Computer hardware maker Asus has revealed a new motherboard with features geared specifically toward cryptocurrency miners.

Dubbed the B250 Mining Expert, the board was debuted over the weekend by Asus' Republic of Gamers, the Taiwan-based manufacturer's high-end gaming brand.

And while the product's release date and price aren't known yet, it nonetheless represents the latest signal that the mainstream hardware industry is expanding its cryptocurrency footprint. Further, the announcement comes months after Asus began rolling out GPUs designed specifically with crypto-miners in mind – aimed to take full advantage of the digital gold rush now taking place.

The B250 Mining Expert motherboard itself boasts a total of 19 PCI-Express expansion slots, compared to the 12, eight or six slots featured on competitors' products.

The idea is that cryptocurrency miners – who use computing power (and lots of electricity) to add new transactions to a blockchain, receiving newly minted coins as a reward – want to run as a many graphics cards as possible. The forthcoming board, according to the specs that are circulating, has roughly the capacity of two to three regular-sized motherboards.

The 19 expansion slots are split into three groups, each containing 24 dedicated pins. This allows the mining rig to be connected to three power supply units at once, stabilizing the rig for multi-GPU usage. The board also boasts a variety of features likely to appeal to miners, such as live visual statistics.

As previously reported by CoinDesk, other major GPU makers like Nvidia and AMD have moved in recent months to capitalize on the spike in demand for products that can be used for mining.

Earlier this month, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang issued bullish statements on the prospects for his firm's entry into the mining space, suggesting that it could be a long-term revenue driver.

So how much faster can quantum computers perform than their digital counterparts? Before purchasing their own D Wave system a few years back, Google put it through its paces and found that when the problem size got to the 500 qubit size range, the D Wave system outperformed its binary cousins by 10,000 times – a solid win in anyone's book.More recently, Google and NASA found that a D Wave 2 system with 1,097 qubits outperformed existing supercomputers by more than 3,600 times (and personal computers by 100 million x) on an optimization problem, solving it in mere seconds.
I need to point out that we shouldn't get out over our skis when it comes to quantum computing. These performance numbers I'm citing are from corner cases that hit right on the quantum sweet spot. General computing use performance still lags and programming one of these beasts is still more art than science.Still, I'm intrigued, and want to learn more about quantum computing and the D Wave boxes in particular. Is there RAID on the motherboard? How about PCIe 3? I actually did ask the RAID question in the video – and Bo didn't slap me.

StorageBod I see quite a few posts about this storage or that storage ... how it is going to change everything or has changed everything. And yet, I see little real evidence that storage usage is really changing for many. So why is this?It depends. Replacing block with object is somewhat hard. You can’t really get the performance out of it – you will struggle with the APIs especially to drive performance for random operations and partial updates.Replacing file with object is somewhat easier. Most unstructured data could happily be stored as object and it is. It’s an object called a file. I wonder how many applications even using S3 APIs treat Object Storage as anything other than a file-store, how many use some of the extended metadata capabilities? In many organisations what we want is cheaper block and file. If we can fake this by putting a gateway device in front of object storage, that’s what we will do. The object vendors have woken up to this and that is what they are doing. But if a vendor can do "native" file with some of the availability advantages of a well-written erasure coding scheme at a compelling price point, we won’t care.I’m afraid from my limited sample size; I find this is rarely the case. Most seem to want to interact with file-systems or databases for their persistence layer. Now the nature of the databases that they want interact with is changing with more becoming comfortable with NoSQL databases.

Most applications just don’t produce enough data to warrant any kind of persistence layer that requires Object or even any kind of persistence layer at all.Developers rarely care about what their storage is, they just want it to be there and work according to their needs.Only if Technology Y does not continue to develop and only if Technology X has a really good economic advantage. I do see a time when NAND could replace rotational rust for all primary storage but for secondary and tertiary storage? We might still be a way off.It also turns out that many people have a really over-inflated idea about how many IOPs their application need; there appears to be a real machismo about claiming that you need 1,000s of IOPS… when our monitoring shows that someone could write with a quill pen and still fulfil the requirement. Latency does turn out to be important – when you do your 10 IOPS, you want it to be quick. An individual gigabyte is basically free; a thousand of these is pretty cheap but a billion gigabytes is starting to get a little pricey. In my real life, I get to see a lot of people who request a terabyte of storage for a server because hell, even their laptop has this amount of storage. But for many servers, a terabyte is a huge amount of storage ... many applications just don’t have this level of requirement for persistent data. A terabyte is still a really large database for many applications – unless the application developers haven’t bothered to write a clean-up process.

Buy a calculator and factor in your true costs. Work out what compromises you might have to make and then work out what that is worth to you.You could but is it really your core business? Don’t try to compete with the web-scale companies unless you are one ... focus on providing your business with the service it requires. It changed, you should change too but there is still a role for people who want to manage the persistent data-layer in all its forms. It’s no longer storage … it’s persistence. ON-CALL+POLL Welcome again to On-Call, our weekly (and preponderantly prurient) piece in which readers share horror stories from their workplaces. This week, we're going interactive, because the situation in which reader “Flash” found himself describes an ethical dilemma The Reg feels un-qualified to address.Flash once had a gig “managing the email server for a manufacturing company in Los Angeles".Flash quickly noticed that “customers (hell, everyone) could not be trusted to type an email address correctly.” So he set up a catch-all address and every day scanned that inbox so he could send typo-blocked emails to the right person.

One day, Flash recovered an email from one sales person to another. As was his prudent habit, Flash retrieved the email. Some back story: the sales people were often on the road and were married, but not to each other. Which is why Flash's mind boggled as he read an email from the male sales person that “described in great detail the joy he had the previous day during their encounter at a motel.”The mail “went on to describe, again in great detail, every little thing he was going to do with her body during their next encounter. Absolutely nothing was left to the imagination. It could have been used as the script for a porn flick.”Reading that mail left Flash with the dilemma we need your help to solve.“I was trusted and respected by both management and rank-and-file alike,” he mailed El Reg. “I wanted everyone to continue trusting me.”Hinting to one of the parties that they should knock it off - or at least the graphic emailing - would make Flash identifiable as an email snoop and/or snitch. Correcting the mis-typed email and letting it reach its intended recipient would make him complicit in the affair and Flash didn't like the idea of that, either.

The new batch will join Sainsbury's second largest tech centre in Manchester and the move follows the addition of 480 digital and IT workers to its centres in London and Coventry.Update The University of Cambridge is due to host a cybersecurity hacking competition between the top UK universities next Saturday (23 April). The hackathon (pdf), which is expected to involve students from 10 UK universities, follows a similar exercise between the University of Cambridge and MIT last month. The latter exercise was promoted by US president Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron.Dr Frank Stajano, reader in security and privacy at the University of Cambridge's Computer Laboratory, explained that the long term aim of both exercises is to address the skills gap in cybersecurity. There has been a tremendous response from both the institutions and the students, especially when taking into account the very short time scale on which this has been organised (two months), Stajano explained.

Universities down to attend include Imperial College, Queens University Belfast, Royal Holloway, University of London, University College London and University of Oxford, among others. The university hackathon sits alongside wider initiatives such as the UK government's Cyber Security Challenge in attempting to bridge skills gap in cybersecurity. The difference is in the audience being addressed: the Cyber Security Challenge admits anyone who is not a security professional, Stajano explained. The Inter-ACE only admits candidates who are currently registered students at an ACE-CSR.Practical security exercises – such as the upcoming hackathon – need to be balanced alongside more traditional theoretical fayre in university syllabuses, according to Stajano. As an educator, I believe the role of a university is to teach timeless principles rather than the trick of the day, so I would not think highly of a hacking-oriented course that taught techniques destined to become obsolete in a couple of years, he said. On the other hand, a total disconnect between theory and practice is also wrong.I’ve always introduced my students to lockpicking at the end of my undergraduate security course, both as a metaphor and to underline that practical aspects are also relevant. It has always been enthusiastically received, and has contributed to make more students interested in security, Stajano concluded.

My quick-thinking in triggering the app just in time was simply the culmination of years of experience on the stage. Of course, what I mean by that is performing in front of other people. And what I mean by that is teaching training courses.I love my trainees – or “delegates” as we’re supposed to call you, as if you have been somehow delegated to learn new skills on someone else’s behalf – but frequently I have to deal with unexpected turn of events. This can range from being asked to teach something entirely different from what had originally been requested (which can actually be a lot more fun than teaching the same old stuff) to calming down the deranged (which is not fun at all).I could regale you with stories but won’t. Well, there was that occasion when, in front of a conference room of 30 production staff, a heckler with a broad Glaswegian accent suddenly shouted out: “This is a load of crap!”Thankfully this was in the pre-LinkedIn era, otherwise I’d have earned Skills & Endorsements in Verbal Diarrhoea, Talking Crap and Spouting Bollocks.I love them all just the same, not least because every delegate comes out the other end of my courses with new skills and higher earning potential. Even those who were angry and upset at having their professionalism questioned by the very fact of being sent on a training course will always come round in the end. Uncle Tam “what a load of crap” McVitie was particularly apologetic, I remember, and went on to achieve significant promotion at work.

But readers who have not experienced training from the trainer’s point of view may be surprised at how often we face the challenge of deliberate sabotage.Imagine you are halfway through a morning session and a delegate informs you that the scroll wheel on his mouse is not working. You move across the room to help, only to discover that the delegate in question is inexplicably using a mouse you have never seen before. You ask the delegate why he is using a different mouse. He tells you that he brought it in from his office because he prefers it. You point out that the reason the scroll wheel is not working is because his mouse does not have a scroll wheel. Here’s another scenario: a delegate informs you that his mouse is not working at all. Sure enough, you can confirm that it’s not working. This is because it has been unplugged from the PC and the cable has been slung over a corner of the delegate’s monitor.

You ask the delegate why he has unplugged his mouse. He tells you that the cable was getting in the way.Or there was that time when a senior executive booked a three-hour one-to-one session, delivered remotely across the Pacific via Citrix and video-conferencing, to preview a DAM system that we’d been customising for her company. Considerable effort had been expended in advance of the event, directing local support staff on how to install and test the system on a demo computer. At the appropriate time – 4am in London – she breezed in to the remote boardroom and insisted that the entire demo be run on her own laptop that she’d brought in from home. Better still, it was a superslim ultra-portable with no Ethernet port, fuck-all memory and a half-arsed processor with less power than a twisted rubber band. The demo eventually began two and a half hours later. To be fair, two hours of that was taken up trying to retrieve her Windows password, with which she’d recently encrypted her hard disk before promptly forgetting what it was.

So you can imagine how unfazed I was that a member of my magic show audience should swap the supplied gaffed musket for his own Uzi. To be honest, it wouldn’t have surprised me if he’d decided to throw Bowie knives or use a chainsaw instead.Unceremoniously whisked away from a potentially gruesome fate on a post-Edwardian London stage and dumped back in 2016 by my time machine, I am reminded how much the city landscape has changed over the intervening 98 years. It seems the East-End music hall in which I had been performing was destroyed by the Hun long ago, and a rag-trade sweatshop business premises was built in its place.Indeed, my worst fears are realised. In the present day, I find myself standing – still dressed in a shimmering sequinned mock-mandarin costume and holding a broken plate – in the middle of a distressed-chic startup office of thrusting incubated fintech wankers.I have been returned to a cacophony of breakout sessions on sofas, the hissing of coffee machines and the smell of t-shirts that have been slept in. Someone is flailing around with a VR headset on. I can hear someone else being Rickrolled. A stray ping-pong ball bounces off my head.

Worst of all, there are beards everywhere. It’s like a Captain Haddock cosplay contest at a Geography teachers’ convention. This week, reader “Jackson” shared the story of his time working for a very large and old three-letter-company, where he was part of a ““IT service consolidation” project that meant his client's employees could not just ask the IT team for help. Instead, their first port of call had to be the help desk. Come what may.Jackson told us the client “had a number of contracts and had civilians supporting military operations in Iraq.”Jackson helped out on the help desk from time to time, and one day decided to pick up a call solely on the basis that the incoming number looked interesting.Google I/O 2016 Google has pulled the move the software market has been waiting ages for, and built a system to run Android apps on its desktop operating system. The system works by setting up a Linux container in the Chrome operating system that runs a complete version of Android in a locked-down environment to minimize security issues. It's not an emulated version of Android, so there should be a minimum number of issues, Chrome OS team leader Kan Liu told developers at the Google I/O conference.

The big loser in all this is Google's Chrome browser. It may be the most popular browser out there, but Chrome is notoriously resource-hungry and can take up a lot of power and processing cycles. Other browser manufacturers know this and are increasingly using the issue as a stick to beat Google's browser with. Will it work? That remains to be seen. It's too early to know if Opera's battery saving tech is pushing its market share out of the single digits, and while the latest stats on Edge look good, it's doubtful they'll be a big selling point for people considering upgrading to Windows 10 in the future. HP is working on a worldwide recall of laptop batteries for the usual reason: they might overheat and catch fire. The batteries shipped with a bunch of different HP and Compaq-branded models sold between March of 2013 and August of 2015, including HP ENVY, Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion. Batteries sold as spares or replacements are also included in the recall.Since there are a lot of different barcode numbers covered by the recall, HP has posted software to check whether a unit has an at-risk battery, here.DockerCon StorageOS is a UK-based startup offering simple and automated block storage to stateless containers, giving them state and the means to run databases and other applications that need enterprise-class storage functionality without the concomitant complexity, rigidity and cost.

It runs as a container in a Linux system and provides plug-ins for other containers to use that give them easy, programmatic access to stateful storage services. The company was founded by CEO Chris Brandon, CTO Alex Chircop, product management VP Simon Croome, and engineering VP James Spurin. It is Brandon's fifth startup, others he has worked with being GreenBytes and Xsigo – both bought by Oracle – where he led the technical teams.Chircop has been global head of storage platform engineering at Goldman Sachs and head of infrastructure platform engineering at Nomura International; about as strong a traditional enterprise IT background as you could wish for.Croome led global engineering teams at Fidelity and Nomura, and web development at UBS in London. Spurin was previously the block storage product manager for Goldman Sachs and the technical lead for storage engineering at Nomura. We see lots of experience in enterprise IT and storage here. These four got together and after a year's discussion of product technology needs, architecture and design, set up StorageOS in 2015, with private investor support. What they want to provide is an enterprise-class storage platform that is simpler, faster, easier, and lower-cost to use than legacy IT storage, which they characterise as needing storage admins, slow, complex, costly and rigid. They want to provide automated storage provisioning to containers which can be instantiated and torn down many thousands of times a day.

Brandon says the company is deliberately not located in Silicon Valley, which venture capitalists expect, because Silicon Valley has an insular environment. There is lots of innovation in London, England, where several other container-focussed startups exist. The founder's thesis is that manually provided and managed storage is obviously not practical for containerised and DevOps-type environments. So, Brandon said, We built a toolset for people to store data in containers. It is agnostic about the underlying platform: bare metal, containerised, virtualised server or the cloud. The company says StorageOS, the product, is an ultra-low entry point, full enterprise functionality storage array that is integrated with VMware, Docker, AWS, and Google Cloud.StorageOS is focussed on containers for now because that is where the largest initial opportunity is located. It has four focus areas in the container arena:The product works like this: it installs as a container under Linux or a containerised OS such as CoreOS. It locates the storage accessible by its host node: direct-attached, network-attached and cloud-attached, and connected nodes. This is aggregated into a virtual, multi-node pool of block storage. Volumes are then carved out for accessing containers, (thinly) provisioned, mounted, and a database can be loaded and started. This is done in single-digit seconds, typically 2 or 3.Accessing containers use a StorageOS plug-in from Docker or Kubernetes to see the StorageOS container, and have their storage provisioning automated, accelerated and simplified.

The back-end storage itself is not accessed unless data needs to be read or written. On top of this basic provisioning there are bells and whistles adding enterprise storage-class functionality:Brandon says: There is a lot of power in the rules engine – far beyond what a traditional storage array would provide.StorageOS encourages performance by running storage for databases that runs on the same node as the app and provides local caching. The QoS comes in two forms. Basic QoS is about not exceeding thresholds for IOPS and throughput while enterprise QoS is more sophisticated, using a fair use scheduler to balance out QoS across different services and remedy the noisy neighbour problem. With the QoS features, Brandon says, admins don't have to hand-tweak containers. This set of features is variably distributed across a free edition of the software and two paid-for editions:Freemium – download at no cost and run on, for example, a laptop, and experiment with product.
Professional Version adds clustering, high-availability and caching in DRAM and flash (acceleration), deduplication, compression.
Enterprise Edition Professional Feature provides replication, encryption, migration and QoS.
Volume-based pricing will also be available.

StorageOS provides cost-reduction for public cloud users. For example, with replication in Amazon you have a compute instance running in the source environment and a second running in the target environment. With StorageOS, data is replicated to the target with no need for any compute instance there, until a fail-over occurs. This saves money.StorageOS is not limited to use by containers – it being a general and software-defined storage provisioning platform for virtualised servers and the cloud. It will have iSCSI and Fibre Channel support added, being a general software-defined storage product if customers want to treat it that way. The beta product is being released now and here is what it broadly looks like:Support for free software version customers will involve a forum and email, while paid-for customers can buy next-day and 24x7 4-hour support services.StorageOS has joined the Linux Foundation and is a board member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), where it is involved in setting up a Storage SIG and has a Kubernetes plug-in. It has also been accepted as a Docker Alliance Partner.

Moynul Haque, 21, paid about £900 in Bitcoins for the slide, barrel and recoil spring of a Glock 9mm pistol. The unnamed seller hid the parts in an antique radio and posted it to Haque from an address in Michigan. The parcel was intercepted by US customs officials, who promptly contacted the UK’s National Crime Agency. The NCA searched Haque’s home in Smethwick and seized a laptop and a small quantity of amphetamines. With the assistance of the West Midlands Police Cyber Crime Unit, they found that Haque had tried to check the status of the parcel sent from the US.Haque paid well over the odds for the parts. And his motives remain a mystery, according to local paper The Express and Star's court report.Prosecutor Philip Beardwell said: There is no evidence he was part of a network or received money to buy the parts on someone else's behalf. There is equally no evidence of any links to terror groups. It is a very curious case.According to Haque's defence counsel, he was unemployed when he purchased the gun parts – and playing a lot of video games. His somewhat reclusive client may have simply not thought through the full extent of what he is doing when ordering the parts, The Express and Star reported.

Haque pleaded guilty to the importation of firearms and possession of class B drugs. He was sentenced at Wolverhamption Crown Court on 28 June. Comment As Brexit sends London's tech sector and Silicon Roundabout into post-traumatic shock, and protesters out onto the streets of London, inventor Andrew Fentem wonders what sort of hippy free-for-all is this anyway? While some sections of the British press celebrate the Brexit vote in the UK, in the technology press there has been much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments.Forbes interviewed a clearly traumatised Brent Hoberman – of Lastminute.com fame – who seems to be in need of a reassuring cuddle: People feeling rejection. I think this is what the Leave campaign underestimated: the psychology of rejecting openness.Preening international elitists like Hoberman are exactly what Brexit voters so dislike. While the self-styled “digital elite” talk in therapy-speak about European peace, love, and understanding, they are masking their true motivation – which is the freedom to exploit low-cost mobile tech labour. Cheap labour was the top reason cited by Tech City startups for voting Remain.

Whatever happens after Brexit, tech poseurs will remain in the UK because the global elite just love London – it's a wealthy, well-connected, cool, creative city with a ready supply of precarious labour and an impressive money-laundering infrastructure.Last week, I met up with a friend who is the head of software for a large, well-known British technology company. Like a lot of the Remainers in the tech press, he was complaining that he had to do most of his recruitment abroad – such as from Eastern Europe. So I asked him what levels of salaries he was offering. The answer, it turned out, was £25k a year for junior roles. I was quite shocked. In the very early 1990s I was briefly employed as a junior coder and was paid about the going rate back then: £19k. Since those days, general compound inflation has been approximately 100 per cent, and rents have increased approximately 200 per cent. When I asked why they were offering so little, my friend replied that with the EU’s mandatory freedom of movement, the owners of the company know that they can get away with it.In the early stages of my career I was an engineering apprentice and benefited from a considerable amount of on-the-job training. Apparently British tech employers no longer feel the need to provide that, either.

Meanwhile, over at the BBC – among their deluge of Project Fear articles – was a piece about London's apparently endangered Tech City. What is most interesting about this BBC article – and is unwittinglyly ironic to the point of satire – is the image they used to illustrate the UK's thrusting tech sector. The photo is of a young man sitting alone in an empty cafe with his laptop, presumably waiting for his next tech gig. This not a picture of UK tech success – this is a picture of the precariat: no steady job, not even a desk to work at, living in cramped and expensive housing. These same young people have spent this past weekend petitioning, protesting, and marching for the right to be further exploited.Silicon Roundabout is not an economic phenomenon, it’s a lifestyle scene, and this “tech lifestyle” is underpinned by taxpayers' money. The European Union is the biggest investor in UK venture capital firms, according to Adrian Drodz of Frost & SullivanThe beneficiaries of this public money in Silicon Roundabout are simply disguising their self-interest as modernity.During these protests, I received an email from a well-known Silicon Roundabout innovation agency urging their mailing list to “Save the UK” by signing a referendum petition. I reminded a worried friend that in 1974 (when I was very small) the UK only had commercial electricity for three days a week, and sometimes after school we would just sit in the silent darkness until bedtime. Amazingly, the UK survived.

KPMG's sensible head of technology, Tudor Aw, also sought to reassure us, saying that, Technology is a sector that will only increase in importance and works without borders. He's right. Speaking personally, very few of my own activities in the high-tech sector have involved anyone in the EU; almost all of the significant collaboration offers that I have received over the years have come from the US, China, South Korea, Japan, and from within the UK. The EU has primarily been a source of legal headaches – as I explained here on The Register two weeks ago.Moving on from Brexit and the referendum, what will damage the UK more than Brexit is a continuation of the angst and disunity being driven by the losing Remain camp’s Project Fear. I suggest that, in the interests of true peace and understanding, technology entrepreneurs, VCs and pundits take a break from jetting between London, Berlin, and New York, and instead go on a Brexit Safari – taking in the delights of Grantham, Sunderland, Bolton and Merthyr Tydfil.Forget master passwords, literally. Password manager LogmeOnce has come up with a new-ish way to log into websites – selfies.

The cloud-based biz told El Reg today it has added a new PhotoLogin option which takes a photo of you and uses it to unlock the services you're trying to access. It works by getting you to take a picture of yourself on one machine – a laptop, for example – and then sends that snap to an already set-up trusted device, such as your mobile phone. If you confirm on that second device that the pic that appears is the same one that you just took, LogmeOnce authenticates your access to your online password vault, and from there you can log into other websites. Therefore, if your phone flashes up a photo that you didn't just take, you know that someone else is trying to access your vault and you can stop them. The pictures self-destruct after one minute. The big advantage to this system is that it yanks out the need to remember a complex master password and replaces it with a one-time login requiring a trusted device. Within their vaults, people can follow best practices for passwords: such as coming up with randomized passwords using upper and lowercase, numbers and punctuation, and using a different password for each website. That side of things, the use of non-password authentication, is far from new – there is a wide range of password managers on the market and security experts are increasingly advising people to use them – but the real-time use of photos is novel and potentially more secure.

Blackhat Europe Synopsys security boffin Ian Haken says un-patched PCs in enterprises are at risk of having user accounts popped and Bitlocker bypassed, in an attack he describes as trivial to perform. The attack vector, sealed off in the latest round of Redmond patches (MS15-122), affect those Windows machines that are part of network domains, notably those in enterprise fleets.Only sadistic sysadmins whose users suffer having to enter pre-boot passwords are immune, Haken says.Haken says attackers with access to a lost or stolen laptop can spoofing the relevant network domain, to set up a fake user account which matches the username for the victim's computer. The fake account needs to be set with a creation date in the past. The password set does not matter.Once the victim machine connects to the spoofed domain, Windows will throw a password reset prompt that will change the credentials in the computer's local cache. The laptop could then be disconnected from the spoofed domain and accessed using the changed credentials.Haken says in the paper Bypassing Local Windows Authentication to Defeat Full Disk [pdf] presented at BlackHat Europe the attack is not foiled by Redmond's Trusted Platform Module. Here's a sample of his thinking:

... the domain controller is remote, and since the attacker has physical control of the machine, the attacker also has control of network communication and can direct communication to an attacker-controlled mock domain controller.
Since a machine with passwordless BitLocker will transparently retrieve the decryption key and boot to the Windows login screen, Windows authentication becomes the attack surface for defeating BitLocker. There is no easy fix without Microsoft's patch. Those admins who do not or cannot apply the patches can disable local credential caching, but that means users cannot login offline. Apple CEO Tim Cook is telling customers not to expect a Mac answer to the Microsoft Surface Pro any time soon. The Apple boss said in an interview with Ireland's Independent that the Cupertino giant has no desire to merge its iOS mobile operating system and its Macintosh desktop and notebook lines with a hybrid tablet that would run OS X.

We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad. Because what that would wind up doing, or what we're worried would happen, is that neither experience would be as good as the customer wants, Cook was quoted as saying. So we want to make the best tablet in the world and the best Mac in the world. And putting those two together would not achieve either.Instead, Apple would much rather you buy both a tablet and laptop. And an iPhone and Apple Watch, while you're at it.The approach from Cook is a stark contrast to rival Microsoft, who has been making every effort possible to merge desktops, tablets, and mobile devices under the banner of Windows 10 and the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book models.Apple, meanwhile, has tossed its own entry into the enterprise tablet market with its iPad Pro. The 12.9-inch iOS slab went on sale last week and online orders are currently listing anywhere from one day to 5-7 days shipping wait. The iPad line, in general, hasn't seen the success that other Apple products have enjoyed in recent quarters. In Apple's most recent quarter, both shipments and revenues for the iPad line were down 20 per cent from the previous year.

Cook, meanwhile, has been over to Europe speaking at Trinity College Dublin and sitting down with the press to preach the virtues of various Apple devices.Teacher laptop purchase schemes in several states are under question, after a Federal Court ruling that a Victorian programme is illegal.Victorian teachers were expected to provide their own laptops, and were required to lease the machines from the Department of Education, at rates between AU$4 and $17 per fortnight, paid by automatic salary deduction. Two years after launching action in 2013, the Australian Education Union had its win in the Federal Court on Friday, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. As we reported in 2011, the state's standard four-year lease also meant teachers were paying to lug around obsolete hardware, and the state also seemed to impose an “Apple tax” of its very own. At that time, a $799 Lenovo (presumably complete with vendor spyware) was leased at $4 a fortnight, but if a teacher wanted an $899 MacBook they'd pay nearly triple the lease ($11.50).The scam scheme was protected by a Department of Education policy that forbade teachers from bringing their own machines.

Federal Court Justice Mordecai Bromberg found that practically everything about the scheme was illegal under the Fair Work Act 2009: teachers had no choice whether or not to take part in the programme, costs were excessive, and teachers didn't get fair value for their money. The decision also found that use of the equipment was for the benefit not of teachers, but of the department. If the decision stands, the Victorian Department of Education will have to repay as much as $20 million to its teachers, but the decision reaches beyond that state, since New South Wales and Western Australia operate similar programmes. A Google engineer says some discount USB Type-C converter cables are substandard and could cause damage by drawing too much juice. One of the big advantages of the USB Type-C design is never again having to guess which way up the plug has to be to fit in its hole; the other advantage is power transmission.A Type-C 1.1 laptop, phone or other device can draw up to 3A, although it should lower this to between 0.5A and 1.5A when connected to an older power source, such as a USB 2.0 Type-A charger.Googler Benson Leung has been doing some testing and the results are alarming: some cheaper converter cables and adapters are allowing too much current to flow through them.

Was ist so toll daran?

Julius Otto will durchhalten, den Winter überstehen.

Those who contribute to the campaign as individuals will need US$249 to get their hands on an Infinity and patience because it won't ship until September 2016. That's rather a long time to wait for a modestly-specced tablet, especially when those worried about obsolescence of kids' computers can pick up a Raspberry Pi Zero for the price of a coffee or landfill Android kit at supermarkets for very reasonable prices. Having already lived through one virtual reality hype cycle, I’m surprised to find that 2015 has been punctuated of a number of experiences proving that virtual reality may finally be nearing the mainstream. In February, I experienced some of the new head-mounted displays - and found first-generation Oculus Rift unimpressive. Quick on the heels of that, I got a taste of some immersive video, footage gathered by an expensive, fancy camera that capture a full sphere around the device.Watching an LA Lakers game from centre court seats, I realised virtual reality (VR) had a shot at being really big. The future of sports broadcasting will favour a mixture of ultra-high-definition broadcasting (Tokyo plans 8K resolution for their 2020 Olympics) and live, streaming immersion - provided our data networks can handle the traffic.I watched carefully as Oculus, Samsung, Sony and Valve each made their respective hardware announcements over the last few months, drawing a line under 2016 as the Year of VR Hardware.

First to market of all of these - because it’s by far the simplest - Samsung’s Gear VR launches this week around the world. Last week, from the comfort of a high-end carrier’s storefront on Istanbul’s main shopping drag, I donned the Gear VR to have a look around. In a quarter of century of work on VR systems - from those I hacked together myself, all the way to supercomputer-based products that cost millions of dollars - I had never had such a fluid VR experience. The essence of VR relies on a close coordination between the orientation of the head and what gets rendered to the screen. Sensors read the orientation, feeding that into the relevant software, which quickly updates the display. Get this wrong, and people quickly become motion sick. We’re not accustomed to any desynchronisation between our head movements and the view from our eyes - it’s a signal that we’ve eaten something that’s poisoning us, and vomiting your guts up offers a cure. How much desynchronisation people can tolerate varies from person to person. Anecdotes suggest women are more sensitive to this ‘simulator sickness’ than men, but almost everyone will begin to feel sick if the delay between head motion and display changes runs to more than a tenth of a second.

That’s going to be the big barrier for Google’s Cardboard, a wonderfully accessible bit of kit which converts your average smartphone into a full head-mounted display. Smartphones can track the position of your head, but do it slowly, and not particularly accurately. There’s never been a need for a smartphone to provide either the speed or the accuracy that might prevent people from losing their lunch. The Gear VR has those high-speed high-accuracy sensors built into the unit - sending something like 1000 updates per second to the software. That close coupling between sensor and software created a smoothness and comfort in the immersive experience that made it feel more like putting on a comfortable old shoe than strapping on a heavy, clumsy spacesuit. Everywhere I looked in that virtual world - and I looked everywhere, making quite a spectacle of myself amidst the Turks having a Saturday visit to the shops - the display followed immediately, seamlessly, and effortlessly.Considering Gear VR is quite likely to be the least capable of all of the forthcoming VR systems, it’s reasonable to predict 2016 will be very much like 1947 - the year television broadcasting was introduced across the United States. Those first sets were huge boxes with tiny displays and were a very significant purchase for most households. Still, televisions sold in the millions, and within a decade half of all American homes owned one.

That’s about to happen again, and likely just as quickly. By 2025 well over a hundred million homes in the US - and probably another two hundred million worldwide - will be equipped with consumer VR systems. They’ll be used in concert with all of the other screens that have proliferated through our world (television, laptop, tablet, smartphone, wearable) to provide an immersive experience, when people have the time, inclination or need for immersion.Yet hardware is not enough. Once people don their head-mounts, what do they see? What are they doing? At present there are only a handful of individuals anywhere in the world who have any experience creating immersive content, and almost all of that content has been one-off projects, experiments in the emerging medium. We need to be able to have an army of trained professionals - as we do in film and television and video gaming - ready to work in the production facilities of the 21st century, churning out a growing supply of content for these new devices. We don’t know how to write for immersion, or direct, or light, or use the camera, or edit, or record sound, etc. All of the skills they teach at any decent film school will need to be rediscovered, reinvented, and adapted to the new medium of immersion.

That’s not going to happen overnight. But that training ought to to start today, because demand for immersive content is going to skyrocket. A year from now we’ll likely be in a world where demand has greatly exceeded supply. That’s an opportunity - but it’s also a danger, because if people can’t find enough novelty in the immersive world, they’ll walk away from it, and the technology will once again fail to live up to the hype. Analysis Dell ships Windows computers with software that lets websites slurp up the machine's exact specifications, warranty status, and other details without the user knowing. This information can be used to build a fingerprint that potentially identifies a person while she browses across the web. It can be abused by phishers and scammers, who can quote the information to trick victims into thinking they're talking to a legit Dell employee. And, well, it's just plain rude.A website created by a bloke called Slipstream – previously in these pages for exposing security holes in UK school IT software – shows exactly how it can work. This proof-of-concept code exploits a weakness in the design of Dell's support software to access the computer's seven-character service tag – an identifier that Dell's support website uses to look up information on the machine, including the model number, installed components, and warranty data.

Visit Slip's page above to see it in action – assuming you have a Dell running Dell Foundation Services. Be warned, though, it does play some fun chiptune music, so mute your speakers if you're still at work.Slipstream says his website does not exploit the eDellRoot root CA certificate that turned up in new models of Dell laptops and PCs – but the Dell Foundation Services software that uses the dodgy cert.As documented by Duo Security, Dell Foundation Services starts up a web server on TCP port 7779 that accepts requests for the service tag.and the foundation services returns exactly that – the service tag. No authentication required. This serial code can then be fed into Dell's support site to look up information about the machine. The Register has tested the proof-of-concept site and verified that it does indeed pull up the service code on an Inspiron 15 series laptop bought in July. Slipstream also confirmed to The Reg that his script works even when the vulnerable root CA cert is removed by Dell's prescribed methods.Aside from the possibility that a scammer could use the support number to gain user trust for a phony tech support call or other security con job, the proof-of-concept demonstrates just how deeply a third party can probe into a user's system by exploiting Dell's now-notorious support tools.

The folks that built the system were retired and scattered to the winds.“Everyone in the industry advised us not to touch a thing and to walk away from the job,” WG told us.

But then, just a couple of weeks before Christmas came the request to do the job, before Christmas of course.“A less than really sharp manager agreed,” which meant that in the days before December 23rd WG “was going flat out trying to get my head round a program written by a novice programmer for an ancient logic controller in a horribly arcane language.”“Then on Christmas Eve myself and a colleague went on site to do the installation. By the way, did I mention that we couldn't do any preliminary tests because they wouldn't shut down the system until the night before?”“Initially we couldn't get the laptop to talk to the old controller. It took us several hours to work out that not only was the connecting cable non-standard wiring, but so was the communications. Eventually we got the software on, and started making cautious tests - we hadn't wired the new valve in at this point just in case there were problems.”

“First, the control sequence was not the same as what we'd been told, so that involved rewriting the program on-site to take this into account.”“Next, the original programmer liked to do 'clever' tricks with his programs. These always come back to bite you years later - and indeed we were seriously puzzled as to why variables were apparently changing themselves and screwing up our corrections.”WG and his colleague “realised the guy had discovered a way of bulk updating large blocks of data, which he'd proceeded to use enthusiastically, blissfully unaware that this also corrupted variables in the 'gaps' that he wasn't using but we were trying to!”“After this was sorted we connected up the new valve, which had been pre-wired for us, only to discover that the 'telltale' that was supposed to send back a message to tell us which way the valve was positioned wasn't changing, so we went to examine the valve itself.”Inspecting the valve mean climbing narrow metal stairs and gantries.“My colleague got there first,” WG recalls, “and came out with a burst of the most interesting invective. You see, this valve was driven by compressed air, and our electronics just supplied a trigger. This normally works fine, but you do actually have to pipe in an air supply! We then had our only short break while the factory maintenance crew frantically rigged up a temporary air line.”

Before long the valve was switching over correctly. But WG and his mate wanted to double-check to make sure all was well and when they did, found that the main plumbing had been done in reverse.“Our first thought was to just change the software so the 'off' state of the valve was reversed, only we were quickly informed that when unpowered it had to be in the open position.”The maintenance crew climbed the gantries again and, amid “much banging and swearing” went over everything in as much detail as possible.”“We weren't happy that the valve common was shared with the signal common, but weren't going to try to re-run over 70 ft of cable woven into the factory structure, so put filters on the PLC inputs and hoped.”Job done! Or so WG thought until control system's monitor died. WG thinks all the switching things off and on did for it, and fair enough after 25 years' service. One trip down into the offices to find an unused monitor later, and WG thought it was finally time to head home for some egg nogg. But first, a final test to make sure the night's work hadn't caused a problem elsewhere in the factory.

A main divert valve stuck but that had nothing to do with WG's work. But he had to hang around to make sure all was well.“We started at 8:30AM and worked through until 10:00PM without stopping, except the one time for a cup of tea and a snack (supplied by considerate shop-floor staff).WG made it home for Christmas, albeit without knowing if his work had done the trick because the client wouldn't run the whole system until the new year. His clients, however, declared themselves happy. Which was enough at the time!Have you been called out to work over the festive season? We'll be running On-Call stories every day next week, so if you've a Christmas cracker to share, send me a Christmas card. Stolen medical information is a prevalent problem across multiple industries, according to a new study by Verizon. The issue is compounded because many organisations outside of the healthcare sector do not even realise they even hold this type of data.Common sources of protected health information are employee records (including workers’ compensation claims) or information for health programs. These repositories are frequently poorly protected.Medical data loss is not just a problem for the healthcare. According to Verizon, 90 per cent of all industries have suffered a data breach that resulted in the loss of medical data, including: retail, finance, mining and educational sectors, amongst others.

Verizon’s researchers analysed 931 incidents of confirmed protected health information breaches involving more than 392 million records. The global study covered 25 countries across North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. One in five health record breaches involved privilege misuse. Staff not infrequently abused their privileges in order snoop and look at medical records health on the same local area network or on a weakly secure database server on the corporate intranet.Loss of unencrypted devices is a major problem for the healthcare industry itself. Around a third (31.3 per cent) of incidents where human error was involved in one way or another in data breaches were down to lost devices. The one positive trend in this area over the last five years is that it’s taking less time for organisations to realise they have a problem. Even so only 31 per cent of incidents are found within days: 31.25 per cent took months and 18.75 per cent took years to find.Verizon’s 2015 Protected Health Information Data Breach Report was compiled by the same team that puts together the firm's Data Breach Investigation Report, a benchmark annual study of data breaches. The health information reports focuses on the problem of medical data loss, from how it is disclosed, to who is causing it and what can be done to combat it.

We shall focus our commemoration on the IBM ThinkPad, which hit the business world in 1992 and quickly became a design favourite. The clamshell-styled black laptop was apparently modelled on a cigar box and famously incorporated a tiny red nipple joystick - officially called a Track point - for navigation around the screen.IBM sold the brand in 2005 to Lenovo and today, almost 25 years on from its launch, the ThinkPad is still black and still features the red nipple - a somewhat retro feature in 2016. We are all perfectly happy with our existing high-end technologies and aren't planning to upgrade any time soon. That's according to Accenture, which carried out a survey of 28,000 people across 28 countries, and found sluggish demand for the most popular consumer electronics. Not that we've stopped buying them: just 48 per cent of us plan to buy a new smartphone in the next year – still huge demand but demand that has fallen 20 per cent from last year. Likewise, across the board, only 30 per cent of us are planning to get a new TV, tablet or laptop: a drop of roughly 10 per cent on last year. Why are we noticeably less excited about these consumer devices? Because we're satisfied with what we've got. Most satisfying is the TV – 56 per cent; then the laptop with 49 per cent, smartphones with 47 per cent and lastly tablets with 36 per cent.

This is all very depressing for Accenture, especially since its survey is called Igniting Growth in Consumer Technology. The slowdown in the consumer technology market is irrefutable, serious and global, the group's managing director of high tech Sami Luukkonen said. The market is not about the glitzy gadgets any more – rather, it's about providing secure, innovative and practical digital services and more open collaboration. And so in a bid to keep those dollars coming in, it turned to: the internet of things! And was equally disappointed.Demand for smart goods is increasing, but only slightly (one per cent), which is not nearly enough to offset the drop in traditional electronics. So while 13 per cent of us are apparently planning to get a smart watch this year, all those Apple Watches are not going to fill iPhone-sized gaps. It's good news for smart thermostats: nine per cent of consumers are planning to ditch their beige box and pay the premium for things like the Ecobee and Nest. Eight per cent said they were planning to get virtual reality headsets – presumably because they've heard that 2016 will be the year of VR.

What's promising is that the most famous of them – the Oculus Rift – will be going into pre-order on Wednesday. What's less encouraging is that still, no one knows how much they will cost, which almost certainly means too much. And price is the biggest factor stopping us from purchasing IoT goods, according to Accenture: a whopping 62 per cent of us aren't sure they're worth the price tag. Second biggest obstacle is privacy and security concerns: 47 per cent of us aren't sure we want our highly personal information out there just waiting for a poorly patched server to provide it to the world. And there is a roughly 15 per cent uncertainty aspect with this new wave of devices: they're too complicated, they don't work right, they're clunky.Oh how IoT manufacturers must long for the day that consumers don't buy their goods because they're satisfied with what they've got. The Backup Plus Ultra Slim is claimed to be the world's thinnest 2TB mobile hard drive, being a thinner version of the existing Backup Plus Slim, which has a 2TB capacity as well. For file-sharing purposes, 200GB of Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage for two years is included. The BPUS has Lyve software bundled with it which helps users to protect ... photos and videos from their digital cameras and smartphones and automatically organises them into a single unified library accessible from any mobile device or computer.

There is additional software – the Seagate Dashboard, which offers users either one-click on-demand or customisable, scheduled backups for their devices. The BPUS box is 9.6mm thick, and Seagate says it's more than 50 per cent thinner than other 2TB drives on the market. It has a golden or platinum metal finish, designed to complement the looks of stylish computers, tablets and phones. The drive inside is likely Seagate's Ultra Mobile Technology product, which was announced as a technology in September, 2015, with two platters, a 7mm thickness, 2TB capacity, and 3.17oz weight. The rotation speed was unspecified but we think it's 5,400rpm.The LaCie Chromé is a mirror-finish desktop external drive sitting at an angle on a rounded base:It's a Neil Poulton design; he's designed other LaCie external drives, and features 2 x 500GB M.2 SATA SSDs inside the aluminium casing, with USB 3.1 gen 2 technology (10Gbit/s) with USB-C connectivity and a flash drive inside. The SSDs are in a RAID 0 configuration and the bandwidth is up to 940MB/sec.Seagate suggests two hours of 4K GoPro footage could be written to the drive in a little over one minute. You could edit hi-res video stored on this drive. It does not have a Thunderbolt interface by the way.

The USB-C connector has no up or down side and the connectors at both ends of the cable are the same. It is compatible with standard USB 3.0 (Type-A) ports via an included adapter cable. There is a fan to introduce cool air and a heat sink that draws hot air away from the SSDs.As usual with LaCie and Neil Poulton drives, the launch blurb goes into design rhapsody mode:This signature device has been designed in collaboration with acclaimed industrial designer Neil Poulton to bring uncommon sophistication to a workspace. The elevated form is an homage to a 1935 bronze statue from Constantin Brâncuși, one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century.
Once machined, the enclosure is hand assembled, then chromed to a mirror polish. Forged from solid chromed zinc, the stand securely docks the product with powerful neodymium magnets – and detaches for easy transport.Enjoy this Neil Poulton quote: The LaCie Chromé is a concept reduced to its essence: a rectangle tilted onto its corner, melting into its base like quicksilver.LaCie's Porsche Design external mobile and desktop drives also use the USB-C connector to hook up their aluminium rectangular slabs to desktop or laptop hosts. The design house is Porsche Design Group (Porsche Lizenz- und Handelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, not the VW-owned Porsche cars business). There are mobile drives in this set with 1, 2 and 4TB capacities. The desktop versions have 4, 5 and 8TB capacities.

The rounded corners, high-polish beveled edges and a sandblast finish combine to form the distinctly Porsche Design modern and elegant style.
Since 2003, LaCie and Porsche Design have worked closely to deliver products with flawless functionality in its purest form. The sports and luxury-lifestyle brand and the leading technology company complement one another, with technical influence from LaCie and an exclusive and impeccable design presented by Porsche Design.Discerning consumers value elegant design in their devices and accessories, said Dr. Christian Kurtzke, CEO, Porsche Design Group. RITA's statement says the agency was preparing a bunch of backup DVDs for destruction when it noticed that one of the cases was empty. The backups had been stored offsite at a third-party vendor's secure facility.By November 17, the agency had worked out what data was held on the missing DVD: copies of income tax documents, as well as names, addresses, social security numbers and possibly dates of birth.Individuals who may have been affected will be offered a year of free credit monitoring by Experian.News website Cleveland.com notes that it's not the first time RITA has mislaid data. In 2006 a laptop belonging to the agency was stolen from an employee's vehicle.

IDC in December reckoned on compound annual growth rate of one per cent over five years for portable PCs, and a decline of 2.5 per cent for desktops. That’s alarming for Intel, which relies on a cadence of PC sales of three years in notebooks and four for desktops to help drive sales. Also, Intel has historically relied on new releases of Windows – businesses and consumers buy fresh PCs to cope with the system demands of Microsoft’s new OS.“When people move to a new operating system they almost always do so on new hardware so it’s a benefit to us as well,” Garrison said on a trip to the UK. He estimated people are “excited” about Windows 10, released in July, a fact that will drive PCs sales and therefore mean business as usual.“What you get from your old PC versus what you can buy is a significant cost for the business, plus the PC starts to wear out and break frequently,” Garrison said. But, if Gartner and IDC are correct, Windows 10 hasn’t so far (and won’t in the near future) do anything to prompt growing PC sales.Microsoft hasn’t exactly helped by giving Windows 10 away for free to download – an offer that, at times, has seen Microsoft forcing Windows 10 on existing users. Worse, Microsoft has said there will be no new versions of Windows after Windows 10 – that it’ll be incremental updates, instead.

Garrison reckoned this won’t hurt PC sales, and the raw fact that the older a PC becomes the slower and cruddier it gets, will somehow prick the conscience of corporate IT purchasers. “Do we expect to see any change in the hardware purchase? The answer is 'no'. If they are on a three-year cycle we expect to see them still on a three-year cycle, he said.Intel won’t admit it, but Microsoft will (or has), and the author of the Windows client seems to have recognised both the implications and the limitations of its “free” policy. Microsoft will refuse to release updates for Windows 7 PCs to take advantage of new chipsets from January 2020 and January 2023 for 8.1.Whether it’s ignorance about ending support deadlines, lack of money to spend on new PCs, or just a willingness to gamble, Microsoft's dangling of the carrot hasn't forced them to upgrade in the past. It's unlikely to do so in the future. On Tuesday, the California chip giant sprung this news on the world, revealing what it seemed to be saying was a really big secret: all this time, the sixth-gen Core family, launched in September, has had brand-spanking new multi-factor authentication support, and no one knew? Blow me down with a feather.

However, the technology appears to be an extension to various security mechanisms Intel has been eking out for years. The multi-factor authentication – dubbed Intel Authenticate – hopes to do away, in part, with passwords, and is aimed at businesses, large and small. Right down at the firmware layer, the chipset stores policies and authentication data that are supposed to be safe from hackers.Authentication data could, for example, be the user's fingerprint, or a PIN. A policy could, for example, state that a recognized work-issued smartphone within close range of the machine, plus the entry of a correct PIN, is enough to log into the device. The policy could add that if the machine is not connected to a corporate network, then a smartphone within range, a valid PIN, and a valid fingerprint, read from a builtin sensor, is needed to unlock the computer. So, if you're using a laptop in the office on the corporate Wi-Fi, with your phone on the desktop within Bluetooth range, all you need to do is type in a PIN to log back into the PC. If you're in a cafe at the weekend, you'll need to provide a fingerprint to make sure you're not a thief.

Intel Authenticate embeds multi-factor authentication into hardware in the platform architecture, said Thomas Garrison, a vice president in Intel's client computing group.By doing so, the most common software based attacks that steal user credentials through viruses or malware are rendered ineffective. Intel delivers a secure PIN, a Bluetooth proximity factor with your Android or iPhone, a logical location factor with vPro systems, and fingerprint biometrics. The operating system – so far Windows 7, 8 and 10 support Intel Authenticate – has to communicate with the firmware to get the yes or no confirmation for allowing the login. The OS isn't supposed to see the fingerprint or the PIN, so it can't be stolen by code running inside the kernel or in user space. If you can't login – such as you lose your phone – you can optionally fall back to a password. It's supposed to help employees who are bad at remembering complex passwords, and IT support desks who have to do daily resets for people.Intel Authenticate uses two firmware-level systems that give security researchers and privacy activists the heebie-jeebies: Intel's Management Engine (ME), and Intel's Active Management Technology (AMT). Both of these have been around for years, work below the operating system, and are mostly invisible to the layers of software above them. They are supposed to allow sysadmins to control machines remotely, but offer other features. AMT, for example, provides the network location detection used by Intel Authenticate.

The Management Engine built into the motherboard chipset provides the secure memory area for storing policies and the user's authentication data, which aren't allowed to leave the secure area nor allowed to be tampered with unless you've got the right privileges. This is supposed to stop miscreants from setting lax policies or swiping people's login details. This is why you need a firmware download to activate Intel Authenticate; the software runs only on vPro editions of Intel's new sixth-gen Core CPUs, aka the Skylake family. The Skylake vPro parts were announced this week. This whole system appears to be an iteration of the two-factor authentication methods we've seen before in Chipzilla's business-friendly chips, such as the 2011 Sandy Bridge vPro parts, and the Broadwell vPro family in 2015. Back then, it was known as Intel Identity Protection, which provides support for two-factor authentication, such as logging in with a username, password and hardware token, or a username, password and one-time code sent to a smartphone.

Now, Intel's added Bluetooth and fingerprint-reader support, made it a bit more user-friendly, thrown in PIN codes, and voila. It might explain why these two press releases on the vPro series, a year apart, seem so similar.A Canadian widow won't have to go through the courts to get the password to her dead husband's iPad after Apple, in the face of media pressure, withdrew its insistence on legal action.Last August 72-year-old Peggy Bush lost her husband to lung cancer and, among other belongings, was left her husband's Apple laptop and iPad. But when she fired up the fondleslab she found it was password protected and her husband had neglected to write it down anywhere.I just had the iPad. I didn't touch his computer, it was too confusing to me ... I didn't realize he had a specific password I should have known about ... it just never crossed my mind, Bush told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Her daughter got in touch with Apple support and explained the situation. The customer support operators said it wouldn't be a problem – they would just need the will bequeathing the hardware to Mrs Bush, along with a death certificate. These she gathered, but when calling back the customer support representative claimed never to have heard of the case. Bush's daughter spent the next two months being given the runaround, as she put it, before an Apple staffer told her they would need a court order to hand over the password.

The government has another robo-problem on its plate, also caused by opening up policy to the wisdom of the slacktivists.Last summer the IPO sought views (pdf) on industrial scale online copyright infringement. This is mildly remarkable in itself; we don’t normally invite criminals to decide how long they should spend in prison, and sentencing has historically been left to our independent judiciary, not crowd-pleasing politicians. An independent judiciary is regarded as the hallmark of a free and open society. But let’s park that one for a moment. In the UK, punishments for criminal-scale infringement are different for physical and online infringement, with punishments for physical infringement, such as bootlegging DVDs, set higher – to a maximum of 10 years. But broadband is now ubiquitous, and you can “bootleg” online by operating a pirate site on a far greater scale and far more easily than you can copy physical DVDs.The 2005 Gowers Review recommended raising the online sentences to match the physical sentences. The consultation posed the question: “Should the maximum custodial sentence available for online and offline copyright infringement of equal seriousness be harmonised at 10 years?”

Once again, a pressure group swung into action. The law shouldn’t keep pace with technology. The Open Rights Group, while acknowledging that online infringement could lead to economic losses in the millions, argued that sentences were already too tough.Like OpenMedia, the ORG raised a scare-based campaign, advising, improbably, that:“Many internet innovators, prosumers, online creative communities that create non-profit derivative works, fandom producers, etc. All these people – many of whom technically breach copyright in their activities – could find themselves facing prison sentences if making available carried a maximum sentence of ten years.”This was indisputably incorrect. A case of industrial scale infringement meriting a custodial sentence would never be brought to a fandom producer with an audience of a few dozen fans, and made to stick. Such cases are very rare anyway. The law simply doesn't apply to these cases. However the IPO now has a problem. Altogether 28 organisations responded, with 20 supporting bringing the online law into line with physical. Eight organisations opposed. Sixty-six individuals responded. And 938 responses came from the Open Rights Group’s campaign. That’s 92 per cent of all responses.

Given that the ORG’s own response was misleading, we can conclude that many of the ORG-inspired respondents were in reality answering a question different to the one the IPO had actually posed. It’s a bit like asking the public whether grapefruit should be made illegal, and you get 1,000 respondents who are adamant that bananas shouldn’t be banned. What do you then do with replies? (There is a Two Ronnies sketch in this vein, which some older readers will remember). We gather that the IPO is weighing up how to grapple with this thorny issue. Perhaps it could it use 1/720th of the response, on the basis that even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day.And it isn’t just slacktivist NGOs. In India, the telecoms regulator TRAI has rejected more than three-quarters of the 1.8 million responses it received on a public consultation because they were auto-generated by Facebook.Either way, the strange notion that we people would participate more by doing less, but by doing less electronically, no longer looks very persuasive. Bastard Junket Watch, a website entirely devoted to plausible-sounding technical events, has sent up the email equivalent of an emergency flare. An event company which knows very little about IT (and cares even less) is hosting a five-day Service Delivery for Technical Professionals course in a month or so.

Ordinarily a course like this is about as appealing as the shower scene in a Turkish prison during stabbing season, however the company concerned DOES distinguish itself by awarding fancy looking achievement certificates at the end of the course which look impressive on the office wall.(Again) Ordinarily I usually ask the certificate printers to just ensure that the output of the printer is as adjacent to the input of the shredder as possible, however in this particular case the certificates are like gold - partly because they have gold lettering (told you they were fancy) but also because they act as a form of proof of attendance. The event company is about as interested in IT as I am in the finer points of regulation international lawn bowls' grass height, however they do put a lot of effort into their social events - which often start around the time you check in and finish about the time you check out - either from the event or life itself. They like to think of themselves as innovators. So obviously you're in need of some proof that the course was robust and worthwhile...The Junket Watch priority signal is because the Service Delivery for IT Professionals gig has an overview of Investigating case studies of Service Delivery methods in local industry - the finer print noting that the local industry they're talking about is whisky distilleries in Islay. And it's basically a five-day coach tour...

Given the company's policy of not permitting all members of a support team to be absent at the same time, the PFY and I are now engaged in an unspoken competition to be the person that the Director sends. In the words of the Highlander, there can be only one...The PFY lurches into play almost immediately, laughing at the Director's rubbish jokes and promising to upgrade the RAM on his top-of-the-line Ultrabook. He choked on his words a little when he found out that the stuff was soldered into the motherboard, but then a promise is a promise. So here we are: the PFY with his static protected needle-tip solder reworking station, the Director's laptop on the actively static-protected workdesk (which, to my knowledge has never been used since it was installed at great cost) – and me, with my paper bag to collect all the bits left over... which always happens when you take a priceless piece of kit to bits.In a rare show of sportsmanship I did point out to the PFY the wisdom of backing up the machine prior to starting work, however he just saw this as me trying to make the job take longer than he'd promised - so his hybrid solution is to plug the drive into a duplication cradle while he does the hot work. Sneaky.
