Jedenfalls bereitet sich die Industrie, allen voran Sandisk, Sony und Nikon, auf diese Entwicklung vor und entwickelt einen neuen Standard, den sie jetzt der CompactFlash Association (CFA) unterbreitet. Wird die neue Norm gutgeheissen, so d¨¹rfte damit den Herstellern von Digital- und Videokameras eine interessante Zukunft offenstehen.


Die vorgeschlagenen technischen Daten sehen mit einem PCI Express Interface eine Daten¨¹bertragungsrate von 500 Megabytes pro Sekunde (MB/s) vor, das ist mehr als das Dreifache der bisherigen Datenrate bei CF-Karten von maximal 167 MB/s. Das sind gute Neuigkeiten f¨¹r Profifotografen, die vorwiegend im RAW-Modus arbeiten und dadurch schnellere Bildfolgen realisieren können. Gleichzeitig soll die neue Technologie weniger Energie benötigen, so dass die Akkuleistung länger anhält.Aber nicht nur die Datentransferrate steht im Vordergrund der Entwicklung der neuen Speicherkarten-Generation, sondern auch die Speicherkapazität soll deutlich erhöht werden und in Zukunft ¨¹ber 2 Terabytes (rund 2x 1000 Gigabytes) liegen. Damit soll vor allem der Produktion von datenintensiven HD- (und 3D-?) Videos Rechnung getragen werden. Die Form der neuen CF-Speicherkarten soll unverändert bleiben, doch sollen technische Massnahmen getroffen werden, um die Speicherkarten robuster und betriebssicherer zu gestalten.



Erste Reaktionen der CompactFlash Association (CFA) auf den Vorschlag der neuen Speicherkarten-Generation waren durchwegs positiv, öffnen sie doch ein grosses Potential zur Entwicklung neuer Kameramodelle, insbesondere f¨¹r die professionellen Fotografie und Videoproduktion.Mit ihrem beinahe APS-C-grossen und speziellen dreischichtigen Fotosensor versprechen die beiden neuen Kompaktmodelle von Sigma höchste Bildqualität f¨¹r Qualitätsfanatiker. Während die DP1x ein 28er-Weitwinkel besitzt, ist die DP2s mit einem 41er-Normalobjektiv ausgestattet.Die beiden Kameras sind äusserlich identisch, nur ragt an der DP2s das Objektiv etwas mehr heraus. Vorgestellt wurden beide bereits an der diesjährigen PMA und in unserem Bericht von dort. Nun sind sie f¨¹r 1195 Franken hierzulande verf¨¹gbar.


Der Bildsensor der DP1x und DP2s ist so gross wie der in den digitalen Spiegelreflex-Kameras und damit 7 bis 12 mal grösser als die Bildsensoren in herkömmlichen kompakten Digitalkameras. Dies garantiert eine beachtliche Leistung. Die Pixelgrösse des Bildsensors misst 7.8¦Ìm. Speziell ist jedoch die dreischichtige Bauweise des 14 Megapixel-Direktbildsensors (Auflösung: 3 x 2652px ¡Á1768 px).Oben ist ein typischer Sensor schematisiert, der mit Farbfiltern im sogenannten Bayer-Muster best¨¹ckt ist. Hier m¨¹ssen die fehlenden Informationen pro Farbkanal mittels Farbinterpolation annähernd errechnet werden. Unten das Schema des Foveon-Direktsensors.Der Sensor macht sich die Tatsache zu nutze, dass das eingebettete Silizium rotes, gr¨¹nes und blaues Licht in jeweils unterschiedlichen Tiefen aufzeichnet, was die vollständige Aufzeichnung der Farbinformation in jedem Pixel erlaubt. Dadurch ist dieser Direktbildsensor in der Lage, alle RGB-Komponenten im vollen Umfang an jeder Pixelposition festzuhalten, genau wie ein Farbfilm. Dies f¨¹hrt zu einer exakten Aufzeichnung der Farben und zu einem hohen Detailreichtum mit ausgezeichneter Schärfe.


Die neue kompakte Digitalkamera Sigma DP1x besitzt den „TRUE II¡°-Bildprozessor, wie er auch in der Spiegelreflexkamera Sigma SD15 und in der kompakten Sigma DP2s verwendet wird.Das 1:4.0/16.6 mm-Objektiv entspricht einem 28mm-Weitwinkelobjektiv bei Kleinbild und wurde f¨¹r höchstmögliche Bildqualität in Verbindung mit dem speziellen Foveon-Fotosensor entwickelt.Der „True II¡°- Bildprozessor von Sigma wurde nun auch in die DP1x integriert, dem ersten Bildprozessor der speziell f¨¹r die Zusammenarbeit mit dem 3-schichtigen „Foveon X3¡°-Sensor konzipiert wurde. Ein neuer Rechenprozess optimiert die optischen Signale, beschleunigt interne Prozesse und lässt hoch aufgelöste Bilder mit fein abgestuften Tönen entstehen.Die Sigma DP1x ist mit einem 2.5-Zoll- TFT-LCD-Monitor ausgestattet, der eine 100-Prozent- Bildvorschau bietet, um die Kontrolle des Bildaufbaus, der Fokussierung und der Belichtung schnell und einfach zu ermöglichen.


Diese Kompaktkamera gestattet die Aufzeichnung der Bilddaten in dem schnellen und bequemen JPEG-Format sowie im RAW-Format (. X3F), das die höchstmögliche Qualität der Bilddaten erhält.
Die Sigma DP2s ist der Nachfolger der DP2, die im April 2009 auf den Markt kam. Die neue DP2s verf¨¹gt ¨¹ber einen neuen AF-Algorithmus, einen Energiesparmodus und eine farblich neu gestaltete R¨¹ckseite. Der neue AF-Algorithmus ermöglicht schnelleres und präzises Autofokussieren. Der Energiesparmodus der DP2s reduziert den Stromverbrauch der Kamera und ermöglicht mehr Aufnahmen mit einer Akku-LAdung erstellt werden.Neu ist ausserdem das lichtstarke 1:2,8/24.2mm Objektiv, das einem 41mm -Objektiv bei Kleinbild entspricht. Das Objektiv wurde speziell f¨¹r die DP2s entwickelt, um die höchstmögliche Bildqualität mit dem Vollfarben-Direktbildsensor zu erzielen.

Alle neuen Legria HF-R-Camcorder haben zwei SDXC-Karten-Steckplätze, Legria HF R28 und Legria HF R26 haben zudem einen internen Speicher mit 32 beziehungsweise 8 GB f¨¹r noch mehr Aufnahmekapazität. Praktisch: Videos können von einer auf die andere Speicherkarte kopiert werden.Legria HF R28 und Legria HF R26 ermöglichen zudem die interne Konvertierung von HD- Videoinhalten in webtaugliche SD-Dateien. Das komplett neu gestaltete original Canon-HD-10fach optischen Zoomobjektiv weist eine schnelle, geräuscharme und präzise Fokussierung sowie minimale Verzeichnung und eine hohe Lichtstärke bis 1:1,8 auf. Die Irisblende mit sechs Lamellen sorgt f¨¹r eine interessante Hintergrundunschärfe. Effizient minimiert ein optischer Bildstabilisator mit mehreren Modi Verwacklungen: «DynamikIS» ist ideal in Situationen, in denen sich der Filmer bewegt, «Powered IS» empfiehlt sich bei extrem langer Brennweite.Die neuen Legria HF-M-Camcorder haben ein neues integriertes Mikrofon mit modernen Audiofunktionen. Die Mikrofon-Komponenten erhöhen die Empfindlichkeit so, dass auch bei ruhigen Szenen kaum Hintergrundgeräusche zu hören sind. In der Mikro-Einstellung «Zoom» wird die Lautstärke beim Zoomen automatisch entsprechend der Brennweite angepasst. Eine Equalizer-Funktion optimiert die Audiosignale und verbessert so die Klangqualität durch Anpassung an Motiv, Szene oder Inhalt. Das Modell Legria HF M41 bietet zusätzliche Flexibilität durch die Kompatibilität mit dem neuen optional erhältlichen Wireless-Mikrofon WM-V1: Dieses externe Mikrofon liefert kabellos Audioaufnahmen auf bis zu 50 Meter Entfernung und kann zur bidirektionalen Kommunikation eingesetzt werden.


Der intelligente Auto-Modus unterscheidet 38 Aufnahmesituationen und wählt die am besten geeigneten Einstellungen. F¨¹r Nahaufnahmen kommt man mit der neuen Telemakro-Funktion auch im Telebereich bis auf 40 Zentimeter an die Motive heran. Auch die Gesichtserkennung f¨¹r die richtige Schärfe und Belichtung von Gesichtern und f¨¹r einfach tolle Personenaufnahmen ist integriert. Der Highspeed Autofokus Instant-AF sorgt mit zwei unterschiedlichen AF-Systemen f¨¹r eine extrem schnelle und dennoch präzise automatische Fokussierung.F¨¹r den perfekten Dreh von Geschichten, die das Leben schreibt, gibt es im Camcorder den Story-Creator. Diese «Drehbuchvorlagen» sind kreativ, unkompliziert und leicht umzusetzen.



Das 7,5 cm (3,0 Zoll) grosse Touch-LCD ermöglicht den Zugriff auf viele Steueroptionen, darunter auch «Dekoration per Touch-LCD» zum Ausschm¨¹cken von Videos, Hinzuf¨¹gen von Animationen, Effekten, Bildern und Textbotschaften in Echtzeit.F¨¹r den Kino-Flair gibt es die acht neuen Kino-Look-Filter, mit denen man Videos ein neues Aussehen verleiht, z.B. «Lebendig» mit kräftigeren Farben f¨¹r eine höhere Intensität, «Traum» mit einer Weichzeichnung f¨¹r eine zauberhafte, leicht verträumte Wirkung und «Cool» f¨¹r eine k¨¹hle, futuristisch anmutende Atmosphäre, fast wie in einem Science-Fiction-Film, stehen auf Knopfdruck zur Verf¨¹gung.Der Legria HF M41 hat ausserdem einen 0,61 cm (0,24 Zoll) grossen Farbsucher mit 100-%-Bildfeld: Diese Alternative zum Display empfiehlt sich bei Aussenaufnahmen an hellen Tagen oder Innenaufnahmen in schwach beleuchteten Räumen.


Jeweils zwei SDXC-Speicherkarten-Steckplätze sorgen bei den HF-M-Modellen f¨¹r hohe Aufnahmekapazität. Ist die Funktion «Relay Recording» aktiviert, wird die laufende Aufzeichnung automatisch auf der zweiten Karte fortgesetzt, sobald der interne Speicher oder die erste Speicherkarte voll ist. Legria HF M41 und Legria HF M46 haben zusätzlich einen internen Speicher mit 32 GB (HF M41) beziehungsweise 16 GB (HF M46).HD-Videos können direkt im Camcorder auf webtaugliche Standardauflösung (SD) konvertiert werden. Die Benutzeroberfläche der Camcorder beinhaltet einen speziellen Eye-Fi-Bereich mit „Eye-Fi-connected¡°-Funktionen. Herzst¨¹ck des neuen Legria HF-G10 ist der aus den professionellen Canon-Camcordern bekannte HD-CMOS-Pro-Sensor. Die Pixelzahl des 1/3-Typ Canon-HD-CMOS- Pro-Sensors ist mit 1080 x 1920 Pixel auf 2,07 Megapixeln reduziert, die Pixel selbst sind aber grösser und nehmen deshalb mehr Licht auf. Der Sensor weist gegen¨¹ber CMOS-Sensoren fr¨¹herer Canon-Camcorder eine etwa 2,6 mal so grosse Fläche auf. Dadurch erhöht sich auch die Lichtaufnahme, was wiederum die Low-Light-Leistung steigert, den Dynamikbereich erweitert, feinere Farbtonabstufungen ermöglicht und eine allgemein höhere Bildqualität bringt. Der Sensor ist f¨¹r die Full-HD-Aufzeichnung von gestochen scharfen AVCHD-Aufnahmen mit einer Datenrate von 24 Mbps ausgelegt.



Das hochwertige HD-Kamerasystem sorgt mit vielen Technologien f¨¹r die Flexibilität, die erfahrene Filmer schätzen; Pluspunkte sammelt das kompakte, besonders lichtstarke Canon-HD-Weitwinkelobjektiv.Mit 30,4mm Weitwinkel und 10-fach Zoom ausgestattet ist das Objektiv auf vielfältige Einsatzgebiete ausgelegt. Fino al 27 novembre potrete ammirare alla Triennale di Milano i 10 progetti migliori del prestigioso Samsung Young Design Award. La mostra inaugurata da Giorgia Surina, madrina della serata, ¨¨ visionabile gratuitamente per tutti. Premiati in modo consistente i primi 4 progetti il cui tema di partenza era "New Electronics for New Families". Annunciato anche il tema per il 2012 "Electronics and Urban Mobility".Si ¨¨ svolta la premiazione dei vincitori della 5a edizione del Samsung Young Design Award, il concorso creato da Samsung Electronics Italia e patrocinato da ADI (Associazione Design Industriale) dedicato agli studenti di Design, nonch¨¦ per la prima volta ai giovani Designer laureati da meno di 3 anni. Una madrina d¡¯eccezione, Giorgia Surina, per questa serata che ha anche inaugurato l¡¯apertura della mostra dove saranno visibili i 10 migliori progetti.



Il tema di quest¡¯anno, ¡°New Electronics for New Families¡±, ha sfidato i partecipanti su un terreno quanto mai attuale, con l¡¯obiettivo di dare vita a dispositivi tecnologici innovativi e inaspettati in grado di soddisfare i bisogni delle famiglie di oggi, in una societ¨¤ che sta vivendo cambiamenti profondi e ha portato a un¡¯evoluzione e a una ridefinizione del concetto stesso di famiglia.Premiati i 4 migliori progetti. Ad aggiudicarsi il Grand Jury Award di 15.000 euro ¨¨ il Gruppo Piramide con il progetto Flick-it, una sorta di post-it moderno e digitale per lasciare messaggi grafici o audiovisivi.A seguire il Gold Award di 5.000 euro va al progetto Mnemosyne, una fotocamera a forma di ciondolo che cattura suoni e panorami. Il Silver Award di 3.000 euro va al team Pianobi con il progetto Izme, un piccolo dispositivo portatile che segnala la presenza di una persona cara nelle vicinanze e guida l¡¯utente verso il punto d¡¯incontro con un proprio caro dotato dello stesso dispositivo.


Infine il Bronz Award da 2.000 euro va al progetto Synergy, che ha creato un braccialetto per adulto e bambino che permette di ritrovarsi se ci si perde nella folla aiutandovi tramite indicazioni a ricongiungervi. Secondo le rilevazioni di GfK nel periodo gennaio-maggio 2008 prosegue il trend negativo del mercato. Male la telefonia, il video e l¡¯audio, bene l¡¯It, la fotografia digitale e i videogochi Olimpiadi non hanno aiutato pi¨´ di tanto il comparto video: positivo nei primi tre mesi dell¡¯anno, ha invertito la tendenza. Un timido +6% dei Tv Lcd non ¨¨ riuscito a bilanciare il segno negativo di tutti gli altri prodotti (Plasma Tv, Tv Crt, Camcorder, Dvd player e recorder, decoder). Il comparto chiude quindi in negativo (-4%).In diminuzione anche il mercato dell¡¯audio statico (-6%) e quello Forse tra tutti i dati rilevati dalla pi¨´ recente indagine di GfK Marketing Services Italia sui beni durevoli di consumo, effettuata da gennaio a maggio 2008, quello che pi¨´ colpisce ¨¨ il sensibile calo del settore della telefonia. E solo in parte riesce a essere compensato dalla crescita degli smartphone, i telefonini avanzati come l¡¯iPhone. Si tratta infatti di un settore ancora limitato e, nonostante i l prezzo medio dei prodotti sia piuttosto elevato, non pu¨° dare un grande apporto.



Secondo i dati Gfk, la Consumer Electronics chiude i primi cinque mesi dell¡¯anno con un -1%. Gli Europei di calcio e le dell¡¯audio portatile (-13%). Calo pi¨´ contenuto (-5%) per il comparto car: quasi tutti i prodotti di questo settore registrano tassi di flessione a due cifre; limitano i danni la Car Navigation (-8) e la Car Vision (-14).

Chiudono con il segno meno anche i lettori digitali portatili Mp3/Mpeg4 (-20) che per tutto il 2007 erano invece stati la colonna portante delle vendite del comparto.

L¡¯unico segnale positivo arriva dagli accessori, costituiti principalmente da cuffie e telecomandi (+24%)..Nel settore dei supporti di memoria permangono positive le Usb Memory (+10%), che per¨° non riescono a risollevare le sorti del segmento (-2%).


Per contro, si mantiene positivo il mercato della fotografia digitale. ¡°Il parco utenti ¨¨ lontano dall¡¯essere saturo ¨C afferma Antonio Besana, direttore commerciale Gfk Ms Italia ¨C e la crescita del mercato a valore viene sostenuta da un rinnovato sviluppo del segmento delle reflex digitali, dalla continua innovazione di prodotto, da gamme pi¨´ ampie che coprono tutte le fasce di prezzo e da un¡¯offerta pi¨´ vasta sia di marche sia di modelli¡±.In questo panorama poco incoraggiante la mosca bianca ¨¨ il mercato It, anche se mostra un lieve rallentamento nel tasso di crescita (+10% nei primi cinque mesi e +8% a maggio 2008). L¡¯ hardware in maggio ¨¨ stato sostenuto dai notebook (+13) e dall¡¯image display (le cornici digitali), segmento ancora piccolo per dimensioni ma in forte crescita (raddoppio delle vendite rispetto a maggio 2007). Le periferiche (+2% a maggio) sono legate alla buona performance di multifunzione (+20%) e scanner (+13%). Continua la crescita delle cartucce per stampanti (+12%) e dei software (+6%). Positiva l¡¯evoluzione di dispositivi e accessori (+43%) ad eccezione dei masterizzatori (-28%). Mercato ancora piccolo ma esplosivo quello delle Communication Card (schede di connessione a Internet per Pc, +300%) sostenuto da promozioni e investimenti in comunicazione da parte dei gestori di telefonia mobile, e le console per giochi (+50%).

Si, como otros, apostabas por ser competitivo como tablet con un dispositivo ligero, delgado y con micros que no necesitaran apenas ventilaci¨®n te quedabas corto de potencia, con una m¨¢quina que lastraba la productividad.


Microsoft con la gama Pro siempre ha dado prioridad al lado port¨¢til, mientras atacaban a la gama tablet con la versi¨®n Surface sin apellidos o con la original RT. Es as¨ª como lo vienen presentando y con quienes se comparan en el mercado, por muchos debates que queramos tener sobre si fue antes el huevo (port¨¢til) o la gallina (tablet).
El caso es que con Pro 4 Microsoft ha conseguido unas dimensiones en cuanto a grosor (apenas 8.4 mm) y peso (entre los 766 y los 786 gramos seg¨²n la configuraci¨®n, sin contar la Type Cover) que rompen esta necesidad de elegir: como dispositivo la nueva Surface Pro es un estupendo port¨¢til para llevar a todos lados, no s¨®lo ligero y fino, es un cacharro realmente bien diseñado; como tablet encaja bastante bien en un concepto de tablet grande con m¨¢s pretensiones que la de ser pantalla de consumo.


La versi¨®n que hemos analizado (con un micro i5 y ocho gigas de RAM) ha costado mucho llevarla a un cierto calentamiento, pero cuando lo hemos logrado s¨ª que ha resultado algo inc¨®modo. Microsoft apunta a un sistema de refrigeraci¨®n h¨ªbrido: uno pasivo que se encargar de repartir el calor por todo el chasis cuando no ponemos la CPU al m¨¢ximo y con el que se consigue mucho menos ruido; otro activo que se enciende cuando se llega a cierto nivel de calor, m¨¢s ruidoso y que s¨®lo hemos conseguido notar en videojuegos y, eso s¨ª, cuando alg¨²n proceso de Windows se ha quedado atascado consumiendo recursos.En esto hay una parte que tenemos que reconocer a Intel el trabajo con Skylake y a Microsoft por saber esperar y saltarse Broadwell, buena decisi¨®n.


Continua siendo marca de la casa el cada vez m¨¢s imitado kickstand, que con su flexibilidad de ¨¢ngulos soportados consigue que nos podamos olvidar de perder ¨¢ngulos de trabajo frente a un port¨¢til de factor forma tradicional. Si te toca trabajar viajando en tren o avi¨®n lo agradecer¨¢s mucho frente a propuestas que limitan a una ¨²nica posici¨®n de ¨¢ngulo de pantalla.
Tenemos tambi¨¦n el lateral magn¨¦tico, para emparejar el l¨¢piz al dispositivo minimizando en parte la p¨¦rdida del mismo... y digo en parte porque si no hay oquedad hay que asumir que el l¨¢piz mejor llevarlo a buen recaudo porque siempre tendremos la posibilidad de que por cualquier roce imprevisto caiga. Hay un puerto USB 3.0 (nada de Type C), que en ocasiones se queda corto, al menos frente a lo que ofrece el t¨ªpico port¨¢til.



LA PANTALLA DEL NUEVO SURFACE PRO 4 ES FÁCIL DE RESUMIR: UNA PASADA. POR BRILLO, CONTRASTE, FIDELIDAD DE COLOR Y RESOLUCIÓN

Un ¨²ltimo apunte, el conector propietario tiene la costumbre de desprenderse cuando movemos el dispositivo con cierta facilidad, as¨ª que dueños de un Surface Pro 4: vigilen bien que luego se llevan la sorpresa al creer que estaban cargando y no. Eso s¨ª, que en el cargador se incluya una salida para cargar por USB cualquier m¨®vil o similar sigue siendo un acierto tan claro que no entiendo como el resto de la industria no lo est¨¢ copiando ya.


La pantalla del nuevo Surface Pro 4 es f¨¢cil de resumir: una pasada. Por brillo, contraste, fidelidad de color y resoluci¨®n. Los blancos realmente blancos, los negros muy negros, una gran experiencia sin perderse en esa tendencia a la saturaci¨®n.MI ÚNICA DUDA RESPECTO A LA PANTALLA ES SI ES DEMASIADO BUENA: UNA RESOLUCIÓN MENOR Y MENOS PÍXELES POR PULGADAS NOS HUBIERAN LLEVADO A MENOS CONSUMO Y CREO QUE MUCHOS USUARIOS LO HUBIÉSEMOS PREFERIDO

Uno de los aspectos mejor trabajados en el diseño del producto es la superficie de pantalla en este tamaño de dispositivo. 12.3 pulgadas, un poco m¨¢s grande que la de su antecesor, que nos deja un marco con el tamaño perfecto para funcionar bien como tablet: cuando lo tenemos sujeto con una mano necesitamos un m¨ªnimo de grosor para que ese agarrar no interfiera en la experiencia t¨¢ctil.


Nos hemos ido con el Pro 4 a una resoluci¨®n de 2736x1824 mientras que el ratio es 3:2 (ojo, para el consumo multimedia no es precisamente el m¨¢s indicado) y a una densidad de 267 p¨ªxeles por pulgada. Mi ¨²nica duda es si la pantalla es demasiado buena: una resoluci¨®n menor y menos p¨ªxeles por pulgadas nos hubieran llevado a menos consumo y creo que muchos usuarios lo hubi¨¦semos preferido.
Una vez encendido nos encontramos son Windows 10, del que hemos hablado tanto en an¨¢lisis a fondo (aqu¨ª me atrever¨ªa a hablar de an¨¢lisis a fond¨ªsimo) y en la experiencia tras un mes de uso que poco cabe añadir: parece un sistema diseñado ex profeso para la filosof¨ªa Surface Pro, primero port¨¢til y actor secundario tablet.


Puestos a trabajar con el Surface Pro 4 lo primero que hay que asumir es que este dispositivo no tiene sentido sin su complemento por excelencia: la type cover.Mucho ha mejorado el teclado, ahora la respuesta es muy buena, hay espacio entre las teclas y mantienen las dos posiciones (plano y con cierta inclinaci¨®n). Para escribir un gran paso que coloca a la Pro 4 al nivel de port¨¢tiles de gama alta de tamaño similar, aunque sin mesa donde apoyarlo sigue perdiendo un poco cuando lo tenemos sobre las piernas y toca trabajar de esa forma.
Tambi¨¦n hab¨ªa mucho que probar ante el anuncio de que el trackpad es m¨¢s grande y con mejor respuesta, a lo que sumamos los gestos en Windows 10 (alguno no lo he conseguido reproducir). El resultado, tiene raz¨®n Microsoft, es una mejora apreciable respecto a lo que hab¨ªan hecho hasta ahora pero.... siguen un peldaño por debajo del trackpad de un port¨¢til de gama alta y dos por debajo de quien mejor hacer esto en el sector: Apple.


LA EVALUACIÓN DE LA EXPERIENCIA CON EL INTERFAZ HACIA EL DISPOSITIVO SI TENEMOS EN CUENTA TODAS LAS POSIBILIDADES ES DE NOTABLE ALTO: SÓLO SI UNO QUIERE PRIORIZAR DE FORMA ABSOLUTA EL TRACKPAD DEBERÍA PENALIZAR AL SURFACE PRO 4

Sin embargo toca romper una lanza por Surface, Windows 10 y el la idea de interfaz t¨¢ctil. Conforme uno se hace a ellos empieza a descubrir que hay muchos contextos en los que lo mejor es un mezcla de uso de trackpad y uso t¨¢ctil del dispositivo. Cierto que en el modo cl¨¢sico de Windows 10 los elementos suelen ser muy pequeños, diseñados para una interacci¨®n con rat¨®n o trackpad, pero hay muchos contextos en los que la parte t¨¢ctil tiene sentido y mejora la experiencia: desde el scroll al navegar una web hasta el modo de tablet de Windows 10.



Por tanto, la evaluaci¨®n de la experiencia con el interfaz hacia el dispositivo si tenemos en cuenta todas las posibilidades es de notable alto: s¨®lo si uno quiere priorizar de forma absoluta el trackpad deber¨ªa penalizar al Surface Pro 4.
Por supuesto no podemos olvidarnos del l¨¢piz. En su aspecto funcional fundamental - escribir y dibujar - sigue siendo una virguer¨ªa: han aumentado los niveles de presi¨®n que detecta hasta 1024 y mantienen la apuesta por la tecnolog¨ªa N-Trig (respecto a los antiguos Wacom lo que se consigue es llevar m¨¢s tecnolog¨ªa al l¨¢piz y eliminar de la pantalla, algo importante de cara al grosor).Lo m¨¢s interesante en todo caso con el nuevo l¨¢piz est¨¢ en la goma que añade nuevos m¨¦todos de interacci¨®n: un click y se enciende OneNote, dos clicks y hace captura de pantalla y la mete como nota en OneNote, tres clicks y aparece Cortana. Aunque uno se ha entregado a los brazos de OneNote (en mi opini¨®n muy superior a Evernote a d¨ªa de hoy), en el camino de Microsoft de cada vez mayor integraci¨®n con sus servicios cabe anotar que mejora la experiencia pero araña un poco m¨¢s al ecosistema.


Tambi¨¦n hemos probado el dock, algo que en un producto como el Surface Pro 4 tiene todo el sentido y que lo diferencia de otras propuestas del tipo tablet para trabajar. Con la potencia de dispositivo como este (obviando quiz¨¢s la versi¨®n con intel core m3), hay muchos perfiles de usuario que no van a necesitar m¨¢s en el puesto de trabajo: en estos casos el dock que Microsoft ha preparado cumple a la perfecci¨®n ofreciendo todos los puertos que podemos necesitar. No es inal¨¢mbrico como el dock de HP (mi favorito de la industria) y tiene un conector propietario al que han bautizado con el original nombre de Surface Connect.

Vendida inicialmente como la tecnolog¨ªa que nos ayudar¨ªa con el pago sin contacto, la conectividad NFC se ha consolidado en la actualidad en el mundo de los gadgets como un elemento para emparejamiento de equipos de forma sencilla y directa. Los accesorios son los m¨¢s beneficiados, y no hay que subestimar d¨®nde se coloca uno de estos chips.Intel por ejemplo quiere que los llevemos en los port¨¢tiles, como el Dell XPS 12 donde Pocket-Lint nos enseña c¨®mo funciona Masterpass.En el reci¨¦n concluido Intel Developers Forum, una de las demostraciones consist¨ªa en la realizaci¨®n de un pago electr¨®nico con solo colocar la tarjeta de cr¨¦dito sobre la zona NFC de un port¨¢til. Una vez identificados en la tienda y en nuestro port¨¢til, la simple colocaci¨®n de la tarjeta serv¨ªa para completar la transacci¨®n con seguridad, pues el sistema comprueba en todo momento que tarjeta, usuario del ordenador y usuario identificado en el servicio/tienda son el mismo.


El sistema Masterpass tambi¨¦n se encarga de reconocernos y completar los datos personales de la compra, por no hablar no no tener que introducir el n¨²mero de tarjeta, la fecha de caducidad ... s¨ª, esos pequeños pasos que, al menos a mi, a veces hacen que desista de una compra online que no tenga por ejemplo Paypal.Ahora mismo hay un segundo paso consistente en un correo electr¨®nico de confirmaci¨®n de la transacci¨®n, pero se eliminar¨¢. Y en cuanto a la compatibilidad, ya se pueden realizar este tipo de pagos si tenemos el equipo adecuado (AMD se unir¨¢ en breve, no es algo exclusivo de chips Intel, nuestro login en el sistema y ganas de gastar claro.Muchos recordar¨¦is el auge de las tarjetas gr¨¢ficas externas, ocurrido hace no muchos años. No era blanco y negro, y de hecho hace menos de diez años que comenz¨® un boom con este tipo de accesorios. Inicialmente para port¨¢tiles y motivadas por la necesidad de ese plus de rendimiento gr¨¢fico que a veces es necesario.


Esta necesidad contin¨²a existiendo y, de hecho, las tarjetas gr¨¢ficas externas han continuado desarroll¨¢ndose, generalmente con un acierto escaso pero siempre con la intenci¨®n de revitalizar un mercado que ha variado mucho. Y hoy son nuestras protagonistas: las tarjetas gr¨¢ficas externas, entre la utop¨ªa y la realidad con una dosis de bricolaje.Corr¨ªa el año 2008 cuando habl¨¢bamos de ellas, por entonces como unos perif¨¦ricos que los diferentes fabricantes estaban preparando para asaltar al mundo gaming. En aquella ¨¦poca las GPU de los port¨¢tiles eran dedicadas y m¨¢s o menos pod¨ªan defenderse con los videojuegos, o eran integradas y entonces no val¨ªan para... nada.


Las gr¨¢ficas externas supon¨ªan un halo de esperanza para la comunidad gaming que por entonces prefer¨ªa el juego en port¨¢til. Los hab¨ªa por entonces, y los sigue habiendo ahora. Algo tan sencillo como un accesorio que conect¨¢bamos al ordenador, y entonces pod¨ªamos disfrutar de los videojuegos. Tan sencillo como esto.
Hubo muchos intentos de diferentes fabricantes como ASUS, Acer o Fujitsu, y todos con un com¨²n denominador: hacer que los port¨¢tiles, aunque no fuesen para jugar, permitiesen hacerlo en los momentos en los que se requiriese.El objetivo era claro y muy atractivo para los usuarios, pero la realidad es que estos artilugios nunca terminaron de cuajar en el mercado. Pocos modelos disponibles, con compatibilidad muy limitada y, por si fuera poco, precios tremendamente elevados que supusieron un h¨¢ndicap a la hora de llegar a la compra del producto.


Hemos estado hablando de un per¨ªodo relativamente lejano en el tiempo, casi diez años atr¨¢s. Desde entonces los fabricantes han continuado desarrollando tarjetas gr¨¢ficas externas que, sin ser su producto estrella.En los años m¨¢s recientes, y a¨²n disponibles en muchos distribuidores, hemos visto productos de Alienware o el MSI GS30 Ghost, en ambos casos productos muy espec¨ªficos. Como referencia, el GS30 (13.3 pulgadas, Core i7, 8 GB RAM, SSD 256 GB) se vende en PC Componentes por 1.700 euros y la caja de Alienware por 325 euros, y tanto uno como el otro no incluyen la tarjeta gr¨¢fica que deberemos comprar por separado.



Este tipo de productos est¨¢n enfocados a un perfil de usuario muy concreto, y que est¨¦ dispuesto a realizar un fuerte desembolso econ¨®mico que muchas veces supera al coste de un port¨¢til igual de potente, o m¨¢s. Desde hace casi diez años no han cesado de llegar nuevos productos y este mercado sigue movi¨¦ndose, pero muy t¨ªmidamente, con ciertas innovaciones y movimientos de algunas empresas, pero son puntuales y comedidos, limitados a s¨®lo algunos modelos, caros y que, m¨¢s en general, no logran cautivar a los usuarios.Sin embargo, el p¨²blico demanda tarjetas gr¨¢ficas externas, y como ve ciertas desventajas en lo que existe en el mercado pues se dedica a montar sus modelos. El bricolaje es un punto clave, y sobre ¨¦l pasamos a hablar.


Aqu¨ª entramos en un terreno fangoso, porque con la palabra bricolaje nos referimos a que tendr¨¢s que hacer buena parte del trabajo por tu propia cuenta. Y no todo el mundo sabe, ni puede, ni quiere hacerlo.Pero la realidad es que existen m¨²ltiples tutoriales que te ayudan a montarte tu propia tarjeta gr¨¢fica externa, como este de LifeHacker de 2011, esta gu¨ªa de NotebookCheck de 2014 o esta otra de BlenderNation de 2015, basada en v¨ªdeo. Incluso hay un hilo en Reddit que trata el tema con el que llegamos a estas 1.193 p¨¢ginas de comentarios en Notebook Review.Hay movimiento por parte de la comunidad, y el com¨²n denominador de todas estas iniciativas es que se requiere de unos conocimientos m¨ªnimos en la materia. Conocer interfaces y c¨®mo funcionan a nivel el¨¦ctrico, as¨ª como por supuesto el funcionamiento de un ordenador. A algunos usuarios les ha funcionado el invento, a otros no.


Tomemos como ejemplo el siguiente v¨ªdeo, que muestra c¨®mo funciona un adaptador del que os hablaremos m¨¢s adelante:Conectar el adaptador a un mini-PCI Express del port¨¢til. El v¨ªdeo menciona que en algunos casos s¨®lo existe una de estas conexiones en el port¨¢til y que est¨¢n ocupadas, con lo que es necesario modificar la configuraci¨®n original del equipo.

Conectar la tarjeta gr¨¢fica en el PCI-Express del adaptador (habitualmente tendremos que retirar alguna tapa del equipo, no es un puerto externo), y el monitor a esta tarjeta gr¨¢fica.

Lo m¨¢s habitual ser¨¢ que la tarjeta gr¨¢fica requiera energ¨ªa adicional, que deberemos proporcionar a partir de una fuente de alimentaci¨®n externa que permita sacar los conectores de 6 u 8 pines.

Si toda la configuraci¨®n es correcta, el sistema - habitualmente Windows, aunque algunos tambi¨¦n lo han intentado en Mac - deber¨¢ reconocer la tarjeta conectada y podremos iniciar la instalaci¨®n de los controladores.

Como veis, se requieren los siguientes componentes:


El adaptador de marras que hace de 'puente' entre la gr¨¢fica externa y el port¨¢til. Este de BangGood vale 45 euros y es una de las opciones mejor valoradas y con mejor precio que he encontrado.

Un port¨¢til compatible (con al menos un mPCIe libre).

Una tarjeta gr¨¢fica dedicada de cierta potencia que pueda suponer una diferencia respecto de la del port¨¢til.

En la mayor¨ªa de los casos, una fuente de alimentaci¨®n externa.

Monitor, otros cables y algo de suerte para que el conjunto sea compatible.

De forma opcional, otro tipo de elementos visuales y est¨¦ticos tales como caja, luces u otros.

Y aqu¨ª est¨¢ uno de los problemas: la compatibilidad no es oficial, y todos estos mods carecen de garant¨ªa de funcionamiento hasta tal punto que muchos ni siquiera llegan a arrancar. En cierto sentido ser¨¢ necesario arriesgarse, y lo mejor para reducir problemas y malos funcionamientos ser¨¢ comprobar qu¨¦ es lo que le ha funcionado a la comunidad, a otros usuarios. El primer paso est¨¢ a menos de 50 euros de distancia con este accesorio, aunque con muchas pegas para ponerlo en marcha.

En cuanto a los precios por los que podremos llegar a tener estas piezas artesanales, var¨ªan enormemente. Desde los 45 euros que cuesta el adaptador hasta los varios cientos si lo queremos dejar cuco, con su caja, sus luces y dem¨¢s. El l¨ªmite es casi el que queramos.A mayores la tarjeta gr¨¢fica externa, claro, que debe comprarse por separado. Y una nueva inversi¨®n que nos permite ampliar el rango de precios entre 100 y 700, 800 o m¨¢s euros, siempre seg¨²n lo que deseemos.


M¨¢s all¨¢ de los intentos de los modders con su bricolaje tecnol¨®gico, las tarjetas gr¨¢ficas externas no terminan de arrancar. Y precisamente como hay
Y uno de estos cambios est¨¢ en los laboratorios, prepar¨¢ndose para dar el salto en un futuro a medio plazo. PCI-SIG, el grupo de desarrollo del est¨¢ndar PCI, est¨¢ preparando lo que denominan PCI Express OCuLink, una interfaz para conexi¨®n de gr¨¢ficas externas a un PC. EN EL FUTURO, OCULINK ES LA MAYOR ESPERANZA QUE TIENEN LAS TARJETAS GRÁFICAS EXTERNAS

OCuLink - ya hablamos de sus preparativos en 2012 - es un proyecto del que a¨²n se conocen pocos detalles, pero para el que jugar¨¢ un importante papel la compatibilidad con Thunderbolt con el que buscar¨¢ la universalidad del producto final. En otras palabras, que cualquier port¨¢til pueda beneficiarse de este accesorio. Los detalles, como siempre, tendr¨¢n que esperar.

Productos comerciales hoy en d¨ªa hay muy pocos, entre ellos los de Alienware o el de MSI, y est¨¢n enfocados a perfiles de usuario muy concretos que est¨¦n dispuestos a realizar fuertes desembolsos. Sin embargo, el desarrollo de OCuLink realza las expectativas para abaratar costes en base a universalizar la tecnolog¨ªa, poni¨¦ndola a disposici¨®n de los fabricantes para que estos diseñen sus productos definitivos.


Adem¨¢s de OCuLink, la otra gran v¨ªa de desarrollo que existe en la actualidad la est¨¢ manejando Intel, se basa en Thunderbolt 3 y algo han mostrado de ella en la presentaci¨®n de la interfaz, el pasado mes de junio. Una tarjeta gr¨¢fica externa muy sencilla de instalar (apenas unas pocas conexiones, y ya) pero que, como OCuLink, a¨²n est¨¢ en desarrollo. Pretenden dar m¨¢s informaci¨®n a lo largo de 2016:M¨¢s all¨¢ de accesorios comerciales sencillos, la soluci¨®n real en la actualidad es el bricolaje. A d¨ªa de hoy las tarjetas gr¨¢ficas externas son una utop¨ªa para el gran p¨²blico, que con la salvedad de OCuLink - recuerdo, un desarrollo actual que a¨²n tendr¨¢ que evolucionar y ya veremos c¨®mo termina - y lo que Intel tenga entre manos, apenas tienen productos en el mercado. El futuro, ya se ver¨¢.


Hace unos tres años me compr¨¦ la primera versi¨®n del Surface Pro. Ya lo hab¨ªa probado gracias al trabajo en Xataka, conoc¨ªa las limitaciones y numerosos compromisos del producto, pero estaba enganchado a las ideas detr¨¢s de Surface: la convergencia, el 2 en 1, la creaci¨®n de una categor¨ªa nueva.Ha pasado el tiempo y llega a nuestras manos nada m¨¢s y nada menos que la cuarta iteraci¨®n del Surface Pro. Partiendo de que las novedades respecto a la Pro 3 no suponen un cambio de calado en la propuesta hemos decido apostar por un an¨¢lisis diferente. No tan enfocado en evaluar si es un dispositivo de calidad (lo es, y mucho), sino para qu¨¦ tipo de usuario tiene sentido algo como la Surface Pro 4.

Las expectativas tras conocer esos primeros rumores son muchas, desde luego, pero habr¨¢ que esperar a ver qu¨¦ es lo que Google nos tiene preparado el pr¨®ximo 4 de octubre. Un detalle importante para los impacientes: en The Wall Street Journal ya avisaban que esta plataforma no estar¨ªa preparada realmente hasta 2017, algo que tiene cierto sentido teniendo en cuenta que Android 7.0 acaba de salir al mercado. Puede que en unos d¨ªas conozcamos muchos detalles de Andromeda, pero tambi¨¦n que este proyecto no est¨¦ realmente disponible hasta dentro de un año.Mountain GTM 374G llega al mercado para completar la gama m¨¢s alta de port¨¢tiles de la compañ¨ªa española. Como otros GTM de anteriores generaciones, como el GTM 18, estamos ante un equipo potente y muy completo que satisfar¨¢ a todos los usuarios que busquen ese extra de rendimiento para trabajo o juegos.


Nos plantamos con una pantalla de grandes dimensiones, 17.3 pulgadas 1920x1080 p¨ªxeles, si bien ¨¦sta no es la caracter¨ªstica m¨¢s atractiva. Si miramos en el interior, el procesador Intel Core i7-4700MQ de la ¨²ltima generaci¨®n 'Haswell' y los gr¨¢ficos NVidia GTX 780M con 4 GB de memoria GDDR5 destacan sobre lo dem¨¢s, que no es poco.
Tambi¨¦n hay un muy seductor RAID 0 de dos SSD mSATA de 128 GB (256 GB de almacenamiento disponible) que, seg¨²n Mountain, alcanza los 750 MB/s sin despeinarse, fabricados por Toshiba y con su NAND en 19 nan¨®metros. Para los que busquen una capacidad mayor, Mountain ofrece la posibilidad de añadir un disco duro tradicional de 750 GB sin tocar el RAID 0.


La resoluci¨®n de pantalla de este equipo no era en absoluto despreciable: cont¨¢bamos con un panel de 3.000 x 2.000 p¨ªxeles, pero en Microsoft pasar¨ªan ahora a una pantalla con a¨²n mayor definici¨®n que, eso s¨ª, podr¨¦is utilizar con alg¨²n tipo de escalado para no dejaros los ojos en el intento de tratar de distinguir textos y elementos visuales con esa definici¨®n.Parece que uno de los objetivos de esa renovaci¨®n ser¨ªa competir directamente con otros equipos que se espera que se renueven tambi¨¦n en esa ¨¦poca. Los m¨¢s relevantes, los MacBook Pro que puede que Apple tambi¨¦n lance con nuevas caracter¨ªsticas aprovechando que ese mes celebra su WWDC. Veremos, eso s¨ª, si esta vez hay suerte y es posible encontrar los Surface Book 2 en España: su primera iteraci¨®n sigue sin verse en nuestro pa¨ªs 7 meses despu¨¦s de su lanzamiento.Todos nos hemos encontrado con el boom de los v¨ªdeos y fotos en 360 grados que de un d¨ªa para otro invadieron Facebook y YouTube, esto ha provocado que algunas marcas est¨¦n lanzando c¨¢maras para que cualquier persona pueda grabar contenido en este formato y compartirlo de forma sencilla.

La renovaci¨®n de equipos port¨¢tiles de altas prestaciones de HP es una realidad con la nueva familia de m¨¢quinas HP ZBook, que llega con versiones de 14, 15 y 17 pulgadas, siendo el ZBook 14 un producto destacado por adoptar el formato Ultrabook.Este port¨¢til de hecho es la principal competencia de otra soluci¨®n en esta l¨ªnea: el Dell Precision M3800 que se present¨® hace unas semanas y que tambi¨¦n ofrece m¨¢ximo rendimiento en un diseño realmente destacado. En sus pruebas de febrero lograron insertar pulsaciones en los rat¨®nes y teclados conectados inal¨¢mbricamente con protocolos de radio en vez de tecnolog¨ªa WiFi o Bluetooth utilizando una t¨¦cnica a la que bautizaron como Musejacking. Con ello pudieron descargar malware en los ordenadores de forma remota.Ahora, con su nuevo ataque bautizado como Keysniffer, los investigadores tambi¨¦n han conseguido ser capaces de leer las pulsaciones en el mismo tipo teclados y ratones. Het heeft niet zozeer met de Dongel te maken, maar kan ook te maken hebben met modems in het algemeen. Het kan dus bijvoorbeeld ook via adsl. Zonder dongle is er echter geen mogelijkheid om berichten te sturen naar of te ontvangen van dure sms-diensten.Volgens KPN gaat het om 23 bekende gevallen van klanten waarbij de laptop zou zijn gehackt om toegang te krijgen tot de sms-functie van de Dongel, aldus Van Zijl. Kwaadwillenden kunnen op een eenmaal gekraakte computer misbruik maken van de software op de Dongel om sms'jes te versturen. KPN heeft inmiddels maatregelen genomen om de gekraakte computers van klanten te beschermen tegen verdere acties van de hackers. KPN kwam het misbruik op het spoor toen een bepaalde shortcode, die voor sms-diensten wordt gebruikt, ineens veel berichten kreeg. Ook nam een van de klanten contact op met de provider over dit probleem.


Het standaard deactiveren van de sms-functie van de dongle zou een oplossing zijn om misbruik te voorkomen, maar dat mag niet, aldus Van Zijl. De sms-functie staat standaard aan om extra functionaliteit te bieden en te voldoen aan EU-regelgeving inzake dataroaming. KPN ontkent dat kwaadwillenden op afstand rechtstreeks toegang hebben tot de dongle; dat zou altijd via de laptop moeten verlopen.KPN geeft geen concrete tips om de hack te voorkomen of te kunnen detecteren. De provider verwijst als antwoord op een vraag daarover naar een eigen website over de beveiliging van computers. Vrijdag publiceerde Tweakers.net voor het eerst over de hack, die diverse bedrijven hoge telefoonrekeningen heeft bezorgd. De zaak kwam aan het rollen nadat een getroffene zijn ervaringen op GoT had gezet.


Panasonic toont woensdag een direct methanol-brandstofcel die een laptop twintig uur achter elkaar van stroom kan voorzien. Het apparaat zal echter voorlopig nog niet in de winkel liggen.De nieuwe brandstofcel heeft slechts 200 milliliter methanol nodig om twintig uur lang tussen de 10 en 20 watt aan elektriciteit te leveren. Dat is genoeg om een laptop van stroom te voorzien. De gehele brandstofcel heeft een volume van 270 kubieke centimeter en weegt, exclusief brandstof, circa 320 gram. De cel zal aanstaande woensdag tentoongesteld worden tijdens de Hydrogen Energy Advanced Technology Exhibition 2008 in Japan.Naast deze brandstofcel voor laptops zal Panasonic ook een variant laten zien die is ontwikkeld voor het opladen van gadgets als mp3-spelers en mobiele telefoons. Die oplader is uitgerust met twee usb-aansluitingen en heeft een brandstofcapaciteit van 360 milliliter.



Hoewel beide apparaten deze week tentoongesteld worden, zullen ze voorlopig niet op de markt verschijnen. Panasonic is van plan om pas eind 2012 met dergelijke apparatuur de markt te betreden. Concurrent Toshiba wil al binnen enkele maanden de eerste brandstofcelproducten op de markt zetten, maar worstelt voorlopig nog met overheidsvoorschriften en de vraag hoe de brandstof gedistribueerd moet worden.Dell heeft drie laptops aan zijn zakelijke Latitude E-serie toegevoegd. De E6510 en E6410 zijn respectievelijk een 15,6- en 14,1-model met een Core i5- of een Core i7-cpu. Van het 14,1-model is ook een robuuste variant op de markt gebracht.


Het nieuwe drietal is de tweede generatie van de Latitude E-serie. Dell bracht de eerste Latitude E-modellen eind 2008 uit. De twee mainstreammodellen van de nieuwe serie zijn de E6510 en de E6410. De E6510 heeft een 15,6-scherm met led-backlights. De koper heeft de keuze uit drie resoluties: 1366x768, 1600x900 of de full hd-resolutie van 1920x1080 pixels. Naast mobiele Core i5- en Core i7-dualcores, kan de E6510 ook met krachtigere Core i7-quadcores uit Intels Clarksfield-serie worden uitgerust. De E6410 beschikt over een 14,1-scherm dat 1280x800 of 1440x900 pixels kan tonen en eveneens een led-backlight heeft.
Beide notebooks krijgen maximaal 8GB ddr3-geheugen en kunnen van een hdd met een opslagcapaciteit van 500GB of van een 256GB-sdd worden voorzien. Verder kan de koper volstaan met de geïntegreerde gpu van de Core i-processors, maar hij kan er ook voor kiezen de laptop met een NVS 3100M-gpu van Nvidia uit te rusten.

Wat uiterlijk betreft verschillen de nieuwe modellen niet veel van hun voorgangers, de E6500 en E6400, vertelt Jordi Baggen, brand manager mobility bij Dell. Een verandering is wel dat ze niet in het zwart uitkomen. Naast rood en blauw is voor zilver gekozen. De notebooks hebben zakelijke functionaliteit als fingerprint-readers, tpm's en hardwarematige encryptie. Ook de ssd's zijn van encryptie voorzien. Verder is er de optie om een smartcardreader toe te voegen, die optioneel ook rfid ondersteunt via een lezer aan de onderzijde. Ook aanwezig is een val-sensor, die nu volgens Baggen op het moederbord is geïntegreerd en die bij een val de koppen van een hdd parkeert. De accu's waaruit kan worden gekozen hebben 4, 9 of 12 cellen.


De E6410 komt daarnaast uit in een ATG-variant en bij Dell is dit de aanduiding voor semi-rugged. Deze stevige laptop heeft een robuuste behuizing, die de laptop beschermt tegen stof, vibraties, schokken, hoge of lage temperaturen en vochtigheid. De laptop voldoet door zijn bouw aan de MIL STD 810G-standaard voor bepaalde apparatuur van de Amerikaanse defensie, vertelt Baggen. De E6410 ATG kan ook met een touchscreen worden uitgerust, maar Dell geeft niet de optie een Nvidia-gpu toe te voegen. Tenslotte zijn de modellen voorzien van Dells Latitude On-besturingssysteem, dat snelle toegang tot applicaties als mail en Skype mogelijk maakt en een langere accuduur oplevert. Dell biedt drie varianten aan: een uitgeklede variant die het lezen van mail mogelijk maakt, een versie die alle mogelijkheden zoals Citrix-ondersteuning biedt, maar niet op een eigen chip draait, en de volledige Latitude On-versie die op een ARM-subprocessor draait en daarmee extra zuinig is.


HP heeft een aantal nieuwe notebooks in zijn Elitebook-lijn uitgebracht. Het bedrijf brengt onder meer een Elitebook van minder dan anderhalve kilo en een tablet op de markt.Met de Elitebook 2530p zet HP een klein en met zijn 1,45 kilo een licht laptopje op de markt. De zeer draagbare laptop beschikt over een beeldscherm met een diagonaal van 12,1 inch dat door led's wordt verlicht. Ook de processors van de laptops dragen dankzij hun lv- of ulv-technologie bij aan een lange accuduur. De Elitebook 2730p is een tablet-pc met een dikte van 26mm en een gewicht van 1,7 kilo. De tablet met zijn 12-beeldscherm is optioneel verkrijgbaar met een extra accu die het apparaat gedurende twaalf uur van prik kan voorzien. De derde draagbare pc die een beeldscherm met een beelddiagonaal van twaalf inch heeft, is de Compaq 2230s. Deze compacte laptop weegt 1,65 kilo en is puur op de zakelijke markt gericht.


HP zet nog drie Elitebooks in de markt: de Elitebook 8730w, Elitebook 8530w en Elitebook 8530p zijn speciaal voor de Dreamcolor-beeldschermlijn ontworpen. Beide laptops zijn van Dreamcolor-displays voorzien die realistische, kleurechte beelden weergeven. De 'mobiele werkstations' moeten vooral grafici bekoren, getuige de quadcore-processor, 8GB geheugen en een Quadro FX-videokaart van Nvidia die het 17-beeldscherm aanstuurt. De 15,4 Elitebook 8530w en 8530p hebben een Intel dualcore aan boord, ondersteund door 8GB geheugen. Optioneel kan in de 8530w voor een quadcore-cpu gekozen worden.



Daarnaast heeft HP een kalibratiesetje voor zijn eveneens aangekondigde Dreamcolor LP2480zx-beeldscherm aangekondigd. Dat 24-beeldscherm werd met animatiehuis Dreamworks ontwikkeld en beschikt over led-achtergrondverlichting en de mogelijkheid om 30bits-kleuren weer te geven. De computerfabrikant kondigde nog twee schermen met diagonalen van respectievelijk 22 en 24 aan in de vorm van de LP2275w en LP2475w. De resoluties zijn 1920x1080 voor het 24-exemplaar en 1680x1050 voor het 22-model. Alle genoemde hardware is per direct verkrijgbaar, met uitzondering van de Compaq 2230s, die pas in december verkocht zal worden.Dell heeft zijn XPS 14z-laptop uitgebracht. De notebook heeft een 14-scherm dat is geplaatst in een behuizing die normaal gesproken voor 13,3-notebooks wordt gebruikt. Dell brengt het model eerst uit in China en later in Nederland.


Dell heeft een nieuwe XPS z-laptop aan zijn productlijn toegevoegd. Het model is een kleine variant van de XPS 15z en lijkt wat uiterlijk betreft sterk op dat model. De 14z heeft bijvoorbeeld eveneens een dunne aluminium behuizing en een slotloading dvd-drive. Uit de specificaties die op de Chinese Dell-site staan, valt op te maken dat de dikte van de laptop 23mm en het gewicht 1,98 kilo bedraagt.Dell rust het model uit met een Core i7 2640M of een Core i5 2430M, 4GB geheugen en de GeForce 520M-gpu van Nvidia. Het meest opvallende aan de notebook is de smalle ruimte tussen het paneel en de rand van het scherm. De resolutie van het scherm is 1366x768 pixels.


De laptop heeft in China een startprijs van omgerekend 889 euro. Dat Dell het apparaat eerst in China uitbrengt, toont het toegenomen belang aan van die markt voor de Amerikaanse computerbouwer. Later dit jaar komt de XPS 14z in Nederland uit. De Nederlandse prijs is nog onbekend.Nadat de modellen vorige week al kortstondig op de site van de fabrikant verschenen, heeft Acer nu officieel zijn vier nieuwe dunne laptops in de TimelineX-serie uitgebracht. Alle laptops krijgen Core i3-, Core i5- en Core i7-cpu's.Acer brengt de 1830T, 3820T, 4820T en 5820T met respectievelijk een 11,6-, 13,3-, 14- en 15,6-scherm uit. De schermen van alle modellen zijn van led-backlights voorzien en hebben en een resolutie van 1366x768 pixels. De cpu's waarmee Acer de modellen uitrust, zijn de Core i3, Core i5 en Core i7 van Intel, waaronder de zuinige UM-versies van de Core i5 en i7. De 1830T zal ook met een Core 2 Solo worden geleverd.


De kleinste harde schijf die de laptops krijgen, heeft een opslagcapaciteit van 160GB terwijl de grootste modellen een capaciteit van 640GB bieden. De TimelineX-serie zal over relatief krachtige videokaarten beschikken, hoewel sommige modellen het met de geïntegreerde videochip van de Arrandale-processors moeten doen. Het lichtste model weegt 1,8 kilogram en het zwaarste 2,4 kilo. De laptops zijn niet dunner dan 24 millimeter.
Acer claimt dat de accuduur in combinatie met een zescellige accu op meer dan acht uur ligt, evenveel als waarop de vorige Timeline-generatie kon bogen. De nieuwe TimelineX-machines krijgen gigabit-ethernet, wifi 802.11 b/g/n, hdmi en drie usb-poorten. Bluetooth en een 3g-module zijn optioneel. Over de prijzen en beschikbaarheid in de Benelux is nog weinig bekend, behalve dat de eerste modellen hier pas begin mei arriveren en dat het in eerste instantie om de 14- en 15,6-modellen en mogelijk de 1830T met 11,6-scherm zal gaan. Acer Nederland zet de thin&light-laptops wel volgende week al op zijn site.

Het waterdichte toetsenbord is in ieder geval bestand tegen koffie, aldus Witjas.De Aview is in de loop van juni 2008 verkrijgbaar via de online winkel van het bedrijf voor een bedrag van 295 euro. Rond de zomer zal Advance volgens Witjas ook nog de Redfly-smartphone-companion onder eigen naam uitbrengen. Deze zal voorzien zijn van een 8-scherm en moet waarschijnlijk rond de 550 euro kosten.


De Electronic Frontier Foundation stapt naar het Congres in een poging het doorzoeken van laptops door de douane aan banden te leggen. De privacy-organisatie wil dat de overheid een onderzoek naar de praktijken instelt.Department of Homeland Security-logoDe Electronic Frontier Foundation heeft hiertoe bij de commissie voor Binnenlandse Veiligheid van het Amerikaanse Congres een verzoek ingediend. De Amerikaanse douane onderzoekt vaak laptops en andere elektronische apparatuur die de grens overgaat op kinderporno en andere zaken. Omdat dit wordt gezien als inbreuk op de privacy van reizigers, is hier meermalen tegen geprotesteerd bij de rechtbank. De rechters oordeelden echter dat de douane het recht heeft om bagage te onderzoeken, en dat laptops hier ook onder vallen.


Foto's van de dunne laptop, waarop het Toshiba-logo duidelijk is te herkennen, verschenen deze week op de Vietnamese website vozExpress. De website claimt dat het om de dunste en lichtste 13-laptop tot dusver gaat. Dat die eerste claim waar zou kunnen zijn, blijkt uit de foto. Volgens de site zou de laptop, als voor een ssd wordt gekozen, ongeveer 1 kilo wegen.Misschien wel interessanter dan het formaat en het gewicht, is de vermelding van een secundaire accu. Het zou niet gaan om een gebruikelijke lithium-ionversie, maar om een scib-accu. Dit type accu, dat Toshiba in 2007 al aankondigde, kan binnen vijf minuten tot 90 procent van zijn capaciteit worden opgeladen.


Toshiba zou de laptop in verschillende configuraties gaan leveren. Gebruikers zouden kunnen kiezen uit een Core i7-620, i5-520m of i3-350m, gepaard met 4GB geheugen en een harde schijf of ssd tot 512GB. Een usb 3-dock zou ook tot de mogelijkheden behoren. Volgens vozExpress komt Toshiba binnenkort met een aankondiging en moet de laptop deze zomer uitkomen.Er zouden deze zomer meer dan twee keer zo veel laptopmodellen met AMD-chips op de markt komen als vorig jaar. Met nieuwe, energiezuinige cpu's zou de chipontwerper veel fabrikanten voor zich hebben gewonnen.


Aangezien de rechters niet geneigd waren om het doorzoeken van laptops aan banden te leggen, heeft de burgerrechtenorganisatie zich nu samen met enige tientallen zusterorganisaties gericht tot het Congres. In een open brief vraagt de EFF aan de commissie voor Binnenlandse Veiligheid om hoorzittingen te houden over het doorzoeken van elektronische apparatuur door de douane. De verzoekers beschouwen dit als een schending van de privacy, die in een vrij land niet thuishoort.Ook de Nederlandse douane is onlangs op Schiphol begonnen met een proef om digitale gegevensdragers te onderzoeken. Het doel hiervan is om de smokkel van kinderporno tegen te gaan. Nederlandse rechters hebben zich nog niet uitgelaten over de toelaatbaarheid hiervan.

Samsung voegt komende maand een nieuwe laptop toe aan zijn P-lijn van zakelijke modellen. De P580 heeft een mat 15,6-scherm, wordt geleverd met Intels Core i5-processor en bevat geluidsreductie-technologie voor stille werking.



De P580 heeft een mat scherm met een diagonaal van 15,6, een resolutie van 1366x768 pixels en een led-backlight. Samsung stopt maximaal 4GB ddr3-geheugen in de modellen. De gpu is de Nvidia GeForce 330M en naast modellen met Intels Core i5-cpu's komen er ook Core i3-varianten.Er zijn vier usb 2.0-poorten, waarvan er een wordt gedeeld met een esata-aansluiting. Ook ondersteunt de laptop sleep&charge bij de usb-poorten, zodat apparatuur kan worden opgeladen terwijl de notebook uitstaat. Daarnaast is voorzien in hdmi en bluetooth 2.1 + edr-connectiviteit en ondersteuning voor wifi-n.De P580 biedt verder typische zakelijke functionaliteit als een valsensor, die ervoor zorgt dat de koppen van de hdd bij een val worden vastgezet. Ook noemt Samsung de aanwezigheid van geluidsreductie-technologie, maar details hierover ontbreken.


Het model heeft een full-qwerty-toetsenbord, inclusief numeriek gedeelte. Het keyboard is van het type dat Samsung ook bij zijn X-serie van thin&lights gebruikt. Aan de onderzijde zit nog een aansluiting voor een dockingstation en een indicator voor de resterende accutijd. In april komt de notebook op de Nederlandse markt. De prijs van het model is nog onbekend.Samsung introduceerde in Londen nieuwe Q-modellen met 13,3-, 14- en 15,6-schermen. Daarvan komen de Q330 en Q530 met respectievelijk 13,3- en 15,6-schermen begin juli naar Nederland. De Nederlandse specificaties zijn nog niet bekend, maar in Groot-Brittannië bevatten de geïntroduceerde modellen een Core i3-350M met een kloksnelheid van 2,26GHz en een beeldscherm met een resolutie van 1366x768 pixels.


De Q-laptops zijn 27mm dik en de Q330 en Q530 wegen respectievelijk 1,96 en 2,33 kilogram. Daarnaast hebben ze een dvd-brander, drie usb 2.0-poorten en een accu met 6 cellen, waarmee de laptops het vijf uur zouden uithouden. De Q530 krijgt een GeForce GT 330M, maar de Q330 moet het met de geïntegreerde videochip van de Core i3 doen. De laptops zijn van geborsteld aluminium en de combinatie van de zilverkleurige behuizing en een zwart chiclet-toetsenbord leidt ertoe dat de vergelijking met de MacBook Pro van Apple snel is gemaakt.
Verder heeft Samsung de P580 geïntroduceerd. Deze zakelijke laptop heeft een mat 15,6-scherm met een resolutie van 1366x768 pixels. De cpu is de Intel Core i5-430M met een kloksnelheid van 2,26GHz en de fabrikant levert het model met twee reepjes van 2GB ddr3-geheugen en een hdd van 320GB. De laptop heeft een full-qwerty-toetsenbord, inclusief numeriek gedeelte. Daarnaast zijn er zijn vier usb 2.0-poorten, waarvan er een wordt gedeeld met een esata-aansluiting, en is het model voorzien van hdmi en bluetooth 2.1 + edr-connectiviteit en ondersteuning voor wifi-n. Het gewicht ligt op 2,5 kilogram, inclusief de zescellige accu met een capaciteit van 6600mAh. De verwachte adviesprijs is 949 euro en het model zou begin juni moeten uitkomen.



Samsung P530Samsung komt tegen die tijd ook met de P530. Dit is een goedkoper model met een Core i3-330M, 3GB en wat lichtere, minder strakke behuizing zonder geborsteld aluminium cover. Andere wijzigingen ten opzichte van de P580 zijn dat de P530 geen gigabit ethernet, docking-poort en esata heeft. De adviesprijs is 789 euro.AMD heeft zijn nieuwe mainstream- en ultraportable-platforms geïntroduceerd. Bij de ultraportables zou AMD vooral tot betere accutijden leiden; de mainstream-notebooks krijgen een prestatieboost, onder meer door Phenom II-quadcores.


Het ultraportable-platform had voorheen de codenaam Nile en moet Congo opvolgen. Vijf cpu's maken deel uit van dit platform: twee Turion II Neo-dualcores, een Athlon II Neo-dualcore, een Athlon II Neo-singlecore en de AMD V105. De Dualcores hebben een tdp van 15W, de Athlon II Neo-singlecore heeft een tdp van 12W en de V105 is met zijn tdp van 9W de zuinigste van de nieuwelingen. Waar het vorige platform nog een maximum-accuduur van 6 uur mogelijk maakte, zou dit bij Nile op 8 uur liggen.Naast de cpu zijn ddr3-geheugen en de RS880-chipset onderdeel van het platform. Ook de gpu heeft daarmee een upgrade gekregen; de igp is een model uit de Mobility Radeon HD 4200-serie met DirectX 10.1-ondersteuning, hoewel fabrikanten additioneel ook een gpu uit de HD 5400-lijn met DX11-ondersteuning mogen toevoegen. Het Nile-platform is volgens AMD bedoeld voor laptops met schermdiagonalen van 11 tot en met 13,3 inch. AMD meldt dat vrijwel alle grote fabrikanten met op AMD gebaseerde thin & lights komen, waarbij als voorbeeld HP's Pavilion DM1 en DM3, Acers Aspire 5625 en Lenovo's Edge 15 worden genoemd.


Het nieuwe Danube-platform voor mainstream-laptops is de opvolger van Tigris. Ook laptops op basis van Danube moeten het langer op een acculading kunnen volhouden dan hun voorgangers. Dit komt onder andere doordat de nieuwe cpu's uit de Champlain-serie op 45nm worden geproduceerd, maar AMD claimt ook andere optimalisaties te hebben doorgevoerd, onder meer bij de CoolCore-technologie en met betrekking tot het uitschakelen van ongebruikte systeemonderdelen.


De meest in het oog springende onderdelen van het platform zijn de Phenom II-triplecore en -quadcores en de Black Edition-cpu's die over een unlocked multiplier beschikken voor eenvoudiger overklokken. Het mainstreamplatform bevat verder dezelfde onderdelen als Nile. De laptops krijgen dus ddr3-geheugen, de RS880-chipset met de Mobility Radeon HD 4200-igp, met optioneel een gpu uit de HD 5400-lijn. AMD noemt als voorbeelden van laptops op basis van Danube: HP's dv6, Dells Inspiron 15, Asus' N61 en Acers Aspire 5551.Toshiba zou werken aan een 13-laptop die lichter en dunner is dan bestaande modellen. Tevens zou de fabrikant, naast de normale accu, een scib-accu in het apparaat opnemen. Scib-accu's laden veel sneller op dan lithium-ionmodellen.

Modern microprocessors come as single core or multi-core. A multi-core microprocessor such as the Intel Core i7, have more than one processing units (cores) present on a single chip.


It gathers the necessary program data to be processed. For this, the data is first shifted from the hard drive to the RAM of the computer then to the CPU.

The CPU then processes the data on the basis of some rules and regulations, known as Instruction Set, it already knows.

Finally, the processed data is ready. It then follows the steps the programmer has included in the program. For example, the processed data can be displayed on the screen or saved to the hard drive.It is a memory supplement used by the CPU while it¡¯s busy with the processing jobs. Cache memory contains the data which is often required by a CPU like the program instructions. It is easier for the CPU access the cache memory first than going for the larger ones. Cache memory is way faster than RAMs and hence it¡¯s costlier. So, the size of the cache memory is kept very limited.


Cache memory comes in levels like L1 cache, L2 cache, and L3 cache. The CPU first searches for the required data in L1, then L2, then L3, and L4 if it exists. Finally, if none of the cache memories are able to provide the required data, it will access the RAM. Cache memory is very vital to a computer. A computer with a faster processor and less cache will perform worse than a slower processor with more cache. But this doesn¡¯t mean that a 20-year-old processor puffed with excess cache could outperform a present-day processor.Random Access Memory is one of the vital parts of a computer. If you take out the RAM chip out of your computer, it won¡¯t start. It is faster than the hard drives and is used to store program data which is currently used by the CPU. But RAM suffers from short -term memory loss. What does it mean? It holds data only when it receives power. Once you turn off your computer all the data will be lost. That¡¯s the reason it can¡¯t be used as a permanent storage solution in a computer.



The RAM chips we use in our laptop and desktops differ in size. The reason is to make the memory chip compact for the laptops. But they have the same functionality and powers. Dynamic RAM integrated circuits, known as Dual-Inline Memory Module (DIMM), are mounted on green colored PCB and then called as DIMM chips. Memory variants like DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, etc. differ in the number of pin counts they have.Before DIMMs, SIMMs used to exist. The key difference between the two is the number of pin counts. SIMMs have half the number of pins than DIMMs. However, the number of pins will appear the same if you take a casual look on them. A keen observation would lead to a conclusion that the pins on either side of a SIMM are connected to each other which is not the case with DIMM.


Also, the SIMM supports a 32-bit data bus while DIMM supports 64-bit data bus. This allows the flow of more data in the case of DIMM. The modern 64-bit CPUs would require an installation of two SIMMs chips.A single DIMM would be sufficient for that. Hence, the SIMMs became obsolete with time.

UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) can be called the future of the BIOS. It is more advanced and provides better security. However, most manufacturers still provide support for UEFI and BIOS with their machines as UEFI is not implemented across the world.It is a large and permanent storage space which is used to keep all the data required by a computer like the operating system files, songs, videos, and third-party software files, etc. When needed, the data is transferred from the hard drive to the random access memory for being used by the CPU.This memory can be a magnetic rotating hard disk drive (HDDs) or a Solid State Drive (SSD). Hard Drive is common than the newer SSDs as they are cheap but SSDs are way faster. These HDDs and HDDs connected to the computer through the SATA interface-based storage connectors present on the motherboard.

If you install a non-supported BIOS on a machine, it may lead to hardware failure. It is so specific that even if you install the BIOS of a different model of the same manufacturer, you might end up burning your motherboard.


UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) can be called the future of the BIOS. It is more advanced and provides better security. However, most manufacturers still provide support for UEFI and BIOS with their machines as UEFI is not implemented across the world.It is a large and permanent storage space which is used to keep all the data required by a computer like the operating system files, songs, videos, and third-party software files, etc. When needed, the data is transferred from the hard drive to the random access memory for being used by the CPU.This memory can be a magnetic rotating hard disk drive (HDDs) or a Solid State Drive (SSD). The current wattOS R10 release is based on i3 window manager that fitted perfectly with my familiar LXDE desktop environment.All the options can be accessed from a single taskbar. By default, it hosts the menu, and icons for LXTerminal, PCManFM file manager, Firefox web browser, opened applications, etc.wattOS R10 ships with Linux kernel 4.4.0-36, Firefox 48.0, PCManFM 1.2.4, Filezilla 3.15.0.2, Transmission 2.84, Evince 3.10.3, and Gufw 16.04.1. This release replaces R9¡¯s Audacious music player with Lollypop 0.9.112, a modern GTK+3 music player written in Python.Apart from the music section, replacements have been made in graphics/picture editing department with the addition of gThumb 3.4.3, which does a decent job. As said earlier, wattOS R10 is a fast and lightweight operating system. It works perfectly fine with old computers that have memory and power limitations. So, if there¡¯s an old PC rotting in your basement, wattOS could become its new best friend. It can perform all the basic functions like internet surfing, word processing, email, playing music, etc. However, expecting wattOS to play 4K videos or using it for heavy video editing will be unfair.The current release, wattOS R10 LXDE, needs about 192-256MB RAM for installation. After the installation completes, it needs 128MB RAM to run. However, I¡¯ll recommend you to use at least 256MB RAM for a satisfactory performance.


Note: In my tests, I found the web browser a little bit slow to launch at first. After installation of the operating system, it was normal. I looked for the issue on the official wattOS forum and found something similar listed over there. But according to a Reuters report, Google has finally prepared to put a stop signal in the development road of Project Ara. Google also had plans to release a consumer version in 2017 but that seems to be foggy now. The Kaby Lake processors can improve the battery life up to 3-times when 4K videos are played on the computer.Intel has also partnered with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to bring their ULTRA 4K movie streaming service (launched in January this for Sony¡¯s 4K TVs) to the users of the 7th Gen Intel Core processors. The movie rental service will commence sometime in the first quarter of 2017.Intel aims that its next-gen Core processors would power most of the laptops and 2-in-1s in the market. There won't be any tech snobbery here, incidentally, against the idea of 'everyday computing', as though all tech journalists and specialists actually need and frequently use the power of the MacBook Pro they probably own. The 2016 MacBook, even in its lowest-spec model, is more than adequate for the needs of most - although video editors and gamers should look elsewhere.

It's the first Apple MacBook to ship with Intel's latest generation of processor, 'Skylake'. Along with Intel's HD Graphics 515 card, the MacBook has faster performance and storage speeds across the board. It's fair to say that these aren't extremely noticeable in use compared to the 2015 model, but the laptop is agile and responsive.

The standard 8GB of RAM helps, as does the flash storage - there are no moving parts in this laptop, and therefore no fan. It barely runs warm, even when put under a bit of pressure with multiple programmes running. A laptop that doesn't scald your lap is always a plus.
Bonus points: pleasingly for a laptop this small, the speakers are outstanding.


Our attractively grey (Space Grey, because space is grey) review model in particular has picked up many compliments on its short travels. (The Rose Gold model is more of an opinion divider.) There's no denying this is a beautiful product.

Instead, we are drawn to notice, and potentially criticise, the one sole port on this computer. (Bar the headphone port. First name on the team sheet.) It's USB-C, a relatively new standard of USB connection. The bundled charger connects to the port, which is also able to transfer data and act as a video output port. You'll need an adapter to do all three at once.

But so what? If you know you'll want to attach several USB sticks to your computer every day, then you just won't consider this laptop - much like those who will want to connect an external monitor. The MacBook doesn't support Thunderbolt 3, so the best option for second screening is with an HDMI adaptor to connect to a compatible monitor.


Let¡¯s get down to the details, though. The casing is made from magnesium alloy and is just 4mm thick at its thinnest point (the bottom of the touch keyboard). When folded shut, it¡¯s just 9.6mm thick and the 130-piece hinge can be folded either way, so you can flip the screen behind the keyboard to use it as a tablet.

The highlight is the fact that the keyboard isn¡¯t a physical one but a completely flat surface which lights up as a keyboard when required. Lenovo calls it the Instant Halo touch based keyboard. Apparently, two of the three years of development were spent getting the response and haptic feedback right.

The touch surface isn't a screen: you can see the outlines of the keys when it isn't lit up, and this means you can't change the layout. If you want a UK keyboard, make sure you buy a Yoga Book in the UK.

In lab tests, it turned out that it¡¯s possible to type 151 characters per minute on it ¨C essentially the same speed as using a physical 10-inch keyboard. To help speed up typing even more, there¡¯s predictive text which works just like an Android or iOS keyboard, popping up suggestions as you type. And to keep typos in check, the keyboard will learn where you hit keys and know that you meant to hit the spacebar or ¡®a¡¯ even if your thumb or finger didn¡¯t quite make it to the key.

In our brief tests, we struggled to adapt to such a large touch keyboard and even the auto-correct couldn't fix all of our typos. Strangely, despite being used to on-screen keyboards on phones and even tablets, it wasn't easy to quickly adapt to this version. The haptic feedback didn't trigger with each keypress and, while we felt it, it was difficult to know exactly what it was attempting to tell us.

Below the keyboard is a trackpad, which supports two-fingered gestures. On the Windows version there are two buttons ¨C one either side of the pad ¨C and just one for Android. They're not actual buttons of course, just distinct areas on the touch surface. You can tap the left one for the left-click, and the right for a right-click. And as you'd expect, tapping the pad itself is the same as a left-click.



In the box you also get a stylus. Lenovo sensibly partnered with Wacom for the touch and pen technology, which means that any Windows apps which already support an Intuos tablet will support the Yoga Book. Using EMR also means you can hover the stylus above the surface to position the stylus before drawing anything. Plus, as this works up to 10mm away, you can also use the magnetic Book Pad which sits on top of the touch surface. As you might expect, there are 2048 levels of pressure, a sensor to detect at which angle you¡¯re holding the stylus and also palm rejection when you¡¯re leaning on the touch surface.
Cleverly, the stylus is also a real pen so you can make physical notes or drawings which are captured digitally on screen at the same time. On the Windows version, notes are saved straight to OneNote, but there¡¯s a dedicated app ¨C Note Saver ¨C on the Android one.

Lenovo also made the Yoga Book and stylus compatible with Windows 10¡¯s new Windows Ink feature, which was added in the Anniversary Update. The main screen is also a touchscreen, so you can use the stylus on that as well, although you won¡¯t get the pressure sensitivity of course.


This screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1920x1200. That¡¯s plenty for this size and, being IPS, colours were decent and viewing angles wide.

Power comes from a quad-core Intel Atom processor which can boost up to 2.4GHz. It¡¯s hard to gauge performance from our short time with the Yoga Book, so we¡¯ll wait until we can run our usual benchmarks to see how it shapes up against its 2-in-1 competitors around this price.
The on-board Intel HD Graphics 400 should be plenty for casual games, but forget about playing the latest 3D shooter on the Windows version at maximum resolution.

Battery life is claimed to be a ¡°not exaggerated¡± 15 hours, and that¡¯s a mix of productivity and entertainment, such as sending emails and watching Netflix. We can¡¯t test this yet, but we will.

The Yoga Book supports fast charging over its micro USB port. It comes with a fast charger that will charge the battery from empty to 80 percent in 50 mins. That¡¯s not bad at all considering the 8500mAh capacity.


The Windows model runs the latest 64-bit version of Windows 10. There¡¯s little point in going into more detail about this here. You can read more in our Windows 10 review.

The Android version is more interesting. It comes with Android 6.0 but Lenovo has promised an upgrade to Nougat at some point. It has customised Android a fair bit, although it¡¯s relatively familiar and the app tray has been retained.

Most of the customisation is for productivity which, as we noted in the Google Pixel C review, is lacking. Lenovo has made it possible to have up to four windows open at once, and ensured you can use standard keyboard shortcuts.

There's some work to be done, it appears. While the keyboard works whenever you tap on a text box, the stylus's use is very limited at the moment. You can't use it on the main screen, and you can only use it to draw in apps which support it. The only app on our demo machines was the Note Saver app.

This is also one of the first laptops we¡¯ve reviewed to use Windows Hello, a combo of software and hardware that lets you bring the x360 out of sleep with your face rather than a pin or password. It uses IR cameras next to the webcam so that it works fine in dark rooms as well as well-lit ones.

Don¡¯t start thinking this is some sort of Retinal-scanning security. The cameras are quite low-res, relying on facial geometry rather than recognising fine detail. Performance is somewhat patchy, veering between working in a second or so failing altogether after 10 seconds of ¡®checking¡¯ a face. However, it does work whether the Envy x360 is used in laptop or ¡®tent¡¯ position, where the camera sits at the bottom of the screen. Also see: Best budget laptops 2016.

HP ENVY X360 15 REVIEW: CONNECTIVITY

The other up-to-date extra is the HP Envy x360¡¯s USB-C port. This small, reversible redesign of USB is set to one day replace the chunky cables we¡¯ve been using for 20 years. Right now USB-C ports are not essential for most people, but you may sorely need one in 2-3 years.
Other basic connections are covered too. There are two USB 3.0 ports, a full-size SD card slot and full-size HDMI. The non-folding HP Envy 15 gets you an extra USB, but you do get enough connections to make this the brains of a desktop PC.


We¡¯ve been using the Envy x360 alongside the Envy 15, and the two also have slightly different keyboard characteristics. While they have the same full-size layout, with a NUM pad bolted onto the side, the x360 has slightly greater key resistance, but softer feedback in general. Neither keyboard is perfect, but by losing the crisp feel of the Envy 15, it¡¯s harder to see what sort of feel HP was aiming for here.

It¡¯s a little indistinct, which may disappoint if you¡¯re coming from a laptop with a good keyboard. There is a backlight, though, adding a touch of flair to what is otherwise a so-so typing surface.

The HP Envy x360¡¯s trackpad is large and wide. There¡¯s lots of space, but once again it isn¡¯t quite up to what you get in the cheaper Envy 15.

For the best trackpad feel you want a frosted glass top, which gives a super-smooth feel and the right level of resistance but no tackiness. The Envy x360 uses something else, though. While the resistance is fine, there¡¯s the telltale tackiness of a plastic trackpad surface.


There¡¯s also far greater variance in the depth of the pad¡¯s movement from end to end and the button placement isn¡¯t quite as smart. In the HP Envy 15, the right button is kept to a very small corner in the bottom-right. Here it spreads out far enough to cause some accidental presses until you train your fingers to respect its layout.

The HP Envy x360 has a fair trackpad, but it¡¯s disappointing to see HP sneakily use a superior one in its cheaper machine. And all in service of that hinge. Also see: Best gaming laptops 2016.It¡¯s the hinge too that puts a particular focus on the screen, as viewing angles are more important, and a touch layer can have an impact on image quality. Once again, the HP Envy x360 puts in a fair, but not particularly enviable, performance.

The display is 15.6 inches across and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, for density of 141ppi. This is low density for any tablet-style purpose, as you do notice pixellation rather clearly as soon as you get any closer than arm¡¯s reach.

Of course, the sheer space of those extra 2.3 inches of display is a key appeal.



Display quality is middling. Colour coverage of sRGB is just 55.8 per cent, resulting is fairly clear undersaturation. The Envy 15 has similar (just slightly better) colour performance, but the undersaturation is a little less evident because display contrast is higher.
The Envy x360¡¯s native contrast of 762:1 is still reasonably good, though.

Despite having an IPS LCD screen, viewing angles are slightly disappointing. There¡¯s none of the contrast shift you¡¯d see in a cheap TN-based hybrid display, but brightness drops off severely at an angle.

This is made worse by poor max brightness of 234cd/m. Despite the lifestyle flourishes, the Envy x360 is not ready to be used outdoors. We tried using the x360 outside on a sunny day, and while you can make out text on the white background of a word processing app, anything lower-contrast is very difficult to make out.
It¡¯s less of a disappointment than the recently reviewed Asus UX360CA, though, whose touchscreen design makes the entire screen appear grey rather than black. The HP Envy x360 looks fine indoors, it just doesn¡¯t fare too well when challenged. Also see: Windows 10 review.


Typical of a larger convertible laptop, the HP Envy x360 uses a low-voltage Intel Core-series CPU rather than one of Intel¡¯s more powerful quad-core models. Our test unit has an Intel Core i7-6560U CPU, a dual-core, four-thread chipset with a standard clock speed of 2.2GHz and a Turbo of 3.2GHz.

This is a very solid all-purpose chipset for those with low-end and mid-level performance demands. While not a desktop-grade CPU, it¡¯ll handle any kind of productivity task with relative ease.

It¡¯s also one of the few areas where the Envy x360 trumps the simpler Envy 15, scoring 7280 in Geekbench 3 and 3053 in PC Mark 8. In each case that¡¯s around 200 points better than the Envy 15.

The most interesting part of the Intel Core i7-6560U for many of you will be that it uses Intel HD 540 Iris graphics rather than the bog-standard HD 520. While still not a match for a dedicated GPU, it does result in an extra handful of frames per second in our gaming tests, potentially enough to turn around a game from painful to playable.


Our 720p Low settings Alien Isolation test, for example, runs at 44.5fps on the Envy x360, and just 31fps on the Envy 15, which uses an Intel HD 520 GPU. Thief at Low settings runs at 27.3fps: not ideal but playable for the patient among you.

Neither game runs well when we increase the resolution to 1080p and max-out the visuals, Alien Isolation slowing to 18.7fps and Thief to a dismal 6.9fps, but if you like to play the occasional game, an Iris upgrade is well worth having.

The HP Envy x360 doesn¡¯t get too hot or loud under strain, but it doesn¡¯t have the cleanest fan noise either. You¡¯ll probably only notice it when the laptop comes out of sleep, when it briefly revs its CPU fan, but in a quiet room it can be a little distracting.

Rather different to most convertibles, the x360 has both a 128GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive. This gets you zippy Windows 10 responsiveness and loads of storage to play with.

The SSD is not particularly fast with read speeds of up to 512MB/s and writes at 185MB/s. Given the modest SSD performance, it¡¯s slightly surprising that HP has used a faster 7200rpm 1TB rather than a bog-standard 5400rpm one. It reads/writes at 146/135MB/s, but the performance increase is going to be fairly meaningless if you¡¯re largely going to be storing media on the HDD.



One other element that seems to have some extra effort put in is the speaker, a stereo array that fires out of the funky-looking grille above the keyboard.

It¡¯s a Bang & Olufsen speaker array that has a satisfyingly chunky tone, and good top volume. However, it is slightly prone to mid-range distortion when maxed-out and, presumably thanks to the workings of the hinge, the drivers do not sound as though they are well-spaced along the x360¡¯s width.
Finally, let¡¯s tackle battery life. The Envy x360 has a 55.7Wh battery that HP says will last for up to 10 hours, although in our experience it is less long-lasting.

Playing a 720p video back at 120cd/m, which is low-strain in terms of display brightness and CPU demand, it lasts seven hours 20 minutes. You should also expect lower stamina with more mixed use that comes with general day-to-day work.

Its decent longevity, and better than you¡¯d see from a more powerful quad-core laptop, but still much worse than the HP Envy 15, which lasts for over nine hours of video playback.

As with the design and connections, the keyboard and trackpad just add a little ¡®current¡¯ flavour to otherwise traditional hardware. All the space provided by a 15.6-inch frame lets the keyboard pack in a numerical pad and no keys are cut down to an irritating extent.
Press down hard on the centre of the keyboard surround and you can make it flex a tiny bit, but the keyboard feels solid and is comfortable to type on for hours at a time. Actual key feedback is on the light side, but is nevertheless crisp and reasonably well-defined.
One of the rather neat bonus features of the HP Envy is a keyboard backlight, something still often missed out at the price. It's a simple on/off blueish light, but is a godsend if you're going to have to do some typing in the dark. For whatever reason. Also see: Best gaming laptops 2016.


It's the HP Envy 15's trackpad that has the modern twist, with an ultra-elongated design intended simply to give your fingers more room to play with. It's a lovely, smooth surface with a satisfyingly deep clicky action to it. It requires a slightly harder press than some, but we were used to the feel within a few hours.

There are more smarts to the pad than you can initially tell too. One issue that can ruin trackpads of laptops with NUM pads is that due to the way the trackpad is shifted to the left of the frame it can be far too easy to accidentally press the right mouse button when you mean to use the left.
Not so here: only a tiny part of the pad is used to fire the right button, taking up around a fifth of the pad's width. Unlike most Windows laptop trackpads, you get the sense HP has actually played around with the design to find what works best out in the real work, under real fingers.


Its feel isn¡¯t quite a match for a MacBook Pro pad, but it's not that far off, and is also larger.

This kind of thoughtfulness and attention to detail is seen in all the HP Envy 15's best bits. It may not be that exciting, but it actually thinks about the real state of laptop use as much as the HP Spectre 13. Also see: Windows 10 review.

HP ENVY 15 REVIEW: SPECS AND PERFORMANCE

This is clear in the specs too. First, it has a very sensible combo of a 128GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive. This gets you real SSD snappiness as well as the capacity of slower HDD storage.


t of a pity the SSD isn't faster, though. At 185MB/s write and 510MB/s read, it is only a little over a third the speed of the fastest SSDs around. The hard drive is a slow 5400rpm model too.

The CPU choice is telling too. A lot of the larger laptops we review these days have high-power HQ-series processors, but the HP Envy 15 uses U-series chipsets like those of the more portable models. The U designates a lower-voltage processor, intended for slim laptops that need to offer decent battery life.

The HP Envy 15 we're reviewing uses an Intel Core i7-6500U, a dual-core CPU with standard clock speed of 2.5GHz and a 3.1GHz Turbo. That is paired with 8GB RAM.

This is a reasonably powerful system, but only among lighter, slimmer laptops. If you want as much power as you can get for the money, the HP Envy 15 is the wrong laptop for you. For those who can put up with a lot more chunkiness and weight, Asus offers a quad-core GPU and dedicated GPU for this sort of price in the GL552.



Again, we come back to the idea that the Envy 15 is made from the ground up for the average buyer, not someone who spends evenings transcoding videos. For the basics, and even low-level image and video editing, this laptop will feel very fast.

It scores 7052 in Geekbench 3, and 2851 in PC Mark 8.

Its gaming abilities are fairly limited, though. There's no separate GPU, and just the basic Intel HD 520 integrated graphics rather than one of Intel's punchier Iris chipsets.

Alien Isolation is playable if you turn the resolution down to 720p and tone down the graphics, with an average 31.5fps, but Thief is a bit of a struggle at any graphics settings. It manages an average 25.6fps, below the 30fps average we¡¯re aiming for.

You will be able to play games from slightly older generations, though. Dead Space and Skyrim will run well at medium settings thanks to Intel's HD CPU improvements.


HP ENVY 15 REVIEW: BATTERY

Among some of its 15.6-inch laptop peers the HP Envy 15 is a bit of a weakling, but its battery life is an effective comeback.

Playing a video file on loop at 120cd/m brightness, the battery lasts 9 hours 25 minutes. This is an excellent result, matching HP¡¯s own claims.

We also tried using the Envy 15 outside at max brightness to see how it copes in a more natural context. An hour of work took 13 per cent off the battery, suggesting you can expect a solid seven and a half hours of use between charges. Again, it¡¯s a good result considering brightness was maxed-out.


One of the chunkier, more performance-oriented alternatives might nly last 3-5 hours under the same conditions, and the Envy 15 significantly outlasts the Envy x360 too. Another side-benefit of using a U-series CPU instead of an HQ one is that the Envy 15 seems to stay cool with fairly little effort. While a fan runs constantly during use, the laptop remains fairly quiet when performing gaming benchmarks.

Its speaker array is passable too. The sound comes from the criss-cross grille on the keyboard surround, and it both louder and fuller-sounding than most other Bang & Olufsen-branded laptop speakers. It¡¯s a shame, though, that HP puts more effort into making the Envy x360 speakers sound that bit better. They deliver better bass.

The HP Envy 15 doesn't seem like a desperately interesting laptop at first glance. It's too big to be cool, not quite cheap enough to be a stone-cold bargain. However, the longer you use it, the more you realise quite what a sound fit it is for people who want a larger laptop, but one not ugly, chunky or liable to last 90 minutes between charges. Sound performance, a smart trackpad, a respectable display and sensible price make the HP Envy 15 one of the best laptops for those who don't really need a super-performance PC but still want the desktop-replacer feel you get with a 15.6-inch laptop.

The HP Envy 360 is one of the largest convertible laptops. It has a 15.6-inch screen, but also a 360-degree hinge like some of today's top lifestyle hybrids. Also see: Best laptops 2016

This is a solidly-made laptop whose somewhat-aggressive pricing makes sure it doesn't seem you're paying over the odds for the hinge. One question remains: what are you going to with a hybrid this big? If you don't have an answer, you should also consider the HP Envy 15, this laptop's non-convertible brother.


HP ENVY X360 15 REVIEW: UK PRICE

The Envy range sits in the middle of HP's laptops. It gets you some frills HP Pavilion laptops lack, but doesn't have the glitz, or the price, of a Spectre model.

The HP Envy x360 comes at a typically mid-range cost, of £779 for the version with an Intel Core i5-6200U. For £849 you get the Intel Core i7 version, which also has a more powerful GPU. More on that later.
