Computer hardware maker Asus has revealed a new motherboard with features geared specifically toward cryptocurrency miners.

Dubbed the B250 Mining Expert, the board was debuted over the weekend by Asus' Republic of Gamers, the Taiwan-based manufacturer's high-end gaming brand.

And while the product's release date and price aren't known yet, it nonetheless represents the latest signal that the mainstream hardware industry is expanding its cryptocurrency footprint. Further, the announcement comes months after Asus began rolling out GPUs designed specifically with crypto-miners in mind – aimed to take full advantage of the digital gold rush now taking place.

The B250 Mining Expert motherboard itself boasts a total of 19 PCI-Express expansion slots, compared to the 12, eight or six slots featured on competitors' products.

The idea is that cryptocurrency miners – who use computing power (and lots of electricity) to add new transactions to a blockchain, receiving newly minted coins as a reward – want to run as a many graphics cards as possible. The forthcoming board, according to the specs that are circulating, has roughly the capacity of two to three regular-sized motherboards.

The 19 expansion slots are split into three groups, each containing 24 dedicated pins. This allows the mining rig to be connected to three power supply units at once, stabilizing the rig for multi-GPU usage. The board also boasts a variety of features likely to appeal to miners, such as live visual statistics.

As previously reported by CoinDesk, other major GPU makers like Nvidia and AMD have moved in recent months to capitalize on the spike in demand for products that can be used for mining.

Earlier this month, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang issued bullish statements on the prospects for his firm's entry into the mining space, suggesting that it could be a long-term revenue driver.

So how much faster can quantum computers perform than their digital counterparts? Before purchasing their own D Wave system a few years back, Google put it through its paces and found that when the problem size got to the 500 qubit size range, the D Wave system outperformed its binary cousins by 10,000 times – a solid win in anyone's book.More recently, Google and NASA found that a D Wave 2 system with 1,097 qubits outperformed existing supercomputers by more than 3,600 times (and personal computers by 100 million x) on an optimization problem, solving it in mere seconds.
I need to point out that we shouldn't get out over our skis when it comes to quantum computing. These performance numbers I'm citing are from corner cases that hit right on the quantum sweet spot. General computing use performance still lags and programming one of these beasts is still more art than science.Still, I'm intrigued, and want to learn more about quantum computing and the D Wave boxes in particular. Is there RAID on the motherboard? How about PCIe 3? I actually did ask the RAID question in the video – and Bo didn't slap me.

StorageBod I see quite a few posts about this storage or that storage ... how it is going to change everything or has changed everything. And yet, I see little real evidence that storage usage is really changing for many. So why is this?It depends. Replacing block with object is somewhat hard. You can’t really get the performance out of it – you will struggle with the APIs especially to drive performance for random operations and partial updates.Replacing file with object is somewhat easier. Most unstructured data could happily be stored as object and it is. It’s an object called a file. I wonder how many applications even using S3 APIs treat Object Storage as anything other than a file-store, how many use some of the extended metadata capabilities? In many organisations what we want is cheaper block and file. If we can fake this by putting a gateway device in front of object storage, that’s what we will do. The object vendors have woken up to this and that is what they are doing. But if a vendor can do "native" file with some of the availability advantages of a well-written erasure coding scheme at a compelling price point, we won’t care.I’m afraid from my limited sample size; I find this is rarely the case. Most seem to want to interact with file-systems or databases for their persistence layer. Now the nature of the databases that they want interact with is changing with more becoming comfortable with NoSQL databases.

Most applications just don’t produce enough data to warrant any kind of persistence layer that requires Object or even any kind of persistence layer at all.Developers rarely care about what their storage is, they just want it to be there and work according to their needs.Only if Technology Y does not continue to develop and only if Technology X has a really good economic advantage. I do see a time when NAND could replace rotational rust for all primary storage but for secondary and tertiary storage? We might still be a way off.It also turns out that many people have a really over-inflated idea about how many IOPs their application need; there appears to be a real machismo about claiming that you need 1,000s of IOPS… when our monitoring shows that someone could write with a quill pen and still fulfil the requirement. Latency does turn out to be important – when you do your 10 IOPS, you want it to be quick. An individual gigabyte is basically free; a thousand of these is pretty cheap but a billion gigabytes is starting to get a little pricey. In my real life, I get to see a lot of people who request a terabyte of storage for a server because hell, even their laptop has this amount of storage. But for many servers, a terabyte is a huge amount of storage ... many applications just don’t have this level of requirement for persistent data. A terabyte is still a really large database for many applications – unless the application developers haven’t bothered to write a clean-up process.

Buy a calculator and factor in your true costs. Work out what compromises you might have to make and then work out what that is worth to you.You could but is it really your core business? Don’t try to compete with the web-scale companies unless you are one ... focus on providing your business with the service it requires. It changed, you should change too but there is still a role for people who want to manage the persistent data-layer in all its forms. It’s no longer storage … it’s persistence. ON-CALL+POLL Welcome again to On-Call, our weekly (and preponderantly prurient) piece in which readers share horror stories from their workplaces. This week, we're going interactive, because the situation in which reader “Flash” found himself describes an ethical dilemma The Reg feels un-qualified to address.Flash once had a gig “managing the email server for a manufacturing company in Los Angeles".Flash quickly noticed that “customers (hell, everyone) could not be trusted to type an email address correctly.” So he set up a catch-all address and every day scanned that inbox so he could send typo-blocked emails to the right person.

One day, Flash recovered an email from one sales person to another. As was his prudent habit, Flash retrieved the email. Some back story: the sales people were often on the road and were married, but not to each other. Which is why Flash's mind boggled as he read an email from the male sales person that “described in great detail the joy he had the previous day during their encounter at a motel.”The mail “went on to describe, again in great detail, every little thing he was going to do with her body during their next encounter. Absolutely nothing was left to the imagination. It could have been used as the script for a porn flick.”Reading that mail left Flash with the dilemma we need your help to solve.“I was trusted and respected by both management and rank-and-file alike,” he mailed El Reg. “I wanted everyone to continue trusting me.”Hinting to one of the parties that they should knock it off - or at least the graphic emailing - would make Flash identifiable as an email snoop and/or snitch. Correcting the mis-typed email and letting it reach its intended recipient would make him complicit in the affair and Flash didn't like the idea of that, either.

The new batch will join Sainsbury's second largest tech centre in Manchester and the move follows the addition of 480 digital and IT workers to its centres in London and Coventry.Update The University of Cambridge is due to host a cybersecurity hacking competition between the top UK universities next Saturday (23 April). The hackathon (pdf), which is expected to involve students from 10 UK universities, follows a similar exercise between the University of Cambridge and MIT last month. The latter exercise was promoted by US president Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron.Dr Frank Stajano, reader in security and privacy at the University of Cambridge's Computer Laboratory, explained that the long term aim of both exercises is to address the skills gap in cybersecurity. There has been a tremendous response from both the institutions and the students, especially when taking into account the very short time scale on which this has been organised (two months), Stajano explained.

Universities down to attend include Imperial College, Queens University Belfast, Royal Holloway, University of London, University College London and University of Oxford, among others. The university hackathon sits alongside wider initiatives such as the UK government's Cyber Security Challenge in attempting to bridge skills gap in cybersecurity. The difference is in the audience being addressed: the Cyber Security Challenge admits anyone who is not a security professional, Stajano explained. The Inter-ACE only admits candidates who are currently registered students at an ACE-CSR.Practical security exercises – such as the upcoming hackathon – need to be balanced alongside more traditional theoretical fayre in university syllabuses, according to Stajano. As an educator, I believe the role of a university is to teach timeless principles rather than the trick of the day, so I would not think highly of a hacking-oriented course that taught techniques destined to become obsolete in a couple of years, he said. On the other hand, a total disconnect between theory and practice is also wrong.I’ve always introduced my students to lockpicking at the end of my undergraduate security course, both as a metaphor and to underline that practical aspects are also relevant. It has always been enthusiastically received, and has contributed to make more students interested in security, Stajano concluded.

Lowery’s proposition is that in the long term, musicians and songwriters will gain more than they lose in the short term. YouTube and Pandora offer a fraction of the royalties returned by sites such as Spotify (which isn’t very much anyway), and the free tier drives down the price. Therefore, doing what you can to sabotage the ad-supported sites is the ethical thing to do.“In the fight for fair pay, artists are not at war with the internet or really even the streaming services, we are at war with the online advertising industry,” Lowery explained. How much of a hit would artists take if every ad-supported music streamer went dark? Less than you think, Lowery suggests. The removal of Spotify’s free tier would see their payments drop only 16 per cent.“But let's not get too distracted by that because the real crime is that YouTube pays so little it’s a joke,” he argues. “YouTube revenue is not gonna save artists and or the industry at large. I will barely miss it. And YouTube is clearly inhibiting the growth of subscription services that pay higher revenues.”

Spotify has argued that if the free tier disappears, people will simply steal music. But that overlooks two factors: people pay for convenience, and a good streaming site saves you a lot of time and trouble. And the cost of Doing The Right Thing is pretty low; a tenner a month barely buys two pints of beer in London. Nor is the idea of “ethical shopping” radical or new. Much is made of the power of consumers boycotting unethical businesses, but it’s slightly hypocritical to boycott arms dealers or oil companies or big tobacco, but then shun licensed music sources which pay musicians. The music industry traditionally left songwriters and musicians last when it came to money, but the new tech oligarchs offer them even less. Pandora and YouTube are very different animals, but both have benefited from weak copyright law, albeit in very different ways.Pandora takes advantage of the uniquely socialist system of a state-administered compulsory collective licence, with US Courts setting the price of music. Songwriters simply can’t opt out. It’s a weird hangover from a consent decree on performing rights societies. ASCAP, the US equivalent of the PRS, can’t refuse a licence to a broadcaster, while the broadcaster is only obliged to enter into negotiations. In this case, the rights-holder is denied the most fundamentally property-like aspect of a property right: excludability.YouTube also benefits from a lack of excludability. As we explained here, YouTube can use a quirk in the DMCA to avoid having to put a stop to an unlicensed supply chain. The odds are stacked against anyone trying to enforce the legal supply chain. As a consequence of the DMCA loophole, YouTube generates about $1 per user, while Spotify generates $18.

In neither situation can the musician enforce their copyright cheaply and effectively and get on with making music. The deck is stacked in favour of the middleman using the music. The all-powerful middleman today is Big Tech. But changing copyright in favour of the little guy takes time, and isn't easy, especially when Facebook, Google and others have grown so wealthy from it and lobby hard against it.Lowery thinks Google's dependence on data-mining and insipid copyright makes it uniquely “fragile”, to borrow Taleb’s usage, and vulnerable to disruption. A mass consumer revolt against privacy invasions, personal data mining, and unethical behaviour could leave Google vulnerable.“My 60:40 bet is they are not nimble enough to do so without a serious hit to their revenue.”But the internet isn’t about Google, or about adtech, he says. The internet couldn’t care less about Google.Thomas Wengierow, who is 47 and originally from Lithuania – from whence he returned to attend court today – has admitted to emailing himself copies of customer's personal details from Tesco's database while working at Tesco's Baird Avenue centre in Dundee.Wengierow will be sentenced next on the 20 May. Sheriff Lorna Drummond QC deferred sentencing to receive social work background reports on Wengierow, so the court could consider a community-based sentence instead of prison. LG has conducted a developer day to interest gadget-makers in developing third-party modules for its LEGO-like G5 smartphone.

When we first set eyes on the G5 we called for LG to enable a proper ecosystem for the device. LG officials The Register spoke to at the phone's Australian launch today said an effort to do so is now well and truly under way.LG did not wish to disclose details discussed at the developer event, but did reveal that peripheral proposals included a snap-in projector it is hoped will relieve sales people of needing a laptop to deliver presentations. A credit card reader has also been discussed and monster batteries have been raised.LG's pitched the G5 squarely at consumers, but officials we spoke to today are keenly aware of the phone's potential in business, as a modular phone is seen as a way to provide specialist functionality for phones used in niche applications. Organisations that aren't quite willing to sign up for phones-as-a-service from carriers or specialists and want the ability to do some repairs or upgrades are also on the company's mind.In Australia, the phone comes with an offer that will interest individuals and businesses alike: a free replacement screen if the display is accidentally broken in the first six months after purchase. The offer only applies for phones bought for the next few months, but LG sees it as an extension of the phone's modular concept.

Let's hope the offer causes hordes of people to buy the device: it would be lovely if a market for free replacement screens emerged as a result. Seagate's LaCie external storage drives unit has come up with a video editing workstation user's wet dream: 96TB capacity and 2.6GB/sec throughput from a Thunderbolt 3-accessed desktop tower. The Seagate drives are built for 24/7 operation; 8,760 hours a year, and the system comes with a five year warranty. With Thunderbolt 3 a user can daisy chain dual 4K displays or a single 5K display to the LaCie 12big. It's possible to provide power to a compatible laptop through the Thunderbolt 3 cable. The systems is suited, LaCie says, for the processing of data from 4, 5, and 6K cameras. With this storage sub-system speed and "for big projects packed with high-def clips, thumbnail and preview rendering becomes much more responsive."The UK’s second largest retailer, which is increasingly competing online against Amazon and more digital-savvy retail peers and buying Home Retail Group for £1.3bn, will hire software developers, software development managers, DevOps engineers and Agile coaches to join its 900-strong IT team.

Popular virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift are tethered to a PC, significantly limiting freedom of movement. So HP has put a VR-capable computer into a backpack – but it's very much for business, not entertainment.

HP describes its new Z VR Backpack as “the world's first professional wearable VR PC”.

Features include a 16GB Nvidia Quadro P5200 graphics processing unit and an Intel Core i7 vPro processor to minimise disconcerting dropped frames, and hot-swappable batteries to extend session lengths.

Potential applications can be found in a wide variety of fields – HP has mentioned product design, architecture, healthcare, first responder training, automotive, retail and entertainment.

For content creators, a docking station will speed the transfer of VR models from development PCs to the Backpack.

The Z VR Backpack is scheduled to go on sale in September – prices have yet to be announced, but don't expect it to be cheap. A VR “immersion centre” will open in Sydney before the end of the year so that customers can experience VR technology and consult HP’s experts.

Researchers at New York University Abu Dhabi said they have created an 'unhackable' chip to shore up the defences of computer hardware, in an age of increasing threats to individuals and companies across the globe.

This is the first working prototype of a chip that has security features or locks implemented as part of its hardware design, protecting it from hardware-level - rather than software - threats.

Ozgur Sinanoglu, NYUAD’s associate dean of engineering for academic affairs and head of the university’s Design for Excellence lab, has previously said malicious computer components - so-called Trojans - could be physically installed in factories or manufacturing labs. This would allow those behind the plan unfettered access to devices.

The chip has a secret key that makes it virtually impossible to access and would only function for authorised users.

“Without the secret key, the chips cannot be made functional,” he said.

“The functionality of chip - what it does, how it does it - can only be known if the secret key is known.”

A patent application has been filed at the US Patent Office. The researchers are creating a web-based platform to make information about the chip available to the public.

An extensive research paper by NYUAD’s Design for Excellence team will be presented in November at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security in the US.

“These are all theoretically proven points and we will present this at a top cyber security conference, but we need to test our claims practically as well," said Mr Sinanoglu.

"We will create a web-based platform to make all information about this chip available to public. We will ask researchers to act as hackers and retrieve the secret key of our chip or reveal the exact functionality of our chip design based on this information."

There has been growing concern about cyber security and calls for solutions to secure systems from hackers following the WannaCry ransomware attack.

WannaCry infected files, shut down hospitals, banks, transport systems and industry and affected more than 150 countries in May.

On Saturday afternoon, people noticed a man running suspiciously and given many such incidents in the neighbourhood in the recent past, thought he was a chain-snatcher. The residents caught him and though he denied having anything to do with chain-snatching, thrashed him before calling police.

Subramanyanagar cops rushed to the spot and took him to the station. The man was identified as Prabhakar, 40, a computer hardware engineer. A resident of Kammanahalli in east Bengaluru, Prabhakar said he was part of a gang led by Altaf from RT Nagar. "The accused was carrying Rs 1 crore in demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. We seized the demonetized currency from him," an officer said.

"Five people, including Altaf, reached Gayathri Nagar on Saturday and a misunderstanding between the gang members resulted in a clash. Altaf asked Prabhakar to leave the area with the cash, but he was caught by residents instead outside Altaf's house," a police officer said. "We have registered a case against Prabhakar and the gang. The accused said he was not aware of the source of the money. We are hoping to catch Altaf and find more about the source," the officer added. Police said they were investigating Prabhakar's claims that he had no criminal antecedents.

Next, if you want to access this quantum processor, you have to sign up for an account. Which means you must reach this page...
...and fill out an invitation request. If you hear back from IBM, you're in, presumably.IBM doesn't get it. It's not 2007 any more. The cloud today is on-demand computing, delivered virtually instantly at scale. You pick a username, you enter a password, you hand over your credit card number, you get into the service immediately. You start using it.Since when has invitation-only limited access to scientific experiments been the cloud? How exactly do you share a five-qubit processor at scale? It's too bad Big Blue can't ask its cloud chief technology officer: he left recently, along with other top-brass and all the staffers axed in an ongoing restructuring.Don't ask Arvind Krishna, senior vice president and director of IBM Research, either. This moment represents the birth of quantum cloud computing, he said in a canned quote, again demonstrating that IBM Research has a totally different definition of the word cloud to Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.

It's IBM Watson-as-a-service all over again. Can't someone at SoftLayer or IBM Bluemix have a word?PR spin aside, you're not going to rewrite textbooks with five qubits. In 2001, IBM scientists factored 15 into three times five using a seven-qubit processor. In 2013, physicists in China factored 143 using four qubits. In 2014, researchers were able to factor 291,311 using only 6 qubits. Your humble hack's 2.2GHz Core i5 laptop was able to calculate it instantly: 523 times 557.

Classic computer bits are either one or zero; on or off; true or false. Quantum bits are either zero, one or a superposition of both. Quantum computers are expected to be able to process calculations far faster than classic binary bits by coupling this three-state capability with other quantum effects. It's something that's been promised for decades.Quantum computing has a long way to go. IBM reckons 50 qubits are needed to top the fastest known supercomputers of today, and 100 qubit CPUs should be possible in the next decade. IBM's five qubit system is a fairly big hulking thing; the brains of the processor must be kept in a cryogenic dilution refrigerator to minimize the effects of heat and electromagnetic radiation.

Providing this kind of facility remotely to scientists is a nice gesture by IBM Research. Maybe one day it can scale. But dressing up this experimental technology right now as a quantum-computing-as-a-service free-for-all is absurd. One tech news site declared this morning: IBM just beat Google to a brand new type of computing. Swap computing for marketing and you're on the right track. Brocade has reset Q2 revenue expectations lower, citing a weak SAN market and continued IP networking headwinds. Instead of revenues between $542m to $562m, it now expects them to be between $518m to $528m. This is $523m at the mid-point, 4.4 per cent down on a year ago. CEO Lloyd Carney talked of a general softness in IT spending. William Blair analyst Jason Ader said: We suspect that weak systems sales, as well as a general shift to IP connectivity in storage, may have finally caught up to Brocade's FC networking business. To a lesser extent, Brocade may also be suffering from customers waiting for the next product cycle (32 Gbit/s), which is expected to kick in toward the end of the calendar year. Full results are expected on 19 May. WAHckon University students in the Australian city of Perth have landed in hot water, with one charged by Police, after finding and exploiting severe holes to rewind travel charges incurred using the city's SmartRider public transport smart card.

The Murdoch University students reported the flaws to SmartRider operator TransPerth and inflicted what is estimated to be about $18 in losses which were covered in later balance recharges, however local authorities considered the university security research an act of fraud. One student is appealing a conviction while a second involved only in the earlier parts of the research effort was not charged.Murdoch University second year student Jack Carruthers pled guilty and was handed a spent conviction, a type of criminal conviction that does not result in a permanent record that will show up in background checks.Carruthers and his colleagues undertook the research as part of their university security club Hack The Planet. Carruthers is the club's president.Members exploited the identified flaws in an effort to demonstrate the vulnerabilities at Perth train stations, in the knowledge that the act could see them breach state laws.Carruthers and his fellow researchers found still-existing failings in the MIFARE Classic SmartRider system that allowed them to roll-back charges to cards enabling free travel.

It is possible to replay an autoload (direct debit recharge) and keep getting more credit, Carruthers told the WAHckon security conference in Perth, last Sunday. The costs came out to $18 and the smart riders had $20 worth of credit, so I thought we were in the clear but the judge was of the opinion that my damning confession was all that was needed.Officers showed up on Carruthers' door about two months later, taking his laptop and 'all of his clothes' to prove his was the individual captured in CCTV photos. The researchers say the project was documented as part of the hacking club in what could conceivably demonstrate the academic intention of the work. The conviction comes at a time when the Turnbull Government under its Cyber Security Strategy is spending big to in part help lure and train students to information security university courses.Carruthers says TransPerth is planning a fix but will likely must invest in an expensive upgrade of cards to systems including the more secure MiFare DESfire EV2.He says the agency says it will remain vigilant for possible reload attacks until the upgrade.MIFARE Classic is long known to be vulnerable to compromise. The Christchurch bus system which then operated the platform was popped in similar 2013 research by Melbourne security bod William Turner who found he could load cards with any amount of money.

It was told to implement training and guidance or face court action following a data breach that led to a child's medical reports being stolen. The council just west of Glasgow has been audited twice in 2013 and advised to improve its data-handling. It failed to do so, and in 2014 an employee left a laptop and paperwork on an adoption case in a car overnight, from which it was stolen.Ken Macdonald, assistant information commissioner for Scotland, said: “Let’s be clear, what we’re asking for here is a basic requirement for an organisation that is trusted with large amounts of local people’s personal data.” When is ad-blocking ethical? How about when the adtech industry is behaving so unethically it destroys people’s livelihoods?Musician and music rights campaigner David Lowery last year made the incendiary suggestion that musicians should encourage their fans to block the advertising running on music-streaming sites – even though in the short term, it’s the musicians themselves who’ll take a hit in income. With the rise in ad-blockers, his idea is topical again, so let’s have a look at the merits of the argument.

What does this mean? The NTIA isn't sure beyond the fact that something clearly needs to be done. It points out that its analysis has only scratched the surface but even that initial review has made it clear that policymakers need to develop a better understanding of mistrust in the privacy and security of the Internet and the resulting chilling effects. It warns, not without some justification, that unless something is done to increase trust it may reduce economic activity and hamper the free exchange of ideas online. There are some policy plans afoot: the Obama Administration has put out draft privacy legislation, and the NTIA is running a number of processes with a range of stakeholders on online privacy and cybersecurity, including its current one on the internet of things. The release of this data however demonstrates that there is a very real impact of security and privacy breaches. And it blows apart the idea that a move to online activities is somehow inevitable by showing that people do in fact scale back when impacted. That reality may serve as a catalyst for businesses to get serious about fixing problems and invest in make the online experience a safe, more secure one. Students who have access to computer devices in the classroom do significantly worse than colleagues without them, a study has found.

In a study by MIT's School Effectiveness & Inequality Initiative, titled The Impact of Computer Usage on Academic Performance: Evidence from a Randomized Trial at the United States Military Academy, students whose classroom access to computer devices was prohibited performed better in exams.726 undergraduates studying an introductory economics course at the United States Military Academy were randomly separated into three groups.A control group was prohibited from using any laptops or tablets, another had access to tablets which were required to be flat on the table at all times, while the third was free to use tablets and laptops. The researchers found that permitting computers or laptops in a classroom lowers overall exam grades by around one-fifth of a standard deviation. The reasons for this were unclear, however, as a number of factors could potentially contribute to the lower scores, including the ease at which students could be distracted by surfing the internet, lowered note-taking skills, and changes in the teacher's behaviour when interacting with students on a computer. We want to be clear that we cannot relate our results to a class where the laptop or tablet is used deliberately in classroom instruction, as these exercises may boost a student’s ability to retain the material . Rather, our results relate only to classes where students have the option to use computer devices to take notes.
We further cannot test whether the laptop or ta blet leads to worse note taking, whether the increased availability of distractions for computer users (email, facebook, twitter, news, other classes, etc.) leads to lower grades , or whether professors teach differently when students are on their computers.

They conclude: Given the magnitude of our results , and the increasing emphasis of using technology in the classroom, additional research aimed at distinguishing between these channels is clearly warranted. Google has decided that emoji need to offer better role models for women and has therefore proposed 13 new ones, all depicting women in the workplace.Google's proposal (PDF) says the company “wants to increase the representation of women in emoji” and therefore suggests “a new set of emoji that represents a wide range of professions for women and men with a goal of highlighting the diversity of women’s careers and empowering girls everywhere.”

Google's four submitters cite a New York Times op-ed by Amy Butcher in which she wrote “How was there space for both a bento box and a single fried coconut shrimp, and yet women were restricted to a smattering of tired, beauty-centric roles? This was not a problem for our male emoji brethren. Men were serving on the police force, working construction and being Santa. Meanwhile, on our phones, it was Saturday at the Mall of America — women shopping while men wrote the checks.”The four Googlers also point out various studies that show women are the main users of emoji, so surely deserve emoji that go beyond cliches. The thirteen chosen emoji are also based on research into the most common occupations and take into account recent campaigns encouraging women and girls into professions in which they are under-represented.Emoji usually have secondary representations, but Google argues its 13 proposed characters should be depicted as women only because that's the point of this whole idea. The proposal ends with a call for “other members of Unicode to join us in creating a system of emoji design that can accommodate a broader gender spectrum.” Under the deal it will provide communications in remote areas and additional network resilience. Mansoor Hanif, director of Radio Access Networks at EE, said the deal will enable the biz to deliver a truly nationwide 4G network to rural areas.

BlackHat Asia A world-first proof-of-concept worm - if unleashed - could spell disaster for the world’s critical infrastructure, including power utilities by making attacks exponentially more difficult to detect and stop.It is a stand-alone attack but The Register has confirmed a realistic stealthy end-to-end attack scenario can be produced by combining two independent research efforts. The programmable logic controller (PLC) worm is the brain child of German hackers Ralf Spenneberg and Maik Brüggeman of Steinfurt-based consultancy OpenSource Security Ralf Spenneberg, and, unlike any past attacks, is able to spread from devices without the need of an infected laptop or desktop. All other PLC malware such as Stuxnet relied on having an infected computer to spread to other controllers, meaning an infection could be stopped from proliferating by removing those machines.Spenneberg and Brüggeman claim the attack spreads like cancer between default Siemens S7 1200 PLCs, and could be reworked to target other systems. They say it can also be used in proxy-chains to gain a foothold into utility networks, depending on the PLC used.

The Verge : "Attendez l'iPhone de l'année prochaine"The Verge : « Attendez l’iPhone de l’année prochaine »

When you’re trying super hard to make the relationship work pic.twitter.com/Ro3H1DgOC9Mais le choix ne serait pas une mauvaise chose.

The backlash to President Donald Trump's response to last weekend's violent events in Charlottesville, Virginia, has led to worries about the president's pro-business agenda.

Reports that Gary Cohn is considering resigning as Trump's top economic advisor weighed on Wall Street, although the White House has denied the claims.

Cohn, former president and chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs (GS), currently serves as the Director of the National Economic Council.

"Nothing has changed," a White House official said. "Gary is focused on his responsibilities as NEC Director and any reports to the contrary are 100% false."

Cohn was reportedly "upset" and "disgusted" with Trump's remarks indicating blame for the clashes between white supremacists and counter-protesters should be shared by both sides.

There is a little bit of processor and memory load to pull this off, but it's well within the scope of Chromebooks that use either Intel or ARM processors, he explained. Chromebooks are more powerful than the smartphones that Android apps are designed for, so processors will have little problem running the mobile code. The system does have its limits, however. Android apps that require specific hardware, like an always-on cellular link, won't run on a laptop that doesn't have the necessary kit. But that's not as big an issue as you might think, Liu opined. For example, while some apps require GPS (something very few laptops bother to install), what they are actually after is location information, and that can usually be provided by WiFi systems. That said, according to Liu, the addition would give a spur for manufacturers to build more hardware into premium models. It's possible – cellular-connected Chromebooks have traditionally been the red-headed stepchild of the platform and supporting the connections for Android users could prove popular.Google didn't announce any new Chromebooks in its Pixel line, but said new hardware would be coming out from other manufacturers when Android is fully integrated later this year.

Overall, Google was very pleased with the Chrome OS model, Liu said, citing figures from IDC saying that the platform is now outselling Macs in the US. Fifty million schoolchildren are now using Chromebooks, he said, and there was potential for great growth in the enterprise market.Liu said that the Android addition would be included in the next developer release of Chrome OS, M53, in the next few weeks, and then on to consumers later in the year when the bugs have been sorted out. Desktop-as-a-service in 2016 is about as mature as infrastructure-as-a-service was in 2008, so waiting until it matures is more sensible than diving in now.So says Garter for Technical Professionals' analyst Mark Lockwood, who The Register's virtualisation desk beheld yesterday at the firm's Infrastructure Operations & Data Centre Summit in Sydney.Lockwood said DaaS currently lags desktop virtualisation (VDI) in many ways, especially on cost. Best-practice VDI costs about US$300/seat/year. DaaS costs more. VDI doesn't have latency problems. DaaS does and those problems only get worse if your desktops have to come in over the WAN to reach data inside the firewall, pipe that data into the cloudy desktop and then send it to users over the WAN again.Current DaaS offerings are also a little unrealistic – the base configuration of a single CPU with 2GB of RAM is not useful for most applications. More realistically-specced machines cost about US$50/month. Suppliers are also thin on the ground. Today only Amazon Web Services and VMware provide a single-throat-to-choke experience. Other providers can split bills so you pay for VDI licences and for the cloudy desktops.

On the upside, Lockwood said VDI is a notoriously finicky application that requires a big up-front investment and even then often needs tweaks. In typical cloudy style, DaaS requires no up-front spend. DaaS' elasticity is also helpful for businesses that employ seasonal workers. With on-premises VDI you need to buy for peak user numbers and then wear the cost of idle infrastructure. DaaS is also nicely secure: if a mobile worker uses a cloudy desktop on a properly-secured device, sensitive data should be out of reach to whoever it is finds a laptop or iPad in an airline seat..Like all cloud services, DaaS will of course get better and cheaper. But Lockwood said there's no point in waiting for DaaS to improve if VDI is something you need now. That's because DaaS is still rather immature, but just as IaaS has come a long way in a short time Lockwood expects it won't be long before the list of reasons not to consider DaaS becomes rather shorter. Nearly half of all Americans have not carried out a normal online task because of security and privacy fears, according to a new survey by the US government.Forty-five per cent of the 41,000 households contacted said they had decided not to do online banking, or buy goods online, or post on social networks because they were worried about what might happen. Just under a third of them said they had stop several of those activities over the same fears.

The survey by the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) makes for sober reading. It also makes a direct connection between people scaling back their online activities and the impact of a wave of recent security breaches of personal data.An extraordinary 19 per cent of households - which extrapolates to nearly 24 million households across the US - have been personally affected by an online security breach in the past year. That's perhaps not surprising given the big-name consumer companies impacted, including, to name just a few: Target, Home Depot, Verizon, Wendy's and Kiddicare - the last two reported just this week. Those that have been the victim of a data breach are significantly more likely to scale back their online activities, the survey found: on average nine per cent. The data also reveals a sad truth: the more you do online, the more likely you are to have your information compromised.Of households that reported only having one online device like a computer or laptop, just six per cent of them said they had been victim of a data breach. That percentage goes up almost linearly to an appalling 31 per cent of households with five or more online devices.

Households Reporting Online Security Breaches by Number of Different Types of Devices Used, Percent of Households with Internet Users, 2015
In that respect, the decision by more and more American to opt out of online tasks is a logical one. But it is also one that has significant economic impact given the extent to which companies are moving their goods and services online.Every day, billions of people around the world use the Internet to share ideas, conduct financial transactions, and keep in touch with family, friends, and colleagues, an NTIA policy analyst Rafi Goldberg wrote in a related blog post.Users send and store personal medical data, business communications, and even intimate conversations over this global network. But for the Internet to grow and thrive, users must continue to trust that their personal information will be secure and their privacy protected.Of people's fears, identity theft sits at the top with 63 per cent of people citing it as a real concern. Second comes credit card and banking fraud with 45 per cent. Then data collection by online services, loss of control over personal data, data collection by the government, and threats to personal safety with 23, 22, 18 and 13 per cent respectively.

My quick-thinking in triggering the app just in time was simply the culmination of years of experience on the stage. Of course, what I mean by that is performing in front of other people. And what I mean by that is teaching training courses.I love my trainees – or “delegates” as we’re supposed to call you, as if you have been somehow delegated to learn new skills on someone else’s behalf – but frequently I have to deal with unexpected turn of events. This can range from being asked to teach something entirely different from what had originally been requested (which can actually be a lot more fun than teaching the same old stuff) to calming down the deranged (which is not fun at all).I could regale you with stories but won’t. Well, there was that occasion when, in front of a conference room of 30 production staff, a heckler with a broad Glaswegian accent suddenly shouted out: “This is a load of crap!”Thankfully this was in the pre-LinkedIn era, otherwise I’d have earned Skills & Endorsements in Verbal Diarrhoea, Talking Crap and Spouting Bollocks.I love them all just the same, not least because every delegate comes out the other end of my courses with new skills and higher earning potential. Even those who were angry and upset at having their professionalism questioned by the very fact of being sent on a training course will always come round in the end. Uncle Tam “what a load of crap” McVitie was particularly apologetic, I remember, and went on to achieve significant promotion at work.

But readers who have not experienced training from the trainer’s point of view may be surprised at how often we face the challenge of deliberate sabotage.Imagine you are halfway through a morning session and a delegate informs you that the scroll wheel on his mouse is not working. You move across the room to help, only to discover that the delegate in question is inexplicably using a mouse you have never seen before. You ask the delegate why he is using a different mouse. He tells you that he brought it in from his office because he prefers it. You point out that the reason the scroll wheel is not working is because his mouse does not have a scroll wheel. Here’s another scenario: a delegate informs you that his mouse is not working at all. Sure enough, you can confirm that it’s not working. This is because it has been unplugged from the PC and the cable has been slung over a corner of the delegate’s monitor.

You ask the delegate why he has unplugged his mouse. He tells you that the cable was getting in the way.Or there was that time when a senior executive booked a three-hour one-to-one session, delivered remotely across the Pacific via Citrix and video-conferencing, to preview a DAM system that we’d been customising for her company. Considerable effort had been expended in advance of the event, directing local support staff on how to install and test the system on a demo computer. At the appropriate time – 4am in London – she breezed in to the remote boardroom and insisted that the entire demo be run on her own laptop that she’d brought in from home. Better still, it was a superslim ultra-portable with no Ethernet port, fuck-all memory and a half-arsed processor with less power than a twisted rubber band. The demo eventually began two and a half hours later. To be fair, two hours of that was taken up trying to retrieve her Windows password, with which she’d recently encrypted her hard disk before promptly forgetting what it was.

So you can imagine how unfazed I was that a member of my magic show audience should swap the supplied gaffed musket for his own Uzi. To be honest, it wouldn’t have surprised me if he’d decided to throw Bowie knives or use a chainsaw instead.Unceremoniously whisked away from a potentially gruesome fate on a post-Edwardian London stage and dumped back in 2016 by my time machine, I am reminded how much the city landscape has changed over the intervening 98 years. It seems the East-End music hall in which I had been performing was destroyed by the Hun long ago, and a rag-trade sweatshop business premises was built in its place.Indeed, my worst fears are realised. In the present day, I find myself standing – still dressed in a shimmering sequinned mock-mandarin costume and holding a broken plate – in the middle of a distressed-chic startup office of thrusting incubated fintech wankers.I have been returned to a cacophony of breakout sessions on sofas, the hissing of coffee machines and the smell of t-shirts that have been slept in. Someone is flailing around with a VR headset on. I can hear someone else being Rickrolled. A stray ping-pong ball bounces off my head.

Worst of all, there are beards everywhere. It’s like a Captain Haddock cosplay contest at a Geography teachers’ convention. This week, reader “Jackson” shared the story of his time working for a very large and old three-letter-company, where he was part of a ““IT service consolidation” project that meant his client's employees could not just ask the IT team for help. Instead, their first port of call had to be the help desk. Come what may.Jackson told us the client “had a number of contracts and had civilians supporting military operations in Iraq.”Jackson helped out on the help desk from time to time, and one day decided to pick up a call solely on the basis that the incoming number looked interesting.Google I/O 2016 Google has pulled the move the software market has been waiting ages for, and built a system to run Android apps on its desktop operating system. The system works by setting up a Linux container in the Chrome operating system that runs a complete version of Android in a locked-down environment to minimize security issues. It's not an emulated version of Android, so there should be a minimum number of issues, Chrome OS team leader Kan Liu told developers at the Google I/O conference.

Even if you do trust whoever issued the certificate it doesn't mean much if the network cannot be trusted. A lot of experts claim “HTTPS is broken” and here is one small example of why. If you sit in a coffee shop and go surfing you can quite easily end up being the victim of a man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack. All a potential attacker needs is a copy of Kali Linux, a reasonably powerful laptop and coffee! But wait, you cry, aren't certificates supposed to protect us from exactly this type of thing? Yes but... essentially in our coffee-shop scenario the connection can be forced to run via the MitM laptop using a program called SSLstrip to copy the data as it is passed back and forth to Gmail. We get the traffic from the victim by poisoning the ARP cache and pretending to be the router. SSLStrip forces a victim's browser into communicating via an attacker’s laptop in plain-text over HTTP, with the adversary proxies the modified content from an HTTPS server. The HTTPS between Gmail and you is now readable because you get the decrypted plain text data before it is encrypted and sent to Gmail.

It isn't just coffee shops that present this risk. Frequently, SSL inspection is used in offices of larger companies to monitor staff web activity. Several companies such as FireEye and Bluecoat provide specialised appliances to do this at wirespeed, essentially rendering them unnoticeable. Governments can also do the same using FinFisher or other tools running on ISP networks. This is one of the main reasons I tell people not to check their web mail on their work computer. Employers probably have the right do that written into their employment terms and conditions. Companies do, however, have other more legitimate reasons for breaking SSL scanning for malware-related traffic and data loss prevention (DLP being the new hot ticket item). If you couldn't look inside an encrypted packet you would have no idea what's flowing across the network most of the time other than source and destination. What are the mitigations against all these for the average Joe user? In reality not a lot. Use your common sense when connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot. Ask yourself:On a larger scale there are a few things that can be done but require effort. If a site provides only HTTPS then sslstrip would fail as it can't fall back to HTTP. Also browsers are becoming better at dealing with these types of issues.

Some browsers such as Chrome use a new technique called certificate pinning. This technique creates a digital fingerprint for each HTTPS site visited and afterwards compares it to the certificate being presented. It will warn the user if things don’t look as they should. Another method that site owners can use to protect their clients is HSTS. This tells the browser on first visit that the site is HTTPS only and therefore the browser should only ever connect to via HTTPS for a determined length of time.Any attempt to redirect the browser to an HTTP version of the site will be stopped by the browser. The one weakness with this technology is that the browser has to have first visited the genuine site to receive the HSTS response. But if you make sure you've visited a site that supports HSTS on a trusted network, your browser will then ensure it is never redirected to HTTP.A site owner who knows they will only ever use HTTPS and uses HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) can have their website added to a HSTS preloaded list in the Chromium project. Getting your site added to that list means that Chromium will never allow an unencrypted connection to your site.

A lot of companies who deploy monitoring will often install their own root certificates on company computers. This lets the proxy devices to self-sign certificates for any domain and be trusted by the computers.HTTPS is not the silver-bullet online defence shield a lot of users believe it to be on public networks, meaning activities such as online banking and shopping are done at their own risk. While there are some additional steps you can take, you should - therefore - continue to exercise caution when using a network you don’t control and think about the type of information that you may be sharing with people you may not want to. Something for the Weekend, Sir? I’m on stage with a gun pointing at my heart. There is the sound of nervous shuffling as those sitting in the stalls squirm in their seats. Then silence: the audience quickly falls still and holds it breath. The man armed with the musket is raising the muzzle to take better aim before slowly squeezing the trigger…What? He’s ruining my bullet-catching act. It’s supposed to be the climax of an thrilling evening of astounding feats of prestidigitation, not a light-hearted moment of improv. What’s so frustrating is that I took considerable pains to set all this up, what with the years of rehearsal, hiring all the Chinese acrobats and building a time machine so that I could travel back to 1918 just for this one-off performance. And now my invited member of the audience is cocking it up.

All he had to do was inspect the gun, a fake antique (with the emphasis on “fake”), help load it and fire one shot in front of a full house of paying spectators. All I have to do is stand dramatically at the other side of the stage and pretend to catch the bullet on a china plate. Simples.Except the fellow coolly hands the old wooden-stocked gun back to one of my assistants, reaches into his coat and pulls out an Uzi sub-machine gun. Before I can point out to him that the Uzi won’t be invented for another 30 years, he has emptied the magazine in less than three seconds in the general direction of my plate.Luckily for me, I had the foresight to take a Swift MOOC a few months ago in which the course project just happened to involve writing a smartphone app to operate a time machine across Bluetooth. Yes, it seemed rather off-the-wall to me too at the time but it just goes to show there is no such thing as coincidence.

During her time in office the State Department had rules that any personal email systems have to be checked out for security, but Clinton didn't take advantage of this. When two staff members questioned the security of her email system they were told that the server had been reviewed and approved and that they should never to speak of the Secretary's personal email system again.Security fears were realized on January 9, 2011, when Clinton's email server came under attack. Her technical support advisor told operations staff someone was trying to hack us and while they did not get in i didnt [sic] want to let them have the chance to. It was attacked again the next day.The third offender was Ambassador Gration between 2011 and 2012, who also used a private email account for official business. He was politely asked to stop doing so, and when he didn’t, disciplinary charges were filed. Gration resigned before these were pursued. The OIG report isn't good news for Clinton's presidential campaign, since it contradicts several earlier statements made by the candidate and may have a bearing on whether or not criminal charges are brought. Team Clinton has so far declined to comment. It might be time for the warlocks of the Web and brewers of JavaScript to revisit their ever-burgeoning developer wish-lists and sweep away the rubbish.

Researchers from the University of Illinois have looked at how users and Website designers respond to the feature-list, and their study suggests there's a whole lot of kruft that nobody – site owners or end users – are using.Or, as El Reg would put it: your browsers and Web servers are bloating with features nobody wants, and contribute nothing but extra lines of code.As they write at Arxiv: “We find, for example, that 50 per cent of the JavaScript provided features in the web browser are never used by the top ten thousand most popular websites,” the paper states. It'll surprise nobody that at least some of the non-execution of features is down to site ad-blockers and the like, but the end result is: “83 per cent of available features are executed on less than 1 per cent of the most popular 10,000 websites.”A couple of features that the researchers found provide good examples.ALS, “ambient light events”, would let browsers respond to the light level the laptop, phone or desktop is exposed to if anybody used it. Since 14 Websites out of the 10,000 in the study used it, and since it's blocked by 100 per cent of blocking browser extensions, why not kill it off?The Encoding standard would let JavaScript code read and convert between different text encodings if anyone used it, but it's even more unloved than ALS. Nobody bothers blocking Encoding, because only one out of the 10,000 Webmasters was doing anything with it.

Iframes fall into a different category: half of the sites use iframes (because who doesn't love a popup?), but “is prevented from being executed over 77 per cent of the time”.All of this adds to the Web's security woes as well, as the table below (an extract of a much larger table from the study) shows. The study notes, “unpopular and heavily blocked features have imposed substantial security costs to the browser”.The new class of “tech support lockers” rely on tricking users into installing either a fake PC optimiser or bogus Adobe Flash update. Once loaded the malware mimicks ransomware and locks users out of their computers. Unlike Locky, CryptoWall and their ilk it doesn’t actually encrypt files on compromised Windows PCs, however.Jérôme Segura, a senior security researcher at Malwarebytes, said “tech support lockers represent a class of malware more advanced than browser locks and fake anti-virus alerts of the pre-ransomware past. This is not a fake browser pop up that can easily be terminated by killing the application or restarting the PC,” Segura writes in a blog post. “No, this is essentially a piece of malware that starts automatically, and typical Alt+F4 or Windows key tricks will not get rid of it.

One strain of tech support locker employs a subtle piece of social engineering trickery by waiting until a users restarts their computer before confronting users with a fake Windows update screen. Users are told their computers can’t be restarted normally supposedly because of an “expired license key”. Thereafter a screen locks a user out of their computer in an attempt to trick marks into phoning a support number, staffed by scammers.Victims are told that their problems can be resolved, for a fat fee of $250, Malwarebytes discovered.
The particular strain of malware - spotted and documented by independent White Hat security researcher “TheWack0lian” - marks a evolution in tech support scams, Malwarebytes’ Segura warns.“In comparison to fake (but mostly harmless) browser alerts, these Windows lockers are a real pain to get rid of and until you do so, your computer is completely unusable.... This increased sophistication means that people can not simply rely on common sense or avoid the typical cold calls from 'Microsoft'. Now they need to also have their machines protected from these attacks because scammers have already started manufacturing malware tailored for what is essentially plain and simple extortion over the phone,” he writes.

Miscreants have already begun to flog these types of lockers on Facebook, a sign that scams of this type have reached script kiddie level and are therefore likely to become commonplace in future. Previous scams along the same lines, although less sophisticated, include a BSOD ruse that surfaced last September.“There is an entire ecosystem to distribute these tech support lockers, which includes bundling them into affiliate (Pay Per Install) applications,” Segura concludes.More commentary on the scan can found in a post from security blogger David Bisson here.A keyboard combination to disable the tech support locker malware by holding Ctrl+Shift while pressing the S key, was discovered by TheWack0lian. The same white hat discovered hardcoded values for the ‘product key’: “h7c9-7c67-jb” or “g6r-qrp6-h2” or “yt-mq-6w” which may offer a means to recover from infection without paying scammers, at least in the case of this one particular strain of malware.Have you ever bothered to look at who your browser trusts? The padlock of a HTTPS connection doesn't mean anything if you can't trust the other end of the connection and its upstream signatories. Do you trust CNNIC (China Internet Network Information Centre). What about Turkistan trust or many other “who are they” type certificate authorities?

Novel design ... Microsoft's Surface Book
I found I use the touch screen only in the rare times I’m in tablet mode, though overall it’s a plus. The system comes with a stylus with clickable tip and pads. Maybe if I were an artist or spent a lot of time in tablet mode I’d use it, but after trying it a few times, the stylus became part of the detritus of pens, thumb drives, and mints in the bottom of my laptop bag. The Windows Hello facial recognition for sign-in is neat, but it doesn’t recognize me about 10 per cent of the time. It did unlock immediately for my friend Peggy, who must look enough like me.From a performance perspective it’s a good laptop, and one that I would have been happy using for my small business. It’s when I’m not using it that the big problem sets in.Whenever the system goes to sleep for a few hours or more, chances are it’s not going to wake up. These long sleep periods, such as overnight, usually result in system crashes. The start of my work day, almost every day, involves bringing my Surface Book back from an unplanned full shutdown. If I attend a few meetings then come back, it might be dead. Catch a flight to the East Coast? The laptop won’t make it.

In the three months I’ve been trying to solve this problem, I’ve found it’s so common it has a name. Sleep of Death has plagued Surface users, particularly on Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, since early this year. Searching “sleep of death Surface” on reddit.com brings up 50 relevant threads. Even more damning, the same search on Microsoft’s own support forums yields over 75,000 results; for users who don’t know the bug’s nickname, a simpler search like “Surface sleep crash” nets even more: 250,000.Sleep of Death is just what it sounds like. You leave your computer in sleep mode. When you come back, it’s shut down, and needs to be powered back up, leaving you to sift through auto-saved versions of files, hoping to avoid data corruption. This can happen whether in tablet or laptop mode, on battery power or plugged in (including docked), with or without hibernation enabled. Even if the system is set never to hibernate, long sleep is usually fatal.
Outcry ... A search on Microsoft’s support forum for “sleep of death Surface” gets over 75,000 hits
In some cases, the shutdown is worse. (“Crash” is technically the wrong word, as there is no crash dump file; it is an unplanned shutdown.) The system may end up unresponsive to the power button. This has happened to me about twice per month, leaving me to follow online instructions from Microsoft (read from my iPhone, naturally) on what to do when your “Surface won’t turn on or wake from sleep.” In the worst scenarios, my Surface Book has overheated while allegedly sleeping inside my laptop bag. This tends to happen if I close it and put it away without giving a specific sleep command.

From my experience, the best chance to avoid a crash is to close applications before allowing the Surface Book to sleep. The fewer things I leave open, the better the chance it will sleep peacefully through the night or my flight. (Despite these precautions, the longer the sleep, the more likely a crash is.) But if I’m going to close everything, I might as well shut it down. The whole point of a sleep function is to leave your work open on your computer or tablet and then have it be in the same state when you come back.Microsoft is hurt and disappointed that people would think it was trying to “trick” them with a confusing Windows 10 upgrade dialog that scheduled an upgrade without users explicitly agreeing to do so.Redmond recently created a new Windows 10 nagware reminder that presented a dialog asking you to install the OS. But if users clicked the red “X” to close the dialog - standard behaviour for dispelling a dialog without agreeing to do anything - Microsoft took that as permission for the upgrade.Redmond (via its flacks) has e-mailed The Register – and, we presume, World+Dog – to say that the UI had worked like that for ages: “the UI of our ‘your upgrade is scheduled’ notification is nothing new (including the ability to just ‘X-out’ of the notification with no further action needed to schedule your upgrade) – it’s been part of the notification UI for months” (their emphasis, not ours).

In this Knowledge Base article, Microsoft notes that “Based on customer feedback, in the most recent version of the Get Windows 10 (GWX) app, we confirm the time of your scheduled upgrade and provide you an additional opportunity for cancelling or rescheduling the upgrade.”+Comment: You'll have noticed that Microsoft didn't say it would re-write the app so that closing the app is taken as a “no”, as happens for just about every other dialog Windows offers.Or is Redmond saying users who didn't like the UI sleight-of-hand are at fault for delving into its Knowledge Base every time they find a dialog confusing? We'd expect commenters to have an opinion on this … A report by the US State Department's Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has found presidential wannabe Hillary Clinton did breach record-keeping laws – by using a personal server for work emails. The watchdog added she was not alone in the practice. The 89-page dossier [PDF] found that three senior State Department figures had broken the rules by using personal email accounts for departmental business: Colin Powell, Hilary Clinton, and Scott Gration, the US ambassador to Kenya.

General Powell, who was Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, had a private line installed in his office and used a laptop to exchange emails with colleagues and department staff. He was unable to provide copies of all emails sent to investigators. The report states that Clinton took this further and set up a private email server to handle extensive email correspondence and has handed over hard copies of around 30,000 emails handled by that system. However, she hasn't included messages from January 21, 2009, to March 17, 2009, for received messages; and from January 21, 2009, to April 12, 2009, for sent messages.Secretary Clinton should have preserved any Federal records she created and received on her personal account by printing and filing those records with the related files in the Office of the Secretary, the OIG report states. At a minimum, Secretary Clinton should have surrendered all emails dealing with Department business before leaving government service and, because she did not do so, she did not comply with the Department's policies that were implemented in accordance with the Federal Records Act.

Duo's research shows the Superfish controversy was but an extreme example of a wider security problem involving pre-installed software from multiple manufacturers. The OEM software landscape is complicated and includes a depressing amount of superfluous tools for vendor support, free software trials, and other vendor-incentivized crapware, Duo Security researchers warn. Some apps do nothing more than add a shortcut to launch your web browser to a specific site. The OOBE [out-of-box experience] is annoying to most people for a number of reasons. In addition to wasting disk space, consuming RAM, and generally degrading the user experience, OEM software often has serious implications on security. A few examples include Superfish, which abused the Windows Platform Binary Table to install persistent adware on unwitting Lenovo users' personal computers. The eDellRoot fiasco made a mess of the Windows root certificate store for Dell users. The two-factor authentication firm reckons simple enhancements like the consistent use of encryption, specifically transport layer security (TLS), would have significantly raised the bar for attackers.Dell – one high-risk vulnerability involving lack of certificate best practices, known as eDellRoot.
Hewlett Packard – two high-risk vulnerabilities that could have resulted in arbitrary code execution on affected systems. Five medium-to-low-risk vulnerabilities were also identified.
Asus – one high-risk vulnerability that allows for arbitrary code execution as well as one medium-severity local privilege-escalation flaw.

Every vendor shipped with a preinstalled update that had at least one vulnerability, resulting in arbitrary remote code execution and thereby complete compromise of the affected machine.

OEM updaters are highly privileged, easy to exploit, and not difficult to reverse engineer – coupled with limited security review, this creates a perfect storm for an attacker, Duo concludes.Duo's study of OEM updates was put together by Darren Kemp, Chris Czub and Mikhail Davidov.El Reg passed on Duo's research to Acer, Asus, HP and Lenovo with a request for comment. No word back, as yet. Dell has responded since the publication of the story to say:We are aware of the Duo Security report. As always, customer security is a top priority for Dell. And like Duo Security called out in the report, we fared comparatively well in their testing and continue to test our software to identify and fix outstanding vulnerabilities as we examine their findings more closely. We thank those in the security community like Duo Security, whose efforts help us protect our customers through coordinated vulnerability disclosure.Kit accessed included the Acer Aspire F15 (UK version); Asus TP200S and Asus TP200S (Microsoft Signature Edition); Dell Inspiron 14 (Canada version) and Dell Inspiron 15-5548 (Microsoft Signature Edition); HP Envy, HP Stream x360 (Microsoft Signature Edition) and HP Stream (UK version); and Lenovo Flex 3 and Lenovo G50-80 (UK version). The consumer electronics giant's support staff have admitted drivers for its PCs still don’t work with Microsoft's newest operating system and told customers they should simply not make the upgrade.

That’s nearly a year after Microsoft released Windows 10 and with a month to go until its successor – Windows 10 Anniversary Update – lands.Samsung’s customers have complained repeatedly during the last 12 months of being either unable to install Microsoft’s operating system on their machines or Windows 10 not working properly with components if they do succeed. However, with the one-year anniversary fast approaching it seems neither of these tech giants have succeeded in solving these persistent problems.A Register reader with a Samsung NP-R590 laptop got in touch when he couldn’t install Windows 10 and after he approached Samsung support. He complained that his Broadcom wireless card does not work with windows 10.In an email seen by The Register, our reader was told frankly by Samsung:“Honestly speaking, we don't suggest installation of Windows 10 to any Samsung laptop or PC and we are still coordinating with Microsoft regarding to this matter, Samsung's UK support said.“The Drivers that we have on our website are not yet compatible to the latest version of Windows. What we usually recommend is to keep the current Windows version and we'll update you once the Windows 10 have no more issues on any Samsung laptops and computers or even monitors.”

Samsung's email limply advised the reader to contact Microsoft directly for more information, at its Thames Valley Park campus in Berkshire, UK.The Register contacted Microsoft to find out when updated drivers for Samsung PCs and Windows 10 would be released.Microsoft only managed a boilerplate statement attributed to a spokesperson. “Microsoft and Samsung are committed to Windows 10, and are working closely together to provide the best possible Windows 10 upgrade experience,“ it said.Microsoft “encouraged” Samsung users to visit that company's own website to “ensure upgrade is supported by their PC. A Samsung spokesperson has contacted us since the publication of this story to say:We apologise for any confusion caused by a recent incident where a customer service representative mistakenly provided incorrect information about Windows 10 upgrades for Samsung notebooks. We would like to remind our customers that they can visit the Samsung website where there is detailed information on the Windows 10 upgrade applicability for each Samsung notebook model run by Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1Hands-on In its most recent quarterly earnings report, Microsoft highlighted its increasingly popular Surface line as the growth leader in its More Personal Computing line of business. Surface led the category with 61 per cent growth in constant currency, a rise driven by the top products in the line, the Surface Pro 4 tablet and the Surface Book detachable-tablet laptop.

Despite its popularity, the future of Surface — particularly the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book — may depend on Microsoft’s ability to address a reliability issue now known colloquially by an alarming number of users as “Sleep of Death.”I purchased a top-of-the-line Windows 10 Surface Book in February. With an Intel Core i7-6600U dual-core processor and 1TB of flash storage, it wasn’t cheap. The system had a base price of $3,199; configured with Office 365, a Surface Dock, and Microsoft Complete Accident Protection, I spent a bit over $4,000 (including tax). That may be a hefty price tag for a laptop, but I prefer to max out an initial configuration — not because I’m a power user or advanced gamer, but in hopes of prolonging my system’s lifespan and delaying the always painful process of migrating to a new system. The Surface Book was pleasing to use right out of the box. It balances the delicate tradeoff of having a bright, high-resolution (3,000 x 2,000-pixel) screen, driven by an Nvidia GeForce GPU, while still being lightweight (3.34 pounds, with keyboard) and sporting a long battery life. The screen detaches to become a nifty tablet — this feature usually works — though with less battery power, since one of the two batteries is in the keyboard attachment.

In verschiedenen Städten bietet Sono Motors ab Mitte August Probefahrten an.

ANZEIGE
