Have a fun year ahead. Study hard, play harder!

Built for small-to-medium-size businesses with big requirements and modest budgets, the ThinkPad L460 offers a great mix of durability, security and usability, all at an affordable price. Starting at $692 ($1,056 as configured), this 14-inch laptop is less expensive than Lenovo's ThinkPad T460 and competitors like the Dell Latitude E7470, but still offers a sharp screen, best-in-class keyboard, MIL-SPEC-tested chassis and more than 12 hours of endurance. The ThinkPad L460 cuts a couple of corners, but provides first-class productivity and plenty of value for the money.

The ThinkPad L460 has the same, simple, black aesthetic as most of Lenovo's other business laptops, but it is made of cheaper-looking material than its more expensive siblings. Where the ThinkPad T460 has a smooth, glass-fiber-reinforced chassis, the L460's ABS/PC plastic chassis has a rough surface that just doesn't have the same, premium feel. However, the body feels very solid and sturdy, with hinges that seem especially tight.Though light enough to carry around all day, Lenovo's laptop is noticeably thicker and heavier than both its competitors and its slightly pricier sibling. The L460 measures 13.34 x 9.23 x 0.95 inches and weighs 4 pounds with its three-cell battery, or 4.4 pounds with its optional six-cell battery. The Lenovo ThinkPad T460 is 0.12 inches thinner and 0.4 pounds lighter, weighing 3.8/4.2 pounds with its three- and six-cell battery options. Dell's Latitude E7470 (3.13 pounds, 13.19 x 9.13 x 0.74 inches) out-slims both Lenovos, while Toshiba's Tecra A40-C (4 pounds, 13.4 x 9.6 x 0.94 inches) is about the same size as the L460.

The ThinkPad L460 is designed to withstand some abuse. According to Lenovo, the laptop has passed MIL-SPEC 810G tests for extreme temperatures, shocks and vibrations. Like all ThinkPads, it has also undergone internal bump and stress tests to make sure it can handle getting knocked around as you travel. The spill-resistant keyboard takes small water splashes and drain them out of a hole in the bottom of the system.IT managers will appreciate the ThinkPad L460's solid security features, including TPM encryption and optional Intel vPro manageability. You can also configure the laptop with a smart-card reader ($10) and fingerprint reader ($20).The ThinkPad L460's 14-inch, 1920 x 1080, matte display offers accurate colors, sharp details and solid viewing angles. When I watched a trailer for Ghostbusters, fine details such as the dirt on a subway wall or the reflections on a hood ornament appeared prominent. The green and blue glow of the ghosts seemed true, though not overly rich. However, many objects, particularly skin tones, seemed to have a slight red bias. Colors stayed true at up to 80 degrees to the left and right, washing out only slightly at a full 90 degrees.

According to our colorimeter, the L460 can reproduce 67 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is a bit below the 14-inch laptop category average (80 percent) but identical to the ThinkPad T460's score. The Dell Latitude E7470 (118 percent) and Toshiba Tecra A40-C (72 percent) both did better. The L460's screen is also quite accurate, achieving a Delta E error rating of just 0.25 (0 is perfect), which is far better than the category average (2.23) and about on par with the scores of the Latitude E7470 (0.5) and ThinkPad T460 (0.5)Registering 233 nits on our light meter, the ThinkPad L460's display is just a little dimmer than the category average (246 nits) but nearly identical to the showing by the T460's panel (239 nits). However, the Latitude E7470 (338 nits) was quite a bit brighter.

With the L460's powerful, bottom-mounted speakers, you'll have no problem giving audio-visual presentations to a giant conference room full of people. When I played AC/DC's "Back in Black" on the laptop, the volume was loud enough to fill the entire first floor of my house. There was a clear separation of sound between instruments on the left and vocals on the right. Though there was some major tinniness at maximum volume, the output was richer and more accurate than on most laptops we test. The bundled Dolby Audio app lets you choose from among presets for different sound-types -- Movie, Music, Game and Voice -- though I found the catchall Dynamic mode sounded best.

Even among Lenovo's business laptops, which have a reputation for providing typing comfort, the ThinkPad L460's keyboard stands out as one of the best. The gently curved chiclet keys offer a very deep 2.1mm of travel (1.5 to 2mm is typical) and a level of tactile feedback that provides just the right amount of resistance, without becoming stiff. Thanks to the keyboard's snappy feel and generous travel, I reached a rate of 107 words per minute with an error rate below 1 percent on the 10FastFingers test. That's one of my best scores ever and far above my typical, 96-wpm and 3 percent mark.

Unfortunately, for those who need helping finding their keys in the dark, the ThinkPad L460's keyboard doesn't have a backlight option.Like most other ThinkPads, the L460 has a red TrackPoint pointing stick between its G and H keys. Navigating the desktop, clicking on icons and highlighting text was extremely accurate with the little red nub, and best of all, I never had to lift my hands off of the home row, so I could work faster. For those who don't like pointing sticks, the L460 also has a 3.9 x 2.2-inch touchpad. The buttonless pad offers mostly accurate navigation around the desktop, but it was occasionally jumpy, and sometimes the pointer stuck and I had to pick up my finger and swipe again. On the bright side, multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom and three-finger swipe worked flawlessly. The ThinkPad L460 makes room for almost every port a business user could want, including a VGA connector for outputting to old-school monitors and projectors. The left side houses a mini DisplayPort, Ethernet, VGA, a Kensington Lock slot and two USB 3.0 ports. The right side contains the 3.5mm audio jack, optional smart-card reader and a third USB 3.0 port. The front lip holds an SD Card reader. Unfortunately, there's no USB Type-C or Thunderbolt 3 port for the next generation of peripherals.

The 720p webcam captured colorful, detailed images of my face in both a dark room and under the fluorescent lights of my office. As with most laptop cameras, the images had some visual noise and splotchiness. With a Core i5-6200U CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, our review configuration of the ThinkPad L460 offered strong performance for multitasking and productivity. Even with more than a dozen tabs open and a 1080p video playing in another window, I was able to switch tasks and work on this review without a hint of lag.Lenovo's laptop scored a solid 6,245 on Geekbench 3, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall performance. That's slightly behind the 14-inch laptop category average (6,475) and the Core i5-6300U-powered Lenovo ThinkPad T460 (6,708), but the Latitude E7470 (6,059) and Toshiba A40-C (5,846), which have the same CPU as the L460, both fared worse.

The L460 took just 4 minutes and 32 seconds to complete our spreadsheet macro test, which involves matching 20,000 names with their addresses in OpenOffice Calc. That time is much faster than the category average (5:52) and about on par with the Latitude E7470 (4:30) and Tecra A40-C (4:30). However, the T460 (4:13) was 19 seconds quicker. The laptop's 256GB SSD copied 4.97GB worth of mixed-media files in just 32 seconds. That's a rate of 157.1 MBps, comfortably ahead of the category average (137.5 MBps), the Latitude E7470 (132.3 MBps) and the hard-drive-powered Tecra A40-C (27.9 MBps). The Thinkpad T460 was a tad faster, though (175.5 MBps).

With integrated Intel HD 520 graphics, the ThinkPad L460 is powerful enough to play videos and do some light media editing, but we wouldn't recommend gaming or doing 3D modeling. Lenovo's laptop scored 62,267 on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, a synthetic test which measures graphics prowess. That's higher than the category average (56,655), the Latitude E7470's score (59,801) and the Tecra A40-C's showing (54,373) but about 5 percent behind the T460's mark (65,981).

The ThinkPad L460 can last a long time on a charge, depending on which of its three removable batteries you choose. With its high-capacity battery, which has six cells and can store 72 watt-hours of juice, the laptop lasted a strong 12 hours and 51 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over Wi-Fi. That's more than 4 hours longer than the category average (8:22) and far ahead of the Latitude E7470's time (9:16) and Tecra A40-C's showing (6:44). However, with a high-capacity battery on board, the ThinkPad T460 lasted for a whopping 17hours and 4 minutes.

Acer TravelMate 5335 Notebook Battery

The Notebook 7 earned a score of 88,956 on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark. Thats not high enough for the most intense games like Metro: Last Light, but you should be fine playing lighter titles like World of Warcraft, and the extra power should be useful for creatives using programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. That score beats the category average of 73,353, and the ThinkPad X1 Yoga (70,475), the Spectre x360 (64,632) and the Inspiron 15 (64,067), all of which use Intel's integrated 520 graphics. If you video chat on Skype with any regularity, youll want to buy an external webcam alongside the Notebook 7. A selfie I took with the 480p camera was grainy and dark. My face was pixelated, my hair looked like an amorphous blob sitting atop my head and our office appeared as if it were cast in shadow.

Keep a charger nearby, because youre going to need it. The Notebook 7 lasted just 5 hours and 53 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuously browsing the web over Wi-Fi. The average for a mainstream notebook is 6:31, a time exceeded by the Inspiron 15 (6:55), the ThinkPad X1 Yoga (7:52) and the Spectre x360 (8:27). The bottom of the Notebook 7 got a little toasty after we streamed 15 minutes of HD video from Hulu. It reached 98 degrees Fahrenheit, which is beyond our comfort threshold of 95 degrees. The touchpad (83.4 degrees) and center of the keyboard (93 degrees) stayed nice and cool. The Notebook 7 has a mix of useful programs and complete junk preinstalled. Among the unwanted bloatware are Candy Crush Soda Saga, Flipboard, TripAdvisor, Netflix, Twitter and Norton Security. Samsung includes a recovery utility for backup management, Simple Sharing for exchanging files with Android devices, and Wi-Fi Transfer, which sends files to other computers wirelessly.

Samsung Notebook 7 SpinSamsung sells the Notebook 7 Spin with a one-year warranty. See how Samsung performed on our Best and Worst Brands ranking and Tech Support Showdown. The Notebook 7 Spin that we reviewed included a 2.5-GHz Intel Core i7-6500U; 16GB of RAM; an Nvidia GeForce 940MX GPU with 2GB of VRAM; a 1TB, 5,400 rpm HDD; and a 128GB SSD. This configuration will set you back $1,199.A configuration with 12GB of RA and no SSD that is otherwise identical will run you $999. If you want a smaller screen, there's a $799 version with a 13-inch, 1080p display, a Core i5-6200U CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD.If you care about your laptop looking as good as it performs, the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin will catch your eye with its minimalist look. In addition, it has enough horsepower for some graphic design and the lightest of gaming. Unfortunately, its shallow keyboard, sloppy webcam and ephemeral battery life make it more difficult to recommend for true productivity users.

If you dont need the graphics performance, the HP Spectre x360 15t (starting at $1,150) is also beautiful but offers several hours more battery life and amazing speakers. The 14-inch ThinkPad X1 Yoga (starting at $1,394) also offers excellent battery life and is far lighter than either the Spectre or the Notebook 7. But the Notebook 7 is a capable device -- some might even call it beautiful -- as long as you can move past the flaws below the surface.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A $19.5 million class action Settlement announced by Cotchett, Pitre McCarthy, LLP, Lieff Cabraser Heimann Bernstein, LLP, and Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP has been agreed to by Sony Corporation, Sony Energy Devices Corporation, and Sony Electronics Inc. ("Settling Defendants") resolving claims that they allegedly fixed the price of Lithium Ion Battery Cells. This may have caused individuals and businesses to pay more for Lithium Ion Batteries and Lithium Ion Battery Products. Lithium Ion Battery Products include, but are not limited to, laptop computers, notebook computers, netbook computers, tablet computers, mobile phones, digital cameras, camcorders, and power tools.

You may be included if, from January 1, 2000, to May 31, 2011, you indirectly purchased a Lithium Ion Battery or Lithium Ion Battery Product (such as a notebook computer, mobile phone, or digital camera) in the United States for your own use and not for resale from one or more of the Defendants in this lawsuit. "Indirectly" means you bought the product from someone other than the manufacturer, such as from a retail store. A more detailed notice, including the exact Class definition and exceptions to Class membership.
The Settlement provides for the payment of $19,500,000 in cash to the Class. Sony has also agreed to cooperate in the pursuit of claims against other defendants.

How can I get a payment?

Money will not be distributed to the Class at this time. The lawyers for the Class will pursue the lawsuit against the other Defendants to see if any future settlements or judgments can be obtained in the case and then be distributed together, on a pro rata basis, based on the value of your Lithium Ion Battery and/or Lithium Ion Battery Product purchases, to reduce expenses. If you want to receive notice about the claims process or future settlements, you should register at www.batteriesconsumerlitigation.com.

What are my rights?

Even if you do nothing, you will be bound by the Court's decisions concerning this Settlement. If you want to keep your right to sue the Settling Defendants regarding Lithium Ion Battery and/or Lithium Ion Battery Product purchases, you must exclude yourself in writing from the Class by September 22, 2016. If you stay in the Class, you may object in writing to the Settlement by September 22, 2016. The Settlement Agreement, along with details on how to exclude yourself or object, is available at www.batteriesconsumerlitigation.com. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California will hold a hearing on November 8, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., at 1301 Clay Street, Courtroom 1, 4th Floor, Oakland, CA 94612 to consider whether to approve the Settlement. Class Counsel will also request at the hearing, or at a later date, attorneys' fees of up to 30% of the Settlement Fund, plus reimbursement of costs and expenses, for investigating the facts, litigating the case, and negotiating the settlement. You or your own lawyer may appear and speak at the hearing at your own expense, but you don't have to. The hearing may be moved to a different date or time without additional notice, so it is a good idea to check the website for additional information. Please do not contact the Court about this case.

If the case against the other Defendants is not dismissed or settled, Class Counsel will have to prove their claims against the other Defendants at trial. Dates for the trial have not yet been set. The Court has appointed the law firms of Cotchett, Pitre McCarthy, LLP; Lieff Cabraser Heimann Bernstein, LLP; and Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP as Class Counsel, to represent Indirect Purchaser Class members.A laptop for a student definitely has a whole different set of requirements than a laptop for a casual user.A student laptop has a bunch of different usage scenarios and has to be the most dynamic too. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while you're buying a laptop for studies.Keep it portable

A student laptop has to be portable and light, as he/she is going to carry this around in different classes and the last thing you want a student to get is exhausted while he enters the classroom.

So, while picking a machine make sure it doesn’t exceed 14-inches of display size. 14-inches is adequate for multitasking as well as media consumption when not studying. Also make sure that the laptop doesn’t exceed 2 kilograms in weight.
Now hardware choice totally depends on the tasks/classes you’re taking. If you're just going to be taking notes on your laptop, and browsing the web, a Core i3 processor paired with 4GB of RAM should do the trick for you. However if you’re getting into 3D content creation or designing, then you might need to look into more beefier specs, such as a Core i5 or an i7 with at least 8GB of RAM. Moreover you’ll also need to look into additional GPU’s with al least 2GB of video memory to keep things smooth.

One thing to make sure is that always pick the latest hardware, as you want it to perform best for years to come and not get outdated too soon.
This is yet another integral part of any laptop, the OS. You can pick between Windows 10 and Mac OS.If you’re planning to work on word processors or presentations, or simply browsing the web, a Windows 10 machine makes a lot more sense, as they’re not only versatile, but also productive with a plethora of apps to choose from. Also they’d be lot cheaper than a Mac OS machine.Mac OS machine is recommended for students getting into arts, video/photo editing etc. Not only Mac machines pack the punch to handle power hungry apps, but it is also very well optimised for such tasks.

samsung notebook 7 spin 740u5le 001 front silverSamsung

Earlier this year, the company released the Galaxy Tab Pro S, a tablet hybrid device built to compete with the iPad Pro and Surface Pro 4, as well as the Notebook 9 Ultrabook aimed at executives and road warriors. Joining the Samsung family are two versions of the Notebook 7 Spin -- a device that combines the traditional structure of a notebook, with a flexible display for tent-mode or tablet-mode.The Notebook 7 Spin comes in 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch models, each aimed at a different type of business user. The 13.3-inch model features an Intel 6th Generation Core i5 processor and fast-charging technology and is designed for what Samsung describes as an office knowledge worker. The 15.6-inch model features an Intel 6th Generation Core i7 processor, nVidia 940MX 2GB graphics, fast-charging and a hybrid drive and it's aimed at office power users. Both devices feature Samsung's quick charge, boasting two hours of battery life off a 20-minute charge and a full charge in under 100 minutes on a completely dead device.

Samsung points to IDC number that predict a steady decline in traditional notebook sales and a year-over-year increase in convertible sales between now and 2018. Jen Langan, director of Mobility Product Marketing, says that Samsung has seen an increase in the consumerization of IT as more business users turn to convertible options over traditional business notebooks.samsung notebook 7 spin 740u5le 015 dynamic silverSamsung

Langan says enterprise users are looking for something that combines the traditional clamshell notebook with the flexibility and collaboration options that come from a flexible touch-screen display. While the Tab Pro S was aimed at what Langan calls ultra-mobile users, the 7 Spin series is for employees who want more flexibility, but still typically work from home or the office more days than not.

The entry-level 13.3-inch device boasts a Full HD PLS touch display, the option of either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, Intel HD graphics, a backlit keyboard, an estimated 11-hour battery life, as well as HDMI, USB-C, USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and MicroSD ports. The device measures just .78-inches thick and weighs in at just under 4 pounds.
If you need a little more power in their device, the 15.6-inch model features a Full HD PLS touch display, 4GB or 8GB of RAM, a hybrid drive with a 128GB SSD and a 1TB HDD, a battery life of around nine hours, as well as HDMI, USB-C, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, Gbit Lan and 3-in-1 card reader ports. The device is the same width as the 13-inch model at .78-inches, but it weighs a bit more at five pounds. The hybrid drive gives power users -- especially those who may have large documents, data sets or creative files to store -- the speed and efficiency of an SSD for apps and programs, with the added reliability of a HDD for storage.

Samsung also included business ready features in both devices -- including extended service contracts, dedicated business support and a buyback program. The buyback program will allow IT departments to send in any old devices -- they don't have to be Samsung -- to a third-party vendor that will assess the value. That money can then be put towards the purchase of Samsung enterprise convertible devices, like the Notebook 7 Spin. There will also be a dedicated service queue for businesses, so they won't be stuck on hold waiting among consumers when it's time for service. Both devices will be available July 18, with the 13.3-inch model starting at $899 and the 15.6-inch model starting at $1,299.

At first glance, the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is the most beautiful convertible 2-in-1 on the market. When you really take a good look (and go hands-on), that facade starts to crack. The $1,199 ($999 to start) laptop's shallow keyboard, poor-quality webcam and lackluster battery take away from that initial glow. But if you care about style, the Notebook 7 Spin has it in spades, and the performance from its Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card may be enough for you to overlook its shortcomings

The Notebook 7 Spin is the most beautiful 2-in-1 Ive laid my eyes on to date. The silver aluminum chassis is built solidly and the rounded edges are inviting and attractive. Opening the reflective plastic lid reveals the 15.6-inch, 1080p touch screen and a full island-style keyboard with number pad. Unlike the smaller Samsung Notebook 9 Spin, which has two hinges, the Notebook 7 flips around a single hinge with the computers name on it. The whole package looks quite a bit like a MacBook but Apple doesnt make a 2-in-1.Samsung Notebook 7 SpinAt 5 pounds and 14 x 10.1 x 0.8 inches, the Notebook 7 is heavier than the rest of the field, but a little smaller than most of its competitors. Lenovos business 2-in-1, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, is both thinner and lighter (2.8 pounds, 13.1 x 9 x 0.7 inches). But among consumer models, the HP Spectre x360 15t (4.2 pounds, 14.8 x 9.8 x 0.6 inches) and Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (4.6 pounds, 14.9 x 9.9 x 0.7 inches) have larger footprints.

The 360-hinge allows for the Notebook 7 to be placed into four different modes: a laptop, a tablet (by folding the screen all the way around), a tent (placed as an upside down V) and a stand (by placing the keyboard facedown and the monitor standing straight up). The sides of the Notebook 7 Spin feature all of the ports you need for work and play. The left is home to the power jack, an Ethernet jack, HDMI output, USB 3.0 and Type-C ports and audio output. The right is where youll find two USB 2.0 ports, an SD card slot and space for a security lock. The display on the Notebook 7 Spins 15.6-inch, 1080p display is extremely sharp but not as vivid as its competitors. When I watched the trailer for Assassins Creed, it was easy to see specks of fire during an attack and grime on the assassins faces. Some charging soldiers red, flowing capes appeared far too dark, and the screen had a bit of a blue tint overall.

Samsung Notebook 7 SpinThe screen covers 72.2 percent of the color gamut, less than the mainstream notebook average of 88 percent. The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 was worse at 62 percent, but the ThinkPad X1 Yoga (102 percent) and the Spectre x360 (119 percent) were far more vivid. In our color-accuracy testing, the Notebook 7's screen had a Delta-E score of 1.8 (zero is best), far below the average of 4.2. The Spectre x360 (4.1) was just below the average, but the ThinkPad X1 Yoga (1.0) and the Inspiron 15 (0.9) were both more precise. The Notebook 7 Spins display has an average brightness of 260 nits, which also happens to be the mainstream average. The Spectre x360 (246 nits) and the Inspiron 15 (244 nits) were dimmer, but the ThinkPad X1 Yoga (279 nits) was a bit more luminous.

The keyboard on the Notebook 7 is too shallow for my liking with just 1.36 millimeters of travel, and the 56 grams of force required to press the keys down made me bottom out frequently. When I took the 10fastfingers.com typing test, I reached 105 words per minute, which is about average for me, with my standard 2 percent error rate. I didnt get to those speeds easily; it hurt when I was done typing.Samsung Notebook 7 SpinThe 4.2 x 3-inch touchpad is nice and responsive. The smooth glass felt comfortable under my fingers and I had no problem navigating, scrolling, zooming or performing any of Windows 10s gestures. The speakers on the Notebook 7 dont get as loud as I'd like. When I listened to the Eagles Hotel California, the speakers just filled our medium-size conference room. The drums and cymbals came through the speakers clearly, as did the songs iconic guitar and bass. The vocals, however, were shallow and didnt stand out on the track.

The Notebook 7 we reviewed came with a 2.5-GHz Intel Core i7-6500U, 16GB of RAM, an Nvidia GeForce 940MX GPU with 2GB of VRAM, a 1TB, 5,400 rpm HDD and a 128GB SSD. That was more than enough for heavy multitasking; I had 15 tabs open in Google Chrome, one of which was streaming 1080p video from YouTube, with no lag at all.On the Geekbench synthetic benchmark, which measures overall performance, the Notebook 7 notched a score of 7,132, just under the mainstream laptop average of 7,521. Still, it outperformed its competition, including the ThinkPad X1 Yoga (7,064), the Inspiron 15 (6,499) and the Spectre x360 (6,376).Samsung Notebook 7 SpinThe Notebook 7 copied 4.97GB of mixed-media files, including photos, music and videos, in 1 minute and 5 seconds, a speed of 77.5 megabytes per second, which is sluggish compared with the mainstream average of 181.1MBps, as well as the Inspiron 15 (122.6MBps), the Spectre x360 (149.7MBps) and the ThinkPad X1 Yoga (a blazing 186.2MBps).On our spreadsheet macro test, the Notebook 7 matched 20,000 names and addresses in 1 minute a 5 seconds. While thats quicker than the 1:29 category average, the Spectre x360 (0:34), the ThinkPad X1 Yoga (0:35) and the Inspiron 15 (0:41) were far faster.

Toshiba PA3356U-2BRS Notebook Battery

How is this better than streaming apps like HP Workspace? Users would not need to pay for a server in the cloud to run their apps, they could load any app they want without arranging it with anyone else, and they could install new default apps such as Opera, Chrome and more which changes and improves how the device works, something not possible with streaming apps.

It wouldn’t be wrong to consider Apple MacBook 2016 as the new breed of laptops with Apple persisting with an ultra-slim chassis, readily backed up by the 6th Gen Core M chipset. Apart from these sizeable inclusions, Apple MacBook 2016 brings in a faster flash drive followed by a more powerful battery module. While we still get that one USB Type-C port, there is a lot more to cherish rather than complaining over the same.

The beautiful chassis from the past year has been retained, measuring a mere 0.5-Inches. The body is made up of aluminum with Apple adding a hint of rose-gold into the scheme of things. Apart from this, we also get silver, space gray and golden colored variants. This 2-pound gadget is certainly something special and scores a perfect ten, in terms of aesthetics. The solitary USB Type-C port is actually a pretty big problem which Apple MacBook 2016 air has been camouflaging for long. While we just get to pair any one of the accessories in power cable or external display, for more connections we can look for the USB-C ‘Digital Multiport Adapter’ which comes with three outlets— namely HDMI port, USB 3.0 port and the power port.

While the USB-C ecosystem is growing popular with each passing day, it would be good if Apple grows an extra port, allowing us to connect more than one monitor— similar to the likes of MacBook Pro.Apple has persisted with the flat keyboard which miraculously doesn’t flex a lot. The butterfly mechanism is something new and offers minimal travel of 0.5mm but the typing experience isn’t that bad. It takes time to get accustomed to but you do grow a liking towards the same— even though it isn’t that comfortable. The Force Click support on touchpad offers haptic feedback and is still magical. The 4.4-2.7-Inch real-estate is great to work with and offers a perfect experience. The 12-Inch display is gorgeous to say the least, owing to the display resolution of 2304×1440 pixels. The colors are bright and vivid with ample amounts of sharpness to account for. In terms of brightness levels, Apple MacBook 2016 registered 327-nits which is pretty good even if it isn’t near 548-nits offered by Vaio Z.

The Core m5 Processor, coupled with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD offer a powerful performance upgrade as compared to the predecessor. We also get a base variant with 1.1GHz Core m3 processor and 256GB of SSD but both are equally potent when it comes to handling daily tasks. The PCIe flash storage translates into faster read and write speeds with m5 and m3 versions differing slightlyThe Intel HD 515 GPU is capable enough for handling minor Mac games like Rayman origins and basic photo editing. While most mid-range games returned less than 30 frames per second on this ultraportable notebook, the action was relatively smoother than expected. For the thin profile, Apple MacBook 2016 offers a booming acoustic experience.

The 480p webcam is a bummer and shouldn’t have been allowed to appear on this pricey gadget. The grains are visible and the quality is questionable.Apple actually lived up to its promise of 10 hours of battery life and we could actually churn out 9 hours and 40 minutes with ease. This was calculated while surfing the internet at 40 percent brightness. This battery module supersedes the predecessor by an hour. The Apple MacBook 2016 is certainly an improved version as compared to the predecessor but it still doesn’t come cheap courtesy the famed branding on the lid. However, it offers blazing processing speeds for the m5 model and an exceedingly vibrant screen. Moreover, the chassis looks brilliant with functional keyboard and extraordinary touchpad leading the way. So if you are willing to make a few compromises in terms of ports, webcam and gaming— Apple MacBook 2016 is the gadget that qualifies.

Hoverboards aren't the other battery-operated devices causing trouble for users.A local man said the lithium ion battery caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage.Eric Young came home from work and found smoke in his living room one day. He said he was in shock before he remembered he had a fire extinguisher. Young said he used it to put out the flames. He said it has cost him $20,000 to repair so far, and he is still unable to move back home.Young said a lithium ion battery is to blame. The government recalled half a million hoverboards for lithium ion battery issues earlier this year.Young said the battery was only in his home for 24 hours.Young said he had bought the battery for his son's remote controlled car.

The manufacturing company, Traxxas, said it stands by the safety of its products. They said a lithium ion battery usually catches fire because customers fail to follow manufacturer's instructions. The risk is not a new phenomenon. In 2006, Dell recalled millions of laptop batteries because of fires, and Boeing had to ground the 787 Dreamliner until it could find a way to keep their lithium ion batteries from overheating.FOX23 checked the Consumer Product Safety Commission website and only found one recall linked to Traxxas, and it was not linked to lithium ion batteries. The company had recalled nearly 4,000 monster trucks in June because of a fire hazard with speed controls.

The government, however, has recalled lithium ion batteries nearly 250 times for fire or burn hazards.Lithium ion batteries are found in many products because they are smaller, powerful and long-lasting. Researchers are working to find a way to make them less likely to catch fire. Lenovo's 14-inch ThinkPad T460 is our favorite business laptop overall, because of its epic battery life, tough chassis, solid performance and snappy keyboard. But for those who want a productivity-centric system with a larger screen, the 15.6-inch ThinkPad T560 offers a similarly excellent combination of usability, durability and security. Starting at a reasonable $809 ($1,286.10 as tested), the T560 one-ups its smaller sibling with a numeric keypad for number crunchers, an optional 3K display and over 21 hours of battery life -- the longest of any laptop we've tested.

The ThinkPad T560 has the same classic, raven-black ThinkPad aesthetic as most of Lenovo's other business laptops. It has only a few dashes of color, provided by its bright-red status light and TrackPoint nub, so it won't wow the hipsters at the coffee shop. However, if you're buying the T560, you're probably more interested in durability and usability than style. At 4.8 pounds and 14.98 x 10.16 x 0.88 inches, the ThinkPad T560 isn't particularly thin or light. It was a tight fit in my laptop backpack and felt quite large on my lap. The T560's six-cell battery, which we highly recommend because it more than doubles the machine's endurance, adds a noticeable 0.4 pounds to the weight and tilts up the laptop slightly. The 14-inch ThinkPad T460 (3.8 pounds, or 4.2 pounds with the six-cell battery) is exactly a pound lighter.

However, the T560 is lighter and/or slimmer than other 15-inch business laptops in its price range, including the Dell Latitude E5570 (5.6 pounds, 0.9 inches thick) and the Toshiba Tecra A50 (4.8 pounds, 0.95 inches thick). Dell's XPS 15 consumer-targeted laptop is a bit thinner and lighter, at 4.4 pounds and 0.66 inches thick. Made from PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) plastic on the lid and deck, and a glass-fiber-reinforced plastic bottom, the ThinkPad T560 is designed to take some punishment. According to Lenovo, the laptop has passed MIL-SPEC durability benchmarks for extreme temperatures, shocks, dust and vibration. The company also says that all of its ThinkPads are made to pass a series of internal bump, drop and lid open/close tests.

The ThinkPad T560 has the security and manageability features that many enterprise IT departments require. Built-in Trusted Platform Module (TPM) encryption helps keep your hard drive or BIOS-level password secure. Intel vPro, available if you choose the Core i5-6300U CPU and above, allows IT managers to log in remotely and wipe the hard drive, flash the BIOS or install software. An optional fingerprint reader ($20) works with Windows Hello. The ThinkPad T560's spill-resistant keyboard has well-spaced, gently curved keys that provide a deep 2.41 millimeters of travel (1.5 to 2 mm is typical) for comfortable typing. Number crunchers and spreadsheet mavens, in particular, will appreciate the keyboard's dedicated numeric keypad, which has shortcut keys above it for the calculator app, web browser, file explorer and screen lock. The keyboard's backlight, a $40 option, was more than luminous enough in both its low and high brightness modes.

Toshiba PA3615U-1BRM Notebook Battery

Dongxu hasn’t yet released any information about when the battery might be fit for installation in consumer electronics, but engineers have been excited about the prospect of graphene batteries for some time.
Graphene is a lattice network of carbon atoms, which is more conductive than silicon and stronger than steel. It is extremely lightweight, highly flexible and considered to be eco-friendly.Its application in consumer electronics goes beyond batteries. The material could be used for everything from flexible screens to wearable devices, as well as more sensitive heart rate and fingerprint sensors.Samsung announced a major breakthrough in the production of graphene in 2014. In collaboration with Sungkyunkwan University, the tech giant uncovered a new method of growing large area, single crystal wafer scale graphene. It’s the first step in creating large graphene crystals while ensuring the material’s conductive properties are maintained.

Last year, British tech startup Intelligent Energy produced a hyrdrogen-powered battery that could charge an iPhone for a week. The company was believed to be working closely with Apple, the Telegraph reported.Make no mistake about it. The 2016 Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition laptop is wonderful. It's fast, its display is gorgeous, and, at less than three pounds, you can carry and code with it anywhere. But, oh, that price tag! This is a really, sweet design. The display bezel is only a quarter of an inch thick. This is as close to a real edge-to-edge display than I've ever seen. The 13.3 inch display itself is also sweet. It's a 3,200×1,800 touchscreen. For those playing along at home that's 280 pixels per inch. That's 40 more than my prized 2015 Chromebook Pixel and 60 more than a MacBook Pro with Retina.

The display is powered by Intel's Iris 540 GPU. It looks, in a word, great. At 13.3 inches, the screen is a bit small for my taste, but I'm not complaining. There's one oddity here. To maximize the screen real-estate while leaving as little bezel as possible, the 720p Webcam ended up in the bottom-left corner of the display. It matters less in practice than I thought it would, but it's still a little odd.The system itself is powered by a dual-core, 2.2GHz 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6560U Skylake processor. This is one fast system. It's meant for developers and they need all the speed they can get.It boasts 16GBs of DDR3 RAM and a half a terabyte, PCIe solid state drive (SSD). This also helps make it a fast system.

How fast? Using the installed Ubuntu Linux 14.04.3 with its developer tools I was able to compile its Linux 3.19 kernel in about three minutes. If I'd optimized my tools I think I could have dropped that to less than two minutes.Of course, you can compile Linux faster. To really compile in a hurry try an Intel Xeon E5 chip. But on a laptop? I don't think you're going to do much better. The XPS 13 offers just two USB 3.0 ports; a Thunderbolt 3/USB 3.1 Type-C port; and a DisplayPort 1.2 video output port. It also comes with an SD card reader and an audio jack. I'm not sure what the Thunderbolt port is doing there -- does anyone use Thunderbolt now? -- but the USB 3.1 side of the chipset will get used.

There are no HDMI or Ethernet ports. On the other hand, with the built-in Intel 8260 Wi-Fi chipset maybe you don't need the Ethernet port anyway. The built-in Wi-Fi supports both 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1.
The Wi-Fi is much better in this model than it was in earlier versions of the Dell XPS 13. These models, with their Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets, often proved troublesome. The keyboard is a pleasure to use. I'm not crazy about the touchpad, but then I've never met one I really liked. Give me a ThinkPad TrackPoint any day.Dell claims the XPS 13, with its 56wHR, 4-Cell Battery, has about a 12-hour battery life. Guess what? It does. I was impressed too.The hardware is only part of the story here. Besides using Ubuntu 14.04 as its default operating system, this system is designed for developers. If you just need a system to roam the web or to do day in and day out office work, look elsewhere. This is a laptop by programmers for programmers.

Dell will be offering the XPS 13 with the latest long-term support version of Ubuntu 16.04 later this year. In the meantime, you can also update the existing model to Ubuntu 16.04 or any other desktop Linux distribution that strikes your fancy such as Mint 18.The price reflects this high end goal. An ordinary XPS 13 with a Core i3 processor and Windows 10 Home starts at $799. The entry-level XPS 13 Developer Edition, with 8GBs of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and an Intel HD Graphics 520 chipset costs $1099. The next model up features Intel Iris Graphics 540 and costs $1649.99. Finally, the top-of-the-line, which is what I reviewed, comes with 16GBs of RAM and a 512GB SSD and will cost you $2,079.The Windows 10 Mobile market is pretty small, and possible 1-2 million units per quarter. That’s not just a small segment of the phone market (less than 1%) but also a small fraction of the PC market (less than 2%).Yet Windows 10 Mobile is much closer to the PC market than the phone market, sharing a common platform, services and with Continuum even user interface. In fact many are calling Windows 10 Mobile phones just another PC form factor, with devices like the HP Elite X3 being the best example, morphing via accessories from a phone to a laptop to a desktop.

However there is still a hard separation between Windows and Windows 10 Mobile, that being the ability to run legacy x86 apps which is still the main reason Windows has not been replaced by Android or iOS devices. Windows 10 Mobile does not benefit from any such protection. At the same time Windows PCs suffer from not having a real presence in phones, leading to falling shipments year on year. The solution is to break down the barriers which separate the two operating systems and really make Windows 10 phones just another place to run Windows, similar to how Windows 10 tablets now run full Windows, vs the failed Windows RT operating system. With the low-end Windows 10 market more or less decimated, and volume in general really small, and Microsoft targeting the enterprise market in general in any case, the reasons which held back the move are not really relevant any more.

Higher price is no longer a major factor, as Microsoft is targeting the more cost-tolerant enterprise market. Battery life is also much less of an issue, due to the ability to include chunky batteries in these larger, more expensive devices, such as the more than 4000 mAh battery in the HP Elite X3. We expect to charge our laptops every 6-8 hours in any case, with the handset possibly jumping from dock to dock as users move around. Software optimised for the phone form factor will obviously come via UWP apps.Of course issues remain, such as poorly developed LTE modems for x86 and low power chipsets also being underpowered compared to their equivalent ARM versions. These are issues a bold company may address by designing their own processor, much like Apple and Samsung has done.

The advantage would be massive – the messaging would be crystal clear around Windows phone – you buy one to use as your only device, which can serve all your needs, from phone to desktop PC and all form factors in between. Some apps may work better on a big than a small screen, but all apps are accessible no matter where you are, be they Photoshop or a UWP version of Skype. Microsoft would only work on one version of the OS, not one and a half. Sales may even grow from 1 million to 3 million, boosting the PC market, and if a user really wanted Pokemon Go they could run Bluestacks.

In summary, with Windows 10 Mobile sales now so low that Microsoft is not even giving any sales numbers any more, its time for Microsoft to exit the smartphone market and to reboot the OS by making it simply another Windows 10 form factor. At this point Microsoft simply nothing to lose and quite a lot to gain.Would our readers be prepared to pay $600 for their next Windows Phone if it ran on a Core M processor and let you replace your current laptop? I know I would.

Why would this be better than seperate devices? For most it will not be, but for a small segment of the PC market it would be ideal. That small segment is likely larger than the currently tiny ARM windows 10 mobile market.

The Windows 10 desktop UI would not make sense on Mobile: Windows 10 desktop already includes a tablet mode which hides the desktop and which could be further improved for smaller screens.

Which processor is powerful enough for a laptop but low power enough for a smartphone? Intel’s Core M3 2016 processor only sips 4.5 watt (only about 50% more than a Snapdragon 810) and is powerful enough for Apple’s Macbook.

This would kill the motivation for UWP apps. Selling less than 10 million Windows 10 Mobile smartphones already does this job very well.

Toshiba Qosmio F60 Notebook Battery

Acer loves software, so much so that it installed a slew of apps and programs on the F15 that range from useful to flat-out bloatware. Acer-branded titles include cloud-based apps like abFiles and abPhoto, which let you access important files or photos on any device. Care Center allows you to run system diagnostics, while Power Button provides quick access to shutting the system down or putting it into Hibernate Mode.Extraneous apps include Flipboard, Amazon Kindle, Netflix, Candy Crush Soda Saga, Amazon, Twitter and a Wild Tangent Games Hub app.The Acer Aspire F15 ships with a one-year limited warranty. See how Acer fared on our Tech Support Showdown and Best and Worst Brands ratings.

The $599 model of the F15 I reviewed has a 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-6200U processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and an Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU. If you're looking to save a few bucks, you can get the $499 base model, which downgrades the display from full HD to 1366 x 768. But if you want to get a bit of gaming in, you can pay $799, which gives you a discrete Nvidia GeForce 940MX GPU with 4GB of VRAM and increases the clock speed from 2.3 to 2.5-GHz.Acer managed to cram a lot of value into the Aspire F15. For $599, you get mainstream Core i5 processing power, an attractive design and a sharp, though dull, display. The true star of the system, however, is the SSD that delivers stronger boot and file transfer times than you usually find in this price range. If you want a laptop with a little more performance oomph and a better display, we recommend the Dell Inspiron 15 5000. But if you're looking for a solid all-around laptop, the Acer Aspire F15 is a strong choice.

If you have a Surface Pro 3 and your battery life has been failing to live up to expectations, you are not alone. Based on a thread in the Microsoft Answer forums and a few tips from readers, those who have devices with the Simplo batteries in them are quickly finding themselves with devices that barely hold a charge. The problem is that starting after one year of the device being used, consumers are reporting that their battery life is a small fraction of what it was when they purchased the device. While battery degradation is expected of these devices as all batteries lose their ability to hold a charge over time, what is happening with the Simplo batteries is far outside the normal wear and tear of these devices.

Several users in the Answer forums have posted the battery report from their device and it clearly shows how these batteries have collapsed in terms of functionality. The problem is quite obvious but it’s when it finally shows up is the problem; this flaw does not show up until the device is outside the standard warranty period which leaves the user on the hook for a repair which will cost upwards of $500.Microsoft has acknowledged that they are looking into the issue, which is a good sign for those who have been impacted by the problem but with no timeline for resolution, it leaves those with the issue stranded. The question becomes should you wait to see if Microsoft is going to act upon the issue or do you need to replace the device now and not waste time sitting idle while a potential solution is researched.

To see what battery you have in your Surface Pro 3, you can run the following command from command prompt: powercfg /batteryreport.Those in the forums who have the issue stated that they were told it is a hardware failure and that a software fix will not resolve their problem which means your only hope at this point is that Microsoft will extend the warranty on these devices. If the company does not, and they likely have no legal requirement to do so as this is not a safety issue, then you are out of luck. But, if the company wants to keep its good faith with consumers, and they find that the Simplo battery is flawed and fails consistently outside of the warranty period, it would be in their best interest to offer those impacted a reasonable solution.

For those who are affected, your best bet is to let Microsoft know you are seeing this hardware failure so that they can better understand the scope of the problem. You can do this by contacting support directly and I’d also recommend posting in the Answer forum as well.Dell’s XPS 15 has become the new trendsetter for big-screen laptops. Like Apple, Dell has come up with a stable, high-quality design.I try out a lot of laptops and laptop-tablet hybrids, so it’s never easy to settle on one machine for long. But Dell’s 2016 update of the XPS 15 has been my main machine for the last month. Here’s why.Big screen: Dell’s 15.6-inch display is so big that you probably won’t want anything bigger. But the company has done a good job making its biggest XPS laptop small and light for its size. The XPS 15’s almost-borderless display allows Dell to compress the chassis to the size of some 14-inch laptops. And the 3.9-pound starting weight (4.4 pounds with the larger battery) is well distributed, making it eminently portable for a 15-inch class laptop.

Dell is one of the few top-tier laptop manufacturers to use a so-called bezel-less (borderless) display (though others are finally beginning to catch on). This accomplishes two critical things: it makes for a really cool looking laptop and, as I said above, it keeps the weight and size down. Dell has also done this with great success on the XPS 13, which is essentially a smaller version of the XPS 15.But getting back to the display’s size. What a 15.6-inch screen gets you is something pretty close to a standalone desktop display. It’s easy to unplug my external 25-inch Dell display and just use the XPS’s. In fact, if I owned an XPS 15 there would be really no reason for an external display. That’s why a big-screen laptop will always have a following: it’s essentially a movable desktop PC.

And be warned, once you start using a big-screen laptop, it’s really hard to go back to anything under 14 inches. Dell makes it even harder if you opt for the 4K Ultra HD (3,840-by-2,160) touch display – it has 3 million more pixels than the display on Apple’s 15.4-inch MacBook Pro. Made by Japan-based Sharp and co-developed with Dell, it’s easily the best big display I’ve used on a laptop. Windows 10 in high resolution is very different than Windows running on a lower-resolution laptop. And Dell and Sharp have done their homework with color accuracy and color reproduction.

Materials: Dell’s choice of materials sets it apart from the competition too. In order to keep the weight down, Dell uses a carbon fiber composite on the area surrounding the keyboard and touchpad. The soft feel of the weaved carbon fiber while you type is a nice contrast with the all-aluminum laptops prevalent today – the MacBook being the most prominent example. The only downside is that the carbon fiber can be a body oil magnet. (I find I generally need to clean the area around the touchpad every other day with a soft cloth moistened with soapy water.) The rest of the laptop (top and bottom) is aluminum. Overall, it’s a remarkably sturdy machine considering its light weight and thickness – only 0.66 inches at its thickest point.

Performance: The model I have packs a lot of punch with Intel’s newest i7-6700HQ 6th generation quad-core processor. It also has a no-holds-barred feature set, including 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a fast 512GB solid-state drive, an Nvidia GTX 960M graphics chip, and an 84 WHr (watt-hour) battery.Big-screen laptops are often fast, because they can accommodate robust cooling systems and fans to keep even the speediest silicon from overheating. Fast silicon does make a difference. There really isn’t anything that can slow down the XPS 15 that I’m using. Opening a browser with dozens of tabs, or playing a 1080p video full-screen while tweaking an Excel spreadsheet, or diving into photo or video editing doesn’t faze it. And while I don’t play games, it can also keep up with some of the faster gaming laptops, based on tech site reviews. All of that speed can make it painful to return to less performance-oriented laptops.

Battery life: My computer has the extra-large battery so the XPS 15 can stay charged all day based on my on-and-off usage, as long as you turn down the display brightness to about 60 percent and don’t spend a lot of time watching movies or playing 1080p games. Battery life will jump appreciably if you opt for the cheaper version of the XPS 15 with a less-power-hungry, standard-resolution display.Ports/connectors: The XPS 15 comes with an SD card slot, two USB 3.0 connectors, an HDMI port, and a USB-C/ThunderBolt 3 port.Price: Pricing starts at $999 for a model with a standard-resolution (1,920-by-1,080) display and dual-core processor and jumps quickly into the $1,600 to $2,950 range if you opt for the high-resolution display and quad-core processor.

Living in a high-tech hub such as Champaign-Urbana accrues many benefits. One of those is highly knowledgeable readers. We recently wrote about just a few major companies manufacturing the majority of lithium batteries. A reader, who makes his living involving batteries, responded:I have personally visited at least 15 factories in Asia (small and large) producing lithium polymer batteries. From my 25 years of experience doing business in China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea I'd venture to say that there are hundreds of factories producing lipo batteries like the one being discussed. Quality varies widely. My advice would be to look at consumer reviews of the manufacturer's and/or seller's batteries. Even so, buying an off-brand battery is a gamble. I've witnessed batteries in production for big name brands even at some small to medium sized factories, particularly for special applications.

Otherwise I agree with all that you mentioned.I don't offer investment advice, but lithium batteries (and the basic elements of lithium and aluminum) should be a profitable investment these days. The ultra-hot electric car company, Tesla searches the world to procure and secure the elements to make lithium polymer batteries at its Gigafactory in Nevada. This is truer now than a year ago after Tesla took far more orders for its forthcoming Model 3 than anticipated. The company needs batteries to power at least 325,000 cars during the first year of production. With Tesla vacuuming up all the necessary raw materials for lithium batteries it could cause smartphone, tablet and laptop battery costs to rise. Fortunately, those applications employ very small batteries compared with those to power automobiles.

Toshiba Satellite P300 Notebook Battery

Navigating the sub-$1,000 mainstream laptop market is an exercise in compromise. Case in point: the Acer Aspire F15. For $599, you get a 15.6-inch laptop that offers good overall performance, a fast SSD and more than 6 hours of battery life, all in an attractive chassis. However, there are a couple of caveats in the form of a lackluster display and a spongy keyboard. But if you consider those minor quibbles, the F15 might just be the notebook you're looking for.Thank you, Acer, for not phoning this one in. You could have just put out a slipshod notebook clad in ugly plastic. Instead, you had the foresight to adorn the lid in silvery metal with a visible and tactile crosshatch that plays up the raised diamond-cut Acer logo. I'm even a fan of the slim gray plastic border that culminates in a slim strip that forms the lip. The overall presentation is jaunty, indeed.

Opening the lid rewards you with an aluminum keyboard deck, which is lightly brushed for visual effect. A slim black plastic border surrounds the deck and gives way to a gray plastic undercarriage. The F15 is dotted with a selection of ports, slots and drives, with technologies old and new. You'll find a USB 2.0 port and a DVD writer located on the notebook's right side with the power port. On the left, there's two USB 3.0 ports, a USB Type-C port, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet and VGA. Hiding along the left front lip is a SD card reader.Measuring 15 x 10.2 x 0.9~1.1 inches, the 5.1-pound F15 is thicker than competing notebooks, such as the Lenovo IdeaPad 300S (3.6 pounds, 13.4 x 9.5 x 0.77 inches), the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5.4 pounds, 14.9 x 10.3 x 0.9 inches) and the HP Notebook 15 (4.8 pounds, 15.1 x 10 x 0.96 inches).

You cant have everything in a $600 notebook, and the 15-inch display on the F15 is one area where its budget price shows. When I watched the 1080p trailer of The Magnificent Seven, Denzel Washington's usually glowing mahogany skin looked dull and listless on the 1920 x 1080 matte screen. Although I could clearly see the creases and stitches in the actor's black shirt, its faded appearance made it look as if it had seen one too many trips in the washing machine. The F15 can reproduce only 62 percent of the sRGB gamut, which is below the 88 percent mainstream average, but enough to skate past the Inspiron 15's 59 percent. The HP Notebook 15 (63 percent) and the IdeaPad 300S (67 percent) werent much better.

Color accuracy, too, was off. The panel got an abysmal 4.6 Delta-E error rating (lower is better), which to be fair isn't too far off the 4.2 average, but well short of our 0 ideal. The IdeaPad 300S, the Inspiron 15 and the HP Notebook 15 notched 4.4, 3.8 and 3.3, respectively.Averaging 201 nits on our brightness test, the F15 fell below the 259 nit brightness typical for a mainstream notebook. The other laptops did only marginally better, with the Inspiron 15 measuring 239 nits, while the IdeaPad 300S and the HP Notebook 15 produced 225 and 220 nits.Despite their diminutive size, the pair of speakers mounted on the F15's undercarriage can pump out loud, clear audio. Fantasia's powerful vocals in "Free Yourself" filled the room, but I noticed that the accompanying harp and piano sounded tinnier than usual. When I switched over to Janelle Monae's "Yoga," the bass was pretty nonexistent.

The F15's backlit island-style keyboard delivers a mediocre, but tolerable, typing experience. I found that the 1.6 millimeters of key travel and 52 grams of force needed to depress the keys made for less responsive keystrokes. The spongy feel forced me to strike the keys harder than I'd like, which affected my score on the 10fastfingers typing test, dropping my average 60 words per minute down to 51 wpm. However, I definitely appreciated the massive 4.1 x 3.0-inch touchpad. No matter which multitouch gestures I performed (two-finger scroll, three-finger tap or four-finger tap), my fingers were rarely in danger of hitting the edge. Overall, the touchpad was fast and responsive and the bottom corners delivered clickier feedback than the keyboard.

Equipped with a 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-6200U processor, a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, the F15 is an able workhorse. It's not the strongest in the stable, but it'll get the job done. The laptop seamlessly streamed an episode of Voltron from Netflix with seven Google Chrome tabs running in the background and a full system scan running. On Geekbench 3, a synthetic overall performance test, the F15 scored 6,044, which is below the 7,521 mainstream average. However, that's on a par with the Inspiron 15 (6,331), the HP Notebook 15 (5,784) and the IdeaPad 300S (5,753), all of which have 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-6200U CPUs.

Honda moved production of its Accord Hybrid back to Japan because it claimed lithium batteries were more readily available there than in the U.S. Honda builds all other Accords in Ohio.Although I've written this scores of times: Do not overcharge your batteries. Never leave the charger plugged in once it charges the battery. This column repeatedly urges readers to recycle electronics and related material. Thus this email: "Do you know of anywhere, preferably local, where we can recycle old VHS and audio tapes?" Other than using tapes for crafts projects, an awkward form of recycling, no local business advertises recycling of tape. VHS, Beta and to a lesser extent audio cassettes present a recycling nightmare. In addition to the tape itself, the plastic housing and the mixed plastics and metals inside the cassette require separate recycling.

Magnetic tape itself presents a daunting challenge. I toured most of the world's magnetic tape factories in the U.S., Europe, and Japan where they cooked a very toxic brew that creates the magnetic coating. Chromium dioxide could be explosive in substantial quantities under certain conditions. If you can find people who continue using VHS or audio tape, that's one way to recycle. While a resurgence of analog recording for LPs demands audio tape, recording studios insist on virgin tape.I searched the Internet and the few recycling outlets seem to have gone out of business. So it looks like massive amounts of tape will end up in landfills to the detriment of the environment and future generations.

A few columns ago we mentioned possible complications with the new OLED display technology for TVs and computer monitors. Steve Suderman, the proprietor of Good Vibes, responded: "We have yet to see an OLED failure of any kind . . . only sold 10 so far but the track record is 100%." Suderman referred us to the website (cliquez ici pour suivre le lien) and an article by Lee Neikirk who wrote: "the chance of your new OLED TV suffering permanent damage is extremely low. While we have seen some complaints from people online, we've never had an OLED suffer from permanent burn-in under our care." The site claims to have tortured a few OLED TVs trying to cause burn-in and found no lasting damage.

The “low battery” warning is one of the great bugbears of the smartphone generation. But it won’t be for much longer if a Chinese battery manufacturer has its way.Dongxu Optoelectronics has developed a battery called the G-King which reportedly recharges within 15 minutes.Their secret? Graphene. The battery is constructed from the wonder material and could be deployed in smartphones, tablets and laptops. But the manufacturer also believes the breakthrough could have significant consequences for the development of electric cars, which are currently held back by lengthy recharges.Dongxu claims that the 4,800mAh capacity battery, the size found in a table or compact laptop, can be discharged and recharged 3,500 times, which is approximately seven times more than a typical lithium ion battery.

You rarely see a solid-state drive, let alone a 256GB SSD, on a sub-$600 laptop, but the F15 comes with one and it helps the performance immensely. Because of its SSD, the laptop duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in a reasonable 44 seconds. That translates into a file- transfer rate of 114.3 megabytes per second, which is a tad short of the 128.1MBps average. However, that's much better than the Inspiron 15 and the HP Notebook 15, whose 1TB, 5,400-rpm hard drives could achieve only 31.9MBps and 29.6MBps, respectively. The IdeaPad 300S and its 500GB 5,400-rpm hard drive reached only 28.1MBps.During the OpenOffice Spreadsheet Macro Test, the F15 paired 20,000 names and addresses in 4 minutes and 29 seconds, beating the 5:02 category average. The HP Notebook 15 and the Inspiron 15 were only a second behind at 4:30, with the IdeaPad 300S in hot pursuit with 4:31.

With its Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU, the F15 could never be mistaken for a gaming laptop. While it could definitely run browser-based titles, taxing games such as Doom, The Witcher 3 or Rise of the Tomb Raider are pretty much out of the question. When we tested its graphics performance with the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark, the laptop notched 58,642, well below the 73,353 average. The Inspiron 15, the IdeaPad 300S and the HP Notebook 15, which have the same GPU, did about the same, scoring 62,763, 52,840 and 51,066, respectively. It won't get you through a full day, but three-quarters of a workday isn't too shabby. On the Laptop Battery Test, the F15 spent 6 hours and 22 minutes continuously surfing the web over Wi-Fi before it tapped out.

MORE: Laptops with the Longest Battery Life While it matched the Inspiron 15's time and beat the HP Notebook 15 (5:51), it still missed the 6:31 mainstream average. The IdeaPad 300S lasted a few minutes more at 6:25.The F15 is a cool customer for the most part. After running a full-screen Hulu video for 15 minutes, the touchpad and center of the laptop measured 84 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The bottom of the notebook reached 101 degrees, which is higher than our 95-degree comfort threshold. If you plan to do a lot of video chatting, you may want to get an external webcam. The test shots I took with the 720p camera were grainy and blown out. My pink dress is at least two shades darker than what the image shows and my skin looks gray. To add insult to injury, there's a bit of lens flare coming from the overhead lights.

TOSHIBA Satellite L650D Notebook Battery

It might be interesting to compare how these services to, say, Hyper-V and VMWare. This is another area where I believe Microsoft is still quite far behind the market leader, but it’s still established itself as a credible number two. While I have a huge problem with the way Microsoft handled the “Get Windows 10” upgrade advertisements in Windows 7 and 8.1 for much of the past year, this kind of pop-up, as described by Laptop Magazine, is perhaps more defensible.Windows 10 — the operating system, not the Edge browser itself — has apparently begun encouraging users to switch away from Chrome, warning them that it’s a drain on their laptop batteries. The premium notebook has a hybrid battery split into two thinner pieces, offering a battery life up to 9 hours 45 minutes. Priced at Rs 1,19,990, HP Spectre will be available in India from July 25, 2016. A hit or a miss, only users will tell.

HP ticked all the boxes it wanted to when it developed the Spectre 13. It's an incredibly thin laptop that won't take up much space no matter where you store it, nor will its 2.45-pound weight break your back. Thanks to its Core i5 and i7 processors and solid overall performance, you can get a lot of work done on this laptop without it slowing you down. It also won't overheat on you thanks to the hyperbaric cooling system, even if you'll have to deal with the occasional hum of the fan.

The Spectre 13's metallic-enhanced design may not be everyone's style, but I do give HP props for not making a MacBook or MacBook Air clone. Windows users have another flashy notebook to choose from in the Spectre 13, and one that will surely make a couple of heads turn. I also appreciate that HP didn't try to make the Spectre 13 a hybrid—it's a laptop for people who prefer laptops thanks to its sturdy hinge and comfortable keyboard. I only wish the trackpad gave me more room to breathe.

Overall, there are scant few compromises with the HP Spectre 13. It doesn't have any 4K or touchscreen display options, so keep that in mind if you've wanting a laptop that supports either. You also won't be able to lean the display back very far due to the hinge's design, but that's a small price to pay. If you've considered the new, £1,049 MacBook but are not married to OS X, the HP Spectre 13 is a good alternative that has more connectivity options and a fair bit more computational grunt.

The Surface Book is a totally new product in Microsoft's range, representing the first laptop the company has ever made. The new but more familiar Surface Pro 4, which launched alongside the Surface Book on 6 October, is designed to be tablet first, laptop second, while the Surface Book takes a laptop-first, tablet-second approach with a 13in detachable touchscreen and a full-size, sturdy keyboard. Here's our review of the Surface Book. Is it 'the ultimate laptop'? Let's find out. Also see: Best new tablets coming in 2016.

Update 30 June 2016: A 1TB version of the Surface Book is now available in the UK, but it costs a staggering £2649 from the Microsoft Store. This new model comes with an Intel Core i7 and 16GB of RAM for beastly performance.

MICROSOFT SURFACE BOOK REVIEW: PRICE, MODELS AND RELEASE DATE

In the UK there are four (update: now five) Surface Book models to choose between with variations on the processor, amount of RAM and storage capacity. There's also the optional dedicated graphics card which is housed in the keyboard. Take a look at table below for specs of each Surface Book model.

Microsoft originally decided not to launch the 1TB model in the UK. The official Surface Book release date in the UK is 18 February. You'll be able to buy the Surface Book from Microsoft, PC World and Currys which kindly supplied us with one to review.
Prices range from £1,299 up to £2,649 so the Surface Book is not a budget laptop by any stretch of the imagination. It's not totally outrageous either but it more expensive than a key rival, the MacBook Pro, which starts from £999 for the 13in model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage. You need to spend £1,999 on the 15in model to get a discrete AMD Radeon R9 graphics card; the rest have Intel Iris Pro Graphics.

Lithium-ion batteries are part of items that we use every day and we hardly think about them, but they can cause explosions and fires if they’re prone to overheating. That’s the case for batteries that are part of laptop computers sold in the last few years by HP and by Sony, and now those batteries have been recalled.

Both HP and Sony recommend powering down your computer and removing the battery if you have an affected model. Run the computer on A/C power, and contact the company for a replacement that should be less prone to overheating. The HP recall includes batteries sold between March 2013 and August 2015, and that work with the HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion. They may have come with the computer or been purchased separately for a backup battery. The CPSC has the specific battery barcodes that you should look for if you have an HP or Compaq laptop. If you have an affected model, go to HP’s recall site or contact the company at 888-202-4320.

Sony also announced a much smaller recall last week, but we thought we’d mention it as long as we’re talking about laptop batteries. The risk of overheating and fire is similar, and these batteries also came from Panasonic. There haven’t been any reported fires or injuries, though, since there are significantly fewer of these batteries out there.

The Sony batteries were for sale from February 2013 through October 2013, and customers could have received them as part of their computer, from a repair by Sony, or purchased separately for a backup battery. The CPSC has the list of affected Vaio models, and you should contact the company at 888-476-6988 for a replacement battery if you have one of them.

Toshiba Tecra A4 Notebook Battery

A Chromebook is a laptop running ChromeOS, an invention by Google. ChromeOs offer a similar experience to Google’s web browser, Chrome. Chrome is a popular browser for both Windows and Mac OS platforms. ChromeOS offers the same experience as the browser with a few tweaks and improvements. A Chromebook is dependent on the internet. However, there are a few ChromeOS apps available offline like Google Sheets, Google Slide, and Google Docs. Works done offline on these apps will automatically sync to the cloud once the laptop has an internet connection.A Chromebook is a simple laptop that does not require massive hardware specs. The primary storage of these laptops is Google Cloud. Google provides 100GB storage in Chromebooks. These are cheap and highly suitable for light computer users.

Are you wondering which the best Chromebook is? The following list 10 of the best Chromebooks in the market. So let’s check out which one is the best Chromebook 2016?Dell's Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1 is a big-screen laptop with a flexible, hybrid design that can actually make you more productive. In fact, it's the largest 2-in-1 laptop I've ever reviewed, boasting a huge 17-inch display, plus long battery life, solid security and fast-enough performance for serious multitasking. On the other hand, the $999 system's size and heft can make folding it into its various modes feel like a workout. That's why it's ultimately a niche device, despite its solid feature set.
The Inspiron 17 promises that you'll never need to break out the projector to show a presentation to a small group. The system's flexible design means you can simply fold it back into stand mode, and its 17.3-inch screen means that meeting participants won't struggle to see your slideshow from across the conference table.

Then again, lugging this system to the conference room takes some real effort compared with smaller hybrid laptops. Tipping the scales at 6.4 lbs., the Inspiron 17 feels a lot heavier than 15-inch rivals like the 4.2-lb. HP Spectre x360 15t and the 4.8-lb. Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W. On the other hand, the Inspiron 17's size and weight are about average among 17-inchers. The notebook's display can also be folded back a full 360 degrees into tablet mode, but let's be honest: The Inspiron 17 is too large to feel very useful as a tablet. Using touch-screen apps with the notebook balanced on my lap was pleasant, but you're going to have to hit the gym if you expect to hold it up or carry it around for any extended period of time.

The Inspiron 17 feels solid and well-built, and I didn't notice any flex in the notebook's lid or keyboard deck. However, this consumer-focused system lacks the extra durability you'll get on business-class systems, such as Dell's Latitude line. You get a pretty typical selection of ports with the Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1. The system's left edge has a USB Type-C connector with DisplayPort support, a USB 3.0 port and an HDMI video out port. The right side, meanwhile, adds a USB 2.0 port, an SD card slot for expanding the system's internal storage, and a lock slot for physically securing the system at your desk. The Inspiron 17's big, beautiful touch display is easily its best feature. No other 2-in-1 offers such a large display, but it's not just the screen's size that impressed me. The 17.3-inch display looks great, cranking out crisp text and vibrant colors. With a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, it feels roomy enough for screen-intensive tasks like editing large documents. A bit of extra resolution would have made split-screen multitasking feel more comfortable, though.

Security

You can unlock the Inspiron 17 just by looking at it, thanks to the system's infrared camera, which is capable of extremely reliable facial recognition. Once you set it up, the system will quickly deliver you to your desktop any time it recognizes your face peering down at it. It even works in a dark room. It's a nice perk for workers who want to keep their laptop locked down without fussing with long passwords. Plus, it works more reliably than fingerprint scanners, which sometimes require two or three swipes before they recognize you.Serious touch typists won't love the Inspiron 17's keyboard, but it's good enough for most workers. It provides just about 1.3 millimeters of key travel, which is less than the 1.5mm that we consider the minimum for a great work laptop. On the bright side, the keys provide enough tactile feedback to make for a reasonably comfortable typing experience.

I wasn't thrilled by the placement of the keyboard layout, which is about an inch higher on the laptop's deck than average. That means you have to reach farther to get your hands onto the keyboard's home row. It's a relatively small but puzzling design decision on Dell's part that makes using the keyboard a bit less comfortable than it would otherwise be.
The Inspiron 17 offers impressive longevity for a 17-incher. The hybrid laptop ran for a solid 7 hours and 28 minutes on our battery test, which simulates continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi. That's loads better than the category average of 4 hours and 15 minutes, and even better than smaller systems like the Satellite Radius P55W (6:54) and the Spectre x360 15t (8:27).

The Inspiron 17 performs with aplomb, speeding through typical work tasks without any slowdown. My review unit came equipped with a 2.5-GHz Intel Core i7-6500U processor, 12GB of RAM, 1TB of solid-state drive (SSD) storage and an Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card with 2GB of video RAM.The system racked up a substantial score of 7,029 on the Geekbench 3 benchmark test, which measures overall performance. That beats the Spectre x360 15t (6,376) and the Satellite Radius P55W (6,021.)It lagged a bit on our spreadsheet test, though, matching 20,000 names to their addresses in 4 minutes and 2 seconds. That's noticeably slower than the category average of 3 minutes and 40 seconds, but it finished about half a minute faster than either the Spectre x360 or the Satellite Radius P55W.

The system's dedicated graphics card is a boon for anyone whose workload includes such graphically intensive tasks as CAD work or 3D modeling. It scored a solid 97,422 on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark test, which is more than double what we saw from the Spectre x360 and the Satellite Radius P55W. That means you can play some games after work hours, though don't expect to run newer games at their highest settings.
Dell sells the Inspiron 17 in a couple of hardware configurations. The baseline model is a good sweet spot for the average worker, with an Intel Core i5-6200U processor, 12GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and an Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card, all for $899.

For this review, I tested a pricier model, which comes with a beefier 2.5-GHz Intel Core i7-6500U processor for $999. That's overkill for most workers, especially since the faster processor won't show noticeable performance gains during typical work tasks.Dell's Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1's large display and flexible design make it a killer presentation tool, but that's not all this large laptop has to offer business users. Its speedy performance can handle serious productivity, and its beefy battery lasts and lasts. But the system remains a niche device, if only because smaller 2-in-1s are so much more manageable. The Inspiron 17's overall size and weight can make it feel downright unwieldy when you're switching between modes. It's probably too heavy to carry around the office very often, let alone on your daily commute. HP's Spectre x360 15t is a solid option that's more portable, though it has a smaller 15-inch display.

Still, if you want the benefits of a big screen on a flexible, folding laptop, there's no better option than the Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1.Microsoft arrived late to the game and is still playing catchup against a formidable rival. Amazon transformed its own internal web resources into AWS in 2006, and it’s already become a nearly $9 billion a year business. The company expects it to grow as big as its retail business one day. Microsoft only launched Azure in 2010 and doesn’t even break out its revenue yet. (Barron’s estimated its first quarter revenue at $560 million, compared to $2.5 billion for AWS during the same period.)As more enterprises decide to ship off their infrastructure to the cloud, Microsoft wants to be their provider. So far, AWS’ lead shows no real signs of narrowing.

Toshiba satellite c650-15z Notebook Battery

The construction. As hinted at above, this feels like a sturdy, well-built device. From the packaging down to the hardware, the MateBook may be trying to mimic Apple’s decades of success in the hardware space, and it’s not far off. (Though Apple would almost certainly never pair a white device with a brown leather case. It looks like a Holstein cow.)

It’s a full-fledged PC. No mobile versions of apps or games here—if you want to run Photoshop or World of Warcraft, you can. The MateBook runs Windows 10, so any program that won’t be too much of a drag on the processor should run fine, meaning you’ll have the same experience answering emails, writing documents, creating spreadsheets, and browsing the web as you would on a full-fledged laptop.

What’s not so good

The keyboard case. While the keys are probably the best I’ve come across on a tablet keyboard attachment—I’d go as far as to say they’re even better to type on than some flagship laptops’, including new MacBook—it’s still not great. Writing this post, I made far more typos than I usually do, which slowed me down as I worked. I also found the case’s built-in touchpad mouse rather inaccurate; oftentimes I would just poke the screen to get the cursor where I wanted it to be.

The battery life. It’s not ideal: If you’re planning on replacing your laptop with the MateBook, make sure to carry the charger with you wherever you go. I tended to get between three and four hours of charge when using the tablet with the brightness turned all the way up, running just a few programs.
It’s running Windows 10. Whatever you think of Microsoft’s latest operating system, it’s safe to say that it hasn’t been optimized for tablets. The software runs smoothly on the MateBook, but a lot of on-screen icons are still too small and fiddly to tap accurately every time, even in the OS’s “tablet mode.” For example: You can run Excel on the MateBook with ease, but good luck doing anything complex. Also: Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual assistant, didn’t understand me at all.

The MateBook’s additional dock box.(Huawei)

Awkward ports. Rather like the newest MacBook, the MateBook only has a single USB-C port for peripherals and power supply. For $89, Huawei sells a little box called the MateDock, which plugs into the USB port and gives you HDMI, VGA, and ethernet ports, as well as two additional USB ports. But then you have to carry around this vestigial little box wherever you’re taking your tablet, which seems more cumbersome than just using a laptop. Also: When the MateBook is docked into the keyboard, the headphone jack is on the top-left of the device, and when headphones are plugged in, the cable tends to drape in front of the screen, which is a bit annoying.

The speakers. Although they’re relatively loud for a tablet, they’re exceedingly tinny.

It’s not cheap. The MateBook starts at $699, which is pretty reasonable for a powerful tablet like this. But for that price, you’re getting a relatively slow Intel Core m3 processor, 4 GB of memory, and 128 GB of storage. If you want to bump up to a faster m5 processor, and double the memory and storage, you’re looking at a price tag of $999. There’s also a version with 512 GB of storage that costs $1,199. But factor in the price of a keyboard case, a MateDock, and if you want it, Huawei’s stylus, and even the base model will run you $976, which is about how much you’d be able to spend on an actual, powerful Windows laptop.

If you’re in the market for a powerful tablet and you’re not a fan of the Microsoft Surface line, then the Huawei MateBook is a worthy contender. But to get power and productivity from this device you’re going to have to spend a fair amount of money, which begs the question of whether it’s just better to get a laptop. For about the same price as the base MateBook, with all the peripherals included, you can buy a far more powerful Dell XPS 13 laptop, which reviewers have been enjoying. It ultimately comes down to whether a touchscreen really matters to you.

The MateBook really is a good device, but given the price, it’s not clear that it’s a device anyone actually needs. It does show, however, that Huawei knows how to make some solid computing hardware. Whether the company will be able to successfully sell that hardware, and any future tech, in the US remains to be seen.

What one really looks for in the highly-competitive notebook market is innovation, literally by the second. Hitting the right notes, processor giant HP has launched, what it claims to be the world’s thinnest laptop, Spectre 13 in India. As thin as an AAA- battery at just 10.4 mm, the notebook weighs only 1.1 kg. It is thinner than both MacBook and MacBook Air.

Equipped with a powerful Intel® Core™ i5 and i7 processors, 8 GB RAM, and a hyperbaric cooling technology, the notebook is high-on technology. Add to that its slim and slick looks, dark grey and copper finish and you have a stylish product. Promising to give a superb viewing experience, the laptop comes with a Gorilla Glass 4 display and a 13.3- inch full HD IPS screen.Largely built using aluminum, HP Spectre has a carbon-fibre bottom that creates a thin-durable profile, keeping the total weight of the notebook at just 1.1 kg. The laptop has a jewel-like finish and a hidden piston hinge that creates the illusion of a hinge-less design, which gives it a futuristic look.

Gorilla Glass 5 launched this week. With every version of Gorilla Glass this product becomes nearly twice as hard to break as the prior version. Given the glass only accounts for around one percent of the overall cost of the phone—according to Corning—and we all have likely experienced the sudden shock of a broken screen resulting in either needing a new phone or screen (and losing the use of our phone in the meantime), it might be worth waiting to buy that new smartphone until the second half of the year when phones using this new Gorilla Glass show up.I spent the day at Corning this week and it was an eye-opening experience. It kind of had to be—I was running on very little sleep.

A few years back Sapphire was all the rage and it was going to take Gorilla Glass out of the market. That didn’t actually happen because while Sapphire does resist scratches better, it is a crystal—making it very brittle, and it is wicked expensive to make with acceptable quality at large sizes. This is why you do see it in watches but don’t see it in phones. Glass does flex at least a little and we all put our phones in our back pockets and forget from time to time. Feeling that snap when the screen lets go when we sit down isn’t playful or fun—it’s expensive. (By the way, apparently Corning has a hybrid product coming for watches that has hardness approaching Sapphire but without the downside of crystal).

But there has been pressure on Corning from a product out of China called Dragon Glass. Corning didn’t call this brand out by name, but it clearly wanted to make the point that all hardened glass isn’t created equal. Corning’s patented process is unique and results in a far more durable product. Corning allowed us to tour the testing lab where they showed screen after screen and device after device using this lesser—and undoubtedly cheaper—screen material failing in test after test, followed by largely earlier versions of Gorilla Glass not nearly as strong as this new Generation 5 product which was unbreakable. Corning did disclose that from time to time it does break but at a far lower frequency, and also showcased that this advantage was particularly pronounced the thinner the glass was.For some reason smartphone OEMs want to make their phones as thin as possible and while I’m not sure that is smart because we are losing utility—especially battery life—I have to admit the result is attractive.

One of the interesting aspects of Gorilla Glass that is new is that it is being increasingly put in cars. This speaks better about this idea of it being strong while thin than I think the thin phone concept does. In this case it removes a lot of weight particularly in vehicles like the Tesla X (which doesn’t yet use it) which has a ton of glass—and for an electric vehicle increased weight cuts down on battery life. Currently it is only used in a few super cars because car companies in that class are willing to pay almost anything to lose an ounce. But, I expect, this will be far more common, particularly in electric cars once they become more mainstream because range is a huge differentiator in that segment.

I’d watched “London Has Fallen” prior to going to Corning and in that movie the heroes were escaping in a bullet proof car, which eventually got filled with bullets. It struck me that currently bulletproof glass is incredibly thick and heavy and with concerns about getting shot are at an all-time high. I wonder if, at some future date, we’ll have a bullet-proof option. If we do I’ll bet it comes from Corning. There is nothing like breaking a phone to ruin your day. With every version of Gorilla Glass this becomes more and more remote. The latest version, Gorilla Glass 5, will be showing up in phones in the second half of the year. If you are in the market for a phone and aren’t in the 15 percent of people who don’t drop them, you might want to wait until that generation ships. It could make the difference between dropping your phone and having a heart attack and dropping your phone and thanking Corning.

By the way, Corning showcased one unique use for the glass. Printing a picture on it that you could then attach to something like a laptop lid to create a rich durable custom finish. The showcase product was a laptop and, I expect, that’ll be an option at some point. I could see putting a picture of one of my cars on my laptop lid.Which is the best Chromebook? The first Chromebook was invented in 2011 by Google. The mixed reception back then could have discouraged manufacturers, but the Chromebook market has exploded in the past few years. Now there are many Chromebook models by different manufacturers, other than Google. The question now is: What is the best Chromebook?

Sony VGP-BPL9 Notebook Battery

This is a very typical problem and usually happens when new Windows operating systems are released. The root cause is either one of the following: either the video drivers aren't fully up to par with the new operating system, or there are bugs in the operating system which are interfering with how the adaptive brightness feature is supposed to work. Thus, some laptop users will have strange display issues as Mary described. There are a few things you can try, and I'll explain how to do that step-by-step below. Please note that these steps work for Windows 7, 8, and 10.1. Disable the Adaptive Brightness via Power Plan SettingsThe first thing you can try is to disable the Adaptive Brightness feature via the Power Options menu inside of Control Panel.

To do so: click Start, then type in power options (no quotes); wait for Power Options to appear in the list, then click it. You should now see a heading that says Preferred plans and a plan underneath that is already selected. Click the link next to the selected plan that says Change plan settings (pic). The Edit Plan Settings window will now appear; click on the link that says Change advanced power settings. A new window will appear with the title Power Options. Scroll down the list until you see an option for Display Brightness and put both on battery and plugged in at 100%; scroll down a bit more and do the same for Dimmed Display Brightness; scroll down more until you see Enable adaptive brightness and put On battery: and Plugged in: to both off. Finally, click Apply, then OK.Proceed to test whether or not the adaptive brightness feature has been disabled (described next). How to Test the Adaptive Brightness

There are two ways to test to see if the adaptive brightness has been disabled:a. Unplug your laptop from the wall; this usually (instantly) causes adaptive brightness to 'kick in'. If nothing changes that is a good sign, but just to make sure - try step (b) below.b. Another way to make adaptive brightness 'kick in' is to reboot the machine and login to the computer. Before you reboot, bookmark this page so you can come back to it. As soon as you log back into Windows, the adaptive brightness should 'kick in'; if it does not, then you are good to go and nothing else needs to be done.If the adaptive brightness is still enabled, proceed to the next step. There is a Microsoft service that runs in the background and is responsible for monitoring the display for changes in light, which then causes the adaptive brightness to 'kick in'. To disable this service, highlight the text below using your mouse:

Right click the above text with your mouse and select Copy from the dialogue menu. Next, click the Start menu, then type in cmd (no quotes); wait for CMD.EXE or Command Prompt to appear in the list, then right click it and select Run as Administrator. A black command prompt window should now appear; right click in the middle of the window and select Paste from the dialogue menu. The commands you copied above should now be output onto the command line. For all intents and purposes, the adaptive brightness should be completely disabled now. You can test to see if the adaptive brightness has been disabled by following the section How to Test Adaptive Brightness in Step #1. If still no luck, proceed with Step #3 below.

As I mentioned previously, issues often arise with the adaptive brightness when a new version of Windows comes out because there are bugs in the operating system or video driver (or both). Another way to resolve the adaptive brightness problem is to either update your video card driver (if an update is available), or use the stock Microsoft video card driver.Click Start, then right click My Computer or This PC, then select Properties. The System window will appear; on the left side you will see a link to Device Manager - click that. The Device Manager window will now appear; scroll down the list until you see Display Adapters, then expand the list. Your display adapter name and model number should be displayed - make note of both.

Next, open a browser window and search for your adapter name and model number in google, followed by the word driver. For example, if your display is an AMD Radeon 5700 Series, then search for AMD Radeon 5700 Series driver. Alternatively, you can go straight to the manufacturer's website and download the latest driver there; if it's an AMD video card, then go to amd.com to find the driver. If it's an Nvidia card, then go to nvidia.com to find the driver. If still no luck, you can try using the Microsoft basic display adapter. I advise against doing this unless everything else I mentioned above fails, because this display driver is extremely basic and may not allow your monitor to display in the proper resolution.

To roll back to the Microsoft basic display adapter, do the follow:Go back to the device manager (as mentioned above), then double click on your display adapter to edit its options. The Properties window should now appear; look for an option that says Update Driver and click it. Windows will now present you with two options: Search automatically for updated driver software, or Browse my computer for driver software - choose the latter.A new window will appear asking for the path of the driver you wish to install; further down you will see an option to Let me pick from the list of device drivers on my computer - choose that. The next window will appear with the title Select the driver you want to install for this hardware - choose the option that says Microsoft basic display driver, then click Next. Follow the instructions on the proceeding screens; you will probably need to reboot to make the changes take effect.

Just about every major computer company has jumped on the tablet-that’s-almost-a-laptop bandwagon at this point. Apple has the iPad Pro, Microsoft the Surface, Samsung the TabPro S, to name a few. Now, Chinese telecom giant Huawei has thrown its hat in the ring: The company’s MateBook tablet went on sale in the US July 11.

Huawei has been criticized in the past for releasing gadgets that seem to confirm a Western assumption about Chinese tech companies—that they manufacture knock-offs of popular products lacking the quality or durability of the things being knocked off. By rolling out its smartphones in the US over the past few years, Huawei has been trying to change that perception, and its MateBook tablet is intended as a resounding show of competence. Huawei would like to identify itself as part of a band of Chinese companies, including drone manufacturer DJI, search giant Baidu, and internet company Tencent, whose products can stand on their own against any comparable offerings from the West.

Quartz tested out—and wrote the entirety of this review on—the MateBook for the last few weeks. Here’s what we thought:

The screen. The 12-inch HD screen looks great, whether you’re working on spreadsheets or watching a movie on Netflix. It also has a wide viewing angle, meaning it’s actually a decent portable device for watching movies or TV with friends.

It’s (kind of) a laptop. This is silly, but for me, it was kind of a big deal: Most tablet-keyboard case combinations only work on flat surfaces—it’s literally in the name of Microsoft’s tablet line—meaning that you can’t use them on your lap or anywhere not particularly level. The obvious answer to this problem is that you can hold these tablets in your hands, but it’s not always comfortable to do that for long periods of time. The MateBook, with its keyboard case attached, actually works on your lap. It’s not as sturdy as a proper laptop, but it’ll definitely work for a couple hours—or until the battery dies.

It’s portable. One of the biggest selling points of a tablet over a traditional laptop is its weight and size. The MateBook is no exception, weighing in at only about 640 grams (about 1.4 pounds). If you shell out for the additional keyboard case, you can wrap the MateBook in its squishy, leather-esque hide and tote it around easily. (The keyboard case is apparently also water-resistant, according to Huawei, but I didn’t test that claim.) That being said, the case’s ability to transform into a keyboard and stand is a bit awkward—it’ll probably take you a few times to figure out how to prop up the tablet properly.

Sony VGP-BPS2A/S Notebook Battery

In terms of fashion, the AyeGear J25 is not an incredibly stylish jacket -- but it's not ugly either. As a 20-something who typically wears skinny jeans and a slim v-neck crew shirt, I found the jacket to be baggier than ones I normally wear. To be fair, however, the jacket serves a specific purpose that inherently prevents it from being more of a formfitting jacket that I might purchase from a fashion retailer like H&M.
It also looks much nicer as a vest, in my opinion, so give it a go without the sleeves and hood when possible or consider the cheaper V26 Vest instead. One knock against the AyeGear J25 is its price: £149.99, which is $198.75 in the U.S. or around $260 in Canada and Australia based on current exchange rates -- and that's after the British pound's recent post-Brexit vote decline. The jacket is certainly convenient, but whether it is worth dropping two bills on is debatable. As is often the case, a better deal can be found on Amazon, where the jacket sells for between $149.99 and $190. Prices vary depending on the size selected.

AyeGear's J25 Jacket is a convenient, multipurpose jacket that fills a niche, particularly for the outdoorsman or frequent flyers, but its drawbacks of being somewhat heavy and expensive should be duly considered. For most people, it may be wiser to save your money and stick with a traditional jacket and backpack combo. The J25 Jacket can be purchased on AyeGear's website (~$198) or Amazon ($149.99-$190) in small, medium, large, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, or 5XL. Free delivery is offered within the U.K., while worldwide shipping is available.
San Jose resident Kevin Nguyen will appear in court next Monday for a second arraignment, after a judge determined there was enough evidence to proceed with a trial in the murder of 20-year-old Milpitas resident Danica Bascos. On July 12, Superior Court Judge Shelyna V. Brown handed down a ruling that Nguyen, accused of killing his ex-girlfriend in her bedroom last fall, should be held to answer for her slaying, after a two-day preliminary hearing in June.

At that hearing, the judge asserted that based on the evidence, surveillance video and witness testimony presented there was sufficient probable cause for count one, and the defendant is guilty thereof. Brown also said she found there was sufficient evidence of guilt against Nguyen for the prior count of battery against Bascos as well as a count of battery against Bascos' then boyfriend John Souza. The judge also noted surveillance video from the day last September -- when Nguyen allegedly committed battery against Bascos and Souza -- where the defendant can be seen purchasing the knife, mask and gloves that Milpitas police later found at his residence.

Brown further referenced evidence presented by Deputy District Attorney Kalila Spain, during the preliminary hearing that took place on June 16 and June 27, that included the emotional testimony of Danica Basco's father about finding his only child's body after she was murdered on Oct. 5, 2016. It also included testimony from Milpitas police Detective Abbie Serrano, who testified Nguyen had Googled how to kill a person and the best way to dispose of a body before he went to the home of his ex-girlfriend with the intention of murdering her.Furthermore, Serrano said Nguyen admitted to using a black-handled knife he'd purchased from a Lucky Supermarket -- a weapon that was recovered from his bedroom -- to stab Bascos in her left breast, her chest and repeatedly in her back inside her Manzano Street home, near Milpitas High School. Nguyen also told the detective that Bascos pled for her life, but he continued to stab her.

After he stabbed her he checked to see if she had a pulse, and she did, he checked again and then she didn't, Serrano told the court on June 27.The detective said Nguyen admitted to killing Bascos because she lied about cheating on him, and didn't want to stay in a relationship with him. Nguyen also said he wore gloves so he wouldn't leave fingerprints. He told me 'the demons' in his head told him to kill her, I asked him if demons had talked to him when he purchased the gloves, mask or knife, he said 'no' ...he said he was mad and he identified himself as a jealous person, Serrano told the court. She also testified that Nguyen had taken Bascos' laptop, cell phone, purse, and car keys, and had told her he intended to use her phone to lure her boyfriend Souza and then shoot him in the head.Serrano confirmed on June 27 that she'd been told Nguyen had not graduated from high school, did not have a GED, could not hold a steady job, did not have a driver's license, did have a developmental disability, does not live independently and could not use household appliances without issues. Nguyen was also being seen at San Andreas Regional Center, which provides case management and services to people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, at the time of the murder, according to the defense.

On Friday, Nguyen's public defender Kelley Kulick said by email, On Monday, July 25 I anticipate a plea of 'not guilty' will be entered and the matter will be set for trial. I do not disagree with the court's finding of probable cause at the preliminary hearing. The court hearing is scheduled to convene at 1:30 p.m. July 25 at San Jose Hall of Justice for the second arraignment, during which time Nguyen is expected to enter a plea and the case will be set for trial.Gigabyte has spent the past few years trying to catch up to Razer and its flagship gaming laptop, the Blade. Razer practically invented the thin-and-light gaming laptop category with the Blade in 2013, and since then it’s slowly evolved into a great laptop for both productivity and gaming.More recently, gaming laptop manufacturers have followed Razer’s lead, trying to position their computers as productivity devices that double as weekend gaming rigs. Gigabyte continues the tradition with the new Aero 14 laptop, which it says can get 10 hours of battery life in a productivity mode that switches over to Intel’s integrated graphics during less intensive activity.

The laptop weighs in at just under 4.2 pounds with a thickness of 19.9mm, which stacks up pretty well with the Razer Blade which weighs in at 4.25 pounds with a 17.8mm closed height.Gigabyte also included a few features for power users, like the HDMI 2.0 port which lets you connect the laptop to an external monitor and use the full 4K resolution. Software add-ons like the Fan Tweak let you adjust the fan speed depending on the type of activity you’re working on. Finally, the macro keys along the side of the keyboard are customizable and can change color with the Macro Hub included software.Lenovo India on Wednesday launched the Ideapad 110 budget laptop, targeted at the first-time personal computer (PC) buyers in India. Available via retail stores, the laptop comes only in a Ebony Black colour variant.

While the base model comes with an Intel Celeron dual-core processor, options up to Intel Pentium quad-core processors will be available, Lenovo said in a statement.Ideapad 110 is a value laptop with features users need, but without a high price tag. Its dependable processing power, good memory, ample storage, attractive display, and integrated graphics makes it one of the best entry-level laptops for the college goers and young working professionals, said Bhaskar Choudhuri, Director-Marketing, Lenovo India. The company added that under its Back To College initiative, college students can avail EMIs on the purchase of select models of Ideapad 110 - the offer will be applicable in all cities until July 31. Additionally, students are entitled to get up to 3 years of warranty worth Rs. 4,499 along with 1 year of accidental damage protection (ADP) cover with an additional payment of Rs. 599.

Featuring an improved hinge design that allows for a smooth 180-degree swivel into a flat position, the Lenovo Ideapad 110 comes with a DVD/CD-RW drive. The Lenovo Ideapad 110 sports a 15.6-inch HD (1366x768 pixel) display, 4GB of DDR3 RAM (up to 8GB), up to a 1TB SSD, and a 3-cell 24WHr battery which can offer up to 4 hours of continuous video playback. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB 3.0, and HDMI. The laptop weighs less than 2.2kg, and also features an integrated webcam with microphone. I just installed Windows 10 on my laptop, but I'm having a problem with the screen fading so dark I can hardly see it. I've tried adjusting the screen brightness manually on the laptop by pressing the FN (function) key + up arrow key, but the screen brightness won't say - it keeps going dark automatically on its own. The screen goes dim whether or not I have the laptop plugged into the power outlet, or if it's running on battery. It also seems to happen immediately as soon as I login to Windows. I have tried changing the Power Settings (via Control Panel) so that the adaptive brightness is turned off, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. Can you help?

Sony VAIO VGN-NR Notebook Battery

The ThinkPad T560's advantage over similar systems, like the ThinkPad T460, is, of course, its large 15.6-inch screen. My review unit came equipped with a 1920 x 1080, nontouch display, which is just sharp enough for a screen this size. It feels roomy enough for screen-intensive tasks like editing large spreadsheets, and split-screen multitasking is comfortable.I'm a big fan of the matte finish that comes on most ThinkPad models, including this one. The screen has an anti-glare coating that wards off distracting reflections from windows and overhead lights. And while many matte displays are a bit on the dim side, this one offers average brightness, which is good for typical indoor use. A couple of other display options are available, including a 1080p touch screen. I wouldn't recommend that option, since power-hungry touch panels tend to drain your battery in a hurry. You can also opt for a low-res, 1366 x 768 display, which most workers should avoid.

True to the ThinkPad brand, the T560 comes with a top-notch keyboard that's perfect for marathon typing sessions. You get an extremely generous 2.41 millimeters of key travel, which is well above the 1.5mm that we consider the minimum for a work laptop. The keys also offer good amount of feedback on each stroke, even if they don't feel quite as snappy as the keys on the ThinkPad T460.In addition to the standard touchpad, the ThinkPad T460 includes a red TrackPoint nub amidst the G, H and B keys. This lets you precisely control your mouse cursor without moving your hands from home row on the keyboard, but it can take some getting used to if you're a TrackPoint newbie.

Battery life

If longevity is your top priority, there's no better laptop than the ThinkPad T560. The system lasted longer on our battery test than any other laptop we've ever tested — at least, if you opt for the extended, six-cell battery. With the beefier battery attached, the T560 ran for 21 hours and 3 minutes, which is about twice as long as this system ran with the standard, three-cell battery. That's long enough to last through two complete workdays and then some.Even the standard battery life of 10 hours and 10 minutes is pretty impressive when you consider that the average 15-inch laptop runs for just over 6 hours on the same battery test, which simulates continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi. Rival systems, including the Toshiba Tecra A50(5:59) and Dell Latitude E5570 (7:17), all lagged well behind the T560.

Heavy multitasking is no problem for the ThinkPad T560. My review unit came equipped with an Intel Core i5-6300U processor with 8GB of RAM, a configuration that allowed me to breeze through my workday without a hitch. Some rival 15-inchers are even more powerful, though. The T560 racked up a very solid score of 6,210 on the Geekbench 3 benchmark test, which measures overall performance. That score's pretty good for the money, even if it lags slightly behind the category average of 7,625. Pricier systems like the Core i7-6820HQ-equipped Dell Latitude E5570 (12,148) blow the ThinkPad T560 out of the water, but the Dell's performance is overkill for the average worker.

The T560 also did pretty well on our spreadsheet test, matching 20,000 names to their addresses in a very solid 4 minutes and 14 seconds. That time beats the category average of 5 minutes and 5 seconds, but runs about a minute behind pricier rivals.
The ThinkPad T560 can be ordered in a huge variety of hardware configurations through Lenovo.com. The baseline model offers a low-res 1366 x 768-pixel display, a Core i5-6200U processor with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive, all for $809.Our midrange review unit hits a much better sweet spot for the average worker. It comes equipped with a higher-res 1920 x 1080-pixel display, a more powerful Core i5-6300U processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of speedy solid-state drive (SSD) storage, all for $1,286.It's hard to find fault with the ThinkPad T560. It's simply the best 15-inch business laptop on the market, combining solid performance with strong security, a quality keyboard and a durable design. It's absolutely epic battery life doesn't hurt, either.

Commuters who don't mind sacrificing a bit of screen space might be better off with Lenovo's more portable ThinkPad T460, which is similar to the T560 but has a smaller, 14-inch display and slightly shorter battery life. Dell's XPS 15 is also a solid pick thanks to its relatively lightweight design, but it lacks business-class durability and security. That makes the ThinkPad T560 the big-screen business laptop to buy.

One of the realities of living in Toronto, Canada, about a two-hour drive from the nearest American city when traffic cooperates, is experiencing a distinctly four-season climate. Winter lives up to the stereotype of being bitterly cold, before giving way to a mild and rainy spring, and eventually a hot and humid summer. The warmth lasts for no more than three to four months, however, before the leaves turn orange in October and Starbucks brings out the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

For the past three months, I have been testing the AyeGear J25 Jacket to see how it holds up to those Canadian extremes, starting with a below-freezing, snowy day in early April to a comparatively sweltering 90º day in mid July. In addition to wearing the jacket around Toronto, I brought it with me on a recent trip to San Francisco, allowing me to test its convenience going through airport security and away from home in general. Ahead, find out if the jacket lived up to the task. The jacket has over 25 separate compartments for storing portable devices, valuables, travel essentials, and general items, including six credit card and ID holders, two hand pockets, two chest pockets, two sleeve pockets, two smartphone pockets, two tablet pockets, two pen holders, two coin holders, two memory stick holders, two SD card holders, one back laptop pocket, and one passport holder.

There is also a Velcro-based earphone routing system along the neck of the jacket, an elastic strap that can hold a drink bottle, and an in-pocket retractable reel for securing your keys -- or anything with a carabiner clip.
On my trip to San Francisco, I packed a tableful of items into the jacket with ease, including a 15-inch MacBook Pro, Apple Watch, two iPhones, two SD cards, EarPods, Lightning-to-USB cable, wall charger, pack of chewing gum, car keys, sunglasses, passport, boarding pass, charging case, portable battery pack, wallet, and loose change. In addition to all of that, the jacket could hold two iPads.

My immediate reaction after putting on the jacket was that, perhaps as to be expected, it was rather heavy. It almost feels like wearing a lead apron at a dentist office during teeth X-rays. Walking around with all of your electronics and personal belongings strapped to your body obviously hunkers you down somewhat, and wearing this jacket for an extended period of time can become rather uncomfortable.
The weight might be a worthy tradeoff for frequent flyers, however, as the jacket makes airport security a much less frustrating experience. Anyone that has stood in line at the TSA checkpoint knows it can be a tedious, albeit important, process: take your shoes off, take your laptop out of its bag, and place all of your individual belongings in the bins before proceeding through the metal detector. When wearing the jacket, however, all you have to do is quickly take it off with your shoes, much to the delight of those waiting behind you.
AyeGear's J25 Jacket is built to last in all weather conditions. It is made from a mixture of cotton (67 percent) and nylon (33 percent) that proved to be waterproof -- water drops bead off -- and wrinkle free. The jacket also has an adjustable rollaway zipped hood, a breathable lining, and removable sleeves to turn the jacket into a vest, making it useful for hiking trips or similar activities in warmer weather.

Samsung AA-PB9NC6W Notebook Battery

Another feature meant to please the crowd is the “HDR mode” that alters the colour of the 1080p display. I’m using quotations when calling it “HDR mode” because it is an infuriatingly confusing feature. HDR is a term currently used to describe two things.HDR in photography, where identical photos with different exposures are layered together to provide a highly detailed image (either static or moving).

HDR in video, where those highly detailed images are then reproduced perfectly on very expensive TVs.

Samsung has introduced a third HDR mode that has nothing to do with HDR and everything to do with the rising popularity of the term. Samsung’s HDR mode is really just “brighter colours and higher contrast at the cost of accuracy.” It’s not so much HDR as a badly named display preset for people who don’t know any better.

Samsung Finally Gave Us the Laptop Apple Should Have

Which is a lot of people! I review displays for a living, so I’ve gotten very good at judging the accuracy of one and I deeply value that accuracy, but I also know that friends and family often find “accurate” to mean “dull and sort of brown.” This mode is absolutely for them — too bad it couldn’t have a different name.As it stands, calling the preset “HDR mode” is bound to lead to people proudly showing off their $US800 ($1,048) laptop and saying it’s got a display that’s better than the one on an $US8000 ($10,481) TV. This would be inaccurate, so if you buy this laptop do not do this.

Should You Buy It?

And you should buy this laptop — at least if you’re in the mood for a not-so-lean but very mean Windows machine. Sending a kid to college? Are yourself a kid headed to college? This is the perfect device for you. It’s what used to be the bread and butter of Apple and Dell. This big guy can go anywhere and do just about anything, and won’t make your bank account cry in the process. Apple take note, this is what people are actually looking for in a laptop under $US1000.You might call this one a long-term review: I've had these headphones now for over six months and I thought it might be worth pointing out what I like about them and why I currently default to them when using headphones.First of all, wireless headphones have huge ergonomic advantages over physically tethered ones. They also have a built-in feature I regularly use: a hands-free microphone that lets you make and take calls without holding your phone up to your mouth.

That said, these Sennheiser headphones have a few other advantages. Their physical styling is about the best on the market, with just the right amount of understated fashion and design. This is obviously in the eye of the beholder, but I'd take these over candy-coloured DJ lookalikes any day of the week.

They're also quite comfortable, which is a crucial consideration. I have a rather big cranium and any unevenness will dig in mercilessly - but the leather used is soft and adaptive. These aren't the cushiest on the market (Sony, arguably holds that crown), but they're just fine.
And the Momentum headphones have active noise-cancelling technology on board. This means that they cut out a great deal of the external clattering and chattering around you to let you focus on whatever your Bluetooth audio source is. Indeed, you don't even need to have something playing - you can simply turn the headphones on and you'll get the advantage of the noise-cancellation. (I use this a lot.)The quality of the playback is very good for wireless headphones. There are some useful physical controls on the headphones, including a volume button and track controls.

Battery life is about the same as any other pair of Bluetooth wireless cans I use - you'll get a week from a single charge if you listen for around an hour a day. It's rechargeable using a standard Micro USB cable.

It's taken a while, but 'convertible' laptops are starting to bring some real extra functionality to portable PCs. Take HP's 13-inch Spectre X360, which I've been playing with for a couple of weeks. Other than some high-end technical specifications, which I'll get to in a second, its main appeal is the screen flexibility that its hinge affords.

Basically, you can flip the screen right around until it backs onto the keyboard. But all points in between make it functional, too - you can stand it up as a single screen if you want to for presentations or simply to watch movies on. Obviously, HP's intent is that this also makes it useful as a 'tablet', although I still have reservations about Windows-based tablets - Windows was, and remains, an awkward operating system for touchscreen operations. It's simply not optimised for this form of input: try to toggle quickly through applications using just the touchscreen features and you'll see what I mean.

To be fair, if you never used any of the Spectre X360's tablet touchscreen features, you'd still have a pretty powerful, slick laptop. The super-slim form factor is gorgeous, with a silver metallic body making it feel like a cross between a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro.The trackpad on it is huge - almost seven inches across. The backlit keyboard is very comfortable to type on, too.

If you like your physical connections, this laptop has them all with three USB ports, a HDMi port and a memory-card reader. There's also a volume button on the side of the laptop as well as a shortcut key to the home screen. The bright 1080p screen is excellent (it's configurable up to 4K), with very decent speakers built in.

My test laptop had 128GB of storage memory, an Intel i5 chip and 4GB of Ram (although the specs HP gives out appear to stipulate 8GB of Ram as standard). If I was to pick any holes in it, it might be its weight. At 1.5kg this is a little heavier than some other similarly sized skinny laptops out there.

But otherwise, if you need to stick with Windows and are looking for some flexibility, this is an excellent buy.

Serious business users who want a large display and business-class security can't go wrong with Lenovo's ThinkPad T560. The system provides fast performance for heavy multitasking and long enough battery life to get you through a transcontinental business flight, and its top-tier keyboard is just icing on the cake. Other 15-inchers are sleeker and more portable, but the ThinkPad T560 is the most well-rounded.

There are plenty of 15-inch laptops on the market that are slimmer and lighter than the 4.8-lb. ThinkPad T560. Dell's 4.4-lb. XPS 15 stands out as a more commuter-friendly option, though it's not as secure or durable as the ThinkPad T560. If you can live with a slightly smaller display, the ThinkPad T460 is a whole pound lighter. But compared to other business-class 15-inchers, Lenovo's system is actually relatively portable. Dell's 5.6-lb Latitude E5570, for example, is both thicker and heavier. That's less true if you opt for the ThinkPad T560's extended battery, which adds about an extra half pound to the system's weight. The extended battery still comes highly recommended, though, since it nearly doubles the laptop's battery life — but more on that later.

Commuters and frequent travelers will appreciate the ThinkPad T560's extremely durable design. The system sports a glass-fiber-reinforced shell that feels extremely sturdy and rigid; I didn't notice a hint of flex in the lid or keyboard deck. Lenovo says the system has MIL-SPEC-grade durability and was designed to withstand short drops and dings. You get a generous array of ports with the ThinkPad T560. The right edge has two USB 3.0 ports, a mini DisplayPort for connecting to monitors and projectors, and a lock slot for physically securing your laptop at your desk.

Security-minded workers will find a lot to like here. The ThinkPad T560 comes with all the standard business-class security options, including Trusted Platform Module-based hardware encryption and Intel vPro technology that enables corporate IT departments to remotely manage the system. Small business owners will probably get more use out of the fingerprint scanner, an optional feature that can be added for $20. It's a great perk for workers who want to keep their laptops locked down without fussing with a password every time they turn their machines on. Unfortunately, the T560 comes with a swipe-based fingerprint scanner that isn't as reliable as the single-touch scanner on systems like the ThinkPad T460s. It occasionally failed to recognize my print, asking me to swipe a second time.

Samsung R540 Notebook Battery

The responsive touch screen on the ZenPad Z8 allows for fast animations between home screens and when scrolling through web pages. For the most part, I was satisfied with the tablet's performance, though I did notice a delay of a second or two when switching between open apps. This mixed performance shows in the ZenPad Z8's scores on synthetic benchmark tests.Asus ZenPad Z8The ZenPad Z8 scored 3,355 on the Geekbench 3 general performance benchmark, which beats the scores of the G Pad F 8.0 (933) and average tablet (2,286) and edges out the Predator 8's showing (3,112).The ZenPad Z8 is OK for gaming, notching a 17,846 on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited test, which beats the marks of the G Pad F 8.0 (3,735) and average tablet (11,245). The built-to-game Predator 8 (20,785) earned a higher score. The tablet didn't fare as well on our video-editing test, taking 4 minutes and 19 seconds to transcode a 1080p video to 480p using the VidTrim app. The average tablet finishes this test in less time (3:13), but the Predator 8 (6:48) and G Pad F 8.0 (13:00) took even longer than the Asus.

Asus ZenPad Z8The ZenPad Z8's cameras capture vivid color and fine detail, but the preloaded camera app defaults the selfie shooter to the overzealous beautification mode. The tablet's 8-megapixel rear camera captured solid landscape images from our roof, accurately reproducing the calm blue sky, lush green shrubs and details of the wooden boards in faraway water towers. The rear lens isn't as great with video. Its 1080p footage may capture bright orange trucks and yellow taxis, but playback is a little choppy and almost triggered a bout of nausea.Asus put a 4,680-mAh battery inside the ZenPad Z8. On our battery-life test (continuous web surfing at 150 nits of brightness) over the carrier's 4G LTE network, the tablet lasted 8:22. That beats the G Pad F 8.0's time on ATT's 4G network (7:11).When we ran the battery test over Wi-Fi, the Asus chugged along for 9 hours and 17 minutes, which is longer than the times of the Wi-Fi-only Predator 8 (5:36) and the average tablet (6:53).

The ZenPad Z8 is exclusive to Verizon, which sells the tablet for $249.99 off-contract, for $149.99 with a two-year contract and for $0 down and $10.41 per month for qualified customers. The tablet is offered only in the 16GB model we tested.Verizon offers monthly data plans that start at 2GB for $35 a month and top out at 24GB for $110 per month. The service provider also tacks on an additional $10-per-month connection fee plus taxes and other contractual fees. From its brilliant display and strong sound to its speedy processor and lightweight design, the Asus ZenPad Z8 is one great, pint-size tablet. Unfortunately, its user experience suffers from minor dings like slight pauses while switching apps and lackluster video-shooting.The Predator 8 may have a more vivid display and even louder audio, but it costs an additional $30. If you're looking for a small Android tablet, you need to check out the Asus ZenPad Z8.

Samsung’s gone and done it guys. It’s made a perfectly wonderful laptop that retails for under $US1000, is of exceptional quality, and is neither under-powered nor teeming with crappy finishes. This is the college-bound laptop everyone, including Apple, has failed to make for the last couple of years.AU Editor’s Note: The Notebook 7 Spin isn’t sold in Australia, unfortunately. But you can buy it internationally if you like the look of it, and have it shipped from a reseller like Amazon to your doorstep.
We’ve been busting Apple’s balls a lot lately, and it definitely has everything to do with my four-year-old Macbook Pro being on its last legs and my refusal to spend $2000-plus on the paltry-arse upgrade that is the current Macbook Pro. While other laptop companies furiously pack whiz-bang features and new ideas into a slab of aluminium and plastic, Apple’s been moseying along with a product so long in the tooth you might mistake it for an elderly relative who says inappropriate things at family gatherings.

Meanwhile, there is Samsung. Last year it had exactly one laptop in its line up. It was a great laptop, but it was hardly going to help the company take the computer business by storm. This year Samsung has been quietly rolling out a multitude of devices. It started with the brutally efficient Samsung 9, and now it’s back with the chunkier, and much more affordable, Samsung Notebook 7 Spin. The Notebook 7 Spin is the rare quality “do everything” laptop for under $US1000.Yeah, it’s bigger than the laptops we usually prefer here at Gizmodo — large enough that it feels clunky opening and closing and making use of the 360-degree hinge. And at 2kg for the 15-inch, it’s heavy enough to be used in your daily workout routine. Yet it’s also got a 1TB hard drive, space for a zippier M.2 SATA drive, a 15.6-inch 1080p display, USB and USB-C ports, and the 15-inch even has an Nvidia Geforce 940M video card — in case you need to get in some clutch play of the games in Overwatch. More importantly, it’s a lot more satisfying and easy to use that similarly priced laptops like the Dell Latitude 5000 series or HP Envy 15.

Samsung Finally Gave Us the Laptop Apple Should Have

This may sound shocking to a lot of you cheapskates, but it is actually very hard to find a really good Windows laptop for under a thousand dollars. There’s always a drawback. They’re all huge, and screens are washed out and ugly, or keyboards feel like your typing on marshmallows. The worst offender, though, is the trackpad. Budget laptops always have trackpads designed in the seventh pit of hell and put on this earth to destroy our will to compute. The Notebook 7 Spin has a remarkable trackpad. It’s every bit as intuitive and responsive as a MacBook trackpad — the gold standard. There are no misclicks. No accidental icon draggings. No “oops” right clicks when you meant to click left. The trackpad doesn’t feel buggy and the mouse doesn’t hop around the screen as if possessed. For a Windows machine it’s exceptional.

There are other little nods of quality that are unexpected in a laptop so cheap. The 45Wh battery in the 15-inch variant gave me a solid 6 hours of Nyan Cat streaming at full brightness, and the 13-inch version, which features the same battery and much less battery-consuming screen, should perform even better.
The Notebook 7 Spin also features “fast charging,” so in my testing it went from zero to 20 per cent battery in under twenty minutes, and it would be fully charged in less than two hours. I don’t know if I would characterise it as the fastest-charging laptop available, but it’s certainly in the upper echelons.

The ability to upgrade keeps it up there. The bottom of the laptop is covered in soft-touch plastic and held together by glaringly shiny screws. Remove the screws and you have instant access to the hard drive, M.2 SATA slot, and RAM slots. You can also peer at the latest generation i7 Skylake processor, if you really want to (the 13-inch comes with an i5). That means in addition to being cheap and powerful, it’s also user upgradable. This instantly tags another two years onto the lifespan of the computer.Samsung’s also included an Ethernet port. That’s usually the first port to get sacrificed to the thinness gods, especially in a world in which Wi-Fi is more or less a given just about everywhere you go. Its inclusion here is a deliberate move and not just a vestige of the wired times of yore. Thin laptops and super-light laptops are still a luxury in Samsung’s book, and Samsung is betting that most people would be happy to forgo that luxury to experience a laptop that can tackle any need that might arise.

Samsung Finally Gave Us the Laptop Apple Should Have

In other words, Samsung is trying to build a Swiss Army Laptop for everyone. So there’s an ethernet port for lugging this thing to college where the dank library basement or science lab might have spotty wireless. A USB-C port for the nerd who needs to run their 4K monitor, an HDMI port for streaming anime on a TV, and three regular USB ports for thumb drives, hard drives, and the charging of the countless USB-powered devices we’re all stuck with. There’s an SD card slot for the photographer too. There’s also a touchscreen for the dad who insists he needs one (whether he actually uses it or not), and there’s a 360-degree hinge because some people actually like to use their 15-inch laptop like a tablet, or prop it up so they can lie on their beds watching new episodes of Orange is the New Black.

HP EX940AA Notebook Battery

Despite being so thin, the Spectre does not compromise on performance like other competitors, which use a less-powerful but fanless Core M chip.Instead, this laptop has an ultrabook-class Intel Core i7 processor with 8GB of system memory and a 512GB solid-state drive.Performance is similar to that of other Core i7 ultrabooks, with the Spectre scoring 2,594 in PCMark 8 Home benchmark. For such a thin and light laptop, battery life (our test involves looping a video at full brightness and volume) was better than I expected at 6hr 20 min.Welcome to our hands-on review of Apple's new 12-inch MacBook for 2016. If you'd prefer to read about the original model, head over to our 2015 12-inch MacBook review. Our review is based on two models we've spent time with: the £1,299 model (1.2GHz m5 processor, 512GB of flash storage) in Rose Gold, and the £1,049 model (1.1GHz m3 processor, 256GB flash storage) in Space Grey.

Apple finds itself in a simultaneously difficult and enviable position in 2016. Having cast its spell over the laptop, the smartphone and the tablet, it has run out of things to revolutionise, things to invent. It seems that Apple is starting to plateau, in both creative and financial terms, but (perhaps unfairly) it must live up to its own hype every time it releases a product. Such as this amazing MacBook, an update to the original 12-inch MacBook unveiled in 2015.Much like the original MacBook Air caused outrage among tech hacks by having only one USB port (Apple later relented and added a second), so the 12-inch MacBook courted controversy by featuring a lone USB-C port which also serves as the power connector: the world promptly decided it wasn't ready for a single-port laptop with a slightly different keyboard. We feel this is the wrong way of looking at this laptop - in a simpler world it is one of the best laptops you can buy. But it isn't that simple, and it will be compared to not only the rest of the world's computers, but also the incredible track record of the company that has made it.

There's no intended niche audience for this product - it is a laptop for everyone, a computer in its purest form that surely will shape the future of the portable computer.
For a laptop that is marketed heavily as the future of computing, the price and specs are both slightly confusing and undeniably high. It's available in two base models, their differences as follows:
Perhaps the price jars because of the way consumer technology has fallen over the past 20 years. You may remember the days of the first family PC costing well over £1,000, but you can now pick up a Windows laptop with higher specs than the MacBook for around half its price. Then again, this high price buys you an incredible feat of laptop engineering that weighs about as much as a tablet, yet (despite Apple's iPad Pro marketing) can do a tad more.
We've been using the standard 1.1GHz model which has an Intel Core m3 processor. The 2015 MacBook's legacy has been, and will remain, that it wasn't very powerful. So far we have no complaints against the 2016 model in day-to-day use - it zips along very nicely for all your everyday computing needs. Geekbench 3 benchmark tests gave the MacBook a multi-core score of 5053. Compare this with the 2015 model's 4618 and the 2015 13in MacBook Air's 5821 and you get an idea of power.

There won't be any tech snobbery here, incidentally, against the idea of 'everyday computing', as though all tech journalists and specialists actually need and frequently use the power of the MacBook Pro they probably own. The 2016 MacBook, even in its lowest-spec model, is more than adequate for the needs of most - although video editors and gamers should look elsewhere. It's the first Apple MacBook to ship with Intel's latest generation of processor, 'Skylake'. Along with Intel's HD Graphics 515 card, the MacBook has faster performance and storage speeds across the board. It's fair to say that these aren't extremely noticeable in use compared to the 2015 model, but the laptop is agile and responsive. The standard 8GB of RAM helps, as does the flash storage - there are no moving parts in this laptop, and therefore no fan. It barely runs warm, even when put under a bit of pressure with multiple programmes running. A laptop that doesn't scald your lap is always a plus.

Our attractively grey (Space Grey, because space is grey) review model in particular has picked up many compliments on its short travels. (The Rose Gold model is more of an opinion divider.) There's no denying this is a beautiful product.

Instead, we are drawn to notice, and potentially criticise, the one sole port on this computer. (Bar the headphone port. First name on the team sheet.) It's USB-C, a relatively new standard of USB connection. The bundled charger connects to the port, which is also able to transfer data and act as a video output port. You'll need an adapter to do all three at once. But so what? If you know you'll want to attach several USB sticks to your computer every day, then you just won't consider this laptop - much like those who will want to connect an external monitor. The MacBook doesn't support Thunderbolt 3, so the best option for second screening is with an HDMI adaptor to connect to a compatible monitor.

But if you really think you'd want to connect this particular MacBook to an external monitor, why would you plump for a 12-inch screen laptop in the first place? A 15-inch MacBook Pro with a plethora of ports is surely your preferred machine, negating the need for an external display. The point here is that the design of this laptop should not be judged harshly by what it cannot do in relation to its price. This is to misunderstand its excellent combination of form and function.

Unfortunately, for the next couple of years, the one USB-C port thing is probably going to affect sales of this laptop. Given that Apple has gone with it again for the second generation, we think Apple is sticking with this strategy for the long haul - we'll have to wait and see what the next MacBook Pro brings. Some users will feel they might need to suddenly plug in two USB sticks and the SD card for that point-and-shoot camera that's lying about somewhere. The MacBook Air is now considered a design classic used by several generations of person, and indeed allows these plug-ins - but in 2008 it was actually laughed at by many for being overpriced and only having a single port. Sound familiar?

Here's one final point of potential interest: the USB-C ports on our test machines were both a very snug, very firm fit: we had to give them a good old yank to get the cable out. By which we don't mean that you'll ever be unable to get it out - just that, unless it loosens up significantly over time, it will never ever come out inadvertently. And while that sounds good, it does mean that tripping over the wire is going to bring the MacBook crashing down instead of pulling out the cable. We miss MagSafe.(If you miss MagSafe too, there are options. Griffin makes an accessory called BreakSafe - available from Amazon or Griffin itself - a USB-C power cable that incorporates a battery segment and will separate and unattach itself when placed under moderate pressure.)

12-inch MacBook (2016) review: Keyboard

Apple has made the travel of the MacBook's keys particularly shallow in order to squeeze the size of the chassis down, but it's not as far removed from other more traditional typing surfaces as reports might have you believe. It's not so much a compromise as a conscious design choice, just as the decision to buy this laptop is a choice of whether its design tweaks complement your computing needs. The company has made the keys larger than on its other keyboards yet amazingly has fit a full-size design on to a laptop that is a hair over 11 inches wide.

Typing on the 12-inch MacBook is okay, if a bit of an acquired taste. The reduced travel can make the keys less satisfying and, more importantly, less accurate to use. The sound of the keys, by the way, is very different to what we're used to with Apple laptops: not necessarily bad, just different. We quite like it, really - it's a cleaner tap than the slightly rattly, springy sound effect you get from the MacBook Pro's keys, for instance. But it's a shade louder than you might expect, and may become annoying for hypersensitive officemates. The keys are a good size but squeezed together more closely than on the Pro. And the reduced travel (and consequently keys that sit less proudly above the level) mean it's harder for your fingers to find their way round.

We generally mishit or entirely missed keys more often than on larger or deeper-travelled keyboards, but the most common error concerned the lefthand Shift key. We continuously missed this key and hit the key to its right instead. Indeed, all the keys down the lefthand edge are a little hit and miss. The issue appears related to the low-slung key profile. The keys sit very flat in their bay; whereas the keys on the MacBook Pro are about a millimetre proud of the baseline, these are half that. Having flat, low-travel keys is great for making a highly portable laptop, but it means the keys down the edge are at the same level as the bezel - a bezel so narrow, incidentally (roughly 1.5mm), that it's really just a ridge next to the keys. If your finger strikes one of the far-left keys on the left of the key, there's a good chance it'll strike the bezel ridge at the same time, muffling or entirely blocking the downward action of the key.

The more we used the 12-inch MacBook's keyboard, the more we grew used to its ways: we'll admit it feels different, but after a couple of hours of adjustment and typos, the words flow. Nevertheless, touch typing never reached quite the same level of speed, accuracy and all-round confidence we have with other Apple laptop keyboards. It's a bit of a 'looking down' keyboard, unfortunately.
Not only has Apple impressively included a full-size keyboard in what is the ultimate portable form, but also has managed to fit a well-sized trackpad. Much like the 2015 model, it is a Force Touch trackpad that doesn't physically click, it just gives this impression: Apple created a space-saving mechanism that uses electrical pulses to trick your brain into feeling a click. Press a little harder and you get a deep click, similar to 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

HP EliteBook 2540p Notebook Battery

Then more recently, Microsoft jumped into the fray and said that its new Edge browser offers even more benefits where battery life is concerned. A video posted alongside its claims showed Edge outperforming Opera, Chrome and Firefox in battery longevity tests.Needless to say, Opera wasn't going to take Microsoft's claims sitting down. And new the company is back with a new blog post explaining that Opera does indeed offer better battery life than Microsoft's Edge browser.Opera explained that it didn't even include Edge in its earlier comparisons because the browser is only available on Windows 10. Following Microsoft's new claims though, the company decided to respond.Like most other engineering teams, we love it when someone picks a fight, Opera's Błażej Kaźmierczak wrote in a blog post. If we get beaten in a test like this, we consider it a bug.

He continued, our first step was to see if it actually is the case that 'Edge gives longer battery time than Opera'? As Microsoft hasn’t revealed its full methodology, we were unable to run the same tests. The methodology we applied instead was exactly the same as we provided before: browsing a set of popular websites where the automation simulates interaction with the website, making it close to what we expect normal browsing would be on such page.Just a few days back we unboxed the Notion’s latest 2-in-1 Windows laptop. The laptop was launched a couple of weeks back. For those who are not familiar with Notion Ink, it is an Indian Startup which focuses mainly on budget friendly Windows tablets and 2-in-1 devices. The latest 2-in-1 device comes with a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Under the hood sits the Intel Cherrytrail processor clocked at 1.4 Ghz with 4 GB DDR 3 RAM (800 Mhz). It comes with 64 GB inbuilt storage which can be expanded to 128 GB via microSD card. The device also sports 2-MP front and rear camera. To power up the hardware, Notion Ink comes with an 8100 mAh non-removable battery.

As far as the device is concerned, it looks pretty decent on paper but the real question is, does the device live up to its expectations in real life situations. Head down as we find the answer to the question.
The device comes with a solid aluminium finish which feels good and comfortable while using. The device comes with a 10.1 inch IPS display with 180-degree viewing angles. The screen is a 10 point multi-touch capacitive display. On the top middle of the screen sits the 2 MP front facing camera which performs a decent job under good lightening conditions. On the back is the 2 MP rear camera in the top middle with Notion Ink branding in the center. On the left side of the device are all the ports. Notion Ink Able comes with a microSD card slot, SIM Card slot, 1 USB 3.o port, 1 USB 2.0 port and a micro USB port for charging. It also supports a micro HDMI port and comes with a headphone jack. On the top of the device is the power button with volume rockers. On the right side of the device are the speakers. The device also has a capacitive Windows button at the bottom for accessing Start Menu quickly.

Notion Ink Able had 10.1-inch display which gave a great feedback under both artificial as well as natural lighting conditions. Although it was a bit difficult to use the device under direct sunlight but overall the display is good considering the laptop being a budget one. Coming to the touch, the response is good. It sometimes lags but works accurately most of the times. I tried using touch-based apps like Bamboo paper and the response was good. However, it doesn’t have palm rejection feature which comes handy while using these apps.
Notion Ink Able comes with Windows 10 out of the box and with Anniversary update around the corner, one can expect better features and compatibility in the near future. With the anniversary update, the device will support Windows Ink feature and other new improvements to the Windows 10 OS.

Moving to the performance of the device, it does perform well under normal conditions but starts to cause problems if you open and switch between multiple apps. The device gave good results with the copying speeds and also worked well with the basic apps like Microsoft Office, Browsers, and video players. Although it caused some delay while using software like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Premier Pro. On the bottom line, the device is best suited for the business consumers or those who want a device to use basic apps. It is definitely not suitable for people who need to run multiple software at the same time or want to play games.
The Notion Ink Able comes with 2 MP front and rear camera for video calling as well as for capturing pictures. Although the camera is not very good, but it performs decent in normal lighting but fails if there is not much light in the room. The front camera is good for video calling. The device comes installed with Windows Camera so you can take benefit of it to capture good photos by tweaking manual settings. Overall the camera does a decent job but it is not good to be used as a primary camera.

Battery life plays a very important role for business users as well as for work oriented people. The battery on the Notion Ink was good enough to last about 5 hrs on normal use which included browsing the internet and watching some videos. Although it can last more if you turn on battery saver while using the laptop. Also decreasing the brightness of the screen can be helpful. Overall the battery life we got was pretty good.
Notion Ink Able comes with multiple connection options. The Laptop has all the ports to the left side of the device which includes the microSD card, SIM Card, USB 3.0, Micro USB, USB 2.0, HDMI and headphone jack. The device does give great copying speeds from the external devices. The device also features a microSD card slot which gives the user a chance to expand storage up to 128 GB. It also comes with an HDMI port so that you can easily connect the laptop to any projector or secondary display.

One of the unique features about Notion Ink Able is it supports 3G SIM for additional data connectivity. This basically means that you can use your normal SIM Card to use the internet in the same was as you do on the mobile. The laptop accepts a Micro-SIM which is not hard to find today and you need an active data connection on the SIM card to use the internet. The overall experience is good and you will hardly notice the fact that you are using a SIM card and not a WiFi. Do note that data speeds will depend on the connection type you have and not on the laptop.
The Notion Ink Able is one of the best devices out there in sub 25,000 if you are a business customer or a person who wants a laptop for casual work/entertainment. The laptop did perform well in different tests but it is definitely not for someone who expects a lot from a laptop. It is not a powerful laptop so don’t expect much of gaming kind of stuff from it. Although it can easily fulfill the needs of a normal user who wants it just for using Office apps or maybe surfing the internet and watching movies or videos. It is suitable for business users as they can have a good laptop with a decent battery backup without shelling out too much cash. Overall we recommend the laptop for casual as well as for business users.

With the Spectre, HP has crafted a stunning, luxury ultrabook that also happens to be the thinnest notebook in the world. It measures just 10.4mm thick. To put this in context: the original Apple iPad from 2010 was 13mm thick. So is the latest 12-inch Apple MacBook.HP achieves this ultra-thin design by moving the hinges to the rear and splitting the internal battery into four separate parts. This lets HP better fit the batteries to minimise the thickness. The Spectre's aluminium and carbon fibre chassis feels surprisingly strong and rigid. The rear of the laptop is finished in copper, which imbues it with a premium feel. But the copper finish is a magnet for fingerprint smudges.

Because its sides are too thin, the Spectre's three USB ports (the slim Type-C version) are located at the rear, along with the audio jack. All three USB Type-C ports can be used for charging.Users will need adapters to connect the Spectre to an external monitor or full-size USB devices.I am very impressed by the amount of key travel on the island-style keyboard. It is much nicer to type on, compared with some ultrabooks, and there is a handy backlight, too. However, the wide but short touchpad is not at all convenient for two-fingered scrolling of documents and Web pages.Like most ultra-thin laptops, the Spectre's sleek body has its drawbacks. Chief among them: the bottom of the laptop gets uncomfortably warm. You definitely want a bag or a cushion as a buffer between the Spectre and your lap.

Unusually for a premium laptop, the Spectre lacks a touchscreen. But this makes sense: a touchscreen would be thicker and heavier than a normal display. The screen resolution is surprisingly mundane at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Last year's HP Spectre x360 came with a 2,560 x 1,440-pixel display. I assume HP chose a lower- resolution screen because it consumes less power. In any case, I was never a fan of ultra-high-resolution screens in 13-inch laptops. Besides, the Spectre's glossy display looks great. It is bright and vivid with wide viewing angles. The only blemish: the bezel is relatively thick compared with some of the latest ultrabooks. You will find the Bang Olufsen branding etched at the corner below the keyboard, but don't get your hopes up. The speakers on the left and right of the Spectre's keyboard sound like the ones on most other ultrabooks - treble-heavy with little punch. And not loud enough for my liking.

HP Mini 1000 Notebook Battery

Because the Latitude 13 7370 has a solid state drive, Dell can keep the chassis down to a pleasingly portable size. Add to that a space-saving Intel Core M5-6Y57 processor, and we are looking at a seriously compact laptop given its business-orientated functionality. When open, it only measures 14.32 x 304.8 x 210.5 mm and weighs just 1.12kg.

As with the rest of its Latitude series, Dell leans on the security benefits of this laptop. Features such as Dell’s ControlVault, which allows for the processing and storage of your sensitive data, are present. A fleet of 7370s might be advisable if you’re looking to buy for enterprise or even for a small business. But the benefits of the hardware, such as the built-in fingerprint scanner, will appeal to individuals and the self-employed as well as those at Fortune 500 companies.

You won’t be embarrassed getting this laptop out on the train, and nor frankly will you really notice it in your backpack - a win win situation.

Even though the Latitude 13 7370 has a diminutive body, Dell has packed in an SD card reader, USB 3.0 port, lock slot, two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, micro HDMI slot and room for two optional micro SIM card slots. This is excellent for a laptop of this smaller physical size.
The inclusion of Thunderbolt 3, Intel’s USB-C standard, is good to see and shows that the computing (and smartphone) indsutry is moving to adopt it over USB-A or micro-USB. Thunderbolt 3 allows for charging, data transfer, dock and display connection and charging of portable devices all through the same port. Versatility alongside universality in the coming years will ensure USB-C becomes the standard connection for the majority of laptops.

The keyboard of the Latitude 13 7370 is the biggest difference between it and consumer laptops like Dell’s XPS 13 and, more broadly, MacBooks and other competitors. It is the one give away that this a business laptop, with the traditionally more accented, raised keys. It’s a full size keyboard but somehow feels slightly cramped, though this is probably down to the admittedly small form factor. Dell has included all the Fn (function) keys you’d expect and the keyboard is backlit too but with only two brightness settings, as well as off.

We took a little while to warm to the keyboard having been used to a full desktop keyboard, but if you are used to this style of slightly concave, clicky key, then it won’t a problem. However, if you’re thinking of buying it’s always advisable to try one out before you spend.
The trackpad on the 7370 is good, but we’d like to have seen a larger mechanical one rather than the traditional two physical left and right click buttons underneath it. We appreciate this decision is likely to cater for business users used to this setup, but it means that the trackpad is a tad too small. You’ll probably want to fiddle with the sensitivity settings of both the mouse and the scroll speed before you’re comfortable using it. Of course, you can always use an external mouse. Here’s our roundup of the best PC mice.

The screen is a non-touch 13.3in FHD (1920 x 1080 resolution). Colours look great and text crisp, but we found we wanted the brightness cranked right up in order to fully appreciate it. Turned down the screen has a not-too-off-putting grey tint, but a gloomy feel nonetheless. Viewing angles are excellent, and Dell claims the screen is anti-glare, but it’s no different to the majority of other machines - in direct sunlight you’ll find it hard to use.

As mentioned before though, the FHD resolution here is accentuated by the design of the screen, and the fact there’s hardly any bezel. It probably isn’t that impressive on its own, but the combination here of form and function is excellent, and Dell should be praised for that, particularly in a laptop market where Apple usually wins all the design plaudits. It’s all the more impressive here that Dell has managed it on what remains a business computer.

The Latitude 13 7000 series all ship with Windows 7 Professional, with the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10 Professional. Our review unit ran the latter, and we found this preferable - though we acknowledge that we’re used to Windows 10 by now. Business users who may still be using Windows 7 (many companies still enforce it) might prefer that option.

The Core M5 processor more than coped with multi-tasking through Windows 10 when we were using the computer for a full day of work. Core M has a somewhat unfair reputation in some circles given that, spec-wise, it is not as powerful as the Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors. The advantages of M though are silent running, the possibility of better battery life and a smaller form factor alongside the adoption of USB-C. The Latitude 13 7370 runs buttery smooth with this set up and we ran some benchmarks to show you in the section below.

Dell doesn’t quote the expected battery life in hours, preferring in its marketing to promise ‘excellent standard battery life’. This is not grammatically correct, but rest assured the sentiment is - the 7370 has truly outstanding battery life. In initial set up, we noticed that the standby time is amazing. Close the lid for hours on end and when you open it up, not only does it spring to life but the battery is barely depleted - we’re talking about a 1% drop after we left it for a day.

This is down to the low-power needs of the Core M5. With no moving parts and improved performance, the chip allows not only smooth and reliable performance but also this good battery retention. It does of course go down under use, but if you are taking the 7370 between meetings all day, we’d be confident in saying you won’t need to take your charger with you. Just remember that you can’t borrow someone else’s if you run low though, because chances are not everyone will have a spare USB-C charger - give it a year or two.

It’s a business laptop, there’s no escaping that. But our time with the Dell Latitude 13 7370 was great - it’s probably the most accessible business laptop out there, with a form factor that everyone can get along with. If you are a small business owner and you need a laptop to hook up to a monitor in your home office but also take on a business trip and not need a plug all day, then this is one of the computers you should be considering. You might not even need or want another laptop for personal use either, which goes a long way to justifying the high price.

If you've bought an HP or Compaq laptop in the last three years, its battery could be a fire risk. HP has confirmed that batteries supplied over this period have 'the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers'. Owners of affected ProBook, Envy, Presario, Pavilion Notebook and other HP and Compaq models have been strongly encouraged to stop using their laptops immediately. If you bought an HP or Compaq laptop between March 2013 and August 2015 you could be at risk. Keep reading to find out whether your laptop is on the danger list and how to claim your replacement battery. You can see how HP ranked in our computer reliability survey and which manufacturers you can trust in our guide to the best laptop brands. Is my HP laptop affected? The key to finding out whether your laptop is at risk is to check the bar code on the battery itself. Before doing so, turn off your laptop and disconnect it from the mains. Then slide open the battery release on the bottom of the laptop and remove the battery. If the bar code starts with any of the below combinations, then there's a chance you may be affected. What should I do next? If your battery is on the list, then you should head to the HP website to confirm whether your laptop is afflicted with the overheating problem – HP estimates that less than 1% of all its PCs sold in the above time period are affected. From there, you can double check that your particular model is in danger and then go through the validation process to claim your free replacement battery. Once validated, HP will send out the new battery. In the meantime, HP says that you can continue to use your laptop without the battery installed, by connecting the laptop to the mains. How does Which? test laptops? We review more than 100 laptops every year – including models from the likes of HP, Lenovo, Asus and Apple MacBooks – to make sure that you know which ones you can rely on for computing excellence. As well as telling you which have screens that dazzle and those that have cheap-feeling, unresponsive keyboards and trackpads, our test labs go to depths that other reviewers can't. Only Which? carries out full battery tests to see exactly how long you'll be able to use your laptop before scrabbling around for the nearest mains point, and we measure their processing power using real life scenarios such as timing how long they take to start up and transfer data.

Modern laptops have now arrived at a point where pretty much anything you purchase is going to offer enough power to handle web browsing, media streaming and basic work without any problems — unless it's really a budget machine. Modern processors and graphics chips are nice and powerful, and most software from big-name developers is pretty well-optimized. With that in mind, battery life becomes an increasingly important piece of the puzzle when people are choosing a new laptop. What you might not realize, however, is that battery performance is about much more than just hardware. There's a new type of web browser war going on right now, and the end result is nothing but big benefits for you, the end user. It started with Opera making the bold claim that by switching to its browser of the same name on your laptop would increase your battery life by a whopping 50%. That's a bold claim, and testing from independent sources found that the Opera browser did indeed have a big impact on battery life.

HP COMPAQ nx9420 Notebook Battery

MSI and SteelSeries continue to make touch-typists happy with their full-size, island-style keyboard with customizable backlighting. The generously spaced keys have 1.6 millimeters of key travel and require 62 grams of force to depress, making for firm, bouncy feedback. I easily hit my 60 words-per-minute average on the 10FastFingers typing test.
Despite using a SteelSeries keyboard, I was surprised to see the laptop outfitted with MSI's old KLM software for the backlighting. Depending on which of the seven modes I chose, I was restricted to a limited color palette. By contrast, the SteelSeries Engine app lets me paint with a brush of 16.8 million colors. KLM also lacks the ability to create macros, which isn't absolutely necessary since this isn't a gaming laptop, but I'd still like to map a shortcut or two. One thing that hasn't changed is how bright the lighting is in a dimly lit room. My hands were drawn to the glowing keyboard like a moth to a flame.

The 4.4 x 2.5-inch Synaptics touchpad like the rest of the laptop is quite large. My fingers skated across the warm surface, performing two-finger scroll and three-finger press, eliciting quick and accurate responses. The pair of discrete mouse buttons offer strong feedback delivered with an audible click.Ready to design the metropolis of the future in CAD? The WT72's Nvidia Quadro M5500 GPU with 8GB of video memory can get the job done. The powerhouse netted 133,766 on the synthetic 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark, topping the 120,204 desktop-replacement average. The ZBook and the Precision 5510 with their Nvidia Quadro M1000M GPUs weren't too far off at 117,745 and 117,636, respectively. However, the ThinkPad P70 and its Nvidia Quadro M4000M GPU delivered a whopping 144,030.

Although the WT72 wasn't meant to be a gaming rig, we couldn't resist running Metro: Last Light, our most taxing graphics test. At its native resolution (3840 x 2160) on low, the workstation notched 81 frames per second, easily beating the 51 fps average. The ThinkPad P70 was a distant second at 45 fps, while the Precision 5510 and the ZBook were in a dead heat at 21 fps. When I ran the SteamVR Performance Test, the laptop fell into the lower end of the ready spectrum. That means the system can run high-quality VR without encountering the stuttering or lag that could induce simulation sickness.Equipped with a 2.9-GHz Intel Core i7-6920HQ processor with 32GB of RAM, the MSI WT72 6QN blows away mainstream laptops but doesn't offer the most power in its class. The laptop easily streamed an episode of Black Mirror on Netflix with a full system scan and 10 additional Google Chrome tabs in the background.

On Geekbench 3, which measures overall performance, the system notched 13,928, passing the 13,255 average. The MacBook Pro and its 2.5-GHz Intel Core i7-4870HQ CPU hit 14,423. Outfitted with 2.8-GHz Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 CPUs, the Precision 5510, the ZBook and the ThinkPad P70 notched 14,316, 14,276 and 13,158, respectively.Despite having a pair of 128GB PCIe SSDs in MSI's SuperRAID 4 and a 1TB, 7,200-rpm hard drive, the WT72 copies files more slowly than its competitors. The laptop duplicated 4.97GB of mixed-media files in 40 seconds for a transfer rate of 125.7 megabytes per second. That's well below the 513.4 MBps desktop-replacement average. The ZBook and ThinkPad P70's 512GB PCie SSDs notched 508.9MBps and 848.2MBps, while the Precision 5510 and the MacBook Pro (powered by 512GB SSDs) hit 565MBps and 636MBps.On the OpenOffice Spreadsheet Macro test, the WT72 matched 20,000 names and addresses in 3 minutes and 33 seconds, beating the 3:41 category average, the Precision 5510 (3:40) and the MacBook Pro (4:14). The ThinkPad P70 and the ZBook tied at a faster 3:23.

I don't imagine anyone grappling with the WT72's elephantine frame once it has been positioned on a desk, which is just as well since the laptop needs to be near an outlet at all times. The workstation lasted for only 3 hours and 16 minutes on our battery test (continuous web-surfing over Wi-Fi), which is an hour below the 4:16 desktop-replacement average. The ZBook took much longer to tap out at 5:08, while the Precision 5510 and the ThinkPad P70 clocked times of 5:34 and 5:53, respectively. Not surprisingly, the MacBook Pro was the last laptop, running at 9:08.Despite the wicked-looking vents along the WT72's undercarriage and rear, the laptop can get a tad hot. The touchpad and the space between the G and H keys measured 83 and 94 degrees Fahrenheit after playing a full-screen Hulu video. Both temperatures were below our 95-degree comfort threshold. The notebook's bottom hit a hot 106 degrees, but since you'd rarely if ever use this behemoth in your lap, your family jewels should be safe.

The 1080p integrated webcam accurately captured the color of my persimmon-colored dress, but everything else was off. The bright yellow stripes in my colleague's blue-and-green plaid shirt were nearly invisible and my hair looked more red than purple. The test shots were very fuzzy, missing details like the small gap in the band of my headphones. To further cement its workstation cred, MSI preinstalled a few apps to help in your multimedia creation goals. For instance, there are trial versions of Magix Photo Manager 15 and Magix Music Maker Silver, which lets you make simple edits to your favorite shots and create your own original music by cobbling together the provided samples.MSI-branded software includes True Color, which lets you change the display's color temperature, and Shortcut Manager, which lets you map programs to hotkeys for a one-button solution. Battery Calibration keeps your battery running at optimal performance, whereas System Control Manager lets you quickly access settings for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Brightness and Volume.

The MSI WT72 6QN has a three-year warranty on parts and labor. See how MSI fared on our best and worst laptop brands ratings and tech support showdown. The WT72 is plenty pricey, so gird your wallets for battle. I reviewed the $4,999 iteration of the laptop, which has a 2.9-GHz Intel Core i7-6920HQ processor; 32GB of RAM; a pair of 128GB PCIe SSDs in a SuperRAID configuration with a 1TB, 7,200-rpm hard drive; an Nvidia Quadro M5500 GPU with 8GB of video memory; and a 4K (3840 x 2160) display. If you don't need the ultra-high-res panel, you can go for the 1080p version, which costs $4,599.

The base model is a much more affordable $1,899 and features a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU; 16GB of RAM; a 128GB M.2 SSD with a 1TB, 7,200-rpm hard drive; a Nvida Quadro M1000M GPU with 2GB of VRAM; and a 1080p display. While other gaming laptop manufacturers fall into a steady groove with their products, MSI is never afraid to push boundaries. As the first VR-capable workstation, the WT72 is a testament to the company's innovative instincts. For $4,999, game designers, architects and other creative professionals flush with cash can build their own VR worlds, thanks to a system sporting a powerful Intel Core i7 CPU and a Nvidia Quadro 5500M GPU. And when it's done, they can marvel at their work on the stunning 4K display.

However, $4,999 is a lot to ask for any laptop, even one as mighty as the WT72. For $3,477, you can get the Lenovo ThinkPad P70, which offers a brighter, more vivid display, more processing power and better battery life. However, you're losing the ability to run VR applications on an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. If you're a creative professional seeking a portable solution that can both run and create VR apps, the MSI WT72 is the laptop for you.The first thing we noticed when unboxing Dell’s Latitude 13 7370 was the screen. The premium business laptop boasts a great looking edge-to-edge display, fitting 13in of it into a portable, tidy body akin to many 12in laptops.

The 7370 takes its design hints from the company’s excellent, consumer focussed XPS 13, but it is definitely more business focussed, both in design and features. Here’s our Dell Latitude 13 7370 review.

As with many Dell products, you can customise the Latitude 7370 to suit your needs at point of purchase. The Latitude 13 7000 series, of which it is a part, starts from £1,079. Our review model had a 256GB hard drive as opposed to the standard 128GB, which means it retails for £1,159 (current offer price). This is a lot of money for one machine, whether you are buying for yourself or for a business, so let’s take a closer look at what that money actually gets you and whether the spend is worth it.

The Latitude 13 7370 differs from other Dells like the Latitude 12 7000 series or the Dell Latitude 14 7000 series simply because it is better looking. All three lines are referred to as ultrabooks, but this really feels like one. As soon as you add the InfinityEdge edge-to-edge screen to the machine it immediately looks sleeker and more of a premium product.
The good looks of the laptop extend to the rest of the machine, apart from, debatably, the keyboard. More on that further into our review.

The 7370 has a pleasant matt finish to its base half, but the outer side of the lid is a cool (in both senses of the word) aluminium that again adds to the feel, but is also surprisingly sturdy. It’s also available with a carbon-fiber cover, for just £10 more at point of sale. There’s barely any give in the lid or the base and the detailing really makes a difference, right down to the silver rim that runs around the edges of the top half. The black matt finish on the bottom of the unit does pick up fingerprints, but unless you have a fully metallic laptop, this is inescapable.

HP 535753-001 Notebook Battery

Like Daydream is an upgrade for Cardboard, Google Assistant is an upgrade for Google Now: a more friendly, more personal, chatbot-powered AI that can answer your questions, book dinner reservations, play games and suggest smart replies to send your friends when you don't have the time or the energy to actually compose a proper message. It looks set to spread across all of Google's apps and services. One place where the Google Assistant is definitely going to appear is in the dinky Google Home device - essentially Google's own version of the Amazon Echo (and Google chief Sundar Pichai even gave a shout out to Amazon on stage). It can answer your queries via the web, play music, control various smart home devices (including Nest) and it's coming out sometime in the autumn of 2016.

We'll also see Google Assistant in the company's brand new messaging app: Allo. Did Google need a new messaging app? Perhaps not, but Allo has chatbot-style AI capabilities, some nice stickers, and the ability to quickly change the font size with a slide of your finger. It looks a lot like this is going to be Google's answer to Apple's iMessage, and it links to your mobile number too.Just for fun, Google launched yet another messaging app at I/O, this time for one-to-one video calls (yes, it's Google's FaceTime). It's called Duo and one of its neatest features is the ability to see a video feed of who's calling before you answer. Like Allo, Duo is going to be available in the summer for Android and iOS. Where does this leave Hangouts? To be honest, we're not exactly sure.

Google's smartwatch platform is getting a major update - like Android N and almost everything else announced at I/O, it's coming in the autumn. The update will enable Android Wear apps to run completely independently of a connected smartphone, plus there are three input upgrades - smart replies, handwriting recognition and a small, swipeable keyboard for your wrist. What's more, your smartwatch will be able to identify exercise activities automatically. We already knew a lot about Android N, but there were some new features announced at I/O: background updates, for example, so Android will eventually update automatically in the same way the Chrome browser does. There's also going to be a quicker way of switching between apps, as well as a bigger range of emoji characters - which we know was something a lot of you were waiting for.

Also coming at some point later this year are Android Instant Apps - segments of apps that are temporarily installed on your phone. So, you can jump into a shopping app to buy an item, for example, or an app made by a particular venue or event without having to go through the trouble of installing the whole app and then uninstalling it five months later, never having used it again.Android Auto is slowly but surely getting better and more widely used, and Google announced some small upgrades at I/O this year. The Google-owned Waze app is going to be built into Android Auto, and there's going to be support for Wi-Fi connections as well as wired ones too. What's more, you'll be able to access Android Auto on your phone, without needing a compatible car headset as well.

Google's Dave Burke admitted that the company is having trouble naming Android N - and so everyone is invited to offer ideas via android.com/n. Before you get too excited, there's not going to be an official poll - Google's decision is still final - but there's a chance that your idea might be the one that's picked. Think dessert names and see where your imagination takes you... you've got until 8 June to make a suggestion.Tablets and laptops with Intel's 7th Generation Core chips code-named Kaby Lake should become available in the coming months.Intel is shipping Kaby Lake chips to PC makers now, CEO Brian Krzanich during Intel's earnings call Wednesday. Systems with new processors usually become available a few months after Intel delivers the chips.

Kaby Lake will succeed current Core processors named Skylake. The new chip has the underpinnings of Skylake and won't necessarily be smaller in size, but it'll provide speed improvements over its predecessor, Krzanich said. That raises a question: should you wait a few months for Kaby Lake instead of upgrading to a Skylake PC now? Experts generally say you should buy a PC as and when you need it rather than wait for the next improvement to come along.Nevertheless, Kaby Lake PCs should come in some interesting shapes and sizes. Intel usually first releases Core M versions of a new processor first, suggesting some innovative mobile designs.Skylake was originally to be followed by Canonlake, a 10 nanometer shrink of Skylake. But last year Intel pushed out its 10 nanometer plans and introduced Kaby Lake as an interim product, with some design tweaks to boost performance.

At Computex last month, Asus showed Transformer 3, which resembles Microsoft's Surface Pro tablet and runs on Kaby Lake. It has a 12.6-inch screen, weighs 695 grams and is 6.9 millimeters thick. It can be configured with a 512GB SSD and up to 8GB RAM. Asus said it would be priced starting at $799.No other major PC maker has announced a Kaby Lake PC yet. Lenovo and Acer are holding PC-related press conferences ahead of the IFA trade show in Berlin in early September. Kaby Lake PCs could also be shown at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco next month.Intel has said 400 devices with Kaby Lake will ultimately become available. Microsoft's Surface PCs and Apple's MacBooks could also get Kaby Lake chips.

Competition to Kaby Lake will come from AMD's chips code-named Bristol Ridge, which reached a handful of PCs earlier this year. AMD's chips excel at graphics, while Intel chips are better at preserving laptop battery.Intel in April said it would reshape its business to focus less on PCs and more on data center products, internet of things and connectivity. The PC market has been slumping for years and has hurt Intel's profits.Krzanich expects the PC upgrade cycle to pick up in the second half this year, mainly in enterprises. Demand for PCs was slightly better in the second quarter, but should continue to decline in the high single-digit range for the rest of the year, he said.Sure, your workstation can run CAD programs, but can it create and test VR applications? MSI continues to break boundaries, launching the WT72 6QN, the first workstation capable of supporting the resource-taxing Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets. When you're not designing or exploring virtual spaces, the laptop delivers good overall performance with a lovely 4K display. However, the $4,999 price of the MSI WT72 6QN may give pause to all but the most deep-pocketed engineers and designers.

The WT72 looks pretty bad-ass for a workstation, and that's because it uses the same frame as the company's GT72 Dominator line of gaming notebooks, albeit with one distinctive change. Instead of the red-and-white backlit dragon emblem, the WT72's brushed-black aluminum lid is adorned with a gleaming MSI emblem set above a green-and-black workstation sigil.MSI WT72 6QNThe majority of the laptop's interior is made of black aluminum with the exception of the semiglass palm rest. A large speaker grill resides at the top of the deck above the backlit keyboard. Buttons for power, GPU, fan speed, KLM backlighting software and a programmed shortcut sit to the left of keyboard. Along the laptop's front lip are two LED strips that can also be customized.

You want ports? The WT72 has them in spades. Starting on the right, you have a pair of USB 3.0 ports and a Blu-Ray burner. You'll find four USB 3.0 ports with jacks for headphones, microphone, S/PDIF and an amp and a SD card reader. In the rear is a Thunderbolt 3 port, HDMI, a mini DisplayPort and the power jack. That means that this monster can support up to four monitors or a VR headset if you're so inclined.
The WT72 might be one of the most powerful workstations in the land, but at 8.6 pounds, the 16.9 x 11.6 x 1.9-inch behemoth is most certainly the chunkiest. The 16.4 x 10.8 x 1.2-inch Lenovo ThinkPad P70 is a full pound lighter.Whether you're watching movies or creating them, the WT72's 3840 x 2160 display is a sight to behold.

The Dell Precision 5510 (14.1 x 9.3 x 0.66 inches) and HP ZBook Studio G3 (14.8 x 10 x 0.71 inches), both of which have 15-inch screens, weigh 4.6 pounds, while the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display measures 4.5 pounds, 14.1 x 9.7 x 0.71 inches.

Whether you're watching movies or creating them, the WT72's 3840 x 2160 display is a sight to behold. Actor Byung-hun Lee stood larger than life against a pale, blue sky and a field of green at his back in the 1080p trailer of The Magnificent Seven. Details were sharp enough that I could see the individual jet-black hairs in his mustache as well as the fine stripes in his shirt.
The matte panel can reproduce 173 percent of the sRGB color gamut, topping the 129 percent desktop-replacement average. The ZBook wasn't too far behind at 169 percent, while the ThinkPad P70 hit 158 percent. However, the Precision 5500 got the win at 177 percent. The MacBook Pro delivered a disappointing 86 percent.

The WT72's vividness is matched only by its accuracy. When tested, the display registered 0.87 on the Delta-E test (0 is ideal), besting the 1.3 category average. The MacBook Pro, ZBook and Precision 5500 posted 2.1, 2.4 and 2.6, respectively. But the ThinkPad P70 proved the most accurate at 0.7. When measured for brightness, the WT72 averaged a glimmering 305 nits, easily outshining the 291-nit average, but not the Precision's dazzling 322 nits. The WT72 fared better against the MacBook Pro, the ThinkPad P70 and the ZBook, which produced 303, 277 and 241 nits each. Thanks to the pair of Dynaudio speakers, the WT72's bark is as big as its bite. Paired with a bottom-mounted subwoofer, the top-firing speakers filled my small test space with loud, mostly clear music. Listening to Chance the Rapper's "Angels," I got a nice thump of bass paired with a playful steel drum and the artist's singsong-y vocal. The background vocals sounded slightly distorted, which was a bit off-putting.
