after being bathed in the halon gas, the FAA found. As a species, we've evolved with a large brain and just two hands. So we're smart enough to have invented laptops, mobile phones, tablet computers and electronic book readers, but limited in our capacity to carry them around. No wonder the first thing we do after ordering the new iPhone is to source a protective case that can be flipped open with just one hand.We really do tote a phone, pad, notebook and e-reader around during the business day, and a wall charger, cables, a back up battery, and some transport, credit and building access cards. With all that tech, the carry cases we use are key, and assuming one hand will be fully occupied with some kind of briefcase, we need to maximise what we can do with the other. With the right gear, you can use just one hand to open and answer your phone, swipe onto the bus, tram or train, tap and pay for coffee and use your proximity card to access the office, all the while carrying your tech bag in the other.Almost every full coverage phone case in the stores is folio style, the kind that opens horizontally like a book. Try answering one of those single-handedly. Even with a handset as small as our present iPhone 6, it's not easy and runs a high risk of dropping the device. We've long preferred a vertical flip case where the front cover can be unlatched with one thumb and then opens downwards under gravity. Much easier and safer to answer with one hand but, for some reason, much harder to find and buy.
For our new iPhone Xs, we sourced just the case we wanted from iCoverLover.com.au, at $34 in our preferred red leather. For just $60, the sturdy STM Chapter notebook briefcase has space for a laptop, external keyboard, a paper file if we need one and a charger. Supplied What's the good of a close-fitting $200 leather envelope for our MacBook Pro, without a carry handle or space to pack even a few pages of printed material? For just $60, our sturdy STM Chapter notebook briefcase has space for a laptop, and external keyboard, a paper file if we need one and a charger.STM was born because co-founder Ethan Nyholm couldn't find the right bag for his own laptop, and wearied of biking it around in a padded post-pack inside a backpack. After two decades teamed with Adina Jacobs, there's still a philosophy that products are best designed by people who actually use them. Their Grace and Myth ranges especially reek of sensible style.Card carrying It needed to be a case where we tap the card without removing it from the wallet. Remember, we only have one spare hand. Conventional wallets are no good because they store cards stacked, and proximity readers in buildings, buses and stores detect and reject multiple cards.Eventually, we found the flip open Gryphen Hoxton travel pass holder with slots for two cards. Of course, you can slip in two cards a side to make four, but then you strike the "multiple cards detected" problem. On eBay, we located a source of RFID blocking metallic fabric, the kind used to make wallets that can't be scanned by scammers. We cut out two credit-card-sized pieces that slip between pairs of swipe cards, so scanners detect only one card at a time. Now, with laptop bag and brolly in one hand, the other can easily access and open our phone, or tap any card we like.Business professionals plagued by short battery lives for their laptops can rejoice now that Intel has unveiled new efforts to increase the battery power of their devices at Computex 2018 in Taipei. At the conference, Intel said they were working on a new Low Power Display Technology that combined more efficient energy use with lower power consumption to increase the battery life of a 13-inch display. For some devices, that could lead to a battery that lasts longer than a full day."The display consumes the most battery in a device, and one way we're working to enable all-day battery life is by co-engineering the new Intel Low Power Display Technology, featured in a one watt panel manufactured by Sharp and Innolux, which can cut LCD power consumption by half," Gregory Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel, said in a press release. "Through continued innovation with the industry, we expect to deliver an additional four to eight hours of local video playback - that means battery life could be up to 28 hours on some devices."
In a presentation at the conference, Intel played a time-lapse video showing the laptop operating for 25 hours. Bryant also added that changes in hardware and new Intel GPU software allow for the lower battery power use.According to the release, lighting up the screen is the most energy-consuming task laptops perform, and their system takes measures to address this while keeping screen brightness relatively high. With the help of Sharp and Innolux, their new screens use half of the energy they used to."The latest Intel processors manage the overall system to conserve power, and therefore preserve battery life. For example, with Intel 6th generation processor technology, if the system is running an HD video, the processor will automatically lower the power usage of anything else within the system that is not in use at that time," Intel noted in their guide for testing their batteries. The tech will only work for certain laptops equipped with Intel's software and hardware, and anyone using Nvidia or AMD graphics cards are out of luck, the release said.A number of laptop makers are now prioritizing extended battery life in their new products and working on ways to optimize power use or create smart systems that can automatically reduce energy usage for you.Microsoft announced last year that Windows 10 will try to reduce battery drain with their new Power Throttling feature, identifying which programs are using the most energy and close those not in use.The tiny, thin pair of prongs used on electrical plugs are tricky to jam into a power outlet if you can’t see what you’re doing. Ten One Design’s new Stella plug improves on the design with something we’ve never seen before: a built-in torch that automatically turns on near outlets to light the way. HP said on Thursday that it’s commencing a battery recall for the company’s notebooks and mobile workstations, including the HP Probook 64x, HP x360 310 G2, HP Envy m6, and others. The affected laptops were sold worldwide between December 2015 and December 2017. Affected batteries were also sold as accessories during the period.According to HP, the batteries in question “have the potential to overheat” after use. In some cases, that overheating could cause the batteries to become unstable and catch fire. HP also warned that the batteries could be a “burn hazard to customers.”The PC maker didn’t say in a support page posted to its website how many units are affected in the recall. However, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said in its own statement that “about 50,o00” units sold in the U.S. are at risk. Nearly 3,000 more units sold in Canada could also be a problem. According to the CPSC, it has identified eight cases of the batteries “overheating, melting, or charring.” One person suffered a first-degree burn from the battery and three others had property damage totaling $4,500. HP has created a support page where its laptop owners can see whether their units are at risk of overheating. If owners discover they’re subject to the recall, HP will send them a free battery replacement and help them get it safely swapped out.“HP’s primary concern is for the safety of our customers,” the company wrote on its support page. “HP is proactively notifying customers, and will provide replacement battery services for each verified, eligible battery, at no cost.”At some point in your laptop's life, the battery is going to get worse and worse until it doesn't work anymore. This week on the Tom's Guide forums, one user asked for help in finding the best battery replacement when that dreaded day comes.mhcwei writes, "I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 laptop, and I need a new battery. Dell told me it [the battery] is 65 Wh 6 cells. Any suggestion[s]?"
Well, mhcwei, you actually did most of the work already. You know the model as well as the kind of battery inside the laptop. After doing a little digging, I found that you can purchase a replacement battery from Dell itself. It's a 11.1v, 65-WHr, six-cell primary lithium-ion battery that costs $57.87, and it's labeled as compatible with your Inspiron 15R 5537. For reference, WHr (watt hours) equates to the battery capacity, so the more the better. There is also a cheaper, $29.99 model on Amazon. However, we cannot vouch for that battery, because we haven't tested it. It's safer to recommend buying from the company that sold you the laptop. Other laptop companies may have similar systems set up, but if yours doesn't, you should call the manufacturer directly and see if you can coordinate a battery purchase from them. If they don't sell the battery, then ask them about the WHr, amount of cells and voltage of the one you have. Then, type those numbers into Google (or your search engine/online store of choice) and ensure that whichever battery you come across states the exact names of the laptops it's compatible with. From there, check out if the seller is legitimate by looking at seller ratings and reviews.Lastly, if you suspect that your battery isn't going to last you that long, I suggest buying a replacement as soon as you get a new laptop. This way, you won't have to scramble once it's time to make the swap. Anyone considering a new laptop purchase for themselves or as a gift should keep in mind that while speed and design very important, a lot of people care about battery life above all else. After all, there's nothing worse than having your laptop shut down in the middle of an big meeting, while writing an important email or halfway through streaming the latest binge-worthy Netflix series. The good news is that laptops and two-in-one hybrids with 10 hours or more of battery life are now easy to find. That's thanks to improvements in Intel's Core i-series CPUs, as well as power and thermal management improvements in both Windows 10 and MacOSBased on the extensive battery testing conducted in the CNET Labs, these are the 25 PCs with the longest battery life scores over the previous year, from the fall of 2016 through now. This list includes Windows and MacOS laptops, Windows two-in-one hybrids, and Chromebooks running Google's Chrome OS. Not included are Android or iOS tablets.
New additions in this latest update include the Lenovo Yoga 920, which jumps to Intel's latest eighth-gen CPUs, as well as the latest MacBook Air, which received a small CPU update earlier in 2017. Note that Microsoft's recent Surface Book 2 has two separate batteries, one in its tablet half, another in the keyboard base. Together, we've run them for up to 17 hours, but our battery performance for that system has been inconsistent, and we're conducting further tests before considering it for this list. The full collection can be found here, with a breakout of the top laptops and their battery life scores below. Regulators had thought that single lithium battery fires would be knocked down by the flame-retardant gas required in passenger airliner cargo holds. But tests conducted by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration found the suppression systems can’t extinguish a battery fire that combines with other highly flammable material, such as the gas in an aerosol can or cosmetics commonly carried by travelers.“That could then cause an issue that would compromise the aircraft,” said Duane Pfund, international program coordinator at the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, speaking Wednesday at an aviation safety forum in Washington. PHMSA regulates hazardous materials on airliners along with FAA.The research highlights the growing risks of lithium batteries, which are increasingly used to power everything from mobile phones to gaming devices. Bulk shipments of rechargeable lithium batteries have been banned on passenger planes. The findings last year by the FAA prompted the government to advocate that the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization call for a ban on electronic devices larger than a mobile phone in checked bags. That effort fell short, Pfund said.“One way or another, we have to deal with these hazards,” said Scott Schwartz, director of the Air Line Pilots Association’s hazardous goods program. ALPA, the largest pilots union in North America, is holding its annual safety conference.ALPA hasn’t taken a formal position on whether there should be a ban on lithium batteries in checked bags and some fear that many passengers would simply ignore it. At the very least, the union is seeking greater education campaigns so travelers are less likely to place spare batteries and electronics in their checked bags.
Was bekommt der Käufer fürs Geld? Asus K72JQ Battery all-laptopbattery.com We actually think the XPS 13 and XPS 15 have trackpads that rank among the best. Both are glass-smooth and are correctly sized so we rarely, rarely ever have palm rejection issues. While the keyboards look the same, the keys on the smaller XPS 13 are actually larger than the keys on the larger XPS 15. Let’s say that again: The keys on the XPS 13 are 16.1mm wide, while the keys on the XPS 15 are 14.7mm wide. That may not sound like much, but we’ve long felt the keys on the XPS are just a smidge smaller than we’d like. We embrace the slightly larger XPS 13’s keys.Beyond how luxuriously great a 15.6-inch screen feels next to a 13.3-inch, we don’t have to say much about how great it is to slip a tiny, 2.7-pound laptop into your bag rather than a 4.5-pound laptop. The XPS 13, in fact, feels so tiny, it’s hard to remember that just two years ago, this was how big a laptop was with a tiny 11-inch screen. It’s truly amazing that Intel’s 8th-gen Core CPUs have squished quad-core capability into laptops that could only fit a dual-core last year. You know what’s even more amazing? That Intel’s 8th-gen Core CPUs can cram six cores into something you could only get with four cores last year, too. And yeah, that six-core CPU simply smokes in the XPS 15, in ways even the fastest XPS 13 never could. How fast? The XPS 13 with a Core i5 has outperformed comparable laptops outfitted with the Core i7. Compared to the XPS 15, however, It’s just hard to beat the simple math that 6 > 4.That’s not even mentioning the performance of the XPS 13’s Intel UHD 620 graphics vs. the XPS 15’s GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q GPU. This one was over before we wrote the first word. Because battery life is such a critical metric to many, we break out the performance of both laptops, looking at how long they can play a 4K video in airplane mode. The XPS 13 performs valiantly, pushing just over twelve hours of playback before dying. Unfortunately, the XPS 15 easily bests it with just over 14 hours of 4K video playback. How is it possible for a higher-performance (and theoretically power-hungrier) laptop to win this fight? The most obvious reason is the battery size: the XPS 15 has nearly twice the battery capacity, at 96Wh vs. the 51Wh fuel tank in the XPS 13. Even though the XPS 15 has demanding CPU, RAM, and graphics components to feed, video is usually handled by the integrated graphics cores in the CPU. For the most part, the high-performance parts are kicking back and playing dominoes.
Certainly playing a game or a video encode, or anything that works the GPU or CPU cores hard will drain the battery faster, but video playback is actually among the easiest chores a laptop can do today. You know why there are nine Supreme Court justices? To avoid splits like this. Even though we didn’t intend for this to end in a tie, it’s exactly what we have. In the end, your personal needs will guide you. If you’re looking for dominant performance and bang for the buck, the XPS 15 is the one to get. If you value portability and can “settle” for good performance, the XPS 13 is the go-to unit.HTF MI recently introduced new title on “Global 17500 Cylindrical Lithium Ion Battery Market Professional Survey Report 2018” from its database. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with a 6GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, which can, however, be further expanded via a microSD card. The Motorola One Power, on the other hand, has a 6.2-inch IPS LCD display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and HD+ resolution. The device comes with a Snapdragon 636 chipset and has two storage variants — 3GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB storage. Pricing of both these phones is yet to the announced by the company.
Apple A1382 Battery all-laptopbattery.com TVs are expensive, and you might not want to commit to a large piece of tech, which is why portable projectors are a great alternative. Weighing just one pound, Anker's Nebula Capsule sets an impressive standard for portable projectors by packing strong image and sound quality into a soda can-sized piece of hardware. It might not be the smallest portable projector you can buy right now, but unlike other mini projectors that have limited connectivity options, the Nebula Capsule allows for many possible ways to project: HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and screen mirroring. It projects pictures at a resolution of 854 x 480, a size of up to 100 inches, and a brightness of 100 lumens. Of course, larger projectors that boast better resolutions and project at 2,000 to 3,000 lumens have better image quality (and a heftier price tag), but the Nebula Capsule's specs are good for its size and price. I used it in bed to watch TV on my wall and ceiling, and the picture was clear and vibrant in both dim and completely dark environments. With a 360° 5w speaker, the projector's sound is also powerful for its size. It's loud and clear enough to comfortably fill a bedroom and serve a small group of viewers. Depending on your surroundings or room size, you might want to connect it to another speaker for amplification, but I found the strength was more than sufficient for private viewing in my room. The speaker's fan also never interfered with the sound experience — it kept the Nebula Capsule cool while staying quiet and unobtrusive. Its four-hour battery life should last continuously through multiple episodes or a couple movies. Utilizing the Quick Charge technology that has made Anker so effective and popular, the projector recharges quickly and can charge while in use.
There are inevitable compromises to be made for portability, but the Nebula Capsule takes any doubts about projection quality and battery life into stride and makes the best of its small size and light weight. Whether you're at home, traveling, or spending time outdoors, you can stay properly entertained for less than $300 with this small portable projector.Disclosure: This post is brought to you by the Insider Picks team. With SmartThings Tracker, it’s easier to locate a gym bag or backpack lost at school, a laptop case left in the airport lounge, or a pet that might have wandered too far from home. Items can be easily tracked in real time through Samsung’s Android and iOS compatible SmartThings app[2]. Family members can also use SmartThings Tracker to stay connected by sending a location notification to the SmartThings app that alerts the rest of the family of their whereabouts. And, since it is SmartThings-enabled, SmartThings Tracker can be used as an arrival sensor, triggering automations like a connected porch light turning on when the device is within range. Track in more places with LTE-M – LTE-M network technology provides a greater range of signal coverage over Bluetooth, allowing for better tracking accuracy when a SmartThings Tracker is indoors or below street level. Now, people can track and send location updates from more places.
“We lead busy lives. The SmartThings Tracker will help you save time searching for items that aren’t always where you think you left them,” said Chris Penrose, President of IoT at AT&T. “Using our nationwide LTE-M network gives you the ability to track and locate your devices just about anywhere. And as a global leader in Internet of Things solutions, we’re proud to be the first carrier to offer the SmartThings Tracker in the U.S.” The affected battery packs were made in China and were shipped with select HP ProBook 640/645 and 650/655, HP x360 310 G2, HP Envy m6, HP Pavilion x360, HP 11, HP ZBook 17 and HP ZBook Studio G3 notebooks. The laptops were available worldwide from various sellers from December 2015 through December 2017. During the same period, the batteries were also supplied as accessories. Some of these laptops come with user removable batteries, whereas the other feature integrated ones. HP does not provide any exact model numbers of laptops or battery packs that are affected but advises customers who own a potentially affected notebook to visit an appropriate website and download a special utility (basic version, full version) that automatically checks whether or not a particular battery is potentially unsafe. If the HP battery program validation utility finds that the accumulator in use needs to be replaced, it will recommend to update system’s BIOS and enable “Battery Safety Mode” that prevents it from charging. After that, customers should contact HP and order a new battery that will be sent to them free of charge. For laptops with internal batteries, HP will also provide a technician to switch them.Battery recalls are not uncommon these days. This is the second laptop battery recall by HP in the last 12 months. In January 2017, the company recalled 100,000 units. Since in many cases the batteries that explode or catch fire cause injury and/or property damage, HP is taking the issue with very seriously and is trying to avoid any incidents.Microsoft has once again claimed that using its Edge web browser will make your laptop’s battery last longer than if you were using Google Chrome or Firefox. The company has made the claim after releasing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, which includes an updated version of Edge.Microsoft has released a video showing the test, which you can view below. It did something similar last year where, once again, its Edge browser beat the competition. Apple 020-8145-a Battery all-laptopbattery.com Oh, and those carry along battery packs that I once used to recharge my cellphone? Those can be repurposed to charge the Notebook 9 Pro or to act as, essentially, an external battery pack. Throw just one of those deck-of-cards sized packs into your briefcase and you'll have more than enough juice for constant use of the Notebook 9 Pro on the flight between LAX and Heathrow. The upshot is that for both the Note9 and the Notebook 9 Pro, all you need is a single wall adapter with two USB power slots, and two USB-C cables. That's all that needs to go into your travel bag, although I note that you could also throw in a dual USB lighter plug charger in case you wanted to recharge both while driving — in the off-chance that your rental car doesn't have USB outlets. As has become common with most mobile computing devices these days, both the Note9 and the Notebook 9 Pro can be opened with biometrics, with the Note9 adding a ergonomically-placed fingerprint reader on the back as well.Supposely, the Note9 has a great camera, but I'm the wrong guy to ask about that since if I take more than 30 photos a year on my cellphone it is a big deal. Thus, I'll leave reviews of the camera to others. What does impress me is the processor speed of the Note9, which is very fast. My S5 had considerable lag in running some apps or displaying big webpages, and my S7 had noticeable lag, but if the Note 9 has any lag at all it simply isn't noticeable. You click something and — boom — it works, no time to think about it or for random daydreaming. This is important for me when I'm standing in court and there is a question about some document or another, as I can instantly pull up the document on PDF and scroll through to find the important part without uncomfortable delay. Another great thing is the Note9's screen, which at 6.4 inches is pretty big, considering that most tablets have screens that only come in about an inch-and-a-half bigger at 8 inches. What this usually means is that you don't have to squint to see what you're looking for. Younger users may not care as much, but this can be a big deal for older users. At the same time, the Note9 is barely bigger in footprint than the S9, and it easily fits into a front pants pocket or a suit pocket. When I bought the Note9, based on the photos I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to carry it around easily, but that simply has not been the case. Now, it's not the phone that one is going to strap on the bicep when working out, but it is not too big for business users.
The downside to the Note9 is its weight, which isn't onerous, but you simply can't put that big of a screen on something, and insert that big of a battery, and make it light with existing technology. The Note9 comes in two versions, with one offering 128gb of memory and the other offering a whopping 512gb of memory. I went with the 128gb of memory because I just couldn't see ever running out of memory. The reason is that the Note9 has a slot for a MicroSD card up to 512gb for a combined total of 640 gb with the smaller built-in memory! That, my friends, is an absurd amount of memory for the average business user. All of my files for all of my clients in all of their open cases take up just a little over 6gb. The real memory hog is my collection of jazz albums, which runs about 40gb. Unless I suddenly become a video bug and start using my Note9 in place of a video recorder, there simply is no way that I'll ever get even close to maxing out the available memory with or without a MicroSD card inserted (and, yes, I inserted a 128gb card into mine for reasons still yet unknown to me other than I felt that I had to do it). Finally, all the Samsung phones starting with the S8 are water-resistant to about 30 feet, and this includes the Note9. This doesn't mean that I'll be taking my Note9 out with me the next time that I go surfing (though I could), but it is one less thing to worry about, as when recently I was caught outside in a torrential downpour (known locally as a "gullywasher") while visiting my native Oklahoma, or when the guy in seat 17D knocks his coffee all over everything.Other than the new features, the thing that is the most striking about the Notebook 9 Pro over earlier iterations of the Notebook 9 is that the Pro is significantly lighter. I have two earlier (2015) versions of the Notebook 9 Pro, both of which I thought at the time were perfect, but which weighed about 4.5lbs. The new 2018 version weighs about 3.8lbs, so Samsung has somehow managed to shave off nearly a pound in weight. While this may not sound like much in the abstract, the loss of that extra pound makes the new version much comfortable to use, and correspondingly lightens the briefcase. But that is just the start. As mentioned, the new Notebook 9 Pro doesn't require a unique charger for power, but instead can be charged through a USB-C cable. That means that you can both (1) drop about another pound or so in weight for the charger, and (2) eliminate having to carry a rat's nest of wires with you at all times. In fact, if you asked me what the single best feature of the Notebook 9 Pro is, it is a good chance that I will say "Lose the charger". I've been carrying those awful chargers with me for over a quarter-of-a-century, and to not have to carry one now while traveling is simply a little slice of heaven. I honestly can't see ever even considering a laptop that requires a unique charger. As our English cousins might say, "Bollocks to that." Otherwise, the Notebook 9 Pro is simply a very solid laptop. RAM comes in a 256gb SSD drive, which by itself isn't particularly impressive, but then the Notebook 9 Pro also offers a built-in MicroSD card so that one can easily add another 512gb for a total of 768gb. Maybe if I was doing a bunch of video editing I'd want more, but (again) everything that I would want to carry with me comes in well short of 100gbs, so that is far more than enough for me.The screen of the Notebook 9 Pro is big, bright and beautiful, and as mentioned can be turned into a tablet by the simple expedient of flipping the screen over. The keyboard is lit, which can be very useful for folks like me who enjoy sitting outside at night writing articles like this, or when one is taking the red-eye to New York. If there is a serious or even just mildly annoying downside to either the Note9 or the Notebook 9 Pro, I haven't found it yet through I've already racked up quite a few hours with each, including one lengthy business trip to the East Coast. The Note9 is expensive, but then again so is its closest competitor from Apple. As for the Notebook 9 Pro, please don't tell Samsung but I'd have still been happy if I'd had to pay an extra $1,000 for it; it's just that good (and I remember that roughly 20-year period where "the laptop that you want is always $3,000", before cheap consumer goods became common).
