Get the Most Battery Life for Your Buck

How long a laptop lasts on its internal battery is one of the most important considerations for PC shoppers. Business travelers and students are often at the mercy of their computer's remaining juice, since so many conference rooms, airplanes, and classrooms are woefully short on accessible power outlets. Just a few years ago, it was necessary to buy and charge an external battery pack to get long battery life, or to insist on a machine with a removable, swappable battery. But today, even many thin ultraportables with sealed-shut chassis show impressive endurance away from an AC outlet.

These recent improvements in laptop battery life are thanks to CPUs and other components that are more power-efficient than ever. (It's not just new battery technology that deserves the credit.) That's especially true of Intel's 8th and 9th Generation Core processors, which power most of the longest-lasting models currently on our list.

A laptop that can last for more than eight hours without a trip to a power plug should be enough to get you through a day's work, but that's not good enough to make it to the upper echelons today. Each of the laptops and 2-in-1s we've selected lasted for more than 14 hours on our tests, which means that they can survive a full day at the office and still offer plenty of juice for your commute or for watching videos on the couch. In addition to being a critical specification, battery life is one of the toughest to measure. If you're watching movies all day long, you'll get far more unplugged time than someone who's editing images nonstop in Photoshop. We test battery life based on a very specific scenario: watching movies stored locally at 50 percent screen brightness and with airplane mode turned on. If you're frequently performing more CPU-intensive or graphics-hammering tasks, you'll want to shave an hour or two off of our results.

Our top 10 list is stacked with traditional laptops and convertible designs with 360-degree display hinges. Detachable Windows tablets tend to be underrepresented, and for good reason: There's simply no room for a large battery in such a small enclosure. One notable exception is the Microsoft Surface Book 2, which includes two separate batteries, one in the tablet and one in the keyboard base. Together, they eked out an impressive 17 hours of battery life in our testing, but you'll get far less than that if you're using the tablet by itself.

Want the Best Battery Life? Consider a Mac

Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro lineups have a reputation for excellent battery endurance, and Cupertino's current offerings are no exception. Most of the portable Macs we've tested recently can manage more than 14 hours away from an outlet. Which one you should choose depends on your budget, your portability needs, and your usage patterns, but you can't go wrong on the battery-life front with any Apple ultraportable. (And remember, Macs can run Windows, too.)

Other manufacturers are more hit-and-miss. The top honors for battery life among Intel-based Windows laptops of the moment go the Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 (21 hours!), but many competing machines run down much more quickly. We're also seeing an emerging class of "always on" machines based on low-power Qualcomm Snapdragon processors that have outlasted most Intel-based Windows and macOS laptops we have tested. But know that these laptops are meant more for lightweight mobile computing with a continuous internet connection, and are far from power models meant for CPU musclework.

But despite huge advances in the power and capabilities of these devices, dwindling battery life remains a problem for many.

There's nothing more frustrating than your laptop battery dying while you're working in a café or on the train, with no access to a power socket.

To help combat this, independent tech retailer Ebuyer has put together some tips to help you get the most from your laptop's battery.

Switch off WiFi when not being used

Although most of your laptop use will likely require internet access, there is an option to disable the Wi-Fi features for when it is not in use.

The Wi-Fi adapter draws a lot of power from the battery, so switching it off when you are somewhere with no coverage could save you a significant portion of battery life.

To do this, there is often a shortcut button feature on your keyboard, but if not, this can be done by accessing the settings through the start menu, selecting ‘Network & Internet’ and then the Wi-Fi tab which can be simply switched off. Akku für Acer Aspire 4741

Dim the backlight

Backlights allow you to clearly see the colours of your LCD or LED display and, although markedly improved from where they once were, still use a substantial amount of power.

A simple way to adjust this is to use a keyboard shortcut, which is an available function on most laptops, (usually the Fn button, plus one of the F-number keys on the top row).

Alternatively, you can navigate to the system settings via the start button, select ‘System’ and then adjust the brightness on the scale accordingly under the ‘Devices’ tab.

Use your battery once it's charged

A lot of people like to keep their laptop battery on permanent charge unless they are using it on the move. This can be detrimental to the longevity of your battery.

Some laptops do include a battery care function to avoid this issue by preventing batteries from being fully charged, but the best practice is to run your battery down before charging it to increase its lifespan.

Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals

Change your power settings

There is a solution as simple as changing your battery settings to ‘Battery Saver’ mode, which is particularly useful when on the move.

With a lot of laptops, there is a shortcut to adjusting your power settings to ‘power saver’ by simply clicking the battery icon on your toolbar in the bottom right corner and adjusting the slider scale down.

Laptops from companies like Dell have been certified as Project Athena, which means they have long battery life and meet other requirements set by Intel.

A wave of Intel-powered laptops are about to get thinner, lighter -- and a lot more power efficient.

This week at the IFA electronics trade show in Berlin, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, MSI and Razer plan to unveil new laptops using Intel's Comet Lake 10th-generation Core processors. Some of those devices will meet Intel's new Project Athena requirements, designing computers to be even more mobile. Details on the new PCs will roll out over the coming days, Intel said.

The Santa Clara, California, chipmaker first talked about Project Athena at Computex in May. The aim of the program is to make PCs even more mobile, like smartphones. People spend an increasing amount of time on their phones and less time on their PCs, and they're holding onto computers for much longer than their smartphones. The answer for Microsoft and traditional PC makers has been to turn computers into something more like phones. They've been working with Qualcomm on such devices for a couple of years, and now Intel, the world's biggest PC chipmaker -- is jumping into the fray. Akku für DELL XPS L501x

As CNET's Stephen Shankland put it, Intel wants us to "love our laptops the way we love our phones."

Machines designed through Project Athena are supposed to be different. They're meant to wake instantly, sport brighter screens for outdoor use and have battery life that lasts all day. Project Athena laptops also need to be able to complete a biometric login process in a second or less after a laptop lid is opened, and Athena gets an additional second to connect to Wi-Fi.

They're initially going to be pricey laptops, but the features should eventually make their way to less-expensive devices, as well, Intel said. Many of the first devices are older designs with Intel's new Comet Lake chips inside.

"What Intel wants to do with Project Athena is really drive a wider range of products to hit those thinner designs, longer battery life and better performance numbers," Technalysis Research analyst Bob O'Donnell said.

Battling Snapdragon PCs

Intel's move comes partly in response to an effort by chip rival Qualcomm to build something similar. The company started working with Microsoft and PC makers about two years ago to develop computers that use its Snapdragon processor and seamlessly convert between laptops and tablets. The latest Snapdragon 8cx-powered Windows PC is Samsung's Galaxy Book S, which the company unveiled last month at its Unpacked event in New York. The LTE-enabled device, which CNET reviewer Josh Goldman called "insanely thin," has 23 hours of battery life and will cost $999 when it arrives this month.

"It looks like a laptop, and it's got the essence of a smartphone, the best of both worlds," Hassan Anjum, Samsung director of product strategy and marketing, said at the Galaxy Book S launch. "You have the freedom to work anywhere, anytime."

By comparison, with Project Athena, laptops have to have "real world" battery life -- like web browsing -- of at least nine hours, and charging the devices for half an hour should add four additional hours of battery life.

Already, several machines from Dell, HP and Lenovo have been certified as Project Athena compatible. Those are the Dell Inspiron 14 5000, Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1, Dell XPS 13 2- in-1, HP EliteBook x360 1040, HP EliteBook x360 1030 G4, Akku TOSHIBA Satellite L750, HP EliteBook x360 830 and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Intel said devices that meet its Project Athena requirements will feature "Engineered for Mobile Performance" marketing.
