Der Fernseher an sich wird seit Jahren flacher, kompakter und schicker. Das geht vor allem zu Lasten des Tons, denn Klang kann nur mit dem entsprechenden Volumen entstehen. Abhilfe schaffen Soundbars. Die Klangbalken sind kompakte Helfer, um den flachen Fernsehton in wenigen Schritten aufzupeppen. Soundbars sind in der Regel gut einen Meter lang und kommen oftmals mit einem externen Subwoofer, der sich meist kabellos mit dem Lautsprecher koppeln lässt. Für eine Soundbar sollten Sie sich nur dann entscheiden, wenn auch genügend Platz für Bar und Woofer vorhanden ist. Bei Fernsehern mit großem Standfuß sollten Sie unbedingt vorher nachmessen, ob das Deck den TV auch tragen kann. Das größere Gehäusevolumen der Sounddecks führt meist zu satten Bässen. Achten Sie beim Kauf darauf, dass die Smartwatch über einen Sprachassistenten verfügt (alle Apple Watches, alle Samsung-Modelle und Uhren mit Wear OS und Mikrofon) – denn der erspart Nutzern bei den kleinen Displays so manches Gefummel. Damit Ihnen die Uhr auch im Alltag Freude bereitet, sollte man sie nicht allzu häufig laden müssen. Wie bei Smartphones ist das bei Smartwatches ein Problem. Im Test hat COMPUTER BILD die Laufzeiten gemessen. Das Ergebnis: Nur wenige Modelle halten länger als einen Tag durch. Samsungs Gear-Modelle sowie Fitbits Smartwatch gehören zu den Langläufern. Musik über die Smartwatch hören? Das geht inzwischen bei fast allen Modellen in Verbindung mit Bluetooth-Kopfhörern. Googles Wear-OS-Uhren bieten diese Funktion bisher ausschließlich für Google-Play-Music-Nutzer, Apple Watches für Apple-Music-User. HP said on Thursday that it’s commencing a battery recall for the company’s notebooks and mobile workstations, including the HP Probook 64x, HP x360 310 G2, HP Envy m6, and others. The affected laptops were sold worldwide between December 2015 and December 2017. Affected batteries were also sold as accessories during the period.According to HP, the batteries in question “have the potential to overheat” after use. In some cases, that overheating could cause the batteries to become unstable and catch fire. HP also warned that the batteries could be a “burn hazard to customers.”The PC maker didn’t say in a support page posted to its website how many units are affected in the recall. However, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said in its own statement that “about 50,o00” units sold in the U.S. are at risk. Nearly 3,000 more units sold in Canada could also be a problem. According to the CPSC, it has identified eight cases of the batteries “overheating, melting, or charring.” One person suffered a first-degree burn from the battery and three others had property damage totaling $4,500.

HP has created a support page where its laptop owners can see whether their units are at risk of overheating. If owners discover they’re subject to the recall, HP will send them a free battery replacement and help them get it safely swapped out.“HP’s primary concern is for the safety of our customers,” the company wrote on its support page. “HP is proactively notifying customers, and will provide replacement battery services for each verified, eligible battery, at no cost.”At some point in your laptop's life, the battery is going to get worse and worse until it doesn't work anymore. After doing a little digging, I found that you can purchase a replacement battery from Dell itself. It's a 11.1v, 65-WHr, six-cell primary lithium-ion battery that costs $57.87, and it's labeled as compatible with your Inspiron 15R 5537. For reference, WHr (watt hours) equates to the battery capacity, so the more the better.There is also a cheaper, $29.99 model on Amazon. However, we cannot vouch for that battery, because we haven't tested it. It's safer to recommend buying from the company that sold you the laptop.
In mhcwei's case, I went directly to the Dell support site and typed in the laptop's service tag, which you can find on the back/bottom of the chassis (there's also an option to automatically detect your PC). Once you're in, simply go to Parts & Accessories, then to Batteries. In this case, two batteries showed up, so you'd simply pick the battery that's more in your price range.

Other laptop companies may have similar systems set up, but if yours doesn't, you should call the manufacturer directly and see if you can coordinate a battery purchase from them. If they don't sell the battery, then ask them about the WHr, amount of cells and voltage of the one you have.Then, type those numbers into Google (or your search engine/online store of choice) and ensure that whichever battery you come across states the exact names of the laptops it's compatible with. From there, check out if the seller is legitimate by looking at seller ratings and reviews.Lastly, if you suspect that your battery isn't going to last you that long, I suggest buying a replacement as soon as you get a new laptop. New additions in this latest update include the Lenovo Yoga 920, which jumps to Intel's latest eighth-gen CPUs, as well as the latest MacBook Air, which received a small CPU update earlier in 2017. We call on our laptops to do a lot of things, from playing videos to office work to web surfing to games. As a middle ground task that's not too easy and not too intense, the specific test used here streams a private video over Wi-Fi on an endless loop. Note that these scores reflect the specific configurations we tested, and that screen resolution and CPU choice are some of the major factors that affect battery life.

Regulators had thought that single lithium battery fires would be knocked down by the flame-retardant gas required in passenger airliner cargo holds. But tests conducted by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration found the suppression systems can’t extinguish a battery fire that combines with other highly flammable material, such as the gas in an aerosol can or cosmetics commonly carried by travelers.“That could then cause an issue that would compromise the aircraft,” said Duane Pfund, international program coordinator at the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, speaking Wednesday at an aviation safety forum in Washington. PHMSA regulates hazardous materials on airliners along with FAA.The research highlights the growing risks of lithium batteries, which are increasingly used to power everything from mobile phones to gaming devices. Bulk shipments of rechargeable lithium batteries have been banned on passenger planes.

The findings last year by the FAA prompted the government to advocate that the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization call for a ban on electronic devices larger than a mobile phone in checked bags. That effort fell short, Pfund said.“One way or another, we have to deal with these hazards,” said Scott Schwartz, director of the Air Line Pilots Association’s hazardous goods program. ALPA, the largest pilots union in North America, is holding its annual safety conference.ALPA hasn’t taken a formal position on whether there should be a ban on lithium batteries in checked bags and some fear that many passengers would simply ignore it. At the very least, the union is seeking greater education campaigns so travelers are less likely to place spare batteries and electronics in their checked bags.

While it’s a good idea to use any included utilities or just follow instructions specific to your laptop, you can also perform battery calibration without any specialized tools. The basic process is simple:Let the battery rest for at least two hours, leaving the computer plugged in. This will ensure that the battery is cool and not still hot from the charging process. You’re free to use your computer normally while it’s plugged in, but be sure it doesn’t get too hot. You want it to cool down.

Go into your computer’s power management settings and set it to automatically hibernate at 5% battery. To find these options, head to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Look under the “Battery” category for the “Critical battery action” and “Critical battery level” options. (If you can’t set it to 5%, just set it as low as you can—for example, on one of our PCs, we couldn’t set these options below 7% battery.)

Pull the power plug and leave your laptop running and discharging until it automatically hibernates. You can keep using your computer normally while this happens.

NOTE: If you want to calibrate the battery while you aren’t using the computer, be sure your computer isn’t set to automatically sleep, hibernate, or turn its display off while idle. If your computer automatically enters power-saving mode while you’re away, it will save power and won’t discharge properly. To find these options, head to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings.Allow your computer to sit for five hours or so after it automatically hibernates or shuts down.

Plug your computer back into the outlet and charge it all the way back up to 100%. You can keep using your computer normally while it charges.

Ensure any power management settings are set to their normal values. For example, you probably want your computer to automatically power off the display and then go to sleep when you’re not using it to save battery power. You can change these settings while the computer charges.

Your laptop should now be reporting a more accurate amount of battery life, sparing you any surprise shutdowns and giving you a better idea of how much battery power you have at any given time.The key to calibration is allowing the battery to run from 100% to almost empty, then charging it all the way up to 100% again, which may not happen in normal use. Once you’ve gone through this full charge cycle, the battery will know how much juice it has and report more accurate readings.The clamshell laptop design hasn't changed much over the years, which is why I was cautiously optimistic when the Asus ZenBook S landed on my desk. The Ultrabook's elevated hinge is truly unique, and makes the laptop's keyboard a pleasure to type on. But what really stands out about the ZenBook S (starting at $1,199, $1,499 as tested) is its gorgeous display and remarkably thin and lightweight design. Despite having below-average battery life, the ZenBook S is one of the best premium laptops for your money.

On the lid is a gold Asus logo in the center of the company's signature texture of concentric circles. Under the lid is a sparkling blue deck and a keyboard with gold text. It's worth noting that the lid and deck looked black in our dim office, and I could make out shades of blue only in direct sunlight. With the display, Asus struck the perfect balance of aesthetics and practicality. Although the bezels are narrow, there's still enough space above the screen for a webcam. The ZenBook S belongs in an office environment as much as it does in an exorbitantly priced Louis Vuitton bag.The ZenBook S' elevated hinge is even more striking than the laptop's gorgeous looks. The lid wraps around to the bottom of the chassis, so when the laptop is opened, the back edge rotates below the deck, elevating it off the ground.

Asus ZenBook S UX391UA reviewWith the back of the deck raised, the keyboard tilts upward at a 5.5-degree angle. According to Asus, the design offers three benefits: a more comfortable typing experience, better heat management and improved sound quality. Unfortunately, the ZenBook S didn't meet all of these claims in our testing. One drawback with the hinge is that a large gap forms between the deck and the display, forming a sanctuary for dust and dirt. The hinge felt sturdy in our testing and the display wobbled only slightly when I tapped hard on the touch screen. While its unique design may suggest the ZenBook S is a convertible 2-in-1, the lid folds back 145 degrees.

The ZenBook S is remarkably compact and lightweight. It's so small that my colleague glanced at it and assumed it was a 12-inch laptop. At 12.2 x 8.4 x 0.5 inches, the ZenBook S is thinner but wider than the 13-inch MacBook Pro (12 x 8.4 x 0.6 inches) and the Huawei MateBook X Pro (12 x 8.5 x 0.6 inches). The Dell XPS 13 is even more compact at 12 x 7.9 x 0.5 inches. Incredibly, the ZenBook S weighs less than its competitors at 2.4 pounds.As expected for a system so slim, the ZenBook S is short on ports. On the right side are two Thunderbolt 3 connections for charging, fast data transfer, and connecting to displays or graphics docks.Asus ZenBook S UX391UA reviewOn the left side is a single USB 3.1 Type-C port and LED indicators for battery life and power. The laptop comes with a matching carrying sleeve, a USB-C-to-USB-A dongle, and a USB-C-to-HDMI cable.

The 3,840 x 2,160-pixel display on the ZenBook S is brilliant, although it's not quite as gorgeous as other top panels we've tested. When I watched a 1080p trailer of the upcoming Predator film, I could see individual strands of hair in Boyd Holbrook's beard, and the clarity of the extraterrestrial intruder made it especially terrifying.Asus ZenBook S UX391UA reviewI was blown away by the display's vibrancy. When I watched a trailer for the upcoming spy comedy, Johnny English Strikes Again, the glossy red paint on Rowan Atkinson's classy Aston Martin was richly saturated. At a bar scene, Atkinson's light blue suit popped against the contrasting yellow lights of the posh venue. White balance is also excellent, and the display's vivid colors jumped off the clean background of my favorite news sites.

The ZenBook S display did well in our lab tests, but it was outperformed by competing laptops. Asus' notebook can reproduce 116.4 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is above the premium laptop category average (111 percent). Denn diese versorgen gleich mehrere Endgeräte auf einmal mit Internet über das Mobilfunknetz. „Computer Bild“ hat verschiedene LTE- und UMTS-Hotspots getestet.Ähnlich wie beim Smartphone landet die SIM-Karte bei vielen mobilen Router in einem Fach unter dem Akku oder in einer Schublade am Gehäuserand. Nervig: Jedes Testgerät verlangte im Testlauf nach einer Micro-SIM-Karte, ein Adapter für die kleinere (und bei teuren Handys gängige) Nano-SIM-Karte gehörte nur beim TP-Link M7310 zum Lieferumfang.Auch bei der Einrichtung trennte sich im Test die Spreu vom Weizen: Der Skyroam Solis verbindet sich automatisch mit dem Mobilfunknetz, bei der Netgear Aircard 810 müssen Nutzer zusätzlich einen passenden Access Point auswählen.

Das hat allerdings auch seinen Preis: Die Aircard 810 ist deutlich teurer als Konkurrenzgeräte.Gut und günstig: Der TP-Link M7310 überzeugt trotz seines geringen Preises mit einer ausreichenden Auswahl an Funktionen und ordentlicher Leistung bei WLAN und LTE. Mengenbegrenzungen für Privathaushalte gibt es keine, Kosten entstehen auch nicht. 7494 Tonnen ausrangierte „Informations- und Kommunikationsgeräte“ sind 2013 auf diesem Weg bei der BSR gelandet, in den Jahren zuvor waren es noch mehr.

Was passiert mit all dem Zeug? Die BSR sortiert den Schrott zunächst grob nach Warengruppen vor. Für alles Weitere sind eigentlich die Hersteller zuständig. Denn jedes Unternehmen, das in Deutschland Elektronikgeräte auf den Markt bringt, muss umgekehrt auch eine entsprechende Menge an Schrott entsorgen. Samsung oder Apple oder Toshiba machen das nicht selbst, sondern beauftragen zertifizierte ortsansässige Entsorgungsunternehmen. Die holen den vorsortierten Schrott bei der BSR ab. In Berlin befinden sich zwei große Anlagen zur Erstbehandlung von Elektroaltgeräten, Bral und Remondis heißen die Unternehmen. Außerdem gibt es etliche Behindertenwerkstätten, die sich auf Elektronikrecycling spezialisiert haben. Per Hand werden die Geräte dort aufgeschraubt und zerlegt.

Mehr allerdings passiert in Berlin nicht. Wenn die Wertstoffbestandteile separiert sind, verlassen sie die Stadt, um anderswo geschreddert, verbrannt oder eingeschmolzen zu werden. Die einzelnen Wertstoffgruppen landen beim nächsten spezialisierten Recycler, von dort aus geht es vielleicht noch zur übernächsten oder überübernächsten Anlage. „Ab dem dritten oder vierten Glied in der Kette wird es mit der Transparenz schwierig“, sagt Holzmann von der Deutschen Umwelthilfe. „Da kann sich die Spur schon mal verlieren.“ Ein Rest Unsicherheit bleibt also.

Was tun? Vielleicht doch lieber die ganze Kiste voller E-Schrott vor den Toren der BSR-Sammelstellen großherzig verschenken? Da stehen doch immer diese Leute, die angeblich noch viel Gutes mit den alten Handys und PCs vorhaben. BSR-Sprecher Thomas Klöckner warnt ausdrücklich davor, den Geschichten der illegalen Sammler Glauben zu schenken. „Damit tut man der Umwelt definitiv keinen Gefallen. Vieles wird direkt vor Ort ausgeschlachtet, der Rest landet oft im Gebüsch.“ Was noch verkäuflich ist, wird ins Ausland geschafft. Ob die Daten auf den Geräten vorher gelöscht werden, ist mehr als fraglich. In manchen Städten steht deshalb mittlerweile privater Wachschutz vor städtischen Sammelstellen. In Berlin ist das Problem derart ausgeufert, dass die BSR kürzlich eine Aufklärungskampagne gemeinsam mit der Polizei gestartet hat. Denn die illegalen Sammler greifen allein in der Hauptstadt jährlich schätzungsweise 3000 Tonnen Elektroschrott aus Privathaushalten ab – und wo der am Ende landet, weiß niemand.

Die Deutsche Umwelthilfe fordert deshalb, dass dem Verbraucher die Rückgabe noch leichter gemacht werden muss. Eine entsprechende Gesetzesnovelle, die Bundesumweltministerin Barbara Hendricks kürzlich vorgelegt hat, geht dem Verein nicht weit genug. Danach wären künftig Elektronikmärkte ab einer Verkaufsfläche von 400 Quadratmetern verpflichtet, beim Verkauf neuer Geräte die alten zurückzunehmen. Die Flächenvorgabe sei viel zu hoch, kritisiert Holzmann. Die meisten Einzelhändler wären damit von der Rückgabepflicht ausgenommen. „Außerdem fordern wir, dass der ReUse, also die Wiederverwendung, noch mehr gestärkt werden soll.“ Denn ein beachtlicher Teil der weggeworfenen Geräte ist nicht mal kaputt. Und selbst wenn das alte Handy in Deutschland mittlerweile wertlos erscheint, kann es oft in andere Teile der Welt exportiert und dort noch etliche Jahre weiter benutzt werden. Auch solche Zweitverwertungsschleifen verbessern die Ökobilanz.

Doch damit überhaupt die Chance zur Wiederverwendung besteht, muss von Anfang an vorsichtig und kleinteilig gesammelt werden. Nicht in großen Containern, nicht alles wild durcheinander. Der Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz (BUND) fordert, folgenden Satz in den Gesetzestext aufzunehmen: „Die Behältnisse müssen so befüllt werden können, dass die Altgeräte nicht beschädigt werden.“ Schwungvolles Reinschmeißen, festes Zusammenpressen – das hält kein empfindliches Smartphone aus. Schon gar nicht, wenn Fernseher und Faxe im gleichen Container landen.

Most laptops with displays 14 inches and larger weigh in over four pounds with smaller models weighing between three and four pounds. When you’re looking at the budget end of the laptop market, don’t expect great battery life. There are a couple of tradeoffs. The display isn’t great, with a resolution of only 1,366 x 768, and it comes with just 2GB of RAM, an Intel Celeron N4000 processor and a 64GB eMMC hard drive. Plus, it gets an impressive 11 hours of battery life.The Chromebook 3 is powered by an Intel Celeron Processor N3060 and 4 GB Memory, which is plenty for web-based Chrome OS apps. Though, you’ll have to pick and choose your files to work on offline, due to its puny 16GB SSD. If you need more storage, the Chromebook 3 has a variety of ports, with one USB 2.0, one USB 3.0 and a microSD card slot. And you can easily attach a monitor with its full-size HDMI port.Whether in a laptop or a smartphone, there’s a good chance that you’re using several lithium-ion batteries every day. Since they hit the market in the 1990s, these rechargeable batteries have helped make our computers and devices portable and, increasingly, our vehicles too.

Toshiba describes the Satellite U920T as having a “precious silver finish with brown woven texture... on silver metal base.” It’s nicely understated and the texturing feels good in the hand being more grippy on the outer shell. Despite its cogs and struts at the back, the overall impression is that it’s fairly sturdy and will take the knocks.Indeed, even the slightest knocks can be a problem with Windows 8 convertibles, as screens all too easily flip between portrait to landscape modes. In this respect, without doubt, the screen orientation detection on the Toshiba Satellite U920T is the best I’ve encountered. There is a momentary pause, which seems quite deliberate, as if it’s determining if you really intend to stay in this position. It works for me and as far as avoiding toe-curling frustration goes, it gets my vote on this refinement alone.If only the keyboard could match this touch of class. Admittedly, those broad screen borders give rise to a larger base, which provides for more space for the keyboard. So this isn’t too cramped and there’s room enough for a decent sized trackpad. However, those backlit tile keys feel so lifeless. The spacebar is the worst culprit here, having so little travel that it’s hard to ascertain if you've pressed it hard enough. In the end, I just had to consciously dig in more to avoid words running into each other.

Sure, you do get used to it eventually, but you might want to try this out first to see if it bothers you, especially as there’s some flexing as you get toward the middle of the keyboard. On the plus side, there are some useful shortcut keys along the top including media transport controls and decent sized navigation keys too.The Toshiba Satellite U920T boots to the login screen from cold in nine seconds. Tests with PCMark 7 notched up a balanced settings score of 3189 and when set up for performance, this shot up to 3816. The benefits of having an SSD on-board helps the numbers here and it’s not such a bad score compared to over 4700 from the Core i7 Sony Vaio Duo. It doesn’t feel sluggish either, although some Flash heavy web pages could take their time to show.There’s only the HD 4000 Intel integrated GPU on this model which will suffice for most tasks, but this is no gaming machine. However, it does run Linux with an Ubuntu 12.10 Live CD working with the Wi-Fi but not the accelerometer. The touchscreen allows mouse movement, but taps do not fire up applications nor open folders. The battery life with PowerMark shows how a lower powered CPU can really deliver advantages when it comes to the duration game. Here it managed 2hrs 51mins which in real world use is easily double that.

Occasionally, the touchscreen would need repeated swipes – particularly for closing apps – but showed no obvious latency issues. Video playback was smooth and while not exactly dazzlingly bright, it was certainly sufficient although tablet mode in direct sunlight could prove to be a challenge.As for audio, the speakers are in the base at the front and don’t make much of an impression until you fire up the SRS Premium Sound 3D control panel. SRS has been performing miracles with small speakers for decades now and this software makes a huge difference to the overall output. It certainly sounds louder, but you can get those tweaks from VLC Player. The fun starts when you click on the Advanced section, as it takes you beyond the presets for music, movies and 3D so you can tweak for improved dialogue intelligibility and bass enhancement, among other things. If you’re hooked up to external speakers or headphones, there are options for these too.

The Toshiba Satellite U920T is a very likable convertible Ultrabook, although it took me a while to realise why. The reason, I'd say, is that it doesn't come across as some toy-like novelty item – it errs more on the sensible side. Even so, I still want to tilt the screen forward at times and its fold flat and slide convertible mechanism must be obeyed, which can be a little bothersome for speedy getaways. Still, this Ultrabook feels reassuringly solid and has a battery life that should get you through the day. Some will bemoan the lack of a full HD screen though, which leads to the biggest worry: the price. It's something that dogs all convertible Ultrabooks and the state of the premium portable PC market.

A momentous moment: Seagate will end production of its Momentus 7,200rpm 2.5in disk-only drives.The storage giant will stop making the gear by the end of this year to focus on drives mixed with flash memory, although it will continue to pump out 5,400rpm disks for cheap laptops.“We are going stop building our notebook 7,200rpm hard disk drives at the end of 2013,” David Burks, Seagate's director of marketing and product management, told X-bit Labs.WD has its 10k Velociraptor plus its ordinary 5,400rpm Scorpio Blues and the Black hybrid drive with a 24GB NAND cache added to a 500GB or 1TB drive spinning at 7,200rpm. HGST has 5,400rpm and 7,200rpm Travelstars but no flash hybrids.Toshiba has MK and MQ notebook drives spinning at 5,400rpm and 7,200rpm: the MQ1ABD-H is its first 5,400rpm hybrid drive that can store 750GB or 1TB, and has 8GB of NAND.The drive suppliers reckon the notebook storage market is trifurcating into fast, fat and, er, something in between.

High-performance and svelte notebooks need solid-state disks. Fat notebooks need relatively big disks of 750GB to 1TB, or more. In-between machines need both attributes: speed and capacity, and one way to do that is with a slug of flash added to a pedestrian 5,400rpm disk drive or a nippier 7,200rpm model.We expect Seagate to turn the Momentus 5.4k line into a hybrid storing 750GB, 1TB or more, with a fat flash cache of 16GB to 24GB. It could be branded a Momentus 5400 XT. A better bet is that the existing Momentus XT is going to get a third-generation refresh with a fatter flash cache, up from the current 8GB.It has been well over two years years since Google released its first Chromebook, the CR-48, and set off on a quest to convince the world of the benefits of living in the browser. Last week, the company unveiled its latest attempt to seduce the public – the luxury touchscreen Chromebook Pixel – and gave The Reg a $1,449 LTE-equipped version to try out.We Silicon Valley press folks are a surly lot, not given to displays of emotion. But when that astronomical Pixel price was announced at Google's roll-out event, there was a lot of excited shuffling about in the press-conference room as we hacks maneuvered to get our questions in.

The biggest of those questions: since Chrome OS has been concentrating on the low-end of the market and hanging out with the kids in education, why is the Pixel leapfrogging into the very big – and pricey – leagues?At this kind of money, Google is going directly at Intel-flogged Ultrabooks and Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro and Air – and they might just succeed in prying away some users of those laptops. After a week of lugging the Pixel around, using it for day-to-day work and trying it out in a variety of locales, we prefer its hardware to an idealized Ultrabook, the MacBook Pro, and in some ways the Air, in terms of design, build-quality, and specifications.But that's far from the whole story, as "as any fule kno," as the infamous Nigel Molesworth would say.The Pixel has a distinctive angular design with a 16.1mm-thin aluminum case that's unadorned with prominent logos or even port icons; there's just the word Chrome etched on the hinge and behind the keyboard as a reminder of who makes this device.

At 3.35 pounds and 297.7-by-224.6 millimeters in depth and width, it's on the larger and heavier side, but its build quality is superb. There's no give or twisting in the screen, and the laptop sits firmly on either desk or knees upon its little pointy feet.Inside, our test unit had a 1.8GHz dual-core Intel 3rd-Generation ("Ivy Bridge") Core i5 processor with HD 4000 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB SSD. Buyers of the $1,299 Wi-Fi-only version, however, get only 32GB to play with. Google says this paltry internal storage space doesn't matter, however, because Mountain View gives users 1TB of cloud storage for three years. Users who prefer local storage, however, might disagree.For external hookups, there are two USB 2.0 ports on the left of the case, along with a power port, a 3.5mm combination headphone and microphone jack, and a Mini-DisplayPort connector that can run a 30-inch monitor; a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor is also included.

Denn auf der anstehenden Consumer Electronics Show, der größen Konsumerelektronikmesse der Welt, werden wir zwei Versionen des Notebook 9 und das Notebook 9 Pen zu sehen bekommen.

Das Notebook 9 Pen ist ein 13-Zoll-Convertible. Es hat also einen Touchscreen, der sich um 360 Grad umklappen lässt. Damit wird das Notebook zum Tablet. Im Gehäuse des Geräts ist in einem Schacht darüber hinaus auch Samsungs Stylus S Pen untergebracht, mit dem Nutzer dann auf dem Display schreiben und zeichnen könne. Der Akku hat eine Kapazität von 39 Wh, der Arbeitsspeicher ist bis zu 16 GB groß und als Prozessor ist ein Intel-Core der achten Generation vorgesehen. Als interner Speicher wird eine SSD mit 512 GB zur Verfügung stehen. Das Gewicht wird bei ziemlich genau einem Kilogramm liegen.

Das Notebook 9 ist kein 2-in-1 Gerät, sondern ein reines Notebook – oder vielmehr ein Ultrabook. Abgesehen von der Display-Größe und der Grafikkarte sind die beiden angekündigten Varianten dieses Modells nahezu baugleich. So sollen beide bis zu 16 GB RAM und eine bis zu 1 TB große SSD besitzen. Als Prozessor stehen Intel-Core-i5- und Intel-Core-i7-Prozessoren der achten Generation zur Auswahl. Der Akku ist mit einer Kapazität von 75 Wh geradezu gigantisch. Und während die Version mit 13,3-Zoll-Bildschirm mit der im Prozessor-Modul integrierten GPU vorlieb nehmen muss, hat Samsung im 15-Zoll-Modell noch eine GeForce MX150 von NVIDIA verbaut. Das Gewicht der größeren Variante ist dann mit circa 1,3 Kilogramm auch gar nicht mehr so niedrig, wenn auch weit davon entfernt, besonders hoch zu sein.

Wer ein Smartphone, Tablet oder Notebook besitzt, kennt das Problem: Meist ruft einmal am Tag die Steckdose. Die Hersteller arbeiten seit Jahren an einer Lösung. Manch einer verbaut größere Akkus und optimiert die Software, andere investieren viel Geld in die Forschung, um Schnellladeverfahren zu verfeinern, effizientere Akkus oder eine gänzlich andere Technik zu entwickeln. Wissenschaftler der University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan) und der Cornell University (Ithaca, New York) haben ein Material erfunden, mit dem Smartphones & Co. nicht Tage, sondern sogar bis zu drei Monate mit einer Ladung auskommen sollen.
Die Forscher werkeln seit einigen Jahren an dem Stoff, den sie magnoelektrisches Multimetall – oder auch Multiferroika – nennen. Im Herbst 2016 erschien eine Studie im Wissenschaftsmagazin „Nature“, die die Funktionsweise beschreibt. Anders als bei aktuellen Akkus fließt die Elektrizität nicht ununterbrochen, sondern in Impulsen. Auf diese Weise verbrauchen Smartphones und Notebooks weniger Strom. Das soll bis zu 100-mal weniger Energie verbrauchen. Der Akku besteht aus mehreren Schichten, zwischen denen sich ein magnetischer Film bildet. Mittels kleiner elektrischer Impulse wechselt die Ladung zwischen positiv und negativ. So entsteht der Stromfluss.

Doch der Weg zum Akku der Zukunft ist lang und beschwerlich, immer wieder tauchen Probleme auf. Eins, das bei der Produktion auftauchte, haben die Forscher inzwischen gelöst: Anfangs gelang die Herstellung nur bei niedrigen Temperaturen unter -250 °F – mittlerweile ist das bei Raumtemperatur möglich. Bis die Technik allerdings den Weg in Smartphones & Co. findet, dauert es laut den Wissenschaftlern noch mehrere Jahre. Bis dahin führt am täglichen Laden kein Weg vorbei. Mit ein paar Kniffen verlängern Sie aber schon heute die Akkulaufzeit.
Sicherheitsrückrufe sind nicht ungewöhnlich, wenn es um Elektronik geht. Geräte, deren Akkus nicht einwandfrei funktionieren, werden häufig reklamiert. Manchmal nehmen Hersteller die Geräte sogar zurück, bevor eine tatsächliche Störung auftritt.

HP muss nicht das erste Mal Geräte zurückrufen. Vor etwa zwei Jahren nahm der Hersteller HP Laptops wegen überhitzenden Netzkabeln zurück. Diese Woche hat der Hersteller eine weitere Rückrufaktion gestartet. Betroffen ist eine Reihe von Laptops, die zwischen März 2013 und August 2015 verkauft wurden. Es besteht offenbar die Gefahr, dass die eingesetzten Akkus in den Laptops “überhitzen, Feuer verursachen und dann verbrennen” können.HP-Nutzer sollten die Laptop-Modellnummer und den Akku-Barcode mit den oben aufgelisteten Modellen abgleichen. Alternativ können sich Nutzer ein Tool herunterladen, das eine automatische Überprüfung durchführt.Zusätzlich zu den aufgelisteten Laptops könnten auch 38 weitere HP- und Compaq-Modelle betroffen sein. Diese haben vom Hersteller nicht automatisch einen risikobehafteten Akku bekommen. Allerdings gleichen sie den betroffenen Modellen im Aufbau, sodass nachträglich eine fehlerhafte Batterie installiert werden konnte.

HP rät davon ab, die oben aufgelisteten Akkus weiter zu nutzen. Bis der Ersatz-Akku ausgeliefert wird, sollten die Laptops über eine externe Stromquelle betrieben werden.Notebooks sind aus dem heutigen Leben nur noch schwer wegzudenken. Spätestens seit der Ultrabook-Revolution, die noch einmal deutlich flachere und kompaktere Geräte hervorgebracht hat, gibt es keinen wirklichen Grund mehr, ohne mobilen Rechner aus dem Haus zu gehen. Doch gerade bei der mobilen Verwendung kommt es auf einen leistungsfähigen Akku und eine gute Konfiguration des Notebooks an, damit möglichst lange unabhängig vom Stromnetz gearbeitet werden kann. Sicher, für gemütliches Surfen im Internet oder das Verfassen kurzer E-Mails eignen sich Tablet-Computer oft besser, doch sobald es um die Arbeit mit längeren Texten oder gar Tabellenkalkulationen geht, ist ein vollwertiges Notebook klar im Vorteil.

Bei einem Notebookakku müssen generell zwei Dinge unterschieden werden: Von der Laufzeit des Gerätes ist die Rede, wenn die Betriebsdauer gemeint ist, die das Gerät mit einer Akkuladung unabhängig vom Stromnetz verwendet werden kann, bevor es wieder aufgeladen werden muss. Der Begriff der Akkulebensdauer zielt hingegen auf den gesamten Lebenszyklus des Akkus ab. Im Laufe der Zeit verlieren die Akkuzellen mit jedem Ladezyklus an Kapazität, bis es zu typischen Symptomen wie extrem verkürzten, netzunabhängigen Laufzeiten oder dem vollständigen Defekt des Akkus kommt und sich das Notebook ohne Hilfe der Steckdose nicht mehr zum Leben erwachen lässt.Lenovo Notebook Akku 68+Laufzeit und Lebensdauer eines Notebookakkus stehen sich dabei in gewisser Weise gegenüber und es gilt einen persönlichen Kompromiss zu finden. Mit den folgenden Tipps gelingt das ganz einfach.

Die restlichen Messwerte können sich ebenfalls sehen lassen. Vor allem der hohe Kontrast führt zu einem sehr plastischen Bild und subjektiv gibt es überhaupt nichts zu bemängeln. Unser Messgerät kann jedoch PWM feststellen, sobald die Helligkeit bei 50 % oder weniger liegt. Allerdings ist die Frequenz mit über 21 kHz extrem hoch und sollte zu keinen großen Einschränkungen führen.Microsoft kalibriert jedes Surface Book 2 individuell und die durchschnittlichen DeltaE-2000-Abweichungen gegenüber der sRGB-Referenz fallen bereits im Werkszustand sehr ordentlich aus. Vor allem die Graustufendarstellung weiß zu überzeugen, bei den Farben gibt es aber noch Verbesserungspotenzial. Auch hier konnte das kleinere Surface Book 2 besser abschneiden.

Neben dem voreingestellten Profil bietet das Surface Book 2 15 noch zwei weitere Profile - sRGB und Verbessert. Besonders mit dem Profil sRGB ermitteln wir sehr gute Ergebnisse, die eine Kalibrierung praktisch überflüssig machen. Das Profil steht werksseitig zur Verfügung, weshalb wir auch die Werte in der Datenbank angepasst haben. Das Profil "Verbessert" bietet kräftigere und gesättigtere Farben, die aber ungenauer sind.Die grundlegende Ausstattung des Surface Book 2 15 ist abgesehen von der SSD-Kapazität immer identisch. Die Kombination aus modernem ULV-Quad-Core, 16 GB RAM und starker GeForce GTX 1060 eignet sich für sehr viele Anwendungsszenarien, angefangen beim Surfen im Internet, dem Streamen von hochauflösenden Videos, der Bearbeitung von Videos oder auch dem Spielen von aktuellen Titeln.

Wie wir bereits beim kleinen Surface Book 2 gesehen haben, hat der neue Windows Leistungsregler (Linksklick auf das Akkusymbol in der Taskleiste) einen erheblichen Einfluss auf die Leistung und vor allem die Lautstärke der Lüfter. Wir werden in den nachfolgenden Sektionen daher stärker auf die jeweiligen Auswirkungen der drei Betriebsmodi (Empfohlen, Bessere Leistung & Beste Leistung) eingehen und die zugehörigen dB-Werte angeben.Das Microsoft Surface Book 2 15 ist ausschließlich mit dem aktuellen Kaby-Lake-R-Prozessor Core i7-8650U ausgestattet, der einen Takt von maximal 4,2 GHz erreicht. Die vier Kerne unterstützen Hyperthreading und können 8 Threads gleichzeitig bearbeiten. Daher haben die neuen ULV-Quad-Cores einen deutlichen Vorteil gegenüber den alten Zweikernmodellen (z. Prinzipiell handelt es sich um einen 15-Watt-Chip, allerdings hebt Microsoft den dauerhaften Verbrauch auf 25 Watt (kurzfristig sogar 35 Watt) an. Soweit entspricht das Testgerät also dem kleineren Surface Book 2 13. Allerdings war der Prozessor im kleinen Modell passiv gekühlt, während das größere 15-Zoll-Modell einen kleinen Lüfter verwendet.Theoretisch sollte die Leistungsentfaltung also besser sein. Maximal sehen wir im ersten Durchlauf 675 Punkte und befinden uns damit auf dem Niveau des kleineren Modells. Je nach Energieeinstellung unterscheidet sich das Ergebnis leicht, doch es gibt einen deutlicheren Unterschied bei der Lüfterlautstärke. Während der Lüfter mit der Einstellung Empfohlen (29,8 dB(A)) kaum zu hören ist, ist er in den beiden anderen Settings schon lauter (31,4 bzw. 33,2 dB(A)). Das hört sich erst mal nicht nach viel an, doch der kleine Lüfter ist recht hochfrequent und dadurch subjektiv störender.

Interessant wird es in unserer Cinebench R15 Multi-Schleife, die den Benchmark 50 Mal nacheinander ausführt. Mit der Einstellung Beste Leistung ist das anfängliche Ergebnis tatsächlich das Beste, allerdings bricht die Leistung dann schneller ein im Vergleich mit der Einstellung Bessere Leistung. Im Verlauf des Tests nähern sich die beiden aber wieder an und mit der Einstellung Beste Leistung erzielt man auch etwas höhere Ergebnisse, auch wenn der Vorsprung nur minimal ist. In dem Modus Empfohlen arbeitet der Prozessor dagegen deutlich konservativer, dafür aber auch gleichmäßiger und leiser.Damit schneidet das größere Surface Book 2 zwar besser ab als sein kleiner Bruder, bei dem sich das Ergebnis auf rund 520 Punkte einpendelte, doch wir hätten ehrlich gesagt etwas mehr von der aktiven Kühlung erwartet. Der durchschnittliche Verbrauch liegt nur etwa 5 Watt höher und selbst das neue und extrem dünne Dell XPS 13 mit dem vermeintlich langsameren Core i5-8250U erreicht nach 50 Durchläufen einige Punkte mehr.

Im Akkubetrieb wird die CPU-Leistung nicht reduziert. Weitere Benchmark-Ergebnisse für den Core i7-8650U stehen in unserer Techniksektion zur Verfügung.Microsoft stattet das Surface Book 2 mit schnellen NVMe-SSDs aus. Wie schon im kleinen Modell verwendet unser Testgerät die 256-GB-Version der Samsung PM961. Die Leistung beim Lesen ist auch exzellent, allerdings gibt es nach wie vor eine Limitierung der Schreibleistung bei rund 330 MB/s. Das macht sich auch in der Praxis bemerkbar, denn große Dateien werden nur mit etwas 320 MB/s auf das Gerät kopiert. In Verbindung mit unserer externen Samsung SSD T3 liegen die Transferraten normalerweise bei 389-390 MB/s.

Da Benchmarks oftmals Probleme mit den schnellen NVMe-Laufwerken haben, greifen wir in der Regel auf den NVMe-Treiber von Samsung zurück. Eigentlich hilft das auch, doch in diesem Fall blieb die Begrenzung vorhanden. Das Tool AS SSD brachte überhaupt keine brauchbaren Ergebnisse vor. Da die Leistung beim Lesen jedoch normal ausfällt, dürfte es sich nur um ein Software-Problem handeln. Von den 256 GB stehen nach der ersten Inbetriebnahme 204 GB zur freien Verfügung.Bei der Ankündigung des Surface Book 2 15 hat Microsoft viele Leute mit der Wahl der Grafikkarte überrascht, denn die GeForce GTX 1060 mit 6 GB GDDR5-VRAM findet man eigentlich nur in ausgewachsenen Gaming-Laptops. Alle technischen Daten der GeForce GTX 1060 sind in unserer Techniksektion verfügbar.

In den Benchmarks zeigt sich dann, dass die Leistung der GTX 1060 zwar in Ordnung ist, doch unsere durchschnittlichen Werte aller getesteten Modelle mit dieser GPU liegen noch einige Prozentpunkte höher. Aufgrund der Beschränkung bei der Stromversorgung kann die GTX 1060 ihr volles Potenzial also nicht ausnutzen. Hier muss man sich ganz klar fragen, warum Microsoft nicht direkt zur Max-Q-Variante der GTX 1060 gegriffen. Diese ist praktisch kaum langsamer, hat dafür aber Vorteile beim Verbrauch und auch der Wärmeentwicklung.Den Fire-Strike-Stresstest absolviert das Surface Book 2 erfolgreich, doch im anspruchsvolleren Time-Spy-Stresstest werden die erforderlichen 97 % mit rund 95 % knapp verpasst. Zudem hat sich die Akkukapazität während der Time-Spy-Varainte um 5 % reduziert.

Wir haben den Fire-Strike-Benchmark dann auch noch mit den anderen Energieprofilen durchgeführt. Zwischen den beiden Einstellungen Beste Leistung und Bessere Leistung gibt es praktisch keinen Unterschied. Erst mit der Einstellungen Empfohlen wird die Leistung der Grafikkate reduziert; im Akkubterieb ist die Situation ähnlich.Wir werden natürlich eine Reihe von modernen Spielen mit dem Surface Book 2 15 testen, doch am Beispiel von Witcher 3 (Ultra-Setting) wollen wir uns einmal genauer ansehen, welche Auswirkungen die drei verschiedenen Leistungsprofile auf die Framerate, die Temperaturen, die Lautstärke und auch den Stromverbrauch haben. Die Leistung unterscheidet sich zwar, doch die Abstände sind sehr gering. Ein Blick in unsere Datenbank zeigt, dass sich das beste Ergebnis am unteren Ende der Leistungsskala für eine GTX 1060 bewegt und vermutlich durch die Verbrauchslimitierung begrenzt wird.

Only 6.9mm front-to-back and weighing a feather-light 495g, the Tablet Z ticks the thin’n’light boxes with a vengeance. NFC ditto, added to allow data exchanged with the Xperia Z smartphone. The Japanese models are LTE-enabled, so fingers crossed for a European 4G version, though there's no sign of one just yet.Being a Sony, the flat-sized Xperia Z gives you a very nice 8Mp camera at the back, while the 10.1-inch, 1920 x 1200 LCD screen is set to be a rather snazzy affair driven by the same chippery as Sony’s high-end smartphones. Side-mounted stereo speakers are driven by virtual surround sound tech. If you are in the habit of dropping your kit into puddles or sand dunes, the IP57-certified dust and water resistance rating will be an attraction. The 6000mAh battery should give you a decent run-time between charges too. What’s the asking price for this wafer-thin slice of fondleslab excellence? Sony isn’t saying, but I’m going to guess somewhere in the region of Not Cheap. It'll be out by June.

One thing that the Chromebook Pixel really brings home is how crap normal laptops have become. Why do PC manufacturers even bother any more? No wonder the PC business isn't doing well, when they stick to just churning out more crappy stuff and think that "full HD" (aka 1080p) is somehow the epitome of greatness.I'm still running ChromeOS on this thing, which is good enough for testing out some of my normal work habits (ie reading and writing email), but I expect to install a real distro on this soon enough. For a laptop to be useful to me, I need to not just read and write email, I need to be able to do compiles, have my own git repositories etc...Self-proclaimed "cyborg" Steve Mann is in a similar position to Linus Torvalds, he really likes Google Glass, just like Torvalds digs the Pixel, but he has his reservations too.On one hand, it's immensely satisfying to see that the wider world now values wearable computer technology. Wer das Microsoft-Paket nutzen will oder muss, bekommt für das Geld ein ausreichend ausgestattetes Mobilgerät für einfache Aufgaben. Mit zusätzlich drei Jahren Garantie können entsprechende Nutzer also wenig falsch machen. Lediglich die knappe Akkuzeit sollten Sie im Hinterkopf behalten. Wer mehr als nur surfen und hin und wieder mit Office arbeiten will, sollte in eine Alternative mit mehr RAM und Speicherplatz investieren.

As a first project, it's good practice, and novices will learn a heap of stuff: downloading and compiling source, Linux command line tools, configuration etc. For the rest, well, for a headless web-app server, an RPi may be all you need. Or use it as a test server, or for hosting a blog. It's also forms the basis for some other types of projects (see below), where having a web page that can display data from the RPi's GPIO inputs is half the battle.Exclusive Taiwanese server maker Quanta is sick of people misrepresenting or guessing about the size and might of its server business, and so it is setting the record straight. And as it turns out, Quanta has an absolutely huge and absurdly fast-growing server business that should make all of the server incumbents quake with trepidation and sharpen their envy knives.The server arm of the $37bn Quanta Computer giant has been relatively quiet in recent years as it made its way into the original design and manufacturing, or ODM, server business and now has greatly expanded its direct sales.

The company opened up its US subsidiary last year, called Quanta QCT, which is located in Fremont, California, and is opening up an office in Seattle, Washington next month to do technical support, sales, and marketing to hyperscale cloud operators.As it becomes more known in the States, Quanta is starting to talk about its business a little more. Mike Yang, vice president and general manager of the cloud business unit at Quanta Computer, reached out to El Reg to set the record straight about its server biz."It is important to acknowledge that the market was changing, and is still changing, and that this business came to Quanta," explained Yang. "Quanta did not go looking for this."Rather, Yang said, companies running hyperscale data centers were not happy with general-purpose machines and wanted something that specifically fit their workloads and their data centers. That's why Facebook and Rackspace Hosting – two companies that Quanta can reference – and others, who are very secretive about their servers and their suppliers because the machines are themselves a competitive advantage, came to Quanta and got this custom server business rolling.And as it turns out, Quanta is relying less and less on its ODM business, where it makes machines for other IT suppliers, and more and more on its direct sales to the hyperscale data center customers, cutting out the middlemen.

"They know very well what they need, and we know how to design – that's what we do," affirmed Yang. "Most of the time, we exceed their design expectations. This is our value."That value has translated into a very large number of server shipments that are helping to prop up the overall market, and revenues that are growing five times as fast as shipments. Yup, you heard that right. In a server racket where revenues are flat to down and shipments are piddling along, Quanta is exploding.In 2008, using IDC figures, there were 8.1 million servers sold, with 7.7 million of them being based on x86 processors. In 2012, there were still 8.1 million servers sold worldwide, but 8 million of them were x86 boxes. So the x86 platform is crushing the market share like crazy.Yang didn't have figures at hand going all the way back to 2008 for Quanta server business, but said that the company shipped 1.2 million server nodes in 2012 to companies all over the world, and that this represented 19 per cent growth over 2011's figures.

If you do the math, that means Quanta shipped slightly more than 1 million machines in 2011. If you use IDC's shipment numbers, then about one of every seven machines that shipped last year on the entire planet was forged by Quanta.Granted, Quanta does not always get credit for that manufacturing, since the Googles, Facebooks, Amazons, Rackspaces, Yahoos, Baidus, and other hyperscale data center operators of the world do not talk about who actually designs and makes their machines.And Yang talking about shipments today with El Reg is meant to make it clear that the box counters of the world are not giving Quanta its proper share. Which was around 14.8 per cent, if you do the math and assume the IDC shipment numbers are correct across all vendors.AMD has released its latest A-Series laptop chips, codenamed "Richland" and replacing the "Trinity" chips released last spring.Is it a giant leap from Trinity to Richland? Well, no, but the new chips are clearly a step forward – if, in some cases, only incrementally.Before we dig into Richland's upgrades, a refresher course to those Reg readers who don't regularly follow AMD's consumer efforts. Rather than merely calling its processors, well, processors, a few years back it decided to call their CPU-GPU mashups "APUs", which stands for accelerated processing units. The new Richland A-Series APUs are best described as improved Trinity APUs. They're based on the same second-generation "Piledriver" compute cores that had their APU debut in Trinity, and their GPU remains based on the AMD "Cayman" VLIW4 (very long instruction word) architecture.AMD's Graphics Core Next, which we heard so much about at the company's 2011 Fusion Summit, doesn't make its appearance in Richland; it seems that we'll have to wait until AMD's next round – "Kaveri", "Kabini", and "Temash" – before GCN makes it into APUs.But despite Richland's close resemblance to Trinity, there are improvements to celebrate – improved power management, for one. According to AMD, Richland's power-management system is much more granular than that of Trinity, allowing for more-precise control over which parts of the chip are lit up – and, more importantly, which parts can be shut down, thus saving power.In most cases, the power savings over Trinity are nothing to get frightfully excited about, but AMD does claim that one workload – 720p video playback – can see power savings of as much as 25 per cent. Not too shabby, if true.

Any amount of power savings is to be welcomed, of course, and seeing as how both Richland's CPU and GPU cores can be cranked up and down in a base/turbo scheme, any power saved in other ways can keep them turboing that much longer without stepping over the total-power line, thus improving performance.And speaking of clock rates, Richland's are faster than those of Trinity, as well – but keeping with the rest of Richland's improvements, the speed-ups are modest but welcome. For example, the top-end Trinity A-10 had a base clock of 2.3GHz, and turbos up to 3.2GHz, while the new Richland A-10 has a base of 2.5GH and a turbo of 3.5GHz.The clocks of that Richland A-10's 384 Radeon GPU cores are a bit zippier than those same number of cores in the Trinity A-10: a base of 533MHz and a turbo of 720MHz in the new chip versus 497MHz and 686MHz in the older chip.In its announcement of the Richland line – excuse me, the "AMD Elite A-Series Accelerated Processing Units" – AMD touted a number of user-interface niceties for which the new APUs will provide support, including facial-recognition login, gestural control, video image-stabilization and color-enhancement, and more.

Toshiba Satellite Pro A30: Leicht und ausdauernd
Mit rund 1,4 Kilogramm ist das A30 das zweitleichteste Geräte im Notebook-Vergleichstest. Leichter war nur das Medion Akoya S3409. Beim Display hat Toshiba gespart: Das 13,3-Zoll-Display (33,8 Zentimeter) hat eine für heutige Verhältnisse spärliche Auflösung von 1366x786 Pixeln. In der gleichen Preiskategorie gibt es bereits Laptops wie das Asus Vivobook Flip mit einem Full-HD-Display (1920x1080 Pixel). Ebenfalls erfreulich: Im Test stellte sich das Satellite Pro A30 als sehr ausdauernd heraus. Bei Office-Anwendungen hielt der Akku fünf Stunden 44 Minuten durch und beim Videogucken musste das Notebook nach rund sechs Stunden wieder ans Netz.
Laut der britischen Seite Which? sollen die Akkulaufzeiten bestimmter Laptop-Modelle stark von den Angaben der Hersteller abweichen. Demnach übertreiben fast alle bei der möglichen Akkukapazität, in manchen Fällen wurden bei den Labortests sogar nur halb so lange Akkulaufzeiten gemessen, wie dem Anwender beim Kauf eigentlich suggeriert wurden.

Innerhalb des letzten Jahres hat Which? 67 verschiedene Laptop-Modelle miteinander verglichen. Das Ergebnis: Die meisten Laptop-Produzenten lügen bei den Angaben bezüglich der Akkulaufzeiten um mehrere Stunden. Der „optimistischste“ Hersteller verschätzte sich bei der Akkulaufzeit seines Geräts um mehr als 50 Prozent.Die Akkulaufzeiten der Laptops wurden im normalen Betrieb getestet: Beim Browsen im Web über W-LAN oder beim Abspielen von Filmen getestet, bis die Batterie leer war. In drei Durchläufen wurden die Akkus von acht Acer-, drei Apple-, acht Asus-, zehn Dell-, zwölf HP-, zwanzig Lenovo- und sechs Toshiba-Laptops untersucht:

Wenn der Akku geladen wird, kann man ruhig warten, bis er voll aufgeladen ist. Schädlich für die Lebensdauer ist eher das ständige Nachladen. Wenn der Akku bei 80 Prozent ist, sollte er nicht unbedingt wieder ans Netzteil angeschlossen werden.Bei modernen Betriebssystemen muss der Laptop nicht unbedingt heruntergefahren werden – zuklappen reicht. Der Akku wird nicht sonderlich stärker belastet, als wenn das Gerät heruntergefahren wird. Eher wird sogar ein wenig Akku gespart, der Start des Notebooks und das Öffnen aller Programme im Autostart benötigt vergleichsweise viel Leistung.Dabei ist aber wichtig, dass in den Systemeinstellungen eingestellt ist, dass der Laptop beim Zuklappen in den Ruhezustand geht und nicht weiter läuft. Das sollte bei neu gekauften aber sowieso voreingestellt sein.

Lithium-Ionen-Akkus stecken in Smartphones, Elektrofahrrädern und Notebooks, aber auch in Haushaltsgeräten, elektrisch betriebenem Werkzeug und sogar in Spielzeug. Werden die Akkus unsachgemäß behandelt oder sogar beschädigt, können sie explodieren oder in Brand geraten. Weil es immer wieder schwer zu löschende Brände in Flugzeugen gab, hat das Luftfahrtbundesamt den Transport leistungsfähiger Akkus ab 160 Wattstunden in Passagiermaschinen verboten. Ein Elektrofahrrad darf man beispielsweise nicht mehr mit in den Flieger nach Mallorca nehmen. Beim Umgang mit Lithium-Ionen-Akkus sind nach Ansicht von Experten folgende Sicherheitsregeln zu beachten:

I can hardly blame them, either: wearing gloves indoors is something that only dickheads do. Will.I.Am. Do I need to say more? That said, Will.I.Am has one thing over me in that his gloves are fingerless, apparently so that he can use his smartphone, and this means he must not have greasy fingertips.So in addition to all the shiny rectangles, my overnight desk is adorned with two large lens cloths and a bottle of screen-cleaner spray. The viscosity of my finger-grease is such that the cloths are not that much use: what I probably need is an ice scraper.For the past fortnight, however, I have been experimenting with a variety of capacitive pens. I’ve tried quite a few now, including some crappy little sticks sold cheaply at Maplin (bless ’em) and some effectively disposable capacitive styli that one of my colleagues had picked up for a couple of quid a pop.For the moment, I have settled upon the ludicrously expensive Wacom Bamboo Stylus Duo which has a floppy capacitive rubber balloon at one end and a unremarkable ballpen at the other. This turns out to be very convenient for making floppy interactions on the tablets and taking unremarkable notes in my workbook, and it is fitted with several unscrewable fittings on the nibs and cap so that I have something to fidget with.

It does the trick, too: the screen cleaner is only required once a day now. However, a capacitive stylus is a nonsense tool. The whole point of capacitive touchscreens, which are more expensive to manufacture than stylus-controlled resistive touchscreens, is to support multiple simultaneous touches, enabling such actions as rotate, pinch and zoom. With my trusty £35 biro-cum-floppy-balloon, I have regressed to point-and-click.One answer could be to invest in a second capacitive stylus and use them like chopsticks. I will certainly give it a go and let you know how I get on. The chances are that I’ll end up holding a stylus in each hand and looking like someone on their first visit to a Chinese restaurant trying to pick up a noodle.Worse, the best of capacitive technology is still to come, and it is all dependent on the human sense of touch. Disney Research – yes, such a thing exists – has been working on a project called Revel that sends an electric current through your body to your fingertips, producing programmable tactile sensations as you touch otherwise smooth but appropriately wired-up objects. For example, imagine touching a photo of a brick on an iPad and feeling the brick’s rough surface, or touching the protective glass casing in front of a museum exhibit and having the sensation of what it’s like to touch the exhibit itself.

Zwar räumt die Behörde ein, dass dieser Batterietyp in den vergangenen zehn Jahren der Auslöser für unkontrollierte Brände bis hin zu Flugzeugabstürzen gewesen sein könnte. Ein vollständiges Transportverbot könne aber „bedeutende wirtschaftliche Auswirkungen haben“. Außerdem könnte ein Verbot dafür sorgen, dass Lithiumbatterien dann unangemeldet verschickt werden. Daher sucht die Kommission im Zusammenspiel mit Flugsicherheitsbehörden nach Maßnahmen, um das Risiko zumindest zu begrenzen.

Nach der Ausschreibung hat die EU einem Trio den Auftrag zur Entwicklung von Tests, Verpackungen oder Transportbedingungen zur sicheren Logistik der Risikobatterien vergeben. Dazu gehören die große belgische Forschungsorganisation Vito, der Flugzeughersteller Airbus in Hamburg und das erst 2014 gegründete israelische Spezialunternehmen Algolion. Das junge Unternehmen entwickelt nach eigenen Angaben Vorhersagealgorithmen, die schon eine Woche im Voraus vor einer Batterieexplosion warnen könnten.

Streit um Laptops im Frachtraum

Die Frage eines sicheren Lufttransports von Lithiumbatterien lieferte immer wieder Diskussionsstoff. Schon jetzt dürfen in Passagierflugzeugen keine Großlieferungen der Batterien mitfliegen. Im Frühjahr 2017 sorgte eine Anweisung von US-Behörden zur Terrorbekämpfung für Aufsehen; sie verhängten ein Laptop-Verbot für die Passagiere bestimmter Airlines im Handgepäck – wegen angeblicher Bombenpläne. Die Laptops gehörten in den Frachtraum, lautete die US-Anweisung.

Dagegen gab es jedoch Widerspruch von Experten. Im Dezember veröffentlichte die europäische Flugsicherheitsbehörde EASA einen erneuten Hinweis, dass Geräte mit Lithiumbatterien wenn möglich im Handgepäck zu transportieren sind.

Die Begründung ist einleuchtend: Die Crew könne auf einen möglichen Brand schneller reagieren. Entsprechend kritisch sprechen europäische Flugsicherheitsexperten über die Versuche ihrer US-Kollegen. Sie fürchten eher die Lithiumbatterie im Koffer: Zusammen mit einer Haarspraydose ergibt sie eine gefährliche Mischung im Frachtraum.

Portable Akkus, sogenannte Powerbanks, gehören zu den beliebtesten Accessoires für Smartphones, denn sie versorgen unsere Gadgets unterwegs mit dem nötigen Saft. Doch woran erkenne ich eine guten Powerbank?

Im Sommer ist man besonders gerne in der Natur und damit fern von jeder Steckdose. Doch fleissig Fotos schiessen oder beim Picknick laut Musik hören zwingt die meisten Smartphone-Batterien schnell in die Knie. Hier braucht es dann eine Powerbank.

Doch vorher gilt es einige Fragen zu klären: Welche Geräte wollen Sie mit der Powerbank aufladen? Ein Smartphone, ein Tablet oder gar einen Laptop? Und für welche Situationen soll die Powerbank Strom liefern: Einen kurzen Ausflug in den Park, einen Langstreckenflug oder gleich einen einwöchigen Campingtrip?

Die Antworten auf diese Fragen bestimmen, worauf Sie beim Kauf einer Powerbank achten sollten. Diese drei Kriterien sind besonders wichtig:

Wie viele Anschlüsse brauchen Sie und welche Art Anschluss soll es sein? Wenn Sie mehrere Geräte gleichzeitig aufladen wollen, brauchen Sie natürlich auch die entsprechende Anzahl von Anschlüssen an der Powerbank.

Und diese Anschlüsse müssen zu Ihren Geräten passen. iPhones etwa brauchen einen USB-A-Anschluss, um sich mit dem mitgelieferten Lightning-Kabel aufladen zu lassen. Bei immer mehr Android-Smartphones und zunehmend auch Laptops ist allerdings ein USB-C-Anschluss verbaut. Will man diese ohne Adapter aufladen, ist entsprechend ein USB-C-Anschluss an der Powerbank erforderlich. Inzwischen gibt es sogar erste Powerbanks, die das kabellose Aufladen nach dem QI-Standard unterstützen.

2. Kapazität

Wenn die Powerbank nur helfen soll, mit dem Smartphone durch den Tag zu kommen oder einen Langstreckenflug zu überstehen, dann reicht ein Mini-Modell mit knapp 3000-4000 Milliampèrestunden (mAh) Kapazität völlig aus. Diese gibt es schon für unter 15 Franken. Für diesen Einsatzzweck kann man sich alternativ auch eine praktische Batteriehülle zulegen.

Wollen Sie hingegen wochenlang vom Stromnetz unabhängig sein oder etwa einen Laptop aufladen, dann ist ein Bisschen mehr Kapazität nötig. Powerbanks mit bis zu 50’000 mAh sind derzeit zu einem Preis von knapp 150 Franken erhältlich - das reicht für etwa 10 Smartphone-Ladungen oder ein paar Extra-Stunden mit dem Laptop.

3. Leistung

Je mehr Leistung eine Powerbank bringt, desto schneller wird das Gerät aufgeladen. Die Leistung ist besonders wichtig, wenn man Laptops anschliessen will. Denn liefert die Powerbank hier zu wenig Strom, wird der Laptop-Akku schneller entladen, als er geladen werden kann.
