Akku ASUS UX52A

Toshiba Portege R400 Tablet PC Battery

Our reviews of previous Samsung netboosks give us reason to think they'll all be decent performers when they're released in the UK later this month, all being well. Prices are TBC.At $349, The N150 falls into the same price range as other retail fixed configuration Netbooks we've reviewed. It costs about $50 more than entry-level $299 models, but for the same price, you can also get the Asus Eee PC 1018 that offers similar components, but a slimmer profile and a more upscale brushed-metal look, as well as more than 30 minutes of additional battery life.In a world where most Netbooks are glossy black bricks, the Samsung N150 at least tries to look a little different. Mixing black and burgundy, the lid reminded us a bit of the sunburst finish found on many guitars. The interior is less interesting; everything is a simple matte black. Compared with slimmer Netbooks such as the Asus Eee PC 1018, it looks and feels thick and bulky. However, with that you also get the sense that this is a solidly built laptop that can stand up to some serious road abuse. The keyboard has wide, flat-topped keys, packed tightly together, which is a change from the more common island-style keyboards we've seen on most new Netbooks. The keys themselves are a good size, but the lack of space between them led to plenty of typing mistakes when we first started using the keyboard. The all-important right Shift key is fortunately a good size, but the four arrow keys are shrunk down quite a bit.

It has a decent size touch pad, but it's not as wide as the one of the Asus Eee PC 1018. The left and right mouse buttons are less impressive, relegated to a thin one-piece rocker bar that is far from our favorite way to control a mouse pointer.
The 10.1-inch wide-screen display has a 1,024x600-pixel native resolution, which is standard for nonpremium Netbook screens. One of the best features of the N150 is its matte screen finish, which is a rarity on Netbooks (or consumer laptops of any size), so if you're very sensitive to screen glare, it could be a deal clincher.
As with most of the fixed configuration retail Netbooks we've seen recently, 802.11n Wi-Fi is standard, while Bluetooth gets skipped. Other than that, you're not going to find any high-end extras, just the usual combo of three USB ports, a VGA video out, and an SD card reader. While all of our back to school 2010 retail Netbooks essentially use the same combination on an Intel Atom N450 CPU, Windows 7 Starter, and 1GB of RAM (the HP Mini 210 has a variation N455 CPU and a faster hard drive), the Samsung N150 was actually faster then the competition by a few seconds in each of our benchmark tests.

Before you get too excited about that, the difference is literally just a few seconds in each case, and you're very unlikely to be able to tell the difference in everyday use. We'd say the N150 has typical Netbook performance, which means it's fine for basic Web surfing, office productivity, and light multimedia playback--HD streaming video is definitely iffy. The key to Netbook satisfaction is keeping one's expectations modest, and not trying to completely replace the full-size, full-power computer you already have. When we reviewed the Samsung R730, we were impressed by its ¡ê500 price tag and stylish red lid. But we were disappointed by its lack of power and the fact that the lovely red finish didn't extend to the laptop's interior. Now that we have our hands on the 17.3-inch Samsung R780, we're pleased to report that, for around ¡ê250 more, you can bag yourself an Intel Core i5 CPU, Blu-ray drive and a glossy red finish both inside and out. But are those features worth the extra moolah? At around 411 by 40 by 273mm, the R780 is a fairly substantial laptop, but, on the plus side, its bulky dimensions mean there's loads of extra space for that lovely glossy red finish to cover. This deep red covers not only the R780's lid, but also stretches around the keyboard and goes right up to the hinge. It's a consistency of style we see in precious few machines, and Samsung deserves praise for creating a laptop that looks good both inside and out. Pretty much everything that's not red is an understated matte black.

We like other details of the R780's interior too, such as its the chrome-accented power button, and the four tiny, blue LEDs that light up the corners of the R780's trackpad whenever you're using it.
The LEDs on the trackpad's corners help ensure your finger doesn't stray onto the patterned chassis by accident
The R780's port array is pretty bog-standard, with VGA and HDMI out, three USB ports, an additional eSATA/USB port, an Ethernet jack, a multi-format card reader, and 3.5mm sockets for headphones and a microphone. The trackpad is impressively large and smooth, and the keyboard is big, comfortable and sensibly laid out, with isolated keys. Typing on it for extended periods of time won't cause your fingers to warp permanently into unnatural shapes.
This machine runs Windows 7 Home Premium, and sports a 500GB hard drive to handle your storage needs. That's a decent storage capacity for the price, and you'd have to be a real download fiend to burn through that kind of space in a hurry.

We like the 17.3-inch LED display, which offers a decent maximum resolution of 1,600x900 pixels. More impressive than the resolution, however, is the brightness of this display. It's sufficiently bright to cancel out most of the reflections that appear on the very glossy screen. Colours look vibrant, and the screen also boasts a wide horizontal and vertical viewing angle, so the whole family can crowd around to check out the humiliating Facebook photos you've been tagged in.Toshiba clearly thought its Satellite range of laptops wasn't big enough, so it's churned out a few more machines to plug the gaps. One such device is the Satellite A660, which is part of the company's entertainment and gaming line-up. That means we're expecting it to be able to handle high-definition movies and some of our favourite games. Our review model is the Satellite A660-15T, which features an Intel Core i7-720QM CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. It can be yours for around ¡ê900 from John Lewis. If you asked a six-year-old child to draw a laptop, they'd probably doodle something resembling the A660. It couldn't really look more generic -- it's a solid black rectangle, with a big chrome logo on the lid. But, while the A660 might not grab your attention at first, closer inspection reveals plenty of interesting details.

The lid and keyboard surround have a textured, brick-like pattern that we've seen on other Toshiba machines in the past. The effect is subtle, but we like it. The inside of the lid is made of glossy black plastic, with a brushed effect lurking just below the surface. We didn't notice either of these surfaces picking up many fingerprints. The trackpad is large, with a glowing white strip at the top, and, in the lower left-hand corner, there's an illuminated Satellite logo. Above the keyboard, which has isolated keys, you'll find a range of touch-sensitive buttons. On either side of these buttons sit built-in Harman Kardon speakers. Set below a black grille, they look like proper speakers, and they're the A660's most distinctive visual feature. The A660's connectivity is pretty comprehensive. Around the sides are VGA and HDMI outputs, an Ethernet port, a Blu-ray/DVD rewritable drive, three USB ports and a SATA/USB port for plugging in an extra hard drive. There's also a 3.5mm socket for headphones or a microphone. Finally, there's a multi-format card reader on the front.

We were positively delighted by both the A660's keyboard and trackpad. The keyboard is comfortable, and each key has a pleasingly grippy feel. Typing at speed is a breeze, and we made very few mistakes. The trackpad is large and incredibly sensitive, which makes complex cursor movements simple. The trackpad buttons are the pi¨¨ce de r¨¦sistance -- they're extremely sensitive and easy to press, so you won't end up with a cramped, crippled hand after a long day of computing. The A660 sports a 16-inch, LED-backlit screen, with a maximum resolution of 1,366x768 pixels. That's a decent resolution for a screen of this size. When we looked at some photos, however, we noticed that the display isn't especially bright, and we've certainly seen screens that project more vivid colours. The A660's screen could definitely benefit from a higher contrast ratio. The vertical viewing angle is also pretty poor -- putting the screen at just a slight angle beyond your direct line of sight will cause it to become too dark to view.

The A660-15T is powered by a beefy Intel Core i7-720QM CPU. It's quad-core, with a 6MB cache, and a clock speed of 1.6GHz, or 2.8GHz when it goes into turbo mode. Your storage needs will be catered for by a 500GB hard drive.Budget laptops don't tend to be very attractive, but the L650 bucks the trend. There's nothing particularly innovative about its glossy black chassis, but the slick, carbon-fibre-style pattern on the surface certainly adds a touch of class. We were impressed by the L650's build quality. Cheap laptops can feel as if they'll fall apart in your hands, but this machine is relatively sturdy. There's little keyboard flex, the screen's hinge mechanism is tight, and we get the feeling that, if the laptop were dropped accidentally, nothing serious would go wrong. The L650 is a relatively large laptop. Its chassis measures a not inconsiderable 380 by 28 by 250mm, and weighs 2.5kg, so getting it into a bag will be a struggle. The upshot of having such a large chassis is that Toshiba's been able to accommodate a huge trackpad, a full-size keyboard and an accompanying numerical keypad. The latter will prove useful for anyone who enters plenty of numerical data, or for people who want to assign keyboard shortcuts in their favourite games.

The L650 has a large, 15.6-inch display. This runs at a rather modest 1,366x768-pixel resolution, which is low given the size of the panel. But the quality of the display is undeniable. It has a wide viewing angle, particularly across the horizontal axis, so it lends itself well to watching movies side by side with a friend.
The L650-12Q looks unremarkable, but its performance is surprisingly good, given its price
You'll want to buy yourself a set of external speakers or headphones though, because the L650's speakers are truly terrible, even by laptop standards. We've heard better audio coming out of a mobile phone. The L650 isn't particularly well endowed in terms of connectivity options. It has three USB ports, one of which doubles as an eSATA port, a two-in-one memory-card reader and an HDMI video output. That's enough to get by, but, considering that many laptops of a similar size have four or more USB ports, we feel rather cheated.Jay LeBoff was sick of being left incommunicado when the power went out in his neighborhood in Westchester County, N.Y. So he set out to build a backup power supply that relies on the sun.

At the Consumer Electronics Show, his company, NRG Dock, showed off solar chargers that are designed to run a range of electronics, including cell phones, Blackberrys, gaming machines, and music players. A high-end version will power laptops. The products have a couple of pieces. In the Home version, there is a weatherproof battery and a solar panel that charges up and connects to a docking station inside. With a 15-watt panel and battery, it has enough juice to run a laptop for several hours, Allan Wattenmaker, the company's chief operating officer, said Tuesday at CES.The Apartment version has a smaller panel that can be attached to a window with a suction cup. That charger is designed for smaller devices, like iPods and cell phones, rather than laptops, Wattenmaker said.NRG Dock plans to release its first products in the second or third quarter of this year. The Home version will cost $800, and the Apartment version will cost $500. Both will benefit from federal and state tax rebates that could take 30 percent off the price, Wattenmaker said.

Sony VGP-BPS13B/B Battery

While this Satellite has ATI graphics chip, its performance is not much better than integrated Intel graphics. In our Unreal Tournament III benchmark test, the laptop chugged at a paltry 17.4 frames per second at 1,200x720-pixel resolution. This laptop isn't a gaming system, but its ATI graphics should provide a little help with video and system performance. The Dell Studio s1558-5691MSL is a Next Class laptop from Best Buy. Like the retailer's Blue Label systems, Next Class laptops are designed based on customer feedback; in this case, feedback from college students. A Next Class notebook comes preloaded with a full version of Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010; 12 months of Webroot antivirus protection; a backlit keyboard; a built-in Webcam; and at least up to 4 hours of battery life. Including Office is nice and does make the s1558-5691MSL a better value. It's loaded with good components, too, including a 7,200rpm 500GB hard drive and an Intel Core i3 processor.

However, if you've made the switch to Web apps like Google Docs, are fine with free antivirus software like AVG or Avast, and would rather have a more entertainment-minded laptop for that $800, check out the Sony Vaio EA24FM/W, which has similar performance and battery life, but has a Blu-ray drive and Intel Wireless Display. Or if you like everything here, you can configure the Studio s1558 on Dell's site and get it for about $75 less without the software. The Dell Studio s1558 has sort of a wedge shape to it, tapering from 1.5 inches at the back to 1 inch at the front. It's a solid-feeling laptop, too, but at nearly 6.5 pounds with the power adapter, it might be a bit much for some to drag around campus all day. Although it's plastic, Dell gave this model a convincing brushed-metal finish that doesn't hold onto fingerprints nearly as much as you'd expect. That finish continues on the inside on the keyboard deck. The bottom is a standard matte-black plastic found on mainstream and budget laptops, as is the glossy black bezel around the LCD. It's a nice-looking and seemingly well-constructed system, likely to hold up to a good amount of use.

Bucking the Chiclet-style keyboard trend, Dell went with a pretty standard keyboard design, but it is large and comfortable with good movement and response. The keys are flat, but don't have the separation you'd find on a Chiclet-style keyboard. The keyboard is backlit and the light can be dimmed or shut off entirely with the F6 key. There are no extra media controls or a button for turning on and off wireless. Instead Dell clearly marks the function keys so adjusting things like screen brightness and volume can be done quickly and you don't have to hit the Fn key. (In case you actually want to use the Function keys for nonmedia tasks, a simple change in the BIOS settings under the Advanced tab will make the media controls the secondary function, meaning that you'll have to hit the Fn key to use the media controls.)

The touch pad is an indentation in the palm rest with a textured coating allowing fingers to glide smoothly. It seems a bit small, as do the mouse buttons that rise from within the bottom of the pad. The button movement is a little mushy without a satisfying click. On the other hand, we never had any problems using either the pad or buttons. Dell programmed in a few extra gesture features such as circular scrolling for quickly moving up and down with a swirl of a fingertip and pinching for zooming in and out. They're activated out of the box, but can easily be turned off.The 15.6-inch glossy wide-screen LCD has a native resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, which is standard for laptops in this price range (budget 15-inch systems typically have 1,280x800-pixel displays). It's perfectly adequate for most mainstream applications with easy-to-read text and icons. The LED-backlit LCD gets reasonably bright, too. Viewing angles off to the sides are pretty good, but like most displays in this class, you'll have to adjust the screen position to get the best color and contrast. Overall the performance is good, though.

Above the Studio's screen is a functional Webcam and mic that performed OK in our informal Skype testing. The stereo speakers are able to get fairly loud without distortion--plenty of volume for movies, music, and games. They don't have much bass to speak of and can sound a bit thin at times, but for casual listening they get the job done. If you're looking to use it for a lot of entertainment you'll want to pick up a set of external speakers.Again, the software package is a big part of why you'd choose a Next Class laptop over a regular retail laptop. If you don't need or want a paid-for copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student (which doesn't include Outlook, by the way), you might want to investigate other options in our desktop and laptop review roundup.

Editors' note: This review is part of our 2010 Retail Laptop and Desktop Back-to-School roundup, covering specific fixed configurations of popular systems that can be found in retail stores.
The Asus K501J-BCN5 is a member of Best Buy's Next Class program, which elicits feedback from college students about the features they want to see in a laptop. College students told Best Buy they would like a preloaded Office suite, long battery life, antivirus protection, and a backlit keyboard--all in a portable package at an affordable price. The Asus K501J-BCN5 hits on all of these features by and large, but you do pay for it. The K501J-BCN5 costs $699 and is nearly identical to the
So, what does the extra $170 get you on the Asus K501J-BCN5 that's not included on the BBZ5? Not a bump up with the CPU, more memory, or better graphics; both laptops features the Intel Pentium T4500 chip, 4GB of DDR2 memory, and integrated Intel graphics. The BCN5 model serves up a larger hard drive (500GB instead of 320GB) and a higher-capacity six-cell battery (62Whr to 46Whr). It also includes a backlit keyboard and a year of Webroot AV protection. Microsoft Office Starter 2010 is preinstalled, even though Best Buy's site claims that Office Home and Student 2010 is included. Starter is very limited, including only stripped-down versions of Word and Excel that are ad supported; we'd rather use free office apps such as Google Docs or Open Office.

In the end, the Asus K501J-BCN5's extras are a tough sell for an addtional $170. If you like the design of the Asus K501J laptop as we do, you may be better off going for the cheaper Asus K501J-BBZ5 and forgoing the added hard drive space and backlit keyboard, finding yourself a free office suite and a free AV app such as AVG or ">Avast. Then again, a backlit keyboard is a must-have feature for many, and this is one of the least expensive laptops we've seen it in.The Asus K501J-BNC5 uses a similar textured plastic chassis as past K Series models, which features a subtle hound's-tooth pattern on the keyboard deck. The lid is texture-free and has a satinlike finish to it, which doesn't pick up fingerprints but does attract dust and grime. We slightly prefer the lid on the Asus K501J-BBZ5, which has a glossy finish underlain with the hound's-tooth pattern. The wrist rest below the keyboard is wider than usual, but the large plastic expanses to either side of the touch pad feel rigid, with little to no flex. The hinges, too, are sturdy and hold the display firmly in place.

The keyboard features isolated "Chiclet" keys, popularized by the Apple MacBook, which offer a pleasant typing experience. The keys have backlighting, which you can adjust (there are three levels of brightness) by using the F3 and F4 keys. Asus crams a narrow number pad to the right of the keyboard, which results in no keys being shortened on the keyboard with the exception of the four arrow keys. You may not find the need to use them much; the touch pad supports multitouch gestures. So instead of using the up and down arrows to navigate long Web pages or documents, you can simply swipe your two fingers vertically on the touch pad.The touch pad is surprisingly small, though we never felt especially constrained when directing the cursor to and fro. The mouse buttons are generously proportioned, though they are a bit stiff and emit a loud clack when pressed.
The 15.6-inch LED backlit display features a 1,366x768 resolution, which is what we'd expect from a midsize laptop, and on-screen images are bright and crisp. The glossy screen coating strikes a fine balance between improving the image and keeping glare and reflections to a minimum. Above the display is a low-end 0.3-megapixel Webcam.

The Asus K501J-BCN5 features a pair of Altec Lansing speakers, which emit average sound. They'll suffice for movies and YouTube videos, but music playback is best done with a set of headphones or external speakers.Best Buy's Web site advertises Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 as the preinstalled office app on the Best Buy exclusive Asus K501J-BCN5. We were disappointed to find Office Starter 2010 instead. It includes only Word and Excel, and limited versions at that. Worse, Microsoft ads continually rotate through a small box in the lower-right corner of the apps. Office Home & Student costs $119 for full, ad-free versions of Word and Excel, plus PowerPoint and OneNote. We think a preinstalled office app is less important these days, with Google Docs continually improving and with Open Office offering Word and Excel compatibility. The other piece of software included with the Next Class program is one year of Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper 2010 protection, which costs $35 or $40 if purchased separately.

You may occasionally find one marked down to $499 or so, but otherwise $529 is your barrier to entry for a modern dual-core laptop. The HP G62-225DX carries that price, as does the Asus K501J-BBZ5 and the Dell Inspiron iM501R-1212PBL. If you find these three models next to each other on a retail store shelf, of the three, we'd steer you toward the Asus K501J. Like the Asus K501J, the HP G62-225DX features the Intel Pentium T4500, a dual-core chip clocked at 2.3GHz. It provides ample performance for home users, though the Asus K501J serves up an extra gigabyte of memory. We like the new design of the HP G62-225DX--it looks great and the keyboard is exceedingly comfortable--but a seemingly small annoyance like an overly stiff mouse button can begin to grate on you over time. Also annoying: the lack of multitouch support on the touch pad. Lastly, poor battery life further erodes the HP G62-225DX's appeal; the G62 finished last among eight retail laptops in its price range.

In the end, we'd caution you against being lured in by the HP G62-225DX's good looks when other laptops provide better battery life and a less challenging mousing-and-clicking experience. The Asus K501J-BCN5 does both of those things, but it lacks an HDMI port. The Dell Inspiron iM501R-1212PBL also delivers better battery life and a superior mousing experience to the HP G62-225DX--and it features an HDMI port--but it uses an AMD processor and is the slowest performer of the three. We like the look of the HP G62-225DX, which features the company's new mainstream laptop design. Replacing the glossy surfaces and chrome accents of the HP laptops of yore is a textured plastic chassis with a matte finish. The texture features a pattern of small diamonds or triangles, which stretches across the lid and keyboard deck. The lid and deck are a pewter silver color, and the keyboard and screen bezel are black, offering a pleasing contrast. Its appearance is simple and attractive.

Laptop Battery Dell inspiron n7010d

Earlier this year we reviewed another hybrid ULV/gaming laptop from Asus, the Asus UL50VT-RBBBK05. Featuring a Core 2 Duo ULV processor and switchable Nvidia graphics, we lamented that the machine didn't have better performance for its size. Sadly, even though Asus has upgraded to a new Intel Core i3 ULV processor, the UL80J-BBK5 still underperforms for its price and size class. Because the included i3 processor is an ultra-low-voltage variant, it runs at half the speed of standard voltage Core i3s. The speed gap shows up clearly on our benchmarks, where the UL80J-BBK5 finished dead last against its other mainstream peers in this retail batch. That's not surprising, since the other laptops we've looked at all have standard-voltage processors operating at faster speeds. This laptop is functionally fine for video streaming and handling nearly all everyday tasks we could think of: it feels a bit more sluggish than a normal Core i3 laptop, more of an equivalent in feel to a Core 2 Duo machine. It's a bit misleading for consumers because the sticker on the front of the laptop boasts "Core i3" without specifying that it's in fact a slower-functioning variant. In fact, it actually performs slightly more slowly than the aforementioned Asus UL50VT-RBBBK05 in our benchmark tests, despite the higher price.

The good news, however, is that the gaming graphics part of the Asus UL80J-RBBK5 actually overdelivered on our performance expectations. It only packs an Nvidia GeForce 310M GPU, which is a mainstream graphics processor we've seen in other laptops, but it has double the video memory--1GB as compared to 512MB on most 310M GPUs. That's reflected in fast frame rates on our benchmark tests: Unreal Tournament III ran at a surprising 76.8 frames per second at 1,280x720-pixel resolution. For more modern games, we didn't see quite the same results, but Transformers: War on Cybertron ran at a decent clip and was very playable. Coupled with Nvidia's Optimus graphics-switching technology, the 310M GPU switches itself on and off when needed to save battery life. We applaud that concept, but in practice we found disappointing results on the battery-life front.

Sony's Vaio line has always been a reliable go-to for mid-to-high-end media center laptops because of its sharp designs, decent components, and specialized media software. In our current roundup of back-to-school retail laptops, we're looking at two variations on the same Vaio F model; both are a 16-inch desktop replacement with Blu-ray and discrete graphics. The $1,349 Vaio F126 and the $999 Vaio F12A look nearly identical at first glance. The main visual difference between them is that the F126 has a dark-gray body and the F12A has a light silver-gray body. Both Vaios have a Blu-ray drive and a 1,600x900-pixel resolution display. For an extra $350, Sony gives the F126 a powerful Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce 330M GPU--instead of the Intel Core i3 CPU and Nvidia 310M GPU it gives the less-expensive Vaio F12A--along with more RAM (6GB versus 4GB) and a bigger hard drive (640GB versus 500GB). Comparing the two systems, there's no doubt the expensive F126 is a much more powerful system. The Intel Core i7 is about the best processor you can get in a consumer laptop right now, whereas the Nvidia 330M is a strong graphics performer.

That said, saving $350 and sticking with Sony's $999 F12A version might make more sense. That model still has Blu-ray and its display has the same 16:9 aspect ratio as that of the F126, and its Core i3 processor is more than fast enough for nearly any mainstream computing task. Though gaming isn't the laptop's strong suit, it will work fine for casual games--especially if you don't set the screen resolution terribly high.Next to Apple, Sony's Vaio designs are probably the easiest to pick out of a lineup. The company uses the same distinct tapered-lip body and rounded hinge on nearly all its systems, along with a subtly chromed Vaio logo on the back of the lid. Sony constructed the Vaio V126 from plastic and metal (mostly plastic) with a monochrome dark gray color, giving it a low-key, sophisticated look.

The Vaio's full-size keyboard features flat-topped, widely spaced keys that are similar to what you'd find on MacBooks. It's a nearly universal key style now, but it is one that Sony deserves credit for pioneering years ago. As this is a desktop replacement laptop, there's plenty of room for a full number pad to the right of the keyboard, as well as separate Page Up and Page Down keys. A row of quick-launch and media control buttons sit above the keyboard; these launch Sony's proprietary media software and a built-in Vaio Care tech support app that offers one-stop shopping for troubleshooting and diagnostic tools. The Vaio's keyboard is also backlit, a great extra feature that is not nearly common enough in laptops. Once you get used to having a backlit keyboard, there really is no going back. In this case, the keyboard lights up automatically when the ambient light sensor activates, so you don't have a full-time light source eating away at the battery.
The touch pad is a decent size, but not overly generous. Its left and right mouse buttons are excellent--large and just stiff enough. However, the Vaio's touch pad lacks some of the multitouch gesture controls that you'll find in some less-expensive laptops. The touch pad supports the pinch-to-zoom gesture, but not two-finger scrolling, for example. That's a shame, as the vertical scroll zone on the right side of the pad is set too sensitive by default.

Sony is well known for larding up its laptops with proprietary software--some of which are handy to have, whereas some are useless. In this case, Sony included overlapping media apps: Vaio Picture Motion Browser, Vaio Media Gallery, and Vaio Media Plus. These are all perfectly fine apps, but they are not essential and each app has its own learning curve. However, Sony's Vaio Care tech support software is a winner. You can access all these apps with Sony's version of a software dock. The Vaio Gate, as it's called, sits along the top edge of the screen. For a software dock, it looks nice and has some cool animations when activated; however, it commits the unforgivable sin of popping up what are essentially spammy messages about how great Sony's software and dock are. The messages are controlled via an RSS feed that you can turn off in the Vaio Gate settings, but Sony should have turned it off by default.

The message pop-ups are Sony's most egregious violation of personal laptop space since it preinstalled several gigabytes worth of movies on a previous Vaio laptop's hard drive and then charged you to unlock them for viewing. The Vaio's 16.4-inch display has a 1,600x900-pixel native resolution, which is a definite step up from the standard 1,366x768-pixel resolution you'll find on most up-to-15.4-inch laptops. Sony's display, as usual, looks clear and sharp, but not overly bright. However, for $1,350, we'd expect it to have a true HD display with a 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution--especially since that's the native resolution of Blu-ray discs. The rapidly vanishing ExpressCard slot makes an appearance here, as does eSATA, along with an HDMI port for outputting Blu-ray content to a big-screen TV. The laptop even has a holdover FireWire connection, and, of course, Sony always adds a Memory Stick slot just in case you use its proprietary memory card format. Another nice feature is that the Vaio's headphone jack doubles as an optical audio out port if you're connecting the laptop to a high-end audio system.

Powered by an Intel Core i7 CPU, the Vaio F126 is among the fastest laptops in our back-to-school roundup. Apple's 13-inch MacBook runs some of our specific benchmarks tests extremely well, but those tests use some Mac-centric software, such as iTunes and QuickTime, which can skew the results. In terms of everyday computing and high-end tasks such as video editing, this Vaio is more than enough for anything you'd expect to do on a home computer. If you were to look for the definition of "perfectly average laptop," you'd probably find a picture of the Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030. It has a solid dual-core AMD Turion II processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a decent 14-inch screen that complements its fair-looking, but forgettable, chassis. There is good and bad news here: the good is that this Toshiba laptop is zippier than we expected. The bad is that it has an underwhelming, nearly useless battery life. Its $599 price knocks on the door of slightly higher-priced laptops that offer better performance, and other budget systems--such as the Asus K50IJ-BBZ5--are cheaper and faster. If this laptop were to cost less than $499, we'd say it was a steal; however, at $599 you can find a better system.

Since it lacks an HDMI port, has tinny-sounding speakers, and has an overly thick chassis, we'd skip the L645D if we were shopping for a computer in this price range; however, if you end up with this model, at least take heart that it won't disappoint you performancewise--provided you keep it plugged in to a nearby electrical outlet.Toshiba tends to make its budget products sturdier feeling than that of other manufacturers, and the L645D is definitely a solid-feeling chunk of plastic. It's 1.5 inches thick, which is a bit more than we'd prefer on a 14-inch laptop. Toshiba covers this Satellite with a dark silvery-gray patterned finish. It's a more attractive looking than an overly glossy monochrome finish, but it still looks a bit generic. The screen and surrounding bezel are glossy black, as is the wide and flat keyboard. Even though this Satellite is bulky, it's fairly light; at 4.7 pounds, it doesn't weigh you down.

The flat-style keyboard, which Toshiba has largely moved away from in favor of raised keys on many other models, is quite familiar to us--we saw it in nearly all Satellites last year. We used to complain that this type of keyboard felt squishy and uncomfortable, but for some reason--possibly the extra elevation due to a thicker base--typing on the L645D is actually comfortable. The matte multitouch touch pad lies flush with the rest of the keyboard deck and can get a little lost under your fingers, but it works well. Its large curved buttons beneath the pad are firm and click solidly, but there is no practical reason for them to have a convex shape.
The L645D-S4030 has a 14-inch screen with a 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, like 11- to 15 inch laptops have, and it has a fairly bright LED backlight. For a budget laptop, the Toshiba's screen is crisp and colorful enough to provide decent video playback, and it looked fine when browsing and reading documents. Its exposed stereo speakers, which are above the keyboard, disappointed us. Unlike with higher-end audio components on other Satellites, the audio TV shows and music on the L645D sounded tinny and underpowered, even when maxing the volume out.

The Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030's connection options are a little bare bones. A USB/eSATA combo port is about the only special feature the laptop has. As it doesn't have Bluetooth, HDMI, or ExpressCard, Toshiba limits your expansion options even though the laptop certainly room on its sides and front to fit these features in.The Satellite L645D-S4030 is powered an AMD Turion II dual-core CPU that offers surprisingly good performance for everyday use. It works particularly well in single-task and video playback functions and has nearly comparable performance to an Intel Core i3 processor, handling single-core tasks in our benchmark tests just a little slower some higher-end retail machines do. The Satellite takes a performance score hit as it isn't as efficient when multitasking. However, it is zippy when navigating around Windows 7 and opening programs.

Laptop Battery for Dell batft00l4

Storage comes courtesy of a 60GB hard drive with a rather slow spin speed of 4,200rpm. It's not a huge problem, but the drive's noticeably slower than the 5,200rpm drives you get with many rival netbooks. Additional storage can be added thanks to a SD/SDHC card slot, which also reads Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro and MMC cards. The NC10 isn't the flashiest netbook we've seen, but we're big fans of its contemporary, functional design. Both the black and white versions are attractive, although we're more partial to the black model, as that colour better complements the metallic strip running across the side and front edges. Both versions are finished in a non-glossy coating, which means they're less prone to picking up fingerprint smudges. The dimensions of the NC10's chassis aren't very different to that of other netbooks sporting a 10-inch display. It measures 261 by 30 by 185mm and weighs 1.3kg, so it's only slightly smaller and lighter than the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, which clocks in at 1.4kg and measures 266 by 38 by 191mm. As you'd expect from a device of this type, the NC10 is very easy to slip into a small bag and can be carried almost anywhere.

Connectivity on the NC10 is standard netbook fare. The left side houses two USB ports and one Ethernet port, while the right side is home to yet another USB port, mic and headphone jacks, a VGA output, and a Kensington lock for securing it to a desk. Each of the ports has a label above it on the same level as the keyboard, so you needn't crane your neck or lift the machine from the table to see which port you're jamming a device into.
The NC10's large-ish chassis means Samsung has been able to install a relatively big keyboard. This, like the keyboards on most 10-inch netbooks, is comfortable to use and, with some skill, even allows users to touch-type without sacrificing much speed. The mouse trackpad is very good, too. It lacks multitouch, as you get on some Eee PCs, but has a dedicated vertical scroll strip that makes browsing Web pages simple. The NC10 comes from the same mould as the majority of its netbook brethren. It uses an Intel Atom N270 CPU clocked at 1.6GHz, and 1GB of DDR2 533MHz RAM, plus graphics provided by the Intel 945GS chipset -- all of which is standard fare on devices of this type.

The white version is attractive, but it's the black version that makes us feel like excitable schoolgirls
Storage comes in the form of a 160GB hard drive. That's nowhere near the Asus N10's maximum storage capacity of 320GB, but it gives you enough room for a couple of hundred DivX movies, about 40,000 MP3 files and more images than the average human being should probably own.Attention netbook fans! The Samsung N230 has arrived, bringing with it a whopping 13 hours of battery life.Netbooks may offer serious mobility at a low price but, as many users have found out, their performance leaves a lot to be desired, especially if you frequently run multiple applications at the same time -- and who doesn't these days? A better option may be a more powerful ultra-portable such as the Asus U35Jc, which has a beefier Core i3 processor yet is still less than an inch thick. Our model was supplied by Laptops Direct, where you can buy it for ¡ê650.

The combination of the brushed-aluminium effect used on the lid and the carbon-fibre-style crosshatch pattern of the keyboard surround means the U35Jc is definitely one of the better-looking laptops around. It's very slim, measuring a mere 25mm thick, and supremely light at just 1.9kg, so it's ideal for frequent travellers who need a compact machine for use on the go. The slimness of the design, however, means there's no room for an optical drive. If you use DVDs often, something like the Samsung Q330 might be a better option.
The U35Jc has both a VGA and HDMI socket for connecting it to an external display. The U35Jc isn't exactly laden down with ports, either, although most of the basics are covered. There are three USB ports, an HDMI output and a VGA socket. Along with these, you also get an Ethernet port and SD card reader, which often comes in handy for transferring photos from a digital camera. The laptop lacks an ExpressCard slot, so there's not much room for expansion. In saying that, this isn't a huge issue for many, as most peripherals for laptops, such as mobile broadband dongles, are designed to connect to a USB port anyway. On the wireless front, the laptop manages to pack in Bluetooth support as well as 801.11n Wi-Fi. The largish 320GB hard drive goes some way towards making up for the lack of an optical drive, especially as it provides plenty of room for storing movies in Xvid or DivX format.

Open the lid and you'll find that Asus has followed the trend set by previous consumer-focused laptops -- it uses a keyboard with Scrabble-style keys. Each individual key seems to be stamped out of the chassis. The keys are also quite wide and flat, so despite the laptop's smaller size, the keyboard doesn't feel cramped, and the lack of flex makes it feel solid to type on. There's very little compromise in the layout as well, with only the function keys across the top slightly reduced in size. We also like the large, wide trackpad -- the slightly dimpled surface feels good to the touch. Although the single, long trackpad rocker button doesn't have much travel, it is quite responsive. The Fujitsu LifeBook T900 is a tablet laptop with a 13.3-inch multi-touch display, aimed squarely at business users. Priced at around ¡ê2,300, it's not exactly a cheap option, but does it have the performance and functionality that business users are looking for?

The T900 may feature a multi-touch display, but it's certainly no iPad when it comes to design. For starters, measuring 319 by 244 by 37mm, it's rather chunky. It's also fairly hefty, weighing a considerable 2kg, so your arms are going to get a workout if you're planning on carrying it around all day. The design doesn't help its aesthetic appeal, either. The T900 is very boxy and has a boring matte black and plasticky silver finish. On the other hand, the build quality is decent and the rotating hinge for the screen feels like it's built to last.
A button on the side of the display allows you to quickly change its orientation from landscape to portrait.
The keyboard uses standard, tapered-style keys. Fujitsu hasn't included a numerical keypad, but the individual keys are large and there are no compromises with the layout. The keyboard feels fast and comfortable to type on. Unfortunately, the trackpad isn't so hot. It's a little cramped for our liking, although at least the two trackpad buttons are large and respond to presses with a satisfying click.

What sets this laptop apart from the crowd is its 13.3-inch touchscreen display. This is mounted on a rotating hinge, so you can completely rotate the display and snap it back against the keyboard to use it as a tablet PC, or just leave it pivoted upwards like a traditional laptop. The screen's resolution of 1,280x800 pixels is reasonably good for this type of machine, and its LED backlighting helps colours look bright and vivid.
The T900's rotating hinges mean it can transform from laptop to tablet in a matter of seconds.
The screen uses Wacom technology for its touch input, which means you can use either a pen or your finger. Thankfully, the screen is very accurate and responsive. It also supports multi-touch gestures, so you can pinch to zoom in and out of the display in compatible applications, including Internet Explorer and Windows Photo Viewer. Unfortunately, Fujitsu hasn't loaded any of its own touch applications. The T900 comes preloaded with the Windows 7 Touch Pack, which provides a few, mostly novelty touch applications, such as a zoom-capable 3D globe.

Under the bonnet, the laptop is powered by a fast, dual-core Intel Core i7 processor that races along at 2.67GHz. This is backed up by a healthy 4GB of RAM, which gives the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional plenty of room to strut its stuff. With such a meaty specification, it's hardly surprising that the laptop managed to post a very impressive score of 6,545 in the PCMark05 benchmark test. This type of score shows it's more than capable of handling multitasking with even the most demanding of applications.Dell isn't exactly renowned for producing laptops with exciting designs, so the 13.3-inch Latitude 13's slim dimensions and sexy appearance come as a surprise. That's particularly the case since the standard Windows version of this ultra-portable machine starts at an affordable ¡ê520. Our configuration came in at just ¡ê630.

At a mere 16mm thick, the Latitude 13 is one of the slimmest ultra-portables around at the moment. But it's not just the slimness of the chassis that impresses: the laptop also looks the business, thanks to its twin-tone brushed-aluminium and matte black finish. It's surprisingly sturdy too -- despite its petite dimensions, there's very little give in the chassis and lid. It's not the lightest ultra-portable you can find, but, tipping the scales at 1.5kg, it's hardly going to weigh you down when you're on your travels. The slimness of the design has led to some design compromises. For example, the battery is totally integrated into the chassis and can't be removed. Also, the range of ports on offer is pretty limited. There are only two USB ports, for example, although one of these does at least double up as an eSATA port.
The only other sockets are a VGA connector and an Ethernet port, although there is an ExpressCard slot on the right-hand side. It's perhaps unsurprising that there's no room for a DVD drive, but at least Dell has managed to squeeze in a reasonably roomy 320GB hard drive, so you shouldn't be stuck for storage space.

Accu HITACHI R14DSL

Laptop Battery for Dell j658n

Elsewhere, the U115 follows the well-worn path of other netbooks, which isn't surprising as, cosmetically, it's almost identical to the MSI Wind. The glossy grey finish on the lid is quite appealing, but the design is starting to show its age and it lacks the visual flair of some newer netbooks, such as those from Samsung. That said, we do like the keyboard. Although it's small, its layout makes the most of the available space. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the rather cramped trackpad. If you're lusting after the Apple MacBook Air but can't quite justify the ¡ê1,150 asking price in these cash-strapped times, Acer might have the answer with the slim and light Timeline Aspire 4810T. Priced at a much more affordable ¡ê750 or so, it also boasts amazing battery life. The 4810T may not be as amazingly thin as the Air, but it's still incredibly slim and light compared to most laptops, measuring a mere 29mm at its thickest point and weighing in at just under 2kg. Unfortunately, the 4810T's appearance is let down by the uninspiring grey finish used on the lid and keyboard surround.

Nevertheless, the keyboard is very comfortable to type on, despite using relatively flat keys, like those found on some of the latest Sony Vaio models. We also like the trackpad, which supports multitouch gestures, much like the Air's. This may sound gimmicky, but it's very useful. For example, to scroll up and down through documents, you track a circular motion on the pad, while swiping across it will move you between pages or photos in a slideshow. You can also zoom out of a picture or page by pulling two fingers apart, and zoom in again by pushing them together.
The 14-inch display's glossy coating might cause reflection problems in some lighting conditions Despite its small size, the 4810T's connectivity hasn't been overly compromised. It still manages to cram in both VGA and HDMI ports for outputting video to external displays, as well as three USB ports and a seven-in-one memory card reader. On the wireless front, there's draft-n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR. There's no eSATA port and no ExpressCard slot, however. That's disappointing as it means expansion is limited to USB peripherals only.

Once we'd freed the X340 from its cardboard box, it took us several minutes to realise we were involuntarily drooling all over it. It's absolutely gorgeous to look at, but that's mainly because it borrows so heavily from the Air's wardrobe. It's so slim that it almost puts Victoria Beckham to shame. It measures 19.8mm at its thickest point, and just 6mm at its thinnest, which isn't far away from the Air's figures of 19.4mm and 4mm. It's difficult to notice the extra thickness, because MSI has used the clever technique of sloping the edges of the laptop inwardly towards the centre, which creates the illusion that each edge is razor sharp.
The 13-inch glossy screen, with a 1,366x768-pixel resolution, is well-suited to playing movies
The X340 lacks the Air's sexy aluminium body and instead makes do with plastic. This has the obvious drawback of being less attractive, but it makes the X340 very light. It weighs 1.3kg, which is slightly less than the Air's 1.36kg. It has the edge over the Air in several other areas, too. The extra 0.4mm thickness has allowed MSI to fit in an Ethernet port, two USB ports and an HDMI video output. We'd take that above the ability to fit the laptop inside a manila envelope any day.

While it lacks the ExpressCard readers found on several other Netbooks in this price range, we were pleased to see three USB ports; many Netbooks have only two. With Intel's 1.6GHz Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM, there aren't a lot of surprises with the N110's performance. We've found that systems with AMD's Neo processor and Via Nano CPU--both aimed at a similar Netbook audience--are slightly better at single-app tests, while the Atom performs faster in our multitasking test. For basic tasks such as word processing, Web surfing, and e-mail, an Atom-powered Netbook is more than adequate, as long as you keep your expectations modest. Opening too many browser windows at once, or running several apps simultaneously, for example, can lead to slowdown and stuttering. The N110 ran for 6 hours and 8 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, using the included 6-cell battery. That's fantastic, especially considering that our battery drain test is especially grueling. Only the Acer Aspire One AOD150 did better among Netbooks, and even then only by about 10 minutes.

Samsung includes an industry-standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty with the system. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line, and the Samsung Web site offers an online knowledge base, driver downloads, troubleshooting, and live chat with a support rep.The N120 is large by netbook standards. It isn't as big as the 12-inch NC20, but its 272 by 189 by 30mm chassis is wider and deeper than the NC10's 261 by 185 by 30mm casing. They share the same 1.3kg weight, but the N120 looks lardy next to the uber-sleek Eee PC 1008HA Seashell. The extra 9mm girth has allowed Samsung to fit an even better keyboard than the one on the NC10. Whereas most 10-inch netbook keyboards are approximately 92 per cent the size of a full laptop keyboard, Samsung's tweaked the chassis sufficiently to wedge in a 97 per cent keyboard. The N120's keyboard is larger than the average netbook's
Unfortunately, while the keyboard's bigger, there isn't enough travel in the keys. They simply don't go down far enough when you press them, meaning it can sometimes be unclear whether your keystrokes have actually registered when touch-typing. Still, the keyboard does have silver nano technology -- an antibacterial coating that helps prevent germs from breeding.

The deeper chassis should theoretically have allowed Samsung to fit a larger mouse trackpad, but that's not the case. It uses the same trackpad as the NC10 -- which is fine for the most part -- but a slightly larger model would have been welcome.Connectivity is as we expected on the N120. It packs three USB ports, mic and headphone ports, Ethernet, an SD card reader that lives at the front edge and a 1.3-megapixel webcam above the screen.
What isn't so standard is the speaker arrangement. The N120 is the first netbook to feature an on-board 2.1-channel SRS TrueSurround XT sound system. Stereo speakers occupy each side of the screen, while a third speaker -- a 'subwoofer' -- lives on the underside of the chassis. More on this later. An Atom N270 CPU runs the N120's show. We'd have preferred the slightly quicker N280 chip that powers the Eee PC 1008HE Seashell, but the performance delta between the two isn't so great that we're throwing a tantrum. One gigabyte of 800MHz RAM comes as standard. This can be user-upgraded to 2GB of RAM quite easily, though you'll have to buy a 2GB module yourself and ditch the existing 1GB module in the process.

Storage is typical netbook fare. The N120 ships with a 160GB hard drive, which is capacious enough to stash around 230 standard-definition movies -- more than enough for a transatlantic flight or, better still, a week-long holiday away with your girlfriend's parents. If you're greedy for more storage, it's theoretically possible to swap the 160GB drive for a 250GB one, though a screwdriver and a modicum of skill is required. Our main knock against the original S10 was its anemic three-cell battery, which barely passed the 2-hour mark in our battery drain test--which is not exactly great for a system designed for easy travel. The Lenovo S10 is now available with a six-cell battery, and while it adds a bit of weight and bulk to the system, the battery life is now much more in line with our Netbook recommendations.Battery aside, this is a fairly standard Intel Atom Netbook, with 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Windows XP, and a new quick-launch environment from Splashtop. Systems such as HP's Mini 2140 may have made some additional strides in design with a bigger keyboard and full ExpressCard/54 slot, but the Lenovo's bargain $399 price makes it an attractive option in a crowded field.

With the exception of the extended battery that sticks out from the rear of the system, the system is physically identical to the Lenovo S10 we reviewed in 2008. We liked the chunky, squared-off design, and the IdeaPad S10's chassis is a little thinner than many of the heftier Netbooks out there--although counting the extended battery, it maxes out at 1.5-inches thick--the same as Asus' 10-inch Eee PC 1000HE.There's a decent-sized keyboard (for a Netbook), but we're troubled by the right Shift key, which is shrunk down and awkwardly placed directly to the right of the up-arrow key. The touch pad is small but usable, with a similar (but less extreme) wide design to the HP Mini 1000, although in this case, the mouse buttons are below the touch pad, not on either side. The included ExpressCard/34 slot, which is rare on smaller systems, is useful for adding aftermarket extras, such as a mobile broadband modem.

Another new feature is the Splashtop-powered quick-start environment, which gives you access to a Web browser, media files, and other applications before you boot into Windows. These secondary operating systems can be good for saving battery life and quickly getting online without waiting for XP to boot up, but functionality is limited, some configuration options (such as wireless networking) use menus that may be unfamiliar to Windows users, and, in the long run, they usually don't boot up that much faster than just going into Windows. The 10.2-inch wide-screen display has a 1,024x600-pixel native resolution, which is standard for 10-inch Netbooks. The matte screen is good for avoiding glare, although some more design-oriented Netbooks now offer edge-to-edge screen glass for a slicker look. With Intel's now-standard 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, specifically designed for low-power Netbooks, the Lenovo S10 performed on par with other Atom-powered Netbooks, although it had an edge in our multitasking test. Systems with newer Netbook-style CPUs, such as the HP Pavilion dv2 and Samsung NC20 (with the AMD Neo and Via Nano CPUs, respectively), were faster in single-application tests, such as iTunes.

For Web surfing, e-mail, and working on office documents, which is 90 percent of what most people do on their laptops anyway, Netbooks such as the S10 perform adequately, as long as one's expectations are kept modest. The original Lenovo S10 offered a disappointing 2 hours and 13 minutes of battery life on our video playback battery drain test, using its three-cell battery. This new six-cell version was much better, scoring 4 hours and 1 minute on the same test. That's a big improvement, and addresses our main problem with the S10. Still, some Netbooks, such as the Acer Aspire One AOD150, can run for even longer.Asus' Eee PC 1008HA Seashell (not to be confused with the Eee PC 1000HE) is a small, light and sexy device aimed at the fashion-conscious netbook fan who puts portability slightly above performance. It's available to buy now for around ¡ê375.Let's get one thing out of the way. The Seashell doesn't look anything like a mollusc -- not even remotely. It's shiny, we'll give you that, but, if anyone can find one bit of this netbook that looks even remotely like a seashell, we'll give them a tenner and recommend them for membership in the Marine Conservation Society.

One thing that's definitely not up for debate is that the machine's styling is beautiful. We love absolutely everything about this device. The glossy black finish, the gently tapering lid, and the wedge-shaped profile all contribute to an overall design that's more aesthetically pleasing than that of rival netbooks. We're not sure whether it's quite as gorgeous as the Eee PC S101, but it makes most other netbooks look like they were cobbled together by blind goat herders. The Seashell's trackpad is a joy to use, thanks to its tactile dimples
The Seashell is one of the thinnest and lightest netbooks on the market. It's a mere 26mm at its thickest point and tips the scales at just 1.1kg. That might not sound much lighter than the 1.4kg 1000HE, but the difference is significant when carrying the Seashell over the course of an entire day. It's simply easier to manage than other 10-inch machines.Because it's so svelte, Asus has had to make some sacrifices with the machine's connectivity -- the Seashell has just two USB ports, instead of the three we'd expect from this sort of device. Also, in an attempt to maintain the sleek lines, all its ports are recessed slightly and hidden behind flaps. This makes them slightly trickier to access, and some larger USB keys simply won't fit without an extension cable.

Accu HITACHI UB 5D

Laptop Battery for Dell 312-0233

2. Control your power
Adjust your notebook's power settings to find a comfort zone where you're using as little power as possible with no interference in your computing tasks. The path to the control panel will vary according to your operating system and setup, but for Windows XP Home and Pro users, follow these steps: Go to Start / Control Panel / Performance And Maintenance / Power Options. Set the LCD screen to go off after 5 minutes of inactivity, let the hard drive stay active for 20 minutes, and store the system's contents in RAM when it shuts down. If your notebook goes to sleep too soon, adjust the settings.
Adjusting power and other options in the Power Options Properties dialogue will improve your battery life.
3. Dim all the lights
Your LCD's backlight uses up to 10 watts of power, a huge battery drain. Lower the screen's brightness to where it's comfortable to view without squinting. In addition to the Power Options settings detailed above, most notebooks have convenient function keys for controlling screen brightness. Look for the function key with the brightness icon and a down arrow next to it (this is the F6 key on many systems). Also, some new notebooks, such as Apple's MacBook Pro, adjust the screen's brightness to suit the conditions.

4. Be battery smart/> Know how much power remains by checking the battery power icon in the system tray. Or buy a notebook with a battery that features a charge-level LED gauge on the battery itself so that you can just flip over the system to see how much battery life remains. If you really want to see tons of detail on what your battery is doing and how much life is left, take battery monitoring to the next level with PassMark's BatteryMon utility.5. Double or triple your pleasure
Some notebooks let you double up with a second battery that fits into a modular bay, nearly doubling runtime. A few systems can even take as many as three batteries, if you include the docking station, also called a media slice. The IBM ThinkPad X41, for instance, can be fitted with a large-capacity battery in place of its standard battery, and it has a connector for an additional bottom-mounted external Battery.

6. Charge when you can
Before leaving the home or the office with your notebook, fully charge all of your batteries. If you're travelling, look around for a wall outlet to give your batteries a refresher charge when you can, because every little bit helps. Some third-party devices will help you charge on the road, such as iGo's Juice 70. This versatile device does it all: it's a regular AC adapter, as well as a car converter, and it will work on many airplanes. With the right plug, it can even charge your phone or handheld.7. Check the CMOS battery
If you have to reset your notebook's clock or your system BIOS, you may have a bad backup battery. Also called the CMOS battery; this secondary battery, which powers the clock when the system is not in use, can sap the main battery power if it's dead. The good news is that this battery is inexpensive. The bad news is that you'll likely have to dig around inside the system to find it. Some vendors put the backup battery under the memory chip slots, while others stash the CMOS battery under or next to the main battery. Check your manual or the vendor's technical support Web site for details.

8. Shut down unnecessary programs
When you're running your notebook on battery power, turn off devices and programs you don't need. When not connected to a wireless hot spot, turn off the Wi-Fi hardware. If you access wireless networks with a PC Card, remove it when not connected. Listening to music via the CD-ROM drive and watching DVDs are also big battery drains.9. Start with complete battery drains
To ensure long-term battery vitality, do the following: when first using your notebook on battery power, let the battery completely drain before you recharge it. Don't recharge when the battery is only half drained. Do that for at least the first two sessions. Also, avoid temperature extremes. Don't leave a notebook in a hot car or use it outdoors in extremely cold weather; hot batteries discharge very quickly, and cold ones can't create as much power.

10. Terminal care
Make sure the battery contacts that connect your cells to the notebook are straight and clean and free of grime, because the last thing you need is a bad connection. Most contacts are flat, copper-coloured metal strips, but they might be hidden between pieces of protective plastic. Every six months or so, give the contacts a cleaning with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to remove electron-sapping dirt and grime. A bad connection can keep you from getting the most out of a battery.Cells are individual cylindrical compartments in a battery that produce power. As many as 12 cells are used in a notebook battery. This refers to the amount of energy a battery contains. The typical notebook battery has between 2,000 and 6,000 milliamp hours (mAh) of capacity. See milliamp hours. This is a battery that can be used repeatedly by adding power to it when the cells are drained. These batteries typically can go through a few hundred charge cycles before they start to lose the ability to hold a charge.

Acer's new Timeline series of laptops, including the 13-inch Aspire 3810T, aims to combine the thin, sexy designs of more expensive laptops with cost-saving, low-power processors. But that's a direction many PC makers are moving in, thanks to budget-friendly CPUs such as the AMD Neo and Intel CULV family, so Acer needed a bigger hook, such as the Timeline's claims of all-day, 8-hour computing. We generally take such claims with a grain of salt, as they usually require a fairly rigid set of preconditions: Wi-Fi turned off, screen brightness turned way down, and so on. However, the $899 Aspire Timeline 3810T managed to impress us with its 5-plus-hour battery life in our much more rigid testing regimen (and it would probably get closer to 8 hours under casual use). Add in the decent industrial design, light weight, and reasonable (at least compared with other slim 12- and 13-inch laptops) performance, and it all adds up to a compelling 13-inch alternative.

Note that Apple's basic 13-inch MacBook offers similar battery life for only $100 more, plus includes an optical drive, but that system weighs more and has less RAM and a smaller hard drive, making for an interesting tossup between the two. While perhaps not as striking at the MSI X340, another recent inexpensive, thin, 13-inch computer, the Timeline's gray metal lid and overall sturdy construction give it a more professional feel. It's slightly lighter than Dell's upscale 13-inch Adamo, and the backlit LED screen helps keep it fairly thin (but not in the same category as the MacBook Air or Adamo). The large, flat keys will feel familiar to anyone who has used an Apple or Sony Vaio laptop, and typing felt comfortable and natural. The touch pad is smaller than you'd find on a MacBook, but still usable. We weren't crazy about the single rocker bar that acted as the left and right mouse buttons; besides simply preferring separate mouse buttons, it stiff and unresponsive--you have to make sure to give it a solid press in order to register. The touch pad understands a few multitouch gestures, such as pinching to zoom a photo, which is useful, but the implementation is nowhere near as seamless as what you'd find on a MacBook.

Above the keyboard, a small row of touch-sensitive quick-launch buttons control the Wi-Fi antenna, a built-in backup program, and a power-saving preset.
The 13.3-inch wide-screen LED offers a 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, which is standard for a 16:9 screen this size. More common are 16:10 displays at 1,280x800 pixels. Text and icons were highly readable, and while still glossy, the screen was not as susceptible to glare as most. The two big things you'll find missing on the Timeline 3810T are an optical drive and Bluetooth (although both are available in related 14- and 15-inch configurations). We're perfectly happy to skip the DVD burner, but Bluetooth is very handy for tethering a 3G smartphone, or for connecting a travel mouse.Intel's single-core SU series CPUs (part of the Consumer Ultra-Low-Voltage line, or CULV) have been generally lackluster performers, but the dual-core U9400 version in the Timeline 3810T provides a much more usable overall experience. It easily out-performed the single-core MSI X340, and in anecdotal use it felt perfectly capable of performing standard tasks smoothly, such as Web surfing, working on office documents, and media playback. Of course, adding 4GB of RAM also helps--both the MSI X340 and Dell Adamo had only half that.

The Timeline's main selling point is its battery life, and while we didn't get the advertised 8 hours, we were still very impressed. The 3810T ran for 5 hours and 29 minutes on our video playback battery drain test. That test is particularly intense, so you can expect longer life from casual Web surfing and office use. That's about 30 minutes more than Apple's $999 white MacBook (but about 20 minutes less than the 13-inch MacBook Pro, with Apple's improved nonremovable battery). One of the most common criticisms levelled against netbooks is that they're essentially all the same. MSI is out to prove the critics wrong with the Wind U115 Hybrid. Not only does it have both solid-state and hard disk drives, but it's also got a graphics chip that can help speed up high-definition video decoding. With a price tag of around ¡ê460, standing out from the netbook crowd obviously doesn't come cheap, so is the extra outlay worth it?

Under the bonnet, this netbook differs from rival models in a number of significant ways. Firstly, it uses Intel's new GMA 500 graphics chip, designed to speed up HD video decoding -- something that the vast majority of netbooks on the market today struggle with. The idea is that, when you watch a video that's encoded in HD, instead of the processor handling the load, it passes the hard work over to the graphics chip, leaving the processor free to keep other background tasks running without any slowdown. It's worth noting, though, that this decoding acceleration only works on video that's encoded in MPEG-2, VC-1, WMV 9 or H.264, and the software video player also has to support the graphics chipset for it to work, so you don't get the benefit of the hardware decoding under all circumstances.
The addition of the GMA 500 graphics chip also means that MSI has had to use a slightly different main processor. It's still an Intel Atom CPU, but, instead of the more commonly used N270, it's a Z530. This is clocked at the same 1.6GHz as the N270 though, so you won't notice any difference in performance.

The other big difference between the U115 and other netbooks is the presence of two storage drives. MSI has kitted out the U115 with an 8GB SSD which is used to store the Windows XP operating system and most of your program files, and a 160GB HDD which can be used for storing larger files, like movies and music. This way, the system spends most of its time accessing the SSD, which is much easier on the battery, and only calls the HDD into play when it needs to fetch your documents. MSI has also implemented an eco mode. When you turn this on, it forces the netbook to rely solely on the SSD drive in other to eke out as much life from the battery as possible. But how does the combination of SSD and HDD work in practice? Brilliantly, is the short answer. The U115 has simply amazing battery life. In Battery Eater's intensive Classic test, it managed to keep going for an astonishing 7 hours and 9 minutes.

HP OmniBook XE4500 Battery

Netbooks are often so similar in terms of specification that the only room left for manufacturers to distinguish their offerings is design. And it's design that Samsung has focused on with the N310. This netbook is certainly rather striking when you first take it out of the box. Available in either orange, blue or black, what really makes it stand out from the crowd is its beautifully rounded corners. They not only look great but make the netbook easy to slide into a bag or case. Also, rather than a glossy finish on the lid, the N310 sports a type of rubberised plastic that really feels like it will last.
Inside the N310 looks very classy too. We love the borderless look on the 10.1-inch display, with the glossy cover running all the way to the edges of the lid. The display itself is also first-class. Colours look as good as or better than on any netbook screen we've seen. It's also very bright and, thanks to the 1,024x600-pixel resolution, text is rendered very crisply.

The N310's lid is coated with a sort of rubberised plastic. It's a welcome change from the typical glossy finish
The keyboard is also excellent. Samsung has opted for a design that uses isolated keys -- rather like those of Apple's MacBook Air -- and, despite its small size, the keyboard is surprisingly comfortable to type on. The roomy trackpad is also top-class.The simple fact of notebook life is that systems simply don't run for as long on their batteries as we'd like -- even long-lived notebooks, such as Sony's VAIO VGN-TX27GP, last only 5.5 hours on a single battery. To help you make smart decisions about the notebooks you buy and the way you use them, we demystify today's battery technologies and examine the fuel cell technology that might power your next notebook. We also provide 10 tips for getting the most out of your system's current battery, along with a glossary of key terms.

We can't make a battery last forever, but we can help to make sure that you get the most out of every electron. With four battery technologies onstage and one waiting in the wings, there's sure to be a battery to suit your needs.Although all batteries are not created equal, they all have the ability to turn chemical energy into electric current to power electronic devices -- from tiny digital music players to big notebooks. As with the battery in a car, a chemical reaction inside a notebook's battery frees electrons to flow from the positive terminal to the negative terminal, creating enough current to run the device. The old-timer of mobile battery technologies is the nickel-cadmium cell (NiCd), once the mainstay of notebook design. Unfortunately, NiCd cells can only carry enough power to run a system for about an hour, and they contain toxic cadmium, which makes them hard to dispose of.

And despite their ability to be recharged about 1,000 times, nickel-cadmium cell batteries also suffer from something called 'memory effects'; over time, they lose the ability to hold a complete charge. Luckily, lighter and more powerful battery designs have surpassed the NiCd, and today, NiCds are used mostly in toys and inexpensive cordless phones. About a decade ago, most notebook makers switched to nickel-metal-hydride batteries (NiMH). Not only can these batteries hold about 40 percent more power, they aren't as susceptible to memory problems as NiCds are, and they are more environmentally friendly. On the downside, you can recharge them only about 200 times versus 400 charge cycles for newer designs.

Today, the lithium-ion cell (also known as Li-ion), which holds roughly twice the capacity of a nickel-cadmium battery, rules the notebook battery roost. Used on most notebooks, handhelds, and mobile phones, lithium-ion technology can hold a lot of power, but its exotic materials make it expensive. Part of the credit for its success goes to a tiny controller chip embedded in each battery that adjusts how quickly the battery discharges and prevents it from overcharging.Look for lithium-polymer (Li-poly) technology to make its way into mobile phones, handhelds and notebooks in the near future. Extremely light and malleable, these batteries are capable of providing nearly as much power as lithium-ion cells but can also be shaped to fit into a device's hidden nooks and crannies. For a look at another battery technology, check out the next section on fuel cells.

The traditional battery's days may be numbered. Thanks to recent advances in fuel-cell technology, your next notebook (or maybe the one after that) could run for days on a single charge. These next-generation batteries, which contain chemicals such as methanol stored in small tanks, certainly aren't your average power source. More like tiny chemical plants, different types of fuel cells are currently used in space shuttles, experimental eco-friendly cars and small power plants. NEC is developing a fuel cell for a notebook that could provide a mind-boggling 40 hours of battery life.
NEC is developing a fuel-cell notebook. This is a prototype and we're unsure if or when it will hit the market.
So how does a fuel cell work? "The fuel cell is based on the reverse principle of water electrolysis ... [Fuel cells] work by having hydrogen and oxygen react to generate electricity", said Yoshimi Kubo, senior research manager overseeing NEC's project to create a fuel cell-powered notebook (prototype pictured above).

Methanol, or methyl alcohol, is NEC's fuel of choice, and Kubo has created a prototype notebook that can run for five hours on about a pint of 10 percent fuel. When the tank is dry, forget about a power cable, because the fuel cell wants more methanol. Just pour in a small bottle of fuel, and it's ready to go. Rather than carrying a bagful of batteries on a long flight, all you'd need is a bottle of methanol -- but be careful: methanol is a poison. For now, packaging is the biggest obstacle that fuel cells face. "Currently, the fuel cell cannot fit into a standard battery location", Kubo said. "It will need further development in order to fit into a notebook, and miniaturisation is a challenge we're facing". According to Kubo, NEC is attacking this problem from three directions: upping the concentration of methanol; using a low-power processor; and increasing the tank size.

By contrast, Hitachi is thinking smaller. Along with Tokai, a Japanese maker of cigarette lighters, Hitachi is working on a fuel cell-powered handheld. About the size of a AA battery, the fuel cell contains 57g of 20 percent methanol fuel, and it powers a handheld computer for 6 to 8 hours. Before its planned launch (which was originally slated for 2005 but has since been pushed back), the companies will try to boost runtime by using 30 percent methanol fuel, making a 12-hour handheld a distinct possibility. All this adds up to big business over the next decade, according to Daniel Benjamin, a marketing analyst at Allied Business Intelligence, based in Oyster Bay, New York. "Fuel cells will provide a clean source of energy, but cost and technical issues will pose significant barriers". Despite this, he says that by 2011 there could be 200 million fuel cells of all sizes and capacities sold, powering everything from MP3 players to notebooks.By then, we may be able to kiss our batteries goodbye, along with the eternal search for a power outlet to charge them -- although finding fuel may create another problem.

The notebook you buy may help determine the amount of uptime you can expect on an air flight. How come? Even though the CPU consumes about half the notebook's total power, recent advances in processor technology have eased the burden placed on a system's battery. Now, thanks to Intel's Core Duo and Centrino technology, for instance, notebooks can run faster and longer on the same batteries they used to use. Here's the low-down on which processors let notebooks last the longest.Intel Core Duo (part of the Centrino Duo package)
Without a doubt, the Core Duo is the battery-life champ. With two processor cores, two megabytes of Level 2 cache, and the ability to streamline operations, it balances raw power with extensive battery life. Toss in an Intel-made Wi-Fi radio and an Intel chipset, and the Core Duo is part of the Centrino Duo triad.

Intel's Centrino Duo mobile platform (previously codenamed Napa) comprises the Core Duo (Yonah) processor, the PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless networking module and the 945 Express chipset.Running at up to 2.16GHz, Core Duo notebooks run rings around the competition, and many offer over four hours of battery life.Intel's Core Solo processor is very similar to the Core Duo, however, it uses single as opposed to dual processor cores. This results in decreased raw performance, but it also means that the chip consumes less power -- 5.5-27W compared to the Core Duo's 15-31W. The Core Solo runs at speeds of up to 1.83GHzThe Turion 64 X2 is the Core Duo's main competitor. Like Intel's version, it offers two processor cores for increased performance whilst multi-tasking. It also boasts AMD's PowerNow! power management technology, which AMD says can extend system battery life by up to 65%. Built-in anti-virus protection is included, and the processor comes in speeds up to 2GHz. Its power consumption is slightly higher than that seen on Core Duo processors, and ranges between 31 and 35 watts.

The Turion 64 is a cut-down version of the Turion 64 X2. It offers all of the same features as the X2, but like Intel's Core Solo, only includes a single processor core. Its power consumption ranges between 25 and 35 watts, with speeds up to 2.4GHz.With a little power conservation and some smart moves, you can greatly improve your notebook's battery life. Here are our top 10 tips for getting the most out of your batteries.1. Think small
If extra-long battery life matters to you, forget about that huge, 17-inch screen notebook with the top-speed processor -- it probably won't run for more than two hours. When you're buying your next notebook, think small and consider an ultra-portable or a thin-and-light system. An Intel Core Duo processor uses about half as much power as a Pentium 4, a 12.1in. screen uses 50 percent less juice than a 17-inch model, and getting a 4,200rpm hard drive instead of a 5,400rpm model can mean an extra 15 to 20 minutes of battery life.

When it comes to hard work, however, the ATIV Book 9 Lite struggles. The A6-1450¡¯s four cores run at a slow 1GHz, boosting up to a maximum of 1.4GHz, and in our Real World Benchmarks it managed an overall score of just 0.35. That lags behind most budget laptops, and it¡¯s even a fair way off the pace of older Sandy Bridge low-voltage chips. Graphics performance is below par too ¨C an average of 24fps in our least taxing Crysis benchmark indicates that gaming potential is limited to the most undemanding titles.Microsoft has issued a detailed denial to accusations that Windows 7 is harming laptop batteries.Several blogs and forums have claimed that Windows 7 is having a detrimental effect on laptop batteries, with the operating system issuing repeated warnings that a previously healthy battery needs replacing. However, in a detailed blog post on the Engineering Windows 7 site, Microsoft claims that there's no fault with the OS.

Windows 7 is neither incorrectly reporting on battery status nor in any way whatsoever causing batteries to reach this stateWindows 7 is neither incorrectly reporting on battery status nor in any way whatsoever causing batteries to reach this stateTo the very best of the collective ecosystem knowledge, Windows 7 is correctly warning batteries that are in fact failing and Windows 7 is neither incorrectly reporting on battery status nor in any way whatsoever causing batteries to reach this state, Windows chief Steven Sinofsky states. In every case we have been able to identify the battery being reported on was in fact in need of recommended replacement.Microsoft says the confusion has been caused by a new warning system in Windows 7, that's designed to warn users when a battery's nearing the end of its useful life.Windows 7 makes use of a feature of modern laptop batteries which have circuitry and firmware that can report to Windows the overall health of the battery, Sinofsky writes. This is reported in absolute terms as Watt-hours (W-hr) power capacity. Windows 7 then does a simple calculation to determine a percentage of degradation from the original design capacity. In Windows 7 we set a threshold of 60% degradation (that is the battery is performing at 40% of its designed capacity) and in reading this Windows 7 reports the status to you.

At this point, for example, a battery that originally delivered five hours of charge now delivers, on average, approximately two hours of charge. The Windows 7 notification is a battery meter icon and notification with a message 'Consider replacing your battery'. This notification is new to Windows 7 and not available in Windows Vista or Windows XP.Sinofsky claims Microsoft has thoroughly examined telemetry from Windows 7 customers and held lengthy discussions with key PC manufacturers to ensure that Windows 7 isn't harming batteries. Our OEM partners have utilised their telemetry (call center, support forums, etc.) and have let us know that they are seeing no activity beyond what they expect, he claims.

In laptop mode, the Fit 14A is refreshingly free from compromises. There¡¯s a full-sized, backlit keyboard and a wide, buttonless touchpad, and while we¡¯re not keen on the keyboard surround¡¯s sharp edges, the wristrest is deep and wide enough not to dig into your wrists in normal usage. The 14in touchscreen is a cut above. Both multitouch and pressure-sensitive stylus input are on the cards, and the Full HD resolution makes for pin-sharp clarity. Put to the test with our X-Rite colorimeter, the Sony¡¯s IPS panel provided a maximum brightness of 322cd/m[sup]2[/sup] and a contrast ratio of 685:1, and its palette of delicious, bold colours covered almost every corner of the sRGB gamut. If there¡¯s a criticism to be made it¡¯s a minor one: the crisscross pattern of the digitising layer is faintly visible. Thanks to the presence of Intel¡¯s Haswell processors, there¡¯s also ample power for most applications. While the cheapest ¡ê699 model makes do with a Haswell-based Pentium chip, the 1.7GHz Pentium 3556U, our review unit came equipped with a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-4200U, 8GB of DDR3L RAM and a 1TB hard disk ¨C a combination that scored a respectable 0.67 in our Real World Benchmarks. Should you so wish, though, it¡¯s possible to improve the performance ¨C and send the price soaring to ¡ê1,354 ¨C by equipping the Fit 14A with a 512GB SSD and Core i7 CPU.

Paul Butland, 32, is a hoarder. This being 2013, his hoarding takes up almost no physical space, but his digital home is stuffed to bursting with junk he never uses.I started by ripping my whole CD collection years ago, and I¡¯ve never really stopped, he explains. Right now, I have around 120GB of music on my hard disk, and ¨C I probably shouldn¡¯t say this ¨C thanks to BitTorrent, my movie and TV collection is about ten times that. I also keep all the raw photos I take, which I don¡¯t really need to do, and I¡¯ve no idea how big my games library is right now. It¡¯s pretty big.Paul might sit at the bulging end of the hoarder scale, but his situation isn¡¯t unusual. The rise of one-click downloads, fibre internet connections and hard disks with capacities in the terabytes have combined to make us blas¨¦ about what we accumulate on our PCs. This was fine until SSDs came along and forced us to think once more about what we¡¯re storing.I started by ripping my whole CD collection years ago, and I¡¯ve never really stoppedI started by ripping my whole CD collection years ago, and I¡¯ve never really stopped

A new laptop purchase can induce a headache. A MacBook Pro with 768GB of flash storage will set you back ¡ê560 more than the 256GB model. Back in the real world, most people¡¯s budget for an Ultrabook is unlikely to stretch beyond a 256GB or even a 128GB SSD, which isn¡¯t nearly enough for someone like Paul. His headache worsens in mobile, where every tablet and smartphone comes with its own bundled dilemma: how do you decide which parts of your music collection you¡¯ll want to listen to?While we wait for SSD capacities to catch up with our excesses, there are ways around the problem. In this feature, we¡¯ll look at the pros and cons of a variety of alternative storage options, from the simplicity of an external hard disk to the always-on convenience of the many cloud services set up for just this kind of scenario. So, don¡¯t bin that back catalogue just yet.An external hard disk is the most basic storage solution. It can sit in a drawer and gather dust before being whipped out and plugged in when a file is needed. It¡¯s most suitable for bulk-storing a single user¡¯s media collection, and for a straightforward dump of excess data, it¡¯s hard to beat.

The key things to look for when choosing a drive are the capacity and the connection: we¡¯re dealing with huge amounts of data, so it¡¯s essential to get one with USB 3 for the best possible transfer speeds (provided you have a USB 3 port on your laptop, of course) and compatibility with a wide range of devices. We recently compared the performance of a LaCie Rugged drive using USB 3 and USB 2, and the results were emphatic. Copying a 5GB folder to the drive took 4mins 15secs over USB 2 and 1min 56secs over USB 3; reading a 1GB set of photos from the external drive took 42 seconds over USB 2 and 19 seconds via USB 3; and the maximum measured transfer speeds were 116MB/sec and 42MB/sec respectively.Switching to Thunderbolt only saw slight performance gains, so unless you use only MacBooks, we¡¯d recommend sticking with USB 3 drives ¨C particularly since they¡¯ll also work with USB 2 devices.

The days of needing desktop drives for large capacities of data are long gone. Today, you can buy 2.5in external disks that hold up to 2TB, and the prices are falling all the time. Our A-Listed 2TB Western Digital My Passport with USB 3 from Amazon will set you back ¡ê100 (all prices inc VAT), with 1TB drives dipping as low as ¡ê58. If you don¡¯t mind a bulkier 3.5in model, you can get a 3TB Seagate drive for only ¡ê84.It's shiny, it's small and it's very, very fast. The Alienware M11x promises to be the first ultraportable laptop that's also capable of gaming on the move. We take a closer look with a hands-on demo at Dell's suite at CES 2010.The HP Chromebook 11 has been pulled from shelves after complaints the laptop's charger was overheating. The Chromebook 11 is HP's second attempt at a budget laptop running Chrome's OS, and was priced at ¡ê229 at launch. It first arrived in October, and started to disappear from retailers' websites yesterday.

Google and HP are pausing sales of the HP Chromebook 11 after receiving a small number of user reports that some chargers included with the device have been damaged due to overheating during use, said Google's vice-president of product management, Caesar Sengupta. The companies are now working with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to address the issue. In the meantime, customers who have purchased an HP Chromebook 11 should not use the original charger provided with the product, Sengupta said.In the interim they may continue using their HP Chromebook 11 with any other Underwriters Laboratories-listed micro-USB charger ¨C for example, one provided with a tablet or smartphone, he added.Panasonic's Toughpad FZ-G1 won our heart back in 2013, and now it has a little brother to keep it company - the 7in FZ-M1. Cut from the same ultra-tough, ruggedised cloth as its 10.1in stablemate, the FZ-M1 delivers Core i5 processing power, Windows 8.1 and a range of accessories that allow it to adapt to almost any situation.

As you'd expect from a Toughpad, this new model feels like an absolute bruiser. Slender and lightweight aren't words you'd use to describe the FZ-M1 - this 7in tablet measures 18mm thick and weighs 544g.
And you can try to twist or bend the chassis at your wrists' peril - to describe the build as rock-solid is something of an understatement. There is no tougher compact tablet out there. With a design that's certified to survive the range of US MIL-STD-810G tests, the FZ-M1 is capable of withstanding drop, shock, vibration, rain and dust, and both freezing and extremely hot temperatures. The sealed, fanless design also earns an IP65 rating for dust- and water-resistance.
Asz44444 strip of toughened rubber runs around the tablet's edges, elastomer inserts thickening it at the corners to provide extra protection from drops. The single USB 3 port and 3.5mm headset jack are sealed behind a waterproof flap, as is the tablet's 19v input.

The UK¡¯s Information Commissioner routinely fines organisations that fail to protect sensitive data. While the ICO doesn¡¯t specifically state on which grounds it will deem data to be insecurely held, its guidance on security measures companies should take to protect personal data states that firms should protect computers ¡°by downloading the latest patches or security updates, which should cover vulnerabilities¡± ¨C something that soon simply won¡¯t be possible with Windows XP.Large companies that haven¡¯t yet begun the process of migration from Windows XP will face an uphill task to have the job completed by the April cut-off point ¨C they should waste no time in contacting one of HP¡¯s migration experts to talk through their options. Such companies may be tempted to deploy sticking-plaster solutions to keep running applications that require Windows XP, but many of the proposed workarounds are short-term solutions that carry risks of their own.One of the chief reasons for continuing to run Windows XP is to support applications that rely on Internet Explorer 6. One workaround is to virtualise IE 6 using Windows Server 2003 (the only Microsoft OS that officially supports the virtualisation of the old browser), but support for Server 2003 ends in July 2015, making this a short-term solution, at best.

Other suggestions include disconnecting Windows XP machines from the Internet, and using them solely for the applications they¡¯re required for. Yet, with malware capable of spreading over an internal network or via removable storage, simply disconnecting the machine from the Internet doesn¡¯t make it secure. Forcing employees to hop between two machines or operating system environments is hardly the most productive use of their time, either. A comprehensive migration plan is the only sensible solution. Perhaps the best reason to migrate your PCs from Windows XP is to take advantage of all the technologies that simply aren¡¯t available for the outdated operating system.Windows 7 and 8 PCs benefit from Windows¡¯ built-in BitLocker encryption, for example, allowing IT administrators to ensure that sensitive data stored on laptops or removable drives is fully encrypted and not accessible to thieves if the device is stolen.

Then there are useful and potentially cost-saving Windows Server technologies that only work with PCs running Windows 7 or above. Branche Cache, for instance, could cut down on bandwidth bills in remote offices by storing copies of files downloaded from the company¡¯s central server locally, so that each user attempting to access the file doesn¡¯t have to download the file afresh. Direct Access, meanwhile, allows remote workers to securely access the company¡¯s network without requiring dedicated VPN software, which not only reduces the software bill, but the support costs incurred when employees forget their VPN password or can¡¯t get the client to work properly.Work Folders, introduced with Windows Server 2012 R2, provides Dropbox-like functionality, allowing employees to keep synchronised copies of work files on both the company server and their PCs, whether that be the desktop PC that sits on their desk, or the laptop they take out for client meetings. Again, however, only on Windows 7 or Windows 8 devices.

Finally, if your company deploys tablets to remote workers, they really would be better off with Windows 8, the first version of the operating system that was actually designed from the ground-up with touch controls as a prime consideration. Not only does Windows 8 offer tablet-specific features ¨C such as tappable picture-password logins, a finger-friendly Start menu, and excellent handwriting recognition ¨C but it has the full power of the Windows desktop behind it, allowing companies to continue to run business applications designed for previous incarnations of Windows. An analyst firm has slashed by half its 2012 sales prediction for Ultrabooks, but lower prices and better chips could mean they eventually grab a third of the laptop market.Ultrabooks first landed last year, as part of a $300m marketing campaign by Intel to boost innovation in the laptop market, push up margins for PC makers, and help the chip maker fight back against ARM, which has enjoyed greater success in the tablet market.Analyst firm IHS iSuppli initially predicted 22m Ultrabooks would ship globally this year, but has slashed that to 10.3m, with more than half shipping in the fourth quarter.

With IDC predicting 209m laptops will ship this year, that means Ultrabooks are grabbing less than 5% of the market - well below Intel's hope of 40% market share by the end of this year.Shipments will pick up in 2013, however, with IHS expecting shipments of 44m - down from its first prediction of 61m."So far, the PC industry has failed to create the kind of buzz and excitement among consumers that is required to propel Ultrabooks into the mainstream," said Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for compute platforms at IHS. "This is especially a problem amid all the hype surrounding media tablets and smartphones. When combined with other factors, including prohibitively high pricing, this means that Ultrabook sales will not meet expectations in 2012."However, Stice suggested those problems can be easily overcome, and by 2016, IHS expects 95m Ultrabooks will ship - grabbing almost a third of the total laptop market worldwide.

In order for Ultrabooks to succeed, IHS said manufacturers and retailers need to get closer to the $600 to $700 price range."With the economy languishing, Ultrabook sellers may have trouble finding buyers at the current pricing, especially with fierce competition from new mobile computing gadgets such as the iPhone 5, Kindle Fire HD and forthcoming Microsoft Surface," Stice said.At the moment, the average launch price of Ultrabooks released or announced in the US over the past year is $1,027 - well above the $510 average selling price of Windows-based laptops, according to analyst firm NPD in June. However, Intel promised Ultrabook prices would fall to $699 this year, with HP already getting closer to the mark with a $799 Envy systems.Devices such as HP's $579 Sleekbook - which runs AMD's chips, so can't be called an Ultrabook - may be the the ones to watch, noted IHS. "Another factor causing IHS to reduce the forecast is Intel¡¯s increasingly stringent set of definitions for Ultrabooks," IHS said added. "Based on these designations, many notebooks once called Ultrabooks now are being classified as 'ultrathins'."

Nvidia has unveiled a new technology for laptops which will automatically switch from integrated to discrete graphics depending on the task. While integrated graphics chips tend to be quite gentle on battery life, they don't have the muscle to tackle more intensive tasks such as gaming. In contrast, discrete graphics cards tend to offer more grunt at the cost of a higher power draw - putting a significant strain on battery life.In an effort to offer customers the best of both worlds laptop manufacturers have begun selling laptops offering both an integrated chip and a discrete graphics card. However, they've been required to manually switch between the two, and according to figures presented by Nvidia, less than 1% of people with the feature take advantage of it.One potential pitfall could be that Optimus depends on software profiles to tell it whether a task requires discrete graphics or the integrated chipOne potential pitfall could be that Optimus depends on software profiles to tell it whether a task requires discrete graphics or the integrated chip

In an effort to address this Nvidia's Optimus promises to automatically flip on the discrete graphics card when the user requires the extra power - running a game, for example. However, the moment they go back to writing an email, or browsing the web, Optimus will turn the card off and hand control back to the integrated chip. One potential pitfall could be that Optimus depends on software profiles to tell it whether a task requires discrete graphics or the integrated chip. For applications that aren't recognised by Optimus, users will be able to activate the correct option with a simple right click, or by creating their own profile through the Nvidia Control Panel.Nvidia is promising to constantly update the Optimus software with new profiles, meaning users shouldn't be tripped up too often.

The graphics card company says the technology will work with a range of Intel processors, including the Pine Trail platform, and will be integrated with its own GeForce 200M and 300M series, and next-generation Ion platform. The first Optimus-enabled laptops will arrives courtesy of Asus at the end of February, with models from other manufacturers debuting in the next few months.A panel of the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco reversed a federal district court's 2008 dismissal of the case against Dell. That dismissal followed the plaintiffs' refusal to comply with a district court order that their claims be arbitrated. In their lawsuit, the plaintiffs alleged that Dell violated California consumer laws by selling Inspiron notebooks that had inadequate cooling systems, power supplies and motherboards.

Dell has fought very, very hard... (but) we got the courtroom doors open, which was our primary goalDell has fought very, very hard... (but) we got the courtroom doors open, which was our primary goalThey said the defects caused their notebooks to shut down without warning, fail to boot up, or deteriorate too quickly. The notebooks were bought between July 2004 and January 2005. It is not clear how many customers were affected. In the ruling, Judge Lyle Strom said the district court abused its discretion in dismissing the case and "the public's interest in a resolution on the merits weighed strongly" in favor of letting the case continueThe judge also called it "unconscionable" to enforce a provision in customers' sales contracts requiring arbitration, in part because customers may decide not to pursue claims over the $1,200 to $1,500 computers individually."Dell has fought very, very hard," said Jonathan Selbin, a New York-based partner at Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP representing the plaintiffs. "We got the courtroom doors open, which was our primary goal."The appeals court sent the case back to the district court for further proceedings. Strom is a senior district court judge in Nebraska, who was sitting in California by designation.

With budget laptops increasingly slimming down to near-Ultrabook dimensions, Toshiba's gigantic Satellite C75 looks almost comically oversized. If you're looking to replace a desktop PC, however, this big-bodied laptop deserves serious consideration. With a respectable Core i3 CPU, a spacious keyboard and a huge 17in display, the Satellite C75 could well have what it takes to become a permanent resident on your desk.Measuring a whisker over 37mm at its thickest point, the Satellite C75 looks like it could swallow an Ultrabook whole. It's not as weighty as you might guess from its dimensions, but you're unlikely to relish carting its 2.7kg bulk out of the house too often. It could serve as a mobile workstation, however, if exceptional battery life isn't needed: away from the mains, with the display dimmed to 75cd/m2 and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off, the system ran for 5hrs 25mins in our light-use battery test.

Aesthetically, Toshiba has gone for a fairly conservative look. The 17.3in screen is protected by a rather plain-looking lid, inside which the Satellite C75 comes finished in either plain white or a two-tone clash of grey and black plastic. A dash of pin-pricked silver around the speakers is the only concession to glamour. It all feels rather plasticky, but that's not to say it's flimsy. The hollow-feeling chassis affords lots of room around key components in case of accidental drops, and while the lid has some give to it, it does a good job of protecting the display inside ¨C it wasn't until we pushed hard that the lid began to press on the TFT panel inside and cause visible ripples on the display. The full-sized keyboard and numeric keypad are welcome, too, and the light action of the keys and the spacious layout make for trouble-free typing. The touchpad feels a little cramped, however, especially considering the size of the C75 itself, and the slight lip around its edges gets in the way of Windows 8's edge-swipes. We expect most people will hook up a USB mouse.Internally, Toshiba has equipped the Satellite C75 with a 2.5GHz Core i3-3120M processor and an unusually generous pairing of 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a 1TB hard disk. That's an impressive roster of components for the price; the Toshiba would have fared well in last month's budget-laptop Labs, had it arrived in time.

Batterie d'ordinateur HP HSTNN-181C

HP HSTNN-F01C Battery

There¡¯s an active stylus included in the box, and as this is pressure-sensitive, it¡¯s possible to take full advantage of the stylus for everything from handwriting recognition to more artistic pursuits. Disappointingly, there¡¯s no way to stow the stylus inside the VAIO Duo 13¡¯s chassis, but Sony has included a small plastic clip, which slots into the right-hand flank and holds the stylus in place. Sony has also added a flip-out stand just next to it, allowing the stylus to be propped up like a pen in an inkwell. The larger chassis now affords room for a full-sized, backlit keyboard, and while the short-travel keys are a little lacking in feel compared to the best Ultrabooks, it¡¯s easy to get up to touch-typing speed. We¡¯re not sorry to see the back of the VAIO Duo 11¡¯s optical trackpoint, but although the wide, squat touchpad is a step in the right direction, it remains far from ideal ¨C it¡¯s very thin, which means repeated strokes of the pad are required for larger movements, even with the sensitivity cranked right up.The first IdeaPad Miix failed to set the pulse racing, but Lenovo¡¯s not one to give up easily. It¡¯s delivered a pair of new hybrid devices ¨C the 10.1in Miix 2 10 and 11.6in Miix 2 11 ¨C which transform from tablet to laptop with the help of a magnetic docking keyboard.

Where Lenovo¡¯s Yoga devices work their magic with a 360-degree hinge, the Miix 2 uses hidden magnets. This allows the tablet and keyboard combo to flip into three positions. The tablet snaps flush, face-down onto the keyboard for when you¡¯re on the move; slots in upright for laptop use; or turns about-face to allow the keyboard to act as a stand.
This isn¡¯t a subtle tweak to the original Miix design ¨C the Miix 2 range has been entirely transformed. Both the 10.1in and 11.6in models look sleek and sharp, finished in tough-feeling silver plastics, and they have a nice heft to them, too. Our only moan? Lenovo¡¯s use of plastic rather than aluminium means there isn¡¯t the solidity of Microsoft¡¯s Surface tablets.
Physically, though, the pair have a pretty enviable set of vital statistics. The Miix 2 10 weighs in at 590g for the 9.2mm-thick tablet, with the keyboard adding 440g. The Miix 2 11, meanwhile, comes in at an Ultrabook-rivalling total weight of 1.35kg, and the 11mm-thick tablet alone weighs 798g.The smaller of the pair ¨C the Miix 2 10 ¨C fires into life with Intel¡¯s quad-core Bay Trail platform, 2GB of RAM, up to 128GB of eMMC storage and a 32-bit installation of Windows 8.1. Its big brother - the Miix 2 11 ¨C uses low-voltage Haswell processors, with anything up to Core i7-class CPUs taking the helm, alongside mSATA SSDs with up to 256GB of storage.

Up front, the Miix 2 10 packs a 1,920 x 1,200 display while, curiously, the 11in model plumps for a 1,920 x 1,080 Full HD panel ¨C both support 10-point multitouch, however.
While many tablets and hybrids sacrifice connectivity, Lenovo has made the most of every opportunity. Whichever model you choose, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi makes the grade, as does Bluetooth 4 and optional 3G. Micro-HDMI has external displays covered; microSD is ready to give storage a boost; and while the Miix 2 10 charges via its micro-USB port, the larger model charges via its dual-purpose USB 3 port.It looks like it might be second time lucky for Lenovo¡¯s Miix. Both models are destined for release in February of this year, and although UK pricing hasn¡¯t yet been decided, we¡¯ve got high hopes for the pair. With the 32GB Miix 2 10 slated to launch at $449 and the Core i3, 64GB Miix 2 11 coming in at $599, these two could make a big impact.Network video cameras are prevalent in the world of businesses, but for home owners they remain a rarity. The problem? Setup can be fiddly, and although many IP cameras are wireless, they still require mains power. Netgear¡¯s VueZone system aims to rectify this situation.

By using the low-powered ZigBee wireless standard, its cameras are able to operate using only a pair of CR123 batteries, so there¡¯s no need to drill holes in walls or run cables to install them. In conjunction with the system¡¯s magnetic half-dome camera mounts, which adhere to the wall with sticky pads, it¡¯s possible to get the system up and running in a matter of minutes. Before sticking the cameras to the wall, all you need to do is hook up the ZigBee bridge unit to a spare port on your router, pair the cameras with it and set up an account on the VueZone website. At this point, you¡¯ll be able to view a live feed from the cameras from either a laptop, tablet or smartphone (apps for both iOS and Android devices are available) and change settings. And because VueZone is designed to be a remote monitoring system, you can view your feeds from anywhere you like, inside or outside your local network, with no fiddly setup or port forwarding required. The VueZone home monitoring kit we tested costs ¡ê247, which sounds pricey, but there¡¯s plenty in the box. For your money you get two cameras ¨C one day and one night camera ¨C plus the bridge and a mains-powered LED lamp, which is powerful enough to illuminate a medium-sized room for night-time monitoring. Each camera has a motion sensor, which allows you to automatically record stills and video based on motion in the frame.

What isn¡¯t such good news is that to make the most out of the system, you have to pay a subscription. The basic service is free, but this will only allow you to view the cameras live, and record and still snapshots. To have the system record video clips, or add more cameras to the system, you need to pay ¡ê4 per month (or ¡ê35 per year) for a Premier account. That¡¯s pretty restrictive, but what makes it worse is there¡¯s no option bypass this and record the cameras¡¯ output to a local NAS drive, and the VueZone portal is slow and clunky. With no option to drill down even by specific date, browsing through hundreds, and possibly thousands of clips becomes a horrendously slow job.The biggest problem, though, is with image quality. Because the VueZone cameras are battery powered and can¡¯t be asked to carry out processor intensive tasks, both resolution and frame rate are limited. The cameras are able to record at a maximum of 640 x 480 at 3fps, or 320 x 240 at a mere 6fps. The resulting snapshots and clips are, as you might expect, severely lacking in detail, and don¡¯t convey enough information to identify faces in clips. There¡¯s also no audio.

Ultimately, the VueZone system simply doesn¡¯t do enough to justify the price. It¡¯s the simplest home camera system we¡¯ve come across to set up and deploy, and it appears to be good value at first glance. However, the free subscription service level locks you out of too many features, the image quality is poor and the management portal is far too basic and clunky.Acer has today unveiled the latest additions to its laptop line-up at a launch event in London. The company revealed the successor to its Aspire Timeline range of laptops - the Aspire Timeline X series - its new roster of mid-range entertainment notebooks, and its luxurious new Aspire Ethos models. The Timeline X range continues to focus on ultraportability, and includes 13.3in, 14in and 15.6in models which Acer claim weigh in at 1.8kg, 2.2kg and 2.4kg respectively. The 11.6in models announced in the US won't be coming to our shores until later in the year.Read Sasha Muller's first impressions of the Acer Timeline X Series here
The redesigned chassis' measure as little as 25.4mm thick, and portability goes hand-in-hand with the promise of all-day computing. Acer claims that the Timeline X models will run for a minimum of eight hours, and as long as 12 hours with its proprietary PowerSmart software. Prices are expected to start at around ¡ê600 inc VAT.

The consumer-focussed lines have also received a welcome update, with a raft of Aspire models redesigned from the ground up. The additions consist of both 15.6in and 17.3in models replete with 16:9 ratio displays. Intel's latest Core processors take centre stage alongside ATI's 5000 series of DirectX 11 compatible graphics chipsets.Acer is also bolstering its high-end credentials with the arrival of the Aspire Ethos: a huge, metal-clad 18.4in desktop replacement. With a focus firmly upon entertainment, the Ethos partners a 1080p screen with a Blu-ray drive and an integrated set of 5.1 speakers. Prices are expected to begin at ¡ê1,099 inc VAT.The 3D craze has broken free of its early-adopter shackles, thanks in no small part to the huge success of Avatar, and manufacturers are stepping up their assault on the tech-savvy public. This model of the Asus G51J is the first 3D Vision laptop, and comes complete with the necessary glasses and transceiver in the box. It¡¯s not the first 3D laptop we¡¯ve seen ¨C last year's Acer Aspire 5738DZG 3D used a polarised panel and passive glasses ¨C but it¡¯s the first to use Nvidia¡¯s superior active-shutter technology. The quick-start guide will be a help for most people, but it isn¡¯t difficult to set up: a wizard within the Nvidia drivers holds your hand through the process, and a demo animation allows you to dial the stereoscopic effect to a comfortable level before diving into any games.

The good news is that the 3D effect works exceptionally well, and we¡¯re beginning to see game developers make proper use of it in the latest titles. Even going back to an older title such as Far Cry 2 sees the niggles from our early tests last year all but ironed out after a host of driver revisions. If major titles keep building it in from the start, we can really see it being attractive to hardcore gamers. The 15.6in screen size isn¡¯t the hindrance we¡¯d imagined provided you sit close to it, and the frame of the chassis creates the appearance of a window into a deep game world. The speakers are loud and full by laptop standards, which adds to the immersion, and this well-planned bundle includes a comfortable but cheap Razer Salmosa mouse to aid your gaming performance. If this all sounds like a glowing recommendation, there are still major issues that need to be overcome. The glasses are about as clunky and unappealing as you¡¯d believe possible, although that¡¯s for Nvidia to rectify. A bigger problem is that of brightness: as the shutter glasses darken things significantly the screen needs a strong backlight to compensate, and the Asus can¡¯t match a decent 3D monitor in this respect. It meant we often missed things in the heat of battle, particularly when foes hid in the shadows.

The other main stumbling block is the graphics card. This works by producing two full-resolution images and alternating them, which puts added pressure on the GPU. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M coped as well as it could ¨C and the fairly low 1,366 x 768 resolution makes a lot of sense to limit the strain ¨C but it still whined audibly and roasted the desk like a hairdryer during games.China's quality control watchdog claims HP sold faulty laptops and ignored consumer protection regulations. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement that after consumer complaints, it had found several models were affected by defective video cards and displays. The faulty video cards caused overheating, crashes and blank screens on some HP Pavilion DV2000 and Compaq Presario v3000 laptops. Six models including the HP 541 also had problems with their screens, the findings added. The statement did not say how many computers were affected overall. It's not clear whether the problems are related to the faulty Nvidia GPUs that affected several laptop manufacturers in 2008, including HP and Dell, which had similar problems with overheating.

Accu MAKITA BTP130Z

Meer over de heatpipe technologie is hier te vinden:Coolermaster HHC-001 heatpipe The clipping mechanism for the Heat Pipe is completely awesome. Don't even think about reaching for that screwdriver with this baby, because you won't need it. Coolermaster has employed an oversized tension clip that requires no tools at all. I was simply amazed. The tension clip is oversized so it allows you to mount the Heat Pipe one handed if you wanted to…and blindfolded. Yes, it was that easy Wow! Coolermaster's HHC-001 comes in 3rd in our list of coolers! That's pretty amazing, and I really didn't expect it from such a small cooler. It beat Vantec's 6035D and Global WIN's CAKII 38! Both of these units also use the 60mm Delta as well. Good job Coolermaster. It seems the heat pipes on the HHC-001 really do work wonders.

Einzig The Witcher 2 bereitete Schwierigkeiten.

Een test-versie wordt echter al eind januari verwacht:Linus TorvaldsThis should not be a big surprise to anybody on the list any more, since we've been building up to it for a long time now, and for the last few weeks I haven't accepted any patches except for what amounts to fairly obvious one-liners.[...] To give you an example, one of the nastier bugs that we chased for the last five weeks was a bug that could only be reproduced reliably on a 16- or 32-way system, and only when the system had flaky disks. Putting in known-good disks made the problem disappear. Similarly, compiling the kernel with another compiler made the problem disappear.

It turned out to be a really subtle bug wrt SMP ordering and stack allocation, and lots of thanks to Ram Pai for gathering all the information that eventually led to it being fixed. The fix was a one-liner and a big comment - but my point is that the quality of bugs has been pretty high lately, and we feel that we're in pretty good shape.

MacOS X Apple said in a statement today that the company has an estimated 3 million Mac OS X users and expects to reach 5 million Mac OS X users -- or more than 20 percent of the installed base -- by the end of this calendar year. We're happy to see Apple take this next step to drive adoption of Mac OS X, said Kevin Browne, general manager of the Macintosh Business Unit at Microsoft Corp. Mac OS X has really come of age with the release of 'Jaguar,' and we think the combination of OS X v10.2 and Office v. X for Mac provides our customers with the power and compatibility they're seeking.
