Akku ASUS G53SX

Käufer müssen den Herstellern also vertrauen.

Trotz Schutzklasse sollte man seinem Smartphone also nicht allzu viel zumuten.

Toshiba PA3475U-1BRS laptop battery

Just in time for Microsoft's Windows 8.1 operating system update, the company's flagship Surface tablet line is also getting a makeover. Or in the case of the $899 Surface Pro 2, it's more of a makeunder -- there's no flashy physical redesign, as with the thinner, lighter, higher-res Surface 2 (the updated Windows RT version that starts at $449).Of course, you're probably here because the Surface 2, despite its myriad improvements, isn't a real PC. Unlike that model's compromised Windows RT operating system, the Surface Pro 2 reviewed here runs the real-deal Windows 8.1, which includes full backwards compatibility with older Windows programs, not just the ones available in the Windows Store. In addition to having the operating system edge on its non-Pro sibling, the Surface Pro 2 also packs some internal improvements compared to the first-generation Surface Pro. A new Intel fourth-generation Core i5 processor -- along with some internal system tweaking by Microsoft -- has delivered notably improved battery life. The Pro 2 lasted nearly 7 hours in our admittedly tough battery test, versus just 4.5 on the original. Still not MacBook Air territory, but it's a worthwhile leap. Sweetening the deal is the Surface's ingenious detachable keyboard cover (available in flat Touch and real-key Type versions, both now with a handy backlight), which remains miles ahead of anything else available for slate computing.

But a keyboard cover isn't included in the purchase price, even though it's frankly crazy to buy a Surface without one. That $120-$130 add-on makes the Surface Pro 2's $899 starting price feel illusory. Further, that $899 is only for a 64GB solid-state drive (SSD) version, less storage than you'll find in most similarly priced ultrabooks. For a more reasonable 128GB SSD version, it's $999, and when you add in a Type Cover, you're looking at an investment of over $1,100 just to get started with the Surface Pro 2.The Surface Pro 2 is also entering a crowded market of Windows 8.1 PCs in all shapes and sizes that are either out now or coming soon. Among the closest competitor is Sony's comparably priced Sony Vaio Tap 11, which outshines the Surface Pro 2 in many ways -- it's thinner and lighter, despite having a slightly larger screen, and its included keyboard cover has a more traditional keyboard layout and a larger touch pad (that said, I like the magnetic clasp and wide kickstand of the Surface Pro 2 better).

In comparison, the still-chunky Surface Pro 2 is left feeling more like a Surface Pro 1.5, at least in terms of design. And yet, that may not be such a bad thing for Microsoft. The Surface Pro was intended from the beginning to show the way for PC makers to design and build better tablets, and it looks like that's actually starting to happen. The body of the Surface Pro 2 looks and feels almost exactly like the original version, and its measurements are the same. The body does have a couple of subtle changes, however. The logo branding on the back panel is different, reading Surface rather than Microsoft, and the built-in kickstand now adjusts to two different angles, making the screen easier to see from different positions. The original one-size-fits-all kickstand made the screen hard to see and interact with unless you happened to be sitting at precisely the optimal angle.

At the same time as the Surface Pro 2, Microsoft is introducing another new product, the Surface 2. This is the updated Windows RT version of the original Microsoft Surface, and it features a slightly slimmer body, an updated Nvidia processor, and a higher-resolution screen than the original RT version of the Surface. The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 share the same screen now, and it's been color-tuned for greater accuracy. While the Surface Pro 2 still comes in a slatelike dark titanium color, the Windows RT Surface 2 is now a lighter, silver color called magnesium. Overall, while I think the Surface Pro 2 is the more useful product, I wish it had gotten the same design love as the RT version.
The best part of the original Surface line was its optional snap-on keyboards, and both have been updated. The Touch Cover has flat keys that work, but they offer less tactile feedback than serious typists need, while the Type Cover has island-style keys that are shallow, but still very usable. The $119.99 Touch Cover 2 is about one-third thinner than the original version, but at the same time, more rigid for easier typing. The old system of one sensor under each key has been replaced with a full array of sensors, allowing partial keystrokes to be counted more easily and accurately, and supporting a handful of gestures.

The $129.99 Type Cover 2, with its full separate-key keyboard, is thinner as well, and remains one of the things people like best about the Surface. Its magnetic connection is powerful enough that you don't have to worry about it coming loose, and, while the closely packed keys take a little getting used to, it's comfortable and accurate for long-form typing. The touch pad is small, but responsive -- and you're clearly meant to use the touch screen for much of your navigation.Microsoft has also shown off a second kind of Type Cover that includes an integrated battery. Only slightly thicker than the standard Type Cover, this would allow the systems to run even longer by combining the internal battery and the secondary keyboard battery, an idea already used in a handful of Windows 8 laptop-tablet hybrids. A $59 Bluetooth adapter for the keyboard covers (yes, it's an accessory for an accessory) will snap onto the top of the keyboard and allow you to use it remotely as a Bluetooth keyboard. In the not-sold-separately department, as with the original Surface Pro, you also get an active-stylus Surface Pen that magnetically attaches to the power connector for transport.

Again, both the Touch Cover 2 and Type Cover 2 are backlit. Especially for a system intended for frequent travel, as a tablet is presumed to be, a backlit keyboard is practically required, as you can easily end up in a dimly lit coffee shop, airplane, or meeting room. The only real regret here is that the keyboard covers are not included with the $899-and-up Surface Pro 2, and remain an expensive add-on.A long time ago, laptops used to very occasionally convert into tablets but we never made a big deal out of it. They had rotating screens and touch, and were business-oriented. The problem back then was that these laptops weren't particularly useful most of the time unless you had specific applications in mind. One year into Windows 8, tablet-laptop hybrids are a dime a dozen. But the HP EliteBook Revolve 810 feels like a new spin on that old swivel-top design. It has plenty of company already, several examples of which are from Lenovo: the IdeaPad Yoga 11S, the ThinkPad Helix, and the ThinkPad Twist, the Twist being a very similar product to the Revolve in many ways with its own swivel-screen design.

Also, there's the problem of price: the EliteBook Revolve starts at $1,249 and our review configuration with 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) and Core i5 CPU costs a princely $1,449. When Apple's latest products undercut yours, you have a problem. And that ThinkPad Twist we mentioned just before starts at $849 ($899 as reviewed). The Revolve's higher price, albeit with an SSD, is hard to swallow, even with its Gorilla Glass 2-covered touch screen and vPro processor. Finally, there's the battery life: a disappointing sub-5-hour score on our tests means it's operating out of touch with the current PC landscape.
I liked the Revolve a lot at CES in January, but it's July now. An updated Haswell processor (with better battery life) and a lower starting price seem necessary, at minimum, to shoot the Revolve back into position as something I'd recommend. Right now, it's a good, sturdy little laptop that's just too little, too late; if it happens to make its way into your office's selection of business laptop upgrades, however, you won't be disappointed with how nice it feels. You'll just wish it had better battery life.

I remember the HP Folio 13 fondly: it was a compact business ultrabook that felt rock-solid and surprisingly comfortable. The EliteBook Revolve isn't the Folio reborn, but it has a bit of that feel in a smaller 11.6-inch laptop. It also happens to transform into a multitouch tablet, unlike other hybrids that are more like tablets that add separate keyboards to pretend to be laptops. The HP ElitePad 900 is an example of an Atom-powered tablet with laptoplike extras; the EliteBook Revolve 810, on the other hand, is a more expensive, ultrabook-level performance device on par with the Surface Pro and a host of other laptops like the Yoga 11S and the ThinkPad Twist and Helix. The Revolve is clearly a laptop that can pretend to be a tablet. It's nice-feeling all around. Nice being the operative word. Not mind-blowing, not supersexy. It still looks like IT department-issued equipment, but sports a clean-cut industrial profile.
A soft-touch business-rugged magnesium alloy frame is designed to take a mild licking, and indeed, the Revolve has been tested by HP for vibration, drop, dust, and temperature extremes, but it's not intended to be a true super-rugged machine. We didn't specifically test durability, but it's more solid-feeling than most laptops.

The Revolve, true to its name, has a screen with a center hinge that spins around, enabling the screen to flip over as the laptop is folded up so the whole package becomes a tablet. This is an old-fashioned idea: many pre-Windows 8 tablet laptops employed the same concept. It's a little more complex than the easy-fold hinge on the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, but it does make for very easy screen adjustment when planted on a table, for situations where you'd spin the display around to show a client or you want to watch movies without having the keyboard in the way. The hinge usually maintains position and opens smoothly, but it didn't always hold still when the base was shuffled around quickly. Swiveling the screen around into tablet mode is equally satisfying when it's used as a handheld device or as a kiosklike touch-screen-on-a-laptop-base.

Because the Revolve is a smaller laptop, the palm rest and touch-pad zones are sized down a little. But the backlit keyboard has been largely uncompromised, with solid, square keys going edge to edge without any needless cramping or extra keys. Key travel is deeper and better than on many ultrabooks. The spill-resistant keyboard has drains on the bottom tray for funneling away liquid, too. Below that, the clickable touch pad is similarly comfy to use.
The Revolve has an easily grippable design and lightish weight. At 3.02 pounds, it's lighter than the ThinkPad Helix 11 and ThinkPad Twist, but heavier than the 11-inch MacBook Air and Microsoft Surface Pro. It's nearly the exact same weight as the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S, but at 0.8 inch thick, it's chunkier than you'd expect. The top lid closes evenly with the front of the Revolve, but sits about a half-inch forward of the back edge, creating a little lip. It's reminiscent of the older Dell Inspiron laptop designs. The underbite is not very attractive.

Accu ASUS UX21E Ultrabook

NOT FOUND of ACCESS DENIED bevatten. In Detail staat verder gedetailleerdere informatie.

Zo check je of deze gestolen is.Een handig programma is bijvoorbeeld A.L.A.R.M.

TOSHIBA Satellite C600 Battery

The result? The XO-1 ran for just 45 seconds short of four hours. Not so great.Well, it's a prototype, and OLPC vice-president Jim Gettys said that heavy use could be construed to cover uses as lightweight as reading an ebook outdoors with the backlight off. So I charged the machine overnight and, this morning, from a clean reboot, I started an ebook-reading test with the backlight off. I opened a PDF provided with the XO-1 and pushed the page-down button once every 20 minutes to keep the display from turning off entirely. The machine ran for 4 hours and 59 minutes. (I swear these are the actual numbers.) That's a long way from Bender's promise of 10 to 12 hours... with heavy use.
But still, it's a prototype, and as Gettys explained, there are many opportunities for further power reductions. Similarly, there will undoubtedly be other improvements over time. We'll see.

Positioned between the business-targeted Latitude and the mainstream consumer Inspiron lines, Dell's Vostro has always been the type of computer that's half-meant for personal use, half for business: it's casual professional. The Vostro 3300, part of a revamped line from Dell, is a 13-inch laptop with a somewhat thick frame and a standard-voltage Core i3, i5, or i7 processor. It's not as slick as the more expensive Vostro V13, which takes much of its design ideas from the high-end Dell Adamo (the original model, not the newer XPS version), but it still has a bit of the Adamo magic in its looks and metal outer casing. More importantly, the 3300's price--starting at $599 for a Core i3 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive--makes it very affordable.

The Vostro 3300 isn't going to turn heads, but it is one of the best, most affordable and lightweight small business 13-inchers we've seen, with its only significant drawback being battery life. It's so nice that we wonder why Dell hasn't offered this little guy up to mainstream consumers more eagerly. The Vostro is meant to glide somewhere between personal and business, and that's exactly what the design of the 3300 suggests: metal and black define the outside, with squared-off edges on the front and back, and slightly rounded sides. The Vostro 3300 comes standard in Aberdeen Silver (which is what we had) in Core i3 configurations, with the option of adding Lucerne Red or Brisbane Bronze color schemes in the Core i5 configuration for an extra $40. Overall, the design lies somewhere between the trendy Adamo and the more utilitarian Latitude.

Plain, ThinkPad-esque matte-black defines the interior of this minimalist Dell, from the keyboard deck up to the material surrounding the above-screen Webcam. A few backlit media-control keys and a backlit power button above the keyboard are the only flashy touches. Because this Vostro has a slightly thick and squared bottom half, there's room to fit audio in/out jacks, an SD card slot, and a Wi-Fi toggle button on the front edge, although they're a little tightly packed together in the center below the track pad.The keyboard on the Dell Vostro 3300 is similar to ones we've seen on other recent Dell laptops: it could be best described as a flat keyboard with individually raised keys. Though there's no number pad, it's easy to type and feels comfortable during extended writing sessions, and the keyboard goes edge-to-edge, maximizing the laptop's compact dimensions. The keyboard on our model wasn't backlit and that isn't available as an upgrade option on this exact model, but there is a Dell Vostro 3300 that includes a backlit keyboard on Dell's Web site starting at $708.

Above the keyboard, a small backlit touch-controlled media bar has basic play/pause and volume functions. It's useful, but not overly so for a business-focused machine. These might have been better spent on videoconferencing and other productivity-related toggles. To the right of these are a few LED indicators for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and battery status. The track pad is wider and responds better than that of some brands we've seen. The plain discrete buttons below are nothing remarkable and could be slightly larger, but at least they're not overdesigned.
A 13.3-inch LED-backlit display on the Dell Vostro 3300 has a 16x9 aspect ratio and a native resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, which is standard for most laptops up to 15 inches. These screens also come standard with antiglare, which is far rarer. The experience we had was excellent--the screen has the glare-free quality of a matte display, with the crispness found in a glossy coating. Text and video were easy to watch in any lighting.

The included 2-megapixel Webcam had better clarity, sound-recording and light sensitivity than most Webcams we've come across, making it perfect for video conferencing. A small LED light also indicates the camera's in record mode. Though the camera's professional, Dell's selection of cartoonish effect overlays in its included camera software can only be described as cheese-ball.There's only one speaker on the Vostro 3300. It's located on the front left edge of the laptop's bottom half, and though it sounds loud and clear, its off-center position makes it a weak choice for movie playback. Should you choose to take a break with a DVD, you might want to pack some good headphones. The Dell Vostro 3300 doesn't have a huge selection of ports, but it does have eSATA. It's lacking HDMI-out, however, which is a feature that's becoming nearly universal on all laptops (excluding Macs). Thankfully, at least there's Bluetooth.

Configuration options abound on the Vostro 3300, as is often the case with Dell laptops. Customization on Dell's Web site offers either a Core i3 or i5 processor, along with RAM configurations from 2GB to 4GB and hard drives from 250GB to 500, all at 7,200rpm. RAM can be expanded up to 8GB. Despite Core i3 and i5 processors being 64-bit-ready, Dell chose to make 32-bit Windows Home Premium the default OS. Upgrading to 32-bit Professional or 64-bit Home Premium costs an extra $70; 64-bit Professional, an extra $120.Depending on the support software, memory and other options chosen, the Vostro 3300's price can climb above $1,000, where it no longer seems like a great bargain. We'd advise you keep software services to a minimum and focus on basic needs. Our configuration, at over $800, just straddles the border of what we'd consider paying before looking elsewhere. The X420 scores early points for style, at least on the outside. A sparkling silver lid and chrome edging give the X420 an attractive finish. Opening it up sadly reveals a more businesslike matte-black finish, although curved edges help make the interior a little more visually arresting.

That hot look unfortunately doesn't translate into solid build quality. Both the X420's lid and chassis twisted in our hands, and we noticed a high degree of keyboard flex when we applied a little pressure. The X420 certainly doesn't feel robust, which is quite an obstacle when you bear in mind it's designed to be your faithful companion on the road, and needs to be able to withstand a few knocks. It might not look as if it'll withstand much abuse, but the X420 really is small and light. At 1.78kg it's positively feathery for a 14-inch laptop, despite the six-cell battery lurking round the back. Sling the X420 in a bag and you'll barely notice it, even if you're carrying it around all day.The keyboard is well designed but doesn't feel terribly durable. The trackpad is smooth and sensitiveThe optical drive has been sacrificed to keep the laptop as light as possible. The X420 comes with an external DVD-RW drive which plugs in via USB, which is useful as you get to choose whether or not you really need it, but it has to be said it's not a particularly elegant solution.

The X420 sports a 14-inch LED 1,366x768-pixel resolution display, which was certainly easy on the eyes. The horizontal viewing angle is reasonably good, and means you don't have to be looking at the screen dead-on to see what's happening. While the display is sharp and bright, it does tend to look slightly drained of colour. When viewing an array of test photos and video footage it looked a little washed-out, and not as vibrant as we'd have liked.Buried deep within the X420's nether regions is an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU clocked at 1.3GHz, and backed up by 3GB of RAM. Those are middle of the road specs, which our benchmark tests reflected. The X420 achieved a score of 3,186 in PCMark05, and 853 when we ran 3DMark06 -- respectable but not particularly exciting scores.

Now that surfing the Net while flying is no longer new, I really want a computer that can last the entire flight from San Francisco to NYC, which is about 6 hours long.Acer seems to have a solution for that. On Tuesday, the company announced its newest Aspire Timeline series, which it claims offers more than 8 hours of battery life on average in one charge. If this is true, it'll really set a new standard for mobility and productivity.According to Acer, the Aspire Timeline series achieved this extended battery life thanks to a combination of factors, including a unique design, Intel's ultralow-voltage processors, advanced power management, high-capacity batteries, and LED backlit displays. The result is a series of laptops that are thinner, lighter, and much more energy-efficient than other laptops.

The best thing about the new Aspire Timeline series, however, is the price. Ranging from $598 to $899, the Timelines are among the most affordable laptops. However, there's a catch and it's rather big: the three laptops in this series use very low-performance CPUs. Running at a paltry 1.4Ghz or 1.3Ghz, the 15.6-inch Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4657 uses an Intel Pentium, the 14-inch Aspire Timeline AS4810T-8480 uses the Intel Core Solo, and the 13.3-inch Aspire Timeline AS3810T-6415 uses the Intel Core 2 Duo. To put this in perspective: most Netbooks use Atom CPUs running at 1.6Ghz.In addition, they all run Windows Vista, and from my experience with similar configurations, this means the performance will suffer terribly. It would be somewhat better if they were configured with Windows XP or Linux, but that's not an option.

So, while this series is exciting news, on second thought, I think I'll still stick with my Dell XPS M1330 for now. It has around only 3 hours of battery life, but they are 3 hours of serious computing.Basic Netbooks are a fairly simple formula to pull off. Combine an Intel Atom 450 processor, 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter, and a 250GB hard drive, and you've got any of an army of products from Asus, Acer, HP, and others. MSI was another early combatant in the Netbook wars, and its Wind models have typically followed the usual trends in components and pricing, making them perfectly acceptable alternatives. The current version of the MSI Wind, called the U160, happens to stand out from the crowd in a couple of ways. It boasts some of the longest battery life we've seen, at 7-plus hours, and it ran some of our benchmark tests just a few seconds faster than other Netbooks. It's not enough of a performance difference to notice in real-world use, but if you're looking for the maximum possible battery life, the Wind is certainly up there.

Batterie d'ordinateur Acer Aspire 5735Z

Laptop Battery Dell precision m6300

The keyboard is exceedingly comfortable, with wide, flat keys that feel solid and sound nearly silent when pounding out e-mails or laptop reviews. Unlike many 15.6-inch laptops, including the Asus K501J and the Dell iM501R, the HP G62 does not feature a dedicated number pad. Though some users may bemoan its absence, we think the majority of budget buyers won't miss it, because without a number pad the keyboard is perfectly centered below the screen and no keys are shortened. There is room for a column of shortcut keys along the left side of the keyboard, which offer one-button access to Windows Live Mail, CyberLink PowerDVD 9, your default browser, a print window, and a calculator. It will take some getting used to, however, before you're not hitting the print key instead of Shift, the calculator key instead of the Alt key, or caps lock instead of the "a" key. The laptop does not have a row of multimedia shortcut keys above the keyboard. Instead HP smartly reverse-maps the Function keys so that you don't need to hit the Fn key in order to access their secondary functions, such as adjust volume or screen brightness, or play, stop, fast forward, and rewind a track.

We are happy to see that HP finally retired the chrome-finish touch pad it had been using for the past few generations of mainstream laptop models (its glossy surface always created drag against your mousing finger). In its place is a touch pad with a matte finish, resulting in an improved mousing experience. In fact, the textured design of the keyboard deck runs uninterrupted across the touch pad. We're not normally fans of borderless touch pads, but the touch pad here is big enough that your finger doesn't wander off. We were disappointed, however, to discover that the touch pad does not support multitouch gestures. It's an increasingly common feature and is found on both the Asus K501J and the Dell iM501R.
In the upper-left corner of the touch pad is a small LED, which offers an easy way to disable the touch pad. Double tap the corner and the LED glows orange, alerting you that the touch pad is disabled. Double tap again and the LED turns off, indicating the touch pad is back in action.

Below the touch pad is a single, rocker-bar mouse button. We prefer two separate mouse buttons, particularly when the single button is as stiff and hard to press and keep depressed as the HP G62's. Keeping the button engaged while you drag and drop a file is especially challenging. In the course of writing this review, we gave up and got an external mouse because of the effort required to engage the mouse button. Considering this is the part of the notebook that users interact directly with the most, it's hard to fathom why HP didn't put more thought and effort into designing a better mouse button. The 15.6-inch display features a 1,366x768-pixel resolution and is LED backlit. Movies look better than they sound. Images are crisp and vivid, but the laptop's audio leaves something to be desired. The Altec Lansing speakers sit above the keyboard, behind a thin speaker grill that runs the width of the keyboard. We were not impressed with their tinny, weak output (and we never hold high expectations for a pair of integrated laptop speakers to begin with).

A low-grade 0.3-megapixel Webcam sits above the display and uses Cyberlink's YouCam software for acceptable, but not fantastic, images.Connectivity and expansion on the HP G62-225DX is decidedly average. You get three USB 2.0 ports and a media card reader, but no ExpressCard slot. HDMI is onboard, but eSATA is not. Networking comes by way of 802.11n Wi-Fi and 100/100 Ethernet. The HP G62-225DX features the Intel Pentium T4500 processor, a dual-core chip clocked at 2.3GHz, making it an entry-level dual-core processor that is a rung below Intel's venerable Core 2 Duo line and a couple rungs below the current Core i3 and i5 series.Budget buyers will find that it delivers enough muscle for general use, including everyday multitasking scenarios. It was 10 percent slower than the Pentium T4500-based Asus K501J-BBZ5 on CNET Labs' multitasking benchmark, thanks in large part to it offering 3GB of memory to the Asus's 4GB. The HP G62 does feature faster memory, 800MHz to 667MHz. On the more processor-intensive Photoshop and iTunes tests, it turned in a better showing, actually edging the Asus K501J-BBZ5 on iTunes by a slim 3 percent. The Toshiba Satellite A665-S6050, which uses a higher-end Core i3 processor, tops the charts but costs $150 more at $679.

Back in June, we reviewed one of the more stylish HP midrange laptops we've seen to date, the HP Pavilion dm4. The Core i5-equipped 14-inch thin-and-light notebook included upscale design touches and a large touch pad in a sharp-looking metal-and-plastic chassis. Our one complaint with the dm4 was always its price: our reviewed configuration came to $979, which added up to less value than competitors. The retail configuration we found in our back-to-school roundup actually has slightly better specs for only $799. Though you can still get more for the same price from other manufacturers, this laptop now feels like a very good value. And, thankfully, it's still every bit as slim and stylish as ever. For those looking for good battery life and powerful Core i5 performance in a thin body, look no further. As a close cousin of the 13-inch HP Pavilion dm3, the new dm4 shares a similar metallic body. Rather than the brushed-metal look of the dm3, however, the dm4 features etched lines arcing and cutting their way across the palm-rest and lid, adding a smooth, curving texture to the design. The metal surfaces on both the area surrounding the keyboard and the back lid feel great to the touch, but other parts of this laptop feature plastic construction--notably the upper lid, keyboard, parts of the hinges, and the bottom. It feels mostly high-end, although the screen is covered in inset plastic instead of edge-to-edge glass.

The gently rounded corners give the dm4 a soft, consumer-friendly look. The corners of the keyboard tray (and the four keys that sit closest to the corners) are similarly rounded, as is the oversized touch pad.The keyboard is similar to the flat-topped, widely spaced keys we've seen on recent HP systems. Lacking any kind of dedicated media control buttons, all your media and alternate key functions are mapped to the row of Fn keys, although the assignments are reversed; using the traditional F4, F5, etc. functions requires holding down the Fn button. This amounts to quicker volume adjustment and media key access, and is an idea we wish more laptops appropriated.Though the keyboard is nicely laid-out, we found that we made more errors typing on it than on the much more comfortable-feeling Sony Vaio EA24FM, another retail laptop in our roundup. The keys aren't as tall, and sometimes feel a bit sticky when pressed from an angle.

The touch pad is similar to what we've seen on HP's high-end Envy systems. It's larger than most, and the matte-black surface is infinitely superior to the sticky mirrored pads we've seen on the past several generations of Pavilions. The touch pad, like Apple's, eschews separate left and right mouse buttons, instead cordoning off two click zones in the lower-left and -right corners. Still, while it's an overall improvement, some of the multitouch gestures are still hard to use. Scrolling up and down pages using the two-finger method is hit or miss, as is pinch-to-zoom. We found similar problems with the HP Envy 13.
This retail Pavilion dm4-1065dx also includes a fingerprint reader situated to the right of the touch pad. Fingerprint readers are hardly typical in retail machines. They're also not necessary, but the fingerprint-reading security feature was actually quick and accurate to use when logging in, and a smoother process than entering a typed password. The reader's software can accommodate different signatures for all 10 fingers, and even launch different apps by finger. We found this worked well enough to be useful in lieu of keyboard shortcuts.

The HP Pavilion dm4-1065dx not only has a "quick-start OS" that ostensibly loads more quickly than Windows 7 and offers a small suite of apps, like a Web browser, e-mail, and Skype, but this dm4 actually natively boots up in HP's own quick-start OS first instead of Windows 7. Anyone who isn't used to it may find this completely disconcerting. Clicking a corner button launches Windows 7 proper. The HP dm4-1065dx can be configured to boot in Windows 7 every time and skip this stage altogether, but we found it an odd graft. The 14-inch wide-screen display offers a 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size. Though overly glossy, the display was clear and bright, with realistic color reproduction. It's one of the strongest features on the HP Pavilion dm4-1065dx. The built-in speakers have decent volume for movie and video playback, but don't offer great definition. That's not a surprise, considering the small size of the HP dm4. Above the screen, a built-in 640x480-pixel Webcam offers better-than-average light sensitivity and contrast for video conferencing, but picture quality is still only suitable for small images.

The bad news on the dm4-1065dx is that it lacks Bluetooth and Blu-ray, two features that users are increasingly expecting, even in this price range. The good news is that the port selection includes HDMI and eSATA. Even better, the 500GB hard drive that comes in this particular dm4 is 7,200rpm, a zippier variation than the 5,400rpm most laptops generally include. Four GB of included DDR3 RAM can be expanded after purchase up to 8GB.The Intel Core i5 processor inside the HP Pavilion dm4-1065dx offers a really snappy experience when Web-browsing or working on general apps and multitasking. For most users, this laptop will offer great functional speeds. Though we also appreciate the more budget-minded Core i3 CPU series, we could really feel the faster speeds when loading videos and complex Web pages. There aren't any dedicated graphics on the dm4-1065dx, which means no mainstream gaming except for casual games and streaming game services such as OnLive, which are very adequate alternatives. Truthfully, most users won't miss the graphics when performing everyday tasks. This laptop will provide more than enough for straight-up computing needs, at speeds that are better than average.

Samsung has announced a brand-new line of netbooks, all of which are powered by Intel's latest Atom processor -- the 1.66GHz N450 -- which offers even lower power consumption to push the boundaries of netbook battery life further into double-figure hours. There are four new models in total: the Samsung N210, N220, N150 and NB30. We are promised 12 hours of battery life from the N210 and N220, 11 for the NB30 and 8.5 for the N150. All have 10.1-inch LED-backlit displays.Although Samsung has officially announced all four models, we're still waiting to hear more about the specifics on what's inside. Leaked specs for the N220, however, include 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard disk, 802.11n wireless and the sod-all-features Windows 7 Starter Edition OS.Don't expect radically new specifications for the other models, though -- they're netbooks after all. The selling point here is battery life, and the power-efficient integrated graphics which are now built directly into the Atom chip itself.

Accu BOSCH 53514

HP TouchSmart tm2-2100 Battery

One thing we're not so keen on is the keyboard. It flexes considerably and has a spongy feel. Pressing the 'C' key, for example, causes the '4', three rows up, to move. This, unsurprisingly, decreases typing accuracy and is also a sign of poor build quality. We're not saying keys might be falling off after a matter of months, but, if they did, we wouldn't be that surprised. The mouse could be better, too. It lacks multitouch gesture inputs and dedicated scroll zones, which we're not too happy about. The X340's most interesting feature is its brand new Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500. This runs at a rather modest 1.4GHz, which isn't even as high a frequency as an Intel Atom N270 CPU. But it has significantly more L2 cache memory than an N270 -- 3MB as opposed to 512KB -- and a faster front-side bus -- 800MHz versus 533MHz. What's more, it doesn't use significantly more energy than an Atom. The SU3500 has a thermal design power (TDP) of 5.5W, which isn't much more than the 2.5W used by an N270.Memory comes in the form of 2GB of DDR2 533MHz RAM -- more than you get in your average netbook -- plus a 250GB hard drive. Both forms of memory are ample here. The Air has far faster DDR3 1,066MHz memory, but the X340 has more than twice as much storage -- perfect if you're the sort of person that likes to stash a wealth of multimedia content.

The X340 is well-suited to playing movies. Its 13-inch screen offers impressive image quality -- a narrow vertical viewing angle notwithstanding -- and its glossy screen finish isn't so reflective that it restricts use in direct lighting conditions. Its 1,366x768-pixel resolution dictates a 16:10 aspect ratio, meaning you do get black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, but we can forgive the X340 this particular trespass.Asus has announced the U series of laptops: the U20A, U80V, U50Vg and UX50V are claimed to benefit from low power consumption and decent battery life. The U20A boasts a 12.1-inch screen, the U80V has a nice round 14-inches, and the U50V -- pictured here -- and UX50V both sporting 15.6-inch 16:9 high-definition screens. All the screens are LED-backlit displays with light-in-motion, an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts screen brightness. According to Asus, the result is 50 per cent less power consumption than traditional LCD panels. The MosaicGlow keyboard is also backlit. It's a chiclet keyboard, which means it's a pad of rubber buttons like on a remote control. We'll be getting samples in tomorrow so stay tuned for our hands-on first impressions.

The energy-saving tips don't stop at the screen. Under the bonnet the U20 and UX50 models include Intel's CULV, or Consumer Ultra Low Voltage processor. Asus reckons it's as energy-frugal as an aging hippy living in a yurt in Birkenhead Park, and should therefore have a decent effect on battery life. Each model includes 4GB of DDR2 800MHz RAM memory, with a choice of storage from 250GB up to 500GB HDD. All four versions also have HDMI output, Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth 2.1.Laptops aren't the most serious of energy hogs. (Oink, oink.) But LG Electronics, the Korean company that's made everything from the Chocolate phone to the Swarovski-studded fridge, is hoping to make them even more power-efficient. Treehugger posted recently about the e-Book, which is powered by a biofuel cell and uses organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) instead of an LCD screen. Oh, and it's pretty enough that it was nominated for a Red Dot Award this year.

In yesterday's installment, I loaded some drivers and applications on Vista. Part of that day was spent away from an electrical outlet. The dual-core Acer TravelMate 8200 rated pretty highly in our CNET review, especially in terms of battery life, yet I returned to my desk midmorning yesterday to find that Vista had shut down prematurely because I'd run out of battery life. So I spent nearly all of my Saturday trying to prove this. I must admit that my colleague at CNET News.com Ina Fried also tipped me off to this potential bug in Vista, so I volunteered to investigate. Short of a full-on CNET Labs test, I decided upon three simple tests. First, operating on a fully charged battery, I would play a DVD movie in Windows Media Player 9 on Windows XP and record that time, then I'd repeat the above in Windows Media Player 11 on Windows Vista running with Aero (Microsoft's new 3D graphics system). Finally, I'd run the test again in Windows Media Player 11 in Windows Vista Standard mode. It's the new Vista graphics system, called GPU, that's the issue; when it's engaged, it really eats up battery life.

If you don't already know, Vista will run differently depending on the hardware. Lower-end machines will have a choice between Windows Vista Classic and Windows Vista Standard, which both give you many of the features in the new OS but without the 3D graphics. Higher-end machines will have those choices, plus Windows Vista Basic, which gives you more features, and Windows Vista Aero (the version with all the 3D bells and whistles). Mostly to get Aero, you must have a relatively new graphics card with a lot of built-in video memory. One thing I found in conducting the test is that Microsoft doesn't make it easy to switch between these modes. For desktop users, it's a moot point; you have AC power. But if you're working on a notebook and want to conserve every last second of battery life, you'll want to switch to a less graphics-intensive envirnoment. To do so in Vista, you first need to find Personalization And Appearance in the Control Panel, then choose Personalization > Visual Appearance. From Visual Appearance, click to Appearance Settings, then click "Open Classic appearance properties." Under Color Schemes, you have all the choices listed above, plus four monochromatic color schemes. The process of reducing or increasing your graphics output is not exactly intuitive.

OK, so what did I find? Under Windows XP, my Acer TravelMate 8200 enjoyed a comfortable 3 hours and 15 minutes of battery life--more than enough to watch any major motion picture released these days. But under Windows Vista Aero, my battery life dropped considerably, to a mere 2 hours. Under Windows Vista Standard, battery life did improve--to a whopping 2 hours and 15 minutes--better, but not enough to justify doing without all the glitz and glammor of Vista Aero. But once you've seen Vista Aero in action, it's really hard to do without. Microsoft's planning its whole Vista marketing campaign around Aero, though in reality many, many people will upgrade only to a relatively bland Vista Standard or Basic--sure you'll have built-in search and a new file structure, but it's the transparent windows and flip 3D effect you'll be wanting. For that, you'll need to buy a whole new machine with Windows Vista preinstalled. If you've bought a new PC within the last two years, I'd recommend staying with Windows XP until you absolutely need to upgrade, then buy a new Windows Vista machine.
Laptop battery maker Boston-Power on Wednesday said it has raised $55 million to expand its manufacturing, and develop lithium ion batteries for transportation and potentially other applications.

The Series D round was led by Foundation Asset Management, the investment arm of a Swedish foundation, along with existing investors Oak Investment Partners, Venrock, GGV Capital, and Gabriel Venture Partners. Altogether, 4-year old Boston-Power has raised $125 million.
Boston-Power's first product a long-lasting battery called Sonata, is available for Hewlett-Packard laptops. While the run time of current laptop batteries starts to degrade after about 150 charges, the Sonata can go for 1,000 charges without the same degradation, according to the company. It can also be charged quickly, getting 80 percent of capacity in half an hour. The Westborough, Mass.-based company has sought to make its batteries environmentally sustainable as well by not using PVC plastic or heavy metals--cadmium, arsenic, or mercury--in the manufacturing process.

With the fresh funding round, Boston-Power intends to boost its manufacturing, and develop batteries for cars and potentially for utility-level energy storage, co-founder and CEO Christina Lampe-Onnerud said."We took on the mission of creating a more satisfying experience with laptops, and now we can go into transportation more seriously," Lampe-Onnerud said. The funding--a sign of confidence in an energy technology company--comes at a time when many clean-tech start-ups are having to scale back with layoffs in order to preserve cash. Certain technology areas, including energy storage and energy efficiency, however, are better placed than others.Samsung, long an international laptop player, re-entered the U.S. computer market last year with a functional (if not exactly exciting) slate of systems, including the NC10 Netbook. Despite its generic looks, we liked its long battery life, and the follow-up N110 model is similarly impressive.

The $469 N110 manages to cram a 6-cell battery into a fairly slim frame, and also fixes the original's too-small touch pad. But, at almost $500, it's more expensive than the competition, despite offering the same Intel Atom/160GB HDD/1GB RAM components. The N110 remains a solid example of the form, but there are several sub-$400 Netbooks (such as the Lenovo S10) that do the same job for less. The Samsung N110 is a fairly anonymous-looking Netbook, with a matte black interior (accented by a very subtle maroon stripe around the outer edge), and a glossy, black lid. Unfortunately, the glossy surface of the lid was among the more smudge and fingerprint-friendly we've encountered, and keeping it looking clean for even a single day was a struggle. While not as thin as something like the HP Mini 1000, Samsung gets points for making a Netbook with a 6-cell battery that doesn't look like it has a kickstand.

The keyboard is of the more traditional tapered key design, with individual keys that are wider at the base, and narrower at the top. We've seen many more PC makers, including Dell, HP, and Asus, move to a flat-key design. Still, the keys were large and we were especially pleased to see a big right Shift key; that's one that sometimes gets butchered on compact keyboard layouts. The touch pad on the N110 is slightly larger than on the original, and is about as good as we've seen on a Netbook--it even includes a specially demarcated scroll zone. The 10.1-inch LCD display has a native resolution of 1,024x600, which is standard for Netbooks. That's generally fine for most Web surfing, but long, vertical pages and Word documents can require a lot of scrolling to read. We were, however, disappointed to see the matte screen finish of the original NC10 replaced with a glossy one. Most consumer laptops have glossy screens, but we generally find that the glare on the overly reflective glossy surface outweighs advantages, which include more vibrant colors and better overall brightness.

Batterie d'ordinateur Toshiba Satellite A100

HP Compaq 6530b Battery

While some laptops in this price range, such as the Dell Studio 1440-022B, Dell Studio XPS 1340-024B, and the HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx, feature dedicated graphics, the E105 relies on Intel's integrated chip that borrows resources from the main system memory. Gamers searching for a bargain should keep looking, but for general mainstream use, the Satellite E105-S1602 offers competitive performance for a mainstream laptop. It didn't take top honors on any of CNET Labs' application benchmarks, but--to borrow a line from the just-completed Tour de France--it finished with the peloton on each test (and none of our tests featured a breakaway group).Lengthy battery life is a key point in the Blue Label program, and Toshiba outfits the Satellite E105 with an eight-cell battery, which can hold on longer than a standard six-cell battery. It topped the 4-hour mark on our demanding video playback battery drain test. The 13-inch HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx uses a nine-cell battery and was able to last for more than 5 hours on the same test, while the 14-inch HP Pavilion dv4-1465dx hit the 5.5-hour mark, thanks to a 12-cell battery (it also weighs nearly a pound more than the Satellite E105).

Nearly every consumer laptop sold today is backed by a one-year warranty, but Best Buy customers said they wanted something more, and the Blue Label program doubles down on the length of the warranty. The Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602 is backed by a two-year term. You'll find user forums, driver downloads, and a toll-free support phone number on Toshiba's Web site. What a difference a hundred dollars makes in the world of budget laptops. For $550, there's the 18-inch Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8930 that doesn't have much going for it beyond its large screen and nice looks. Come up with another $100 and you can get the Toshiba Satellite A505-S6960. Its screen isn't as big at 16 inches, but the design is nearly the same and the performance and battery life noticeably better. It's not perfect, but it's certainly worth the extra money.

Toshiba used its Fusion Finish on the A505 with its sonic pattern in black onyx. It's a stylish look with a light-gray wavy pin-stripe pattern on a glossy black background on the lid, palmrests, and speaker surround above the keyboard. The speakers sound great, by the way, far above the laptop's budget price tag. The keyboard is comfortably large with a full number pad on the right end. The keys are flat like a chiclet-style keyboard, but they're set above the tray instead of the tray coming up and separating the keys. The keys are also somewhat slick, making it slightly unpleasant to type on, and due to the glossy nature of everything, the laptop collects a lot of fingerprints. A row of touch-sensitive media controls above the keyboard and a Webcam and mic above the screen round out the package. In all, it's a nice design despite our nit-picking.

It has a thick chassis made thicker by the extended-life battery that comes with this system. The battery adds weight and bulk compared to a standard six-cell pack and lifts the back of the keyboard off your lap or work surface. This provides better airflow under the notebook as well as an improved typing angle, but will make it a tighter squeeze into some laptop bags.
The 16-inch wide-screen LCD offers a 1,366x768 native resolution, which is typical for its size. As we've come to expect from Toshiba's laptops, it's a quality display with good color, contrast, and brightness. And of course the wide screen is great for doing side-by-side work between two apps or documents or whatever.
The I/O, port, and jack connections are what we expect from a laptop in this price range, though we were happy to find Toshiba's sleep-and-charge eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port and an HDMI out in attendance. Unfortunately, most of the connectors are crammed into the front half of the left side. If you plug in peripherals at a desk, there's a good chance you'll have all manner of cables snaking from that area. The only thing we really found lacking is built-in Bluetooth, but at this price it's not a shocker.

The Toshiba Satellite Toshiba Satellite A505-S6960 is a retail-only fixed configuration. However, the memory and hard-drive compartments are easily accessed through the bottom of the case should you want to do a post-purchase upgrades. For example, this model comes with 4GB of memory but can be expanded to 8GB total. The budget section of our Back-to-School roundup (laptops priced $500 to $699) consists of three Toshiba systems, including the A505, and an HP. Two of the systems--the Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8930 and HP G60-445DX--are powered by AMD dual-core processors that didn't offer much in the way of performance, even for their budget prices. However, both the A505-S6960 and Toshiba Satellite M505-S4945 run on a 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor. These two are more expensive, but there was a clear across-the-board performance advantage to the Intel chips in our tests.

It's hard to believe that it's possible to get a laptop with an 18-inch screen for less than $550 and have it be worth buying, too. But here's the Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8930: a massive notebook with a large, wide-screen display, AMD dual-core processor, plenty of memory, and a decently large hard drive, wrapped up in a fairly good-looking chassis. Too bad the performance and reasonable battery life are so lacking.Instead of just a flat solid color, Toshiba used its Fusion Finish on the P505D with its sonic pattern in black onyx. It's a light pinstripe pattern on a glossy black background on the lid, with palmrests, and speaker surround above the keyboard. The speakers sound great by the way, far above the laptop's budget price tag. The keyboard is large and comfortable with a full number pad on the right end. The keys are flat like a chiclet-style keyboard, but they float above the tray so you'll have to watch your cookie crumbs. They're also somewhat slick, making it slightly unpleasant to type on. Due to the glossy nature of everything, the laptop collects a lot of fingerprints. Overall, the P505D is a nice-looking package and is certainly what a majority of its cost went to.

To the right of the keyboard is a set of backlit touch-sensitive media controls, the power button, and an Eco mode key. This mode significantly cuts back on power usage by cutting back on display brightness and other nonessential features. It also shows a line graph to prove the power savings. The 18.4-inch wide-screen LCD display offers a 1,680x945native resolution, which is not standard for a screen this size. In fact, we've never tested a system with this size screen carrying such a low resolution. More standard for this size are resolutions of 1,920x1,080 or 1,900x1,200. Despite the lower resolution, the screen is good for just about anything you'll do on it, with decent color performance, brightness, and dynamic range. If those are two things you're interested in, you'll want to search out a P500-series laptop that actually has them.
Ports for the most part are what we expect to find on a system in this price range. Only the eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port is an anomaly, but it's a good one and has Toshiba's sleep-and-charge feature for charging devices even when the computer's sleeping. Also, though there are spots for HDMI and DisplayPort connections on the left side, they have been plugged up. If those are two things you're interested in, you'll want to check out another version of the P500 series that actually has them.

The Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8930 is a retail-only fixed configuration, so what you get is what you get. However, the memory and hard-drive compartments are easily accessed through the bottom of the case. This model comes with 4GB of memory, but can be expanded to 8GB total.Performance from the P505D-S8930 is a bit depressing. The budget section of our Back-to-School roundup (laptops priced $500 to $699) consists of three Toshiba systems, including the P505D, and an HP. The other two Toshiba laptops are more expensive, but they performed noticeably better on all of our tests. We're chalking it up to the middling AMD dual-core processor, another of which can be found in the similarly pitiful HP G60-445DX. In the end, though, you're not going to find an 18-inch laptop with better specs at this price. If you need the large screen, the performance of the P505D-S8930 will suffice for general productivity tasks, Web surfing, e-mail, mild multimedia enjoyment, and even some very light gaming. Just don't expect a lot of power simply because it's large.

So far, Dell's netbooks have been hit and miss. We liked the cute Inspiron Mini 9, but were less enamoured with the under-powered Inspiron Mini 12, so we were keen to see how the Inspiron Mini 10 shapes up. Our review sample was the latest, high-specification model, featuring a high-resolution screen and a speedy Intel Atom Z530 processor. As a result, it retails at the higher price point of ¡ê390 (other versions cost between ¡ê200 and ¡ê300). You can enter the code 'NRM1001' to see the full specification of this netbook on Dell's Web site. The Mini 10 has a black lid by default, but, for ¡ê25 extra, you can choose a red, green, pink, blue or white version. Alternatively, for ¡ê40 extra, you can get a model with a design from graphic artist Tristan Eaton. While these designs are certainly eye-catching, they're not really to our taste. The Mini 10 isn't as slim as some rivals, such as the Acer Aspire One 751, and matters are made worse by the fact that the large six-cell battery supplied with our sample protrudes downwards from the case by about 2cm. It would have looked less ungainly if it had simply protruded out the back of the chassis, as with most other netbooks.

Things improve when you get to the screen, partly because it's got a higher resolution that other 10-inch netbook displays we've seen. Rather than the usual 10-inch screen resolution of 1,024x600 pixels, the Mini 10's display sports a significantly higher resolution of 1,366x768 pixels. The extra resolution is a big help, especially when using the Web browser or working on Word documents, as it means you won't find yourself having to constantly scroll down to see more of the page, as you do on some other netbooks.
The screen is also very bright and has good colour fidelity, so photos and videos look excellent. Like most netbooks on the market at the moment, the Mini 10 has a small 1.3-megpaixel webcam above the display, which is handy for video calling on services like Skype. The screen is surrounded by a rather large bezel -- it's about 20mm thick. That makes us think that this netbook was either originally designed with a larger screen in mind or that Dell has intentionally gone for a larger form factor so it can squeeze in a bigger keyboard. Whatever the truth, thanks to its relatively big keys, the keyboard feels much more like one you'd find on a standard laptop. This is helped by the fact that Dell has opted for standard keys, rather than the calculator-style ones used on rivals like the Samsung N310.

Batterie d'ordinateur Toshiba Satellite T115D-S1125

Laptop Battery for Dell 312-0346

The 12-cell battery will get you through a day's worth of classes or meetings, but you're likely to return home with a sore shoulder. With its huge battery, the 14-inch Pavilion dv4-1465dx tips the scales at 5.9 pounds. The 14-inch Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602 weighs in at a more reasonable 5.1 pounds, and the 14-inch Dell Studio S1440-022B shuns an optical drive and weighs only 4.7 pounds. Further, the Pavilion's battery protrudes about an inch below the bottom of the system but doesn't run the whole length (only about three-quarters) so when the laptop is resting on your thighs, it lists to the left. When seated at a desk or table, however, the battery provides a comfortable angle for typing. As with past Pavilion laptops, the glossy finish on the dv4's touch pad improves the overall design of the laptop, lending it yet another chrome accent, but most laptop touch pads feature matte finish material, which allows your finger to move across the surface with little friction. The glossy finish here feels grabby. You also leave a record of recent cursor movements on the touch pad in the form of a swirl of fingerprints and smudges. The touch pad is also very narrow, measuring only 1.5 inches tall by 3 inches wide. In the plus column for the touch pad are the wide and quiet mouse buttons below it, the vertical scroll area along its right edge, and a tiny on/off button above it.

Unlike the odd dimensions of the touch pad, the keyboard looks and feels like a natural fit on the Pavilion dv4's 14-inch chassis. The keys have a glossy finish that helps the overall look but detracts from the actual typing experience somewhat. The keys felt a bit too slick, though they do feature good travel and are very quiet. We prefer the keyboard on the Dell Studio S1440-022B. Touch-sensitive buttons for mute and Wi-Fi sit above the keyboard, plus a volume control that we wish was more responsive. Media transport buttons that resided here on previous Special Edition Pavilions have been moved to the Function keys.
As opposed the Studio S1440's wide 16:9 aspect ratio display and its 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, the features the more traditional laptop 16:10 aspect ratio with a 1,280x800-pixel resolution. It provides a less cinematic feel (movies will leave a letterbox), but the additional horizontal lines are appreciated when scrolling down long Web pages and Word docs. The HP's screen features a glossy coating, which helps colors pop when viewing photos and movies but also is a fairly egregious offending in terms of producing glare and distracting reflections.

The Pavilion's Altec Lansing stereo speakers are adequate, but they can't match the integrated speakers on the Dell Studio S1440, which produced a better sound: louder and clearer at max volume. The Pavilion dv4's audio output will suffice for movie dialogue and effects, but you'll want to use the headphone jacks (there are two) for music.
The Pavilion dv4-1465dx provides a decent selection of ports, including HDMI, eSATA, and two headphone jacks, but the Dell Studio S1440 provides those plus DisplayPort and FireWire connections. The lack of 802.11n Wi-Fi is a curious omission; most mainstream laptops offer this faster wireless connection. In the plus column, the laptop includes a small IR remote for controlling the action in Media Center; when not in use, it can be stowed in the ExpressCard slot.

As a member of Best Buy's Next Class program, the Pavilion dv4-1465dx includes a useful software bundle. Inside the box, you'll find a full copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 and 12 months of virus protection by way of Norton Internet Security 2009. Dell must have been a tougher negotiator with Norton; its Next Class program member, the Dell Studio S1440, offers 15 months of virus protection. On CNET Labs application benchmarks, the HP Pavilion dv4-1465d turned in a good showing, finishing among the leaders. None of its test scores stand out, which isn't surprising when you see it features a configuration similar to the other systems: Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, 4GB of memory, a 5400rpm hard drive, and integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics.Where the HP Pavilion dv4-1465dx stands out is with battery life, and it had better since it requires you to lug around a mammoth 12-cell battery. The laptop ran for an impressive five hours and 31 minutes on CNET Labs' demanding video playback battery drain test. You can expect even longer performance under more typical Windows use where you aren't taxing the system by playing a video. While its battery life is unquestionably impressive, the trimmer 13-inch Pavilion dv3-2155dx and the lightweight Dell Studio S1440 come close, within almost an hour of the dv4-1465dx's battery life.

Moixa Energy USBCell AA batteries are practical for an on-the-go gadget addict. These attractive, compact batteries resemble other nickel metal hydride AAs, except for a bright green cap covering the USB plug. Instead of tossing them in the trash or nestling them into a recharging unit when out of juice, you can pop these into a USB port on any laptop or other USB device. The USBCell design is excellent and feels sturdy. When opened, the cap reveals a pair of tensile cords attaching it to the battery. We pulled and pulled, but couldn't break them. The batteries' LEDs light up around the base while inside a USB port, and flash slowly some 20 minutes later when the battery warms up to a 90 percent charge. The light turns off when the AAs are ready for use.Unfortunately, depending on how close your USB ports are to each other, you might not be able to plug in two or more USBCell batteries side by side at the same time. That's a major flaw, perhaps, if your laptop only features two side-by-side USB ports and you lack a third-party recharging kit.

USBCell AAs can replace comparable batteries altogether, especially if you have USB ports at the ready. But we wouldn't throw away standard batteries. Instead, we found it useful to carry both the USBCell batteries in addition to a pack of rechargeable NiMHs.Luckily, USBCells also fit into standard AA battery chargers. That could take up to 7 hours to recharge in a 250-milliamp charger. The vendor doesn't recommend 2-hour, 600-milliamp chargers.
Our rechargeable Duracell NiMH AAs were rated to store 2,300-milliamp hours, eclipsing the 1,300-milliamp hours of the USBCell equivalent. We found that a pair of fully charged USBCells lasted in a Canon point-and-shoot camera after shooting close to 600 pictures, while the Duracells lasted for more than 1,000 shots. In a small Flip video camera, the USBCells lasted for several hours of footage before needing more juice (we didn't measure the life of the other AAs in this device for contrast). USBCell batteries are meant to last 500 cycles, or several hundred charges.

The Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602 uses the same chassis as last year's Satellite E105-S1402, which is to say it's a departure from the standard Satellite styling. The boxy shape looks very different from the sloped, angled edges found on other Satellite laptops; the straight, vertical edges bring to mind the shape of an Apple MacBook. The E105 chassis is draped in a silver--almost pewter--color with Toshiba's Fusion finish, a pleasing, subtle pattern of pin stripes and curved lines on the lid, keyboard deck, screen bezel, and touch pad.The keyboard is exceedingly comfortable--akin to the quality found with a ThinkPad keyboard. There's little of the flex that can be found on some keyboards, and the keys offer good travel along with backlighting, a tenet of Best Buy's Blue Label program. The strip of illuminated, touch-sensitive media control buttons to the right of the keyboard, however, means that some of the keys are shorter than you'd expect from a keyboard on a 14-inch laptop, particularly the space bar and right Ctrl key in the bottom row. And on more than one occasion, we found the volume mysteriously decreasing until we discovered our pinky finger had come to rest on the volume-down button at the bottom of the vertical strip of media control keys. We'd prefer that strip of keys run horizontally above the keyboard.

We have no complaints, however, about the touch pad. Toshiba's Fusion finish pattern runs uninterrupted across the touch pad, but while the rest of the laptop features a glossy finish, the touch pad has a matte finish for a comfortable mousing experience. Many laptops, HP's Pavilions being prime examples, have a glossy touch pad, which doesn't provide the best feel when dragging your finger across its surface. Below the touch pad, two wide but squat mouse buttons flank an always appreciated fingerprint reader. The laptop's 14.1-inch screen features a 1,280x800 native resolution. The screen has a glossy finish, but it's far from the worst offender in terms of producing glare and reflections. It also offers only merely average image quality. During movie playback, we saw some color banding. Below average is the audio output from the two stereo speakers located on either side of the laptop's front edge. Movies and music sounded muddled and tinny. At maximum volume, we had to lean in close and still could barely make out Sam Elliott's intro to The Big Lebowski. Integrated speakers are limited by their nature, but the E105-S1602's two speakers failed to meet even our low expectations.

Above the screen sit a Webcam and built-in microphone for video chats. Below are two sturdy hinges that keep the screen firmly rooted in place.
The Satellite E105 provides an average allotment of connections, serving up three USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port, and a multiformat media card reader. An eSATA connection is becoming a more frequent addition to laptops, and one of the E105's USB ports doubles as an eSATA port for faster data transfer times to external hard drives with this interface. You won't find FireWire, which is found on less and less laptops these days, nor will you find a ExpressCard slot. The most surprising inclusion here is an FM radio jack; Toshiba includes a small FM antenna in the box should you want to listen to the radio over the airwaves instead of streaming it over the Internet. The retail-only Satellite E105-S1602 is available in a single fixed configuration, based on Intel's Centrino 2 platform. It features the 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo P7350 processor, which is basically the same chip as the Core 2 Duo P8400 found in last year's E105 model. The only real difference between the two processors is clock speed: the P7350 is clocked at 2.0GHz, and the P8400 runs at 2.26GHz. Though it trims $300 off the price of its predecessor, the E105-S1602 features a larger hard drive, replacing the 320GB unit with a 500GB drive.

HP Compaq HSTNN-DB28 Battery

While we like the size and weight of this 13-inch Pavilion, the bigger, bulkier Pavilion dv4--1465dx is a member of Best Buy's Next Class program. The dv3-2155mx is not. The most obvious benefit of this program, which gathered input from students about what they want in a laptop, is a useful software bundle. The similarly configured dv4-1465dx costs only $20 more than the dv3-2155mx and includes a full copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 and 12 months of virus protection by way of Norton Internet Security 2009. You're left with only Microsoft Works and a 60-day trial of Norton here.As with past Pavilion laptops, we don't enjoy the glossy finish on the dv3's touch pad. Sure, it improves the overall design of the laptop, lending it yet another chrome accent, but most laptop touch pads feature matte finish material, which allows your finger to move across the surface with little friction. The glossy finish here feels "grabby," and instead of being centered below the space bar like on most laptops, it's centered on the laptop. The result is frequent accidental cursor movements made by our right hand and thumb. The touch pad is also very narrow, measuring only 1.5 inches tall by 3.2 inches wide. In the plus column for the touch pad are the wide and quiet mouse buttons below it, the vertical scroll area along its right edge, and a tiny on/off button above it.

Unlike the odd dimensions of the touch pad, the keyboard looks and feels like a natural fit on the Pavilion dv3's 13-inch chassis. The keys have a glossy finish that helps the overall look but detracts from the actual typing experience somewhat. To these fingertips, the keys felt a bit too slick, though they do feature good travel and are very quiet. We prefer the keyboard on the Dell Studio S1440-022B. Touch-sensitive buttons for mute and Wi-Fi sit above the keyboard, plus a volume control.
The display measures 13.3 inches and features an extra-wide 16:9 aspect ratio that matches that of movies and HD video. With 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, the Pavilion dv3-2155mx can display 720p video. But it can require more scrolling down long Web pages or Word documents. A wide-screen display with a 16:10 display at or near this size typically features a 1,280x800-pixel resolution, which has more horizontal lines. The screen features a glossy coating, but it's one of the better examples in terms of keeping glare and reflections to a minimum.

For integrated audio, the Altec Lansing speakers reach an impressive level at max volume, though the Dell Studio S1440 produced clearer sound at high levels. The Pavilion dv3-2155mx's audio output will suffice for movies and YouTube, but you'll want to plug in headphones for music. The Pavilion dv3-2155mxx provides a decent selection of ports, including HDMI and eSATA, but the Dell Studio S1440 provides those plus DisplayPort and FireWire connections. The lack of 802.11n Wi-Fi is a curious omission; most mainstream laptops offer this faster wireless connection. Likewise, the dv3-2155mx doesn't provide Gigabit Ethernet--only 10/100 Ethernet. In the plus column, the laptop includes a tiny IR remote for controlling the action in Media Center; when not in use, it can be stowed in the ExpressCard/34 slot.On CNET Labs application benchmarks, the HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx finished in the middle of the pack, keeping pace with other systems that feature the same configuration: Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, 4GB of memory, a 5400rpm hard drive, and integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics.

The HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx packs a small 13.3-inch screen with a movie- and HD-friendly 16:9 aspect ratio and a big, nine-cell battery. Weighing an even 5 pounds, it's a highly portable laptop, but thanks to its extended-cell battery, it's not much lighter (and in one case, heavier) than larger 14-inch models. The long-running battery will get you through a double feature, and watching movies ought to be a priority if you're thinking about pulling the trigger on the Pavilion dv3-2155mx.The dragon-and-floral imprint finish will also need to appeal to you; the Pavilion dv3-2155mx is a fixed configuration retail model with one and only one chassis option. There aren't any deal-breakers to be found on this $729 thin-and-light laptop--depending on your opinions of dragons--but the $749 Dell Studio S1440-022B offers a larger display and a lighter weight (but no DVD burner), while the $799 Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602 is only a hair heavier and features a 14-inch display, backlit keys, and a two-year warranty.

HP Pavilion laptops stand out from the mainstream pack by offering a bit of flair with their imprint finishes. The Pavilion dv3-2155mx is no different, with a dragon-and-floral print running vertically through its indigo-blue chassis. The dragons can be found on the lid and also run across the wrist rest and touch pad. There isn't much contrast between the bluish-silver dragon print and background color, so if you're scared off by the thought of dragons populating your laptop, check it out in person before drawing a conclusion. Still, the overall effect is more "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" than Dungeons & Dragons.Like the 14-inch Pavilion dv4-1465dx, the Pavilion dv3-2155mx features an extended-cell battery that protrudes from the bottom of the system. The dv3-2155mx has a trimmer battery, a nine-cell unit as opposed to the huge 12-cell battery that weighs down the dv4-1465dx. The nine-cell battery juts out of the bottom of the laptop by 0.75 inch, and its rounded shape makes a convenient handle when carrying about the laptop with the lid closed. However, the battery doesn't run the whole length (only about three-quarters) of the laptop, so when the laptop is resting on your thighs, it lists to the right. The battery also creates a ridge that's uncomfortable when on your lap; the weight-bearing ridge begins to dig into your thigh after a time. When seated at a desk or table, though, the battery provides a comfortable angle for typing.

While we like the size and weight of this 13-inch Pavilion, the bigger, bulkier Pavilion dv4--1465dx is a member of Best Buy's Next Class program. The dv3-2155mx is not. It's also a member of Best Buy's Next Class program, in which the big box store elicited feedback from students about what they wanted in a laptop. In addition to a good price and a good balance between portability and screen size, students requested a useful software bundle and a long-lasting battery.

This last item must be of paramount importance to those eying this $749 Pavilion. It runs for an impressively long time, but it uses a gigantic 12-cell battery that detracts from its portability. The Dell Studio S1440-022B is more than a pound lighter (but ditches the optical drive to cut weight), features a superior keyboard and touch pad, better graphics, while still offering great battery life. Also check out the $799 Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602, which we liked for its overall design, decent battery life, backlit keyboard, and two-year warranty. If you're willing to lug around a 6-pound, 14-inch laptop, the Pavilion dv4-1465dx boasts a flashy design, useful collection of ports, and competitive performance. Plus, the gigantic 12-cell battery comes as close to an all-day running time on a single charge as we've seen for a non-Netbook system.Like previous Special Edition Pavilions, the dv4-1465dx features a chassis with an atypical color, imprinted with a patterned design. Compared with crashing-waves design on the Pavilion dv4-1275mx we looked at earlier this year, the mocha-colored dv4-1465dx features a more subtle design that HP calls a Digital Plaid Imprint finish. It's a pattern of tiny dots that compose a series of squares. The overall effect is far from overdone and should help the Pavilion dv4-1465dx turn heads on campus and still fit alongside ThinkPads and other corporate laptops in the board room.

Accu HITACHI DS 12DVF2

HP 511872-001 Battery

The 160GB hard drive on our review sample provides ample room for storing a wide assortment of files. It'll easily accommodate a couple of hundred standard-definition movies, or -- if you're obsessed with music -- around 40,000 average-sized MP3 files. The HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx represents a minor update to the company's consumer tablet. Compared with the TouchSmart tx2z we reviewed earlier this year, which carried a baseline price $999 that quickly rose as you upped the specs, the retail-only TouchSmart tx2-1275 is a fixed configuration model priced at a reasonable $849.At the heart of the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx is its rotating touch-screen display with multitouch support. Using multitouch gestures is unquestionably fun and potentially useful, but this functionality requires a few sacrifices. For starters, the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx can't match the performance of similarly priced laptops with Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Secondly, the battery life is poor. And finally, while the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx boasts an eye-catching design with one of HP's Imprint finishes, it's a bit portly for a 12-inch ultraportable. The TouchSmart tx2-1275dx bears resemblance to HP's Pavilion laptops, with its tapered edges, rounded corners, and Imprint finish. The tablet features a charcoal gray chassis with a silver design that looks like bubbles, clouds, or perhaps amoebas. Call it funky yet subtle.

At 4.8 pounds, the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx is one of the heavier ultraportables you'll come across. We typically see 13- and 14-inch laptops clock in around the 5-pound mark. The Dell Studio S1440-022B is a 14-inch model that weighs an ounce less than the TouchSmart tx2 (though it skips out on an optical drive). You can save weight by replacing the TouchSmart's DVD burner with an included plastic space-holder.The keyboard is quiet and relatively roomy, for a 12-inch laptop. The page up and down, home, and end keys that normally reside along the right edge of a keyboard have been relocated to right-hand side of the tiny top row of F keys. If you're accustomed to navigating Web pages and Word docs via the page up and page down keys, you might want to instead get acquainted with the pen flicks functionality of the touch screen. Simply flick the included stylus or your fingertip up or down a long document or Web page to scroll. A grid of tiny dimples comprises the touch pad, which is very responsive. A smooth strip runs down along the right side, which acts as a vertical scroll area that's easy to find blindly.

The 12.1-inch wide-screen LCD screen offers a 1,280x800-pixel native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size. Of course this being a tablet, the screen is a little more important than a standard laptop LCD. The TouchSmart tx2-1275dx has a dual-mode display, meaning you can use a digital pen for drawing and taking notes as well as your finger for navigating, opening apps, and flipping through photos. Thanks to N-trig's DuoSense technology, the screen features some multitouch functionality. Multitouch wasn't working initially on our review unit, but a quick trip to HP's support site to download a new N-trig DuoSense driver corrected the problem. Multitouch lets you can zoom in and out of photos by moving two fingers closer together or farther apart. You can also rotate a photo by anchoring your thumb and moving your index finger in a circular motion. And you can bring up HP MediaSmart interface by drawing a wavy "m" on the desktop. While these multitouch gestures are fun to play around with, simply clicking or tapping the rotate button in your photo viewer is faster. Likewise, the MediaSmart button that sits right next to the display is faster for starting the app. Windows 7 will offer native multitouch support, which we hope will lead to increased functionality.

The display sits on a single, rotating hinge, and the tiny-but-decent-sounding Altec Lansing speakers are built into the bottom of the display. This gives you three options for screen placement: use it like a traditional laptop, face it away from the keyboard for using just the display (for movie or photo viewing), or flatten it down on top of the keyboard for use as a tablet. The screen will autorotate, but there's a rotate key on the bezel should you need it, along with a fingerprint reader and a Webcam.Despite the tight dimensions on this 12-inch tablet, it serves up a useful collection of ports. We wish there was an HDMI port, but we were pleased to see Bluetooth included. We were not so pleased to see the virgin hard drive (and desktop) cluttered with bloatware, trial offers for Quicken, Juno, NetZero, and so on. Like it does with its Pavilion laptops, HP includes a tiny Media Center remote control, which can be housed in the ExpressCard/34 slot. Likewise, the tablet's stylus can be tucked away in a slot on the right side.

The HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx uses a dual-core AMD Turion X2 processor and trailed similarly priced laptops that feature Intel Core 2 Duo chips on CNET Labs' benchmarks. The TouchSmart lagged behind the slowest Core 2 Duo-based laptop on our multitasking test by a healthy 28 percent. It was a whopping 49 percent slower than the closet Core 2 Duo laptop on our Photoshop benchmark. We will say that during anecdotal testing, the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx felt peppy and responsive, under a variety of conditions that included many multitasking scenarios. And we didn't notice any lag when using the multitouch gestures as we did earlier this year. The TouchSmart tx2-1275dx uses a six-cell battery and lasted only 2 hours 21 minutes on CNET Labs' video playback battery drain test. It didn't last much longer under typical Windows use where we weren't constantly playing a video; the battery ran out around the 2.5-hour mark. For a tablet that's obviously intended to spend a lot of time on the go, we expected better.

Included are HP's priority service and support for tx2 customers featuring an industry-standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty, toll-free 24-7 phone support, and the promise of 1-hour responses to e-mail. The comprehensive support Web site includes real-time chat with a technical support representative, FAQs, and driver downloads.Priced at $899, Dell's retail-only Studio XPS X1340-024B sits at the high end of the mainstream laptop group. Move up in price, and you find laptops built to fit specific user profiles, namely gaming systems with high-end graphics and models with large displays and Blu-ray drives built chiefly for media consumption. Beneath its upscale exterior, the Studio XPS X1340 features a fairly typical mainstream configuration that should help it appeal to a wide audience. It offers a faster Core 2 Duo processor than other mainstream laptops that cost $100 to $170 less, which helped it finish at or near the front of the group in testing. And though it uses integrated graphics, it is capable of running some 3D games. Lastly, extras such a backlit keyboard, edge-to-edge glass on the display, and facial recognition software also help to justify the higher price compared with other mainstream laptops at retail this summer.

Still, the Studio X1340 is not without its warts. For starters, it runs hot. And for a 13-inch laptop, it's a tad on the hefty side. Ultimately, the deal breaker for many might be its poor battery life.By way of comparison, the 13-inch HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx weighs a hair less (while carrying a big, extended-cell battery) and runs much longer. The same can be said for Dell's Studio S1440-022B, which is even more impressive when you consider it has a larger 14-inch display. The Studio S1440 includes a superior software bundle, too, with a full copy of Microsoft Office and 15 months of virus protection. Lastly, don't overlook the Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602, which features a backlit keyboard, good battery life, and a two-year warranty. The Dell Studio XPS X1340 boasts a unique look, with its rounded hinges supporting the display and angled shape. The tapered chassis measures (with the lid closed) a rather thick 1.6 inches along the back edge and narrows to 1.2 inches in front. A silver stripe cuts across the lid, separating the piano-black cover from a strip of faux leather. The leather-like strip provides a comfortable grip when toting the laptop around, and, depending on your taste, it either enhances or detracts from the overall design.

Like the Toshiba Satellite E105, the X1340 features a backlit keyboard, which is incredibly useful in low-light situations. It's one of those features, like the two-finger scroll on MacBooks, that once you have it, you find it hard to live without. The keys themselves are quiet, flat, and roomy. The touch pad is smaller than average, running only 2.5 inches wide by 1.5 inches tall. The mouse buttons are quiet and feature an illuminated stripe when the keyboard backlighting is enabled. A row of touch-sensitive media controls sits above the keyboard, along with buttons for turning the Wi-Fi antenna off and on, and ejecting a disc from the slot-loading DVD burner. The 1,280x800-pixel resolution on the 13.3-inch LCD screen is standard for a thin-and-light laptop, and is the same as you'd find on the 13-inch MacBook Pro. The glass covering the display runs edge-to-edge, which adds to its slick looks. A Webcam sits above the display, and with the included facial recognition software, which Dell calls FastAccess, you can set it up to log in to Windows by scanning your face instead of typing a password. While it's better software than what we saw with the Asus UX50V, it still takes too long in nearly every instance to recognize your face. While it's a cool trick, it's faster to simply type your password.
