Their availability comes just ahead of Canonical's anticipated release of Ubuntu 16.04LTS release, due next month. Dell plans to support this latest Linux initially as an upgrade but there’s no date, yet, for support as a factory installation. The Precision family, meanwhile, consists of three workstations – the 5510, 3510 and 7510. This being Dell, you pick Ubuntu at the customize and buy stage of ordering via its website.Global availability comes four years after Dell began work on the Ubuntu machines under the Project Sputnik name, as a project exploring the ideal developer laptop.Work on Project Sputnik began in 2012 after it was pitched to a Dell internal innovation fund by George, who gained just $40,000 of funding. George has a background of engagement with open source communities and developers on behalf of big tech firms. The project went public in May 2012, with a public beta and first XPS being released in autumn that year. However, Lenovo posted the strongest shipment growth, up 8.2% from the fourth quarter in 2011, while HP was flat and Dell slid 21%.Across Europe, HP had a much stronger lead over Lenovo, with a 19% market share over its Chinese rival's 11%. However, HP's shipments were down 8.3%, and Lenovo was the only PC firm to post growth in Europe, with a whopping 29% leap.

The end of the year is a key sales period for PC makers, but the fourth quarter of 2012 saw overall shipments slide even further, down 4.6% globally and 9.6% in Europe.Shortly after the American College of Education (ACE) in Indiana fired IT administrator Triano Williams in April, 2016, it found that it no longer had any employees with admin access to the Google email service used by the school. In a lawsuit [PDF] filed against Williams in July, 2016, the school alleges that it asked Williams to return his work laptop, which was supposed to have the password saved. But when Williams did so in May that year, the complaint says, the computer was returned wiped, with a new operating system, and damaged to the point it could no longer be used.ACE claimed that its students could not access their Google-hosted ACE email accounts or their online coursework. The school appealed to Google, but Google at the time refused to help because the ACE administrator account had been linked to William's personal email address.

By setting up the administrator account under a non-ACE work email address, Mr Williams violated ACE's standard protocol with respect to administrator accounts, the school's complaint states. ACE was unaware that Mr Williams' administrator account was not linked to his work address until after his employment ended.According to the school's court filing, Williams, through his attorney, said he would help the school reinstate its Google administrator account, provided the school paid $200,000 to settle his dispute over the termination of his employment. That amount is less than half the estimated $500,000 in harm the school says it has suffered due to its inability to access its Google account, according to a letter from William's attorney in Illinois, Calvita J Frederick.Frederick's letter claims that another employee set up the Google account and made Williams an administrator, but not the controlling administrator. It says the school locked itself out of the admin account through too many failed password attempts.Williams, in a counter-suit [PDF] filed last month, claims his termination followed from a pattern of unlawful discrimination by the school in the wake of a change in management. In a phone interview with The Register, Frederick said she filed a federal lawsuit in Illinois against the school, which has yet to respond. We would hope that the [school's] action in Indianapolis would be viewed as retaliation, which we believe it was, and that judgement would be vacated and we would prevail in the discrimination claim.

Pointing to the complaint she filed with the court in Illinois, Frederick said Williams wrote a letter [PDF] to a supervisor complaining about the poor race relations at the school and, as a result of that letter, he was told he had to relocate to Indianapolis. That's how the whole thing started, she said. His working remotely has always been a condition of his employment. The school, she said, knew he could not do that because of parental obligations requiring him to remain in Illinois.Frederick said the school has been subject to several discrimination claims over the past two years. It's a sad situation, she said. The complaint filed by Williams alleges he, as an African American, was paid less than workers of other racial or ethnic backgrounds.Rather than support Williams in his position of IT Systems Administrator, Defendants intentionally discriminated against Williams by refusing to allow Williams to participate in work-related training; paying Williams less than his co-workers, subjecting Williams to unwarranted scrutiny, refusing to promote Williams to management – all the while requiring him to perform the job of manager – holding secret meetings so as to hide the promotion of others from Williams, making it uncomfortable, humiliating and almost impossible for Williams to do the job he was assigned to do, Williams' complaint says.

It further alleges that Williams' objections to unfair treatment brought retaliation, like the requirement that he track all his duties and time in 15 minute increments, something only one other employee, another African American, was required to do.Williams, according to court documents, resides in Illinois due to a joint parenting agreement and had for years been allowed to work remotely under his contract with ACE. The school's actions against him, his complaint suggests, are retaliatory. In September, the Marion County Superior Court judge hearing the school's case in Indiana issued a default judgement of almost $250,000 after Williams did not appear in court, according to the Indianapolis Star.Frederick said she could not immediately confirm the details of the judgement in Indiana. ACE's attorneys were not immediately available to address the issue.Williams' complaint claims he cannot afford to represent himself in Indiana and has been unable to obtain legal representation there. In an emailed statement, Melissa Markovsky, senior director of communications and marketing for ACE, said the school has a policy of not commenting on pending legal issues.

As this case is moving through the court system, we are not able to discuss the lawsuit at this time, she said. What we can affirm is that we have taken steps to ensure that our information technology policies are more effectively implemented moving forward in order to mitigate a future circumstance similar to this incident.Belgian data governance business Collibra has today announced the closure of its Series C round, almost tripling its venture capital funding.Collibra was founded in 2008, but as a European company did not follow the typical Valley model of growth and was, according to CEO and co-founder Felix Van de Maele, already cash-flow positive/profitable before its Series B funding round led by Index Ventures.Van de Maele told The Register that, at the time of its Series B, the company jumped at the opportunity to go into growth mode. Van de Maele added that the business didn't expect to raise [this Series C round], but got a lot of inbound interest from investors and decided to pursue the opportunity to build a category defining company.Leading the unexpected $50m round of funding — which has taken total venture investment in the company to over $75m — was the exclusive billionaires' investment advisory group, Iconiq Capital, which Collibra has provided with a board seat to be occupied by general partner Matt Jacobson.

Iconiq Capital, which counts Mark Zuckerberg, Lakshmi Mittal and Jack Dorsey among its muchos-moneyed members, describes itself as a global multi-family office and merchant bank for a group of influential families. Also joining the board, as an observer, is general partner at Battery, Dharmesh Thakker. Battery had participated in the round alongside return backers Dawn Capital, Index Ventures and Newion Investments.Van de Maele told The Register that Collibra would be spending the $50m accelerating the business's investment in growth, which he added has seen it grow from about 70 to 200 people in the last year and triple its revenue in the same time to between 10 and 100 million.Collibra is seeing a lot of use-cases for data governance, according to Van de Maele, across a lot of verticals and not just its bread-and-butter territory of compliance within the financial industries.Growth will remain on the cards for now, the CEO said, stating that while there was a plan to profitability based on this round, there always is.So that's what we're executing against, he continued, and while there may be more funding rounds in the future, there's no plans for such rounds at the moment.

We have not yet reached point where everyone has 2Mbps in 2016. Stalling on the USO consultation and pushing it back adds to the confusion around a long-term vision on where we are heading, she said.Onwurah believes that Culture Secretary Ed Vaizey is too preoccupied with the upcoming referendum on the EU to think about the USO strategy. If the USO is to take the form of a publicly-funded scheme, that would need EU permission to go ahead, under the bloc's state aid laws. Therefore it is also plausible that the strategy may be on hold while we await the possibility of a Brexit. However, some have noted that the USO is a distraction from what needs to be a far more ambitious plan to improve the UK's digital infrastructure. Dan Lewis, a senior adviser at the Institute of Directors, is calling for speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second by 2030 – although that would not be under a USO.Lewis believes the key to getting better connectivity is greater market competition, rather than by setting a relatively low USO. To that end, he supports the aims of Ofcom's Digital Communications Review to open up access to BT’s telephone poles and ducts and thereby dominance of the former state-owned telecoms group. They have the right vision, but what we need now is more details as to how it will happen. We can't afford to wait, he said. BT's uncompetitive cost structure for competitors wanting access to its infrastructure should not set the pace at which we move to a digital future.

Until various regulatory and legal decisions are made, it looks like those lacking in decent connectivity will just have to wait for an update on their legal right to 10Mbps. If you're working on your mobile smart device and desktop, Druva's inSync product will protect your data on that device. Now, if you are using Box, Google Work (Google Drive, Google Docs and Gmail) or Exchange Online in Office 365, inSync will protect that cloud-resident data as well. The updated inSync also provides audit and compliance support, and it's managed through a single platform.Druva says inSync aggregates end-user data, whether it resides on a laptop, mobile device or in cloud applications, so that enterprises have better visibility and control of their data. It's a way of countering mini-data silos and combining them. The EU's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Privacy Shield require visibility of what data you have for legal and compliance requirements. InSync can help with that.Druva quotes Jeffrey Mann, a Gartner Research VP, who says: The long-expected surge in adoption of cloud office systems has been underway since mid-2014. Very soon, the question facing enterprise collaboration and communications leaders will not be whether to move these workloads to the cloud, but how painful will it be to remain on-premises?

Druva CEO and cofounder Jaspreet Singh told The Reg that inSync will be developed to support the SalesForce cloud next, and it could be ready early next quarter. He thinks SalesForce users have data protection issues at the moment.Druva inSync for Box and Office 365, including OneDrive and Exchange Online, are available today. Google Apps is in limited availability, with general availability next month. Cloud Application support is part of the Druva inSync Elite and Elite Plus subscription plans for an additional charge. Open-source software is not possible without collaboration and collaboration is not possible without communication. Collaborative communication in open source projects typically means some form of distributed chat.In the past, and indeed the present for most projects, that has meant IRC. IRC has some disadvantages, though, and developers love a shiny new toy, which is part of the reason more than a few projects have moved to Slack, the startup attracting crazy amounts of venture investment and equally crazy valuations. While there is nothing wrong with Slack – in fact it's insanely good at managing and organising distributed conversations – Slack is not necessarily the best choice for open-source projects.

Indeed this is not the purpose of Slack. Slack's intended use is to provide a single dashboard or app for all sorts of different communication tools - email, chat, Twitter and more.Slack is not primarily for public chats. The company itself discourages this use case, which should give large open-source projects pause. But more to the point, Slack is closed-source software controlled by a single company. It's the antithesis of open source. In effect, moving from IRC to Slack means replacing an open protocol with decades of open source client software development and a robust distributed system for a single point of failure. Again, not to disparage Slack. Some in open source have spoken out against Slack as a replacement for IRC, notably Drew DeVault, whose post please don't use Slack for FOSS projects made the rounds in programming circles a few months back.According to DeVault: Slack is not a tool built for open source projects to use for communication with their userbase… It's a tool built for teams and it is ill-suited to this use-case.There are essentially three problems with IRC that Slack and its imitators (more on those in a minute) solve. First, creating an account is easier. Enter an email address and password and you're done. Slack is also already widely used; there's a good chance a significant portion of developers looking to contribute to any given FOSS project are already using Slack elsewhere.

The second thing Slack offers is built-in support for attaching files and pasting code. While some IRC clients will follow links and pull in outside data like code snippets or images, some will not which means you can't rely on these features being present for everyone. With IRC you need to rely on a pastebin and file upload service to handle code and files. The other major advantage is persistent, searchable sessions. That makes it easy to see what you missed while you where away. It's possible to do this with IRC, but not easy. There are ongoing efforts to improve IRC, notably the IRCv3 project, but if you're looking for a solution right now, IRC comes up short. And there's no question that Slack is a very well designed, easy to use chat system. But it's closed source, which makes it a questionable choice for open-source projects. Still, if good old IRC really isn't working any more - and I would suggest your project take some time to really evaluate that question before proceeding - there are open-source Slack imitators that can also solve some of the problems with IRC, but are self-hosted and FOSS licensed.

This was nothing to be surprised about: in a shared-media setup the devices have to deal with the possibility of two endpoints trying to talk at once (a collision).I remember running PERFORM3 in the test lab of the publications I wrote for in the 1990s and watching with awe as throughput vanished down the toilet more and more as I introduced more endpoints. Wireless networking is a shared-media network. So if you connect more and more machines, it's going to run appallingly – just like Ethernet used to.Oh, and wireless networks run in unlicensed frequency bands. That means bands that aren't assigned to one specific company in a region, but instead are available to be shared by many.As one reference puts it: unlicensed operation typically needs to be tolerant of interference from other devices; and we're not just talking about other Wi-Fi networks. Ever fired up the ancient office microwave and watched what happens to the wireless LAN?That's because the 2.4GHz band is used by loads of stuff including microwave ovens and traditional Wi-Fi networks (802.11b and 802.11g, plus many 802.11n and 802.11ac LANs). (Incidentally, if ever there was a good reason to select the 5GHz option on your wireless kit, that is it.)

Then there's the cost. Yes, you can pick up the access point devices pretty cheaply, but that's just part of the battle. In a corporate network you need the ability to roam seamlessly around the building, with the network happily handing off connectivity as you move between coverage areas. This generally means using thin access points and a pair of central controllers (you'll want a pair for resilience, of course).Something like a Cisco 2504 will cost you around £1,700 per unit if you have 15 access points or fewer. Not bank-breaking, but add more access points and ramp up the licence and you'll be spending real money (£5,300, say, for a device that can run 50 access points). Finally, before we start talking about bits of network string, let's mention one last thing about wireless networking: although it looks easy, it isn't. Anyone who's ever sat in a classroom learning about wireless LANs (I did Cisco's Implementing Cisco Unified Wireless Networking Essentials a few years back, for instance) will have come out with their head spinning – it's a pretty complex area and aside from knowing how things work and how to configure them, you also need to be conscious of how to place your access points to ensure coverage within the building but minimise leakage out of the walls and windows. Again, not trivial.

We've established that there are some drawbacks with wireless, then. But aren't there some problems with cabled networking too?Yes, of course there are – the main ones being cost and inconvenience. LAN switches cost money and decent LAN switches cost quite a lot of money.Structured cabling also does not come cheap; flood-wiring even a medium-sized office can cost you a hefty five-figure sum. And once you've paid for the cabling and the kit, you then have the faff of re-patching stuff when people change desks (nobody with any sense will go to the expense of having enough LAN ports to patch every floor port, after all). The main advantage is the obvious one: if you have a Gigabit network, each endpoint gets 1Gbit/s of bandwidth. The network is no longer the bottleneck – if you have device A talking to device B while device C talks to device D, both pairs of endpoints will get the full network speed, as there's no need for collision detection or avoidance in a switched network. An increasingly big deal these days is the security of cabled networks. Even if you've designed your wireless network very well, you're unlikely to completely avoid leakage through walls and windows. If you use shared-key authentication at all (which is common for guest wireless networks), you'll need to be sure to change the key frequently or, preferably, use a hotel-style system whereby visitors get a one-time key that's valid only for the time they're with you.

(And if you think Oh, that's obvious, of course I'll change the key frequently: my phone still connects to a local company's guest Wi-Fi when I'm driving past, using the key I entered several years ago). With a cabled network, people have to get into the building physically to connect up, you can shut down unused switch ports, and you still have admission control functionality available should you want to be doubly sure that a device appearing on a port is legitimate and welcome. And having said all of this, if you still try to argue that wireless is the way to go, answer me this: if you love wireless so much, why not fit 802.11ac adaptors in all your servers the next time your data centre LAN kit is due for replacement?Don't get me wrong, wireless networking is great ... but only where its advantages are actually advantages. When you're sitting at your desk, a bit of wire is your friend: it gives your computer high-speed access to your data and applications. Where you're wandering around the building with your smartphone, tablet or laptop, the wireless network is fantastic because it gives you mobility at the times when you don't need super-fast performance.

But remember: the reason the wireless LAN is usable when you're bashing on your laptop in a meeting room is that most of your colleagues are sitting at their desks throwing electrons down bits of wire. Like 2.5-inch external drives which abandoned power cords ages ago, the 3.5-inch innov8 draws power from its host through its USB C wire.Seagate says it uses Ignition Boost Technology “which eliminates the need for a power adapter on an 8 TB desktop hard drive for the first time.”We guess it’s a kind of built-in adaptor. Seagate hasn't provided any details about it, saying only that it “is a true engineering milestone and breakthrough.”A Seagate blog about the drive states: An internal battery gives the drive a boost during its spin-up phase. Once the drive is up and running, the speedy new USB 3.1 bus technology works to keep Innov8 humming along—and keep the drive’s battery charged. It continues: Early on, when the drive is still cool, the battery supplies supplemental power to the hard drive ... But once the drive has warmed up, its power requirement is reduced and the host system is able to recharge the battery. So that's it; an internal battery to boost power during spin-up. Neat, but hardly a true engineering milestone.

Lowery’s proposition is that in the long term, musicians and songwriters will gain more than they lose in the short term. YouTube and Pandora offer a fraction of the royalties returned by sites such as Spotify (which isn’t very much anyway), and the free tier drives down the price. Therefore, doing what you can to sabotage the ad-supported sites is the ethical thing to do.“In the fight for fair pay, artists are not at war with the internet or really even the streaming services, we are at war with the online advertising industry,” Lowery explained. How much of a hit would artists take if every ad-supported music streamer went dark? Less than you think, Lowery suggests. The removal of Spotify’s free tier would see their payments drop only 16 per cent.“But let's not get too distracted by that because the real crime is that YouTube pays so little it’s a joke,” he argues. “YouTube revenue is not gonna save artists and or the industry at large. I will barely miss it. And YouTube is clearly inhibiting the growth of subscription services that pay higher revenues.”

Spotify has argued that if the free tier disappears, people will simply steal music. But that overlooks two factors: people pay for convenience, and a good streaming site saves you a lot of time and trouble. And the cost of Doing The Right Thing is pretty low; a tenner a month barely buys two pints of beer in London. Nor is the idea of “ethical shopping” radical or new. Much is made of the power of consumers boycotting unethical businesses, but it’s slightly hypocritical to boycott arms dealers or oil companies or big tobacco, but then shun licensed music sources which pay musicians. The music industry traditionally left songwriters and musicians last when it came to money, but the new tech oligarchs offer them even less. Pandora and YouTube are very different animals, but both have benefited from weak copyright law, albeit in very different ways.Pandora takes advantage of the uniquely socialist system of a state-administered compulsory collective licence, with US Courts setting the price of music. Songwriters simply can’t opt out. It’s a weird hangover from a consent decree on performing rights societies. ASCAP, the US equivalent of the PRS, can’t refuse a licence to a broadcaster, while the broadcaster is only obliged to enter into negotiations. In this case, the rights-holder is denied the most fundamentally property-like aspect of a property right: excludability.YouTube also benefits from a lack of excludability. As we explained here, YouTube can use a quirk in the DMCA to avoid having to put a stop to an unlicensed supply chain. The odds are stacked against anyone trying to enforce the legal supply chain. As a consequence of the DMCA loophole, YouTube generates about $1 per user, while Spotify generates $18.

In neither situation can the musician enforce their copyright cheaply and effectively and get on with making music. The deck is stacked in favour of the middleman using the music. The all-powerful middleman today is Big Tech. But changing copyright in favour of the little guy takes time, and isn't easy, especially when Facebook, Google and others have grown so wealthy from it and lobby hard against it.Lowery thinks Google's dependence on data-mining and insipid copyright makes it uniquely “fragile”, to borrow Taleb’s usage, and vulnerable to disruption. A mass consumer revolt against privacy invasions, personal data mining, and unethical behaviour could leave Google vulnerable.“My 60:40 bet is they are not nimble enough to do so without a serious hit to their revenue.”But the internet isn’t about Google, or about adtech, he says. The internet couldn’t care less about Google.Thomas Wengierow, who is 47 and originally from Lithuania – from whence he returned to attend court today – has admitted to emailing himself copies of customer's personal details from Tesco's database while working at Tesco's Baird Avenue centre in Dundee.Wengierow will be sentenced next on the 20 May. Sheriff Lorna Drummond QC deferred sentencing to receive social work background reports on Wengierow, so the court could consider a community-based sentence instead of prison. LG has conducted a developer day to interest gadget-makers in developing third-party modules for its LEGO-like G5 smartphone.

When we first set eyes on the G5 we called for LG to enable a proper ecosystem for the device. LG officials The Register spoke to at the phone's Australian launch today said an effort to do so is now well and truly under way.LG did not wish to disclose details discussed at the developer event, but did reveal that peripheral proposals included a snap-in projector it is hoped will relieve sales people of needing a laptop to deliver presentations. A credit card reader has also been discussed and monster batteries have been raised.LG's pitched the G5 squarely at consumers, but officials we spoke to today are keenly aware of the phone's potential in business, as a modular phone is seen as a way to provide specialist functionality for phones used in niche applications. Organisations that aren't quite willing to sign up for phones-as-a-service from carriers or specialists and want the ability to do some repairs or upgrades are also on the company's mind.In Australia, the phone comes with an offer that will interest individuals and businesses alike: a free replacement screen if the display is accidentally broken in the first six months after purchase. The offer only applies for phones bought for the next few months, but LG sees it as an extension of the phone's modular concept.

Let's hope the offer causes hordes of people to buy the device: it would be lovely if a market for free replacement screens emerged as a result. Seagate's LaCie external storage drives unit has come up with a video editing workstation user's wet dream: 96TB capacity and 2.6GB/sec throughput from a Thunderbolt 3-accessed desktop tower. The Seagate drives are built for 24/7 operation; 8,760 hours a year, and the system comes with a five year warranty. With Thunderbolt 3 a user can daisy chain dual 4K displays or a single 5K display to the LaCie 12big. It's possible to provide power to a compatible laptop through the Thunderbolt 3 cable. The systems is suited, LaCie says, for the processing of data from 4, 5, and 6K cameras. With this storage sub-system speed and "for big projects packed with high-def clips, thumbnail and preview rendering becomes much more responsive."The UK’s second largest retailer, which is increasingly competing online against Amazon and more digital-savvy retail peers and buying Home Retail Group for £1.3bn, will hire software developers, software development managers, DevOps engineers and Agile coaches to join its 900-strong IT team.

Delegates at these cons are a mix of professional penetration testers and security admins, hackers of dubious history, curious developers, and students. Some of those attending are partly responsible for defending the nation’s biggest and most important companies. Most of these volunteer-run and continually sold-out events cost between A$50 and A$150, with some occasionally free for the most broke hacker, and are home to a staple of community-run lockpick and capture the flag competitions lasting what is a typically two-day conference. After an arguable decade of hiatus, the cheap grassroots cons have spread out to cover almost all Australian states. Hackers have WAHCKON in Perth, CrikeyCon in Brisbane, Platypuscon in Sydney, BSides in Canberra, Unrest in Melbourne, and regional pillar Kiwicon in Wellington. These could not be further from the typical C-level security event where ticket prices demand up to A$2000, technical talks are scarce, and vendor booths and pressed suits are as prolific as branded backpacks.BSides Canberra, held on the shoulder of the Government’s large defence sector-orientated Australian Cyber Security Conference (ACSC), concluded its second and last day to a standing ovation. The $50 hacker meet run by security pair Silvio Cesare and Kylie McDevitt sold out quickly. “There are many reasons we started BSides Canberra,” co-organiser Cesare says. “We wanted to provide a local conference for Canberra at which we could inspire the next generation of hackers.”

The popular pair have a focus on encouraging new blood into the security sector at large, and more specifically into the conference circuit to consume and present new research. To that end they have kept the ticket prices rock bottom to ensure it is accessible to anyone interested in the field.Sponsorship from community-centric security firms means the conference breaks even, throws two open-bar parties, and gives each of the 360 delegates a custom t-shirt and home-made Arduino badge that displays the conference running order. Says Cesare: “… we think there will be people at corporate conference that will go nowhere near a hackercon and vice versa but there will also be an overlap,” Cesare says. “We don’t make a profit … this is just our passion.”Highlights of the con include auctioning nasty Oracle zeroday flaws – one written on a napkin – to fund a ‘steak dinner’ for the organisers, a “nail-biting” capture the flag competition decided in the last four minutes, and some delegate badge re-tweaking.
Who: A stable core 'Crüe' of Bogan, Pipes (retired), metlstorm, Sharrow, Ad, Vex, Madman, Squirrelboy, and Lisa, along with a retinue of volunteers who make the ship sail, and SiteHost who host the con's web presence gratis.Kiwicon celebrates its tenth year in November and is placed at the top of many Aussie and Kiwi hacker con wish lists. It has ballooned in size from a small gathering at a university campus building to outgrow Wellington's iconic Opera House and the St. James Theatre.

Local and overseas speakers come to offer technical strolls, highlight horrid holes in enterprise software and advice to improve delegates' exploitation prowess, and a litany of illustrations that paint the sorry state of information security. This all takes place against a backdrop of metal music and pyrotechnics. Attendees gain perspective on the event with the aid of local craft beer bearing Kiwicon insignia. The genesis was simple; if the Aussies can do it, surely we can? con organiser Metlstorm says. How hard can it be to get 80 people in a room, talk about computer hacking, then go to the pub? … From there Kiwicon just burgeoned into a monster that fundamentally is built in our own image of not taking ourselves very seriously. What is now more of a hacker themed variety show Kiwicon has become a slick entertaining production that balances showmanship with technical content that guarantees the expanded 2200 seats this year will again fill fast. The upcoming event will likely be the biggest antipodean security con, despite its banishment of the immortal trade event annoyances: vendor shillin', big money illin', no booth babes, no booths, no paid talks, no swag bags full of crap you're gonna throw out immediately, no bullshit, and of course the sticker shock of the ticket price, the respected penetration tester says.

Recent notable talks include William Turner's evisceration of then still-vulnerable Christchurch bus system, a feat which led to the then kid hacker winning 'most likely to be arrested' and, through subsequent bureaucratic hamfisting, led to admin credentials being disclosed in public freedom of information documents.Another year hacker Denis Andzakovic outfitted his Yamaha with a HUD and hardware to build a Wi-Fi war bike. At last year's con two hackers displayed equal measures of daring and showmanship when revealing algorithm flaws that allowed Kiwis to print their own non-expiring discount petrol coupons scanned at the pump. They even printed and successfully demonstrated the barcodes printed on teeshirts.Kiwicon is like all the community cons that followed it a manifestation of hacker imaginings. We built the con we wanted to go to; cheap, real, friendly and interesting, Metlstorm says. That probably excludes the national-security F35-lovin' conference crowd. Tradeshow events showcase the root cause of the problems in the infosec industry, Metlstorm says. We humbly aim to be the opposite.

The con bears a different theme each year which of late tend to mock the corporate technology world and the military industrial complex: 'it's always 1989 in computer security' chimed one 8-bit motif, while cyber-friends was painted on Kiwicon 7 as an answer to the vacuous cries of cyber war.Still, Kiwicon is an inclusive event and Meltstorm welcomes the errant military industrial tradeshow traveller: So, if the day comes when they're ready to accept empiricism into their cold dead hearts, after all their shit got owned via the security products they bought or sold, we'll be here still, actual practitioners doing the actual work that actually advances the state of the motherf**kin' art.
Unrest is a brand spanking new security con set to hold the first of what history says will be many events in Melbourne's north. The hacker con is billed as an audiovisual experience which will eschew the traditional conference space along with its filter coffee, jerks in suits, and awful hors d'oeuvre for an unconventional audio-visual experience. The con with its fictitious Ministry of Unrest and Illuminati-esque iconography is home to promising technical and social engineering talks, workshops, and a chill-out art and gaming area.It is the brainchild of penetration tester, lockpicker, and hopeful comedian Wily. We wanted to do something different, he says. A non-traditional venue, no corporate sponsorship, low cost, and high impact.

Wily gives a nod to Ruxcon, the established but more pricer Melbourne hacker con that since 2003 has regularly sold out with technical talks and workshops. Ruxcon has been around in Australia since 2003, and has always brought together the Australian community, Wily says. Other community hacker conferences have sprung up around the country, and there is certainly room for more of these events. There is, Wily says, space for both the pricer cons such as the recently held AusCERT corporate conference in Queensland's Gold Coast, and the more expensive Syscan technical hacker con in Singapore, and the grassroots community events. But without the big ticket price tag, Wily is merely aiming to break even: We are hoping to break even, and if we're lucky we might, he says. When asked by Vulture South if he and his fellow con organisers 'hate money', the hacker sums up their collective commitment to community: we are a bunch of overpaid infosec jerks.
This Sydney startup con is a hands-on hacker meet where the policy is show up with a laptop or not at all. Co-organiser lin_s has, with a little help from his friends, developed a conference that emphasises practical hacker experimentation. “We started the con and our community (Just Hack Shit) on the basis that we wanted to see something different from the traditional security content of just speakers talking at the audience,” she says. “We wanted to build a group where people from all walks of life could come and do infosec nerd stuff on the proviso that they had to participate.”

There are some password-managing products that use facial recognition to confirm the identity of a user, but LogmeOnce argues they are not accurate enough, producing a high rate of false positives and negatives, ie: letting others into your account, or refusing you access. Before you get too excited however, there are two potential caveats with the system. For one, unless you decide to remove the master password, it will still be there even with the PhotoLogin feature; if enabled, that master password will still grant access to your account, it's just that you may choose to no longer type it in.That means that if you choose a poor master password, you are opening yourself up to being hacked regardless of whether or not you use the photo-based auth. And second, LogmeOnce is cloud-based, running on Amazon's servers. Therefore, if you choose to, your passwords are stored on someone else's computers rather than on your own device. To hackers, LogmeOnce will look like one big pot of honey to crack open, allowing them to devour everyone's credentials.LogmeOnce told El Reg you can, alternatively, choose to store your passwords on your local device or on a USB stick rather than send them to the cloud. That would however limit your ability to sync passwords across devices. It also claims that passwords are encrypted on your local device before being sent to the cloud.

As ever, it's a balance. Since people are persistently better at snapping selfies and having a phone to hand than remembering complex passwords, the photo login could be just the feature that causes a lot of folks to start using a password manager rather than the same two or three weak passwords for everything. That can only be a good thing. A California woman has won $10,000 from Microsoft after a sneaky Windows 10 update wrecked the computer she used to run her business. Now she's urging everyone to follow suit and fight back.Teri Goldstein – who manages a travel agency in Sausalito, just north of San Francisco – told The Register she landed the compensation by taking Microsoft to a small claims court.Rather than pursue a regular lawsuit, she chose the smaller court because it was better suited to sorting out consumer complaints. Crucially, it meant Microsoft couldn't send one of its top-gun lawyers – or any lawyer in fact: small claims courts are informal and attorneys are generally not allowed. Instead, Redmond-based Microsoft had to send a consumer complaints rep to argue its case.

That put her on an equal footing with the multibillion-dollar software giant, giving her a fair fight.Goldstein told us Microsoft needed to be held accountable for its negligence regarding the forced Windows 10 upgrade, which rendered many users' computers useless.Microsoft cannot just say 'read our user agreement form, we hold no responsibility, you cannot sue us and go away.' Just because they are a large corporation does not make them exempt from consumer business rules, she said.
Goldstein told the Marin County Superior Court in San Rafael that in August last year, Windows 10 forced its upgrade on my business computer without my knowledge or permission. This update caused the Windows 7 Home Premium PC to crash and, even when it booted back up, made it mostly unusable. Goldstein had no idea what the problem was – she hadn't even heard of Windows 10 at this point – so complained to her cable provider, thinking it was a problem with her internet connection. After Comcast told her the problem was entirely at her end, she contacted Microsoft. After hours and hours of support desk calls, her computer remained in a barely usable state: three technicians uninstalled and reinstalled the operating system software to no avail. It was a complete waste of time.

It took every minute of the day on the phone with Microsoft, she told The Register. She told the court the Microsoft technicians' constant work remotely tied up days of [her] time all during the month of August, and [she] could not work. After an entire day, one technician even got [her] husband involved after he had worked a long day at this job, asking him for assistance.Goldstein believes her PC – unbeknownst to her – was enrolled in the Windows 10 beta program, meaning she was left with broken unfinished code that could not be uninstalled from her Windows 7 Home Premium system. In October, she gave up and bought a new laptop. After further complaints, which Goldstein says were ignored, a Microsoft regional manager eventually offered her $150 in compensation. He was continually rude, unwilling to assist me and told me not to contact him, Goldstein said. When I asked for his suggestions on what to do, his responses were 'I cannot help you,' 'Do not call or contact me,' and finally 'Do not ever contact me again.' It was made very clear that he just wanted me to go away and had no concern about my problem. In January this year, Goldstein went to the small claims court in her county to seek compensation for wages and lost business while her computer was borked.California is one of the strictest states in the US regarding consumer rights, Goldstein told us. There is a California Uniform Commercial Code which protects consumers. In section 1792 it clearly states that all products and services sold or distributed in California have an implied warranty to be fit for purpose.

This code overrides any corporation's user agreement form. Microsoft knew that its Windows 10 was not fit for purpose and allowed its release anyway. They used thousands of people like myself to learn how to troubleshoot the problems with no concern of consequences to the users. This is totally wrong. In a judgment handed down in March, Microsoft was ordered to pay $10,000 (£7,500) to Goldstein, and $90 towards her costs. Microsoft appealed the decision but dropped this action last month. A spokeswoman for the Windows maker told us what it also told the Seattle Times last week: Microsoft dropped its appeal to avoid the expense of further litigation.Goldstein added to El Reg: My reason for taking them to small claims court was to collect monetary loss due me from this effect of their forced upgrade and also to hold them accountable for their wrongdoing. I urge every person who has a consumer issue to know their rights and fight back. Only then will large corporations begin to understand that they cannot just do what they want. NASCAR, America's favorite no-right-turn racing format, has joined the growing ranks of people hit by, and paying out to fix, ransomware.

Intrusive, every single one.Google is apparently going to fold Chrome OS into Android, potentially killing the development of a secure, lightweight desktop OS in the process. The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, claims engineers at the Mountain View giant have spent the past two years merging Chrome OS into Android. The end result will be an all-encompassing OS for mobile devices and notebooks, we're told. The software will be demonstrated by the end of 2016, and released the next year, the WSJ claims.Chrome OS was pitched as an operating system for low-powered netbooks, and is largely aimed at the education market. It is built from the open-source Chromium OS, a minimal Gentoo-derived GNU/Linux operating system that pretty much does everything through the Chrome (or Chromium) web browser.

Although it can run a handful of native apps offline, it's mostly a terminal to the web: word processing, games, social nattering, and so on, can all be done online through the browser. The integration of Chrome OS into Android is not unexpected: a merging of the two operating systems has been on the cards since 2013, when Google Android exec Andy Rubin was replaced by Chrome OS veteran Sundar Pichai. A year later, Google showed off technology allowing Android apps to run on Chrome OS systems, and today Pichai is Google's chief exec. The reported move is not without its critics, particularly in the security community. While Chrome OS is praised for its minimal attack surface and locked-down sandboxed browser environment, Android has been riddled with vulnerabilities. If development of Chrome OS stalls while Googlers focus on building a laptop-friendly Android, that's what you might call bad news.Microsoft released build 10572 of Windows 10 Mobile last week, hot on the heels of build 10549, as the release date nears for the first Windows 10 smartphones, the Lumia 950 and 950XL, expected in November.

The company has not made it easy for Windows Insiders keeping up with the builds. Both 10549 and 10572 require first resetting your phone back to Windows Phone 8.1, which means double the effort. The Windows Phone story is heartbreaking for its fans, with Microsoft first acquiring Nokia, the main device vendor, and then dismantling most of it, declaring a change of strategy. What the new strategy is has never been clearly articulated, but it seems to involve a retreat from the mainstream smartphone market. Microsoft phones will instead be ultra-portable PCs, aimed at business and productivity users, with the ability to connect to full-size displays, keyboard and mouse. This feature, called Continuum, requires new hardware, even though Windows 10 Mobile will install on most existing Windows 8.1 devices. The reason seems to be lack of dual-display capability in existing hardware.Existing devices, like the Lumia 830 on which this review is being typed, can connect wirelessly to full-size displays, but only with display mirroring, limiting the screen resolution. True Continuum displays different content on each screen. Therefore the forthcoming HD-500 Display Dock requires a Lumia 950 or 950XL.Despite this limitation, there are features in this build that seem to be aimed at Continuum users. After connecting to an external display, there is an Advanced setting appears that only offers “Mirror what’s on my device”, but which would presumably have further options on new hardware.

You can also reduce the size of the text and other on-screen items, making it almost unreadable on the phone itself, but more usable on the connected display. This makes it feasible to type a document in Word Mobile, though I cannot pretend it is a great experience. Connecting a Bluetooth mouse is no-go for me; the mouse works, but types random repeating characters as a side-effect. Without a mouse, it is fiddly to perform operations like taking a screenshot, inserting it into the document, and cropping it. I found myself looking forward to finishing the document on a real PC.Another issue is power management. In full Windows 10, you can vary how quickly the screen goes off after inactivity, according to whether the device is on battery or external power. This is not possible in the current build, and screen time-outs are particularly annoying since the wireless display disconnects.Continuum lets you connect to an external display with dual screens
Continuum lets you connect to an external display with dual screens
Real Continuum will be a better experience, though no doubt there will still be annoyances. The open question here is how useful it will be. It only makes sense if you are travelling without a laptop or tablet, and to use it you will need keyboard, mouse and a display with either the Microsoft dock or wireless connectivity. It is unlikely to replace a PC since x86 applications will not run. It all sounds rather niche. How is Windows 10 Mobile shaping up as a smartphone OS? It is usable though there is still occasional jerkiness on the Lumia 830 used for this review. There are several things to like. App navigation is excellent, with the Start menu available by swiping in from the right, and pinned tiles which support groups as well as multiple sizes. Cortana, Microsoft's digital assistant, makes more sense on a phone than on a PC, and works rather well, with decent voice recognition as well as handy features like reading incoming texts and accepting dictated replies, now fixed to be always on (as an option) rather than restricted to Bluetoooth audio. Give Cortana a sum to do, and a calculator appears embedded in the reply, another neat feature.

Police have seized the laptop of a BBC journalist who had interviewed men identifying themselves with jihadist organisation Islamic State in order to access these communications. The laptop of Secunder Kermani was taken by police under powers available through the Terrorism Act 2000, according to the Independent. The Register understands Kermani has not been detained or questioned.Kermani, a journalist with BBC's flagship current affairs programme Newsnight, had produced interviews and features on British-born terrorists and others from Western backgrounds sympathetic to jihadist organisation Islamic State. While the seizure was ostensibly to acquire the journalist's communications with one such source, it is notable because it forced Kermani to hand over his personal property, rather than a standard request to an internet service provider to collect retained communications data.According to a BBC spokesperson: Police obtained an order under the Terrorism Act requiring the BBC to hand over communication between a Newsnight journalist and a man in Syria who had publicly identified himself as an IS member. The man had featured in Newsnight reports and was not a confidential source. While controversy persists regarding police powers under RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) to target the communications of journalists, previous complaints triggered reforms that now require the police to obtain a court-issued warrant before targeting journalists' communications. However, the Interception of Communication Commissioner's Office (IOCCO) reported this year that many police forces were failing to do so.

Dell was thrust into the spotlight yesterday when researchers first broke word of eDellRoot, a rogue certificate authority quietly installed on Windows machines that can be exploited by man-in-the-middle attackers to decrypt people's encrypted web traffic. The Texas PC-slinger said the issue was merely a mishap related to its user support tools. Dell bristled at suggestions the flaw should be considered malware or adware, but nonetheless it has provided users with a removal tool. The American biz has also pushed a software update that will automatically remove the vulnerable root CA cert from its machines. Dell has published a guide on how to remove the web security backdoor it installed in its Windows laptops and desktop PCs.This confirms what we all know by now – that Dell was selling computers with a rather embarrassing hole it in their defenses.New models from the XPS, Precision and Inspiron families include a powerful root CA certificate called eDellRoot, which puts the machines' owners at risk of identity theft and banking fraud. The self-signed certificate is bundled with its private key, which is a boon for man-in-the-middle attackers: for example, if an affected Dell connects to a malicious Wi-Fi hotspot, whoever runs that hotspot can use Dell's cert and key to silently decrypt the victims' web traffic. This would reveal their usernames, passwords, session cookies and other sensitive details, when shopping or banking online, or connecting to any other HTTPS-protected website.Stunningly, the certificate cannot be simply removed: a .DLL plugin included with the root certificate reinstalls the file if it is deleted. One has to delete the .DLL – Dell.Foundation.Agent.Plugins.eDell.dll – as well as the eDellRoot certificate.

Dell has posted information [.docx] on how to do this properly, and future machines will not include the dangerous root CA cert. A software update process will run from November 24 that will remove the certificate automatically from machines, we're told. The recent situation raised is related to an on-the-box support certificate intended to provide a better, faster and easier customer support experience. Unfortunately, the certificate introduced an unintended security vulnerability.
Dell said that it started including the root CA certificate with machines in August, although an Inspiron 15 series laptop we bought in July has an eDellRoot certificate on it.We deeply regret that this has happened and are taking steps to address it, added Laura Thomas, Dell's chief blogger. The certificate is not malware or adware. Rather, it was intended to provide the system service tag to Dell online support allowing us to quickly identify the computer model, making it easier and faster to service our customers. This certificate is not being used to collect personal customer information.

It’s also important to note that the certificate will not reinstall itself once it is properly removed using the recommended Dell process. If you've got a new Dell, you can check here to see if you the dodgy root CA cert installed. For everyone, we'll leave you with this nightmare fuel... Updated The rogue root certificate in new Dell computers – a certificate that allows people to be spied on when banking and shopping online – will magically reinstall itself even when deleted.El Reg can confirm that the eDellRoot root CA cert, discovered over the weekend, automatically reappears when removed from the Windows operating system. We tried this on a Windows 8 Inspiron 15 series laptop that was bought in July this year for our San Francisco office. You can find the dangerous certificate by opening up the Start menu, select Run, type in certmgr.msc into the box and hit Enter. Then open up the Trusted Root Certification Authority folder on the left, then Certificates, and in the window should appear eDellRoot. That's the SOB you're looking for. Right-click over it, hit Remove, click through the warning box. And it's gone.

Then reboot, reopen certmgr.msc – the Windows certificate manager – and search for the certificate eDellRoot. Bingo, it's back. Visiting one of the websites that test whether you have a vulnerable certificate installed reveals that, yes, the removed root CA cert was put back during or after the reboot.Lenovo had a similar party trick with its bloatware earlier this year, using Microsoft's Windows Platform Binary Table. How Dell reinstates the missing certificate is not clear at this stage.
But the cat came back the very next day, er, reboot ... the Dell eDellRoot cert that just won't die (click to enlarge)
This means that the recommended procedure to get rid of the vulnerable root CA file on Windows will not work, as the component reappears upon restart. The certificate, issued by Dell in April and expires in 2039, contains a private key that can be extracted and used to pull off man-in-the-middle attacks on Dell owners – like Lenovo's Superfish cluster-fsck.For example, usernames, passwords, session cookies and other sensitive information can be silently siphoned from affected Dell machines when they connect to the web through malicious Wi-Fi hotspots in cafes, hospitals, airports, and so on.People with recent XPS, Precision and Inspiron models should use Mozilla's Firefox to browse the web as this software has its own set of trusted certification authorities, and ignores the dangerous eDellRoot cert.

Dell's support line tells people the certificate doesn't cause any threat to the system. On Twitter, the IT giant said: Customer security and privacy is a top concern for Dell. We are investigating the issue and will have further updates soon.According to an analysis [PDF] by Duo Security, a bundled plugin reinstalls the root CA file if it is removed. First, you must delete Dell.Foundation.Agent.Plugins.eDell.dll from your system (search for it) and then remove the eDellRoot root CA certificate. The cert, we're told, is used with the plugin for receiving cryptographically signed telemetry requests; said telemetry includes things like the machine's service tag, a seven-character serial number that identifies the computer model, if not the individual machine. This highlights a disturbing trend among original equipment manufacturer (OEM) hardware vendors. Tampering with certificate stores exposes users to unnecessary, increased risk, the Duo team – Darren Kemp, Mikhail Davidov, and Kyle Lady – wrote in their report.Tampering with the certificate store is a questionable practice, and OEM’s need to be careful when adding new trusted certificates, especially root certificates. Sadly, OEM manufacturers seem to not be learning from historical mistakes and keep making them over and over.

Dell ships computers with all the tools necessary for crooks to spy on the owners' online banking, shopping, webmail, and more. The US IT titan installs a powerful root CA certificate, including its private key, on its Windows notebooks and desktops. These can be abused by eavesdropping miscreants to silently decrypt encrypted web browser traffic without victims noticing. If you try to remove the dodgy certificate, the file is automatically reinstalled during or after the next boot up. The self-signed root CA cert appears to have been created in early April this year, and expires in the year 2039.How can this certificate be abused? Well, an attacker could, for example, set up a malicious Wi-Fi hotspot in a cafe or hospital, intercept connections from Dell machines, and then automatically strip away the encryption – a classic man-in-the-middle attack, all enabled by Dell's security blunder. The decrypted traffic will include usernames, passwords, session cookies, and other sensitive information. The root CA certificate – eDellRoot – can even be used to sign programs, allowing scumbags to dress up malware as legit apps.Web browsers, and other software, running on the affected Dell hardware will trust any certificates issued by eDellRoot. When the browser tries to connect to, say, your bank's HTTPS-protected website, it could in fact be connecting to a malicious system on your network, such as the aforementioned evil wireless hotspot. This system can pretend to be your bank's website, using an eDellRoot-signed SSL certificate, and you would be none the wiser as you type in your username and password. The intercepting system can even log into the bank on your behalf and pass the webpages back to your browser so you're none the wiser of what's going on.

Dell customers reported over the weekend finding the root CA certificate on newer Dell XPS, Precision and Inspiron desktops and notebooks. So far, we've seen reports on Twitter and Reddit of the following affected gear: the XPS 15, Latitude E7450, Inspirion 5548, Inspirion 5000, Inspiron 3647, and the Precision M4800.Information security expert Kenn White has created a webpage that demonstrates how vulnerable Dell computers will happily accept HTTPS connections signed with the eDellRoot key.Crucially, White also said Firefox is not affected by the rogue certificate because it uses its own set of trusted certs.Another site to test whether your Dell is vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks can be found here.Dell computer owner Joe Nord, who blogged details of the certificate installed in his Inspirion machine, noted the obvious security flaw with eDellRoot.Root certificates are always self-signed, so all I really know is that eDellRoot says eDellRoot is legit, he explained. Where it breaks down is that the private key IS PRESENT on my computer and that means ... bad.Dell has yet to respond to a request for comment on the matter, although the Dell Cares support account on Twitter is downplaying the risk of attack for users:The issue is just like Lenovo's February Superfish scandal in which the PC-slinger was caught loading its machines with a tool capable of intercepting SSL traffic and injecting adverts into pages. In fact, the Dell certificate was created months after the Superfish blowup – was no one at the Texas goliath paying attention?

Battery for Apple A1148

I don’t mind the murmuring, nor the sociable way in which office minions seek confirmation from colleagues as a means of bolstering their failing courage. The annoying bit is the way no-one dares express what it is that is supposed to be taking place any minute now.It is, of course, the daily morning status meeting which meets every day and every morning, at the same time: 9:30am. Yet everyone is scared of mentioning it by name, as if they’re afraid it might invoke a hex or cause kittens to be drowned on the other side of the Earth. There is logic to all this. Given that our developers refer to themselves as “wizards” and indeed the entire IT project appears to be largely a work of magical fiction, our daily morning status meeting is probably a kind of Voldemort. It shall not be named.Recently, they have begun referring to it as the “nine-thirty”, which gives it both cryptic anonymity and a kind of numeric retro vibe, like Hawaii Five-O.That said, looking across the meadow of freshly installed desk pods, interspaced around a silk-cushioned breakout area, an incomprehensibly complex Apple Pay-enabled coffee machine and the executive ball-pond, it’s not exactly Hogwarts.

No indeed – it’s a veritable circus of death. Its pathway is painted in red and, behind it, a trail of the dead. Back at Hawaii Five-O, McGarrett is wearing a frown.A juvenile colleague twangs my headphones. “Shall we...?” Typical: blind youth taking the path of least resistance. With heavy heart, I slink my way to the giant aquarium that masquerades as the meeting room, offering all the privacy of a Facebook account. Here’s the worst bit: it is not just a status meeting but a stand-up. The first time I attended one of these, I totally misjudged the concept and baffled my colleagues by telling them about a funny thing that had happened on my way there, before telling them they’d been a great audience and wishing them goodnight. The purpose of a stand-up, I now understand, is to speed up the meeting by ensuring the discomfort all attendees by denying them the opportunity to sit. This is supposed to encourage everyone to be brief in their status reports so the meeting ends quickly and they can dart back to their pods and rest their chins. Each of us in turn delivers a brief update on what we are doing at the moment. When it’s my turn, I give my usual status: “I am standing in a meeting room, when I should really be working, and I am telling you this”.I am a giant of prevarication. I am a colossus of meeting-speak. I am Empire State Human.

Job done, I turn to an adjacent colleague, raise my eyebrows and nod at him to indicate that it’s his turn. I can do this so convincingly now that he gives a little twitch and immediately blurts into his own report before giving the project manager a chance to question mine.As I lean precariously against one of the glass partitions, I return to my dreams of leaving and scroll through the unanswered work calls and emails that are popping up in real time on my smartphone. Instead of dealing with these, I am forced to endure the the stand-up inanities of the glass torture chamber for another half-hour. Life kills, eh?When I did this during a status meeting last week, one of the emails revealed the findings of a Harris Poll, commissioned by SaaS work management outfit Clarizen, into the crushing effect of status meetings on productivity. It claimed that staff spend up to 30 per cent of their working week in status meetings.Logically, this means they spend almost a third of their time explaining to colleagues and bosses what they do during the other two-thirds. Strictly speaking, however, they’d have to spend only two-thirds of my time explaining what they had been doing during those two-thirds, plus another third reporting on the remaining third that they’d spent in status meetings.

Most intriguing was the poll finding that of the 65 per cent who confess to multitasking during a meeting, 11 per cent spend the time on the toilet. This sounded like a terrific idea and I was determined to try it out the next morning, but I can assure you from personal experience it does not work. As it turns out, as soon as you try to sit down on the bucket, the project manager insists that everyone should remain standing. Bloody stand-ups, they’re so inconvenient.I have the feeling that the clunky, over-wrought meetings of the past were rather more substantial than the modern ones that take place every nine-thirty. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no fan of the past. Most things get better over time. But some things get worse and this just happens to be one of them.Just occasionally, originals can sometimes feel meatier than their flimsy modern iterations. A bit like CRT monitors in a way: they might have been clunky with lots of wires and made an irritating buzzing sound, but they had substance and integrity back then before turning into shiny, lightweight crap.Panasonic's the latest company to fall foul of dodgy batteries, finding that the rechargeables shipped with its CF-S10 laptop may overheat, cause smoke, or may ignite causing a risk of a fire or a burn hazard to consumers and the computer.

The CF-VZSU61U rechargeable battery pack is the culprit and appears to have come to the attention of Japanese authorities in late 2015, according to this report: A serious product accident occurred involving a battery pack for a laptop computer manufactured by Panasonic Corporation, causing the product to ignite and to burn its surroundings.Canada has since issued a recall for the battery back and Australia's joined in. Each nation is mentioning different time spans for its recall. Japan and Canada [PDF] say machines manufactured between July 2011 and April 2012 have the combustible batteries. Australia says machines bought between April 1st, 2012 and June 1st, 2013 have the problem.Wherever you are, check out the links above, which provide contact details, so you can secure a replacement that Panasonic is handing out gratis. As it ought. The can of worms we opened when we learned of the server switched off after eighteen years and ten months' service is still wriggling, as a reader has contacted us to tell of nearly 30-year-old laptops still in service.Reader “Holrum” says he has “a couple dozen Toshiba T1000 laptops from the mid 1980's still fully functional (including floppy drives).”The T1000 was introduced in 1987, but that's long enough that we'll forgive Holrum the slight lapse, not least because the machine was one of the very first computers to use a clamshell form factor.

Notebook Akku Dell inspiron 15
