Acer Aspire 7730 Battery

What else is there to say? Well, the Z2 Tablet's infrared transmitter has been dispensed with but you still get an NFC chip and the keyboard has one too, making pairing the dock and tablet a zero-fuss operation. The Bluetooth radio has been bumped from 4.0 to 4.1 and there’s an FM radio as well. The GPS now supports Beidou as well as A-GPS and GLONASS. Oh, and the SIM slot now takes a nano rather than micro card.If you don’t baulk at the price, the Z4 Tablet is the pick of the Android tablet crop at the moment, at least as far as full-sized, 10-inch fondleslabs go.The slim profile and bantam weight are obviously appealing features, as is the 4G connectivity and rather impressive keyboard dock. The powerful chipset, visually impressive screen, strong battery life and good-for-a-tablet cameras are the icing on a pretty darned fine Android cake. Britain’s first home-brewed open source-based DAB multiplex has gone live this morning. Six services will be operating on the new mux in Brighton for nine months.

It’s less than three years since Small Scale DAB – which was conceived in a shed and generates its signal using low cost Raspberry Pi computers – was first tested, and then permitted a three month trial by Ofcom.Small Scale DAB is a low-power, open source system suitable for local transmissions to urban areas or sites. It uses a full open source stack, from the base OS (Linux) through MP2 encoding, up to multiplexing and modulation. It obviates the need for expensive cavity filters, and, of course, allows commercial or community radio to bypass the costly Arqiva multiplex. The idea was hatched by an Ofcom senior engineer and Brighton resident Rashid Mustapha in his own time. But it won backing from Daniel Nathan, chairman of Brighton station Juice 107.2, who was fed up with being obliged to pay for DAB transmissions – which is mandatory if a station wants to keep its FM licence – when there were so few listeners.

In 2008, Nathan said digital listenership was so low that the industry should move everyone to IP, skipping the DAB switchover altogether.“We were enthusiastic about the possibilities in the first place because we believed it would disrupt the status quo and highlight the outrageous cost of doing DAB the traditional way,” said Nathan.“When I first suggested its use at a radio industry digital stakeholders meeting, the idea was roundly dismissed. I was told: ‘We've looked at software-based DAB, but it’s too unstable and will never work’,” he added. However, both DCMS and Ofcom were positive about allowing the experiment – and so here we are.“The interesting thing about this approach is that unlike traditional DAB, it’s a low-cost point of entry for new broadcasters with the space to experiment and innovate – and that this is not and will never be a viable replacement technology,” Nathan cautions.“Once you wade through the digital radio snake oil, DAB is still a bit rubbish. Perhaps it’s time to abandon the idea of DAB as the universal broadcast solution for radio," added Nathan. "At a new democratic price point, the Small Scale trial suggests that it really is time to reinvent DAB as a low barrier incremental radio platform."

Let's have a look at the old-school DAB service encoders, and their Small Scale DAB equivalents:
The original 2012 test rig was a Lenovo N500 laptop running Debian Linux – but from the pictures of the mux, you can see it’s running even-lower processing power Raspberry Pis.Here’s the OFCOM technical study (PDF) into Small Scale DAB from 2013, which has a reader-friendly explanation of how it works, and what's new and different about it. You think I’m joking. Check out the following clip from the programme, in which Beats headphones are being sported by those hippest of Sixties trend-setters, Bleep and Booster.[Disclosure: I bought myself a pair of Beats in-ear phones recently in a sale and they’re OK. I am currently trying to destroy them with anti-culture by playing only early-1970s Tangerine Dream and Mike Oldfield on them. I like to think Dr Dre would be appalled.]

However, this theory doesn’t wash either: Microsoft already dominates the operating system market, most especially in the home, and Windows 10 does not stake out any new claims in that regard. Nor is Microsoft bludgeoning competitors out of the market. Giving Windows 10 away for free will not stop anybody – literally, not a single person – from switching to open source. The daftest theory I’ve heard is that offering Windows 10 for free will encourage users to move away from older versions of Windows because Microsoft wants to stop supporting them. How does that work, then? It strikes me that 99% of all support calls taken by Microsoft at the moment will be from users having trouble with Windows 10. It would surely be in Microsoft’s own interest to dissuade users from upgrading at all, and support Windows 7 until the end of time.A more compelling argument is that free software lulls users into comfort, then complacency, then reliance. Then, once you’re hooked and happy, an unexpected invoice gets slammed in your face. There was an urban myth in the 1990s that Microsoft tacitly approved the uncontrolled piracy of Word, early versions of which under Windows and Mac alike did not seem terribly interested in asking for a serial number.

Logic would suggest that Microsoft was a chump for permitting this to happen for years with only the occasional squeak of protest. Yet what actually happened was that everyone at work, at home and in university ended up using the same hokey copy of MS Word that they’d “copied off a mate”. This in turn put pressure on the likes of DisplayWrite, WordPerfect and that god-awful word processor from Lotus to differentiate themselves from Microsoft’s inadvertent freebie.Foolishly, what they did was to try and make themselves appear good value for money by adding more features. They could have tried to make the software faster or easier to use, but no, they all opted for the pizza approach: pile it high with toppings that no-one asked for, cram the lot into your face and poke it down with the handle of a wooden spoon.Don’t blame Microsoft: WordPerfect and its ilk committed slow-motion suicide. Essentially, they turned themselves into bloatware and died as a natural consequence of morbid obesity. Only then did Microsoft start getting serious about licensing. It probably wasn’t too late to go back or look elsewhere, but by then we were hooked. Word .doc files had become “a standard” and for that privilege, it was time to start paying.

So yay for free software! But it comes with a simple health warning: Microsoft is spreading the love in order to bite us all on the arse later on. Rest assured, the company will find a way to get something from all this nothing. Pic For the first time, astronomers have detected lithium spread across space at high speed by an exploding star. The eggheads hope this discovery will solve one of the chemical riddles of the universe.Using telescopes in Chile, an Italian team focused on Nova Centauri 2013, a nova whose light reached Earth two years ago. It is described as the brightest nova so far this century: it was easily visible to the naked eye on our planet. The astronomers spotted lithium streaming away from the explosion at two million kilometres per hour (1.24 million MPH).The creation of lithium in supernovae and novae has been predicted for more than 25 years, but never observed until now."It is very exciting," said team leader Luca Izzo, from the Sapienza University of Rome, "to find something that was predicted before I was born, and then first observed on my birthday in 2013!"It's thought that lithium (and other chemical elements) were formed in the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago. Older stars don't contain very much lithium, while younger stars stash up to ten times as much of the light metal, which has left some astroboffins puzzled.

It was thought that perhaps younger stars absorb their lithium from supernovae and novae. The latest observation, published in detail in Astrophysical Journal Letters this month, is significant because it lends weight to that theory."It is a very important step forward," said Massimo Della Valle, who cowrote the published paper on the findings. "If we imagine the history of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way as a big jigsaw, then lithium from novae was one of the most important and puzzling missing pieces. In addition, any model of the Big Bang can be questioned until the lithium conundrum is understood."The amount of lithium detected coming out of Nova Centauri 2013 is relatively small: it is estimated to be less than a billionth of the mass of our Sun (whose mass is just under 2,000 billion billion billion kilograms.)So, the next time you curse your failing laptop battery, don't forget to ponder where exactly those lithium ions came from – huge explosions billions of miles away, probably.

Sysadmin Blog Friday, July 31 is 2015's Systems Administrator Appreciation Day, better known as Sysadmin Day. It is a day during which sysadmins feel sad that nobody remembers there is a day dedicated to them, and they go on being as unappreciated as every other day of the year. The exception being vendors and other sysadmins; they remember to care.Marketing loves Sysadmin Day. Articles from previous years show an ever increasing number of contests, discounts, and attempts at "customer engagement." This year is no different for vendors: they're out in force. There is an uptick, however, in community-organized events. It seems that sysadmins are emerging from their cave-like abodes, venturing out underneath that great big ball of photon-spewing fusion in the sky, and actually socializing with other sysadmins in pubs all around the world. As always, my Google-fu is imperfect, and not everyone alerts El Reg about their sysadmin day plans. The following rundown of contests and community get-togethers is not remotely a comprehensive list, and I do hope that events I miss will get added to in the comments section of this article.

Perhaps the most intriguing Sysadmin Day-related bit of marketing faff is only tangentially related to Sysadmin Day at all, but there is some pretty sexy hardware on offer. Catalogic is doing a Sysadmin Day webinar all about the copy data management market in which it operates. So far, so boring, why am I bothering you with this pointless marketing tat when you can just read the articles in the hyperlinks? Well, a little birdie told me that the back quarter of the Catalogic webinar would be used to discuss the details of their VMworld home lab contest. More to the point, this home lab isn't going to be some crappy Intel NUCs and a switch. The home lab "will include a free license for ECX and a NetApp box so the lucky winner can experience for himself/herself the power of SW-defined copy data management for VMworld." Details on what, if any, compute servers will be included are sketchy at this point, but any home lab serious enough to include a NetApp box has my interest piqued. Sysadmin Day 2015 will mark the start of a contest that ends quite well for some lucky nerd.

2015 is the first year in I can't remember how long that ThinkGeek doesn't seem to be celebrating Sysadmin Day. Perhaps their marketing people are just slow this year, or perhaps this is part of ThinkGeek's ongoing strategy of trying to appeal to the mainstream and largely abandoning its "geek" base.If you were hoping to get your ThinkGeek fix on for the year, you needn't fear: Netwrix is here. $25 gift certs are the prize for the best "what stresses you out" short form. Terms and conditions aren't posted, so I have no idea who is allowed to participate.Manage Engine has fully embraced Sysadmin Day. There is the usual contest, this time based around sending e-cards to your sysadmins. 20 people will be picked from among the senders to receive $20 gift cards for Amazon. More intriguingly, ManageEngine has put together a fun picture-thingie on "sysadmin myths," seemingly sourced from a survey of their community members. The contest is open to everyone unless you live in a country that the US government doesn't like.Spiceworks is running a 12 days of sysadmas that hasn't seen as much engagement from the community as past years, but is fun nonetheless. There are sponsors listed, but what events or prizes they might be sponsoring isn't immediately evident.

VMware's popped out its second update to vSphere 6.0 and addressed a long-time vAdmin gripe by adding a new web interface that doesn't rely on old-school plugins. The new VMware Host Client is an all HTML-5 affair. The new code is derived from a “Fling” VMware posted a few weeks back (Flings are useful-but-unsupported code that VMware suggests vAdmins might want to play with) and has now made it into ESX.It's still no masterpiece of usability – as the illustration at top (or here for those reading our mobile site) attests – but is notable for two reasons. One is that VMware has remained loyal to the ancient Netscape derived NPAPI plugin standard. Moving to HTML 5 does away with that. The second is that vAdmins have often bemoaned the state of the web clients available to them. The new enhancements here will therefore be welcome. The headline feature of the vSphere update is support for 25 G and 50 G ethernet link speeds, handy for obvious reasons. There's also an upgrade to vSphere's VAIO – that's the vSphere APIs for IO Filtering, not a laptop - to better handle all-IPv6 environments.

There's half a dozen security fixes included, none toe-curling, and fixes for the usual range of small problems like “ Hostd randomly stops responding on hosts with 3D acceleration” and “ Unable to perform vMotion with VMs that has two 2TB virtual disks.”AMD's copped a little kick: its Opteron 12xx, 22xx and 82xx series CPUs are no longer supported because they're not on sale so VMware can't be bothered supporting them any more. Wouldn't happen to old Intel kit, we bet. It's a bit like paying a fortune to gain admission to a secret and exclusive members club, only to discover once you're in, that it's run by the bloke who does the pub quiz on a Tuesday night at your local... and all the bar regulars you thought you'd paid to avoid."Oh... hello, Windows. Fancy seeing you here. No, go on, tell me that unfunny story I've heard a hundred times before."Sumptuous and slightly absurd, Microsoft's Surface Book is the most expensive laptop you can get, short of ordering a 24-carat custom gold plated jobbie.

Six months after its bombastic unveiling (during which Surface chief Panos Panay looked like he was going to hit someone), it's finally washed up on these shores. And very nice it is too. As you'd expect for £2,249 including VAT (pen included), which is what the top model will set you back. (Or $3,199 in the US.)Sony never had much trouble shifting £2,000 Vaios and Microsoft has cracked it. Redmond claims to have $4.2bn extra cash in the coffers thanks to the Surface line, which is now widely imitated. You could argue (I won't, but you might) that Apple's oversized iPad Pro is Cupertino's response to the Surface – or a hedge against its continuing success. The Surface Book is a quite different proposition to the Surfaces that have come before it. It's bigger, with a 3200x2000 (267ppi) 13.5-inch display; this beast weighs 3.34lbs or 1.5kg.And its own lavish custom keyboard, which houses an Nvidia graphics unit, and an extra battery. An Nvidia GPU isn't an option for all Surface Book configurations, but it is in all the i7 configurations, and was in the model reviewed here. The inclusion of a GPU means you can't just yank it out – the software you're running might be using the Nvidia card, so there's a strange little dance where you wait for confirmation that it's OK to remove the Surface from its keyboard.

It's the graphics card, a rarity in laptops for years now, that gives it gaming and professional media editing chops. The display itself is dazzling and the sound superb. What gives the Surface Book its distinctive look – the wind blows through when it's closed – is the hinge. The trick here is using a shape memory alloy that can shape and contract. It doesn't fold back flat, which is where the other trick comes in: the machine is reversible. Lift it out, rotate it 180 degrees, and drop it back in. You've got a display tablet with the keyboard still attached. There's a dedicated Eject key for removing it, with an LED that is red if it thinks yanking away the Nvidia GPU will cause the software problems.
Because the keyboard is weighted (the battery takes care of that), it shifts the centre of gravity back, so the hallmark "woah it's going to tip backwards" that characterises all prior Surfaces doesn't apply here. That said, I suspect that the Surface ("the clipboard" in Microsoft's language) will stay docked in the keyboard almost all of the time – coming out only for movies and TV. Or in my case, for the kids to demand Fresh Paint. (Note: if you think I'm opinionated wait 'til you hear my kids' views on the design changes to Fresh Paint between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. You'll really get an earful.)

The keyboard itself is absolutely stellar for typing. The keys have a deep and firm travel, and bounce right back at you, a little like the famously clacky IBM Model M keyboards used to do. But quieter, obviously – it doesn't sound like a hundred rat traps going off at once. The Surface Book's keyboard has a key for the Context menu and weirdly, an Alt Graph (Alt Gr) key, a throwback to pre-GUI IBM PCs.The keyboard houses its own Mini Display port, an SD card slot, and two USB 3.0 ports. The keyboard is where you charge this critter, although both keyboard and "clipboard" have their own batteries. More of that in a moment.Like the display it hosts, the keyboard is made of a magnesium alloy that feels slightly other worldly. It's like a metal, but is too light to be a metal (it really is a metal, though). My only grumbles with it are that there's no island for a set of Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys. Microsoft reserves the two brightness keys for dimming the backlit keyboard – you have to use Fn + Delete and Fn + Backspace to control the screen brightness.

Microsoft tells me that the Surface Book should last for 12 hours. And here it gets complicated, because it's very hard to tell. Officially, the Surface Book discharges the capacity of the base-keyboard part first, then only when the base is low, taps into the display battery's power reservoir. Charging, it's the other way around, mostly: it charges the display part first and the base a little bit too. The reality is that based on the instrumentation, it's hard to tell. The Surface Book takes its time giving you a report on how much time you've got left. One factor is that when clipped together, the Nvidia card is in use, which saps more power. Much more so, obviously, if you're gaming. I found the power reporting let things down generally. Not only is it reluctant to give you an estimate, but the estimates vary wildly. The second screenshot is taken a few minutes after the first, with no change in workload or screen brightness.

Surface wouldn't be Surface without a few glitches. The first time I used the Eject button, it released the Display portion with a satisfying click. (Which is actually an audio file). And it worked the second time. But it hasn't worked once since. Infuriatingly, Surface Book wouldn't tell you what was causing it to maintain its Rottweiler grip on the display, the red LED merely indicating that you shouldn't. You can do a Vulcan nerve pinch to reset everything but it requires a reboot. Here's another, something the latest version of Photoshop caught. The Nvidia card actually has 1GB of RAM, but Photoshop is confused.Performance was excellent – which is to say, smooth sailing until stalled by Windows 10's randomness. Pages load incredibly fast but it just isn't as smooth as native code should be, with inexplicable, second-long freezes. (Sometimes several seconds.)This is the top-of-the-range model, but newer Intel chips are now available because it's taken so long for a UK Surface Book to... uh, Surface.I liked my time with the Surface Book, and grew to like it more as I got used to the heft and quirks. But with top performance and outstanding features in convertibles half the price, you really are paying a premium for Surface exclusivity that might make Apple blush.

An attendee at the KubeCon Kubernetes conference in London has exposed a serious lack of network security in the hotel where he was staying.Matthew Garrett, a security researcher for CoreOS and a board member of the Free Software Foundation, was in his hotel when he noticed the establishment had replaced the light switches with little Android pads to control lighting and other room functions.Being of a technical mien, he borrowed a couple of USB Ethernet adapters and set up a transparent bridge between the tablet and the wall so that his laptop could analyse the traffic between the two.Using popular protocol analyzer Wireshark he discovered that the tablet was running the Modbus control protocols, which don't use authentication controls, and after finding the IP address the tablet was using, Garrett was able to control his room's controls."Then I noticed something. My room number is 714. The IP address I was communicating with was 172.16.207.14. They wouldn't, would they? I mean yes obviously they would," he wrote in a blog post.

"It's basically as bad as it could be – once I'd figured out the gateway, I could access the control systems on every floor and query other rooms to figure out whether the lights were on or not, which strongly implies that I could control them as well."It might seem that this isn't too serious. Jokers could wake people up by turning their lights on and off in the middle of the night perhaps, but a thief could also get an idea of whether a room was occupied by checking the status of its room controls. This isn't the first time something like this has come up. In a 2014 presentation at Black Hat, researcher Jesus Molina, a former chair of the Trusted Computing Group, found he could do the same thing to all the rooms in the St Regis hotel in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.

In both cases, neither researcher tried to get into other systems on the hotel network, such as billing or reservations, but given the lamentable state of the control system it's not outside the realm of possibility that some serious damage could be done.Hotel hacking is something that's coming under increasing scrutiny by researchers and some hotel groups. Back in 2012, another Black Hat presentation showed how easy it was to reprogram electronic door keys in hotels. One hotelier then sued the manufacturer of the keys, claiming his guests had been robbed using the technique. In this article I'm going to talk about the second most important aspect of being an IT manager or engineer. “The second?” I hear you cry. Yes, the second, because the most important aspect is terribly dull and doesn't take 800 words to describe: safety. (And if you think I'm mad, ask yourself whether you'd break down the door of your secure data store to rescue the guy inside in the event of a fire).

The second most important aspect, then, is security. And that statement will annoy the hell out of business people (IT systems' purpose is to help them make money), system engineers (their purpose is to keep systems running and reliable), users (they need to be able to do their jobs efficiently and accurately and expect the systems to help them do that), customers (they want the online store to be snappy and deliver their order the same day where possible), … well, pretty much anyone. As we all know, IT is one of those areas that only really gets noticed for its negative aspects. The beancounters see it as a cost centre and want to know why we can't get another year's use from the printers (hey, if they've coped for seven years surely another one won't make a difference). The users only call IT when they can't get in, even if it's their own dumb fault for forgetting their mother's birthday and locking themselves out after three incorrect password attempts (then, given the chance, blaming IT when their mother didn't get a card).

The thing is, though, the same applies to security. And I'm not just talking about IT security – I mean security and corporate governance in general. And as with IT, the tangible benefit of security is generally pretty negligible … so let's look at some examples of how the downsides of security can completely nobble the best efforts of even the most efficient, effective parts of your company and your systems.Politeness is your enemy. There's only one sin greater than swiping yourself into the building with your electronic pass and then holding the door open for a colleague, and that's doing the same but holding the door open for a stranger. I saw someone do that when I worked in the defence industry and the stranger was a security auditor, and it wasn't pretty. Even if you've known your colleague for years, how do you know he or she wasn't fired an hour ago?

Helpfulness is also your enemy. How many times has your Service Desk reset someone's password when the latter has phoned in to say they're locked out? And how many times have the Service Desk guys thought to themselves: “I wonder if that really was John Smith”?

So geht volksnahe erneuerbare Energie!

Erregung bleiben.

No Key" eben "New Key".

In Sachen RAM ist man hier also bestens ausgestattet.

Mai.

Batterie d'ordinateur Acer Aspire 3500

Accu BOSCH AHS A

Sony VAIO VGN-AR Battery

Colourful inside and out, the Mini's 10.1-inch display showcases bright, vivid colours, making it a huge selling point.
Before we get to performance, let's talk about the bits and bobs around the side of this netbook. In the interests of saving space, things are a bit minimal -- three USB ports, VGA out, a multi-format card reader and a solitary 3.5mm jack for some headphones. There's no extra port for a microphone, so if you're always on Skype, that's something to think about before throwing down your cash. The 15.6-inch Pavilion dv6-3085ea entertainment laptop is pretty similar to some other machines in HP's range -- most notably the Pavilion dm4-1050ea -- from the price tag, right down to the pre-installed software. Does it have anything unique to offer? Let's find out.Cosmetically, the dv6-3085ea fits right in among HP's current line-up. It has a coppery-pink, metal-edged chassis, with an intricate rope design on the lid and a minimalist keyboard with isolated keys. The sturdy build quality of this machine means it's not the most portable laptop we've ever seen. That said, measuring 378 by 36 by 245mm, and weighing 2.5kg, it's still reasonably portable. One benefit of its chunky construction is that this laptop is less likely than some rivals to sustain damage while nestled in your rucksack, and you won't be plagued by pieces of plastic snapping off the whole time.

The dv6-3085ea's keyboard is comfortable and the trackpad is very large. The trackpad's click buttons are also touch-sensitive, however, so you might find yourself accidentally nudging the cursor when all you want to do is click.
Around the edges of this machine, you'll find VGA and HDMI outputs, an Ethernet port, an eSATA/USB port, a multi-format card reader, 3.5mm sockets for headphones and a mic, three more USB ports and a DVD rewritable drive. There's a 500GB, 7,200rpm hard drive on-board too. The dv6-3085ea runs on the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 Home Premium. This laptop differs from certain of its HP brethren in some pleasing ways. Firstly, the arrow keys aren't incredibly small -- they're big and perfectly usable. Secondly, there's a row of shortcut keys down the left-hand side of the keyboard, which will enable you to jump to particular services, such as email, your Web browser or a calculator.
The dv6-3085ea's coppery-pink lid is similar to that of numerous other HP laptops. It's a good 'un.
These shortcuts are useful for the most part, but, because they look exactly like normal keys, anyone used to reaching for the bottom-left of the keyboard to hit Ctrl, for example, will probably be flummoxed initially. The Qwerty keyboard layout is sacred, and adding extra buttons is something that requires careful consideration by manufacturers.

The 15.6-inch, 1,366x768-pixel display is fine, but it didn't blow us away. Colours are vibrant, but there's nothing really outstanding about this screen.Ever so recently, we reviewed the HP Envy 17-1050ea, a truly luxurious machine that offers a rather spiffy design and more grunt than a grizzled old oil-rig worker. If you like the look of that machine but fancy dialling down the extravagance, the 17.3-inch HP Pavilion dv7-4050ea might be for you. It'll set you back around ¡ê900.In terms of style, the dv7-4050ea borrows a great deal from other machines in HP's laptop range. We've seen the coppery-salmon metal chassis and intricate rope design on the lid and wrist rest before, on the HP Pavilion dm4-1050ea. Around the edges of this machine, you'll find VGA and HDMI outputs, an Ethernet jack, an eSATA/USB port, a multi-format card reader, two 3.5mm sockets for headphones and a mic, and three standard USB ports. There's a rewritable DVD drive present too, and a 500GB hard drive inside. The whole caboodle ships with the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 Professional. The dv7-4050ea's got connectivity options well covered, but we're a little dismayed that there's no Blu-ray drive in this machine. It's something we'd like to have seen considering the high cost of this laptop.

In terms of usability, the dv7-4050ea retains a few of the problems we saw in the Envy 17-1050ea. For instance, while the keyboard has plenty of space to sit in the chassis, the up and down arrow keys are hopelessly stubby, and wrapping your fingers around them is rather tricky. The rest of the keyboard is alright, however, and it's big and comfy enough that typing for extended periods should be relatively painless. The trackpad is absolutely massive, which is great, and it's satisfyingly sensitive. As with the Envy 17-1050ea, the click buttons are also touch-sensitive, so you might find yourself accidentally adjusting the cursor when all you want to do is click. The display is a strong point. Pleasingly bright, this 17.3-inch display has a maximum resolution of 1,600x900 pixels. We like seeing laptops with a 'Full HD', 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution but, that said, this particular display isn't likely to disappoint. It's bright and colours seem vivid.Ah, netbooks. In just a few short years, these popular and portable mini laptops have firmly established themselves in the modern computing hierarchy, and yet we still haven't found one with the perfect blend of battery life, a comfortable trackpad and a display that makes us cry tears of joy. Next up in our netbook auditions is the Samsung N220, available now for around ¡ê300.

The N220 makes a good first impression, thanks to its highly attractive glossy red lid, which is embossed with a Samsung logo, and finished with a tasteful chrome stripe around the edge. We reckon extracting this little beauty from your satchel will turn a few heads in the coffee shop. The machine's build quality is also excellent -- the whole package feels solid. On the inside, everything looks very... matte. There's a matte black plastic frame surrounding a matte black trackpad and keyboard, and a 10.1-inch matte display to top it all off.The display sports a maximum resolution of 1,024x600 pixels, which isn't as high as that of some similar devices. That means Web pages will render larger than they would on other displays, which in turn means you'll have to do plenty of scrolling to see the entire page. On the bright side, the matte coating on the screen really does keep reflections at bay, allowing you to keep your eyes on the action without the pesky sun spoiling your nerdy fun when you're outside.

The N220 rocks an isolated keyboard. The keys themselves are on the petite side, but the wide gaps between each button mean you're unlikely to hit the wrong one too frequently. We found typing at speed to be a perfectly pleasant experience. The trackpad is the real pi¨¨ce de r¨¦sistance. After handling a slew of netbooks with tiny, unresponsive, cramp-inducing trackpads, the N220's offering seemed a vision of loveliness. We appreciated the broad dimensions and sensitive surface of the trackpad, as well as its super-comfortable click buttons. It's a long time since we've used a trackpad this pleasant on a netbook. The N220's port selection includes an Ethernet jack, three USB ports, 3.5mm sockets for headphones and a microphone, a VGA output and a multi-format memory-card slot.We never expected to see Hannspree entering the netbook market, but, by golly, that's what it's gone and done. If you can track the Hannsbook down, you'll find that it offers a 10.1-inch screen, a 160GB hard drive and an Intel Atom CPU for around ¡ê250.

The Hannsbook scores highly when it comes to portability. All netbooks are designed to be portable, but this model is especially suited to being hurled into a rucksack and toted around on your daily adventures. That's because it measures a lean 265 by 31 by 230mm and weighs only 1.3kg.This netbook also looks pretty darn stylish. Our review sample sported a tasteful, cherry-coloured lid, with a chrome finish around the edge. Inside, it looks equally classy. It's black all over, and Hannspree has gone mental with the glossy coating, making for an interior so shiny we can only describe it as a 'shinesplosion'.Crucially, however, there's no glossy coating on the Hannsbook's 10.1-inch, 1,024x600-pixel display. This means that, when you're using this machine, you won't be bothered by annoying screen reflections caused by the sun and other light sources. Indeed, this display is very bright, so seeing what you're doing shouldn't be a problem.

The Hannsbook's keyboard is pretty large, and Hannspree hasn't opted for a crazy, space-saving layout, which is always good to see. The trackpad is on the small side, although its smooth plastic surface is more responsive than we expected.
Around the edges of the Hannsbook, you'll find a VGA output, multi-format card reader, three USB ports, an Ethernet jack and two 3.5mm sockets for headphones and a mic. There's also a 1.3-megapixel webcam built into the top of the display's frame. This netbook ships with Windows 7 Starter. A 160GB hard drive takes care of storage. That's slightly weedy, with many competing netbooks offering 250GB of storage for a similar price.

At first glance, there's a lot to like about the thin Asus UL80J-BBK5. A 14-inch screen, Core i3 processor, Nvidia Optimus graphics switching, and a DVD burner suggest a complete package in one of the thinner mainstream laptops we've seen, all for $799. There are, unfortunately, some big drawbacks. That Core i3 processor we mentioned is actually a Core i3 ULV, which operates at about half the speed as a normal Core i3. And the Nvidia Optimus graphics technology, which switches on the fly between a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 310M GPU and integrated Intel graphics, is supposed to greatly enhance battery life--and yet, the UL80J didn't do significantly better than other standard-voltage Core i3 laptops.
For gamers, this could be a strong alternative to an Alienware M11x as a consideration for a compact laptop with some gaming muscle, but for anyone else it's likely to not offer enough beyond its gaming performance for the money. The Samsung Q430-11 is a Core i5 screamer by comparison, comes with dedicated Nvidia graphics, and costs nearly the same despite outperforming the UL80J in nearly all categories.

The Asus UL80J falls into a familiar line of Asus laptops seen in previous retail laptop roundups, and we've always appreciated its slim design. Crisp angles and a combination of black plastic and aluminum give this laptop a sharp but smudge-collecting profile. The thin brushed-aluminum lid has glossy plastic on its interior surrounding the inset screen. A thin strip of brushed metal accents the otherwise plastic lower deck surrounding the keyboard. A chrome bar above the raised keyboard has dual start-up buttons, the left bringing up a Quick Start OS, the right booting Windows 7.Though the raised keyboard is efficiently laid out and has good key spacing, there's some major flex during typing. It doesn't severely affect typing quality, but the flexy feel is jarring enough to put us off the UL80J as a typer's machine. It's particularly surprising since we haven't encountered this level of flex on other Asus UL-series laptops before.

A medium-size square multitouch trackpad shares a slick brushed-metal feel, and though it controls well, it collects smudges, too. Two small, convex buttons beneath have a subtle click strength and are a bit too narrow for our tastes. The 14-inch wide-screen LED-backlit display offers a 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, standard for 14-inch laptops. Brightness and sharpness on the display were above average in quality, but we found the viewing angles to suffer when tilting the screen to share a video with others. It's suitable for movies and games, but we didn't find it exceptional.Stereo Altec Lansing speakers situated below the keyboard on a front-angled edge projected sound well and had fair range, although they couldn't hold a candle to the speaker system on the Alienware M11x.
Due largely to its size, the Asus UL80J-BBK5 doesn't have a whole lot of ports other than the standard trio of USB 2.0 and VGA/HDMI. There's no built-in Bluetooth, either. It would have been a nice addition, especially for compatibility with wireless mice and game controllers.

Laptop Battery Dell inspiron 1525

Interestingly, Samsung has used a matte rather than glossy finish on the screen. This helps to cut down hugely on reflections and makes the N210 Plus more suitable for use outdoors under direct sunlight. However, the matte finish also means colours don't look quite as punchy as they do on some glossy screens. Also, while the display's resolution of 1,024x600 pixels is reasonably good for a 10-inch netbook, its horizontal viewing angles are a little narrow for our tastes. In contrast, the keyboard is one of the best we've come across on a netbook. It uses quite large isolated keys and, because there's a decent amount of space between them, you're much less likely to accidentally hit an adjacent key when you're tapping out emails at speed. The layout is good, too. Even the 'shift' and 'return' keys are a decent size. Although the trackpad isn't the largest we've seen on a netbook, its matte surface feels fast and smooth under your fingertip. The pad supports multi-touch, which is great, but the buttons are a little on the small side.

If you're looking for a laptop that doubles as a portable home theater and game center, the Satellite M645-S4055 is worth a look. At $1,049, it's not cheap, but its specs are very competitive with offerings from other manufacturers. An upscaling DVD player, fast graphics, and excellent built-in speakers almost make up for a lack of Blu-ray player or Intel Wireless Display (we'd expect one or both for the price), and an underperforming included battery also mars the package a bit.The thick chassis of the Satellite M645-S4055 shares a lot in common with other Toshiba Satellites of late, using a slightly new design template. Both on the outer lid and throughout the keyboard deck, a raised patterned texture on the black plastic (official called Fusion X2 Finish in Charcoal) gives the unit a slightly glossy look without attracting too many fingerprints. The look seems to work better on the outer lid than on the inside, where the busy texture clashes a little with the LED-lit media keys and touch pad. Still, the patterned texture felt good under our palms; in fact, the raised palm rest seemed cooler and more comfortable than in other recent Satellites.

The included ATI integrated graphics help create a smooth video experience, but don't offer any significant graphics for games. Of course, casual and retro games should play quite well, but chances are you're not considering a ThinkPad for gaming anyway. We revisit the x100e months later in a landscape of larger-screened smartphones and cheaper, faster laptops. With a faster dual-core AMD Turion Neo X2 dual-core CPU, this tiny machine comes much closer to matching our expectations for a killer business portable, while not losing much battery life for its added muscle (although battery life still isn't a strong suit). At a starting price of $529, it costs more than its single-core cousin, but in this case the larger investment is worth it. The x100e isn't revolutionary, but it's a solid and comfortable 11.6-incher to consider for office use.

Depending on your choice of color (yes, color), the ThinkPad x100e will either blend into the pack or possibly catch a passerby by surprise. In black, this is yet another ThinkPad-like product. In its race-car-red exterior finish, however, it gains a little more flair. Either way, the smooth, clean lines around the chassis are understated and quite attractive. A simple diagonal ThinkPad logo cuts across the front corner of the lid, the only distinguishing feature. The six-cell battery doesn't bulge from the bottom but instead bulges out from the back. Increasingly, 10- and 11-inch Netbooks are getting better at integrating batteries smoothly without adding extra bulk. At least in the x100e's case, the bulge doesn't ruin the design of the front or the overall thickness, but it still seems like the battery could have been contained a little more elegantly. The x100e is also heavier, and denser, than many equivalent Netbooks (Lenovo doesn't consider the x100e to be a Netbook, but for our purposes we tend to call this class of devices a "premium Netbook").

Inside, no matter what color the outside is, it's all black. A smooth and slightly small palm rest lies under a full-size keyboard on the lower half, while the upper lid has significant bezel space above the inset matte screen to grab when opening and closing. A small power button lurks above the right side of the keyboard. Smoothly opening dual hinges let the lid open up nearly 180 degrees, which is nice for dedicated lap typers. Now, a few words on the keyboard, or shall we say an ode: simply put, it's very, very good. In terms of travel, key size, spacing, and overall comfort, this is hands-down the best Netbook-level keyboard we've ever used, and one of the best keyboards in any laptop. The x100e uses Lenovo's raised Chiclet-style ThinkPad keyboard introduced in the ThinkPad Edge 13. With gently curved and slightly concave key surfaces and gentle but solid-clicking key presses, this keyboard feels great under the fingers. Key sizes aren't shaved down, with the exception of some squished directional-arrow keys. Our one small complaint is that the keys are a little mushy, requiring full presses to register input, but we still found our typing better than average. The well-weighted palm rest is compact but offers just enough useful space for lap typing.

Our only gripe is Lenovo's insistence on putting a rubbery trackpoint control between the G, H, and B keys. The trackpoint gets in the way, and we really never use it.The multitouch pad below the keyboard is smooth to the touch but suffers a design flaw: it's too small, particularly in terms of height. Large trackpoint buttons above the trackpad limit the available space, and seriously hamper the ability to pull off multitouch gestures. There are additional buttons below the trackpad, and we would prefer to lose the redundant top buttons in favor of a better trackpad experience. The pad's preset sensitivities are a little too skittish for our tastes--the side scroll-strip jumped over pages and made browsing difficult.
The 11.6-inch matte (yes, matte) screen has a native resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, which is better than average for a sub-12-inch screen. It means Web pages don't get cut off and office apps aren't as crowded by upper toolbars. The matte screen is great, and we have to say that readability and screen clarity for text and icons seem to improve as a result. Videos look great as well, particularly in settings with a source of light that's aimed at the screen. Viewing angles are better than average, but aren't able to match how far the screen can tilt. Still, this screen is better than many we've seen.

Stereo speakers embedded on the underside of the front of this ThinkPad offer better-than-average volume but a strangely hollow audio quality. It's fine for video chat and basic audio/video playback, but isn't made for music. The Webcam had good resolution and light sensitivity in our casual use, matching what we've seen in many ThinkPad products.Ports are pared down on the x100e; not a tremendous surprise considering it's basically a Netbook at heart, but it offers less than many 11.6-inch competitors. Three USB 2.0 ports are nice, but there's no HDMI-out, an omission that's surprising. There's definitely room for extra ports on the sides of the x100e, especially since the VGA-out and power-in jacks are on the back. The right side of the x100e is nearly devoid of ports, while the left side is blanketed by a large heat vent. Bluetooth doesn't come standard, but can be added for an extra $20. A Gobi 2000 3G mobile broadband antenna with GPS can also be added for $150.

Our dual-core configuration of the x100e came with 32-bit Windows 7 Professional, a $30 extra over the base Windows 7 Home Premium. RAM starts at 1GB but is expandable up to 4GB for a total of $130; ours had 2GB for an extra $45. The hard drive on this model starts at 250GB, but a 320GB option can be added for $30. Also, it's worth noting that Lenovo's ThinkVantage suite of professional security and system management features, common to ThinkPad users, are included on the x100e.Originally, the ThinkPad x100e only came with a single-core AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 processor, but Lenovo has upped its configurations to include two dual-core processor options: an AMD Athlon Neo X2 dual-core L335 and an AMD Turion Neo X2 dual-core L625. Our x100e uses the Turion dual-core processor, which is an effective $50 upgrade over the Athlon dual-core. It's the same processor we've seen in other recent 11.6-inch ultraportables, and nets similar results in our benchmark testing. Compared with the previous x100e, this version performs much better at multitasking and at handling tasks such as video streaming. Hulu full-screen video played well, even in HD (albeit with some hiccups), and both 720p and 1080p video files looked excellent. Unfortunately, the x100e emits considerable heat from its side vents and bottom, even under normal usage. The single-core x100e exhibited these same heat issues, but the blast of heat we felt on our legs intensified even more in this configuration.

The included ATI integrated graphics help create a smooth video experience, but don't offer any significant graphics for games. Of course, casual and retro games should play quite well, but chances are you're not considering a ThinkPad for gaming anyway. We've seen our share of pink laptops, normally shamelessly hawked to the beleaguered female market, but we've never seen any that look quite as delicious as this. Rather than an eye-melting luminous shade, HP has opted for a muted pink hue with a metallic tint on the interior. It's topped off with a party-ring-like lacquer coating over the lid and underside of the netbook, which isn't something we see very often. Even the trackpad features the same pattern. To be honest, this netbook makes us want to eat a whole lot of ice cream, which is a sure hallmark of successful engineering.Portability is impressive at a petite weight of just 1.22kg. The netbook's dimensions are pretty slender, too, measuring a meagre 23 by 268 by 178mm, so hurling it into your backpack or handbag and sprinting out the door is definitely on the cards.

We're very happy with the keyboard on show here, which is one of the largest we've seen on a netbook. The great big keys and large space bar are cause for celebration, and the gaps between each button should help cut down accidental mis-presses. The individual keys feel a touch plasticky and rattly, but we don't think it's a huge issue. The pastel iced-doughnut design extends to the Mini's trackpad, which is large for a netbook but still features HP's annoying integrated-click function.
We're also in two minds about the trackpad. On the one hand, this isn't the tiny, cramped affair we see on so many netbooks, and its wide, highly sensitive mousing area might stop you developing chronic carpal tunnel in your thumbs. On the other hand, HP still insists on integrating the click buttons into the trackpad itself, so you'll frequently find yourself accidentally nudging the cursor when all you wanted to do was hit the left click. Fail. The Mini's display is a strong point. We're talking about a 10.1-inch panel with a 1024x600-pixel resolution. It's glossy, but it's also lovely and bright. Colours look vivid on this panel, so viewing photos and Web pages on this screen is a pleasure.

Samsung R720 Battery

A raised Chiclet-style keyboard, originally seen on Toshiba Netbooks but now an across-the-line standard, feels great when typing, and is also backlit. On the negative side, keys are slightly small and tightly positioned, with a glossy finish that doesn't offer great traction. A line of dedicated right-side keys for home, page up/down, and end also shorten the Enter and Shift keys, making them harder to find.Next to the power button, a row of touch-sensitive media keys positioned between the speakers control start/pause, volume, Wi-Fi on/off, and an energy-saving mode toggle. The volume button is nice to have but is not quite sensitive enough, as touch volume controls often are.The matte multitouch touch pad has good sensitivity and felt comfortable under our fingers, midsize and perfectly adequate--although it exhibited the same slightly laggy multitouch we find on many Windows 7 laptops. An odd LED above the touch pad did nothing but distract. Curved buttons on the bottom were well-sized and had a solid click. The 14-inch LED-backlit glossy 16:9 LCD display on the Satellite M645-S4055 doesn't stand out at first glance (it has a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, standard for this size), but its colors seem true, and graphics seem to pop a little more than normal. Viewing angles are also better than average; it's a very good screen.

Even better are the Harman Kardon stereo speakers, situated above the keyboard. Boomy, rich, and very good for music, they're easily some of the best we've heard on a midrange laptop. Simulated surround actually works, and the whole audio package makes this Satellite an excellent little home theater. There's even a bonus for travelers looking for a portable speaker system; it's called Toshiba Sleep and Music. When activated, this laptop can be used as a portable speaker system for a connected music player such as an iPod, activating its speakers even when the laptop's sleeping or turned off. It's a clever trick that makes the most out of those Harman Kardons. The Satellite M645-S4055 doesn't have a Blu-ray drive, but it has a slot-loading DVD burner located on the front left side of the system. A small physical button beneath ejects discs, and the included Toshiba DVD-playing software upscales content to look better than on most systems.

A 640x480-pixel Webcam offered crisp-looking resolution for video, but contrast levels favored the background and often led to overly dark faces. As befits the price of this laptop, there is an above-average collection of ports and connectivity features. Bluetooth is included, as are less-common extras such as an ExpressCard slot and an eSATA combo USB port. That port also acts as a sleep-and-charge port for recharging devices when the laptop is asleep or turned off.The CPU and GPU on this Satellite are both above-average, too. A speedy Core i5 processor handles nearly every task thrown at it pretty speedily, and offers excellent video streaming. This laptop also has an Nvidia GeForce GT330M GPU, which gave us some of the fastest-performing graphics we've seen outside of a "gaming" laptop. Unreal Tournament III ran at a blazing 105.4 frames per second at native 1,366x768-pixel resolution, beating out the HP Envy 14 by comparison. This Satellite also has Optimus automatic-switching graphics technology, which powers down the dedicated graphics automatically when not in use to conserve battery life. It's a useful trick that we're seeing in more and more laptops with graphics, and though it's nothing you'll notice (it's an invisibly working technology, after all), for laptops with graphics it's a nice add to have. We wouldn't call this Satellite a gamer's laptop, but it handles mainstream gaming extremely well.

The x100e isn't revolutionary, but it's a solid and comfortable 11.6-incher to consider for office use.Depending on your choice of color (yes, color), the ThinkPad x100e will either blend into the pack or possibly catch a passerby by surprise.

The x100e is also heavier, and denser, than many equivalent Netbooks (Lenovo doesn't consider the x100e to be a Netbook, but for our purposes we tend to call this class of devices a "premium Netbook").Inside, no matter what color the outside is, it's all black.

The trackpoint gets in the way, and we really never use it.

The multitouch pad below the keyboard is smooth to the touch but suffers a design flaw: it's too small, particularly in terms of height.

Laptop Battery for Dell grnx5

The Samsung N230 has a 10.1-inch display, which is the netbook norm. It's one of relatively few netbook screens to come with a matte finish. As a result, pictures and videos don't look quite as sexy, but you'll be able to use the netbook in just about any lighting conditions. Because the matte screen isn't highly reflective, it's even possible to use the N230 in direct sunlight. When it comes to the N130, Samsung isn't trying to dazzle you with fancy extras. Instead, it's looking to get the basic netbook ingredients right, while keeping the price down to an affordable level. Our model was supplied by Laptops Direct, where you can buy it for a shade under ¡ê230.The N130's design is quite reminiscent of Samsung's older N310 thanks to its very rounded corners and tapered edges. However, it lacks the N310's funky rubberised finish, making do with a pretty standard matte black paint job. Unfortunately, this makes it looks a tad plasticky and means the design falls flat. Nevertheless, the netbook feels quite solid, especially as there's very little flex in either the lid or the keyboard. Its petite dimensions and lightweight body make it ideal for computing on the move.

Its matte black paint job and rounded corners don't look as funky as the rubberised finish of the N310.The 10.1-inch screen is obviously quite small, but its resolution of 1,024x600 pixels is fairly good for a display of this size. Samsung has decided against using a glossy finish, so instead you get a matte display that's much better at reducing glare. As a result, the screen is a great deal easier to read when you're using it outdoors under direct sunlight, or indoors with bright lights overhead. The LED backlighting helps the screen look bright and, although colours aren't quite as in-your-face as some glossy displays, they do look very natural. The viewing angles are rather wide, which comes in handy if you want to share a movie with a friend while travelling. As with most netbooks, the N130 has a webcam perched above the screen and a built-in microphone, so you can use it to make video calls with software such as Skype.

Samsung was one of the first companies to create a decent netbook-sized keyboard, and it's obviously put its experience to good use here. Despite the small size of the chassis, the keyboard has reasonably large keys and the layout doesn't feel too cramped. The tapered keys have a fast and responsive action, so with some practice you can quickly reach a normal typing speed. The trackpad is a little on the small side, but it does support multi-touch. This means you can use multi-touch gestures, such as pinch-to-zoom and swivel, for zooming or rotating pictures in Windows Photo Gallery and other applications. There are drawbacks, however: at $860, this laptop isn't cheap. And, most unfortunately, the Core i3 CPU that's included is misleading: it's actually a lower-speed Core i3-330UM ultralow-voltage processor that performs more slowly than a normal Core i3. And the Nvidia Optimus graphics technology, which switches on the fly between a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 310M GPU and integrated Intel graphics, is supposed to greatly enhance battery life--and yet, the UL80JT-A1 didn't do significantly better than other standard-voltage Core i3 laptops in our testing.

Sure, for its size this might be an appealing laptop for some. However, the price-to-performance ratio factored in with so-so battery life make this a disappointing package from Asus. (Note: in our back-to-school retail laptop roundup we reviewed the Asus UL80J-BBK5, a nearly identical retail version of this laptop which was slightly less expensive.)The Asus UL80JT-A1 is part of a family of slim Asus laptops that we've generally liked quite a bit since their inception, going back to the UL30A. Crisp angles and a combination of black plastic and aluminum give this laptop a sharp but smudge-collecting profile. The thin brushed-aluminum lid has glossy plastic on its interior surrounding the inset screen. The keyboard area is decked with brushed-metal-like smooth black plastic. Two separate chromed plastic buttons on the top left and right of the keyboard create a bit of confusion as to which is the actual power button: the left one boots up Asus' Quick Start OS, the right boots Windows 7.While the raised keyboard is efficiently laid out and has good key spacing, there's some major flex during typing. It doesn't severely affect typing quality, but the flexy feel is jarring enough to put us off the UL80JT-A1 as a serious typist's machine. It's particularly surprising since we haven't encountered this level of flex on other Asus UL-series laptops before.

The medium-sized multitouch touch pad is a bit small for the available space, but the textured grid makes for better finger traction than on its very similar retail cousin, the UL80J-BBK5. On the other hand, the chrome rocker button bar is a bit narrow, and we prefer discrete buttons. The 14-inch wide-screen LED-backlit display offers a 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, standard for 14-inch laptops. Brightness and sharpness on the display were above average in quality, but we found the viewing angles to suffer when tilting the screen to share a video with others. It's suitable for movies and games, but we didn't find it exceptional.
Stereo Altec Lansing speakers situated below the keyboard on a front angled edge projected sound well and had fair range, although they couldn't hold a candle to the speaker system on the Alienware M11x. They didn't live up to the branding hype. A 0.3-megapixel Webcam does the job for basic chat, but it wasn't exceptional, either.
Although thin, the UL80JT-A1 manages to fit a good standard collection of ports, including HDMI-out and 3 USB 2.0 ports, along with making room for a DVD drive door. There isn't an ExpressCard slot, however, and the system lacks Bluetooth.

The UL80JT-A1 comes with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 500GB 5,400rpm hard drive, both of which are at the upper end of basic mainstream offerings. However, while that used to seem special a few months ago, it's fast becoming standard. We've seen previous iterations of a very similar Asus laptop design, using last-gen processors and graphics. The Asus UL50VT-RBBBK05 had a Core 2 Duo ULV processor and physically switchable Nvidia graphics, and at the time we lamented that the machine didn't have better performance for its size. Sadly, even though Asus has upgraded to a new Intel Core i3 ULV processor, the UL80JT-A1 isn't significantly different in terms of performance from its Core 2 ULV predecessor--in fact, by our benchmarks, it's slower. That's because, as we mentioned, the included i3 processor is actually an ultralow-voltage variant that runs at half the speed of standard-voltage Core i3s. But, it's actually a bit worse than that. A "Turbo 33" mode can be toggled via an Asus widget to overclock the performance of the CPU up to 1.86GHz and increase the RAM speed up to 1,066MHz. We did see gains in this mode: 1,406 seconds improved to 1,106 seconds in our multimedia multitasking test (lower time scores indicate better performance). Unfortunately, that only brought the UL80JT-A1 up to speed with the standard performance we saw on the identically specced UL80J-BBK5 (it performed the same multitasking test in 1,122 seconds), which lacked a "Turbo" mode but was equally fast. Even though Turbo feels like a feature, it's really just a way of hobbling the system speed further when unused.

The speed gap shows up clearly on our benchmarks, where the UL80JT-A1 simply doesn't offer as much as any other equivalent Core i3 laptop, as well as lagging behind its Core 2 ULV predecessor. Admittedly, the UL80JT-A1 is still functionally fine for video streaming and handling nearly all everyday tasks we could think of: it just feels more sluggish and can't handle multitasking as adeptly. We particularly feel it's misleading because the sticker on the front of the laptop boasts "Core i3" without specifying that it's in fact a slower-functioning variant. On the other hand, the included graphics perform well. The included Nvidia GeForce 310M GPU amounts to entry-level graphics, but it at least allowed for some playable gaming. Unreal Tournament 3 ran at 63.9 frames per second at native 1,366x768-pixel resolution with graphics settings set to medium, bumped up to 77.2 frames per second in Turbo mode. The Asus UL80JT-A1 also has Nvidia's Optimus graphics-switching technology, which seamlessly switches between the GeForce 310M GPU and integrated Intel graphics to conserve battery life. That's a great idea in theory, but we still didn't find the Asus UL80JT-A1 to have great battery life

Acer has used Intel's low-cost i3 processor to good effect in the Aspire 5741 to create a well specified, mid-sized laptop with a very attractive price tag. Our review model was supplied by Save on Laptops, where you can buy the 5741 for just ¡ê447.48.The laptop is surprisingly portable for a 15-inch model -- it weighs in at a relatively lightweight 2.5kg. It's thin, too, at just 34mm. Despite the budget price tag, Acer has managed to bring a touch of style to the design. For example, although the lid is made of plastic, it's finished with an industrial-style cross-hatch pattern and aluminium paint job. The good looks continue when you flip open the laptop, with a pleasing brushed metal effect on the wrist rest. This is complemented nicely by the glossy finish of the screen surround.
The screen itself is 15.6 inches in size and has a resolution of 1356x768 pixels, which is pretty standard for budget laptops of this size. The display uses LED backlighting and has a shiny finish, so colours look bright and in your face. The laptop's black levels are impressively deep, which is somewhat surprising for a budget display. This deepness makes movies look extremely rich and cinematic. Acer has also integrated a webcam above the screen, which comes in handy for making video calls with applications such as the preloaded Skype software.

The Aspire 5741's keys seem to float above the surface of the keyboard.
The keyboard has flat keys, similar to those of an isolated key design. Rather than looking as if they've been punched out of the chassis, the keys seem to float above it as if they are suspended in air. The keyboard layout is excellent and Acer has even found room to include a numerical keypad on the right-hand side. The only real compromise is the half-sized cursor keys, but this isn't too much of an issue. In saying that, the keys don't feel as solid as you might expect, although they are quite springy and respond well to even light taps. When we looked at the Samsung N210 model back in May, we were so impressed that we gave it an Editors' Choice Award, so this Plus model has a great deal to live up to. Priced at around ¡ê280, the Samsung N210 Plus is a little cheaper than the N210 was at launch.Like its predecessor, the N210 Plus has a more grown-up feel than many of the other 10-inch netbooks on the market at the moment. The glossy grey finish on the lid, combined with the chrome trim that runs around the edge of the screen and keyboard, make it look much more like a business-focused ultra-portable than a consumer netbook. Like most netbooks, the N210 Plus is very light at 1.28kg (in fact it's lighter than the previous model) and, as it measures just 265 by 189 by 36mm, it's certainly small enough to chuck in a backpack without weighing you down.

HP HSTNN-DB04 Battery

As its name would suggest, the laptop uses a 13.3-inch screen. This has a resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, which isn't bad for a screen of this size, and its LED backlighting means it looks very bright as well. The vertical viewing angle is rather narrow, though, so you do sometimes find yourself moving the screen back and forth on the hinge to find the sweet spot where colours and brightness remain consistent across the surface of the display. As the laptop is aimed primarily at business users, Dell has sensibly used a matte, anti-glare finish on the screen, helping to keep reflections to a minimum.
The slim chassis means there's only room for two USB ports.
The screen may have its issues, but we've got no complaints about the keyboard. As it fills practically the whole width of the laptop, the keys are pleasingly large. There's almost no flex in the middle and this, combined with the springy nature of the keys, makes it easy to quickly get up to a decent typing speed. There's no room to fit in a numerical keyboard, but, other than this, the layout is excellent, with the only slight compromise being half-height 'F' keys across the top.Business users often aren't interested in flashy designs, instead preferring a laptop that looks and feels like it'll stand up to some abuse, while also offering good levels of performance. This is the niche that the robust, 14-inch Toshiba Tecra M11 aims to fill. Our configuration, the M11-11M, is priced at around ¡ê960 and powered by a high-end Intel Core i7-620M processor.

The M11 has a relatively boxy design. It weighs a not inconsiderable 2.4kg and is a hefty 37mm thick, so it doesn't exactly fit into the slim-and-light category. Nevertheless, its 14-inch frame does make it relatively portable. It's available in any colour as long as it's black, but the dimpled texture used on the lid and keyboard surround is much less likely to show up scratches than the glossy finish you find on most consumer laptops. While the overall design may not be eye-catching, the laptop's build quality can't be called into question. It feels very solid when you pick it up and, even when you apply twisting force to the chassis, it doesn't bend or creak. This excellent build quality also extends to the keyboard -- there's very little flex in it, even when you push down hard on the centre. Sensibly, Toshiba has stuck with traditional, large, tapered-style keys that have a decent amount of travel. The layout is good too, with the only compromise being a slightly narrow return key. You soon get used to this, though.
Like Lenovo's ThinkPad laptops, the M11 has both a trackpad and pointing device. The trackpad isn't overly large, but it feels fast and smooth under your finger, and the chrome buttons are quite responsive, although they do attract fingerprint smudges. We had no problems with the pointing stick either, and there's an extra set of buttons above the trackpad to use with this.

The M11 is pre-loaded with Toshiba's power-saving Eco Utility software.
Toshiba has wisely steered clear of the glossy finish that you find on most laptop displays these days, instead using a screen with a matte, anti-glare coating. This is much easier on your eyes when you're putting in long periods working on Office documents. The screen is LED-backlit, so it's very bright and colours are impressively vivid. The display's resolution of 1,366x768 pixels is bog-standard, but, as it's a smaller, 14-inch screen, text and graphics still look crisp and sharp. The laptop supports Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, but the range of ports on offer is limited. There are only three USB ports, for example, although one of these doubles up as an eSATA port. The laptop also has both a standard VGA socket and a mini-DisplayPort connector for hooking it up to an external display, as well as an ExpressCard/34 slot. The front lip is home to a handy memory-card slot, too. The $999 price represents the high end of today's mainstream retail market. While getting this level of graphics power at that price isn't bad, the boring design, lack of other features like Intel Wireless Display or Blu-ray, and poor battery life suggest you could do better.

Despite being marketed as a "media notebook" by Asus, there's not much that really makes this any more of a media notebook than other 14-inch machines. That's not to say the performance wasn't solid--it just isn't particularly noteworthy in a sea of increasingly similar Core i5 laptops, except for including a high-speed USB 3.0 port.In fact, some of its ergonomics set it back from the competition. Honestly, despite processor limitations, we'd rather buy an HP Envy 14 or white Apple MacBook instead. From the outside, there isn't much to distinguish the Asus N82Jv-X1 apart from its outer shell. A copper-colored metallic Infusion finish design has a textured hexagonal grid pattern, and undeniably gives the laptop a nice look. The rest is black matte plastic. Tapered, slightly curved edges invoke the rest of the Asus laptops, particularly the Eee PC series, as if it were magnified into a full-size form. The base is thicker than it looks, hiding some bulk under smartly angled fore-edges. At 5 pounds, it's not a lightweight. The inner areas of the laptop look clean and attractive, but it's more a feat of minimalism than features. The whole lower deck is sunken in from its edges, giving it a slightly concave look. Smooth, bronze-black plastic surrounds a raised Chiclet-style Asus keyboard. Above the keyboard, a pair of symmetrical identical buttons acts as a power button and a battery-mode selector. It's confusing at first glance: why not simply make the power button look more distinct? There's no reason for symmetry this subtle (hint: the power button's the right-side one).

The keyboard's a standard Asus affair, though dipping below average in key feel and keyboard flex. The slightly wobbly keys were more flimsy-feeling than those on other models. A row of page up/down keys lining the keyboard's right side crowds the shift and return keys, as does the small T of arrow keys. It made us lose sense of where the keys were. Functions such as volume and brightness are relegated to function keys, and they require pressing the function button at the same time to work. At this point, all laptops should have distinct or function-reverse keys for volume and other basic controls. The medium-size and slightly recessed touch pad is saddled with a small rocker bar for buttons, but both the bar and the pad's patterned/textured surface worked quite well for us. If only this pad had true multitouch: instead of Synaptics, Elan software enables two-finger scrolling and multifinger tap, but it doesn't have pinch-to-zoom at all. Thus, it doesn't really feel like multitouch.
The 14-inch LED-backlit 16:9 glossy screen on the Asus N82Jv-X1 has a native pixel resolution of 1,366x768, which is standard for laptops this size. Web pages, videos, pictures and icons were readable, but the screen looked a little washed out at full brightness and suffered from weak side-viewing angles.

The Altec-Lansing stereo speakers, which are embedded in the bottom of the laptop facing forward on an angled edge, had limited volume and weren't nearly as musically impressive as Toshiba's Harman Kardon speakers on that brand's comparative midrange Satellites. The built-in Webcam has resolution settings up to 1,600x1,200, but its framerates dip to unusable levels that high--it's best used at 640x480 or 800x600 resolutions. Asus' included webcam software, called Lifeframe, has an astonishing number of innovative and flat-out silly settings, ranging from complete picture setting control to weird floating hats. It's as much a novelty photo booth as a communications tool.Asus includes some other custom software on the N82Jv-X1, most of it not truly necessary. ControlDeck offers a 3D-style method of browsing applications by category, but the process is no more or less clunky than simply browsing Windows 7.

The most notable feature on the Asus N82Jv-X1 is its single USB 3.0 port. While Asus proudly advertises 10x faster speeds on the sticker slapped on the keyboard deck, there are only a handful of peripherals that can even take advantage of USB 3.0 at this point. It's nice to have a bit of future-proofing, but don't expect to get a lot out of it until sometime next year. The eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port, also provided, will likely be a better stand-in in the meantime. There's no Bluetooth, nor is there an ExpressCard slot; in a nearly thousand-dollar laptop, we'd expect one or both. The Asus N82Jv-X1 is a zippy machine, but no more or less than other Core i5 laptops in its class. The Core i5 M450 CPU is great at handling nearly everything thrown at it and multitasking like a pro; it's nearly the perfect midrange CPU at this point in the laptop world. High-def video streaming, complex office projects, file converting, and many other tasks will be pulled off without a sweat.

This Asus laptop also has above-average Nvidia graphics, equipped with automatically switching Nvidia Optimus technology to boot. Optimus turns off the dedicated Nvidia GeForce GT335M GPU when it's not in use, switching over to integrated Intel graphics automatically to conserve a little battery life. It's an invisible process, though, which you aren't likely to notice unless you start fiddling with the Nvidia control panel and tweak the settings--which you don't need to do. The graphics are quite good--Unreal Tournament III played at a fiery 98.1 frames per second at native 1,366x768 pixel resolution and medium settings. This can be a great laptop for playing most games, although it's not as good as higher-end gaming rigs. Still, for $999 it's one of this laptop's most compelling pluses. The N230 isn't ugly by any stretch of the imagination, but it looks much the same as any of the Samsung netbooks currently on the market. It sports a familiar glossy black lid, the main function of which seems to be to attract fingerprint smudges. Samsung's used a slightly more attractive, matte black finish on the keyboard section, though, and a black, brushed-metal effect on the wrist pad, so it's not all bad news.

Keyboards are a real source of disappointment on many netbooks. Luckily, Samsung's fitted the N230 with a top-quality keyboard. It uses isolated keys, with each button surrounded by a small sea of plastic. There's plenty of room between every key and its neighbours, so it's easy to hit each button without striking adjacent ones. The N230 doesn't pack many surprises as far as connectivity is concerned. It has one VGA video-output port, an Ethernet port, and headphone and mic jacks. Samsung's also thrown in an SD memory-card reader on the front edge, which works brilliantly for copying pictures over from a digital camera or mobile phone.
The isolated keys make it a pleasure to bash out missives.
The machine's USB ports are arguably the most interesting aspect of its connectivity. It has three of these but one can be used to charge your USB devices -- mobile phones, iPods and so on -- without the laptop being switched on. As you can imagine, this comes in handy when travelling, or when you don't want to have your laptop switched on simply to charge a gadget.
