Batterie d'ordinateur Acer Aspire 5253

Accu BOSCH 2 607 335 143

Batterie d'ordinateur toshiba Qosmio F60-10J

Laptop Battery for Dell 7f948

While the keyboard is excellent, the trackpad is one of the worst we've used on any netbook. The buttons are integrated into the surface area of the pad, rather than sitting beneath it, as with most other netbooks and laptops. When you press on the buttons, the whole front of the pad pivots downwards. Also, when you go to click the button, the pad area around it sometimes registers your finger as having moved to that position and so moves the on-screen cursor accordingly. This quickly becomes extremely annoying. The 1101HA is part of Asus' Eee PC Seashell netbook range, all of which are beautiful to look at, but have little common with actual seabound molluscs. Like its smaller siblings, the 1008HA and 1005HA, we're impressed by the glossy finish on the lid (it's available in both black and white), the dynamic wedge-shaped profile and the general solidity of the chassis.

The 1101HA doesn't have the same portability as its smaller counterparts. It's an inch or so wider and deeper, but that hasn't put us off. The laptop remains light at 1.4kg, and will slot into most hand- or manbags without a fuss. Unfortunately, Asus hasn't taken full advantage of the 1101HA's extra girth. It still has just three USB, one Ethernet and one D-Sub VGA video output port, an SDHC card reader, plus headphone and mic ports, which is the netbook norm. The trackpad has a peculiar mottled finish, but multi-touch gesture control is handy
Neither has Asus used the extra space to install a significantly larger keyboard, but that's not a complete disaster. It uses a keyboard that -- as far as we can tell -- is identical to the one on the Eee PC 1008HA, which is a good thing, because that machine was generally very easy to type on. It also gets the same MacBook-style multi-touch mouse trackpad, which, despite the odd, mottled surface, is handy for scrolling through documents and Web browsers.
The aforementioned 11-inch display really is the star of the 1101HA's show. Not only is it an inch larger than the vast majority of netbooks -- meaning it's slightly easier to use for long periods -- but it also has a higher resolution than most netbooks. Its LCD panel runs natively at 1,366x768 pixels, rather than the 1,024x600 pixels you usually get on 10-inch devices, so there's slightly more desktop space to manipulate application windows.

Sadly, there's no point in opening multiple windows. The 1101HA uses a 1.33GHz Intel Z520 CPU, which -- despite working alongside the customary 1GB of RAM -- has only ever proven to be lethargic in our past experiences. If you're expecting the 1101HA to be faster because it's bigger, you'd better think again. The 1101HA's keyboard is very easy to type on, as you'd expect from a netbook this size
The device doesn't let itself down elsewhere. It ships with a fairly typical 160GB hard drive, which provides ample storage. This being an Eee PC, it also benefits from an additional 10GB of 'free' online storage. This isn't a great deal, but it comes in handy when you need to backup your most precious files to a location you can access from any Web-enabled computer.According to Asus, the UX series is 'an intricately crafted series of notebooks that provide both contemporary style and effortless computing on the go'. In human speak, that means they're thin and light, look awesome and have funky new components. The UX50V, reviewed here, is being sold by online retailers for around ¡ê910.

To say the UX50V is one of the prettier laptops we've seen would be an understatement. We're constantly showing it off to friends and colleagues as if it were some sort of precious newborn child, and -- like the cutest of freshly birthed offspring -- it never fails to elicit a positive response. It looks like pretty much any other laptop in the world with its lid closed, but, crack it open, and you'll be suitably impressed. We're particular fans of the screen's edge-to-edge glass, the matte black keyboard with isolated buttons, and the highly impractical, but gorgeous, mirror-effect wrist rest.
Most of the laptop's ports are located at the rear. It's a neat, if slightly awkward, solution
The isolated keyboard is particularly worthy of praise. It's very comfortable to type on and, although there isn't quite enough travel in the keys, we had no problem getting up to full typing speed. We also love the fact that the keyboard is backlit, making it easy to work at night without turning the lights on, and the presence of a dedicated numerical keypad.

The aforementioned mirror-esque wrist rest is both a gift and a curse. It's fabulous to look at, and comes in handy as a mirror. But, as with all mirrors, it's almost impossible to keep clean. You may have the cleanest wrists in the world, but it'll be filthy within minutes of use. The mouse trackpad, which sports the same finish, gets even filthier, as -- unless you're using a USB mouse -- it'll collect more fingerprints than a forensic scientist.
The UX50V's 15.6-inch, 1,366x768-pixel display does a fabulous impression of a mirror, too. It's one of the most reflective displays we've seen, so, while it provides excellent perceived contrast levels and looks great when playing movies, it's almost impossible to use without also seeing your reflection. This, in conjunction with the mirrored wrist rest, makes the UX50V annoying and somewhat uncomfortable to use, as you're always contending with unwanted reflections.

The mirror finish on the wrist rest and mouse trackpad looks great, but attracts grime
Asus has tried to keep the UX50V's ports as well-hidden as possible. The right side is home only to a slot-loading DVD drive, while, on the left, you'll find a Wi-Fi on/off switch and -- concealed behind a flap -- a memory card slot and USB port. The rear of the system is more densely populated. Two additional USB ports join a HDMI socket, D-Sub VGA output and Ethernet jack. You'll also find mic and headphone jacks, although their placement at the rear makes them slightly awkward to use.The UX50V costs a pretty penny, so one might expect it to be fitted with the latest super-fast components. That isn't the case -- it's fitted with the latest super-slow components. It uses a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 CPU, which is designed to maximise battery life at the expense of all-out speed. Asus has thrown in a whopping 4GB of RAM, however, which helps applications launch relatively quickly and keeps the system running smoothly. The UX50V's graphics system is pretty fancy. It uses both an Nvidia GeForce G105M graphics adaptor and an integrated Intel graphics chip, and can cycle between the pair, depending on the user's needs. The latter is designed for casual use and helps maximise battery life, while the former offers -- and consumes -- significantly more power.

We were very fond of the previous version of Asus' Eee PC, the 1008HA, which represented a radical design change from the boxy Eee PCs of the past. But its high-end (for a Netbook) price, at $429, slipped just over the line for many, and its nonremovable battery wasn't as long-lasting as we've seen in other Eee PCs.The latest revision, called the 1005HA, keeps the slim, tapered design but ditches the somewhat cumbersome cover flaps on the ports and adds a more traditional six-cell battery. This means a slightly thicker and heavier system, but also one that's our current Netbook battery life leader. Add in a slightly shaved price tag, down to a more reasonable $389 (although some perfectly usable Netbooks are down to $299), and you have what may be our new go-to Netbook choice.

The design of the 1005HA is based on the (slightly slimmer) 1008HA model. There's a tapered front lip, but the new model lacks some of the space-saving features of the 1008HA, such as the angled Ethernet jack and hidden mini-VGA port. Rather than a potentially smaller SSD drive, there's a standard 160GB HDD inside, augmented by a free 10GB online data storage subscription for backing up files to a remote server. While slightly thicker and heavier than other recent Netbooks, it's still a vast improvement over the first few generations of mini laptops, which had a universally boxy, toylike feel. Our review unit was glossy black, which was prone to picking up fingerprints; blue is also available. The flat, wide keyboard, similar to what we saw on the Eee PC 1008HA, is among the better Netbook keyboards we've used, and the full-size right Shift key is one of those things you don't realize is very important until it goes missing. The touch pad is demarcated by a rectangle of raised dots on the wrist rest, and works well, although we found ourselves going into the touch pad settings and jacking up the default pointer speed.

A single quick-access button above the keyboard is for disabling the touch pad (handy if you're using an external USB mouse), and Asus' different preset power profiles are accessible by hitting the FN key plus the space bar. New to this model is a software suite that acts as a software dock popping out of the top of the screen (by default, but switchable). From there, you can access functions such as screen brightness presets and media players. Most Netbook users we talk to are no-nonsense types who just want to surf the Web or send e-mail, so learning the ins and outs of a proprietary menu bar system may not be high in the list of priorities. The 10.1-inch LED display offers a 1,024x600 native resolution, which is standard for a Netbook, although higher-end systems are starting to add 1,366x768 display options. The backlit LED allows the lid to be very thin, and also use less power than a more traditional LCD display.

The 1005HA offers a fairly standard set of ports and connections, lacking only the ExpressCard slot we've seen on some high-end Netbooks. We prefer to have our connections out in the open, rather than hidden behind hinged plastic doors (as in the 1008HA model), although we have to admit, the 1008's tiny, angled Ethernet jack was an impressive engineering feat. With Intel's N280 Atom CPU, the system was, not surprisingly, on par with other current Netbooks, even those with the slightly slower N270 version of the ubiquitous Atom. We have yet to meet an Atom-powered Netbook that vastly outperformed or underperformed the pack. The basic rule of thumb is that for basic tasks such as word processing, Web surfing, and e-mail, an Atom Netbook is more than adequate, as long as you keep your expectations modest.

The real star here is the system's battery life. Asus has always had some of the longest-lived Netbooks, and the new 1005HA got an impressive 6 hours and 51 minutes in our video playback battery drain test--about 30 minutes more than our previous leader, the Eee PC 1000HE, and more than 2 hours better than the nonremovable battery in the 1008HA model.Asus also includes its Super Hybrid Engine feature in the system, which is essentially a series of power-saving presets to further extend battery life. These are mostly power consumption tweaks one could perform individually, but it's handy to have them all in one place.Samsung has produced some of our favourite netbooks, including the NC10, which offers great battery life, and the N110, which boasts a top-notch keyboard and trackpad. The prices of the company's netbooks, however, have been steadily creeping upwards with each new launch, and the N310 continues the trend, clocking in at around ¡ê380. Samsung is obviously hoping this netbook's unique design will convince people that it's worth the extra outlay.

Accu HITACHI FWH 12DF

Laptop Battery for Dell 312-0522

Despite its angled, sleek appearance, the Studio XPS 1340 is surprisingly hefty, weighing 5.1 pounds. The new 13-inch MacBook Pro is a half pound lighter, while the older, heavier Lucite MacBook weighs the same as the Studio XPS 1340. Even with a big nine-cell battery, the 13-inch HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx weighs 5 pounds, and the 14-inch Dell Studio S1440-022B weighs only 4.7 pounds (but ditches the optical drive to save weight). One final note about the design: the Dell Studio XPS X1340-024B runs hot. After 15 or so minutes of typical use (Windows apps and Firefox, mind you, not gaming), the left side of the laptop begins to cook your thigh. A relatively quiet fan spins to cool the GPU, but it would seem to be overmatched. The laptop seized up several times during our review process, and it's worth noting that a few online customer reviews of the X1340 also reported heat issues and instability problems.

Dell is on the leading edge of laptop connection collections. HDMI is becoming more common in laptops, but those offering a DisplayPort connection are still in the minority. Surprisingly, a VGA port makes the cut here, though it was left off of the similar Studio S1440. FireWire is slowly fading from popularity, but a four-pin FireWire port shows up here, along with an eSATA port (which doubles as the second USB 2.0 port) for faster data transfer times to an external drive. The X1340 costs $100 to $170 more than many of the other mainstream retail laptops with which it shares shelf space, but some of the added cost goes toward a more powerful CPU. The system uses Intel's 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo P8600, which is clocked faster than the 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T6500 chip found in competing models. Compared with the T6500, the P8600 also operates on a faster frontside bus (1,066MHz to 800MHz) and has more L2 cache (3MB to 2MB). The X1340 also uses fast 1,066MHz DDR3 memory and a 7,200rpm hard drive; you'll typically find 800MHz DDR2 memory and a 5,4000rpm drive in laptops at or just below this price.

The Studio XPS X1340 features an integrated graphics chip, the Nvidia GeForce 9400M, which is the same GPU used in the MacBook. It posted 25 frames per second in Unreal Tournament III at 1,280x800 pixels, which is respectable for an integrated graphics solution that must borrow resources from main system memory (in this case, it borrows up to 256MB of the system's fast DDR3 memory). Dial back the resolution and detail settings a bit, and you'll get playable frame rates. The X1340 ran for a disappointing 2 hours 21 minutes on CNET Labs' video playback battery drain test, which is far less than the 3-plus hours we'd expect from a 13-inch laptop on this test. The HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx offers more than double the battery life, and while it uses a larger, extended-cell battery, it still manages to weigh less than the X1340.

It won't be the lightest laptop on campus this fall, and it may not fit into every knapsack or laptop bag, but if you're willing and able to tote around a little extra weight, the Sony Vaio VGN-NW125J/T holds great appeal for its big, cinematic display and roomy keyboard. The software bundle is a winner, too, with a full version of Microsoft Office and 12 months of Norton Internet Security. (Make sure you get the discs at purchase; on our test system, only the trials of Office and Norton were preinstalled and no CDs were in the box. We've heard various customers report similar occurrences.)Sadly, Sony equips the Vaio NW125 with a standard six-cell battery, which delivers less than 3 hours running time on a single charge. Given the size of the laptop, there would appear to be room for an extended-cell battery. Two 14-inch laptops, the Dell Studio S1440-022B and the Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602, each manage to squeeze in a longer-running eight-cell battery that still sits flush with the system.

We greatly prefer the Vaio NW125 to the similarly sized but single-core that's also on store shelves this summer. Not only does the Sony offer superior performance, thanks to its Intel Core 2 Duo processor, but we like its overall design better. In the end, a laptop with an extra-wide 15.5-inch display isn't the best choice for everyone, but the Vaio VGN-NW125J/T brings enough to the table to justify the added heft for many mainstream laptop users.Sony is arguably second only to Apple in terms of the emphasis it places on laptop design, so the Vaio NW125's unique look shouldn't come as a surprise. The plastic chassis is, according to Sony, a "walnut brown" and is textured. The grooved pattern looks like a fine wood grain, almost bamboo-like in appearance. The textured plastic covers the lid as well as the keyboard deck.

The touch pad, too, is textured, but in its case, it's a grid of raised dots. The feel is an acquired taste. For the first hour we had the NW125, the touch pad felt too rough, as if we were moving the cursor by dragging a finger over a piece of sandpaper. After a short time, we began to like the feel it provides--the polar opposite of the overly glossy touch pads found on HP Pavilions--and found it to be very responsive. The touch pad also features wide vertical and horizontal scroll regions along its right and bottom edges, respectively. The mouse buttons border on being clacky, but they're far from egregious offenders in this regard. The keyboard is stellar. Where Asus crams in a separate number pad on its 15.6-inch UX50V laptop, Sony wisely leaves it off on the Vaio NW125. As a result, the keyboard is centered beneath the display and feels very roomy. The Chiclet-style keys don't offer the supple feel of the Dell Studio S1440, but they offer good travel with nary a key shortened. Despite its obvious entertainment appeal, the Vaio NW125 doesn't feature a strip of media control keys; you'll need to use the F keys to pause, fast forward, rewind, and control the volume. In addition to the power button, only three other buttons reside above the keyboard: a mute button, a handy Web button opens your default browser, and a third that turns the display off and on.

The 15.5-inch screen features a cinematic 16:9 aspect ratio and a 1,366x768-pixel native resolution, making it a perfect fit for HD video (although it's not a full 1080p display). The screen has a glossy coating to spiff up the appearance of movies and photos, and while it does help make colors pop and movement look smoother, it might be the least-glossy glossy screen we've seen, so glare and reflections are not a problem. Also not a problem: the integrated speakers, which reach a respectable level and max volume.
You'll find a useful assortment of ports and connections on the NW125. HDMI is featured, for outputting video to an HDTV, as is VGA for connecting to older computer monitors. FireWire (i.Link in Sony's parlance) makes the cut, joining a trio of USB 2.0 ports and an eSATA port.As a member of Best Buy's Next Class program, the Sony Vaio VGN-NW125J/T (a configuration exclusive to the retail store) goes beyond just software trials and actually offers a useful software bundle. Or so claims Best Buy on its Web site. Next Class systems we recently reviewed--the Dell Studio S1440-022B and the HP Pavilion dv4-1465dx--included CDs (with activation codes) of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 and Norton Internet Security 2009. Our Vaio NS125 test system included neither. We would have chalked this up to us receiving an early production system, but multiple customer comments on Best Buy's Web site report missing CDs. Be sure to look in the box for both Office and Norton CDs should you decide to purchase the Vaio NW125J/T.

On CNET Labs application benchmarks, the NW125 kept pace with other systems that feature the same configuration: Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, 4GB of memory, a 5,400rpm hard drive, and integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics. It provides more than enough muscle for general mainstream use, including heavy multitasking, and should be able to handle any nongaming task you throw at it.The Vaio NW125 uses a standard six-cell battery and lasted 2 hours, 49 minutes on CNET Labs' demanding battery drain test. In anecdotal testing, with the laptop running under typical usage scenario, we didn't surpass the 3-hour mark. That's fairly disappointing, when you consider smaller laptops at or near the NW125's price use extended-cell batteries, which greatly lengthen the time you can spend away from a wall outlet. The HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx packs a small 13.3-inch screen with a movie- and HD-friendly 16:9 aspect ratio and a big, nine-cell battery. Weighing an even 5 pounds, it's a highly portable laptop, but thanks to its extended-cell battery, it's not much lighter (and in one case, heavier) than larger 14-inch models. The long-running battery will get you through a double feature, and watching movies ought to be a priority if you're thinking about pulling the trigger on the Pavilion dv3-2155mx.

The dragon-and-floral imprint finish will also need to appeal to you; the Pavilion dv3-2155mx is a fixed configuration retail model with one and only one chassis option. There aren't any deal-breakers to be found on this $729 thin-and-light laptop--depending on your opinions of dragons--but the $749 Dell Studio S1440-022B offers a larger display and a lighter weight (but no DVD burner), while the $799 Toshiba Satellite E105-S1602 is only a hair heavier and features a 14-inch display, backlit keys, and a two-year warranty.HP Pavilion laptops stand out from the mainstream pack by offering a bit of flair with their imprint finishes. The Pavilion dv3-2155mx is no different, with a dragon-and-floral print running vertically through its indigo-blue chassis. The dragons can be found on the lid and also run across the wrist rest and touch pad. There isn't much contrast between the bluish-silver dragon print and background color, so if you're scared off by the thought of dragons populating your laptop, check it out in person before drawing a conclusion. Still, the overall effect is more "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" than Dungeons & Dragons.

Like the 14-inch Pavilion dv4-1465dx, the Pavilion dv3-2155mx features an extended-cell battery that protrudes from the bottom of the system. The dv3-2155mx has a trimmer battery, a nine-cell unit as opposed to the huge 12-cell battery that weighs down the dv4-1465dx. The nine-cell battery juts out of the bottom of the laptop by 0.75 inch, and its rounded shape makes a convenient handle when carrying about the laptop with the lid closed. However, the battery doesn't run the whole length (only about three-quarters) of the laptop, so when the laptop is resting on your thighs, it lists to the right. The battery also creates a ridge that's uncomfortable when on your lap; the weight-bearing ridge begins to dig into your thigh after a time. When seated at a desk or table, though, the battery provides a comfortable angle for typing.

HP HSTNN-F02C Battery

One thing is clear: higher-resolution displays do, indeed, work on small Netbooks, and once you get used to having a little more screen real estate, it's hard to go back.
A standard collection of ports and connections offered no surprises, and as this system is available only as a fixed-configuration retail laptop, there are no options to speak of. If you need high-end features such as 802.11n Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, look elsewhere. The most interesting thing about the LT31 is its choice of processors. Instead of the Intel Atom, it uses an AMD Athlon 64 L110. With a clock speed of only 1.2GHz, you'd expect this to be a non-starter, but in fact, we found the Gateway ran smoother and quicker than nearly any Atom-powered Netbook we've tried. The comparison is especially interesting because the other 11-inch Netbooks we've seen have all used the Z520 version of the Intel Atom (rather than the more common N270), which led to annoyingly slow overall performance.

The single-core L110 CPU did better than most Netbooks in single-app tests, such as iTunes, but considerably worse in our multitasking test. It's worth noting that our multitasking test is not always an accurate measure of single-core CPUs, and in anecdotal use, we found this to be among the zippiest-feeling Netbooks we've ever used.AMD's other Atom-like CPU, the Neo, has been seen in only a handful of more expensive step-up systems, such as HP's dv2, so it's a pleasant surprise to get better-than-average performance in the same sub-$400 ballpark as typical Netbooks. Having twice the RAM of most Netbooks, at 2GB, also helps, and explains why the LT31 uses Windows Vista Basic as its operating system. (Although as this product, like most Netbooks, doesn't qualify for a free Windows 7 upgrade, it might make sense to hold off on a purchase until October.)

Jumping away from the typical Atom platform also allows Gateway to include ATI Radeon X1270 graphics, which will help with some very basic casual gaming and video viewing, making it easier to take advantage of the high-res screen for HD video (but we still found full-screen HD video streaming to be occasionally stuttery).Looks like it's laptop day over at Samsung, with the N series of netbooks getting two additions, joined by two high-definition models: the Q320 and R552.The Q320, pictured above, sports an edge-to-edge 13.4-inch LED screen, with 16:9 aspect ratio. Samsung claims the screen is hi-def, which isn't much of a boast on a laptop, but hasn't yet revealed its resolution. Having said that, the Q320 packs a fair bit of movie-watching and gaming grunt with an Nvidia GeForce G105M graphics card and dedicated 256MB of GDDR3 memory.

The whole shebang is run by an Intel Centrino 2 Processor. You get a slot-loading optical disk drive -- referred to by Samsung as an ODD, which must be some kind of joke -- and one USB port. There's also a combination USB and eSATA port. The Q320 weighs 2.2kg with a six-cell battery, which is claimed to last up to 4.6 hours. A 12-cell option is also available. The R552, pictured below, packs a 15.6-inch screen, also in 16:9 HD. Samsung is trumpeting 5 hours battery life, so you could watch two films or get in an eyeball-straining gaming session. Design-wise, there's a light-up touchpad and an 'aluminium-style' palmrest, whatever that is. Something's either aluminium or it's not, you'd think. You also get a whopping four USB ports, including one that's powered to charge devices even when the computer is turned off. A separate combo port also supports both USB and eSATA connections.

Like the N310 netbook launched yesterday, both the Q320 and R552's keyboards are coated with anti-bacterial science-y stuff. They'll show up in April. We'll keep you posted on pricing when we know more. After 19 months of consulting--in Silicon Valley, we prefer that term to "unemployment"--I've accepted a job.Once I start, I'll have to stop blogging. But while I'm still independent, I'd like to wrap up here by offering a short series of articles addressing several key topics in the area of personal computing.Energy efficiency has become a major selling point of today's personal computers, especially laptops, because power consumption determines battery life.Unfortunately, laptops are being optimized for energy efficiency in a way that isn't fully consistent with the needs of laptop users.Advances in process technology and CPU design have greatly improved the power efficiency of modern microprocessors when they're running. This improvement is most visible at the highest performance levels.Over the last few years, dual-core laptop processors have gone from maximum speeds of roughly 2.4GHz to 3.0GHz without consuming any more power. The newest quad-core chips provide much more aggregate performance in a similar power envelope.

This improvement in operating efficiency is great for gaming, mobile video editing, and a few other applications. But it's not very meaningful for most consumers. What the rest of us need is non-operating efficiency, the ability of the laptop to consume very little power when it isn't doing much because that's what our laptops are usually doing. We need laptops that can do nothing--more efficiently.I've been looking at the newest crop of ultra low-power laptops. Based on published benchmark data, they consume an average of 8W to 10W of power when doing essentially nothing (what we call "idle power"). Even the best of them consumes about 6W of power at all times, getting 10 hours of battery life from a 60WH battery. Maybe 2W of that is spent keeping the display on. The other 4W to 8W is just wasted by the CPU and other motherboard circuitry. When your laptop isn't doing much--for example, when you're typing in your word processor--it's using only slightly more CPU performance than your cell phone is when you're texting. Your cell phone consumes very little power to do this meager amount of work, usually no more than 0.25W or so for the CPU and its support chips. The corresponding elements of your laptop, however, may consume 50 times as much power under similar conditions.

Some of this difference is inevitable; your laptop has wider data buses, more and faster RAM, and so on. Nevertheless, your laptop motherboard could be designed to idle along on 1W or so.That would give you a total system-level power consumption of around 3W--half the power of today's most energy-efficient laptops and about one-quarter the power of an average machine. Because there's a relationship between peak CPU speed and idle power, today's fastest laptops consume 20W or more at idle. With more energy-aware designs, these systems could see even greater proportional reductions. In other words, adopting more aggressive methods for reducing idle power could easily double battery life across the board, and some systems would see much bigger improvements. This is not merely a quantitative improvement. Consider what happens when your laptop can comfortably operate for 20 hours with the display on, or 60 hours with the display off.For one thing, it never has to go to sleep. Your cell phone never really goes to sleep, and that's a great part of its value. Your laptop can have this same cell phone operating model.

Closing the lid should turn off the display, but the machine should keep running. It can stay connected to the Internet over Wi-Fi or 3G, periodically download your new e-mail messages, watch that eBay auction, and do whatever else you need it to do...all the time. Just plug it in to recharge while you're asleep. (If the laptop is in your briefcase, it'll have to slow down a lot to keep from consuming too much power, but that's easily managed.)When you're ready to start using the machine actively again, it shouldn't take any longer to turn the display on again than it does to physically open the lid. Think "always on," not "instant on."All of this is possible with today's technology, but nobody's doing it. I think one of the reasons we don't see this usage model is that laptop buyers don't know to ask for it. Incremental improvements produce adequate sales figures with each new laptop generation, and everyone figures that's good enough. But mark my words: the first full-function laptop that works like a cell phone--always running, always connected, always ready--is going to hit the market like a sledgehammer. Everything else is going to seem obsolete overnight.

Asus is perhaps best known for virtually creating the Netbook phenomenon with its line of inexpensive Eee PCs. The company has subsequently done a good job of refining and expanding on the Netbook experience, with systems such as the slim Eee PC 1005HA and the touch-screen Eee PC T91.The latest move is to add an 11.6-inch display, which, while not currently a threat to popular 10-inch models, still shows a lot of promise for Netbooks becoming ever more useful to mainstream laptop users.Asus' take on an 11.6-inch Netbook retains the slim, attractive styling of the 10-inch 1005HA, and wisely upgrades the screen to a higher-resolution 1,366x768 model. Like the first 11-inch Netbook we checked out, the Acer Aspire One 751h, it uses the Z520 version of Intel's Atom processor, instead of the more common (and faster) N270 and N280 CPUs.In the Acer version, that made the system feel just sluggish enough that we were occasionally tempted to throw it out of a window. In a concession to reality, Asus allows for some overclocking of the CPU (up to 30 percent via the system's BIOS), which brings the performance up to standard Netbook levels. Still, it's an inelegant workaround, and makes us eager to check out 11-inch systems due later this year with more powerful CPUs from Intel and AMD.

Asus a8jc Battery

commonly found in significantly larger CULV laptops - but it's just as well conisdering that the Libretto is running Windows 7 Home Premium.Physical connections are unsurprisingly frugal - Toshiba's furnished the Libretto with nothing more than a USB port, a 3.5mm audio output and a MicroSD card reader - but wireless connectivity covers every base with 802.11n, Bluetooth and an optional integrated 3G adapter.Fire up the Libretto and it's immediately impressive: the twin touchscreens - yes, they're multi-touch capable - are bright and clear with not a hint of grain, and each of the 7in panels has a modest resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels.
Initially, the Windows desktop stretches across both screens just like any multi-monitor setup. It's undeniably novel: whether you want to run different applications side by side or stretch webpages or Word documents across both displays, you can. Flip the Libretto round to hold it like a book, and the accelerometer shifts the Windows desktop around to match.

There is, of course, one crucial laptop ingredient missing from the Libretto: a keyboard. Instead, dabbing the keyboard button toggles Toshiba's software keyboard on and off. Use the Libretto in the usual laptop orientation, and, initially at least, it's a fairly unsettling experience: haptic feedback gives a clear indication as to whether you've successfully hit a key or not, but, conversely, the limited width of the display means that touch-typing is all but out of the question.
It's far from unusable, though. Mistakes are inevitable, but entering text into dialog boxes, emails or documents is made easier thanks to the T9 dictionary which throws up suggestions and corrections. Meanwhile, dabbing the on-screen keyboard icon swaps between various different keyboard layouts, such as the split keyboard which makes it possible to hold the Libretto and type with your thumbs. And should you ever need one, there's also an on-screen touchpad.
Getting the most out of such an unusual device is clearly beyond the abilities of Windows 7 Home Premium, however, and Toshiba has tried to plug the gap with its LifeSpace suite of software.

ReelTime uses a touch-friendly interface to list recently accessed documents, previewing their contents on the adjacent display, and the Bulletin Board area allows users to pin notes, documents and links to a virtual pin-board. But by far our favourite part of Toshiba's LifeSpace? There's a virtual piano.
The hardware was most definitely pre-production, suffering from sluggish fits of pique, and regularly unresponsive touchscreens, but, warts and all, it's difficult not to come away a little bit impressed.Indeed, you've got to admire the sheer chutzpah of Toshiba in releasing such a bold product. Is it practical? From our brief outing with it, we'd have to say not. Will it be affordable? Well, if by affordable you mean cheaper than, say, the iPad, then probably not.Look at it as a technological showpiece which physically embodies Toshiba's mantra of Leading Innovation, though, and it almost begins to make sense. It's innovative, thoughtfully designed and, to its credit, more than a little bit bonkers. We can't wait to get one in for a full PC Pro review.

Lenovo isn't going to hang around for the return of the Start button in the Windows 8.1 update, and has partnered with a startup to restore the much-missed Start menu. The Windows 8.1 update is due from Microsoft on 17 October - and has apparently already started rolling out to manufacturers - which will see the return of the Start button, though not the full cascading menu.Perhaps in light of that compromise, Lenovo has teamed up with software company SweetLabs to pre-install its Pokki software on PCs.The Pokki package includes an app store separate from the Windows Store, a gaming arcade and a "modern Start menu".According to Bloomberg, Pokki has been downloaded onto more than three million Windows 8 machines, with the average user opening the software more than 10 times a day.According to Lenovo, Pokki will arrive on some IdeaPad, ThinkPad and IdeaCentre models, though it didn't specify which, in the coming weeks. Bloomberg reports that Pokki will eventually come pre-loaded on all Lenovo PCs. Lenovo also stated the devices would be available in "multiple regions" globally.

SweetLabs' co-founder and chief marketing officer, Chester Ng, has said that similar partnerships are in the works, reports Bloomberg.Next to the latest crop of high-power laptops, the Acer Aspire V3 (part code: NX.M9VEK.001) looks dated. It's a beefy laptop, with a huge 17.3in display and a cheap-feeling champagne-and-black plastic chassis ¨C it isn't a patch on the svelte Apple MacBook Pro or the excellent Samsung Series 7 Chronos. However, there's no doubt this 17.3in desktop replacement is a machine from 2013: it includes one of Intel's factory-fresh Haswell processors. In fact, it's the first big laptop we've seen with a Haswell chip, and the Core i7-4702QM packs a punch. It's a quad-core chip with Hyper-Threading, so it appears to the operating system as eight virtual cores, and its 2.2GHz stock speed rises dynamically to 3.2GHz with Turbo Boost. This particular Core i7 CPU is one of Intel's weakest quad-core Haswell parts, but that wasn't obvious in our performance tests. The Acer's application benchmark score of 0.94 is exemplary: it's slightly quicker than the Samsung Series 7 Chronos, which scored 0.9 in the same tests.

The Haswell processor is partnered by a discrete graphics core ¨C an Nvidia GeForce GT 750M. This returned an excellent score of 63fps in our 1,600 x 900 Medium quality Crysis test, and at the Acer's native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 it returned a just-about-playable 28fps ¨C enough gaming power for anyone. The rest of the specification is suitably high-end. Twelve gigabytes of RAM is more than we see in most desktops, let alone laptops, and there's a Blu-ray drive ¨C an increasingly rare commodity in laptops. Connectivity is handled by dual-band 802.11n wireless, Bluetooth 4 and Gigabit Ethernet, and the 1TB hard disk provides ample storage. There's only one downside ¨C it isn't an SSD. The drive's sequential read and write speeds of 95MB/sec and 93MB/sec are sluggish compared to the MacBook's 256GB SSD.We expect powerful laptops to suffer away from the mains, but Haswell processors are designed for efficiency as well as power, and the Acer put in a surprisingly good showing in our tests. You probably won't want to lug the 3.2kg V3 around much, but when you do, you'll get reasonable battery life. Despite its high-power components, the Acer lasted for 5hrs 54mins in our light-use test.

The 17.3in, 1,920 x 1,080 panel isn't as impressive. There's no touch support, and quality is mixed. It's bright, at 392cd/m2, but despite decent contrast of 712:1, the overall impression isn't great. The biggest problem is poor colour accuracy: the Acer's average Delta E of 7.5 is way off, and makes images look flat and insipid. The Acer's ergonomics are equally mixed. The Scrabble-tile keyboard has a solid base, and there's plenty of consistent travel on each key. The keys are full-sized, too, and there's room for a number pad. The touchpad is average, however, lacking the premium feel of the Samsung's, and Windows 8's edge-swipe gestures worked inconsistently. On the positive side, there's plenty of connectivity, with pairs of USB 2 and headphone connectors on the right-hand side, two USB 3 sockets on the left-hand edge and both D-SUB and HDMI display outputs. The front edge houses an SD card slot, and there's enough upgrade potential to keep tinkerers happy. The battery can be removed and replaced, and removing the large panel on the Aspire's underside reveals two SODIMM memory modules, the Wi-Fi adapter and a 2.5in hard disk. All of these can be replaced, and there's even room to expand, with a second 2.5in hard disk bay and one free mini PCI Express slot.

That's one reason you might consider the Acer Aspire V3 over the Samsung Series 7 Chronos. The other is the price, which at ¡ê799 is reasonable for such a powerful laptop. On every other count, though, it lags behind, with poorer display quality, shorter battery life and a cheaper design.Dell plans to sell its long-awaited 4K monitor for only $699, the company has revealed at CES 2014.Last year the company announced it would be offering the 28in "Ultra HD" P2815Q screen for less than $1,000. Now it's come in some way below that mark, with a final US price of $699, according to a report by Forbes. UK pricing wasn't available at the time of publication. The screen has a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 and will launch globally on 23 January.Other specifications are currently thin on the ground, with Dell merely confirming that the screen will tilt, pivot and swivel, and that it will have multiple connections for "smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs," without confirming exactly what they are.Our team on the ground at CES in Las Vegas should be able to bring you more details later this week.

4K has become a theme at this year's CES: Sony yesterday unveiled an Ultra-Short-Throw Projector that can effectively turn walls into 147in 4K displays.Netflix has also this week announced plans to stream the forthcoming series of its drama House of Cards at 4K resolution, while YouTube announced a less bandwidth-intensive technology for 4K streams. The more seductive the toys they put in front of me, the more devious I get at strategies to avoid their siren call. Flying in and out of Zurich airport, I developed the Red Watch Excuse: I only buy watches with red faces, which are very rare, therefore I can merrily ignore all the very sexy, very expensive watches with non-red faces.I wrote here about upgrading my old (and horribly unreliable, until it was repaired) MacBook Pro laptop with a solid-state drive: this was another Red Watch trick, to stop me looking at other, later, sexier MacBooks. Now, I'm carrying an HP nc4400, because it's small enough that I can ignore pretty piano-black netbooks, and it runs Vista, which hasn't done anything nasty to me yet and helps me to avoid buying one copy of Windows 7 per laptop... You begin to see the pattern here.

So when the iPad seemed imminent, I went back to my basic principles. I had already rescued my oldest laptop with a Compact Flash disk upgrade, after being obliged to fall back on it because it has a genuine, no-messing 9-pin serial port. Lots of switches and routers use a serial connection as part of the "I'm a brick, fix me" mode they occasionally enter: so replacing the 13GB rotating iron platter drive (c. 1997) with an 8GB solid state Compact Flash made perfect sense. However, for blog purposes this job is low on good evidence, because Tecra 8000's put their disks inside dent-prone alloy carrier shells, so you can't easily see what I was up to.Which is when I came across intense substitute temptation: a data-wiped Portege 7010CT. These were the executive's delight a decade and a half ago, coming with no CD in the main laptop and a somewhat chunky docking unit, carrying excellent speakers, a DVD drive with hardware decoder, a floppy - all the stuff you didn't really need while actually working.Mindful of the likely super-long-term requirement for the Tecra 8000 in switch-recovery duties, I thought: how cool would it be to have an SSD Portege? As it turns out, I was the only person to think this, because I got the whole machine for ¡ê12. That's a whole laptop, with a wiped drive admittedly, for less than it was going to cost me to buy replacement lid hinges for my wobbly-screened nc4400. I already knew how good the quality of the parts in a Portege are because lots of them are shared with the Tecras, and I definitely wanted something I could write on - which means a good keyboard, a clear screen, longish battery life and ideally, no ability to connect to the internet whatsoever. The Portege looked ideal.

HP 587706-761 Battery

Naturally it needs a hardcore processor to match the other specs, so it¡¯s no surprise to see an ultra-low voltage Haswell Core i7 4500U processor inside. Toshiba claims a battery life of up to nine hours, and bearing in mind this machine weighs 1.35kg and measures 19.8mm thick with the lid closed, it¡¯s a dream come true for professionals on the move.It adds up to one beautiful laptop and, judging from our first look, a hit for Toshiba. It¡¯s coming to the UK in mid-to-late February at a price of ¡ê1,299 inc VAT. That¡¯s undeniably steep, so we look forward to seeing if it can justify the process once we¡¯ve put the Kira through our full assault of tests.Toshiba today announced three new mobile computer designs to coincide with the 25th anniversary of its first laptop. The Libretto W100 features dual 7in touchscreens, the Port¨¦g¨¦ R700 is Europe¡¯s slimmest and lightest ¡°full-function¡± laptop, while the AC100 is a mobile internet device powered by a Nvidia Tegra processor and Google Android.

Due for sale in July, the Libretto W100 runs Windows 7 but abandons the traditional keyboard for a second 7in screen. You can still use the Libretto as a traditional laptop, with an on-screen keyboard complete with haptic feedback filling the bottom screen, or you can view a completely different application on the second screen. The Libretto is designed to work in both horizontal and vertical positions, switching automatically thanks to a built-in sensor. Reminiscent of Microsoft¡¯s now-binned Courier concept device, this could allow you to make notes in the right-hand screen while viewing a document in the other. See our first impressions of the Toshiba Libretto W100: first-look review, and more photos of the device, on the PC Pro blog. While the Libretto will likely gain the most headlines, Toshiba¡¯s Android-powered device ¨C the AC100 ¨C could have the most long-term impact. Its key advantages over smartphones are a 10.1in screen and full Qwerty keyboard.

The AC100 remains light, at 870g, and Toshiba has worked with partners such as YouTube to take advantage of the larger screen. It will include an 8GB solid state disk, 512MB of RAM, a 1GHz Nvidia processor, 802.11n wireless and, on some models, built-in mobile broadband.¡°There¡¯s a huge battery life of up to eight hours,¡± said Tony Alderson, product manager of Toshiba¡¯s consumer laptops, ¡°and that¡¯s not downhill with the wind behind it type figure, that¡¯s full usage browsing the internet, watching videos type figure. Indeed, it will last seven days on standby as well.¡±PC Pro has had the advantage of using the device for a couple of days, and we¡¯ve posted a first-look review of the Toshiba AC100 on our blogs. It's due for release in August.Toshiba¡¯s final announcement, the Port¨¦g¨¦ R700, can¡¯t match the AC100 or Libretto W100 for innovation, but is still a substantial release. Its key inclusion is a Core i3 or Core i5 processor in a 13.3in ultraportable. Previously, ultraportables have used ultra-low-voltage chips.

Toshiba claims this inclusion is possible due to a unique motherboard design, which positions all the heat-generating components in one small area of the chassis. A low-speed fan then continually pushes air over these components to prevent overheating, even when the system is pushed flat out.The end result, according to Toshiba, is battery life up to eight hours on the standard battery, despite the 13.3in screen and high-end processor. The R700¡¯s weight starts at 1.3kg and prices from ¡ê629 exc VAT. It goes on sale immediately (see the blogs for our first impressions of the Port¨¦g¨¦ R700).All three mobile devices were launched to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Toshiba laptops, and the company¡¯s UK marketing director, Matt McDowell, made it clear this was no coincidence. ¡°Hopefully we¡¯ve demonstrated we¡¯re redefining mobile computing again by launching a new era of innovative, smaller form factors.¡±Intel's Ultrabook concept has seen all manner of gorgeous, slim-and-light laptops make their way through the PC Pro office, but one thing they've never been is cheap. Now Asus is attempting to right that wrong with its VivoBook S200E, a compact little laptop which crams in a Core i3 processor alongside Windows 8 and an 11.6in touchscreen.

As the VivoBook S200E measures a relatively chunky 22mm thick, Asus isn't officially allowed to call it an Ultrabook. Regardless, we doubt anyone would describe this laptop as overweight. At 1.41kg, this 11.6in machine is a little heavier than most 13in Ultrabooks, though not by much, and thanks to the tiny, lightweight 148g wall wart power supply, you can pop both in a bag without too much shoulder strain. While it lacks the razor-edge slenderness of pricier peers, this little laptop is still good-looking and solidly built. Sheets of alloy stretch across the lid and around the Scrabble-tile keyboard, making the S200E look like a chubby cousin to Asus's 11.6in Ultrabook, the Zenbook UX21. The metal and plastic construction feels bombproof, and the whole chassis is stiff and flex-free. It's outlandishly refined for a ¡ê450 laptop. The modest hardware within does a good job of keeping Windows 8 feeling fluid and responsive, too. There are two VivoBook S200E models in the range, with the entry-level model featuring a basic Pentium CPU for ¡ê400, while the model we're reviewing here has a dual-core 1.8GHz Core i3. Whichever you choose, there's 4GB of memory and a 500GB hard disk. It isn't a lightning-quick combination by any means, but the result of 0.48 in our Real World Benchmarks compares very favourably to even full-sized budget laptops. The only annoyance is the quiet whir of the cooling fan, although this is audible only in quiet surroundings.

In some ways, however, the VivoBook S200E is quite out of the ordinary. It does everything you'd expect of a standard laptop, but the 11.6in touchscreen and Windows 8 make a fine pairing. We quickly found ourselves instinctively flitting between tapping at the keyboard and touchpad to prodding the screen directly. Here, the extra weight in the VivoBook's base proves a real boon, preventing the laptop from tilting backwards too easily as you tap. It still doesn't take much force to set the Asus rocking back on its hinge, but as the touchscreen responds to even the lightest of touches, it's easy to adapt to it.Games consoles can help get children interested in coding, according to manufacturers - and Microsoft is offering cut-price Xbox 360s to help get them into classrooms.Sony and Microsoft are racing to get their own consoles into the hands of pupils ahead of the new computing curriculum, which will be introduced in September.Speaking to PC Pro at the BETT education technology show, both firms said consoles were a natural segue into computer science."A lot of people use Xbox consoles and PlayStation consoles at home," said Steve Beswick, Microsoft¡¯s senior director of education. "If you can use that as a device to do programming, it can entice the student by coming from an Xbox environment into computer science rather than coming in from a PC or laptop."

Dr. Maria Stukoff, the head of academic development at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, added that game development gave children more than just computing skills."Why do we use PCs when it could be PS?" she said. "Especially when you look at future skills, getting gaming technology skill sets [helps with] coding, story telling, teamwork and problem solving."Microsoft will offer discounted previous-generation Xbox 360 consoles and software development kits to UK schools from today, as part of a wider educational drive. The company has also unveiled a new suite of free software, Switched On Computing, to help primary school teachers who will be teaching the new curriculum later this year. This is the first time Microsoft will specifically target the education market with Xbox 360 bundles, with Beswick saying the demand had come from schools."More people are using Xbox to do programming," said Beswick. "As part of our investment into [the] education market, we¡¯ll [offer] bundles where schools can go up and buy technology that includes our developer programmes as well as Xboxes. In the same way that we sell devices and software in a much-reduced way to schools, we're looking to do the same with Xbox."

Sony, meanwhile, said it had spent the last two years examining how PlayStation consoles could be used in schools and plans to release dedicated lesson plans for teachers before September."We were very keen to provide the PlayStation to young talent to come onto our platform, but more importantly to put the PlayStation in the education debate in the UK," said Stukoff.Laptop and mobile phone batteries could see a tenfold boost in performance if a technology breakthrough from scientists in the US comes to fruition.According to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, replacing conventional battery electrodes with those coated with carbon nanotubes can drastically increase the power to weight ratio compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. The scientists say they produced the powerful new electrodes by alternatively dipping a base material in solutions containing carbon nanotubes with positive and negative charges to make a stable film coating.

The result is an electrode that is more porous and contains more oxygen groups, which can store a larger number of lithium ions.According to the scientists, the energy output for a given weight of this new electrode material was five times greater than for conventional capacitors, and the total power delivery rate was 10 times that of lithium-ion batteries. In addition to their high power output, the researchers claim the carbon nanotube electrodes were highly stable showing no change in performance over 1,000 charge cycles.Although carbon nanotube production is currently limited to niche suppliers, several companies are gearing up for mass production of the material.Microsoft's Courier tablet might be languishing somewhere in a Redmond wheelie-bin, but Toshiba's Libretto W100 has turned the keyboard-free concept into reality. With dual 7in touchscreens, a miniature netbook form factor and no sign of Intel's weakling Atom, the Libretto takes a daring stride into the future.First impressions are excellent, too. It manages the tricky balancing act of appearing light in the hand without feeling desperately insubstantial, and we were impressed to find the early pre-production units feeling so physically well finished. Brushed aluminium constrasts nicely with the gloss black trim, and the whole effect is one of understated class.

What's probably not immediately apparent from the photographs is how small it is. Measuring just 202mm wide and 123mm deep, it's easy to mistake the Libretto for a plump, miniaturised netbook. It is admittedly fairly thick around its waist - a chunky 31mm - but given how much Toshiba has crammed into its lightweight 840g frame, it's still impressively petite. While we would have been entirely unsurprised to find the Libretto sporting a decidedly modest specification, any fears that Toshiba might have crippled the Libretto with a sluggish Atom processor were soon dispelled. Instead, we were relieved to find a 1.2GHz Intel Pentium U5400 processor taking pride of place alongisde 2GB of DDR3 memory and a 62GB SSD.It's a seriously powerful combination for such a dainty device - not least as the U5400 is more

Accu Makita BSS611Z

Asus 90nlf1b2000z Battery

¡°Hopefully we¡¯ve demonstrated we¡¯re redefining mobile computing again by launching a new era of innovative, smaller form factors.¡±I encountered an interesting problem a couple of weeks ago, when a website I¡¯d written years ago became a target for spammers.A simple page on the site enables users to request further information, but recently the site owners had started to receive lots of spam-type requests for this. They got in touch to ask what could be done about it, since they felt they were in danger of missing genuine enquiries among the hundreds of spam requests.

It was obvious that the requests were being generated by bots automatically filling in and submitting the web form, so my first suggestion was to add a Captcha element to the form ¨C the sort of thing that displays a series of wiggly, distorted characters and numbers that you have to recognise and type in.It was obvious that the requests were being generated by bots automatically filling in and submitting the web formIt was obvious that the requests were being generated by bots automatically filling in and submitting the web form The theory is that only humans can make sense of such images, but so much distortion is applied that often human users can¡¯t make sense of them, either. As such ¨C and because of a deep mutual hatred for the things ¨C my client asked if there was an alternative solution.I¡¯d seen sites that display a simple sum and ask for the answer, or show a picture and ask what it is, both of which seem like possible solutions. However, while talking to the clients, I had another idea, and asked if I could try something out and get back to them.It had occurred to me that these bots simply fill in all the form fields and submit the page, so perhaps there would be a simple way to confuse them? If we put an extra field on the form that wasn¡¯t used, and hid this using CSS ¡°visibility: hidden¡±, a human user wouldn¡¯t see it, and so wouldn¡¯t enter anything into it; a bot, however, would be fooled into filling the field.

All we¡¯d then have to do is test to see if this field contained anything; if it did, we could simply dump that form, since it must have come from a bot.I wasn¡¯t sure this would work, since it depended on bots not using the page¡¯s stylesheet to render it. It turns out, however, that I needn¡¯t have worried ¨C it worked like a dream.Five minutes of coding was all it took to stop the spam submissions. It¡¯s a useful technique that you¡¯re free to use on your own sites, although my usual 5% commission applies...Your boss has just won the lottery, sorted the wares of an online computer parts store by descending price, and bought you a 1.6TB solid-state storage system. So, what do you do with it?Obviously, 1.6TB is an enormous amount of space ¨C all four of my laptops put together muster less disk space than that. In fact, it¡¯s more than I have in traditional SSDs spread across all my machines.

What¡¯s more, this particular fantasy object ¨C the LSI Nytro NWD-BLP4-1600 ¨C doesn¡¯t stuff its massive storage behind a standard, slow SATA controller, the likes of which are increasingly impeding good disk I/O these days. No, this is 1.6TB delivered on an innocuous PCI Express card that slides neatly into one of those expansion card connectors that seem to spend the entire life of a server pointlessly empty.Let me set the stage properly before answering the question of quite what you do with it. This LSI device is representative of pretty much all the others on the market, in that it pretends to be a disk controller to the rest of the PC; the term ¡°flash memory¡± might appear in its specification, but that doesn¡¯t mean it¡¯s memory expansion.Obviously, 1.6TB is an enormous amount of space ¨C all four of my laptops put together muster less disk space than thatObviously, 1.6TB is an enormous amount of space ¨C all four of my laptops put together muster less disk space than that

This is all about real disk space, and since the route of attaching disks via expansion cards is well understood, at least by systems designers, it would be a peculiar and unsuitable machine indeed that refused to accept a card such as this as its boot volume. So, that¡¯s the first thing you might try if given such a device: blasting it up as a C drive and basking in fantastic, hundreds-of-times-faster performance. After all, the focus of activity in most PCs is the C drive, right?Well, yes, up to a point ¨C but the truth is a little more subtle than that. Whether you¡¯re talking about user PCs or servers, the reality of modern-day usage patterns and software designs is that the balance of reads and writes to your everyday C drive is split unevenly. There are lots of sizeable files that are only ever read ¨C except perhaps during an OS update ¨C and there are many far smaller files, isolated in only a few folders, that are written to regularly. In some cases, this might mean thousands of times in their lifecycle, while in others it could mean only four or five times before they vanish again. It¡¯s a bit of an indictment of developer imagination that while there are a dozen or so utilities that show you how much space is used on your disk ¨C and what¡¯s using it ¨C there are no simple gadgets that show you how busy a particular folder or file is. (I know there are several command-line tools, but these tend to focus on developers or network shares, which to my mind sidesteps most of the action ¨C and most of the audience ¨C in one fell swoop.)

Why does this even matter, Steve? Why are you bothering us with such nonsense? First of all, the degree to which your machine ¨C in fact, all of your machines, inside the server room or elsewhere, using Windows or otherwise ¨C depends upon the read/write cycle for a small collection of previously unimportant folders is becoming a major performance inhibitor.Much of your software wants to use one of about half a dozen temporary directory locations, and many developers believed Microsoft¡¯s throwaway statements to the effect that NTFS provides such wonderful caching that add-ons or strategies simply aren¡¯t required.Stage two of this head-scratcher is that flash-based SSDs don¡¯t especially like being written to. Reads are fine ¨C they can blast out data without major impediment ¨C but writes are more problematic. The more you pay for a flash drive, the higher its write performance should be, and the longer its lifespan before those writes start to fail or fill up all the available space. Now, people usually start looking for a disk-speed hike because write performance has exposed a bit of sluggishness in their system; it¡¯s the writes they want to boost. So, surely it would be madness to put in a bit of kit that has such well-known write problems? Here¡¯s where it pays to understand not only the price point and feature list of the item you¡¯re looking at to fix your problem, but also what¡¯s happening to the kit above it and below it in price.

Right at the top of the marketplace for flash memory are devices so insanely vast they stagger the imagination. Imagine a standard two- or three-height rack cabinet with, say, six drawers in it, and each drawer stuffed full of flash memory, packed in row on row like the baleen plates of a blue whale.Toshiba Kira is the company's new top-end brand (although the KiraBook has been out in the States for a year) so it's no surprise that the sole version chosen for the UK screams luxury from every silicon pore. The most obvious sign of this is the combo of screen and chassis, with a gorgeous 2,560 x 1,440 display offering incredibly vivid colours. At 13.3in across, that translates to 221 pixels per inch. While specs junkies may appreciate that, what really matters is that text looks sharp and pictures jump from the screen. The magnesium alloy chassis is another classy touch. The base feels rugged with no hint of flex; Toshiba says this is due to a honeycomb structure to counter the thinness of the metal. There is more flex in the screen, though, so we'd want to pop it into a case rather than slip it loose into a rucksack (note that the screen is protected by Corning Concore glass, which should help against direct attack).

The wide touchpad mirrors the widescreen, and its generous amount of space makes it a pleasure to use. While the keyboard isn't particularly special - it feels fine to type on but the keys don't have a huge amount of travel - it is backlit for darkened conditions. The Toshiba Kira is a slim machine, in part due to the incredible slimness of the screen. This, together with all the other nice design touches, mean this is a laptop that will gain just as many admiring looks on the train as it does in business meetings. If anything, it looks too good for everyday business use.Perhaps in deference to the design, Toshiba has limited the ports: there are two USB 3 on the left-hand side along with a full-size HDMI port, with a further USB 3 slot (which can charge even if the Kira is in Sleep mode), one SD slot and one headphone socket on the right-hand side. The obvious omissions are wired Ethernet and D-SUB or DVI.Other than this, though, there¡¯s little Toshiba has omitted from its top-end laptop. You¡¯ve got 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and dual-band 802.11ac wireless. Plus it¡¯s Windows 8.1 Pro rather than Home, and there's a two-year warranty.Naturally it needs a hardcore processor to match the other specs, so it¡¯s no surprise to see an ultra-low voltage Haswell Core i7 4500U processor inside.

Accu Makita JR120D

Bref, revenons ¨¤ cet Helio X30.

Asus f5m Battery

Insert a photo into a Pages document, for example, and you can pinch and zoom to resize and twist your fingers to rotate, and text flows automatically around images. Both apps, along with presentations app Slideshow, come preinstalled on iPhone 5s and 5c handsets.Delivering a presentation as a deck of PowerPoint slides shows a distinct lack of imagination these days. There¡¯s a plethora of apps that are n¡¯t only capable of delivering more compelling, visually striking presentations than PowerPoint, but they¡¯re also often much easier to use.The reception to Apple¡¯s iPhone 5s and 5c models has prompted me to revisit a previous theme of this column: the almost obsessive-compulsive way that looks have come to dominate the world of gadgetry. Most of the Apple faithful were aghast at the horrid, plastic finish of the 5c: totemic phones, just like Gollum¡¯s ¡°precious¡±, need to be shiny and metallic. Let¡¯s forget that high-quality plastic is a far more practical material for phones: it¡¯s less dentable and scratchable, as demonstrated by the fact virtually all iPhone owners immediately cover their precious with a plastic case.

Most of the Apple faithful were aghast at the horrid, plastic finish of the 5cMost of the Apple faithful were aghast at the horrid, plastic finish of the 5cI¡¯m not a phone fan, but I¡¯m a keen, Flickr-bothering photographer, and the same process is at work in the field of cameras. Pocketable compact cameras have improved astonishingly in recent years, with 20x or even 30x zoom lenses and 18-plus-megapixel sensors far from unusual. Unless you¡¯re a professional sports or wildlife photographer, who needs to print out large copies, such cameras can pretty well replace an entry-level DSLR.The problem is, they don¡¯t look good ¨C or rather, they don¡¯t make you look like a professional. The camera manufacturers¡¯ marketing departments soon spotted this vulnerability, and a new breed of retro-styled cameras is flooding the market.Made to resemble 1930s Leicas, some of these cameras feature interchangeable lenses, while others have full-frame sensors and fixed-focal-length (that is, non-zoom) lenses: what they share are price tags that push north of ¡ê1,000, at a time when seriously capable compacts cost less than ¡ê250.

The founding moment of this trend was probably Olympus¡¯ 2009 ad campaign for its retro-styled PEN E-P1 model, under the slogan ¡°Don¡¯t be a tourist¡±. There you have the rationale stated barely: this is no longer about how convenient or capable the device is, but rather how it makes you look; gadgets have become badges of status, symbols that can distinguish you from the rest of the crowd. This is a matter of life and death for the electronics industry. Camera manufacturers were facing a dramatic decline in sales for compact, point-and-shoot cameras, since most young people prefer to use their ever-more-capable mobile phones to take snaps. There¡¯s a flourishing industry in add-on lenses and imaging apps for the iPhone, while Instagram completely displaces Flickr for the iPhone generation. None of this generates revenue for Canon or Nikon. Commanding a premium price for these retro cameras that make people look like professionals could save those firms.Of course, this domination of the aesthetic has been the rule in other consumer sectors for years ¨C or centuries, in the case of the fashion industry. Today¡¯s luxury cars are all capable of broadly similar performance; they¡¯re so fast they can¡¯t possibly be unleashed on our roads, only on Top Gear.

They¡¯re chosen on the basis of how they look, the prestige of their brand name and a reassuringly huge price tag. I won¡¯t even attempt to analyse the women¡¯s handbag sector, where some brands charge even more than the price of a Leica M9 (and they don¡¯t even take pictures).I¡¯ve always been a modernist in the field of design, a believer in architect Louis Sullivan¡¯s dictum that ¡°form ever follows function¡±, a lover of everything spare, elegant and mass-produced. I play a Fender Stratocaster, I ride a Vespa PX 125 and I own a Parker 51 that I pick up every five years or so to discover the ink has dried up.Of course, the electronics industry is the ultimate expression of such modernism: the economics of the silicon foundry depends on huge production runs, while VLSI chip layouts are beautiful examples of spare necessity, with every wire routed rationally. Therefore there¡¯s a sort of irony, but also an inevitability, about the way laptops, tablets, phones, cameras and other devices built using such chips are becoming subject to fashion in much the same way as clothes. The irony exists in the fact it¡¯s computer-aided design and 3D printing that will make it increasingly possible for us to have different cosmetic outer shells, in small production runs, masking the same set of internal silicon ¡°organs¡±.

Love it or loathe it, the iPhone 5c ¨C with its handbag-matching colours ¨C is a step in that direction. But were I working for Microsoft, Dell or Sony, my every waking thought would be devoted to discovering how to make laptops and Ultrabooks look less like coloured sweeties and more like things a professional might take into the jungle. And no ¨C just painting the case khaki won¡¯t do it...Dell recently announced a newly formed pair of Latitude 7000 Series Ultrabooks, and the Latitude E7240 is the first to land in the PC Pro Labs. Following in the business-friendly footsteps of its predecessors, Dell has packed the Latitude E7240¡¯s sturdy, 12.5in chassis with the latest Haswell technology and a range of office-friendly features.Where other Ultrabooks tout eye-catching designs, the Latitude E7240 is tastefully reserved. The stiff-feeling lid is clad in brushed metal, while the keyboard and screen bezels are comprised of smooth, tough black plastics. There is a little flex in the base, but nothing worrying, and the metal skeleton running around the keyboard¡¯s circumference gives some reassuring protection against accidental knocks or drops. It¡¯s no lightweight as a result, though ¨C the whole package weighs 1.44kg.

On the inside, the Latitude E7240 pairs Intel¡¯s Haswell CPUs with solid-state storage. The basic ¡ê799 exc VAT model has a Core i5-4200U CPU, 4GB of DDR3L RAM and a 128GB SSD. However, our review model is the range-topping ¡ê1,259 exc VAT model, which has a top-flight Core i7-4600U CPU with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.Not surprisingly, performance soars as a result, and the Dell achieved a lightning-quick 0.73 in our Real World Benchmarks. The Lite-On SSD definitely plays its part here: its sequential read and write speeds reached 476MB/sec and 323MB/sec respectively; scores we¡¯ve only seen bettered by the PCI Express SSD in Apple's MacBook Air 13in.Our review unit came with the larger of the two removable battery options, and the Dell¡¯s 42Wh battery lasted an excellent 10hrs 28mins in our light-use battery test. If cost or weight savings are more crucial than stamina, however, Dell also makes a lighter, 31Wh battery. Bought separately, the 31Wh retails at ¡ê75 exc VAT, and the 45Wh retails at ¡ê95 exc VAT.

Most Ultrabooks provide scant connectivity, but not the Latitude E7240; it¡¯s stuffed with an abundance of ports and features. There are three USB 3 ports, mini-DisplayPort, HDMI and a Gigabit Ethernet socket dotted around its edges, and Dell has also added a fingerprint and smart card reader. You can cut costs by specifying Dell-branded single-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, but our range-topping review unit came equipped with an Intel dual-band 802.11ac chipset, Bluetooth 4, NFC and 3G.We¡¯re used to Samsung churning out premium-priced Ultrabooks and high-end smartphones, but the ATIV Book 9 Lite bucks the trend. This is a slim, svelte laptop that promises an Ultrabook-like experience on the cheap. If you can¡¯t shake the feeling that you¡¯ve seen the ATIV Book 9 Lite before, there¡¯s a good reason for that: the DNA of Samsung¡¯s legendary Series 9 range of Ultrabooks is evident in every curve and chamfer of this cut-price laptop. Squint slightly and it¡¯s easy to mistake it for its far pricier predecessor. The Lite is finished in the same dark blue ¨C although there is a more eye-catching white model, if that takes your fancy ¨C and everything from the teardrop hinge design to the scrabble-tile keyboard echoes Samsung¡¯s top-end model.

Inevitably, Samsung has had to make some major compromises to get the price so low. The first casualty is materials. Where the Series 9 was hewn from solid-feeling metal, the ATIV Book 9 Lite has to make do with plastic. It¡¯s good, sturdy-feeling plastic, though, and while there¡¯s a little flex to be found if you force the lid and base, this is a seriously solid-feeling laptop for the money. It¡¯s attractive by budget standards, too. While the lid has a fake brushed metal effect with a glossy finish, the interior and underside are all finished in an attractive matte blue. The ATIV Book 9 Lite also isn¡¯t as thin or light as many of the Ultrabooks we¡¯ve seen. It¡¯s 6mm thicker than Samsung¡¯s Series 9 ¨C including the rubber feet on the base, the Lite measures 19mm thick ¨C and, rather ironically given its name, it weighs a fairly hefty 1.55kg. Thankfully, the fairly compact mains charger doesn¡¯t add too much to the weight: throw both in a bag and the pair come to a very reasonable 1.88kg.

At the heart of the ATIV Book 9 Lite, an AMD processor takes pride of place ¨C though curiously you¡¯d be unable to tell it from the specification on the box, or from delving through Windows 8¡¯s Device Manager. The CPU is described mysteriously simply as a ¡°Quad-Core Processor (up to 1.4GHz)¡±, with no manufacturer or model name to be found. The presence of an AMD Radeon HD 8250 GPU gives the game away, however, as it¡¯s an integral part of AMD¡¯s A6-1450 APU, which is partnered here with a 128GB Samsung PM841 SSD and 4GB of DDR3 RAM.It¡¯s a combination that feels perfectly spritely in casual use, with applications loading and opening quickly. When we recorded the time taken to restart the system, the Lite arrived back at the Start screen in 25 seconds. That¡¯s a testament to the PM841: while it doesn¡¯t rival top-flight SSDs for all-out speed, it generated some impressive figures in the AS SSD benchmark, reading large files at an average of 481MB/s and writing them back at a less notable 108MB/s.

Accu MAKITA TD131DRFXW
